>Father of Fire hear my prayer
>In our desperate hour of despair
>Heat & light rise through the air
>In the Night our strength will flare

The Brotherhood of the Lamplighters
The Lamplighters were created possibly at the beginning of the Age of the Sun when the Man who would become a God created fire for the first time. The Father of Fire created the Sun & for the first time the Darkness was cast back. His apprentices carried on his legacy after he ascended. They brought flame to light the darkness when the night came. With their knowledge & protection humankind has thrived. The Lamplighters guard their secrets well. Induction is full of ceremony & an apprentice will study long on how to tend a flame & control a flame before learning the secret to its creation. Most Lamplighters are beacons of their communities, advisers & teachers, some even take up arms to kill the nightbeasts.

Each Master Lamplighter wields a Cinderstaff. A long stave of Mountain ash with a metal brazier on top. Apprentices usually carry a large bundle of kindling & a long wooden wick for lighting the nightfires. Many also carry earthen lamps or torches as they go about their duties. Many lamplighters carry various powders, oils, incenses, & woods for fire starting & to do things like change/control its brightness, color, hue, size etc. They also know how to make smokes & ashes for various purposes. Like a large cloud of black soot & smoke to obscure line of site or irritating smells to discourage predators with sensitive noses. The more proactive lamplighters who think to guard against the Dark with weapons usually use torch-topped spears, or blades with broad fullers to pour oils upon & set alight quickly. They will use flasks of grease, oils, & pitch to set alight
>>

>Moth Mother drawn to Flame
>Shelter us 'neath your starry wing
>Moth Mother in the night we exclaim
>Seeking mercy from high sing

The Priestesses of the Moth Mother Faith seek to draw on Moth Mothers protection & mercy. The Moth Mother is cosmic & unknowable their religion is not one of understanding but of duty, the Priestesses tend to the humans hurt by the Darkness & weaving protections & wards against the nightbeasts. They try to teach community, wisdom, & charity. The priestesses dress in silken robes spun from the silkworms they raise in their temple grounds. The same silk is used as a medium of enchantment for their spells. They work closely with the Lamplighters. When a Moth Priestess dies she is wrapped in silk & intombed in catacombs. Sometimes their deathshoud will become a cocoon of metamorphosis & they will emerge as a mothwinged beatific being with antenae & pale skin. They fly off to serve the will of the Moth Mother.

>Children beware of Godmother Webb
>Who hides in the forest dark
>Children beware Godmother Webb
>And all the Witches that bear her Mark!

Godmother Webb is the opposite of Moth Mother. While Moth Mother is capricious, unknowable yet benevolent, Godmother Webb is alien, strange & sometimes cruel. Both of these mythic creatures/aspects are hard to understand, much like fae creatures one is "good" one is "bad" but people who serve them or were granted boons have some leeway. Spider Witches are Godmother Webb's agents. They use spider silk to weave hexes, ensnare men, & puppet their victims. Spider Witches dress in black silk robes & usually don broad brimmed hats. Favored Witches will be bundled up by Godmother Webb's spider handmaidens into a cocoon to turn them into monstrous yet alluring forms with eight eyes & spindly limbs.

The Forest is labyrinthine & vast. This is where the Spider Witches hold sway. Dark & gloomy even during the day which makes it a dangerous place. As well as not having much in the way of agriculture. While people have tried to settle here, it has been difficult, most deciding to settle on the fringes & keep their fires high.

The Spider Witches do not fear
much the fearsome nightbeasts of the Forest as their spidersilk enchantments focus on illusions & misdirection. Some outlaws have hewn out large bandit fortresses with think wooden walls to give them what protection they can & carve the Mark of Godmother Webb on the trees in hopes of earning her favor. These bandits routinely raid the more peaceable people on the edge of the Forest for food, supplies, & such. Some bandit groups are led by Spider Witches

>Listen closely child & take heed
>The Devil dances in the Deep
>The Mountain gives but watch thy Greed
>The Devils breath brings death's sleep!

The secrets of metallurgy were learned when the child Harlo played a game of riddles with the Demon in the Mountain.
The child brought back tools of iron, stronger than bronze, & in time learned to even forge silk into a blade.
The Demon in Mountain, ever spiteful breathes his poison breath in the Low Caverns so that the brave men who mine them might die choking on its bad air
The Demon in the Mountain can steal the voice of the dead & call out in stolen voice to lead others to calamity. Sometimes he takes the form of a goat climbing the mountain
The Mountain is sacred to all Mankind, humanities first womb. In the days before the Sun humans hid in its many caves. Only now with the knowledge of fire do they venture out to seek their destiny.

Men of the Caves
They hole up in the Mountain, trusting the rock & iron to protect them, venturing out only when the sun rises. The Devil in the Mountain may hate them & try to harm them but they trust the Devil they know & do not like these men with Fire. Fire steals their breath deep in the Mountain as surely as the Devil's & fire will run wild killing, who can say how these Lamplighters keep it on a leash? That being said they still DO use fire for minimal light & for forging, but they are reluctant to rely too much on the Lamplighters
>>
>>75838226
the Mountain is basically humanity's birthplace. Its caves being one of the only safeguards of the preSun world. After the First Lamplighter created the Sun humanity began to venture out. They had a day of relative protection & fires to ward off foes at Night. When all of this new stuff started happening & discoveries being made people wanted to settle the land outside of the Mountain, but not everyone wanted to. This lead to a schism which perpetuated the rift between the Men of the Caves & Lamplighter Cult. The Men of the Caves are relative isolationists. Those that ventured forth from the Mountain were organized into the 15 Torchbearer Clans. In a huge exodus they settled in low hills & valleys & became the People of the Vale. The Vale region is large & well populated by many villages & small kingdoms. Of the original Torchbearer Clans a few of them intermingled & some died out, others split into smaller groups following a schism.

The Lakemen

The Lake is settled by those named simply enough the Lakemen. They are seen as having odd & strange ways. They live on the shores of a very large lake. They have lantern boats & their "big" cities usually have Lighthouses to guide ships & protect the city from Darkness. They also use lamps on the prows of their ships
Also, spooky foggy lake shit

I love the idea.
How are the plans for the future? Is this a "/tg/ gets shit done"-project?
>>
>>75841519
By what metric would it be "done"? Like how far does it need to go?
>>
>>75841922
Good question. I think that "done" would mean to me, that we got a nice setting and a system for playing in it. Most likely a DnD-System, but I would prefere it to be a SotDL-system to be honest.
>>
>>75842048
Fuck SotDL. There is nothing in that fetish filled edgydark system that would translate well.

The One Ring could maybe do it, or some of the generic ones like genesys. Id prefer to have no system & just worldbuild though.

Someone redpill me on what's going on here.
>>
>>75842984
Ages ago someone made a kaiju thread about a moth (Mothra) being a protector of earth. I was inspired & started making a setting about humanity, firelight, & moths with the good help of some amazing anons. If you have questions id love to answer them. Heres a elevator pitch text

>In the Darkness Man made Fire
>With this Beacon the Moth Mother came
>Drawn to the Flame she shelters us
>This is why we leave fires lit on dark nights

It is said that the First Lamplighter who kindled Fire courted her & took her as wife. His gift was the Sun & even at night he lights the Stars so that they may dance together through the Darkness.
>>
>>75843316
Is it... lewd?

Drawanon here. Yep, still here.
Been busy with some other projects, but I have been thinking about things that could help this one out. Funnily enough I was actually thinking about starting a new lamplighter thread just yesterday, because I think I've got something that might get the ball rolling as far as worldbuilding is concerned.

Besides the drawthreads and various homebrew threads, I also frequent the CYOA general my favourites being the "real builder" types. So I've been thinking, wouldn't making (or at least imagining a realm builder CYOA be great for worldbulding in general? I mean, these CYOAs literally invite you to imagine yourself in said worlds and provide you with key insights and fundamental information to help you make your way in it. So my idea is, if we can come up with same the relevant questions/answers to our setting, enough to make a decent CYOA out of, we'd have a very solid foundation.

What kind of life choices can we make? what tools and weapons are available? As well as their relevance/context within the setting, from the mundane to exotic. What kind of natural phenomena and creatures we can encounter and what are their risks and benefits? What kind of people will we meet? From small parties to large factions, down to individuals, what are their stories and motives? What would our own goals be in this world?

What do you all think?

Said CYOA that inspired this.

It can be. Its not explicitly lewd though. The Spider Witches & the Moth Priestesses both wear silk which is pretty sheer. Its barely an iron age setting so nudity isnt a big deal. No rape, or implied rape though, fuck that shit. Think "comfy sword & sorcery"

Don't be like that, it's kind of thinking that has people disregard homebrews like this as nothing more than magical realm shit.

Torchbearer Clans Thalas

Clan Thalas lead by the Lord Mason Amir Thalas settled in the West. Here the Lord Mason himself brought at great cost stone from the Mountain of which he constructed the great fortification known as Duskfall in his city of Thalasoran. The entire city is built to admire the sunset & it is said that Duskfall is the greatest bastion against the nightbeasts that roam beyond the nightfires. The people of Thalasoran are known to be honorable, dour & curt. Most settlements of Clan Thalas are fortifications first & villages second. Solid, circular & shallow with a large bonfire in the center where all can see. Almost all doors face the central fire with houses having thick walls on the outer rim edge. The laws of hospitality are more than tradition for the fortbuilders who take great stock in sanctuary & the sharing of bread.

So basically they use circular forts as towns with another circular common area in the middle where the community bonfire is tended. They usually build these at the top of hills. Not many free standing cities are built by them. They also tend to mark the passage of the Stars & Sun on bits of stone along the perimeter edge. (Kind of like Stonehenge) Duskfall itself is cleverly designed as to look particularly beautiful as the sun sets (hence the name). The Thalasorans come off as pessimistic as they always seem to be counting down to sunset & the end of things as their cultural fascination towards marking the end of cycles runs deep in their minds & in their architecture.

Torcherbearer Clan Badwa

Out in the great black desert, the dark sands catch the moon's light and spin its glow into an unearthly mirage, weathered spires of quartz and dunes of glittering dust sparkling like lonely stars in an empty black sea. The storytellers of the Badwa Clan say the desert was cast from the heavens for its sin, forgotten in time immemorial, staining its skin black with its shame as it was cast out. It longs to return home, and so wraps itself in the cloak of stars to comfort itself as it cries for its family.

The Badwa Clan roams the deserts in ones and twos as their sacred duty, carrying their lantern staffs aloft to guide those who have strayed too close to the desert and forgotten the true stars. Each clansman collects stories from those they rescue, and tells their own in turn to keep their companion's minds from the false stars at their feet until they have been safely guided to the desert's edge.

>>75873719
Not too sure really, but I think bio-luminescent furs and feathers might be a bit too far out. Maybe anglerfish like bulbs on some part of their bodies, so deer/elk with bulbs on the tips of their antlers? Or maybe some kind of herd animal, I can imagine the light produced by a bunch of them might be beneficial for anyone finding themselves out in the wilderness past nightfall.
>>
>>75875294
Why would these animals keep bioluminescent traits in a world that has a sun?

Also, deer who rutt on on trees covered in glow-in-the-dark moss would be cool because the lichen rubbing off on their horns would make them glow
>>
>>75875462
I mean, makes some sense considering the darkness is so dangerous, keep the darkbeasts at bay and all that. The only other option would be to just hide all night.

That said, the moss idea sounds just as cool, the more ways we can imagine nature interacting with itself the better.

Torcherbearer Clan Amrande

Also known to some as the meagerman, but they have a habit of wearing insults thrown at them as titles, tough this particular insult, has both truth and lie in it. They harsh lands of northeast, where the sparse forets meet the grey withs of the ashen steppe, are barren for most crops, yet wild herbs and fruit trees and bushes that adapted to these lands may bloom in the warmer months. And while stealing mik or even cattle is hardly punished, they are more then shepherds and ranchers, for these lands also bear riches - furs and leathers, horn and wood, even gold and silver in rivers and in the hills, which they use for their jewely works, which are worked into their clothing, to reflect and share the blessed lights and fires, which they equally like for their light and their warmth. Many of them live nomadic for the summer and maybe longer, scavenging and bringing back to their well-build wooden cities, that trade with the other clans, mostly for those goods their lands don't offer.
>>
>>75881369
Cont.

With them I like the idea of reciprocity beeing a lare part of their internal relationships, between families for example when engaging in trade or arranging marriages. They will seek compromise before combat, but have little mercy on those they need to fight. The divine lamplight on the other hands is shared with everyone, it shines off you, reflected by their jewelry unto others, and of course their leaders and elders have more jewelry to share more light etc, so that even with fewer lights, the wider community is save. Its more of a metaphor tough, I don't expect their jewelry to be up to the standars to modern reflective gear.

>>
>>75895688
I think a way to expand it would be for people to suggest rumors of lore of potential settlements or points of interest. They don't have to necessarily be true, but legends about a set of standing stones that howl on windless nights and can allow someone pure of heart to speak to the dead is the sort of thing that can make it feel like a bit of a wider world with stuff going on

>Why do they like insults?
They don't per se like them, but within their culture, they developed the habit of delibaretly taking insults as compliments, too quickly defuse situtations and don't let get arguments to heated. Due to their harsh enviroment all the families within a community need each other to survive, so longer discord is not good for the whole community. Someone will call you as dumb as an ox and you would quickly simle and reply, yes and as strong / diligent as one too etc.

True. Thats why I dont want us to endlessly bump & repost the thread. Id like to have five or six distinct Torchbearer Clans so that people have an firm basis on how to handle them. Forgot name

Btw, I was thinking. The torches of the OG Torchbearer Clans could have been lit by the fire of the Sun before it was placed in the sky. Because of this these rare & fabled fires would never go out (by normal means, room for a tragic & dark story of one being lost or something) they would also act like mini suns.
>>
>>75899102
>Thanks for clearing it up. Are they pacifists? They seem like they would be. Consider them added.
Thanks for adding them, been a while since I activly partipated in /tg/ stuff. I think you could say that they have some leaning towards it, but they are rather pacifistic out of pragmatical sense, than out of any ideals. They need each other to survive and to fend off the darkness and warfare and feuds would waste ressources. Criminals and people that hurt the wider community, are banished or killed and people outside the torch bearer clans are met with sceptisim or outright hostility and if they do go to war, they can be a bit ruthless, I think.

I know right? Later medieval arms are pretty slick, but there's something about Bronze Age gear that just feels so imaginative. All this proto-stuff made nearly five thousand years ago when they were just beginning to experiment and innovate with the shapes that'd then be refined over the next few millennia, and all the limitations they still had to work with. I think it's a perfect tech level for this kind of setting.

Wait.. you're not that other drawanon from the 40k homebrew sector thread, are you? If so, we meet again!
But yeah, exactly what I harped on last time. The design principles of bronze age arms and armour are so far removed from the common medieval designs that people instantly jump to, that it almost comes off as fantastical.

Why is nobody bumping this thread anymore?

It sounds like the sun emerged fairly recently on the geologic timescale, so it is unlikely animals would have lost their adaptations to perpetual night at this point of the setting.

I do wonder though, why does anyone in this setting have eyes instead of some kind of tremorsense organ?

Bump!

chucked it on suptg
>>
The only downside of this thread is that it wasn't bumped enough times. It fell to page two like, two or three times!

Bump for the Night

Its been maybe a thousand years since Sunstriker created the first fire. That being said, it could all be a myth & its also a fantasy land, no reason for evolution to play a strong hand. I mean, in Greek myth humans had four arms/legs & two heads before we were split

Rumor has it that albino spiders are actually the eyes of spider witches, detached and animated by their secret magic. Killing one is said to bring a curse upon one's head and house, though those who have captured one claim to have a witch appear in their dreams and bargain for the release of the bug.

Neat idea

How's about giving the setting some form of necromancy? Maybe spider witches make voodoo-like thralls by embedding their pupeteering spider silk onto/into unwitting forest bandits? Or maybe in extreme cases they can animate dead bodies as well, the silk acting like muscles?
>>
>>75910512
Perhaps not true necromancy, but I could certainly see a spider witch using silk to string up corpses and have them shuffle around like puppets in order to scare off intruders.

>>75910512
Fucking added, thats cool as shit. No true necromancy, just spiders puppeteering corpses in the Forest

I dunno, I figured the voodoo thrall idea would be an interesting way to add some danger and capriciousness to the spider witches. Like whenever someone seeks refuge with them, they run the risk of falling under their spell, or maybe it's the fate of some brusque bandits who disrespected a witch's "hospitality". Some people might find the practice abhorrent, but some would argue that bandits deserve it.

Perhaps you could also make it curable?
What inspired this idea was the "morgellons disease", something of an urban legend, it's supposedly a skin condition where fibrous parasites that resemble thin white hairs (like spider silk?) have embedded under someone's skin. Supposedly it's the reason people feel a tingling sensation when they hear high pitched noises (basically implying nearly everyone has it for the spooks).

So how does this creepypasta disease fit into all this? What if some healers/Lamplighters have actually made a cure for it? Perhaps some kind of instrument that can play a certain note that makes the pupeteering silk retreat from the victim's body?

Something like a thrall could come in the form of a spider witch's brews or poisons. A clueless bandit knocks on her door in the woods, and demands food and a place to sleep. She obliges, but by the time he's finished his meal, he's in a sluggish haze. No need to guide him on a string, simply directing him with properly worded suggestions and regular doses of the brew.

I wasn't really implying that the witch had to manipulate their webs to control the thralls, rather simply having the silk embedded under their skin would be enough for the witch to exert their will upon them.

That said, anyone else thinking Mads Mikkelsen from Death Stranding? Maybe having direct connection via the webs would make an even stronger link? Like the connected thralls are literally extentions of the witch's body?
>>
>>75913291
It may be best to leave vague. Perhaps Spider witches can manipulate others with just a thread, or perhaps they simply put a tether on their thralls to make it seem like they have such an impressive degree of control.

I'd imagine they'd have an easier time guiding spiders around in that way

Drawanon, here. What kind of aesthetic are we going with the spider witches?
>>
>>75914208
I think hairless and spindly, maybe them beeing a bit lanky.
>>
>>75914208
I was thinking classic witch dress in black silk. Web shaped embroidery on it. A spider broach black silk ribbon choker. A broad brimmed black hat. Where Moth Priestesses wear white silk with moth motifs, the spiders make black silk

I posted before that the witches magic is in illusion & enchantment & they use silk as the medium. Cobwebs over the eyes could have you seeing whatever the witch wanted you to see, webbing on your arm might allow the witch to "puppet" the arm & so forth. They might have webs strewn across the branches of the forest & make you see different terrain or even monsters or people who arent there.
>>
>>75914987
Spider Witches look like normal women though they might use illusion to male themselves prettier. Very rarely one with be cocooned & become more spiderlike, much like the Moth angels
>>
>>75916981
I remember a few threads back in was mentioned the spider witches have an extra pair of eye hidden under their hats. Is that something that some of them have, or is it only for ones who've gone through metamorphosis?
>>
>>75917493
Metamorphosis. They gain four spiderlike limbs which attach at the lower back & they have eight eyes on their head. They usually hide their extra limbs under their clothes & their eyes under a hat

Might I suggest large grass cloaks for the witches living in the Forest, for a slightly wilder look to contrast a bit with the Moth Priestesses? Darkened with soot and such to keep their profile.

Thats what the forest bandits wear. The witches have too much style to wear it
