Welcome to the Radon and Raiders thread!
Setting/DH adaptation-building thread for a post-apocalypse British Isles where things went to shit in the 1950s. The land is littered with Zones of strange, reality-warping energy, and society has reverted to near-medieval levels as people fight off radioactive mutants and strange creatures.

Last thread: >>68056499
Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html

Thread prompt: Let’s get some more rules and stat stuff worked out, people had started talking about how to do radiation again
>>
Stat-wise so far, we mainly have quite a few weapons started out, such as
>Bar
Basic
300m
Rof - /S/-/10/
Dam - 1d10+3I
Pen - 2
Clip - 20/40
Rld - full/2full
Special - none
Wt - 9kg
Melee stuff could do with developing, and things like armour and other things stalking the zones
>>
Are you man enough to pilot a De Lackner Aerocycle? The US is aware of a few that were deployed for zone scouting.
>>
>>68283193
meant to say USKS
>>
For radiation it seemed like adapting the corruption points from DH worked
The points from 0-100 could be translated onto Sieverts between nine and the fatal amount, with radiation received from different things either in single bursts or at a continuous rate from stuff like zone exposure in different tiers
>>68283193
I would not want to fall off one of those whilst it’s running
Not sure just how safe one would be in general
>>
>>68284373
> safety
> in the era that invented the Davy Crockett
I think you misunderstand just how important killing communists is anon.
>>
>>68283193
I can't quite believe that that was real. It looks like something that Wile W. Cayote would buy from ACME.
>>
>>68287222
We had fully functional jetpacks and everything. It's just that helecopters did pretty much the same thing for much less money and manpower.
>>
>>68283193
That looks like something found during the American Expedition that nobody is able to figure out a purpose for.
>>
>>68287293
Without going full admech on it, it would be funny for gleaners to recover designs for this from a zone
The USKS pay top dollar for a relic of their forefathers, even manage to build one and then have no clue what to do with it

just look at this madness. The pre-fall Americans using them to rapidly scout the german zone would have been in a state of constant, pants soaking terror, flying a blender through a space time warping clusterfuck of spies and special forces.
>>
>>68289173
Germany in the fall must have been a real clusterfuck

Considering that it was the location of the first Zone, was flooded by researchers from both sides, and the recipient for many of the War advancements, “Clusterfuck” is an apt description.

That would make for good “showboat” warfare. A weapon made for bragging and not actual use.
Though one might be useful to scout over some of the more dangerous Zones.

Seeing how the Zones gained strength from the nuclear war, using atomic weapons are an even worse idea at present than even during the War.

I vaguely recall something about the USE and USKS in general preferring "ancestral" patterns of gun when they can be found and are affordable, with this mostly meaning they produce small amounts of Continental European and American guns for their most wealthy and influential figures and forces. BARs, M14s, Garands, etc. would be coveted by the mercenaries and adventurers of the Americans in Exile, with the same going for french firearms for New France and everything from FALs, STGs, and far flung prewar AKs in the Confederation.

I don't have a reaction image suitable for this so have some fingers. Nuclear land mine. Holy fucking shit.
>>
>>68298509
>CHICKEN
>HEATED

Problem:
>nuclear land mine may freeze over winter and fail to detonate during invasion
Solution:
>put a live chicken with enough feed to last the winter inside it, then check on it in spring
>>
>>68298970
How do you even think of that? We need warm = chicken. How do you make this connection?
>>
>>68294574
Chicken-heated? What the heck does that mean?
>>
>>68300562
Well this was way back, post war tech, and the electronics and circuitry had to stay above a certain temperature during the winter. How'd you go about heating something up without any maintenance or re-fuelling for half the year? You chuck a couple cocks on in there, with grain and shit to last the months away.
>>
>>68301291
That sounds like a crazy plan a player came up with that causes the GM to stare in bewilderment.

>Atomic Phoenixes
Brightly colored and sickly greenish luminescent birds of prey lacking anatomical details generally considered important by natural selection like a digestive tract and reproductive system. They tend to avoid everything else living, inhabiting the most desolate and inhospitable places, although it's unclear if this is out of concern for other life or that anywhere with a phoenix living nearby is eventually going to become desolate and inhospitable.

When they die, they explode. Rather powerfully and in a manner which leaves the land for about a kilometer around somehow poisoned for centuries to come. A baby phoenix or the prior phoenix somehow reborn is found at ground zero of the blast.
>>
>>68302824
Fortunately for everything else, the phoenix has an instinctively programmed territory where it goes to die.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephants%27_graveyard
Save for accidents or people capturing phoenixes to kill them in a city full of their enemies, getting blown up by one can hopefully be avoided.
>>
>>68302824
>>68302834
I can understand Radiation contamination with a diameter of a Kilometer, but what would be the bast radius of the explosion? And how many exist?
>>
>>68302937
On par with the nuclear weapons that created them. One phoenix. It never dies permanently.
>>
Did we just make a Phoenix out of nuclear chicken mines?
Thank you /tg/
>>
>>68302824
good work that man.
Sadly i'm not aware of anything more cold war batshit than BLUE PEACOCK, which even by the standards of the day was regarded as a bit over the top.
(seriously, a 10kt landmine, what were they anticipating, bolos?)
But it does give us yet an other reason Germany is excitingly fucked up in this brave new world, because BLUE PEACOCK was going to the Fulda Gap for use by the BAotR, so our Atomic Phoenixes are probably the prettiest thing in Germany these days.
>>
>>68303558
That would be pretty big and disastrous. Let’s scale it back to something like the Yield of the Davy Crockett.

Where would it live? I don’t think it would be in Britain, since it’s explosions would completely disrupt life in the Isles. So it’s likely somewhere in Europe, with its graveyard yet to be visited.
>>
>>68304328
Somewhere deep in the uninhabited lands or in zones could work, there’s a lot of it overall
>>
>>68304328
>>68305627
I like the idea of them living around/near were the mines were being put originally in the North German Plain, maybe focused around the ruins of Kiel or Hamburg?

Rudloe Manor,

2.2 million square feet of underground facilities including an aircraft workshop. And that's just the shit we know about.
>>
>>68312072
When was it made, and where is it located?
Remember, the War happened in the mid 1950’s.
>>
>>68312473
From last thread
>First excavated in the 30s. Has a complete aircraft factory and information processing centres among plenty of other things that are known. 2.2 million square feet of underground fun.
>It's been believed since the 50s that there has been an alien space craft stored there and studied.
>In this timeline it was probably the centre for Zone studies
It sounds ideal for a sort of dungeon, could be filled with god knows what
>>
>>68312072
Looking into old-age zone labs or planes could lead to the place, then it’s just a matter of whats actually inside
>>
>>68312473
It was excavated in the 30s
>>
Everything went to shit in the 50s. Sputnik was launched in the 50s. Is there a Sputnik and what happened to it?
>>
>>68318542
It crashed long ago. The instigating incident was a Soviet attempt to get a man into space that failed in our timeline.
>>
>>68303841
It's objectively no stupider than nuclear chicken mines.
>>
>>68298509
How common should minor shit like extra digits or webbed toes be?
>>
>>68321778
People living a tad close to the zones for comfort probably have stuff like that often enough
I remember someone talking about a noble family always wearing thick gloves for fear that they would be lynched if the people ever realised the great curse of their bloodline... of four fingers
>>
>>68322453
and jaundice. can't forget the jaundice.
>>
>>68321778
A bit less common than cancer, but a sign you are becoming a Changed One. Mostly on the side of Touched rather than being full-on Turned.
>>
>>68323742
Having more malignancies from the zones could increase chance of changing rather than dying to a fatal dose of radiation, but I think it should still overall be down to GM decision if somebody turns or not
>>
>>68283193
Why in God's name would you put the propeller on the bottom
>>
>>68325239
Operators will never ever fall off for fear of blendering
>>
>>68325239
I can see some madman attempting to use it against beasts like a flying blender, only to crash spectacularly.
>>
>>68324968
Becoming a Changed One is actually beneficial to those with malignancies, since those problems tend to be healed or fade once changed. It’s More pronounced when becoming a Turned than when Touched.
>>
>>68329464
Old stuff had it that Changed Ones tended to be pretty disfigured in one way or another, but most with hopes of travelling around more densely populated areas get good at covering these up as to not be outed
>>
>>68330226
Well, i guess “malignancies” was the wrong word to use. They just don’t suffer the downsides of radiation burns or suddenly get cancer.
>>
>>68330458
Sounds good, even if the changing left them disfigured they can handle zones and radiation far better than normal people, the only risk being very large doses or exerting themselves with their power pushing them closer to succumbing to the curse and losing their shit whilst they set alight
>>
>>68330596
Some rad-wizards can fry themselves if pushed too far, Fomorians become more feral at old age, and Horned ones become more like Horned Ones. There’s a price to their abilities, and it isn’t just the transformation.
>>
>>68330596
I would say that losing what makes them a person rather than an animal is a common fear in Turned.
>>
Bamp
>>
>>68331340
It's possible that the Fomorians are not going more feral with age but with exposure. Until a sufficiently large test group is removed from Ireland and observed over an extended time we'll never know for sure.
>>
I was looking at how to adapt radiation again, and corruption points still seem good to use, though when it comes to the mutations from them I’m not sure we should keep the normal list entirely
Perhaps as things can be done to lower someone’s irradiation, malignancies can be removed as the points go below the point that gave them, but mutations are more permanent?
Changed ones are stuck with their malignancies and mutations from their corruption/radiation going up to the fatal dose and not dying

Malignancies can be removed, and radiation can be lowered thanks to an anti-Rad plant found in the London Swamp.

>>68336614

>>
>>68282965
Dobhar-Chú. One of the water beasts of Ireland.
A simple otter made giant and ferocious by the Zone, or a beast that has always been around.
>>
Are there vampires in this setting?
>>
>>68339402
Simple but nice!
>>68340272
Haven’t had anything of that sort yet but if you can think of a good way to fit them in somewhere then go for it!
If I remember right Whitby has all that stuff going for them with Dracula, might make a good point to start with
>>
>>68340272
There aren’t any real vampires. No “riding the moonlight”, not “doesn’t appear in mirrors”, and not “can turn into an animal”. There are some in Europe whose mutations make them sensitive to sunlight, and others who like the taste of blood, you aren’t going to find any blatantly magical like real vampires.
>>
>>
>>68337260
Should have some other means to lower it as well, not everyone in the isles will be able to get hold of that stuff at all times
>>
>>68342037
Nessie does like to get close to her followers. Shy she is not.
>>
>>68343746
It can maybe be cultivated outside the London Swampland but it's not easy. It has odd requirements when you try to grow it away from it's native bogs. Like human blood, about a pint a month for a full grown bush.
>>
>>68345985
It grows just as well with pig blood that has been tainted with radiation, but the soil, humidity, and sun need to be as close to its native bog as possible, and a bush takes a full growing season to reach the proper potency.

>>
>>68346887
There's also the sorry that if you spread it into another Zone then the other Zone might get Londonformed. If this happens another Dragon might appear.
>>
>>68312072
Under Rudloe Manor is possibly the last continuous link to the old government of Great Britain, in those vaulted halls hangs a faded flag in red and white and blue. The people there and about it have an odd cant to their speech now due to linguistic drift and isolation but it's probably closer to the original English than the pidgin speech and hybrid tongues of the other nations.

There are probably no more than a few hundred, a thousand tops, descended from the officers and officials and their families and their friends that sought shelter in the bleak days when the world ended.
>>
>>68350528
Nah, the Zones don’t work like that.
>>
>>68352560
We know that. A lot of people in-setting probably don't know that.
>>
>>68352592
It’s more likely for a Zone to absorb smaller zone materials, rather than those materials infecting a Zone.
Though the rumor likely gained weight due to that guy gathering so much unrefined Zone Metals that they turned their keep into a Zone in and of itself.
>>
>>68294455
Does not look comfortable to hold.
>>
>>68351408
>They only hold some of the underground space, much of the rest is crawling with beasts from the facilities’ past, those that have burrowed inside at some point or insane and mutated break-offs of the human population
>>
>>68356018
It's very likely that those tunnels in this timeline are substantially extended.
>>
>>68356533
More places like it dotted around could work, though not too numerous
Would work for some of the more serious equivalents to a dungeon, old-age bunkers and facilities filled with their old experiments and god knows what
>>
So most dungeons are probably going to be in zones, what with all the emphasis on scavenging stuff from them, does that mean a party are essentially on a sort of time limit due to the radiation?
>>
>>68359080
Yes, extended by shit like having protective clothing and the anti-rad herb. And by already being Changed in some way if they were incautious before .
>>
>>68359763
I would say that the existence of the anti-Rad herb bush is the biggest reason as to why the British Isles, specifically England, are able to hold enough people to produce multiple kingdoms. Proper medicine does more for keeping people alive than anything else except food.
>>
>>68361290
That could explain some of the zones being less harsh, aside from dumb luck
>>
>>68359763
>>68361290
How effective should the poultice made from the herb bush be?
>>
>As rad-vines take in radiation they swell and thicken until they can take no more
>Whilst it is used to draw the taint of the zones out of people, it still draws from all of its surroundings, so unless stored properly it cannot be taken into zones, lest it waste itself
>Due to the manner in which it works, gleaners recovering it from the outskirts of the Great London Swamp must cut it from the greater plant and get it out before it is ruined, or store it to properly shield it from the radiation
>>
>>68364173
Depends on how fresh the herb is.
>>
>>68351408
I'm imagining something not unlike the Brotherhood of Steel but with a way lower tech base.
>>
>>68367069
Order of Saint Turing are also sort of doing that, only with technology peaking in the 50s and being obsessed with expanding their great computers that fill the monasteries
>>
>>68367380
They could cooperate and be trying to reach the same basic goals, but not quite and employing differing methods and be doing it for different reasons.

The Order of Saint Turing want to make The Zones habitable for humanity, either by altering/removing the Zones or by finding a way to reliably survive and live in them. They do it for the good of all people and don't get involved in politics much beyond securing sources of supply and right of travel.

The Rudloe Order on the other hand claim legitimacy from the fact that they are a direct continuation from the British military. They want to reunify The Isles under their rightful rule, but they are also very aware that they don't have a hope in hell of ever doing so.
>>
>>68364173
As potent as the situation needs by the DM.
>>
>>68367533
The Order had been more focussed on just hoarding their stuff and expanding their machines, sending mercs and gleaners scavenging for parts and knowledge in the zones expendably
They’re still alright with any populace near them but they’ve mostly just used their stores of tech and knowledge as bargaining power to further their own ends
>>
>>68368075
That’s a bit too vague. The players should be able to purchase with the plant or poultice, so it should have some sort of standard range of effectiveness.
>>
There's probably some side effect of the anti-rad herb. Nothing is without price.
>>
>>68369912
The side-effects are nothing major, and nothing medicine hasn’t seen before. The healing process still has to take place as the radiation damage is removed, and some people can develop an allergy to the plant, but there is nothing that would offset the massive benefits it brings as a medicine.

I think Touched people are supposed to be 1:1000, so I guess around this? You probably don't count as Touched with this level of change, but there wouldn't be that many people living near enough to be mutated but far enough to not be Touched.
Unless we count any mutation as Touched, then they'd be 1 in 1000!

>>68357671
After diving though several of these outlier dungeons, players finding out they're all part of one, massive, 300 KM square tunnel system would be awesome.
>>68364173
>>68368820
We should probably sort out a proper radiation scale first. Weren't we just adapting DH's corruption table? Probably something along the lines of "one vial, double the price of a basic health potion that heals 10% of your health, will reduce your Touched level by 10%". So, expensive for the average peasant, and probably unnecessary unless they're very unlucky, but a known expenditure for adventurers.
I can't think of the fucking word for that, means "thing that you know you have to pay to do something", I'm tired and retarded, sorry.
>>68368803
>>68367533
A Rudloe Order could be interesting, but I suggest they are more akin to a mercenary group in format (I know not in function), as they have less of a fixed territory-or potentially a more fixed one, depending on how you look at it.
Either way, we have plenty of nations, but few more neutral factions.
>>
>>68378986
The Dobhar-Chu is basically a giant aggressive Otter mutated to have tougher skin, fangs, and claws to survive the aquatic Zones.
>>
>>68378986
The midlands’ defining factor currently is probably their lack of large wars or anything similar, the people in Rudlow could work as a rather neutral party
>>
>>68380070
Stuff like that also helps make coastal areas dangerous, even when it’s shallow enough to not have to worry about sea-beasts fucking shit up
>>
>>68335246
Each factor there does tend to rise with the other either way
>>
>>68376816
It's debatable how much is genuine madness and how much is him hamming it up. Rudloe, Oxford or any number of other places he could have come from and he has at one time or another claimed all an none but has had dealings with every one of them and others.
>>
>>68380733
Thankfully they make their home around Ireland.
>>
>>68384414
The Professor should only be used sparingly as an NPC, he could get annoying really fast if over exposed.
>>
>>68385961
Yah. His main appeal is being found researching in places he should by all rights be incapable of reaching, then helping the party in some small way, like a mention of a harsh beast they had to avoid, some pile of Zone metal ore, or a map of the local zone.
>>
Aside from radiation and insanity, which we’ve got a good idea for adapting, any other facets of DH rules that need adapting?
We could try to stay more stuff to work it all out
>>68385233
That could add more peril to crossing the Irish Sea
>>
>>68387652
I would say that they are one of the more annoying beasts for Nessie to fight, since they always fight in pairs.
>>
>>68390063
Annoying is probably quite right. They have started to spread into Argyll and Nessie likes to catch fish in that area. She isn't happy that they are eating her fish or her people.
>>
>>68391003
It being able to run on land and attacking in pairs could also make them difficult to fight.
>>
>>68387652
Whilst DH generally seems good for this, are there really any things that could work in the higher levels of stuff in DH in terms of equipment?
>>
>>68392376
Hell, most wildlife pumped full of zone-taint can be terrifying, and that’s before the stuff without any obvious predecessors come in
>>
>>68387652
>>68395134
So more beasts worth statting then? We’ve already got almost too many guns seeing as armour and melee are virtually untouched
>>
>>68396437
We need to give the ones we have already stats. They need them.
>>
>>68398263
That was the idea
Anything else in need of adapting aside from stats?

attacking in pairs doesn't mean much if they can't see what they are attacking. Nessie can't be sensibly observed and this doesn't just apply to humans. They are not a threat to her, they are a threat to her people who she is quite protective of and they eat her fish. Sadly Monster Otters can go on land to get away from her and she is stuck in the sea. Nessie can't remove them from Argyll and surrounding islands or stop their advance across the mainland. That would require human effort, sadly she relies on Nimuë to communicate with humans and she doesn't human very well.

Also her humans are more concerned with the Horned Men, Icelanders, each other and other nations of human to make the dedicated effort required. Also reluctance because Dobhar-Chu are fucking terrifying.
>>
>>68402991
Just because she can shift her form doesn’t mean there’s no form. Nessie has had to recruit her followers in the removal of some parasites that were on her before.

Thankfully for the ocean, you would only need to increase the size of animals already there for them to become a threat.
>>
so current monsters in need of stats
- Nessie Parasites
- Spriggans Type A (Screamers)
- Spriggans Type B (Rock hide)
- German Ghouls
- German Radio Zombies
- Dobhar Chu
- Stitched
- Russian Chimerae
- Swiss Morlocks (Mutant Type A)
- Swiss Goblins (Mutant Type B)
- The actual Swiss because iirc they're not human any more either
- Loup de Francais

Any i've missed?

There are Rad-Wizards
- Hounds that seem to fans in and out of existence
- Big cat beasts that look like a mix of panthers and mountain Lions.
- Fomorians and their elder form Vigilant Ones
>>
>>68408501
yeah i deliberately left wizards out because lots of variation + possible pc class, as well as animals that aren't actually anomalous, even if unusual.

Fomor i think are a large & varied enough thing to require distinct design work of their own rather than just coming under that general monster heading.

So, fading dogs, call 'em "Shucks" because Black Shuck was the name for the big scary black dog of misfortune in british folklore.
>>
>>68408731
The biggest problem when dealing with Black Shucks is that they look like a normal dog or wolf.
>>
>>68408959
Until they go on the attack, that is.

Does tea have any special properties?
>>
>>68424874
Just getting the stuff is hard, giving it more value
Either it’s being pulled from a zone that’s managed to preserve it, in which case being in a zone for so long will probably make it a bit dodgy, or it’s being grown in Leicestershire
>>
>>68425672
What would be some good mechanics and rules for growing tea? It could be very fun to play tea plantation owners/workers in a fucked up world after the ending of the world.

Why would there be tea plantations you might wonder? Because it's Britain and we need it and it's not like we can get it from China and India at this point.
>>
>>68427846
You can grow your own tea in the UK easily enough, it aint tea bags but its something.

That might be a bit similar to the USKS situation where most of them seem to be going anyway, enough for force any equipment they can salvage into the zone-borders

Not often. It's rampages are a grandparent recounting to grandchild level of rarity. Patroling within the London swampland is more common, even if it does drive them out of the swampland it's probably killed more Zone monsters than any two mercenary or knightly orders put together

The channel is rather safe since it isn’t seen as a hunting ground for any beasts. It’s mainly used as a traveling path between the North Sea and Atlantic.
>>
>>68463811
The channel was a bloodbath back in the Dunkirk evacuation, to the extent that it’s now a graveyard of ships, most of the Royal Navy was wiped out there or crippled holding a corridor open for the evacuation
No off-land water crossing is entirely safe, but the short distance makes it easy for those who can wait for the right time
The array of shipwrecks that litter the channel can be hazardous, but could hold stuff of value if

Gargoyles have added to the dangers of zones, and reasons to look carefully at irradiated churches, but what has become of seagulls?
Are they even more formidable dive bombers than they are now?
>>

They haven’t really changed much outside of adapting to resist radiation. Their feathers are now a bit metallic, for one. Otherwise, they are still the simple scavengers who will descend upon unclaimed food or sea beast corpses.

That is true, but I think the Seas are already dangerous enough without the gills going all Hitchcocks “The Birds” on anyone near the shore.
Besides, we’ve already made several groups who make their living on or around the water, and them having to constantly deal with killer birds would hinder them too much.
