Does anyone else really like Nechronica's pre-packaged setting? I know the game encourages you to make your own and that's cool and good, but I personally think the stuff they give you from the book and scenarios is really neat on its own. I mean, people say its vague and barely present but I find there's a lot to infer if you read the descriptions of enemy examples and the snippets of lore that are provided. It evokes a much more somber and depressing post-apocalyptic atmosphere than stuff like Fallout and such.
>>
>>70006756
It's perfectly serviceable. It's a bit too bare bones for me to get seriously attached towards but, like you said, I do appreciate the somber but not quite hopeless mood it evokes.

Kinda reminds me of Dark Souls a little.
>>
>>70006756
>word is fucked
>scientists bring back the dead as cute girl abominations
>lots of yuri
I like it. The conspiracy to turn the servant doll into a rebellion leader just for testing out the scenario that ended with the servant doll's cleaner falling in love with her was the kind of bittersweet that hits me right in the kokoro.
>>
>>70006756
Nechrotica is one of the most fucked up depressing settings I've ever seen in, well, anything really. It's a world without any joy, beauty, or love; there's not even the release of death to free you from the suffering.

Pity that the crunch is such complete bullshit. What's a better system to run it in? Mutants and Masterminds, maybe?
>>
>>70006866
You'd need something that could mimic the body part system.
>>
>>70006866
>multiple examples of joy, beauty, and love despite the hopeless setting
>anon says there isn't any
>>
>>70007199
the joy love and beauty is caused by the dolls, who struggle against the world (unless it's all a joke by the necromancers). The world itself has none of these things.

>>70007183
I just had the worst fucking idea. Nechrotica... with Mekton Zeta as the base.

Still working on my own Nechronica project so Imma bump this thread so it'll give me more ideas. One of my latest things is an enemy that's a tank with a zombie crew sealed inside and pointed at the enemy.
>>
>>70026658
You can go a step farther: just have an array of brains hooked up to a nerve/muscle network and stuck in their own little up-armored subsection. Everything is controlled via a web of tissues spread over the cabin (assuming the tank is a retrofit; if it's not then you can downsize the crew compartment dramatically and have them trundle around in a hilariously upgunned and armored minitank). Openings in the tank are nonexistent; visual ports are individual eyes encased in crystal/glass/some super material and suspended in saline.

It's true that basic undead 'recruits' are always valuable assets for the discerning Necromancer in a pinch, but they really could be so much more.
>>
>>70027970
That sounds pretty good too, yeah
>>
I'm also working on a nechronica-like setting. In fact its a total rip-off with a few key differences

>instead of dolls created by necromancers the PCs are one of several types of biomechanical cyborg (think Terminator with skin sheathe) with an implanted human personality
>They come in several types which were analogous to their intended role, but that ended up going FUBAR when the world ended
>The normal-ish ones are humanoid with room-temperature skin-sheathes and a few mutants which have things like two heads or four arms, but are otherwise just quasi-undead immortal humans with ennui issues
>Big type which are upper-half human and lower-half horse/lizard/tiger/giant spider/beetle/ect. Basically power lifters and humanoid tanks. They have chitinous plates for an exterior shaped into a human form. Movements expose synthetic muscle below
>Tall and fit types with bestial features which have a weak skeleton but powerful muscles. Bestial features include pointed ears, slit pupils, pointed teeth, leathery skin, ect. A cheap alternative to the normal cyborg which ended up having its own niche as tribal societies of zombie hunters
>Caste-based military types intended to work so that queen models would direct the swarm as a whole, drones would control things on the ground-level, and soldiers would fight while workers built up their encampments and served as cannon fodder. Now they just exist as paranoid jingoistic city-hives in an uneasy truce with the other factions. Also they have doll-like jointed skin that gets harder at the extremities.

I'm down for ideas for other variants as well.
>>
>>70028557
What system are you planning to run this in, out of curiosity? I assume the different player character types would be their classes? Mechanically speaking.
>>
>>70028884
Its actually a mod for dwarf fortress but as that is only tangentially related to /tg/ I was hoping to keep it vague. That said, if I were to use a ttrpg system, I'd just use a refluffed version of the actual nechronica game and replace classes/positions with my cyborg types. I just don't have anyone to play with so I live out my tabletop fantasies vicariously through an insanely elaborate simulator.

>>
>>70029078
Ah, I remember you posting about this in the previous thread. Welcome back, anon.

I think the only idea I'd have for a faction would be the obligatory bandit/outsider types who are stuck out into some inhospitable place that the other factions won't follow them, maybe some that are just kind of holding themselves together with scavenged parts and tape.

It's a little hard to suggest much without knowing more about the setting desu
>>
>>70030398
It's basically just straight-up Nechronica but instead of just little girls its emotionally compromised biomechanical Terminators of various shapes and sizes surviving in a world filled with zombies, mutants, and insane robots. I might add little girls at some point though as a potential variant model.

Kind of off topic, but since it's a nechronica thread, are there any tools to make chargen less crunchy? I picked up the core PDF a while back and glossed through most of it, but before I really sit down and start to grok the rules, if there's anything out there to make my life easier, I'd love to know about it.
>>
Is it just me or is Nechronica's default setting kind of not conductive to "organic" roleplay? I feel like you have to "force" roleplay because there just isn't much exciting stuff going on. Like there isn't any incentive for me to say or do anything because I can just picture cute undead girls doing cute things in my head and most of the time it'd be accurate to what's going on. And while I do like the battle system mechanically, it too sufffers from a similar problem as the default setting. From my experience players just become absorbed in the battle mechanics, forgetting to roleplay which makes it feel like a disconnected board game.
>>
>>70037362
Charger is easy.
Though figuring it out the first time is a bitch because it’s not the best laid out.

1. Pick, or random roll, a treasure
2. Pick a position
3. Pick a main class
4. Pick a secondary class (or pick the same class twice to open up a special skill for purchase)
5. Buy your skills
6. Talley your reinforcement part budget in Armaments, Mutations, and Enhancements.
6. Buy reinforcement parts.
7. Roll fetters toward the other PCs
8. Figure out who the fuck your character is.

Steps 1, 7, and 8 can be moved around.

Do you think Sgt. Oddball from Kelly’s Heroes be an Alice, Junk, Or Sorority?

I feel like he would be an Alice, but that’s mostly because what I remember of him is injecting a bit of levity and humanity into situations, even when it’s not appropriate, but he also commanded a group of tanks, soon just one tank, which may lean toward sorority.

I consider Junk another possibility for how he seems to adapt to the horrors of war.

Moriarty would be Oddball’s court.

I'm not sure if I understand where you're coming from. In my opinion, it seems pretty simple to just bake a motivation into your character and see what the GM let's you do with it. In no particular order my own characters boil down to
>wants to drag her sisters into comfy normalcy
>warring between her own thick-skulled altruism and the desire to keep herself safe
>the guardian and custodian to a location which no longer is; she needs a new purpose but her old one had warped her in odd ways
Not all of these shook out like I expected in actual play (and the second hasnt been field-tested yet), but they form solid enough foundations to keep things rolling.

If anything, I find my groups often have the opposite problem of getting stuck hard into roleplaying and forgetting to move things along.

I feel ya about not roleplaying during combat, Anon, but my problem is with pretty much every ttrpg. I want to play the combat carefully and mechanically, and then once it's pretty much done and over with, I'll start rping some. So I always play characters who are focused in combat to match myself.

Maybe you should try playing a way more outspoken character, so you're forced into talking more.

Do you have killer plants yet?

Weaponization of living beings didn’t stop at drones, people, and animals before the end times in Nechronica.

thematically Nechronica seems perfect for my friends who are kinda unfamiliar with a lot of tabletop stuff. I've never gm'd nechronica either. should we just stick to something more basic with a copied setting or is nechronica going to be understandable to a group of newbies?
>>
>>70041196
I'd say it's good enough for a buncha newbies, but only if they're already weebs or used to the aesthetic. Introducing non-weebs and non-gurofags to this would probably end with their perception of how ttrpgs are a bit skewed

I guess I should specify I'm talking about three separate characters, and if anyone here is one of the thread regulars then you've probably already heard a fair bit about them already, seeing as I've storytimed most of the games for the first and third characters. For anyone just joining us who's interested, in the order they're listed:
>Port, Sorority/Requiem/Romanesque.
>Sisters: Tachi, Protoca, Hope, and Lily
>Characterized by a strong sense of obligation to and trust in her sisters, her main goal is just ensuring everyone survives. If she can do everything right then they can all get out if this together.
>Just wants everything to be all right again.

>Meltie
>Or: ME#-LT#1-E#
>Or: MEU-LT61-ER
>Or: Medical Evac. Unit - Live Transport 61 - Emergency Response
>Automaton/Stacy/Thanatos
>Sister: Sofiya
>A girl literally of two minds. The assistant AI suite that controls the chassis and the occupant inside have echoed off each other so much that the two of them are hard to separate at the psychological level. Even so, the two are eternally at cross purpose as the AI fights to save the girl inside from her own self-destructive altruism.
>"Don't look at her, look at me! I'm big, I'm mean, I have A L L W E A P O N S F O R W A R D ! Come and get me!"
Meltie has yet to see play. She's slated for the campaign taking place after Port's wraps up.

>Scutigera Coleoptrata
>Scuti or Coleo for short
>Court/Baroque
>Sisters: Imp and Melico
>A quiet girl who works under her adoptive father, the head librarian and owner of the Great Library of Hombourg, England. She lives a peaceful life in a peaceful town, and would do anything to look after her friends
>"Never grow up? Imp, we aren't in Neverland."
Coleo was first envisioned as the mutant caretaker/pest control for a library that had started falling apart a long time ago. GM completely turned that on its head by putting Coleo in an actual community who are all totally unaware of the fact they're undead.

>what are zombie soldiers
>what are butchers

The enemy data portion of the book lists plenty of creatures that can be assumed to be male. How far is loli puritanicalism gonna go for you? Are all the generic zombies little girls? Are the big meat-cleaver-holding 12-foot monsters little girls? Are the swarms of non-Doll ghouls little girls? Do the carnivorous plants need to be little girls too? How about the nanomachine swarms and clouds of gas? Should they all be microscopic lolis as well?

There is plenty of room for non-loli undead enemies, and the base game even gives examples.

>>70043648
I went into Port's game completely blind, minus the actual stats on my own character sheet, so most of her personality developed over the course of roleplay. This was something I wanted to avoid with Coleo and Meltie, so I tried to have their personalities planned out better. Coleo has changed a bit since the beginning but I'm happier overall with how her character's panned out so far.

>>70043146
>Sophiya
I cant give you much more than the sparknotes on her since the game is still in the development phase.
What I can tell you is that she's a 21 year old Spanish woman who is also a gigantic weeaboo, complete with a kimono and katana combo. She harbors a fear for what her past might be, but hides her insecurity under a thick veneer of Chunibyo-syndrome. She also has an outrageously long name that I can never remember.
For anyone curious about the age, the GM specifically wanted us to play a higher age range than normal. Meltie is 18, for comparison.

>Melico
Imp and Melico are the only two people Coleo knows that come from outside the city. They both arrived in boxes on the back of a horse drawn cart, with no idea how they got there (the driver didnt know either, for that matter).
Melico is taciturn and very straight-to-business, which is fitting because she showed up in military fatigues and an ushanka. All work all the time, everything is to futher the mission or to secure the field. She has some very brief breaks in composure, and is sometimes affectionate towards Coleo. She has a particular fondness for flowers and may or may not be tsun for a rambunctious catboy friend of Coleo's (there are a fair number of animal/human hybrids in the city; Coleo is also friends with a moth girl).

Please remember that there's "Undead" which are people brought back to life/artificial creations given unlife and general horrors that can be pretty much anything you can imagine and then some.

"Dolls" are a special type of Undead that the player characters are. Dolls are almost exclusively female and have physical and perhaps more importantly to Necromancers, emotional abilities far beyond what their frames would suggest.

>>70045354
There is a lot of Doll art in the official books. There is also art of female undead such as Banshees and Nightmares fighting the Dolls, but non female Undead certainly do exist. Check the monster roster and see the shambling Soldiers, the lumbering Butchers or even the mechanical horrors of the Shredder and the Fallen Warrior.
>>
>>70045354
I read the official books but I presumed them to be depictions of dolls. It doesn't make sense to me that the generic enemies comprising the living dead of all of humanity would be entirely little girls. Necromancers making exclusively lolis is something I can put on my suspenders of disbelief for. Necromancers filling the wasteland with a disproportionate number of failed loli themed experiments is something I can accept. But the idea that every single undead monster in existence is a loli is just too absurd and in my opinion cheapens the experience. it means you can never do things like show the players a "family" of zombies, mindlessly repeating their last day alive over and over as they fall apart. They can't watch an army of adult soldiers marching for miles towards a destination they've long forgotten in the name of a country that doesn't exist. Each undead is like an echo of the past world that can be used to get an emotional response from the PCs, and while the present may be different the past was definitely not exclusively lolis and that ought to be taken into account.

>Imp
Imp is... damaged. In what ways I'm not completely sure of yet. Most prominently, she has an urge to collect things; most of these are clothes, which she keeps in a quantum basket that's bigger on the inside. She keeps an entire wardrobe with her, which she obsessively keeps in perfect condition (which is doubly impressive because, before waking up in Hombourg, neither her or Melico had ever seen water).

The other thing she collects are pieces of people. Particularly pieces of people that she thinks are beautiful (her player rolls a d10 every time we meet a new named NPC). Her and Coleo actually had a heart-to-heart about this last session, where Imp basically offered her neck up for Coleo to snap because Imp's protective of Coleo and worried that she herself might do something to harm Coleo or someone Coleo cares about. In a place like Hombourg she's very lost, because now her impulses have serious consequences beyond tearing apart a wild monster.

I'm not clear on what the dark streaks on her face are, but it's apparent that her body is very good at putting itself back together, moreso than normal for most undead.
>>
>>70045431
Dolls are exclusively female, not almost.
>>
>>70037470

>I feel like you have to "force" roleplay because there just isn't much exciting stuff going on. Like there isn't any incentive for me to say or do anything because I can just picture cute undead girls doing cute things in my head and most of the time it'd be accurate to what's going on

This is a very you problem. Having played across multiple campaigns, the only game where it was an issue was one where the GM intentionally went out of his way to deny us actual memory fragments, we still had the madness recovery but we had almost nothing of our own PC's experience to base their character on.

>>70045354
Pretty sure some of the official enemy art for horrors/legions are male. Also from the official books under the enemy sections.

>Soldier
>Roleplay: Soldiers who are still on duty in the post-war world are common threats. They will only show a cold expression as they shower you with bullets and care not for your screams. It's a Pawn that's not suitable for showing childish or girlish elements of a story, but it is a good way to introduce memories such as "Angel of Death" and "The Final War". A soldier's equipment, certifications, memos, terminals, etc may greatly influence scenarios and campaigns.

>Mad Gasser
>Roleplay: A Horror that looks like an insane man.

>Fallen Warrior
>Roleplay: It's easy to end up with a samurai from the name, but you can arrange it to have a different form. You could show it as a splatter horror movie like killer, a man with a monstrous sword, a knight with a sword or a girl with a knife. Even if you don't have a heart, the existence that wields a blade at high speed has it's own beauty. It can be tailored to be a neutral character or a runaway Doll or Savant.

Of course, getting in a tizzy over whether something in someone's game at some point has a dick is one of the dumber things to worry about.

Coleo nearly had a fit when she saw Imp was walking around without pants. The first thing we did in the first session was force Imp to get something proper to wear so she wasn't walking around all indecent in public.

>>70047724
They're like tattoos. Last time her and Coleo were talking she mentioned she'd remade her face to look like the person she loved. Or something to that effect. Her player is quite fond of mysteries so we'll have to see how things unfold.

I love it when legions horrors and savants and dolls come in strange forms or have a peculiar aesthetic, like being built to look like they are mobile stone artwork for instance.

Don’t get me wrong. Busted and rebuilt, industrial machinery, and “it should not run yet it does” are all also lovely. But since everyone is descended from manufactured things, you have the whole breadth of human creativity wrought in a high tech medium to work with.

Seeing bits of that can really sell the splendor and hubris of the bygone age of man.
>>
>>70054068
>>
>>70054068
I feel like in the cases you described they should still be visibly undead. Like if there was a mobile stone statue it would look like a normal statue at first, but when the thing moves the stone exterior cracks to reveal exposed muscle underneath
>>
>>70054075
>>
>>70054087
That seems kind of counter productive.

I imagine pre-apocalypse they wouldn’t go to the trouble of making them if their outsides fell apart easily.

Like can you imagine going to a themed casino in Vegas and the biorobotic staff that look like mobile statues had their skin fall off?

But if it was a case of a nechromancer, savant, or some other fucker just encasing somebody in some kind of stone mimicking epoxy as an experiment or punishment, then it starts to make more sense that the skin would shatter when the imprisoned finally began to move or break out.

You mean Junks, Holics, and Courts? Holics can scream it away, Courts can show that the spirit is strong when the flesh is weak, and Junks can tell the end of round madness to go fuck itself. There's also the raw power of Alice prayers (though these basically require a stacy to protect them).

Sorority's, conversely, really only get a +1 to madness and conversation checks and that's if they're already in madness. Neither secret whisper nor grace lets the sorority even benefit from that +1. Tough Love's ambiguous as to whether it can work on yourself. Most of your madness mitigation is for others, not yourself as a sorority.

>>
>>70056015

I got lucky.
My MAID group decided to give Nechronica a try.

It turned into a story of claustrophobic psychological horror.
It was amazing, though also very draining, to play.

Oldschool Retroclone/Oldstyle Roleplaying.
Basically, systems that attempt to capture the feel and design of older D&D systems. Back then, the game focused more on challenging player skill rather than character feats. Backstories had no part in it and "story" emerged during the game.
It's about exploration and overcoming challenges, surviving and getting loot. It's my preferred style of play because I can get really creative.
All the rules are super easy to change and remember. The pacing itself is very quick and exciting.

>>70056172
With "intented" I mean, what are you meant to do? Are you meant to go into dungeon like structures? Negotiate or do some resource managment to survivie the postapocalypse? Scavange abandoned buildings? What actually happens during the game when it's not a fight? What happens outside of conversations and roleplaying? What will the players be doing?
Sorry if my previous post was unclear and sorry if I'm collecting too many questions in one.

If I had to run it I would probably combine it with my comfort zone. The goal would probably be about getting resources, scavenging an abandoned underground tunnel feasting with undead. Sooner or later I'd run into trouble having to use the combat system that is a lot more elaborate than anything in B/X. This is the reason why I would like to see it played at least once.

>>70056222
That's the tone, a describtion but not the detail.
>>
>>70056339
Ok this helps a lot Anon.

When I get off my shift if a few hours I’ll see about explaining some of the breadth of Nechronica so you can approach figuring out what you want to do with it.

Don’t let anyone try to pigeonhole you into some highly specific thing Nechronica is “meant for”.
>>
.>>70055723

It does depend on a couple factors, but just preventing the madness to begin with is much stronger than removing existing madness due to the per phase limit.

>>70054397
Conversation check bonuses are one of the least efficient buys for madness mitigation, especially because one of the issues is that there's no way to lose more madness points in combat without picking up a skill or part, so 1/3rd of the potential madness you can lose during phases is just not gonna happen. Conversation check bonuses don't help with that unless someone bought something to get conversation checks in combat, coordination with the team is obviously best but you can cover your own ass.

>Alice
Prayer is the order of the day, though this depends on if your GM reads that skills that say "your sisters" affects you too. If not, this is just a godsend for the others, but it's still the strongest skill for madness removal as long as you can build around not getting it fucked up, just see that someone else in the party wants to help you out for helping them out. Conversation check bonuses are nice, but they're really only gonna pay off if you get maiden/voice effect or have a sorority.

>Automaton
Heart of ice is mediocre but an option, I Am A Doll keeps you going if you get in the real shit, but isn't useful if you're doing well. Reckless, however, is pretty good if you're fine breaking parts instead of madness for rerolls. Tears of Blood and Foes are Foes depends on how much you think Spirit attacks are gonna be a threat and if you're fine burning more parts,

>Court
Restraint is really damn strong because it makes the check a success, so it doesn't count against the limit.

>Holic
Limit of Madness is great, but you gotta keep in mind that you're going to have to move to not be in the same zone as your sisters, unless you wanna be a cunt. Antenna is also a must if you want to use the abilities. Really, Antenna's great for any skill that costs madness.
>>
>>70056609
continued

>Junk
Damaged Goods is great, the end of round madness gains are a pretty serious threat early on unless your GM is softballing fights and you clear in one round. Not getting fucked if your treasure gets busted is a nice little bonus too.

>Sorority
Like mentioned before, Self-control is the only thing that actually helps you personally. The rest is only for the rest of the party. Taking advantage of it is possible, but you're gonna need something like a devoted fetter or the like where leaving it filled is less of an active detriment.

Things that indirectly make madness easier to handle is just more AP and getting more attacks/damage in because the sooner you can kill shit in combat, the less you take from combat madness/spirit attacks.
>>
>>70056743

And forgot to mention that if you're worried about madness still, you can play a support focused build so you never have to bother rerolling attack checks with madness (and saving your sisters the trouble of doing so as well via supports.)
>>
>>70056339
The AP system is easy once you’ve read up and played through it.

I find what would really help with the AP system is to have a physical scale with AP values on it so when you act you move yourself down the chart as appropriate- it's a lot more intuitive if you have a physical representation youre interacting with.
>>
>>70057756

The default battlemap does have an AP scale that you put counters of your choosing on and move them down as you declare maneuvers.

My two campaigns are pretty different, but I can give you an example of what my experience with the game as been so far.

For the Port game, in most sessions the DM starts us out in a new location. The bulk of the game will usually be exploring said location, usually loosely blocked out on our virtual tabletop. Exploration consists of us moving through areas, sometimes facing a minor environmental hazard or sometimes a chump enemy like a zombie or automated turret; something dangerous to break a part or two on someone without threatening the party as a whole. During the exploration there tends to be a fair bit of role play between the party and environmental storytelling from the DM.

If an area is large enough that a map can't realistically be blocked out, such as if we're outdoors, then the DM will usually have us wander around a bit and get a feel for the place before Quantum Ogre-ing us into something important. Most sessions will be capped off with combat, though we're known to roleplay enough that the exploration segment can take a session by itself to complete. The last few sessions in particular have been exploration-heavy, which is fun for us but you might want a bit more action in your game.

If we run out of time before a session can be completed then we have the luxury of just saving the game-state of the map and resuming later, since we play on Tabletop Sim (if you do this, be careful if you use some Workshop assets; we had an issue for a while where the DM couldn't save the map and it turned out to be an issue with some custom tiles he had put on the map). Combat is snappy if your players remember what's actually on their sheets, which means it takes forever for us but shouldn't with a group that's actually competent.

The Coleo campaign is far, far more laid back. It mostly takes the form of Roleplay over a group chat, and is very character driven compared to the Port campaign. I'd mostly attribute this discrepancy between the games to the Port campaign being post-apoc horror and the Coleo game taking place in a(n apparently) fully functioning society, complete with lots of people. It's making the transition to horror the deeper we get into it, but right now there's lots of talking and investigation.

For some scale, since the start of the game last Summer we've only had two combats despite mostly succeeding to maintain a weekly schedule.

Nechronica's social mechanics and loose-but-not-absent out of combat mechanics seem to make the game fit pretty well into this niche, though it requires a lot of effort from your players and the DM to keep things rolling; a lot of what's made the game work so well is the back and forth our DM has been maintaining with the group (he's new to running games generally, and has less experience with Nech than myself and one of the other players while the third player is also an experienced DM, so the exchange of info has been helpful for everyone).

>>70057756
There's a full-sized battlemap available on the Wiki, though the words on it haven't been translated. If you get the Workshop mod for Tabletop Sim it comes with this map fully translated, and it's the one we use most often.

In case you're having any issues wrapping your head around the flow of combat or some of the mechanics, I wrote this example combat (with some condensed rules) up for some other anons in another thread. They said they found it helpful so hopefully it actually is.

>>70058524
Basically, you try and keep the feeling of player choice as much as you can without compromising on game integrity, or overloading yourself for prep, by having some outcomes be inevitable regardless of player choice. In the example the idea is named for, a party comes to a fork in the road and must choose which way to go. The group chooses to go left. As they travel down the road they are set upon by an ogre, and combat begins!

But the truth is that they'd have also met the ogre if they'd chosen to travel down the path to the right, because the DM didn't actually prepare a unique encounter for either path but still wanted to keep the players engaged in the traveling portion of the game. Thus is the ogre is a Quantum Ogre because it simultaneously exists along both paths until the party stumbles into it.

In an episodic game like Nechronica you could think of it as an 'all roads lead to Rome' situation. Combats are pretty much required to be statted out before the start of a session so all choices must ultimately lead towards the combat encounter. In a confined space like a house or bunker this is pretty simple; the party explores until they run into something nasty and then the fight starts. In an open environment it's way trickier to do that organically, so the DM will have us hit landmarks and important areas almost regardless of what we wind up doing (aside from choosing to just leave, ostensibly) and eventually lead us into the combat encounter. No matter where we go, it's always toward the encounter.

It's a bit of a trick to apply properly, and you should really only do it where it makes sense to, but it's a pretty handy technique if you can keep up the subtlety.

Personally not a fan of that one, both aesthetically or practically. Aesthetically, the stitched wound of the AP counter and the way Tartarus ends in an archway like it's an entrance into some sort of arena creates a much nicer aesthetic than the random splashes of blood on the other one.

Practically, you don't really want to allow PCs to near 20 AP, let alone 25. If it's just for enemies, that's a lot of map that isn't going to see use a lot. Also it makes limbo slap fights that have a lot of actors an even bigger pain to manage. More power to anyone who likes it.

>>70056339

Having played/run over at least a dozen campaigns, the typical thing is that you have the players prod and explore the scene as you lay it out, role play, and what have you, but ultimately guiding them towards the combat encounter. It's very much "theater of the mind" stuff, but you can have some sort of map if that's really your fancy. For non-combat rules, there's making action checks as appropriate, but if you want something more crunchy, you'll have to do it yourself as even the scenarios follow the "lead the player to the fight, make up details on the way."

Ok I’m finally off work.

A lot of Nechronica games actually start with the PCs not knowing much of anything about their past. Rediscovering parts of the memory soup their were assembled from is actually a game mechanic, the first six are important milestones as they increase your ability to remove madness points between combat.

So remembering your past(s) while you do things, or actively chasing your past are both things you can do.

If you want to start “closer to home” you can certainly have your dolls delving into the forgotten underground ruins of a nechromancers old facilities for something important, to the dolls, the nechromancer, or the savants the nechromancer is using to manipulate the dolls.

Something very VERY important to keep track of is madness points.

Unless they are facing some great crushing force of nature, dolls are pretty much always more vulnerable to ruin by accumulation of madness then by damage.
Each starts the game with all their fetter one point away from going into full madness, and can only at most get rid of two madness points before combat.

At the end of each full turn of combat all dolls, except Junks who invest in a special skill, all get 1 automatic madness point.

Any time a fetter fills up it leavies a penalty or forced behavior on the PC that can range from problematic to debilitating for themselves and problematic for the party.

So your party needs to do their best to keep each other mentally functional and you as the GM need to make sure they know that, and avoid showing enemies with Spirit Attacks at the party until they are equipped to get rid of larger amounts of madness.

Spirit attacks are like stress attacks in Darkest Dungeon, they inflict madness points instead of physical damage.

While the lexicon states that "When all Fetters are filled with Madness Points, the Dolls will fall out of the Player's control." The actual section on madness states
>"If all of a Doll's Fetters accumulate 4 Madness Points, and they receive additional Madness Points which they are unable to hold, that Doll enters a Broken-Hearted state. The sisters of a Doll who is Broken-Hearted cannot make Conversation Checks targeted at her (though she can still make checks targeted at them.)"

And that the dolls are lost if they are all broken hearted. This seems to be a case of either a bad translation or bad editting in the original book one way or another.

Might as well give a quick rundown of the relevant parts too to bump the thread

>Karma Processor
Didn't like it at first, still don't. Break the reinforcement part to avoid a point of madness. It can work as a stop gap until you get more effective means of handling madness, and swapping it is easy since you can just use it one last time and swap it out. It's one and done nature is its downfall here and will stop being that valuable in longer games where madness tends to become less of an issue.

>Voice Effect
Relatively Expensive at 2 AP and once per round, but if someone's picking up shit for conversation check bonuses, it can pay off (since you can't really RP enough to get decent bonuses otherwise in combat unless the GM is nice).

>Antenna
A must have for Holics, really handy for psychedelics, Courts with Scape Goat and Psychoblaster users can also find it pretty damn handy since it means you just don't pay the madness cost once per round.

>Boy
Frankly, it'd be better off as a tier 1, there's a bit too much competition in tier 2 mutations to make it worth the pick and it's really only worth considering if there's multiple ways to get conversation checks in combat.

>Happy Pills
A solid, reliable, non-class dependent way to lose madness in a fight. The downside is that Tier 3 mutation is a really strong category with a lot of strong parts. It's damn good, but it's up against some of the best parts in the game. So a great pick if you're worried about madness, but can be seen as compromising in your ability to fight.

>>70071511
Yup, I don't wanna mess up someone else's time if I end up not being able to attend. My ideal game format is like, you know those freeform servers? Could be forum, IRC, discord, ect. You just dick around and talk to people until the moderators set up an event where Plot happens and then you can do that plot stuff for a bit before going back to slice of life and small, quickly-resolved conflicts. Something like that but with proper stats and a community that isn't totally garbage (ie filled with egotistical basket cases) would be great. I could just be a side-character who pops up at random on my own time when I know I'll be free, which would work a lot better than a consistent date which I definitely wouldn't be able to keep up with.

Coleo update. Holidays has me a bit busy so this string of posts will really all I'll have time to compile before the game tonight.

>It is the second day of Coleo's grounding.
>It's been a busy day with sewing, interviews, work around the library, people watching, and more.
>As the clear sunny sky changes from blue to gold Imp finds herself out in the library's yard, a serenely orderly English lawn with well manicured grass and a twisting path dotted with benches and reading alcoves and a massive shade tree.
>The air is sweet, warm, and slightly humid. Thankfully the lawn itself is mercifully bereft of patrons or groundskeepers at the moment.
>Imp doesn't waste any time with pursuing her objective. On making sure there was no one else present, she steps with purpose to the tree, slings her chainsaw over one shoulder [by a strap, retrieved from her basket], and begins to ascend it.
>The bark is dry and aromatic, vivid and alive, or at least it seems that way, its certainly different from the mummified husks she's encountered before.
>As she ascends the trunk into the sturdy branches that hold up the leafy canopy, the branches move with the wind, and with her weight.
>Melico glances out one of the library windows as the sun sets. She still wasn't used to the idea of seeing the sun, but the stark change in light was a pleasant change from the slow fading of ambient light in the wastes.
>Hold on.
>"Hey Coleo>" Melico had been bothering Coleo all day, asking for assistance with maps of the area.
>"Is that Imp?"
>Coleo, currently with her trunk half-way up a scroll shelf, leans sideways so she can get a better look out of the window, tilting herself like a living ladder. "I... I think so. Wonder what she's doing in the tree."
>As Imp gets up to a branch capable of taking her weight a little noise registers in her ear. It's staccato, high pitched, and seems... almost furious and indignant.
>>
>>70072596
>There is a flash of movement and her eyes land on a hand-sized rodent with a tail as long as it's body - chitter shrieking at her.
>It's several feet up and gracefully gallops along the branch till it reaches the trunk, which it climbs and turns upon until its clinging upside down, baring its tiny incisors and continuing to chitter at Imp in an impotent bluster from a distance of about about one and a half of her own body lengths up.
>Ignoring the pest for the moment, Imp continues climbing. If it got closer, then she might bother with it.
>Coleo's mandibles part slightly as she sees the squirrel. "Ooh. I haven't seen a squirrel on the grounds in a while." She turns to look down at Melico. "You want to take a break and see what Imp's up to?"
>Melico nods. "Yes, it might be a good idea. She's getting pretty high up. She's at least reached the second floor of the library."
>The view Imp surveys grows as she move into the slightly cooler air.
>The squirrel retreats higher, before hesitating, the bolting down a branch, scrambling down to a lower limb as far to the periphery as possible, then leaping ot the ground and bolting in the open across shortest distance to exit the lawn.
>The tree is now uncontested.
>"Aw..." Coleo watches the squirrel skitter away as she backs herself down the shelf. "I haven't actually caught any squirrel in a long time." She starts shuffling down the aisle. "C'mon, lets head over and see what's up."
>Imp finds a sturdy place to sit with a number of thinner branches within reach, bearing leaves .
>Imp - testing how her weight shifts - peers at the stems of the leafs, before plucking one and running it between her fingers, tapping the end of the leaf to feel it, and so forth. Testing its texture, whether or not it contained water and chlorophyl.
>Coleo and Melico file out into the yard. Coleo brings a a pair of hands up to her mouth as an impromptu megaphone. "Imp, what are you doing in the tree?"
>>
>>70072626
>"...I am examining the leaves," Imp returns, flipping one between her finger. "They are real."
>Melico calls up after Imp, leaning her head back as she shouts. "You should come down. You're rather visible up there. Grab some and come down and we can both look at them."
>Shrugging, Imp grabs a handful, pockets them, then wraps her hands around the branch and carefully drops down so that she's hanging from it, without jolting the branch.
>Then she begins to swing a bit.
>"Hmm." Coleo blinks once as she considers Melico's words. "I guess that makes sense." She looks back up to Imp. "You want any help getting down?"
>Leaves rustle as the branch begins to move as Imp swings from it. A few acorns fall from it sprinkling near Melico and Coleo.
>Letting go, Imp allows herself to drop at a slight angle, bending her knees and moving with the fall to reduce impact as she lands.
>Coleo's eyes go wide as Imp drops. "What are you-?!"
>Imp slams into the moist dirt like a dart, sinking up to her knees in loam as her metal-reinforced bones absorb the impact.
>And then Imp is on the ground, apparently... no worse for wear? It doesn't stop Coleo from hurrying forward. "Imp, are you okay?! That was- That was very irresponsible!"
>"It's fine. I've dropped from further." Imp answers, extracting herself from the grass. Reaching into her bag, she hands Melico the requested leafs.
>Coleo fusses over Imp a little more, but is resoundingly ignored as Imp and Melico plod back into the library to look over the leafs, leaving her to resume her normal duties around the Library.

==Later that night==

>As night falls fully over the town and everyone else has gone to bed, Melico knocks on the door to Imp's room.
>"Imp. I'm going out again tonight. Do you want to joint me?"
>The door opens quickly. "Sure. Where too? Will there be cutting?" Imp questions, rapidly.
>>
>>70072653
>Melico's response is ordered and monotone. "I'm going to take a look at the edge of town. Coleo showed me some maps of the nearby area, so I have a good idea ow where it should be. We might encounter the one that was missing from last night, so you may want to bring your chainsaw."
>"...Why wouldn't I bring my chainsaw?" Imp tilts her head. It's strapped over her shoulder with her basket, even now.
>Melico adjusts the strap holding her AT Rifle to her back. "Fair point."
>Melico and Imp leave and make their way toward the edge of town, keeping off the main road. Melico looks ahead, walking purposefully through the streets, navigating by her memory of the maps she had memorized earlier that day.
>"Imp, what do you think about everything that's been going on these past two days?"
>"It's frustrating. It's interesting." Imp's response is perfectly measure and coherent. That doesn't make it necessarily articulate. "It's confusing. I want it to stop, and I want it to keep going. I don't know what to think."
>"I couldn't agree more." Melico's voice is deadpan. "Nothing in this place is right."
>The two walk over a bridge crossing a river before heading through another back street. "Things don't work the way they should. People don't act the way they should. Everything is too clean."
>Melico takes a moment to look down at the water. "But at the same time, everything feels so... normal. Like how it was. As if it should always have been that way. It's... peaceful. And I can't remember the last time it was."
>Imp clenches her fist a bit. "I can't remember how long it's been, but it definitely happened."
>Melico gives a non-committal "Maybe." and continues walking.
>The buildings were getting small, less densely packed. "But that was what things were. What they are is different. There are no buildings, no leaves, no police. New people and creatures are more likely to kill you. Loose ends are eliminated, not left at a doorstep."
>>
>>70072683
>Melico pauses, walking wordlessly down the road. Eventually, she looks up toward the sky. "When was the last time you saw the Moon?"
>Imp searches her memory, but finds nothing. "...No idea. I don't remember ever seeing it before, but..." She looks at it, frowning, "...I still know it's the moon."
>"Me neither. It's the same with stars and the sun and blue skies with clouds. I know what they are. I know it's right. But it's not normal, is it? Not now."
>"I haven't seen any since I started walking, no." Imp agrees.
>The side roads were becoming less frequent, the main road becoming smaller. The edge of town wasn't far off. Melico resumes. "It's not right. We need to get out. We can't stay here, there's too much off about this place."
>Melico grows silent once more, the hint of a frown edging at her mouth. "Do you want to stay here?"
>Imp frowns as well, "I... don't know where else to go. If we just... leave, then... well, then what?"
>What buildings remained around them were small. The road opened up before them into vast fields of wheat. The had reached the edge, the majority of town behind them. Melico stopped and looked out to the moonlit expanse.
>"I don't know. I don't want to think about it." She turns back and starts to head in to town again. "Let's walk the border of town a bit. See if there's anything else."
>"...Sure." Imp follows, not knowing what to say. Instead, she just walks behind Melico, like a puppet. Like a doll.
>The thought burns. "Do you remember love?" Imp asks, out of nowhere, to say something.
>"Love?"
>Imp is quick to clarify. "Sorry. Loving someone. Someone loving you. Feeling." She trails off.
>Melico grips the strap of her rifle, adjusting it slightly on her shoulder. "I... No, I don't think so." She lowers her head and pulls her hat down tighter on her head. "Do you?"
>"Yes." Imp says it without any hesitation. "But, in the end, I may have just been confusing it for something else."
>"Was it nice?"
>>
>>70072693
>"It was like a dream." Imp says wistfully.
>"How did it end?"
>Imp frowns, thinking. "The last thing I remember before waking up, you mean?"
>Melico glances toward Imp, her face plain. "Is that when the dream ended?"
>"There was a door," Imp says, "A door that should never have been opened... and then the wastes. Gasping for air, like I was drowning... but there was no water. No water anywhere." She sighs and shrugs, "I don't really remember anything useful. I don't think I want to." But she had to.
>Melico looks forward again. "Do you regret having dreamed?" A strange note hangs in her voice, something more than a question, as if the answer she was looking for was for something else.
>"No." Imp denies, again with absolute certainty. "I don't regret dreaming at all."
>"Hmm..." A frown creeps onto Melico's face once more. Though this one appears different, not one of confusion or frustration. "I wish I had dreamed like that."
>"You still can," Imp suggests, "though you might also regret it. That's the trouble with dreaming."
>"Perhaps..." The frown on Melico's face washes back to her inscrutable mask once more. "We should probably head back. Sunrise isn't too far off. Hopefully Coleo and Windsor don't worry we were out."

~~~~~~
>Coleo's sleep is peaceful that night.
>She dreams.
>The deck rolls gently in the hot, humid air as the sun pounds down from above. Coleo stands at the wheel, boys, mates, and seamen work on the deck and rigging ahead of her as she guides the ship through a gentle swells that make the deck roll just so.
>Captain Cersei stands beside her, looking positively regal in her blue uniform and bicorn, bringing her spyglass up to one of her forward facing eyes.
>Ahead the pirate sloop makes best speed, hoping to loose the roayl vessel in the treacherous shallow waters off the shores of the Carolina colony, It’s going to take all of Coleo's skill to overtake and bring her to battle before she can.
>Captain Donovan must be stopped.
>>
>>70072741
>It takes all the strength in Coleo's six arms to keep the ship's bow true to course. The boat falls and bucks. "Swell to starboard, lads!" she hollers over the noise of the surf and spilling foam.
>The topmen and linemen move as one to beg, borrow and cheat every bit of speed they can from the wind. Coleo's blood begins to race as she realizes the stern of the Nine Lives is growing larger and larger.
>The first green peaks appear on the horizon as Coleo begins to pick out individual pirates moving about on the deck.
>It was a spirited chase, they almost made it, but the King's justice has finally caught up with these demons of the sea.
>Cersei chuckles confidently. "Run out the guns and prepare boarding teams!"
>A cheer goes up from the crew at the order.
>From the stern Coleo sees a dashing figure in black trying rouse the men of the Nine Lives in the face of the might of the Royal Navy.
>The ship heaves again. Coleo's heart is all the way up in her throat as she fights the waves, pushing the bow right through a tall peak and dipping deep into the following valley. Caught in the moment, she begins to shout the opening lyrics to 'Barrett's Privateers,' Barret swapped for Denver.
>"...But I'm a broken man on a Halifax peer, The last of Denver's Privateers!"
>To your surprise your infamously cold and sober Captain joins you on the next line. It's... she's not a singer, but soon half the deck crew is following you in song.
>The Nine Lives almost seems to sag as you begin to overtake her. Captain Donovan has been driven to such distraction that he's scowling at Coleo and Cersei from the rail of the afterdeck. Too incensed to find immediate words.
>"Ye 'ave one chance, Donovan!" Coleo hollers at the top of her lungs. "Queen's Navy's got a need fer scallywags such as you. All yer sins up in smoke if you'll only swallow your blasted pride and fly the flag!"
>>
>>70072784
>There's a tense moment, as both ships plow though water, gun crews at the ready, weatherdecks and rigging filled with men ready to do or die.
>Coleo could swear that she could see Captain Donovan's face turn red with fury before he gives a strangled half choke. He lowers his head. and then...
>"God Save The Queen!" He spits. And then raises his head repeats at a louder volume, forcing himself to speak the words as if they're palatable.
>"GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!"
>Crewman of the Nine Lives begin to repeat the words with varying levels of bitterness, relief, and motivated enthusiasm as they lower their weapons and run the guns back in.
>Captain Cersie waits a moment, before shouting the crew down from the patronizing song. She reguards the Nine Lives with a smug smile, clearly savoring the moment, before turning to look at Coleo with an undreadable expression.
>She raises an eyebrow "You're excused for speaking out of turn, Miss Coleoptrata." She smiles. "Nicely done."
>Coleo glows like a lamp. The moment Cersei isn't looking, she raises herself to half-again her normal height and offers Denver an enthusiastic wave.
>Coleo rises peacefully in the morning, the warmth of her dream carrying her through the early part of the day like a stiff wind in her sails.
And fin for now. Sorry it's mostly just small developments in this bit. Thinks start to pick up a bit after, but the Slice of Life stuff goes on a little longer.
Can confirm.
I often type up my posts in a word processor before posting them so I can quickly spell check them before posting.
This doesn’t catch as much as it should. It gets a lot worse when I’m tired and rushing.
Would you even need to change the city that much? I haven't watched it, but I feel like all you'd really need to add is some wandering undead and you'd basically have a proper environment.
>The sun peeks through the clouds for a moment, before snuggling back behind it's comfortable grey blanket.
>It's there. It's on the lawn, and this time she's going to get it. It's bushy tail twitches and it stands up, looking around, before going back to digging at the lawn for something.
>It hasn't seen her yet, it would have sprinted off the property if it had.
>'So it doesn't live on the property. I guess I knew that.' Coleo glowers at the squirrel from her perch, her body wrapped tightly around the trunk of the largest tree on the property. She's well off the ground, in the thickest part of the leaves.
>Slowly, one foot at a time, she inches her way a little farther down the tree, trying to make as little noise as possible as she watches the furball through the branches. 'A little closer... A little closer...' It's not that far from the base.
>It is with predatory grace and cunning that Coleo makes her way down the mighty oak.
>Her prey, though ever cautious, remains none the wiser.
>Step by step, her myriad of legs do a wonderful job of displacing Coleo's weight all along the tree, keeping her descent virtually silent against the ever-present din of Humbourgs' city life.
>Step.
>Step.
>Step...
>It's almost close enough to snatch up. Just a little farther. Her head is peaking out underneath the boughs now.
>Step...
>.... Step....
>SNAP
>Just as Coleo's waist drops down out of the leaves, her jaw parts and her tongue lashes out, snapping like a rubber band. The teeth on the end of her tongue dig into the squirrel's hindquarters and whip it upward and into Coleo's waiting mandibles.
>There's a very loud crunch as her jaws lock down, crushing the squirrel's neck and skull in an instant. She savors the flavor for a moment, even as the body spasms, before swallowing her prey whole.
>>
>>70079014
>As she descends from the tree, she pulls a handkerchief from her breast pocket and dabs the blood from her lips and chin, a self-satisfied grin on her face that wouldn't look out of place on a cat.
>A long whistle comes from the direction of the alley between the quarters and the library.
>"Nice one!" Denver says as he swaggers into the lawn propper. He grins. "No acorn thief is safe around here." It's as mocking as it is genuine praise.
>Coleo giggles as her back end finally finishes crawling down from the oak. "Not with Scutigera Coleoptrata on the hunt!" She says before putting on an outrageously horrible fake German accent. "Jaeger meister extraordinaire!"
>She breaks into another bout of giggles. "I'm almost surprised you didn't chase it off. How long were you watching?"
>"Only saw when you broke cover to strike."
>But soon enough he's changed the subject. "Wanna see something else?" he says with a confident excitement.
>Coleo blinks, her expression blanking in mild confusion as a pair of hands idly re-folds and stores the handkerchief. "Something else? Sure, I suppose."
>"Ok just stand there for a tick."
>A long whistle comes from the direction of the alley between the quarters and the library.
>"Nice one!" Denver says as he swaggers into the lawn propper. He grins. "No acorn thief is safe around here." It's as mocking as it is genuine praise.
>Coleo blinks, her expression blanking in mild confusion as a pair of hands idly re-folds and stores the handkerchief. "Something else? Sure, I suppose."
>"Ok just stand there for a tick."
>They're different from the sort of loose and freewheeling kicks Coleo's used to seeing him do when he's jumping around to burn off excess energy or showing off while scrambling. There's an economy of motion and method to them.
>For all the grace of it, he's grinning like a fool by the end.
>Once it's over he stands there and bounces up and down on his toes, once again the cat Coleo's always known him to be.
>"What'cha think?"
>Coleo blinks in surprise. "I don't think I've ever actually seen you move with deliberate motion in my life. Did Rasmus mail you a fighting book from India? I don't remember any of those forms in our martial books."
>"They are!" He shouts with giddy, yes giddy, excitement before getting a handle on his volume. "They are, they absolutely are."
>"They were right in front of us the whole time, just in bits and pieces, not together."
>"The key was when I was re-reading the journal of that posh bloke with the whiskers. He mentioned steps, and I realized, that's how they keep everything straight in their heads for practice. They make dances out of them and go through the steps. Then I just had to start building them up from the little snippets. That's the first one I think I've gotten together that flows good."
>He's talking a mile a minute and his eyes are like saucers but he's still very much paying attention and is having an excited conversation rather than departing into ranting.
>Coleo's eyes go pretty wide as well. It's been a long time since she's seen Denver so excited. "That... makes sense. It does look smooth. Have you actually sparred with anyone yet? To test the sequence?"
>He looks away as though at a passing bird "Iiiii might 'ave run off a couple-three blokes what was spoiling for a row outside a pub."
>>
>>70079051
>Coleo's brows go up in alarm. "You went barking for a round against a gang of rowdy drunkards?! You could have gotten hurt, you stupid cat!" She swats at one of his ears. "Next time I hope they bust a bottle over that thick skull of yours. Maybe the beer will cool you off." She huffs and puffs a little more before regaining her composure, crossing her arms over her chest.
>"But you really fought off three older blokes with it?"
>"Ahh-ahh. Oww." He shakes his head, sending his long hair and ears flopping.
>"Okay your right, it was stupid-but yeah. It's like even though you've baked the different bits into a dance so you don't have to keep track of em while you practise, they stay broken up so as you practice they all get more ready in your 'ead for when you need em."
>"And ye. Sent em off good and proper." He's grinning again.
>Coleo's jaw works as she thinks. "I guess that makes sense. I think I've heard some of the soldiers call it 'muscle memory' or body memory. You drill enough and even if you're under stress your body remembers what to do. S'why they have them repeat everything a thousand times. Never heard about any dances though."
>Her jaw works a little more before she looks down at her own forelegs. "It's a shame I can't really... y'know." She lifts up a leg. "Not really built for the kicking thing."
>"But you've got six arms, and a strong trunk besides. Hey, if we keep digging I'm sure we can put together one for centipedes. I mean I just bodged this one together by pulling parts out of the bin till I had a bunch that fit."
>He sets his feet and raises his hands. "Let's start going though some blocks and strikes and find somethin' to start building off of."
>"Hmm..." Coleo taps her chin. "You might be right. But... do you think we should be doing this out on the lawn? I don't know if Papa would be too happy if he saw you pop me in the face, you know?"
>>
>>70079078
>"I'm not gonna hit ya. We're gonna do it slow." He shifts his hips then sends his hand forward, the snappy motion slowed to a deliberate snails pace. "Gotta get a feel for what parts might fit together." He adjusts the alignment of his hand to better transfer impact from his hand up though his arm, instead of tweaking his wrist. "Here you punch first an I'll block. Remember, go slow."
>Coleo looks less than convinced, but gets into something resembling a fighting stance anyway. She puts her arms up like she's a set of three boxers layered over each other, with each hand on either side just far enough apart to be out of the others' way. Her form is... proper, but clearly not practiced. "Well, all right then."
~~~~~~
>The shadows grow long on the fourth floor of the Grand Library as the sun slowly sinks behind the obscuring buildings of Humbourg.
>Coleo slides another book home as the warm waning light falls in around her.
>A creak of the long long roof rolls by over her head.
>Coleo turns to look at the ceiling. An icy feeling creeps up her spine as she traces a shadow in the rafters. Sometimes she thinks the Library feels a bit out of one of those cheap horror stories for kids.
>The thought of the Library being haunted flits through her head. She chuckles at the thought.
>... But the shadows do seem a little longer than normal, now that she thinks of it.
>Distorted, angular shadows slowly advance across their crepuscular arcs as they do each day, tickling at the edges of your periphery like people flowing past on the sidewalk. Another book slides home in the warm close air.
>THUMP
>Something slams at the far end of the row toward the rear of the library.
>Coleo jumps, and whips her head around. What was that?
>She moves over to the end of the isle and climbs up the book case so the forward half of her trunk is propped up, and then leans over to try and survey the isle.
>>
>>70079095
>As she scans the tops of the shelves and down as far as you can into the canyons of edification a few things tickle in her vision, but nothing solid comes under her gaze, looking all the way down the aisle she sees no one and nothing out of place.
>At the far end of her own aisle, through a distant window, she sees the outline of several predatory birds soaring above the spreads of low roofs. In the distance a flock of pigeons takes flight.
>Coleo takes a deep breath and slowly backs herself down the shelving. She tries to remind herself that she is, in fact, not in a kid's murder mystery. Not like those constables. Though she almost was.
>The thought sends a creeping sensation up her spine.
>"Tea." She intones to herself, trying to break up the quiet. "Some tea would calm me right down." And then she's off in the direction of the kitchen.
>The tightness relaxes in her chest as she moves out of the unusually cramped-feeling aisle into the long hall down the front of the 4th floor, the great open air view all the way down the first floor bathed in golden red sunlight.
>Then she finally turns to go down the nearest of the two central stair cases and the world closes right back in.
>Something minor on the third floor creeks as she passes by down the stairs.
>Coleo picks up the pace a little. A little more than a little, really.
>By the time she's hit the bottom of the stairwell she's hit a fairly healthy jog
>The light pittering of many many legs fills up the stairwell, echoing up and down until the space is stuffed.
>As she passes the second floor a trio of harsher creaks, right on top of each other, cut through the rising tide of light steps, and just feet away from the doorway to the stairwell by the sound of it.
>Coleo picks up the pace even more. If she doesn't they're going to get her.
>>
>>70079109
>She bursts onto the bottom floor, her many legs skittering for purchase on the stone tiles as she tries to rein in her momentum. She whips her head this way and that to try and get a good view of her pursuer.
>Nothing comes down after the speeding cork once the fizzing echo of her many many steps fades away.
>A breath. Then another.
>Still nothing.
>And so she stands, alone but for whoever may be watching her from above, or from outside, or from a aisle on the ground floor.
>She blinks once. "Tea. Tea, tea, tea," Coleo repeats to herself like a mantra. Heavens above, she needs to calm down. 'I'm being so stupid.' she admonishes herself silently as she turns back in the direction of the kitchen.
>She steams along the bottom of the valley of great library until she reaches the gates of warm leafy salvation.
>As her hand touches the doorknob the sound of metal sliding along the length of a surface comes to her ears from the other side.
>She freezes, hand on the doorknob. Slowly, as quietly as possible, she lets go of the knob and lowers herself to look through the keyhole, into the kitchen.
>The narrow cone of view reveals nothing out of the ordinary.
>Blink.
>Then another.
>There's a shuffling just outside her cone of view, near the counters.
>She draws back from the door and presses her ear up against the wood. 'I'm being stupid. It's probably just the third girl Papa. I'm being stupid.' But she listens anyway.
>There is a little scrape, then the sound of little bits working over each other. Teeth against cheek in a dry mouth?
>She recoils from the door. She's being stupid. It's Papa with the knife. That's it. That's all. He's just making dinner.
>Her breathing is rapid. "I need to go to bed," She whispers to no one. "I need to go to sleep, and I'll wake up tomorrow and everything will be fine. I just need to go to bed." She turns and skitters away, on the long way around the kitchen to her bedroom.
>>
>>70079132
>The shadows chase her as she scampers, darting through the corners of her eyes and playing just at the edge of her vision. She can hear someone behind her. Someone's chasing her.
>'No one's chasing you.' She reminds herself. 'It's just the echo.'
>She flies through her bedroom door anyway, slamming it shut behind her. She tears through her room like a twister, ripping her blanket off and throwing it up over her window. Then she rips free the top sheet and whirls to stuff it into the underside of the doorframe and up the sides where she can get it to stay.
>She drapes the pillowcase over the doorknob to cover the keyhole, and then finally curls herself into a puck on the hinge side of the door, clutching her pillow tight as she tries to stop hyperventilating.
>'Calm down. Just calm down. You're safe here. There's no danger here...'
>Coleo hyperventilates on the floor of her cell in peace for a small time, then something scratches at the door. Then again, a little more insistently, then it pours on.
>scratch scratch scratch-scratch-scratch-scratch
>Coleo cowers deeper into her corner as the scratching begins to get louder and louder.
>SCRATCH-SCRATCH-SCRATCH-SCRATCH-SCRATCH-SCRATCH-SCRATCH
>Then it stops.
>...
>An indignent little chirp comes from the other side.
>Her eyes go wide with mortification at the sound of Jiminy's chirp.
>Quickly, she snakes around, a hand wrapping around the doorknob, and cracks the door just a little so she can peak through into the hallway.
>Jiminy's head quirks slightly in befuddlement as he peers at Coleo through the doorway.
>A pair of hands dart out through the gap, snatching Jiminy out of the hallway and deep into one of Coleo's signature many-armed hugs. She slams the door shut again and curls back up, on her actual mattress this time, and cradles Jiminy against her, crying at her own stupidity.
>"I'm sorry Jiminy. I'm- I was scared. I thought- I thought you were-" She hiccups.
>>
>>70079142
>Jiminy snuggles up against Coleo and presses her with his legs in a somewhat soothing rythm. After a few cycles of this her starts to clean her neck and shoulder, and climbs up till he's nuzzling the side of her cheek with his mouthparts, then lays down. air gently moving in and out of his spiracles.
>Coleo nuzzles him back as she settles down onto the bed and finally lays her head onto her pillow. She drifts off to sleep, mind soothed by the calming rhythm of Jiminy's breath.
~~~~~~
>Coleo's sleep is fitful that night.
>She dreams
>She's alone, in a decadent banquet hall, at the head of a gigantic dining table.
>It is repleat with drinks, wine, and meats of all sorts; decadent beyond what she thought she could imagine.
>She takes a bite of the meat on her plate; what looks like a pork steak, cooked to perfection
>It's sweet. It's delicious.
>She continues eating.
>The steak is devoured, and then the next dish, and the next.
>It's all too delicious.
>Eventually Coleo is eating so quickly that there's no time to wait for the next plate; she throws herself onto the table
>She begins to devour entire dishes whole
>The nature of the food begins to change
>The cuts are larger, the bones are left in more often
>She devours those, too. Cracks them open in between her mandibles and sucks out the marrow.
>The pieces have become longer now, some of them have the skin left on.
>Wonderfully crispy, savory.
>Suddenly she is faced with an arm. A human arm. Grilled, and brined in molasses and cider vinegar.
>It's more delicious than the rest.
>The dream continues for some time this way; the human parts become more and more common, more and more raw.
>A leg, an arm, a heart, a liver. So many parts cooked so many ways! And they're all delicious!
>At the end of the table, having devoured all else, Coleo finds a head. The braised head of William Windsor.
>She picks at it for a moment, gingerly. She's not sure what to do with it.
>>
>>70079198
>One of her hands, unbidden, strips a length of flesh from the cheek and places it on her tongue.
>Succulent, moist, tender. Delicious.
>There's a horrendously loud crunch as Coleo's mandibles bite down and crush Windsor's skull.
>Coleo wakes up in her bed, chest heaving. She's crying.
>It's still dark out.
>She can remember the taste of the Johnnygirl's guts on her tongue.
>She lays there, staring up at the ceiling.
>That can't happen.
>That can't ever happen.
~~~~~~

Some of it is. It’s mostly full of errata that've already been incorporated.
>>

How would that work, mechanically? Use the combat system to represent cooking (i.e. you use your hand part to stir a pot, and damage represents you stirring so hard your hand flew off from its socket)? An all-Gothic party out to kill different kinds of undead to cook?

>>
>>70063243
Definitely bad translation, Jap games don’t really do that ‘lose a char and make a new one’. Rather, Nech ends the storyline about a group of sisters and has all players start with new Dolls. The only way to stop being able to play your Doll is if everybody loses.
>>
>>70072596
>>70079241

Thanks for the multiple storytimes.
Warms my steam driven heart.

>>70059635
How long have you been involved with Nechronica dude?
>>
>>70080869
I think you can also lose your character if they're annihilated when your party members retreat from combat, though I would be surprised if most DMs didnt just let you take a piece of your sister to try and put her back together later.
>>
>>70080869
Actually Jap games do the opposite. In Nechronica, if you lose your doll and the other players flee, you are supposed to make a new doll from scratch and all you have to catch up is the unspent favor you had.

Players earn favor, not their characters, so someone who loses a character will often be behind the rest of the party until those characters are left to die too. Think of it like most older RPGs.
>>
>>70082810
Derail the plot to find someone who can put your sister back together again?

It’s more likely than you think.
>>

In one campaign that's on hiatus, it took place in something that can easily be described as dreamworld with its own logic.

>How would you run a bronze age campaign?

What aspect of Bronze Age Comics are you trying to build your campaigns around?
>>
>>70088832
No I mean a Nechronica campaign set in the Bronze Age. The gods are Necromancers and the dolls are flesh golems and the world got fucked up by hubris
>>
>>70088909
That sounds cool!

I haven’t read up on Egyptian mythology but Greek Mythology is very strange in sometimes arbitrary seeming ways.

I could totally see adapting Classic Greek myths about Bronze Age Mycenaean Greece to Nechronica.

Imagine being the furies sent to torment Prince Orestes in the Oresteia.

Sent to do your god given duty when Apollo jumps into things before you can finish our job, your also dealing with a very upset customer/ghost, and when you finally Finally catch the fucker you are meant to deliver someone’s punishment to, Athena drops in and wants to make you part of her latest pet project.

Can you navigate this minefield of conflicting interests and fickle gods?
Will you even be the same by the end? Assuming you live and remain nominally sane.

Just another day at the office.

I would make the dolls supernatural servants of a god. Something more than mundane and with strange properties compared to mortals.

In a more literal sense advancements would be a manifestation of the favor of their god.

Though what their god finds worthy may be pretty broad and inconsistent.

I wonder if the campaign would drift toward valuing mortal affairs or supernatural ones. That would depend on what kind of players I got.

You lads are swell and I want you to know that.

That said, it does well to remember that the Coleo campaign kicked off with Melico and Imp both getting carted. Personally, my money is on Nergigante.

As for the Lily fight in the library section; she wasn't an impossible fight. It was just that we came out of it almost (physically) unscathed because she could not roll well to save her life. Something that's followed her into the following sessions long enough to become something of a running gag. Her luck can really be quite sad.

GM in one game recently just didn't bother actually playing out a fight because in his words "I don't think I could actually kill you guys."

As for "why impossible?" Probably to make them run or some such.

I want to do a short game where Santa is a legendary figure.

A nechromancer who gives instead of takes.

They say he was sealed beneath the earth by other nechromancers jealous of his phenomenal power.

They say some of his followers still wander the earth, spreading the word of Santa.

It’s unclear if he is real or not.

However this group of dolls, for various reasons, is going to find and free Santa or die trying.

Thread archived to SUP/tg/ just look on the front page of the archive or search the tags Nechronica or Storytime to find it if you are a rebellious edgelord who never goes in the front door.
