Nechronica thread?

>Anyone still playing this game?

-Yes.

>Where do I get an English translation of this Japanese tabetop RPG?

-The wiki has the most up to date translation
-There are still various WIP book translation PDFs floating around
-You can play Nechronica on Tabetop Simulator now. Check the Steam Workshop for the resources.

Let's say there's a doll made to laugh off anything the enemy could throw at it.
How do I counter that?
>>
>>68302741
Hit the other party members. She can't protect against every attack and she'll eventually run out of hinders. Just smack around the other dolls, because your meat wall is probably not that capable in actually dishing out damage.
>>
So how valuable is Dismember in practice? I'm looking to make a chompy Gothic and Rip and Tear+Vile Repast+Sabertooth seems like it would be a fairly effective combo. I'm not trying to make the most combat optimized doll ever, but I would like to be useful in combat. Thoughts?
>>
>>68302833
I see. This should be fun.
>>68302996

What's the most horrific doll in your party? How abominable is she on a scale from Seth Brundle to William Birkin?
>>
>>68303200
Was probably going to go with Holic for the movement skill.

Sabertooth would enhance attacks made with the jaw right? Unarmed Attack 3 + Dismember seemed good. Giant metal jaws also seem neat for a cannibalistic doll.
>>
>>68302996
From a purely on-paper perspective I would pass on Sabertooth in this case because it doesn't interact with your other parts/skills.

As for Dismember; Dismember doubles damage against Legions and Horrors, so Rip and Tear will turn your fists and jaw into a discount shotgun when fighting non-Savants, and you'll gain two points of damage for every point above 10 on an attack roll, which is nice. It would probably be worth it to pick up Super Strength if you're going unarmed, which would take you to 4 damage per attack on non-Savants.

Against Savants, it's great if it works. Ideally your DM has one or two parts that negate dismember so you dont just blow off her arms immediately but the basic attack parts are cheap as chips to use anyways, so you should overpower anything that isnt Auto if you have decent AP.
>>
>>68301289
Maybe it’s like a penitent engine. The whole point is to get the driver killed in a fashion that qualifies them for redemption in the eye of their god?
>>
>>68301915
>Give it a rest anon, these things are only alive because of image dumps and storytimes. Why not wait a little longer so people have more to talk about?

This is a good idea.
I enjoy these threads but don’t put them up just to have them up.

Put them up when you have stuff to share and questions to ask.
>>

>I went ahead and put the last thread up on sup/tg/

Thank you. Though you forgot to mention the other storytime in the thread description when you archived it.

I wonder what happened next in Portugal.
>>
>>68303357
Got it, thanks. I'd just assumed that Sabertooth and jaw attacks would interface with each other. Dismember does seem pretty good overall
>>
>>68303717
Nope. By RAW they don't, it's just another way to attack.
>>
>>68303717

One of the bright sides of that is Feast of flesh will let you regenerate Fist and Jaws so you basically can't be knocked out of the fight until you're annihilated.

Baroque/Gothic is a pretty solid combo that's hard to fuck up.
>>
>>68304137
You need a conscious effort to fuck things up in this system, though, right?
>>
>>68304368
That's not true, I've never had a party of new players who created dolls by themselves where at least one of them didn't think their character was too weak.
At least talk over about your choices with your Necromancer or other experienced players.
>>
>>68304803
They thought that, but how did they fare in actual combat? Mind giving any examples, anon?
>>
>>68305023
I should have explained, they thought their characters were bad after a few battles. I'll name some.

One wanted to be a fast graceful double romanesque who sliced her enemies with scissor hands. She attacked and missed so much she managed to kill herself twice without any enemy using attacks. Another wanted to be a peaceful caring Alice who only supported or hindered and didn't fight. She ran out of parts to use and spent half of her turns punching and biting.
A third one wanted to do an otherworldly psychic girl but found out she couldn't get a good way to recover madness and was stuck with skills and parts she had no way of using.
>>
>>68305664

>A party with both a Double Romanesque and a Double Psychedelic

How did you manage to get a party come together to make so many bad decisions?

>She attacked and missed so much she managed to kill herself twice without any enemy using attacks.

And apparently have the worst dice luck imaginable.
>>
>>68305664
This is my experience as well. The first dolls we made in my group are all a bit of a mess, though we landed in solidly mediocre rather than useless.

Once you've made one or two characters the system tends to click, but before that there are a few things that are easy to trip over.
>>
>>68306541

I've been looking around for homebrewed scenarios but surprisingly don't really see any, the trove just has the core pdf, could anyone spoonfeed me where they are stored if they even exist?
>>
>>68307793

In english? No.There's interest in people playing them but not a whole lot in making them.
>>
>>68307793
AFAIK, if there are any fan scenarios then they haven't been translated to English (and the English speaking community is too small to generate many).

You might be able to dig through some storytimes in the archives for ideas; Nechronica is episodic by design so it shouldn't be too hard to lift something out of a different campaign.
>>
>>68307870
>>68308654
That's a shame. At the very least it's nice to know that this is really just the start of people getting into it (in English speaking countries).
>>
>>68305664
Wew, though miss scissors just sounds like she had shit luck.
How did they remedy to their problems, if they could?
>>
Anons, have you got some good art for friendly NPCs? Anything goes, but bonuses for happy-looking ones.
>>
>>68309818
The Necromancer (sometimes me) allowed them to reroll and we helped make the new doll. It's easy for new players to fuck up.
>>
>>68310570
Ray-K has lots of character art that is fantastic for Nechronica. Spooky enough to be monstrous, but empathic enough to be humane.
>>
>>68308654

There very much are Japanese fan scenarios, there's a fan supplement up on the wiki that has 4 of them to go along with its classes and parts, but the scenarios themselves are untranslated, and scenarios seem to be the hardest part to translate.

There's really only one guy doing the bulk of the translation work so he's gotta decide what would be the most useful to translate and most of the community that does play the game already don't need scenarios so they're a lower priority than pretty much anything else.
>>
>>68310794
There's also Hetza, though he's no longer active.
Also some darker Girl's Frontline fanart fits the mood just fine.
>>

>One wanted to be a fast graceful double romanesque who sliced her enemies with scissor hands. She attacked and missed so much she managed to kill herself twice without any enemy using attacks.
Christ alive. Even the most incompetent PC I've ever met only managed to kill herself once in her combat fuckups, and then only because the fight was near the end and she sliced her jihadi suicide bomber sister.

>>68323032
Nonday sounds incredibly cheesy. I love that.
It would certainly help with the storytimes, too.
>>
>>68322672
The issue I have with this is daily general threads tend to get toxic as they are a reliable place for trolls and people who make assholery a hobby to settle in and make trouble.

The generals i’ve seen for smaller games that remain the most civil are ones where threads are made

>-when someone has things to share, questions to ask, or is making themselves available to answer questions

>-because the last thread was active or had a running storytime when it went down

>it’s the traditional one or two days a week where the thread is just created (for a long time kamigakari were created on Thursday)

This combination seemed to keep conversation and content sharing and question answering going, while keeping asshole levels down.

I say this as someone who used to make sure there was always a WoD thread up for part of 2013, and has had to re-learn the lesson a few times since then.

How would the mechanic work in combat? You smack the legions into the ground and then they make a Final Form out of their own meat paste?

It sounds cool conceptually, at least. I'm just curious as to how you plan to implement it.
>>
>>68326890
There is a part that, when it breaks, replaces the unit it belongs to with a more powerful version.
>>
>>68326890
There's an enemy only skill that kills legions to create horrors.
>>
>>68326922
I actually knew about that one, but it didnt cross my mind to put it on a Legion (since Legions aren't supposed to have breakable parts).

>>68327076
This I actually didnt know. When we started out my DM asked us not to snoop around the Enemy Only parts to avoid us spoiling something he wanted to use, but I guess it's been long enough that I should get to know that list.
>>
>>68327574
It's called Unite the Dead and it kills 1d10 legions to create one Butcher enemy. You can change the value and the type of enemy it makes around to adapt to your game.
>>
What are ways to use hallucinations in a game?

This is a game where coping with madness can easily be a part of the game and is built into the mechanics.

So I am curious if any of you have used player character’s minds playing tricks on them.
>>
>>68328519
My online DMs have sometimes used private messages to reveal info only one person could see. This has been used for false information such as hallucinations before.

There was one time where the player didnt even realize it was a direct message, which made for a pretty convincing reaction when they reacted to the hallucination. We gave him a bit of grief for that.

There isn't a whole lot to tell. We were picking along a raised highway and the DM sent a private message to the player describing artillery shells impacting against the supports. The character immediately picked mine up off the ground like a teddy bear and was about to scram before we asked her what the heck had her panicking so hard.

She's been to the location before and knows at least two people there, but she's forgotten. The working theory is that she was having a flashback.
>>
>>68329349
Fascinating. Is that a drawing of the character who had the hallucination?
>>
>>68329349

What are some character quirks you lads have used to flesh out your dolls for roleplay? For example, there's one character in my group who is lowkey really obsessed with clothes (well, highkey, but she's good at hiding it). Their player has used this as a nice lead in for some inter party interaction and character building. Or for another example, my character didnt understand that being able to taste was out of the ordinary, and it lead to some short lived friction between here and the other party members. I'm interested to see what other groups get up to.

>>
>>68347914
Maybe they're considerably easier to manufacture them in a near-computerless society than modern equipment?
>>
>>68347914

Personally just read it as something more like modern anti-material rifles than a Boys anti-tank rifle. It's not like the creators are really into specific guns.
>>
>>
>>68337412
One characterization thing I often like I emphasizing is how a character's inhuman components affect body language and mannerisms. I find this really helps to emphasize cuteness.

One girl I played always tapped her tentacles together when feeling self-conscious. Naturally, being the least humanoid member of the party, she felt like she had every reason to be self-conscious. Only one of the others kept making comments, but was repaid in kind for the trouble.

Another started out normal enough, but once the mutations set in, she found that her clawed wings unconsciously mimicked her gestures while she was still getting used to them (this caused more than one mess). Getting an oversized tail led to her hugging it as a sort of security blanket (and often to protect it from being grabbed from behind).
Spending most of that game as one of the softer, more vulnerable PCs meant that she initially couldn't stand being covered in blood or similar unpleasantness, but over time, she had to learn to deal with it by necessity. The fact that the party included a girl who was essentially always covered in a layer of blood and dirt and another who was essentially a sludge monster with an overly friendly personality didn't make the adjustment easier, though.
>>
>>68347914
Undead are considerably stronger than any living person, and autocannons can be incredibly cheap to produce with modern manufacturing techniques. They're also dreadfully effective against anything not covered by 20 mm of armour.

>One characterization thing I often like I emphasizing is how a character's inhuman components affect body language and mannerisms. I find this really helps to emphasize cuteness.
Doing inhuman body language has been on of my favorite parts of the roleplaying in this game so far. I've got an insect-themed character and figuring out what she's doing with all six of her arms is more amusing than I really expected it to be.

As a group we made soup in the castle owned by a bunch of vampires we just killed. That was comfy
>>
>>68354939
As a player, an attempted ambush on an enemy base that went wrong. Long and short of it was that more mechanical dolls and creatures were seen as the apex of life and more advanced, while "meat" were only good for spare parts and were currently being used as organic batteries and burnt out. One of the Sisters, so laden with ENH Reinforcements she was nearly entirely artificial, was smooth talking one of the leaders of this group before abruptly wrenching it's head off.

We didn't know that mostly robotic foes like that didn't need a head to function. Or send distress signals to set off all the alarms.

This battle was memorable to me because it was the first one my group had lost. We had to flee after suffering horrific wounds. That's the moment when I realized that a good part of the fun and drama is taking those beatings and coming back for more. It doesn't matter if you get blown into mulch, for if at least one of your group survives, they can stick you back together to live another day.
>>
>>68358197
Bloody brilliant.
Did you come back?
>>
>>68358695
Of course. One of our friends was being held inside, with her legs ripped off (which said leader was then wearing for themselves) and wires thrust into her ribcage to help power the bad guy base. We had to.

We came back with enough explosives to show up on the Richter scale, blew a hole in their base, barraged that leader with explosives then had our most monstrous dolls tear it apart to get those legs back, hopped in the base, rescued our friend then patched her back up again.

Woah ‘dere, dat guy was never not an undead to begin with, just look at the structure of the inside of his head. It was clearly designed to be abstract art rather than ta support a brain ‘dere guy.

Unless he’s had his head and most of his other body parts replaced with ones designed to be scary abstract art at some point after being made into an undead, in which case I’ll say that’s an impressive dedication to his craft, or an unfortunate case of being turned into an unliving art project by a necromancer.

That would be a heck of a twist, but I wonder how you'd manage it? Maybe if your group was accustomed to having the DM run a character to help fill out the group. Or if you happen to be playing with that one Alpha Legion player from that ancient greentext. Sounds hard as nuts to pull off meaningfully.

A lot of the dolls so far have been pretty 'normal' as far as Nechronica goes and wouldn't really look out of place in the book. I'm tempted to say my centipede girl from the earlier storytimes, due to physical strangeness, but the horror aspect to her is almost completely skin deep (partially on purpose).

There's something up with the Thanatos in that game but the player hasn't budged on what exactly it is yet; we know none of her parts are original but not a lot beyond that besides some hints at these weird markings she has (looks like she has ink running in thick veins under her skin; sometimes they throb).

I've got a Junk/Stacy in development that's I think is a bit gnarly. Basically a medic UGV with an undead organ donor trapped inside it; a compartment is dedicated to a store of contanstly regenerating organs intended for in-field transplanting. They've jerry rigged the crap out of their own hull so they can defend themselves now that the world has ended. The undead inside utilizes a tandem A.I. that helps them manage the unit and increases their awareness during combat and such, the catch being that the A.I. locks them out of some functions of the machine, like choosing when to open and close the organ bays so she cant refuse to donate and locking out her voice communications if she tries to protest. [Because having your guts uncerimoniously scooped out over and over is horribly painful]

I'm also considering having the playable doll be the the actual combat computer while the 'A.I.' is the flesh and blood girl trapped inside, who's an unflappable bleeding heart just happy to have friends again. They've aberrated each other over time and the combat computer has inherited her survival instinct as it's developed a personality; any memories it has of being alive would be post-sapience rationalizations and most of its emotions are actually impulses bouncing off from the passenger. I'm not sure how I would play that yet.

Honestly, with how graphic some of the Army Men games decided to get... it would fit. Sarge's War had chunks of head getting blown off and holes the size of a melon punched through peoples' chest.

I guess it would depend on how Awakened they are and how you wanted to do the whole 'made of plastic' thing. If you wanted to go full gonzo then you could play a blue disguised as a green who doesn't realize that the war is over and is still trying to play the double cross game.

You'd need a certain type of campaign to pull that off in, though. You'd need a certain sort of campaign to make the Army Man thing work period, really.

>UGV
Nice to see it's making some progress. What position and class would she have?
>spoiler
So the girl inside doesn't actually feel pain, it's the AI imagining that?
>Because having your guts unceremoniously scooped out over and over is horribly painful
I was thinking of making the process unsettlingly painless for my doll. She thinks it would be agonising, while all she'd feel is the somewhat unsettling sensation of her entire chest just splitting in two neck to hips and some "pressure" when her internal organs are being handled.
In general, she'd feel very little pain.

>class/position
As of now, I think she'd be a Junk/Stacy/Thanatos
I'm interested in playing a meat shield/utility type.
>spoiler
She likely does, but she's an Alice-tier altruist who just wants her new friends to be okay. Since she's trapped in the machine she can't really help any other way. The A.I. is kind of imagining that they feel her pain, because it's tripping all of their 'OCCUPANT IS IN DANGER' alarms [since no proper authorization] and they can't do anything about it since she's overriding them. And like I said earlier, they've aberrated each other. It's kind of to the point that they're two halves of one person who can't quite connect all the way, which is why the A.I. hasn't figured things out; large parts of her personality are fed by feedback from the occupant.

Toying with the idea of having an external face on the machine, probably robotic in nature but a close human simile. Normally the A.I. talks through speakers on the exterior of the mech but when the occupant talks the actual face speaks. I might do rolls on the side to see if they have to fight over who gets to talk.

>pain
I could see a case for either way. Part of the appeal is characters dealing with the Horrors of War when they're utterly under-equipped for it and dealing with pain tends to be a large part of those sort of stories, but I do see the appeal in the weirdness of things that should be horrible... just not be horrible. It's a different sort of disorienting.

Looking over it now, I realize I mixed up my rules for losing a treasure (for some reason I thought losing a Treasure was the same as losing the Fetter, I guess I was tired and got mixed up). Is there anything else here that isn't correct, or any ways it could be cleaned up or made more informative? Return of the storytime!
Picking up from >>68292858

>While Melico is off transporting the cop to the vacant station:
>Coleo scuttles over to where Denver's laying, propped against the wall. She sticks out one of her cleaner hands. "Okay, hand me that patcher and I'll stitch you up."
>Denver digs a small leather wallet out of his breast pocket with a grunt and hands it to her.
>Gingerly, as to not disturb his guts, Coleo helps Denver slide down the wall and farther onto the floor, so only his head is propped up. "Do you have something to bite down on, Dee?"
>"Aw jes' get on with it, Scuti!" Denver snarls through clenched teeth. "I'm barin' my soul here."
>Coleo makes a rueful grimace before wiping another clean-ish arm on a clean-ish part of her shirt and shoves her lower wrist into his mouth. "Just hold yourself together and don't bite my hand off. I have enough to explain to papa already," she says as she leans down to focus on Denver's injury.
>Thankfully the cut is clean, it's just quite long from end-to-end.
>With one pair of hands Coleo flips open the wallet and extracts a length of string and a needle, while her other three help Denver hold his intestines in. The progress is quick, though not without some wriggling and gnashing from Denver as Coleo works the needle through his skin.
>It's a frantic few minutes of stitching, but the job is relatively quick and the work is clean. "Is it solid, Dee? Think you can get up?"
>Denver's only response is to reach up and take one of Coleo's hands for an assist to stand.
>He winces slightly and teeters side to side then bounces up and down on his toes before settling down on solid footing. "Yeah... Much better. You did good."
>"You could've made him still." Imp interjects.

>"Just shove something in right about here," Imp points at a space on her neck. "Though, you know, not really viable if they're not in the mood to let you. I usually need to cut them up a bit first." She peers forward a bit. "...your stitches are a bit loose too. Denver--" She blinks. "...sorry. You" she says to Denver, "probably shouldn't push it too much. I wouldn't fight on a job like that, but it'll hold you together."
>Denver shifts back from Imp just a little bit "That's- errr. You've done this a lot?"
>Coleo looks at Imp like she's just stabbed a puppy. "I'm not going to disconnect his spinal cord Imp! Even without the risk, I'd never be able to put it back."
>"Not for friends, no." Imp declares nonchalantly, before turning to Coleo. "You won't disconnect it all the way, and he doesn't really need it anyway. Just... reach in and pinch it a little. Maybe wedge it in place with a tack or splinter or something if you have one. His spine'll fix itself once you pull it out. The Dead are persistent like that."
>Coleo blinks. "The- the who?"
>"I'm pretty talkative for a deadman," Denver snarks.
>"...but you're not alive, of course." Imp states, as if talking to a child. "No one's alive, anymore."
>Coleo and Denver exchange a look before looking back to Imp. "Imp, I hatched from an egg," Coleo states matter-of-factly.
>"You think you hatched from an egg," Imp shrugs. "Do you have a heartbeat? Can you have a child? Are your cells active, or do they only move when your thought demands?" She stares at her hand. "Are you cold? Can you feel? You can taste. Smell... Do your hands tingle when you rest on them too long?"
>Jiminy chirps plaintively from his spot on the floor
>"I can't put my hands to sleep because the carapace on them doesn't compress enough." Coleo's tone is like she's talking to a six year old who just asked her a silly question. "And I can't have kids yet. I haven't started my metamorphosis."

>Coleo's brow knits together, her thoughts turning to the new organ housed in her chest. "Or, actually I guess I just started tonight. I'm early by a whole year." She reaches down to pick up Jiminy, her distress plain on her face. "What am I going to tell papa?" she mumbles to the cricket as she picks him up and sets him on her shoulder.
>"Hm." Imp notes. "I'm a little jealous... Anyway, we should find the other Johnnys."
>Melico makes her way up the stairs and through the hall to where the others are. "I'm back. I've dropped the officer at the post. Are there others?"
>Denver is staring at Imp like she's a ghost. His words are slow and astonished. "What kind of place-" He cuts off as Melico comes in. "Ah, cracking job. Don't know yet." He seems glad for the change of topic.
>Melico turns to Denver, noticing the absence of a gaping chest wound. "I see. I'll go look." She begins to look though the other rooms.
>Imp looks at Denver. "A dead place," she says simply before following Melico's lead, picking a different room.
>"We should get looking too. Dee, lets take the one down on the end of the hall." Coleo says as she starts toward the door.
>Imp finds a number of small items scattered in a pile on the floor, all small enough to fit in or be held in one hand.
>Dolls, cups, coins, drinking glasses, pens, a weight from a wind chime depicting a sun with a wise and peaceful face. Across from that is a table with the remains of two more uniforms, and some other clothing next to a worn table laid out with sewing paraphernalia.
>Melico's chosen apartment is dark. She notices something on the wall, a hint of lines and curves teasing at her mind as they come in and out of visiblity with what flickering illumination is making it this far in from the hall.

>Coleo and Denver dig through the debris of feathers, quilts, and blankets in a third room.
>Eventually they find a catalog with a large number of impromptu page markers and slips of paper placed between the pages. Coleo leafs through it out of curiosity; several advertisements in the book itself have been circled. The scraps slipped between pages are also mostly depictions of people or advertisements featuring them that have been torn from other sources.
>"...Any of you find a Johnny?" Imp calls, returning to the hall. "If not, I'll go check upstairs."
>Melico fetches one of the lanterns from the central hall and draws her revolver in her other hand. Moving forward cautiously, she re-enters the room. Hearing imp, she calls back. "No, not yet. I'll meet you there."
>Coleo leafs through the advertisements. "It almost looks like they wanted to go clothes shopping," she notes idly. "But there's a lot of... just people in here." She holds the catalogue so Denver can get a better look at it. "You recognize any of these faces, Dee? You're more into gossip than I am." At the sound of Imp's question she leans to holler out the door. "No one in here!"
>"Got it." Imp returns, before stalking out the door and up the stairs, keeping a wary eye all about her.
>The darkness retreats from Melico's lamp, exposing three large sketches along the wall. Headshots of three similar, smiling girls. One almost neutral with quietly intense eyes, another with mouth and eyes wide open speaking with an overabundance of energy, the third’s grin is competitive.
>There’s no ladder and the sketches are nearly floor to ceiling.
>The work is amateur but cleanly done. The style favors strange emphasis on the eyes at the expense of the mouth and nose
>And it's done in blood.
>>
>>68381905
>Denver takes the book from Coleo and starts looking. "Nobody I know. half of 'em aren't even supposed to be anybody I don't think, just drawn for the sake of ads."
>Coleo takes the book back and flips through another few pages. "I wonder why they were cutting them out. Maybe for picking up later? But..." She scratches her head. "They can't have just gone out on the town, could they?"
>Melico lowers the lantern. With nothing else in the room, she turns back toward the hall and heads toward the stairs. She pauses while passing by the room Coleo and Denver are in.
>"The room I checked didn't have anyone in it. There were strange paintings made in blood. I'm not sure what to make of them, but we may not find the other officers uninjured."
>Coleo looks up at Melico's interjection. "That's... what I expected. I guess. I hope we're wrong though."
>Melico nods and begins to head toward the stairs to join Imp.
>Upstairs, as the door to the next floor opens the smell of blood hits Imp like a wave.
>It's much darker up here, only a pair of guttering candles lighting the space, a glance tells her the windows of this floor have been blocked off, too.
>All four apartments are open in the patient, waiting, dark.
>Imp stops to think. Going from the stench, this is likely where the other officers would be found... or, at least, where they were processed.
>Imp hesitates at the precipice, readying her finger to depress the button on her chainsaw. 'Well, they can probably be put back together if we find all the pieces.'
>Giving a wary glance at the other doors, Imp cautiously peeks into the first room, long enough to see most of it, before checking the other openings just in case.
>After being snuck up on once, she wasn't eager to repeat the experience, even if it would lead to... other opportunities.
>>
>>68382014
>The floor of the first room is dark and shines with wet blood under the beacon of Imp's ghostly blue gaze.
>she finds entrails on drying racks, bloody bones with gobbets of flesh stacked in a pile, shattered remains of a number of heads... three male heads, she eventually determines by comparing bits of scalp and skull and jaw bones closely. Their hair and skin tones were frustratingly similar but her experienced eye divines the difference.
>'Arms're all ruined. Legs too, I guess. This is just all scrap. Well, rest in pieces... heh.' The joke rings hollow, even in Imp's head.
>the next apartment is empty. Of the other two, one has been jerry-rigged as a bathing space and the other has a few wooden chairs and empty drying racks.
>Turning about, Imp places a wary eye on the door behind her, and carefully checks the hall beyond. She wasn't so foolish as to simply shout to her friends below until they'd cleared the building.
>Down below, Coleo puts the catalogue under one arm. "Let's go check those drawings, I guess. Maybe there's a hint there." Her and Denver meander over to Melico's room to examine the paintings.
>The art style is very strange. She's never seen anything quite like it. Cute, maybe, once she gets past the odd proportions. And if it wasn't painted with blood.
>Coleo looks the pictures up and down. Her and Denver exchange a look. "Why are there three paintings and only two Johnnymonsters?"
>"Maybe they got a sister?" Denver shudders.
>Coleo grimaces. "I hope not. We should go catch up with Melico and Imp." She turns to move out the door and up the stairs.
>Making her way to the next floor, Melico takes in the dark and macabre sights. Her weapon drawn, she makes her way down the hall. She calls out, "Imp, I didn't find any other officers. Are you up here?"
>>
>>68382381
>"Unless there's more, they're probably all in pieces in the first room. Three males. If there were others, there wasn't enough left to identify." Imp responds quietly, stepping out of the room with the empty drawing racks. "This one's empty, so... probably not."
>Melico's response is very matter-of-fact. "Most likely. There was a few paintings made in blood downstairs. Probably theirs. To be honest, it might be for the best. Now we don't have to deal with them. Have you checked all the rooms?"
>"Yes. You're welcome to check yourself." Imp shrugs, glancing about. "...I don't like this place. Four Jonnies for two outfits doesn't seem right."
>Melico nods. "No, it doesn't. The bloody paintings downstairs had three portraits, all girls. They might be those others we killed. That could mean there's one other. We should go down and meet up with Coleo and Denver again."
>Coleo and Denver work up the stairs. Coleo nearly slips on a slick spot on the floor. She manages not to gag at the smell. "Imp? Melico?"
>"Speaketh oft the devil," Imp quips. "We're at the end. Follow the lights."
>Denver stops at the top of the stairs as he gets a whiff. "Nah, not going in there."
>Hearing Coleo call out, Melico turns toward the stairs. "I think Imp may have found the other officers. They're in the first room."
>"What's left of them." Imp elaborates. "There's... Well, you probably don't want to look, I guess."
>Coleo frowns. "Was there three of them?"
>"Four," Imp answers as her bloodstained figure fades out of the shadows in front of them. "Three in the room, one we've saved."
>Coleo shrinks in on herself a little and makes a nervous chitter. "We- we should probably leave. Soon. Or now."
>Melico's expression shifts a fraction. "I would agree, but there may be one more of those other creatures. If we leave now, we should be cautious and expect trouble."

I'm guessing this one's a gulper eel girl based on the jaws and the filamentous tail with a bulb on the end. Although the jaws are stretched the wrong way. Come to think of it, I don't think I have seen it ever done in the way that would match actual gulper eel anatomy. Probably because it would look pretty odd.

>"So we won't be checking the final floor?" Imp questions, for the sake of thoroughness. Despite her casualness thus far, her body language tells a different story as her spaded tail lashes and her eyes flit to every minor creak and whistle.
>"We can. It might be safer to search the whole building and make sure we won't be pursued."
>She glances back toward Coleo.
>"But leaving now would make it less likely for someone else to find us."
>Coleo trembles slightly. Her eyes slide down to the reflective floor. Too some reflective spots that aren't wood. "I think we should go." She takes a step backward down the stairs. "I want to go."
>There's a short back and forth deliberation between Melico and Imp.
>Eventually they agree that Melico will move forward to check out the upper floors while the rest sit back and keep an eye on the lower floors (and keep Coleo company).
>But before Melico can vanish through the door, Denver takes a step through the threshold.
>Everyone can tell he's terrified but he's still standing firm. "I'll go with you. Shouldn't go anywhere alone in here."
>Melico nods. "Good idea, you can take point. I'm better at range anyways."
>She hefts her rifle and gestures upstairs.
>"Lead the way."
>Denver swallows, crosses the width of the hall, and opens the door.
>The two of them disappear into the next hall.

>Coleo shifts nervously as she watches Denver lead the way up the stairs. She fidgets with Jiminy's antenna a little.
>Jiminy turns and tilts his head to luxuriate in the tactile attention.
>Imp strives to think of anything to talk about while their companions explore upstairs, eager to distract Coleo from the current situation.
>"...I was in love once, you know." She says suddenly, apropos of nothing else to talk of that Coleo would remotely appreciate hearing.
>>
>>68382614
>Coleo snaps out of her reverie. "You- what? In love?" She fidgets a little more, not exactly sure how to continue. "Was... was he handsome?"
>"Yes. Love. It's hard to believe isn't it?" Imp queries sardonically. "But yes. They were... well. I don't know. Was it just appearance? It certainly can't have been. Yes, it was love. Not mere attraction." She says it concretely, without hesitation, without pretense, as if it were no less true than the pull of gravity.
>"A terrible love. A beautiful love. The kind you can't let go of, even if it costs you everything else."
>Coleo blushes slightly, some of her hands work to smooth her shirt out. "I didn't mean- I just- It wasn't what I expected you to start talking about, is all. With what's going on, what's happened." She works her lower jaw in small circles. "What were they like?"
>Imp frowns. "...I can't remember." The words are a whisper, as if she was afraid to give them any value. "But I will. One step at a time, I'll rebuild that memory..."
>"Anyway. I would have done anything for them, such was that love. No hesitation. I would have changed my hair, my clothes, my body, my heart... I even would have killed," She glances sideways at Coleo, "or put myself in danger of death, for their sake. Have you had a crush on anyone, before?"
>Coleo follows Imp's talking with interest, but suddenly goes beet red at the abrupt turn around. "I- I- uhm..." Her legs shuffle pensively. "I might have had... or have a... uhm..."
>"There's a boy who comes by the Library every so often who picks out penny adventure novels and he's- I think he looks handsome. And he's nice to talk to."
>"Good." Imp says, simply. "That's a very human thing. Do you think he thinks the same of you?"

>Coleo wraps five of her arms around her torso, leaving one free to pet Jeminy as she thinks. "I'm... not sure. I know he doesn't *not* like me, I guess. But I don't know if he likes me like that. I'm younger than he is. And we're, well-" She opens her bottom jaw and makes a small show of waving her hollow tube tongue around before drawing it back in and closing her jaw with a wet 'snap.' "We're very different."
>"That's true... To tell you a secret, I don't know if my love returned the feeling either. Of course, you could imagine that... but I don't think I ever knew." Imp sighs. "I... might have been a bit foolish. Even so... I want to 'know' that person again, so I can judge whether or not all of it was fake."
>Imp blinks again, as if shaking away a hazy memory, "...He should think you're pretty, though, because you are. Even if you are completely and utterly incorrectly proportioned to my eyes, you are a very beautiful person."
>Coleo manages to blush even harder. "Thank you! Uhm, I think." She shifts her gaze back to Jiminy, trying to avoid Imp's eyes and hide her own embarrassment. "And I don't think I'm, you know, ugly. My carapace is healthy and I'm a good weight for my age. It's just that being different stitch-job than your boy is... it makes problems."
>Coleo shrugs. "I hatched from an egg, he came out of a littler. I don't even really respirate like he does."
>'At least you still breathe,' was Imp's immediate thought, but then discarded it immediately. "Dreams are wonderful things, even idle fantasies, and I'm the last person qualified to warn you from throwing your heart into something that might not even be real... Just be careful if you do. If you don't..."
>Imp shrugs, "It may become a may have been, but it won't matter in the end. Life will go on, until it can go no further." And then it will go on even further, like a puzzle-box puppet losing pieces with every step.

>Coleo makes a noncommittal 'Mm'. "I think I'll tell him one day. Maybe he'll find out. It could be a fun adventure." She makes a wry half-smile. "Hopefully one a little less... harrowing than tonight." She shifts a little, looking back down the dark hallway. "I hope Denver and Melico are all right."
>"They're fine. No gunshots." Imp assures.
>Coleo giggles slightly, despite the circumstances. "I guess that's true."
>Imp's eye goes up and down as she looks Coleo over. "...You should try wearing green more, by the way. I think it would suit you."
>"You think? Like a dark foresty green or something lighter?" Coleo wonders aloud as she idly pets Jiminy's thorax.
>Imp hums. "A soft green, bright or dark. Not too bold - You don't want to look like a Christmas gift."
>Coleo allows herself a smile that's almost sly. "Well, not before the wedding."
>"If that's what suits you," Imp returns easily. "I wanted a classic white, I think... maybe. It would've been..." She trails off. "Well. It would've been nice, but I never pushed."
>The sound of Melico's cannon explodes from above.

And that's the stopping point for tonight, I need to go to bed. You guys have a good night.

MEANWHILE, UPSTAIRS
>The top two floors are empty and occupied save for the dust and cobwebs. The windows here aren't even blocked, allowing the full glow of the full moon in through the windows
>Melico keeps quiet as she and Denver search the third floor. As they move toward the stairs upward once more, Melico breaks the silence. "Why are you still here, Denver?"
>In a tense hunch, Denver moves through the doorway darting eyes checking corners. He speaks in a low voice "You don't leave your pals in the lurch, Scuti's my best friend, and you're her friends."
>Melico lifts her rifle, aiming it forward as they move through the hall of the final floor. "And that's enough to risk your life against monsters you've never seen in a situation so different from your normal quiet life? A few strangers your friend introduced you to maybe an hour ago? Your boss working you to death is different then being ripped open and gutted."
>"Don't I know it." he grimaces. "Thanks, by the by. Things would have been a lot different if you weren't there."
>His ears flick as he decides for a change in tack. "Are you and Imp family?"
>Melico scans the first room as they enter the fourth floor. A few pieces of broken furniture and a torn rug. "No. I met her today. But we're alike in a way. What do you think of the two we fought earlier? They're not likely from here."
>Denver pulls a face. "Blimey, I hope not. I'm gonna have nightmares about them. Never seen anything like it outside of a few horror books."
>Melico stops as they check the next room. "I see. Did you know they're like me and Imp? We're from the same place."
>Denver's brows arch up, surprise mixed with a dash of skepticism as he dips into the final room. "Are there lots of them?"

>Melico's tone is noncommittal. "Probably. I've killed more than a handful. Some were like the ones we fought. Others were like me and Imp. There were even some like you and Coleo. Don't know if any of them were from here. I usually didn't bother talking to them before I fired."
>She shifts her grip on her rifle and moves to take up the doorway, blocking Denver into the room. The floor is mostly bare in this room, with small bits of wooden debris and rubbish as the only decoration. The windows are boarded up.
>Denver turns around to leave, sees Melico is blocking the way, and stands up from the hunch he was sneaking in. "You got a strange way askin' a-" the slick words give way to something more confused and offended.
>"Oh, you think I'm gonna run away if things go pear shaped? Is that it?" Then shifts into recognition and a mixture of offence and contrition. "Or try to pull your head off or something?"
>"I don't think you'd have the chance." Melico raises the rifle barrel, pointing it toward Denver's recently split stomach. "It's more likely that I'd kill you. After all, I might be the one out of a horror book."
>Denver shakes his head slowly, then: "Nah, you don't seem like it. You aren't trying to charm or act your way to something. And you don't have the eyes of a predator." He finally finishes, raising his hands above his head as he finishes. "One what's killed, sure. But not a predator."
>Melico frowns, her brow furrowing. "Then you're a terrible judge of character."
>She takes aim, steadies the rifle, and pulls the trigger. The sound of a gunshot echoes through the apartment.
Meanwhile, downstairs.
>Immediately, Imp rockets up the stairs, chainsaw in hand. If this were a superhero show, she'd have left a crater in the ground. Coleo has a bare second to react before the tip of Imp's tail disappears around the corner.
>Coleo jumps. Then rockets after Imp up the stairs. "Dee! Melico! What's happened?!" she calls.

>They're both up to the first floor in the flash, though Coleo is clearly the faster of the two. She catches up to Imp as they try to get into the next set of stairs.
>Coleo scoops Imp up into a (very well supported) princess carry as she rockets up the stairs, her dozens of feet thrumming against the wood with her effort
>Imp whirls and nearly cuts Coleo's arms off due to lack of warning, only to miss due to the tight confines and awkward positioning. "...warn me next time."
>"S-sorry," Coleo grunts as she rounds a corner. "Panicking."
>Jiminy, now sitting on Imp's chest, pats Imp's cheek with one of his forelimbs in what seems to be an affectionate or curious gesture as the three of them rocket up another set of stairs
Upstairs
>Denver flinches and shuts his eyes, the sudden noise and the thought of impending agony flashing in his head. The window behind and to the side of him explodes outward, one from the round and the other just from the blast of the cannon, scattering debris outside and letting in a stream of moonlight. He slowly opens his eyes and looks down at his stomach, then behind him, then back to Melico, still frozen in place.
>Melico lowers her rifle. "Or a trusting fool." She turns back toward the hall and steps forward, no longer blocking the doorway.
>"Coleo and Imp will be here soon. I was startled by a shadow from the window. We shouldn't worry them with anything absurd." She walks toward the stairs.
>Coleo rockets out into the hallway, her multitude of legs skidding against the wooden floors, some of them digging furrows as she tries and almost fails to control her momentum. "Dee, Melico! What happened?! What's going on?!"
>Melico, hearing Coleo charge up the stairs and into the hall, turns to face her. "Ah, Coleo. I'm sorry, I was startled by a shadow through one of the windows and fired, though I think it was nothing. Denver and I are fine."
>"We've made a lot of noise." Imp points out. "We should probably just go, now."

>Denver steps out into the hall, still blinking, and puts one hand to the hall wall to guide himself. "Blimey that was bright. And loud."
>Coleo gently, but quickly, deposits Imp on the floor feet first and rushes over to Denver, fussing horribly. "Are you all right? Are you hurt?"
>He sounds more annoyed than anything about his condition as Coleo fusses "Yeah just about." Then he looks over at Imp "Hey, I can't really hear too much right now, could you say again?"
>"He's probably shaking off the muzzle flash." Imp comments. "Always hate fighting gunmen up close. It's annoying - I can never get a good look at them before..." Considering Coleo's present, Imp trails off, "Anyway. Since we're here, we should check the streets from the roof before we leave."
>The sharp sound of a whistle, then a few more, a little softer a little farther, come in at the edges of your hearing.
>Coleo definitely knows exactly what that is. Denver would too, if he could hear it at the moment. The Johnnys, the actual constables, are on their way.
>Coleo makes a sort of frustrated hiss. "The actual Johnnies are on the way, but they aren't too close. If we scram we can make it into an alley before they get here." She moves over to Imp and splays her arms. "Uhm, may I?"
>Imp sighs, "Go ahead."
>Denver can't help but roll his eyes. One more thing. "Oh... Uh." He looks over to Melico. "I'll give you a piggey back ride of you'll be my eyes for a bit."
>Melico frowns, but slings her rifle over her shoulder and steps toward him. "Fine. Let's hurry."
>Coleo and Denver scoop up their respective charges and begin the sprint down the stairs, their inhuman legs carrying them deftly over the rotten, aging wood. "Watch your step, Dee!" Coleo shouts over her shoulder.

>As they sail through the late night alleys and streets, Jiminy has one again taken to patting Imp's cheek with one of his forelimbs. Though he occasionally turns to make a shrieking call at one of the passing alley crickets.
>Denver hoofs along with a long, loping gait, carrying Melico on his back, expertly bounding around and past filth and hazards and keeping just behind Coleo.
>Imp bats Jiminy away as gently as she can before his constant patting has the time to wire her up again.
>At the second bat Jiminy clings to the back of Coleo's shirt and crawls over to her other shoulder opposite the one next to Imp's face.
>Coleo huffs and puffs as she scrambles with her many legs over the cobbles. Her many arms make the ride fairly smooth for Imp, minus one or two sudden stops. "You're going to have to borrow a shirt and skirt from me, I guess," she says to Imp as they hit a straightaway. "Since I don't think we'll be able to get all of the blood out of your dress before morning." Her expression falls. "It's going to be a close call just getting all the mess out of our hair, let alone our clothes," she whines. "Oh, and what am I going to tell Papa?"
>Imp shifts, somewhat uncomfortably. "I... have clothes." She gestures to the basket. "I can change into them... Maybe lo-..." The word chokes in her mouth. "Maybe loan some, if they fit."
>Coleo blinks. "I- I appreciate the gesture Imp but I have plenty of clothes. I'm more worried about Papa finding them. How could I even talk to him about- about all this." Her breath becomes a hair more rapid. "We almost died tonight. We- we almost..." She whimpers. "I want to go to bed."
>"...I could put them in my basket." Imp suggests.
>Melico shifts on Denver's back. "We can always say Imp is not feeling well tomorrow if we need more time. The two we fought tonight are likely from the same place Imp and I are. We can tell you more tomorrow. Denver, you can put me down."
>>
>>68389193
>Denver stands up straight and bends his knees making it easy for Melico to step off onto the ground. After she's climbed off, he stands up and cracks his back
>Coleo slows her pace as Melico to disembarks. "But wouldn't they get dirty? I wouldn't want to get your things all bloody."
>"I have bags." Imp answers simply. It seems to be something of an understatement, which is curious because her basket couldn't possibly contain that many things... right?
>Coleo's jaw works in circles then clicks closed. "If that's all right with you. We just need to hold on to them until I can sneak some vinegar and find time to clean them off."
>"Whenever you're ready." Imp shrugs, swallowing her nerves. 'Only temporary.'
>Denver sniffs the air, and makes a face. "Can't wait to get out of these butcher's rags."
>They're in sight of the Library now, they're almost to the lawn
>Melico turns to walk toward the guest building. "I'm going to head in. I'll see you tomorrow."
>"Melico, don't you want to clean off?" Coleo asks
>"It's fine. I'm only a bit wet. I'll dry my clothes and clean up tomorrow morning."
>The others follow Melico into the guest house
>Denver posts up at a window to keep watch while Imp and Coleo get cleaned up in the bathroom
>They're both clean after a great deal of scrubbing, but there really isn't time to see after the clothes
>Imp pulls out an empty plastic bag, from many others, which she uses to store Coleo's contraband. She folds it and ties it obsessively to prevent it from being exposed to the air.
>She pulls an immaculately clean T-shirt and blue skirt out from her basket, handing them to Coleo. Though they're both quite plainly the wrong size. The shirt is too large for Coleo's thin shoulders and the skirt is too small to be much more than an accent

>Coleo waves off Imp's offer. "It would raise questions if Papa saw me in someone else's clothes. I'll just swap into my nightgown after I get cleaned up." She gives Imp a gentle smile. "Thank you very much, though."
>Imp nods tersely, her shoulders betraying her internal relief.
>Coleo shivers a little as she turns to slink out the door and across the lawn, over to her room, her carapace bare to the cool night air. "You better actually go off to bed. I'll be really cross if I wake up and you've gotten into even more trouble."
>Denver yawns "O' course."
>"...Sure." Imp says non-committaly. She walks off to her bedroom.
>Coleo turns to Denver. "Denver, do you still want to hide out here tonight or are you headed out?"
>He rubs the sleep out of one eye with a thumb as he looks up at the moon. "Yeah, I think if I hurry I can make it. G'night." He's off like a shot into the dark.
>Coleo waves Denver goodbye and then slithers over to her cracked windowsill. Moving extra slowly and taking great pains to equally distribute her weight among her many feet so as to prevent any noise, she lifts herself up through her window and into her bedroom.
>She mistimes her steps and slips as she's working her way through the window, falling back. She moves to catch herself, but she panics. Her hands slap loudly against the sill as she catches her weight and pulls herself the rest of the way through.
>Coleo lands in a pile of pillows and covers in her bed, Jiminy buzzing in with the last of her.
>She's surrounded by cold familiar softness and the warming feeling of safety, then there is a knock at her door.
>Coleo freezes in place, her back tensing up as she eyes the door. She listens for more noise.
>There is another knock.
>Mr. Windsor's voice comes through the door, soft, even, and with a hint of disappointment. "Coleoptrata. Could you come come out here and talk to me please?"

>Coleo slinks off the bed and slowly plods to the door. She opens the door just wide enough to peak her head through the opening. She's too nervous to speak.
>Windsor is standing there, a neutral expression on his face. Though he looks tired.
>"Put a kettle on, and let's talk about tonight." He turns and walks toward the bathroom.
>Coleo makes a sulky 'mm' before retreating back into her room. She grabs her night gown out of its drawer and changes into it before gathering up Jiminy and moving out into the kitchen to prepare the tea.
=======
>Melico stares out her bedroom window, watching for pedestrians or police.
>In her own room, Imp looks for something to entertain herself, because she refuses to even attempt to sleep.
>She goes through drawers, checks for shelves, looks under the bed, glances out the window, attempts to do a handstand, then push-ups while in a handstand...
>In her searching, she finds a magnifying lens, a drawing compass, a letter opener, a box of tacks and a number of other tools in one of the drawers of a small desk in her room.
>Melico spots a police officer walk past the library on what seems to bet a regular patrol.
>Taking the compass, Imp traces circles on her hand idly. The needle digs into her skin and scratches, drawing a minute amount of blood. Setting the compass aside, she stares at the circle, then clenches her hand. Opening it up again, she examines her palm and frowns, before sighing and dropping the compass.
>Rummaging through her basket, she brings out Coleo's clothes
>'...I just can't understand her taste.' Setting the carefully wrapped bag aside, she glances out the window and examines the grounds with a critical eye, before peeking open her door and looking about, then listening carefully for any sounds of unexpected movement

>On finding nothing amiss, Imp returns the clothes to her basket, shoulders her chainsaw, and goes looking quietly about the guest house for certain common items she's scavenged from less well-together buildings in the past.
>With what items she can find on hand, Imp enters the guest bathroom and sets about her task, allowing her eye to glow brighter so she can see better after making sure any windows are obstructed
==========
>As Coleo enters the kitchen, Jiminy hops down to floor and approaches his bowl. He sings a greedy note as he looks up at Coleo
>She sighs as she places the newly filled tea kettle on the stove. "Aw Jiminy, you already had dinner..." Coleo stoops and picks the dish up anyway. "But you would be hungry after tonight," she mumbles quietly. Her hands are wobbly from fatigue as she moves to the cupboard and digs out a handful of breadcrumbs to fill his dish.
>Jiminy chirps and bounces twice in quick succession as she lowers the bowl, and then digs in with gusto.
>Coleo leans her upper body against the counter, her head cradled on a pad of arms. She feels so nervous she might puke, but the fatigue is starting to set in hard.
>"fwiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii" the kettel starts to whistle.
>Coleo uses one of her chitinous hands to lift the kettle and set it onto an appropriate saucer. She manages to lift herself off the counter to go retrieve a pair of tea cups.
>Mr. Windsor tiredly walks into the combined kitchen and dining room, past the enthusiastically eating Jiminy, and sits down in a chair opposite Coleo at the table. He tongs a sugar cube into just cup and stirs it while he watches her silently.
>He takes a sip. "So. Where were you?"
>Coleo cradles her warm teacup in her top two fleshy hands and stares into the drink for a little too long. "Me and Denver went out to go scrambling. We were at the empty tenements over on ninth street," she says in shaky voice. She doesn't look up as she answers.
>"M-hmmm" he nods, waiting for her to continue.

>Coleo's hands start shaking as she tries and fails to maintain her composure. The events of the night come flowing back all at once. The noise, the heat, the fire, the shouting. The taste.
>The cup slips from her hands. She lunges to catch it but her hands don't travel at the same pace. She smacks it away to shatter against the floor. She looks at the cup, then back to Windsor. She hiccups once. "I- I'm sorry. I didn't- I didn't mean- I didn't know-" Her jaw opens involuntarily, though she continues speaking. "There wasn't supposed to be anyone there. I didn't mean- I didn't think it would be dangerous but we heard Imp and she- it sounded like she was in trouble so- so we ran down to her but- but- but-" Coleo's composure shatters completely. Her upper body wracks with sobs. The visage of the Johnnygirl as she screams in rage fills her mind's eye. "I'm sorry, I didn't know," she mewls between sobs. "I didn't know."
>The deranged sobbing shrieks of the Johnny girl are forced to retreat as the warmth of her father registers. "It's alright. Your safe, just let it come. I'm here." He says as he holds his daughter.
>Coleo engulfs him in a hug using all six arms as she cries into his shoulder, intermittent 'I'm sorry's interspersed between her sobs.
>"There were- Imp snuck out too. And we saw Melico but she said she wanted to go out for a walk so we didn't think about it. But- but when me and Denver got up to the roof we heard Imp's- her saw weapon thing. We heard her using it on the lower floor so we ran down to see what was wrong and there were..." Her face wrinkles in pain at the memory."

>"They- they were girls but... something was wrong with them. They'd- killed constables and taken their things and taken their flesh as- as a disguise I guess. And they saw us and tried to kill us too." She hiccups again. "But Melico and Imp killed them. And we found a constable tied up in one of the rooms and got him out. And then we came back." She cuddles into Windsor's neck. "Me and Denver just wanted to go look at the clouds. I'm sorry."
>"Did any of you get hurt?" Is the first question Windsor asks as he strokes the back of her head as she snuggles.
>"Denver got a cut on his belly but I patched him up, and he wasn't complaining about it afterward. The rest of us were fine."
>He hugs Coleo closer "Oh thank god."
>After a moment or two he speaks again. "Now, I need you to tell me what happened from start to finish, so we can get through this."
>Oblivious to any sort of mood or tension, Jiminy hops up from the floor, sliding across the table before finding his footing. He crawls over and starts drinking Windsor's sugary tea.
>Coleo works through the details of the night, from her and Denver exploring the roof to noticing Imp's noise, to breaking into the second floor and fighting the Johnnies and then stitching up Denver and having Melico move the constable over to the station. She doesn't spare any details. Except the metamorphosis and the taste.
>"That was a very brave thing you did going in to save your friend, and saving that police officer. I'm very proud of you. That being said, you took a huge risk going in their like that, you could have both died."
>"You are staying home for the next week, it's just a loss of freedom for a few days, but I think that should give you plenty of time think about the potential consequences of risking life and limb."
>Coleo nods and squeezes Windsor in another hug. "I understand. I'm sorry about the tea cup."

===The following morning===
>Coleo skitters through the front door of the guest house and into the entryway. She looks exhausted, but not horrible considering what happened the night prior.
>She sticks a hand under her glasses to rub the sleep from one eye as she continues into the house. "Imp? Melico? You awake? S'time for breakfast."
>"...In here," Imp returns, tail flicking through the now-open bathroom door. "I'm almost finished, don't worry."
>Coleo moves up to the door, her many hands folded in front of her quite properly. "Are you still cleaning up from last night, Imp?" She can't quite muster the temerity to walk right into an occupied bathroom, instead opting to lean forward and letting her overlong neck carry her head past the doorframe.
>Imp is fully clothed - still wearing the dress Mrs. Puller had given her, which was still ruined. She was currently kneeling beside the bathtub, scrubbing at something. Her tail flicked idly. She didn't look up as Coleo approached.
>"Yes." She answered simply.
>Her basket was resting open beside her, and Coleo could see several of her own clothes laying about the bathroom - most draped over the shower rod, though her hat was beside the sink.
>They were all clean. From her spot at the door, Coleo could neither see nor smell any sign they were messed up at all.
>Coleo's hands move up to cover her mouth as she gasps. "Oh, Imp!" She picks her way into the bathroom slowly, gaze passing over each article of clothing one by one. "Oh thank you so much, they look perfect." Her eyes drift down to Imp, still in her blood soaked dress.
>Coleo's not sure if she can catch a hint of blood over the smell of warm water and soap, but the thought is enough to bring the bile up to the back of her throat.
>She contains the urge to gag. "You still haven't changed, Imp?" Her voice is steadier than she feels. "Your dress must be horribly uncomfortable with all that filth caked on."
>>
>>68390796
>"It might not be possible to save it," Imp agrees, still scrubbing away at what Coleo now recognizes to be her button-up. "but I'm used to it. It covers. Cleaning it might be a waste of time anyway..." She pauses a moment, before continuing, "...in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by monsters, you see. It was... a waste of time."
>From here Coleo can see - better in the light of dawn - the interior of Imp's basket, which contains many clothes, all neatly folded and meticulously cleaned.
>Coleo blinks, not really understanding. "Surrounded by monsters? Did you live out in the wilderness?"
>Imp shrugs, "Sometimes dried forests. Sometimes dead cities. It didn't matter." She stands, handing Coleo her shirt. The tear left behind by her metamorphosis has been sewn expertly closed, and is scarcely recognizable. "Peace never lasts." Her eye seems to seek to bore into Coleo, faintly shimmering in the light, "The monsters are everywhere."
>Then she averts her gaze, somewhat shame-faced. "...Sorry. Your place is nice. I can be wrong... this is just my experience."
>Coleo takes her shirt, marveling some at the stitchwork even as she frowns in concern at Imp's words. If she's bothered by Imp's stare it doesn't show. "You don't... you don't really want to go back to... to that, do you?"
>Coleo's hands go about neatly folding the shirt, an automatic habit. "I know we talked with Pa- Mr. Windsor about helping you go home but if it's as dangerous as that... You don't have to. You can stay here. Even if you can't stay at the Library, I'm sure there's a seamstress in town who would love to have a girl as skilled as you to work with."
>>
>>68390908
>Imp doesn't initially meet Coleo's gaze. "Your place is nice, but I can't trust it." She sighs, turning to look at Coleo. "Friends. Friendly faces are usually just monsters in disguise." The black line seared into her face seems to throb, before Imp turns to the side again. She's looking at her chainsaw, which rests near her now freed hands. "...at least, in my experience."
>She isn't reaching for the weapon, and she seems fairly calm... but even here, doing something utterly unrelated, that she still had her weapon with her was telling.
>Coleo is quiet for a moment, tracing Imp's gaze to the saw. She takes a breath to consider the words before opening her jaw up and wiggling her mandibles at Imp like she's waving hello. "When we were little, Cersei used to call me an angel in disguise." >She giggles quietly despite the mood. "I didn't have an actual neck until I was nine."
>Her jaw closes again with a light 'click,' her expression more somber. "I hope I can show you that me and Windsor at least are trustworthy, though."
>She blinks. "And Denver."
>"Maybe." Imp agrees non-commitally, before abruptly standing from her kneeling posture. "I guess you want me to attend breakfast then? I... can do that, I guess." Her expression is somewhat strained. "...I'd rather try to fix this poor dress, though. It was... not a bad dress. And you wouldn't want me to attend wearing it as it is now. And... nevermind."
>Coleo's eyes widen. Her middle pair of hands rushes up to cover her face in a vain attempt to hide her embarrassment. "I'm so sorry, I forgot! I- I was so tired from last night and Papa asked so I- I never told him about lunch." She buries her face in her hands and whines quietly. "Mmmh... I'm all out of time like a busted watch."
>>
>>68391019
>Abruptly, Coleo brings her head up straight and takes a deep breath in through her nose, exhaling slowly. "I'd only want you to come to breakfast if you'd like to, Imp. It's perfectly fine if you'd like to spend some time to fix up your dress." She folds her arms behind her back and smiles warmly despite the deep circles under her eyes. "And feel free to ask me if you need anything. I can't go out to town right now but if you me to show you where something is, or an extra set of hands or three, I'll be around."
>Coleo eyes the washing bin and the cleaning supplies strewn about. "Is there anything you'd like my help with right now?"
>"I can put everything back." Imp answers easily. "You should go enjoy your meal... I'll be fine." She is already, without a single care for Coleo's presence - preparing to remove the dress so she can clean it.
>Coleo nods, every image of a polite young lady, and turns to neatly picks her own things from the places they're drying in. "If that's what you'd like. I'll be in the main building if you change your mind."
>A thought seems to strike her as she's about to leave. "Oh. Don't forget to lock the door if you're going to spend the whole time undressed. Sometimes the cleaning ladies forget to knock."
>Imp shrugs and hums, securing the door as Coleo exits.

Fin, for now. Hope you guys are enjoying it

An addendum for >>68388841 because a really important character moment slipped through the cracks while I was organizing things. [and thanks to my DM for catching it]
>--Just before Imp and Coleo come upstairs--
>Denver blinks rapidly trying to banish the afterimage of he muzzle flash. "What. That's. Fuck."
>"Not even a 'sorry for losing me head for abit an almost blowling ya ta bits there'? Are you serious?" He doesn't follow her, or push into her space, but he does sound incensed.
>Melico stops as Denver calls out. She turns back to face him.
>>
>>68391143
>"My bad. I was startled. It's a good thing you weren't harmed. If I had been off even a little, you might not have a stomach. You may want to come with me. You'll need to calm Coleo down when she gets here."
>She looks back down the hall once again, but doesn't move forward. She looks down, pauses for a moment, looking for the correct words.
>"I'm... not used to this... Talking to people... Having them care. It doesn't happen. To be perfectly honest, you should be trying to kill me now. I would."
>She pauses. "I'm sorry for scaring you. And for shooting at you."
>She looks toward Denver again. "Thank you for being here."
>"Well..." He would be looking her in the eyes, the intent is there, but he's still a little blinded from the muzzle flash. "Your welcome. That's not how things are here, or at least that's not how it's supposed to be."

Okay, fin for real. I need to go eat lunch.

>dolls
Either Adam Jensen-tier 'I never asked for this' with a nice suite of prosthetics and a bunch of hidden kit stashed everywhere or heavily diverged from normal human anatomy. Hack jobs with questionable quality are always a plus.
>Horrors
For fully mechanical, usually these take the shape of autonomous military vehicles/robots/drones for me. From ramshackle to sleek, either works. If I want to do anything horror-y I prefer they have more meat in them.
>>
>>68385157

For dolls, something like this isn't too bad. For horrors, it should be terrifying and strange, but if you tilt your head right you can just make out what the purpose of it might be when it's not trying to tear apart PCs.

To whom it may concern, October will have some things to look forward to as far as Nechronica goes. We're looking to get a new version of the PDF out. It will mainly be corrections, but there will also be some new content that's been translated since the last PDF was released. There may also be some more stuff being added to the fanworks section of the wiki as well.

>tfw I cant link an excited reaction image because the image limit is hit
>cant even be mad about it because I ate up a lot of those myself
Excited to hear it, anon. Can you shed light on the possible new content or is it under wraps or something?
>>
>>68394353
Hell yeah, anon. Looking forward to that.
Any idea on the new bits?
>>
>>68394305
I wonder what part you'd use for a monoeye. I guess a refluffed Extra Eyes?
>>
>>68387772
I'm glad that you've been enjoying the story, anon!

Honestly, I largely glossed over the first arc and a good chunk of the second (though to be fair in the latter case, I missed most of that one), so I'm tempted to go and redo that. The campaign as a whole was something like a year and a half of weekly sessions (plus a relatively brief period where the GM ran for us twice a week while also running different campaign for another group because he's a madman).

Really, I'd like to get at least Act 3 written up before I start posting again, because I'm slow and I didn't want to just drip-feed the remainder of the arc over like two weeks or somesuch. Rest assured, I'll have more together to continue during the next thread.

>>68385157
I typically prefer to make my cyborg dolls barely qualify as human underneath all their machinery. Pretty much the only things I always leave organic with them are their faces and brains. The rest need not be humanoid.

NPCs tend to cover a broader spectrum, though I always do like at least a bit of flesh to be involved. The least organic NPC I've employed was essentially an AI with an android body that was layered with an exoskeleton of porous bone over top of her entirely mechanical innards. The bone wasn't protective, but it allowed her to interface with her Beast, essentially a mindless, fleshy exosuit she used for extra mobility in battles.

A few enemies I've used have been laser-equipped robo-spiders, mecha shells piloted by tumors, and shocktroopers that are so heavily burnt that their flesh, weapons, and armor have completely melted into one.

I just realized living pudding with a face and girls in power armor are totally things that could exist in Nechronica.

I also just realized we’ve hit the image limit so I can’t post a chibi sister of battle in a high chair about to eat said pudding.

Neat.

What's a way to freak players out that most don't see coming? Visceral things are a given in Nechronica, so something subtler could achieve a much stronger effect.
>>
>>68405069
Freaking players out is easy. Here's what you need to realize: some players buy into games, others don't. It's impossible to freak the second type, not that they or you are doing anything wrong, but rather, they can separate themselves from their characters and won't get affected by the RP.

You want to focus on the others and in those cases it's just a matter of seeing what their characters are invested in and focus on it. If they like an NPC, have them show up beaten up and with different parts every so often, maybe give them an arc. If their characcters have a fear, trap them somewhere and have them confront it. If they are weirded out by chances in their body, let them roleplay it.
>>
>>68406214
So I need to hit things they don't expect, and see how they roleplay that. Understood, thanks anon.
>>
Since the schedule obviously slipped, should we make the next thread this saturday? What do you think?
>>
>>68303319
We had one, Ravetta, who had no eyes. Sje was a cute, eyeless little girl...
Except she did have eyes. Lots of them and they came from all over her body on fleshy tentacles.
>>
Hey, that was me! I'm glad she left such an impression!

Indeed she had no normal eyes, but her main eye was an enormous bulb inside her mouth while eyestalks slithered out from her nostrils, ears, behind her jaw, etc. Almost every socket and joint on her body had a colony of eyeballs all woven together to grant her awesome psychic power.

She was quite fun to play. A very polite and well educated girl who tried to take everything at face value. Mechanically, she was a total tank. If I remember right, she was a Sorority/Psychedelic /Stacy, granting all sorts of Support buffs to everyone and even as her body was blasted by gunfire, her form was held together purely by her own powers.

..until the battle ended and she promptly collapses into a ruined pile of steaming gore.

>>68395764
I'm really happy to read the storytime. Well done! My own game has been going on for a few years now, perhaps a bit too long to storytime with, but I'm glad to see other people are enjoying the game too.
>>
>>68409763
I'd be fine with that.

Can we still call it Nechronica Nonday though?

I feel bad for laughing.
Did her sisters like her?

Describe the oddest place your party has ever seen.

Sure thing.
>>
>>68411780
I miss her desu, and that game. Its a pity the plot overran the GM. If I recall she was really good at tanking and taking hits for others like no other. Im pretty sure she saved Munch's ass back in that last fight against the soldiers.

>>68413140
She got some odd looks but usually got stitched up by the head carnivore/medic.
