Rebirth Edition

Urban Unease is an old tg setting based in an apartment complex that isn't normal but isn't really evil. Strange neighbors, ghosts that are usually somewhat well-meaning, rooms and floors only existing on certain days, Russian speaking Soviet mice, you name it.

We've had threads set in an apartment complex, a subway, and a mall. What about a small but dense town or an office building?
>>
>the rinky dink law firm on floor seven never has much business. maybe it's due to that awful sulfur smell.

>The parking garage attendant has been here longer than anyone remembers. Oddly enough, he never seems to take a break or even sleep.

>No one knows the owner of the complex, but occasionally a massive black Hummer can be seen occupying his parking spot. While the windows are tinted, there always seems to be weird noises coming from the cab.
>>
every monday is trash day, every tuesdays is recyclables. technically we have wednesdays for yard compostables but who the hell has any space for that shit in a place as cramped as this? apparently someone on the third floor does. every wednesday, when i go to work, there's a tall bag of leaves, filled right up to the brim. gone by the time I get back. I bumped into it once by accident, I was pretty hungover. it shoved me back.
>>
Old buildings like this are quite weird sometimes. The rusty pipes make all kind of strange noises, you just have to hold your ears up to the wall and listen. Ocasionally it almost sounds like distant screams.
>>
The noises from the apartment upstairs are driving you crazy. Raised voices. Furniture being moved. Heavy footfalls. A dog barking.

The kicker? You're on the top floor of the building, and it has a flat roof.

At the end of every corridor there's a set of stairs on the left and another corridor on the right. Keep following the corridors on the right and you can find room numbers reaching into the thousands, however any set of stairs will bring you to the first room on the next floor.

>From your window you can see into the overgrown balcony of your neighbour. He's a gardener but he can't be doing a very good job - there are human teeth growing out of his potted plants.

I really like the tone of this, but what is the point of this setting? Is it just a fun excercise in mundane weirdness or something possible to play in? Because I'm not sure what player characters would do in Urban Unease though I do like the idea of a kind of casual roleplay as normal people rather than doing some kind of epic adventure like so many other games.

Maybe the players wouldn't be normal people and instead have to define their particular brand of weirdness and what kind of deal is. I could see the players being a bunch of odd individuals doing something like running a kind of Homeowner's Association for the apartment.

"Ah crap. Looks like we have to inform Mr. Schmidt about yet another 'Unearthly Noises' complaint."
"Do we really want to deal with him first? We also have to check on room 337b. They didn't slide their rent cheque under their door this month."
"Alright, we'll do that first. I'll get the Morse code book."
>>
There's a lot of stray animals running through the floors between each apartment. Sometimes they follow you around from a distance but mostly they just sit infront of your door silently watching for hours or even days on end without moving. At night you can hear them claw on the wood.
>>
>>69066933
Same thing here. I love these threads, but i dont know how to put them in a game, other than to put some "weirdness" tone to the setting.
The problem is that players will expect that everything abnormal you put in the game, has a why, and is related to the adventure. They will be drawed to this happenings, for nothing, wasting time.
As it has been said, you must compare this happenings to the average level of weirdness in the setting. In a horror game, its expected that all weirdness events are more or less related. In fantasy urban setting, this happenings would happen often, but by the increased weird ness level of the setting, they wouldnt be unease at all
>>
>>69067361
You could say the same about the Night Shift threads. But then, I think it's fun to shoot the breeze with other anon, kick ideas around to build some worlds. Gets the old creative juices flowing.

I dunno if you could run a game based on these kind of things, but they'd be fun colour or plot hooks to drop into Conspiracy X or Delta Green, Men in Black (anyone remember that WEG gem), a World of Darkness campaign, Kids on Bikes or Tales from the Loop, or practically anything else with an urban fantasy/horror component.
>>
>>69067361
Yeah you'd need the right group of players who would enjoy the setting's tone without wanting to ruin it. I could see curious players wanting to kick down every door the second you hint at there being mysterious things behind it.

A fun solution and a way to play off player paranoia could be to add weird but mundane things into the setting. "If you're on floor 52 make sure you wear a cross in case the old lady that lives there sees you." Now they think she's a monster when really the cross is just so she doesn't throw a bible at you and rant for 5 minutes about how you're a heathen going straight to hell.

Still it's all very Vault Tec, so I doubt I could get away with it.

I was just thinking is might be fun for some rules-light to even freeform RP stuff.

Actually contemplating (informally) trying my hand at National Writer's Month challenges starting next week and this makes me wonder about a sort of story within such a setting. Off-the-cuff premise would probably be a college freshman moving into an Urban Unease apartment building of sorts and dealing with all the weirdness, maybe with a roommate to serve as a mild exposition. (my other idea is a fantasy story where a dragon decides to 'hire' a thief girl to jack shit from his rivals and generally go where a 'obviously a dragon' cannot)

You can always do a variation, especially since what was just described is basically the latest arc from John Carpenter's Tales of Science Fiction.

Here's a bomb shelter guarded for forty years by a now 87-year old Chinese. Dude had no idea that the military had forgotten all about him and he just kept on protecting the place. So basically do a combination "trapped in a fallout shelter" story with a basic "monster" stalking it like Jason or Michael Myers only it turns out to just be a fuck old security guard who wasn't even getting a paycheck anymore.

Could be anticlimactic or just embarrassing for the party, but I personally see no reason why you can't play the "villain" as a madlad survivalist. Most of the actual encounters are just traps he's set on the grounds. Standard Hills Have Eyes or Wrong Turn crap like he disables the cars/tire puncture traps because he won't let you escape with knowledge that the place exists and compromise integral national security (seriously, where's that fucking paycheck? It's been thirty years!) Maybe guard dogs or if you're feeling particularly edgy he's captured graffiti teens and when they've been suitably driven insane uses them as guard dogs.

The thing about the Chinese dude is he wasn't living at the shelter. Rather impractical and he'd have had to be, presumably, using the supplies he was guarding. Instead he had a normal life and shelterman life. Funny thing is the Commies not only forgot about him but also that the damn shelter existed, the latter being another nice detail. It's not the worst plot hook that the players stumble on things so top secret that nobody remembers it even existed in the first place. There's no official records and anyone who might have personally remembered has long since died.

Small shelters, not very deep in the ground, likely to be exposed when digging out new basements or swimming pools... Yeah, not a good idea since it likely won't pass suspension of disbelief. However there have been abandoned mines converted to bomb shelters:

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/former-mines-find-modern-glory-180967649/

This, I think, would be far more believable when coupled with the notion that records can be misplaced and the even the government can forget what they spent millions building. Plenty of space for them, enough stock for the town for many years. Have the shelter dwellers succumb to intense paranoia over the years, breeding a strong us vs not-us mentality. Societal devolution but retain elements of the 50s like strong religious aspect even if you probably wouldn't recognize what they now think of as God. Several generations slowly becoming crippled and deformed from improper nutrition and increasingly rundown environment. Extreme intolerance of bright lights. They occasionally leave the shelter at night to hunt wild animals or even venture into the newly repopulated areas to steal food. To them healthy, cheerful people with modern technology are twisted abominations of nuclear war/invading foreign devils due to a rampant, near religious belief that the war (which never happened) will leave only the unclean and ungodly alive on the surface and an intense fear of all outsiders.

There's a few potential plot hooks I can think of off the top of my head.

You can have a corporation move in wanting to reopen the mine to exploit any mineral wealth. Different elements considered valuable enough to dig for in our modern age. The shelter dwellers see this as an invasion, kill the survey crews and string up the corpses around the upper level of the mines as a warning. Maybe toss in some amateur cave explorers and/or no good punk kids.

Or you could just go full 80s and have evil corporations hiding toxic waste in the old mine that mutates the people living there, contaminating their water supply and turning them in to the mutants. There's some tasty irony in having their shelter meant to protect them from radiation leading to their toxic damnation.

My favorite, and not incompatible with the other two, is mutant reconquista. They become aware that outsiders have moved onto their land and begin making forays into the town to reclaim it. Several generations spent underground have left their eyes weak and vulnerable to sunlight so they hunt at night. Break into otherwise peaceful homes, slaughter the families inside, and then they move into the basements and cellars. One by one, without anyone noticing, houses are being converted into the twisted dens for psychotic mole people while the bodies of the previous inhabitants rot on the upper floors.
>>
>>69071304
As a construction worker, you should know why that part is dumb

Alternately here's a 70s era shelter that's designed to look like the outdoors, indoors.

>>
>>69071379
Vault-Tec are more "hilarious" amoral social experiments meant to serve as useful data to the REAL people intended to survive the war (outside of the control vaults), the Enclave. Mutants are rarely the end goal of their experiments, it's just that most vaults have catastrophically failed leading to total population collapse, broken down seals/reactors, or been breached by outside aggressors. That radiation turns people into ghouls and the danger from fallout somehow just persists in their environment for hundreds of years is a setting specific factor.

>>
>>69071640
Well the point is there is so much more that could be done with the setting. Of having a few generations separated from the normal world.

We never really got actual cults for example.
It was always just contamination of one sort or another.
Something broke down, or the experiment itself was designed to contaminate people, or, or, or.

Are you talking about Fallout or what anon posted because none of his stuff was because of an experiment. It was just a lot of people living in a confined space for long past the time they'd reasonably need to in order to survive fallout because they were too scared to leave. Only one example used toxic waste, which was specifically called out. The others were just an otherwise normal, though fearful, community that naturally decays along with their shelter.

You'd be better off bitching about radical social darwinism leading to a cliched broken down society with inverted morals. Probably cannibals or some shit.

I mean most of this had less to do with Fallout minus the usage of a shelter than it did with shit like The Hills have Eyes.
>>
>>69071735
In fallout it's much more direct.
It's the "people go to shelter to be sheltered from the horrors of man, but then it turns out horrors of man were externally introduced to the shelter and they can't leave"

This is the same stuff all the time. The bad stuff doesn't come from the people in the shelters, the bad stuff doesn't arise from circumstance, it's always just deliberately psychopathic shit designed to harm the inhabitants when they have no escape.

Very bland and formulaic.

Sure have irony in there, by all means, but not along the same formula every time.
"people go to shelter to be sheltered from the horrors of man, but then it turns out horrors of man were externally introduced to the shelter and they can't leave"

In Fallout?
Also i was talking about bunkers and shelters.

There's so much that could go wrong.

Even in the actual examples any radiation wasn't form the war, because the point is that THERE WAS NO WAR, and the people never needed to be down there in the first place. Only in one suggestion corporations later (presumably illegally) dumped waste in what they thought was an abandoned mine.

But like was already posted above, you don't like it, you don't have to play it, so don't worry. Nobody is going to lock you in a fallout shelter and made you play any of these scenarios.

Okay, so you got triggered by the notion of a fallout shelter failing. For whatever it's worth most shelters weren't really intended to do much, especially in major cities, they were just for peace of mind in order to keep populations from panicking via false sense of security. Duck and Cover was never going to safe your turtle ass.
>>
>>69072086
It actually would have helped a lot, because
a) you wouldn't actually have been directly exposed to the infrared radiation possibly igniting your clothes
b) it would've saved you from shattering windows and falling debris, because of the hurricane force winds
c) it would have provided better survival chances in the event the building collapsed because of the seismic shock.

Sure it wouldn't have done *much* and it only would have worked a certain distance from the explosion, but if you were much further, there's literally not much you personally could have done, the other stuff would have been the governments duty to supply rations and evacuate, and if you were much closer nothing you do would've saved you anyway.

Jesus fuck, Mansley, no, you won't survive a direct nuclear strike on your city just by filing into the public shelter. You will, however, handily leave yourself entombed so the people who pick over the bones of civilization won't have to deal with your stinking, bloated corpse.

This is why many plans during the Cold War revolved around the notion of "decentralization" or "dispersement". the spread of populations and business infrastructure away from major cities so that it would be much harder for the enemy to take out the United States in a relatively few number of strikes. Fortunately as the threat of the Cold War becoming a Hot War never fully materialized outside of a few flareup issues where there wasn't time to enact such plans anyway, this never happened and urbanization continued as the way of the future.
>>
>>69072272
>urbanization as the way of the future
wat
Everyone today is also about decentralization.
Also, no one was talking about a *direct* nuclear strike.
All of those were built to survive indirect strikes, counting on there not being enough bombs to hit every place where such shelters were.
There were also some shelters explicitly designed to withstand direct nuclear blasts, and as such only became obsolete with advanced bunker buster missile technology.

>>69072169
Yes, my dude that's exactly what i was being assblasted about as you so eloquently put it.

I have absolutely no idea btw what gave you the impression that i was mad in any way shape or form.
I've just had enough of that particular trope.

It's been done and redone and redone.
Fallout is just the most recent and most egregious example.

Anyway as for other things that could happen with shelters other than "something bad is put into them":
-The inhabitants set up a new social order which diverges more and more from normalcy all on their own based on random fluctuations that can have a huge impact with so few people making up the entirety of society. This alone has a billion ways to go, from seemingly normal people who find it disgusting to eat anything but human meat, over other cultist behavior, over recreations of old historic regimes and societies with caesars, kings, parliaments, bureaucracies, thocracies, over plain insane anarchy, over a utopic society that competely shuns the rest of the world, up to weird human genetic engineering or selective breeding stuff to support the new society.
Any encounter with such a society would be incredibly disturbing and not just "monsters in the sewers".
-The inhabitants could have unearthed stuff that was not known to normal people as they dig deeper down, trying to expand their living space. Ancient aliens, eldrich shit, all precisely because the shelter they had was not enough for them. They delved too greedily and too deep....

Maybe he's confused by the way a lot of industries have been moved offshore, however that's not really decentralization, that's merely centralizing your industry in cheaper areas to exploit which in turn has lead to different impacts via economic warfare, i.e. China now having US corps by the balls so they can demand censorship of things they don't like, from Hollywood movies having to conform to China's dislike of magic, ghosts, black people, and Japan to vidya bans over Hong Kong protests.

The targetting was not accurate enough during the cold war to be able to utilize nukes tactically and surgically, therefore the possibility persisted that parts of the city would be left intact.
There's also still the fact that most of the problem comes from the airblast.
The Tsar bomba shattered windows and destroyed weaker houses hundreds of kilometers from the impact site, and the thermal radiation was perceptible from like 300km
No smoke or fumes or radiation got that far, but you would've had a lot of wounded if that was a populated area.
Therefore duck and cover and simple shelters would've been effective.

Wow.
Every part of what you said above was false.

China is centralizing stuff because it lives in a 50 year old planned economy dream.
Everywhere else the modern thing is to decentralize. Local small scale water reclamation, cloud computing, local servers, locally sourced supply chains, renewable energy sources, and in fact economic diversification in order to take that leverage out of china's hands.

-The inhabitants had to deal with problems brought about not from outside problems but from inside sources. A single psychopath in a limited community with no escape can do much harm as can a single broken component if you have no spare parts. (fallout1)
-The inhabitants could hold weird beliefs about the overworld, since they had no contact with it, or even completely forget that they are in a shelter not a generational starship or something like that.
-The inhabitants could not have retreated into their own escapist realities be that by VR, telepathy, or just creating endless amounts of books and VR.
-The inhabitants could be normal but with a really weird culture, like no clothes, or plastic clothes because they couldn't grow cotton, and had no spares. Generally anything that is just a cultural weirdness resulting from resource shortage.
-The inhabitants could literally just fall victim to the human psychology, and develop cabin fever, depression, or hallucinations about the ghosts of those buried in the ground around them, and otherwise be completely fine.

I typically use these threads for inspiration. Fun pictures and stories that I'm under no obligation to use as posted but can be adapted for whatever I see fit. I've had a lot of fun mined from these and similar threads. Plus I suppose the spooky season being upon us makes it feel extra fitting now.

There's something about these older architectural styles that make for such atmospheric games in abandoned or otherwise spooky locales. They can look perfectly usable but just the sight of them seems to brood over bygone days.

The notion of underground tunnels spread under a town and families being taken out one by one reminds me of Invaders from Mars (1986 remake). Tobe Hooper. Dan O'Bannon. Stan Winston on effects. What's not to love? Plus humanity goes full /k/ommando on the aliens.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjyXQrqCpss

Personally I feel like Urban Undead mostly involves spooks, kooks, and dimensional shenanigans, but a good old fashioned alien invasion doesn't get enough love. I've never seen the original 1953 version of Invaders from Mars but I've been meaning to. Hell, since this thread reminded me and I just found the whole movie on Youtube, why not? Tis the season. I think I'll watch this, then the original Night of the Living Dead, and round it out with The Crazies.

OP here, I made the thread last night and this is the first time checking it. I was there for the originals, and hopefully some of you anons were too. If you faggots really think that post apocalyptic bunkers are fucking Urban Unease please neck yourself.

The entire fucking appeal is this middle of the road, not overtly haunted but definitely not normal, every day structure. God how is that so fucking hard to understand? All of you Fallout/Vault Tech faggots please go back to /v/. It's one thing for someone to get assblasted over a thread going in a different direction, such as you guys building for a police station instead of the suggested office complex, but you're literally taking a massive steaming shit on a fun comfy setting. If you want to brainstorm cool bunker ideas, please for the love of God go make the one millionth Fallout thread. Goddamnit I hate nu tg so fucking much

I've been following Urban Unease since the beginning, and frankly it's whatever you want, regardless of what the OP may ask for. The subway one in particular was a blast to participate in and it had everything from hidden labs, secret government bunkers (oh snap!), and even abandoned churches. In this case your vague "small but dense town" didn't help. You really would have been better off just leaving it at office buildings if that's what you really wanted because, news flash, police stations, sometimes armories, and sure even fallout shelters are all small town shit. You can still find buildings that have the old fallout signs up long after people have stopped caring about global thermonuclear warfare. Of course they're rare because the meddling kids do love to pry that shit off and hang it in their rooms. You only have yourself to blame for this because based on your shit OP it's still very much on-topic.

Meanwhile responding to your own thread with nothing but whinging while failing to actually contribute meaningfully and steer it back in a direction you wanted, well, your kind are a large part of the problem with /tg/, whether back in the good ol' days or nu-/tg/.

Maybe he felt bitching would help course correct, though a constructive example would have been more on point. And now we've got that guy who responds to every post in the thread with his personal approval or disapproval, as if we should care about his opinion. Sucks that an Urban Unease thread is this terrible right before Halloween.

Office buildings are pretty fucking lame. Not really sure what to do with it. The car park would be more intimidating but then they are even when the place isn't abandoned/haunted. What can you do with it?

>Oh shit, look at this connection between the Left Twix and Right Twix regional management office buildings! This proves the conspiracy they're actually part of the same company is true!

>Fuck, it's 5 o'clock on a Friday but all the office doors are locked! Noooo, I can't spend the weekend at work! The horror!

>Heard around the water cooler: "You know that camel that roams the office building declaring it's hump day? Well it's not because it's Wednesday, he's actually going to sodomize you later. Heads up."
>>
>>69074039
dude the superiority here is off the charts. Would you not agree that there are dozens upon dozens of apocalyptic based settings, both tg grown and professionally made? so why, pray tell, do we need to do this shit here in an actually interesting and fairly specific setting? I don't give two fucks about what topics are used. Fire stations, airports, gay bars, the beautiful Japanese city of Kyoto, if you present me with a well done, interesting, on flavor idea I'll be pleased as punch. Show me a well made bunker then I'd be more than happy to eat my hat.

Once again, slowly and directly to make it easier to grasp, Urban Unease is entirely about subtle strange happenings. In my opinion, in contained areas with a lot of different individuals populating them but that's more vague I'll admit. What about the entire inversion of a society's "normal" via a nuclear apocalypse is subtle or strange? What about people having an entirely self contained warped society within a bunker is subtle or strange? Let alone the idea of creativity, what about those things makes you go "yeah that's never been done before!!!!"?

As for your last point, it's by no means "my thread". It's a thread on a setting I like I happened to post. Post whatever you'd like, it's no skin off my sack, but please save the keyboard warrior smugness for your Reddit account friend. If you'd like to contribute yourself, maybe try and stay within some realm of resembling the original idea.

>Within the basement storage room is an old shelf titled "Terminated" holding plain brown boxes. Opening them reveals only salt linings on all sides.
>A handful of workers seem to come and go without ever actually driving a vehicle to work, or exiting and entering the building. They are the most jovial and talkative workers in their offices.
>The third floor men's room has a dark and specific poem regarding the copy room's secret. The ending has been scratched out and rewritten so often it's no longer legible
>>
>>69074213
Possibly finding out the company you're a low level office worker for isn't really what you think it is. Like you're in a call room robo-dialing random people offering them "Spiritual Fulfillment" packages, like shitty vacations that turn out to be even shittier business opportunity seminars, only to realize later that you're actually just a middle man in a human soul trafficking scheme. Hell has outsourced temptation to the mortal realm and you've been helping send people into eternal damnation. But hey, at least you got dental.

>>69074225
I agree your superiority complex is pretty bad, and from what I can tell extremely unwarranted. Probably why a moment ago you were declaring, "OP here," and bitching about your thread being ruined by things you personally don't want to see, now you're admitting this isn't really your thread. That's nice, I guess?

Urban Unease never pretends to be a setting. People don't often bother to build off of other ideas posted in order to create a coherent scenario or location, they just post ideas they like. Often they just post pictures. I don't think you really know about Urban Unease threads any more than you do what your original idea even was. Hell, it's clear you don't know what very thing you're complaining about even entailed. There was never any actual nuclear apocalypse. This was never a post-apocalyptic derailment, except possibly in your own mind.

>shuts down after four months due to a number of unexplained employee deaths

>no trace of the murderer or murder weapon was ever found
>community revitalization turns into desperate economic downward spiral
>fuck it, time to invade the rich bitch office castle and tear out the copper wiring because a man's gotta feed his family
>suddenly chased by the ghost of an old miner wielding a pickax
>turns out the ghost was pissed about people ripping the copper out of his mine after he died and his spirit latched onto the office building since it has the largest concentration of his copper
>now seeking vengeance especially on any he perceives trying to steal his precious copper

Fuck you guys, this is now a Scooby Doo murder mystery thread.
>>
>>69074613
The culprit is really company CEO Evul Mann. His brand new modern office building suffered from massive construction delays and cost overruns, leaving him in debt far greater than the worth of his present corporate holdings. His best option to recover his fortunes was therefore to destroy his own company. The police failed to discover that each of the murdered employees had massive life insurance policies naming the sole beneficiaries as various dummy charities he secretly owns. Now with the building shut down he can sneak back in and burn it, gaining himself another huge insurance windfall, but first he plans to rip out the valuable copper himself, I mean why let it go to waste?, plus maybe pick himself up one of them sweet ass red staplers he's heard so much about. Naturally while ripping up the walls he has to dress as an old prospector and cover himself in spooky glowing paint in order to scare away any other enterprising copper thieves. It's all so obvious!

Urban Unease got out of the apartment complex years ago. I don't think you could really call it a setting, more of a loose theme of various spooky stuff whose only connection is it's urban and has unease. Less round table story writing and more a chaotic brainstorming session (as only 4chan can give you). Little pretense about connecting the ideas, especially not much in the last several years. I personally think that's for the best. It's like sharing world building ideas without trying to actually build a world. If someone tried to take all of the various ideas, collate them, distill them into its own unified setting, we'd just wind up with something approaching SCP. That almost certainly wouldn't end well. Though odds are it'd be abandoned like just about everything else /tg/ has tried to do as a community.

I always treated these threads as more a resource guide or source of inspiration, and have gotten some good mileage out of them. I hope I've managed to give people as many useful ideas as I've taken. The funny thing about the complainers in this thread is that Urban Unease has really evolved over time and has even dabbled in post-apocalypse. Personally I don't want to go that far. I do like spooky ruins as much as the next person, but I like the idea of these blights within the community. You know? Everywhere else the city is alive, bustling, but you've stumbled on an urban cancer, something sinister and deadly nestled in the heart of an otherwise lively area. When absolutely everything is trashed it loses something that I at least value. I like the dichotomy, the sense that salvation is so close at hand but you're stuck in this mess. It gives you hope, but the hope is probably a lie.

Joking aside, some of my favorite photos of abandoned buildings are where nature reasserts itself. Especially when its in the middle of an industrial area. Like nature reclaiming its own from the works of man. I'm not sure how spooky this really is without getting into extremely hostile wildlife, like nature isn't just reclaiming but going to war. Maybe not pod people, per se. I've always liked the notion of, shit, I guess you'd call them nature golems? Not exactly elementals in the traditional have you tried not playing D&D sense. A Swamp Thing, if you will. Definitely Man Sized.

I think most of what's being centralized by the US is the supply chain, which however accurate is probably still stretching things when 99% of the product is produced overseas while the only things they do on the US is slap the components together into the case and stamp MADE IN THE USA on it. Still as they become more modernized and thus expensive to produce there they know places like the US will look to offshore again to cheaper countries. From what I've read they've been pretty smart about ensuring they continue to control a lot of the resources, especially a lot of rare earth metals, which will be essential to the cheap crap the US economy thrives on.

The funny thing is while this seems off topic it's definitely a source of a lot of urban unease. Real life can be so much more unsettling.

You were always warned against going to the south side of town. It was where "those" people lived. No one would ever be more specific than that, not at school, not at church, not even your parents. Those people were just different, somehow, and the sides never, ever mingled. But this was 2019. Things weren't like that anymore, or at least they shouldn't be. So you hop in your car and start driving.

At first everything seems normal. A few of the people walking along the sidewalk even stop and wave. The smiles are wide, inviting. You find the way their teeth flash in the sunlight unnerving though you can't place your finger on why. Then you see it. You weren't certain what you were expecting but the old armored vehicle certainly wasn't it. The poor thing is a rusted heap, the flanks adorned with bright, even cheerful graffiti. You begin to note other details about your surroundings. Damage to the buildings, badly repaired. Old signs of fires. This is no longer just a pleasant drive downtown, it's more like an old battlefield. The sun glints off small metal objects along the gutters. You can't be certain what they are but from somewhere in the back of your mind comes the suggestion these are bullet casings.

It's only then that you become aware of them again. The people; standing at windows, peeking over the top of a broken fence, staring from the shadows of a tree. All of them smiling at you in that same fashion. Like they're all sharing an inside joke at your expense.

You slip the car into drive and put your foot down on the gas. The engine sputters, then dies.

Those are just the friendly workers from Willy "Pete" Wonka's Big House of Whoop Ass, proud maker of the Biggus Dikkus line of armored fightin' vehicles (AFVs), and not to be confused with his brother Pete "Willy" Wonka's House of Whooping Big Ass, proud home of the Biggus Blackus Dickus all shemale chorus line and revue ("You won't know where to hang your hat!"). Unfortunately times are hard for the factory, you know, what with the wartime economy winding down. But just you wait, the world is always a few international incidents away from another glorious upturn! Then they'll be back on top, unlike you at House of Whooping Big Ass, you know what I'm sayin'!

Seriously, though, don't unlock your doors or roll down your windows. Keep smiling and waving back.

Some days, not often, the power will go out. It's a fact if you're poor enough to consider a cramped and dingy place like this a home. It's not a huge deal, for the most part the power comes back after a couple of hours, and you start taking up hobbies that don't necessarily require electricity. The neighbor likes to play the violin when the power goes out. They starts playing almost like clockwork, like they drop everything and pick up the thing once the lights flicker. I like to think they make it a game, because over the music I can swear I can hear soft laughing right through the walls. Reminds me when life wasn't so bad. When life was just about going to school and hanging out with friends. Maybe the next time I'll go knock and get in on the action.

>every tiny corner shop in town is manned by the same generic-looking ethnic bloke
>at first you thought you were just being casually racist thinking this, but it's literally the same guy
>like, if a stain appears on his shirt, you can go into a different shop and the owner will have the same new stain on their shirt
>and one time when someone punched him during a robbery every other store owner got a broken nose
>it's definitely the same person whatever shop you go in
>he's a pretty cool dude though, one time you forget your change and he called your name as you went past another shop so he could give it to you
>although you can't remember ever telling him your name
>and nobody ever heard from that dude who robbed him again

Every Thursday between 6pm and midnight the local urban wildlife will be wrong for that part of the world. For example, raccoons and rhesus monkeys can both be seen in one European urban unease area on this day. Apart from the odd bin that gets ransacked it's generally not an issue, even stuff that's usually a danger to humans leaves you alone. Just don't try to feed the bear who occasionally shows up, he's sensitive about his weight and might take it the wrong way.

>The town is small but the local library is probably more comprehensive than the Internet, even if it’s organization is a nightmare and not everything is on record
>You’ve found newspapers on microfilm from Colonial America, movie scripts for indie films, transcripts from the missing time of the Nixon recordings, Cuniform tablets, arcane texts, and ever-updating copies of Harry Potter (mostly changing the sexuality and ethnicities of the characters)
>to be honest, you’re not even sure if there’s a limit to the library, you were warned on your first day not to go too far into the back or too many floors down in the basement.

Apparently that's what happens when a man is caught in a Maybelline explosion? I dunno, maybe it's Maybelline, maybe it's not.

I was trying to think of a way to make this more horrifying but pretty much failed. Might as well have someone accidentally load up 4yog.com, decided to click on the "you turn into the girl below you" thread, and by the time he was done he was nothing but a mass of tentacles and gills. But then that might as well be cultistchan.com so fug that. I don't think there's a way to really gender bending that 4chan wouldn't stand up and salute. Even if you were /pol regular surrounded by BBC. Hell, probably ESPECIALLY if they were a /pol/ regular surrounded by BBC.

Honestly, apartment building shenanigans are dope. There's so many things there that could be mundane, could be weird, could be both. You ever wonder why the elevator always skips a floor? You can get to it fine with the stairs, though. Ever talked to the janitor? He looks weird, but ever since I gave him a beer and a smile, everything's been great in my flat, but the dick across me always has troubles. What's the point of the locked door in the basement? Nobody knows what's behind it, and it isn't utilities.

>Fire stations
Okay, I'll bite.

>One night you're chilling in the apartment, trying to teach capitalism to those fucking mice, when you smell smoke. Rushing to the window you see fire streaming out of a window several floors below you. You dial 911 as you make your way out of the building. Shortly after reaching the sidewalk you hear sirens. It would be fair to say the firetruck arrived in a flash, because the goddamn thing was on fucking fire. It parks along the curb and men leap out, seemingly oblivious to the condition of their truck. Working quickly they attach hoses to the back and aim them at the window with the flames flicking out into the night sky. Instead of shooting a stream of water the hose instead somehow sucks the fire out of the building and into the truck. Once the firemen appear content they've contained the blaze they remount their fiery vehicle and depart.

>Unable to contain your curiosity you hail a cab, ordering the driver to follow them. For some reason only you seem to find the condition of the firetruck unusual. The journey is short, only a few blocks, as your target pulls into an equally fiery station house. With the garage doors open you see the men again jump out of the vehicle, attach their hoses, and apparently add the fire they've collected to the flames already dancing about the station.

>You have no idea how the men, vehicle, and building are seemingly immune to the fire any more than you know why only you find the whole thing five alarming. Curiosity still unsated you order the cabby to follow some of the men who appear to be going off duty. After tailing them down several streets they eventually arrive at a local gay bar where they apparently had a very enjoyable evening. Apparently these men are flaming in more ways than one.

I even worked the gay bar in for you. I don't know if there's anything unusual about the place except that they charge an outrageous price for a salty Russian. The mice are probably to blame.

Sure you can ride, it but the same goes for a horse, and at least that one can't tear through your door and rip your ribcage open with a single bite.
Not to mention it can't accidentally flay you, when it jumps on you just because it's happy.

Anyone can ride a horse. a PEASANT can ride a horse. True nobility and chic rides a goddamn dogpalca. You just have to make certain you feed them promptly ever day or they will go after your flesh. Just an average workday in peaceful productive office of glorious workers paradise Mother Russia.
>>
Office buildings... That's a bit tricky, for some reason. Sure I can think of creepy shit that can happen in an office, but nothing that feels necessarily location specific. I want to give it a try, though.

>This is your first week at a temp job for a local owned business called SOULFÜL ETERNITY INC. It's decent pay for easy work. Mostly light record keeping, transcribing written orders into the computer system. You aren't even sure what the hell the company does since all you ever see are the forms which use office jargon and shorthand, like the HELFRE PKG 666-a2 or the TMPTRES 668/b. Not that you really care as long as the paychecks clears.

>The employees are a bit weird, or at least weirdly standoffish. You've managed to cajole a few into light banter at the water cooler but they seem as unaware of current sports as you are whatever politics they seem to enjoy talking about. You haven't even heard of these politicians and couldn't even begin to type out the convoluted names into a search engine. You think it's Welsh or something. Maybe these are second or third generation citizens still interested in the old country. Still you've hit the bar scene with them a couple of times and they're good folk, even buying you drinks. Plus there's that girl in the mail room who smiles at you whenever she passes your cubicle. She's cute in a girl next door sort of way, even if her eyes are a little far apart and she has those weird skin flaps on the sides of her neck. You've been thinking about asking her out but you don't know where she lives. In fact you don't know where any of your coworkers live. Even your bar buddies always return to the office afterward. That first time you thought one of them had forgotten something but it happened every night since.
>>
>>69103749
>Then came the day you forgot something and followed them back. The office felt so different, somewhat claustrophobic despite being so empty. Slight noises, like the rattle of the air conditioner or the room settling would set off an undue sense of panic. Splitting off from your fellows you head to your cubicle. Once done you head back towards the elevator. After a few steps you stop. As if obeying unspoken instructions you turn and head deeper into the office. Following the sound of voices you find the others in one of the filing rooms. They're standing in front of the big cabinets as if lined up for movie tickets. You're surprised to see your supervisor there as well, moving along the line like a drill sergeant performing inspection. She's a typical dragon lady sort, very stiff, extremely proper, and absolutely no nonsense. Always dressed in impeccable suits with her hair pulled up in a severe bun. Sexy if you're into that Mistress of Pain stuff.

>To your surprise she begins sliding out bottom drawers one after another. They extend far deeper than you'd expected and for some reason they're all empty. Your coworkers each move beside a drawer and then inexplicably lie down inside. Once fully in, arms folded over their chests, your supervisor slides each drawer back again. Filing each employee away. She then begins opening the middle drawers leaving only one shut on the end. The last three employees repeat the previous activity and again she seals them inside. As if in afterthought she pulls out the last drawer halfway. You'd been watching all this play out in dumbfounded silence, frozen on the spot until she suddenly turns and stares straight at you, or maybe through you. She smiles, the first time you've ever seen her do so.

>"Your work to date has been acceptable. If you are interested in becoming full-time I'm happy to say a position has opened." She slides the drawer out the rest of the way.

fwiw I don't mind fallout shelters in the setting. It's the kind of thing you'd find in run down urban areas where the buildings are left to sit condemned. Even if found in an anachronistic manner, that's actually more fitting. It shouldn't be there, or shouldn't be in good condition, but it is.

I'm probably biased. There were a few where I grew up. One church a few blocks over had fallout shelters signs on the back of the building. It was a pretty big place, three stories, since it was a combined with a school. It was still up in the '00s when they tore the place down and built a senior living center in its place. There was also a home shelter in my neighborhood where kids would play. Not very big and it didn't have power. We tried an extension cord once but you couldn't get a TV signal for shit. Get a ghetto blaster with some mix tapes and you had all the tunes you'd ever need. That, some flashlights, a stack of comics with some Playboys hidden near the bottom, and it was the best damn clubhouse ever. Of course we weren't allowed in it after dark or have the door shut. Some years later the owner declared it off limits due to being unsafe. It probably wasn't safe when we used it either.

Mutants are too much, though I don't think they should be forbidden in Urban Unease any more than clowns in the storm drains and ghoulies in the toilets. Degenerate paranoid survivalists isn't bad. It's like the urban equivalent of inbred hillbilly cannibal rapists. However I like to imagine that some undead old coot from the '50s is still acting out his role as civil defense warden and randomly blares the sirens at all hours, especially in the middle of the night. He just wants you all prepared, to keep you safe, dammit. In modern times people probably mistake it for a tornado siren.

I'm a bit of a sucker for smart zombies. It ups the stakes when the monsters are clever and can set traps or mislead you. Better hope they aren't up to date with their trivia.

For Urban Undead he's almost certainly not evil, just a well-intentioned annoyance. No luring people into shelters to eat their delicious brains (something worth noting about the Living Dead series since they created the whole brain-eating zombie bit).

>while going through some of your deceased father's belongings stored in the attic you come across an old scrapbook

>it's like your father didn't want to remember certain things
>you start to close the book when the article slips from the pages

You've completely misread this idea. It isn't that the location failed, it's that they never needed to go inside in the first place. They did and stayed far longer than would have been necessary even if there was a real war. It's not a "vault" it's a shelter. It's meant to be temporary, but they didn't leave. The place might be a mess due to the passage of time but that isn't the point. It's not the shelter being broken that is the problem, the problem is that the people are broken, were broken before they ever went into the shelter. I don't know if they're some cult obsessed with the End of Days or drunk on Cold War fear and paranoia, and it probably doesn't matter.

This isn't Fallout. This isn't even The Twilight Zone episode Shelter Skelter. This is more Blast from the Past, a 1999 romantic comedy staring Christopher Walken and Brendan Frasier before the latter suffered his just desserts. It's about a family so sure that war is inevitable they seal themselves away. After 35 years the now grown son leaves the small world he's known in the shelter and has to learn to function in the modern world (after briefly assuming urban decay in a 1997 ghetto was the result of a nuclear holocaust). He punches Nathon Fillion before finding true love with Alicia Silverstone.

Stop obsessing with the mutants because you're missing out on a lot of harmless fun you can have with the idea, including a primo opportunity for some ultra survivalist primitive throwback waifu action where she's literally a cave girl with no knowledge of the modern world. You can have fun teaching her how to eat using utensils, that the Soviet mice aren't for hunting, the wonders of hot water showers and soap, and later help her braid her hair, styling it with pink ribbons, such glorious things she's never known in her dark, underground world. A life eating cave rats may have left her super smol or maybe she's an amazonian out to find a mate and tame him with snu-snu.

Because let's be honest, as much world building as Urban Unease has gone through it was really always about the spooky waifus >>69070354

The problem is you can never put stuff down the drain because she never gets out of the tub! That's why we have to get old Barnacle Bob up from the nearby docks so he can throw a net over her. Haul her out long enough to at least clean up the waste. Use one of those tiny nets to scoop out her latest Flounder's corpse floating belly up. Make sure her infestation of Sebastians around her cloaca don't require the special shampoo again. All very medicinal, completely businesslike.

Is this the thread for repair requests? Up until about a week ago I had a girl in my bathroom mirror who watched me brush my teeth. Perfectly harmless. Then my cousin comes by for TWO HOURS and now when I brush my teeth it's some squatting gopnik on the edge of my shower and I keep finding empty vodka bottles.

The mirror shows you as you really are, inside, not as you physically are. You clearly want to be the little girl. That's perfectly natural for 4chan. Your cousin, however, is another matter and appears to have broken the mirror. Try unplugging your mirror and plugging it back in again. If this doesn't work then remove it from the wall, hold it over the toilet, turn it upside down, and shake until the image falls out. Be quick to flush or you might wind up with a mirror transference into reality, which is much harder to get rid of.

>>69120761
Clearly someone was trying to sing, and badly, while in the shower and had to flush their reflection. If it doesn't dissipate in a few hours call an old plumber and a young plumber. I suggest you look up the number for Blessed Movements who specialize in toilet related entities, but you could also try Jesus Pipes.

This probably isn't right for this thread, definitely the post-apocalyptic Urban Unease thread, but what the heck, it's almost Halloween.

NBC miniseries circa 1946 titled The Fifth Horseman dramatizing for radio listeners the dangers of the atomic age. Specifically episode 6, Doomsday, about soldiers in an observation post when the war with Nation X goes hot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLFexNoG7lk

And episode 7 Aftermath which details life in a government Dispersement Center, men relocated from the cities before the war who were put to work on civil projects. This is after the war as people try to pick up the pieces and carry own. Spoiler alert: life sucks, China inherits the Earth.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vga6ex59fY

Orson Welles also did a two part series in 1956 called Civil Defense. It's a tale of two cities, one that prepared for The Bomb and one that didn't. Spoiler alert: most of the cast doesn't make it.

I'm pretty sure they dumped the idea of decentralizing from the big cities due to the logistical issues and expense. Pretty much why China has the US over a barrel. Certain people act like if we put pressure on companies they'll move back to the US, but it took decades to get to our present oversees manufacturing. It'll take time and lots of money to move it in a hurry. There will be a period where companies aren't producing as they transition which will create a market shortage. Companies don't want this but then they also don't want to pay for any moves anyway. Just about the only way you could do it is a WWII style emergency act by the government to crank up wartime manufacturing in a hurry. I'm not sure that could be justified, and someone is still going to have to pay that bill.
>>
>>69126663
It feels like it transitioned more towards Urban Horror, especially in later threads. Once things spread to outside the apartment I think it was less personal. Posters weren't thinking of a tenant dealing with weird stuff, but just creating creepy urban locations. It became maybe a bit more generic but definitely leaning far heavier on the extreme side with straight horror.

>>69106933
I do love me some trioxin zombies. Smart (sliding scale) and virtually indestructible. Trying to destroy the brain does nothing. Cut them to pieces and the pieces keep coming after you. Burning them is about the worst thing you can do. In Urban Unease the girl next door is already some kind of undead but fuck it, here we go.

The Spinster. A zombie who is perhaps closer to a revenant though without the drive for vengeance against some pre-death wrong. Apparently she didn't read the fine print before signing her new lease agreement that stipulates occupation of her rooms for at least 100 years. She's a living corpse with a permanent deathly pallor and milky white eyes with extremely wide pupils. While she doesn't rot her body shows signs of past physical trauma and efforts to repair it, especially stitched back together in multiple places. Her age is difficult to pin down due to her physical condition. She isn't grotesque, despite being dead, and can appear quite young and even lovely, especially in certain light. Her demeanor, however, can seem either young or old depending on her mood or the time period she's discussing. The rooms on either side of her are almost always unoccupied due to the smell, which is something like a crypt combined with the antiseptic odor of a hospital and several cans of Febreze. She tends to wear extremely heavy perfume to mask her personal aroma.
>>
>>69130032
The Spinster is very intelligent, with a consummate knowledge of at least the mundane history of the apartment complex (which she consistently refers to as a hotel, dating her living period to at least the 1920s). She becomes confused when you mention the paranormal aspects the building but she's clearly encountered them, some of the more dangerous entities apparently responsible for at least some of the damage to her body.

Extremely personable she arrives at your door with the offer of homemade food, usually cookies and small cakes. The thought is nice, but it's hard to enjoy them when she mentions offhand that she's lost a nail or part of a finger and asks you to return it of you find it. Occasionally she will very timidly ask if you will help massage her limbs and shoulders as she suffers on-again off-again rigor mortis. She always apologizes for the scandalous nature of the request, blushing a deeper shade of gray.

She rarely entertains guests. The few times you've been to her apartment you've noted the multiple heavy locks found on either side of her door. She explains the outdoor locks are for her bad days. Her personal diet consists entirely of uncooked brains, specifically animal brains provided by a number of speciality butchers and even veterinary school suppliers. Hunger makes her, in her own words "unseemly," but it would be better described as increasingly feral. In a pinch she's had to rely on a less reputable body part black market found somewhere in the city. More than once you've had to slide an extremely filthy, foul smelling cooler through a small pet sized door built into her front entrance as she snarls and claws at the barrier from the other side. You've become quite adept at filling out her food orders online after she sheepishly admitted she has trouble understanding these "newfangled combination television typewriters."

This is good stuff!
Also, I will be 100% honest, I find the dividing line between urban unease and urban horror hard to pin down.
Is it just a matter of the difference between the threat being a looming one and actually being one that you have to deal with? The pretense of everything being ok vs shit actually going down?
When does the setting stop being unease and start being horror? I get where it would for a movie or book, but it's harder for just a general setting that doesn't have a real ongoing plot (beginning, middle, end).

It seems like a lot of Junj Ito's stuff is just unease until the plot kicks in, then it ramps up into full horror.
>>
Thread might be getting too Monster Girl General. Not everything has to be a waifu people will still waifu everything but at least that's self-inflicted. Some also seem to overlap a bit, though perhaps in complimentary ways. The nurse and apparition girl, for instance, could certainly mend this zombie girl when a finger - or arm - falls off. However you better make sure zombie girl is well fed before the fifth of the fifth month.

I'm genuinely surprised nobody has made some kind of apartment cat. Say, a black cat that just roams the halls, apparently completely ownerless. Sometimes it appears in your apartment despite you being sure it didn't come in with you. Sometimes you see its shadow slinking down the halls, the shape changing into a human on all fours who moves to a standing position. No matter how fast you turn you can never catch sight of the actual transformation, in fact there's just the cat sitting in the hall, staring back at you. There's a knowing look in those piercing yellow eyes as the tip of a black tail swishes side to side.
>>
>>69131582
As far as I can tell it's a general degree of overall comfiness. Sure there's some deadly stuff in the apartment and you can get lost, probably permanently, in the multi-level basement, but there's plenty of people and phenomena in the apartment that would help and even rescue you. It's dark, it's spooky, it's dangerous; but it's home.
>>
>>69131582
I would say the difference is that with horror, the strange stuff is either out to get you or actively dangerous. With unease the stuff is likely to pass you by without a care but can be passively dangerous.
It’s the difference between a forest being patrolled by a madman with a gun or a mountain lion. Both will kill you, but the former is more likely to do so.
>>
>>69131877
I don't know how up to date >>69070354 is for the apartment itself but a lot of the hostile stuff can be avoided if you know how it works. It's pretty recognizable stuff. Of course the rules sheet is another matter.

>>69070752
I do like the idea of survival shelters in the basement, about one per level. Maybe signs warning people to seek shelter if you're caught in the basement past sundown, only the arrows leading to the shelter and occasional clocks are only variably reliable. Also some apartments may have cleaning closest on different floors, this place has panic rooms. A television monitor outside the room can show you the interior under a sign that reads:

Do Not Enter
If Currently
Occupied By
Unknown Or
Hostile Entity

I would not be surprised if some of these shelters appear to have been abandoned for decades while others are in perfect condition but the equipment and supplies are from half a century ago. Sometimes you find the corpse of some unfortunate tenant. Not sure if it's creepier/more suspicious to find one in the cleaner shelters.

Every couple of years on a seemingly random day if you go to the top of the building at 7:42 PM you will find yourself standing on the roof on an extremely clear night. This occurs even if the weather outside your window is sunny or overcast. This event lasts until you step back onto the stairwell and shut the door bend you. Regardless of whether you were on the roof for only a few minutes or what you are certain has been days you will always discover that the time is 6:22 AM the very next day after you first stepped outside. While you are experiencing the event there will appear to be only complete darkness beyond the edge of the roof, the lack of light pollution leaving the sky filled with stars. None of these will correspond to known heavenly objects, nor do they form recognizable constellations. The view includes nebula and even what appear to be galaxies visible even to the naked eye, seen in impossibly stark clarity.

According to some a few of your neighbors the more you stare into the night sky the more details become apparent. It is said that if you stare long enough you will recognize a combination of astral phenomena that appear to form a face. Descriptions vary. It has been described as entirely alien or human or even a skull. To some it is demonic, yet others speak of it with reverence, as if it were the face of God. It is said that, very rarely, if you wait until you are certain the face is staring back, you can ask a single question and receive an answer. Depending on the nature of the question people are said to return either enormously content or possessed by an ever increasing mania. Regardless, no one has been able to put into words what they were told.
>>
>>69134397
Notification of when this will occur is found in the form of a badly printed newsletter which appears outside the door of every occupied apartment at precisely 6:22 AM on the day the event takes place. According to the header the name of the publication is Astri Deii, however the articles are in some unknown language. Some of the pictures appear to be crude astrological symbols. Each newsletter is folded and located within the fold is a small card with the hand printed message, "non fottografee".

According to Crazy Dan any attempts to record the event leads to the destruction of the equipment and the offender found lying on the roof the next morning, their eyes burned out. He goes into graphic details about how the cavities will smolder for days afterward. However it just so happens that there is a special lens filter on sale at his store which he assures you will protect against the reception of even the most harmful visual emissions. It does not, however, come with any written guarantee.
>>
>>69134415
>>69134397
Researching the name of the newsletter in the library reveals the first recorded appearance of this strange publication was in Italy circa 1622, in the form of damaged documents recovered from the burned remains of a chapel used by the Ordinee Divinitti. Founded at an unknown point by Luccio di Pazzio, this was a religious group of dubious repute. All members, including di Pazzio, were believed to have perished in the flames. However further instances of their curious language, believed to be a cryptographic code using symbols known only to his followers, are claimed to have continued appearing through the following years.

Little is known about the beliefs of the group, however there is an account which claimed a non-coded correspondence from di Pazzio spoke of a discovery of what he was calling the language of the universe, or the dialect of the divine. One through which a person could speak directly to God but only on certain holiest of holy days. There is conflicting data about the actual day in question, as the calendar on which it is based does not appear to be the Gregorian or even Julian, nor does it correspond to any other known calendar. This is discounted by more than one historian since no reliable source has claimed to have seen the actual letter or even a copy of it.

You are about to close the book when you notice that someone has scribbled a notation at the bottom of the page, almost hidden by the curvature where the two halves of the book meet. It says that the "holiest of days" is not a normal day but rather a leap day. Perhaps this explains why it appears to fall randomly on the usual calendar. Or maybe it really is just nonsense. You might have to keep an eye out for any strange newsletters, though, assuming you can find one before the janitor sweeps them up.

When you get back to your apartment you discover the Scarlet Youth waiting for you in her usual painting on the wall. She tells you she knows what books you've been reading and warns you not to investigate further before falling into a sullen silence. After some cajoling she finally sighs and begins to tell you the story of the person who had your apartment before you. She insists his name no longer matters but that he too developed an unhealthy interest in certain rooftop evens, strange newsletters, and crazy dead Italians. He knew about the prohibition on photography but was certain he could cheat the system. He waited with increasing impatience until the day the newsletter appeared outside his apartment. At the duly appointed time he was seen heading for the stairs to the roof with a duffle bag in one hand. Once on the rooftop he opened the bag. He set up a tripod and digital camera, aiming the latter at the stars. Setting the timer to activate the camera after ten minutes he quickly stepped back onto the stairs and shut the door behind him. He had heard about tenants experimenting with leaving items behind and knew that they would appear the next day at 6:22AM. Since he himself wouldn't be present for the recording he felt the camera might escape the attention of whatever was in the sky, but even if it was destroyed he was only out a camera. He personally would be well out of reach by the time the recording started, bumped forward in time to the end of the event. Opening the door again he was meet with the pale, greasy light of sunrise over the city and ...
>>
>>69136888
- the disappointing sight of melted plastic and twisted metal. Later that day he told the story to the Scarlet Youth, who said she was aghast that anyone would take a risk like that with any of the things that happen around the apartment complex. The man had dismissed her concerns, however the next day at 6:22AM he woke to the sound of ferocious banging. Seeing no one through the peephole he cautiously opened the door. A small card was pinned to the wood by a stiletto dagger. It said, "donnot trii thott shittee agin"

Shortly after he'd moved out, accepting some smarmy businessman's supposedly great offer for a nicer place with cheaper rent. He hadn't been seen again. Oh well, at least now you know why there's a hole on the outside of your door. And the super expects you to pay to get it fixed? Man, fuck that guy with his own twisted tripod.

While flipping through the channels on a late evening, you flip through an image resembling the apartment facade, albeit in a more pristine state. You try to find the channel again, and luckily it's still there. Bored and a little interested, you sit there and watch the program.

It was a struggle to watch the whole way. It wasn't disgusting, unsettling, or terrifying as you had come to expect from this place. It was just... uninteresting. A solid hour of mundane interviews of random apartment residents from the late 90s, mostly old people who talked about what food they were cooking, their families, or other people in the apartment. In between interviews, there were some scenic shots of the apartment and surrounding areas. The program seemed to come to a close, but you fell asleep from boredom before you could watch it end.

The next evening, you did the same thing. Flipping through channels, looking for something that isn't haunted, and then you come across the same program. With nothing else to watch, you decide that leaving this on would be great for your sleep schedule.

Same thing, same questions, same tired energy. But this time it's different people, although they were just as mundane as the last ones. You watch a little bit of it before you inevitably drift off to sleep as the show ends.

This becomes a routine for you every night. There never seems to be a rerun, and it's always as boring as the first episode. You could be doing something more productive or interesting, but for some reason, 11:30PM of every evening, you've reserved it for this program.

On the few days that you had to sleep away from your apartment, you keep trying to find that program on the sa.e channel. It's never there, and you feel a little bit incomplete the next morning when you don't get to watch it.

In one a guy may have a chance to see Space God and ask a question that will either give him everlasting contentment or a downward spiral into madness. There's a risk there. People have died. Ultimately what does he worry about? Some fucker got his door messed up before he even moved in and now he's expected to pay to fix it, so that's all he cares about. In the other a dude just wants to watch his show. It's weird, but boring, but also his routine, and fuck it he wants what he can't have even if it is shitty.

The only thing I would add to the zombie girl is, if she was from the 1920s and her lease agreement was for a hundred years, will it expire in the 2020s? What happens when it expires? Does she go to her eternal rest? Does she want that? How do you feel about it when she's one of the tenants who tries so hard to be personable and helpful?

It's eviction day again, the super checks his list and see who's on the chopping block.

The first one moved out 5 years ago but continued to pay his rent so the room is empty although the tenants who live next to the room swear they hear him arguing with his wife in there every once and awhile.

Second is on his third eviction this year, other residents are taking bets on how he'll escape this time.

Last is an odd man from the top floor, he keeps to himself and never has any sounds come from his room. Always payed rent with envelopes full of cash usually from a random country each month but nothing came in the past few months, his neighbors on that floor say he's been looking more distressed as of late.

Can't sleep so fuck it let's make another one.

Nightmare. You yawn and roll over in bed. After ten minutes or so you sigh and roll back the other way. Another ten minutes- or was it twenty? Aw fuck it. Grabbing a pillow you plop it over your face and try not to scream. It was a long ass day at work and you have another tomorrow, plus that asshole Todd switched you from evening to day shift so you've already got less than six hours before you have to get up. Pulling the pillow away you stare at the ceiling, trying to will your brain to shut down so you can get some fucking goddamn sleep. Eventually at some point you do.

You don't know how much time has passed but suddenly you're aware of an intense feeling of wrongness. You realize you can't breathe. You cough but it becomes a strangled choking sound in your throat. Your eyes pop open in terror. Someone or something is in your room. Not just in your room but sitting on top of you, across your chest, crushing you under its weight. You can barely make out a shadowy silhouette in the gloom. You try to move, try to fight, but your body refuses to budge. Whatever it is hisses, or maybe laughs. The shadow shifts as it leans forward. Weak light from the street filtering in from your window reveals a face, the face of a young woman. But not human, definitely not human. Her eyes are pure black, like a shark's, framed by the paleness of her skin. She opens her mouth revealing rows of sharp teeth and elongated, needlelike incisors.
>>
>>69140219

"Awake, are ye, ye wee feck?" She has a distinct Irish accent and the voice is surprisingly not entirely unpleasant. "Can't open yer gob? Or has wee Cait got yer tongue? Ye'd think ye'd never been Mare ridden before."

That hissing laugh is heard again as she lifts herself off your chest, then slams down. The air is forced from your lungs. The groan that escapes your lips sounds pitiful in the stillness and dark. As she leans forward her long dark hair brushes your face. You catch a glint of light off those sharp teeth as the near your neck. As she nuzzles close you're certain this is your end. Suddenly you're aware of the sounds of sobbing. The hot liquid against your neck isn't your life's blood but tears. The girl's shoulders bob as they force themselves out of her.

"I- Jus' once I'd like ta be someone's good dream."

Raising up, she sniffles before releasing a far more normal sounding laugh before wiping her hand across her damp cheeks. "Yer a good listener, ya know? I suppose that's why I like ye." She leans down again, kissing you lightly on the forehead before shifting so that her mouth is next to your left ear. "See ya again, soon."

Your eyes snap open before slamming shut again. You groan with the harshness of the morning light which forces you to lash out blindly at the offending alarm clock that just woke you up. Crawling out of bed you make your way to the bathroom. The person you see in your mirror looks like hell. With your finger you tug downward at the dark circle under one eye. It was another fucking awful night, but for some reason you can't help but laugh. In fact you feel wonderful. You aren't sure how that could be, but there's no denying it. You almost feel as if you met the girl of your dreams.

I've always been a fan of "fridge horror" in these threads as suggested by posts like >>69131877 . I've always liked the posts where danger wasn't apparent, and that you needed to exert some brainpower to focus on the fact that it's there. Upon encountering a forest, the only clue you have that a dangerous predator resides there are the tracks on the forest floor, claw marks on tree trunks, and a devoured carcass blending with the dead leaves. Without a care in the world and without encountering the beast, you would have never thought it was there.
But it was there, whether you noticed it or not, and the threat it presented is not any less real due to your ignorance.

Whenever I write for urban unease, this is what I go for:
Mundane at a glance.
Unsettling upon closer thought.
Possibly terrifying under the surface.

I think I demonstrated it well with my story.
> Why does such a boring show have so many episodes?
> Why does it seem like you can't watch this show through to the end?
> Is there some supernatural cause to your "addiction" to this show?
> Why is it only available in the apartment?
> What happens at the end of the show?

I know it's usually bad writing practice to open questions that will be unanswered, but we're just at a prompt level so I think this is permitted.

It started on /tg/. It didn’t even get called Urban Unease until the second thread, I believe.
