Chapters' beliefs d100
>>
>>65431776
Could make sense, the scouring of the planet could've come or been hastened by charging into melee, being too aggressive on that front. if demons are what made us kill our world, it'd make sense that excessive blood shed would worsen the invasion.

But, precise, quick strikes from afar would keep such a mistake from occurring on other worlds. Remove the serpents head before it strangles you
>>
>>65431776

Only those worthy of a warrior's death may die to our blades.

Few among the heretics, the mutant, and the xenos are worthy of such a glorious death.

Purge the unworthy from afar, so we may dance to death with a proper warrior.
>>
Rolled 97 (1d100)

>>65431776
>>
>>65431822
It could also deal with our particular means of hatred. Perhaps when our world was first attacked, we had a lot of melee encounters that ended with dead warriors to the hands of Chaos, or corrupted because they got in too close to a particular kind of daemon. This eventually evolved into a complete disdain for them. They aren't even worthy of a glorious death in melee. They don't fight with honor, they corrupt and pervert and warp. They deserve nothing less than the most inglorious death we could give them, face down in the mud with an arrow between the eyes, bereft of any hint of glory.

Farseer: *Abruptly breathless at power armored hug.*

Our Dudes: You have done us a great service, knife ear. For this, we shall tolerate your kind, and render aid to you in times of great need.

Our Dudes: I would have broken your spine, xeno scum, but you did us a favor.

Molten magma. Black basalt, with glowing red and orange beneath. I am sure some Salamander geneseed got mixed into the bag, because I LOVE the idea of a rite of passage being forging your own power chain, link by link, using magma to heat it. Maybe have a splash of vivid green, as a badge to remember the verdant world they lost.

Born in tunnels and caves, accustomed to cramped conditions, few escape routes, and navigating by nothing but the light in their souls. These Marines have made a name for themselves in a combat location few chapters would claim as their specialty. The hives of the Imperium itself. Crawling through sewers, scouring Hab-Blocks, searching out the mutant, the witch, and their greatest foe, the heretic. Within the centuries old halls, buried deep within the towering hives or massive manufactorums is where these warriors stalk their prey. For it is here that the greatest of heretics flee, their home, their nest... and where their taint can be cleansed most completely.

Massed charges, artillery strikes, guerilla tactics, none of these can be relied upon when you fight between wall after wall of residences, streets, pipes, and access ways in such incredible disrepair that to plot a map through it is an impossibility for most, but not these natives to the caves. Be it natural stone channels or mechanicus crafted rock-crete habitation containers, they chart their course or make new ones. Turning the limitations of mobility against their foes in kind. Flamers, grenade launchers, storm bolters, and all manner of armor piecing rounds mean hiding behind a fortified wall is of little concern to these marines. For what better time to lay down a volley of holy bolter rounds, than when your enemies are trapped in a mag-train tunnel with you.

You've nowhere left to hide heretics. The angels of death come for you in your homes, to make you repent for your sins.

Organisation
Codex Chapter

Solo Mode Abilities
Quick reaction is the hallmark of this Chapter. While in Solo Mode, the Battle-Brother is considered to have the Lightning Reflexes Talent. At Rank 3, the Battle-Brother receives a +10 to all Dodge tests. At Rank 5, the Battle-Brother is considered to have the Rapid Reaction Talent. At Rank 7, once per game session the Battle-Brother may automatically pass any one Agility-Based test (for Opposed Tests, the Battle-Brother is considered to have rolled a 01).

Squad Attack Patterns
Oath of Vengeance Action: Free Action, Cost: 1, Sustained: No. When any member of the Kill-Team suffers Damage, the character receives a +4 bonus to Damage rolls against the attacker. At Rank 5, this ability may be Sustained.

Squad Defense Patterns
Only in Death... Action: Free Action, Cost: 3, Sustained: Yes. Space Marines from this Chapter are venerated amongst the Imperium for their ability to fight on through even the most grievous wounds. While this ability is active, the Battle-Brother and any within Support Range of him ignore the effects of any critical damage that would not kill them until this ability is no longer active. Once this ability ends, they suffer the full effects of any critical damage they received. This ability cannot be improved.

Orichalcum? It's Latin for brass. Nice name, I think.

>Why our homeworld is a shithole.

Someone suggested daemons early on. I think that full-on daemonic invasion right from the get-go is a bit boring.

War in general seems like the likeliest possibility, given it's 40k. Perhaps the depredations of a Chaos ritual + extended conflict with Chaos cultists + a few summoned daemons, possibly over a very long time? Perhaps the chapter was gone (on crusade or something), and it was destroyed over decades while they were gone.

Perhaps the Chapter Master was overcome with grief and all-consuming rage upon seeing the barren husk of the world, and charged headlong into a Chaos portal after slaughtering the cultists who summoned it.

(Same anon) Or possibly the Chapter Master chained himself to some chaos artefact or vehicle and was dragged into the warp, vowing not to break the chains until adequate vengeance had been wrung from those who killed his world (a very long time, possibly forever; time's fluid as molten brass in the ghastly forge of the Warp). Over centuries in the Warp, the artefact wore away, and only the chains remain.

Now that I think about it that kind of a fucked up 1st and 5th trial. Oh yeah all you have to do is make your way around... while being hunted by murder bots.

Probably gets them use to close quarters areas cause they can't walk across the desolate surface without being seen for miles.

So, what exactly would be the best way to represent chain whips on the tabletop? I'm drawing a blank here, asides from just bog-standard chainswords, rules-wise.
>>
>>65441594
I'd say maybe power swords.
>>
>>65441933
The more I think about it, the more I'm liking power mauls as the weapon of choice to represent a chain blade. It might not be the most optimal weapon to stick on marines in the game, but for a swinging whip made out of chains, I can only imagine these things would be a real rape blender for GEQs, while overall lacking the punch to get through power armor as well as more traditional weapons.

True.

Also we need to figure out what the planet was like before it went devoured.

What we seem to have so far.

We're made to fight heretics. Sometime in the [Error] millennium we were called away on crusade. While we were away a Khorne cult attacked our home, though the people fought they were ultimately losing. About a decade later we return to find the planet swarming with cultist and the sun practically covered with a warp storm.

We show up as the head cultist are about to summon a greater Daemon and make the world into a Daemon planet. We don't stop it completely but weaken the daemon enough to seal it, Chapter Master Raguel volunteers his bike. To stop the Daemons from pouring out he mounts his bike and flies into the portal to buy the Librarians time.

As for why the world is dead maybe the warp storm covering the sun never went away. So now it's permanently night with little sunlight and the surface a barren moon like surface with the frozen and petrified remains of what once was.
>>
>To stop the Daemons from pouring out he mounts his bike and flies into the portal to buy the Librarians time.

He's gotta chain himself to it. That's too fitting (and gonzo) to pass up.

Also, I think Slaanesh would be more interesting than Khorne.

I'm thinking the world was fairly paradisaical (hence Slaanesh - themes of paradise being unsustainable and comfort destructive). Plus, animosity with Slaanesh would help explain their friendliness with the Eldar.

A suggestion for the planet's earlier climate: a very wet world with extensive shallow seas covering much of it, combined with volatile plate tectonics. Most of the inhabited regions were massive mountain chains that jutted forth from the seas, lashed from all sides by the tsunamis and storms provoked by the deep-sea volcanism and earthquakes that pushed the plates together in the first place.

The seas are now sealed over by massive ice sheets, which hide the seething tides of corrupted life below the waters, where horrendous sea serpents and beasts even more unnatural tear each other apart and reproduce in an endless orgy of violence, and the former fishers of the world now live in massive, mined-out vaults within the mountains, forever pulling toxic metals out of the ground to feed the imperial war complex and wondering when they will dig too deep and too far, and unleash a flood of freezing water and burning hatred into their homes.

I like them having gone from feral world Tribes and Clans to living in these preservation vaults set up by the forces that tried to help the world, or perhaps from their past but rediscovered them in the fighting. Now the vaults are actually mostly clean and nice places to live, but can be busy like a forge world and dangerous due to all the mining.

If you want to go to another you have to take sealed underground tunnels that are pressurized (nobody takes the surface except aspirants). Each one is assigned a guardian who oversees the vault and reports its condition to the Brazen Chains.

It's the power maul guy, back from a power nap. So, to summarize what we've got so far:
>comfy water world called Orichalcum with severe weather but abundant food, natives were aggressive barbarians that fought each other a lot
>Slaaneshi cults were a problem, and corrupted a large part of the planet while the Marines were all out on crusade or something
>they are unable to save the planet from the chaos cults, and end up causing the surface to die
>current denizens are miners who live in pressurized chambers inside their former mountain homes, and the Marines are bitter, jaded assholes with some conderningly Khornate motifs that refuse their Slaaneshi foes the honor of dying like a real warrior in melee
>they're on surprisingly easy terms with the Eldar, since a Farseer let them know that their old Chapter Master is still alive, raising hell in the Webway on his demonically possessed bike 24/7

I'm thinking there's a quest to recover their Chapter Master and permanently seal away the demon on the bike, and that some of their number work alongside the Eldar in this endeavor. The Eldar see the beginnings of Khorne corruption in their ranks, and are deliberating on whether to betray the chapter and have their entire host snuffed out by the greater Imperium, slowly weed out and assassinate the corrupted, or warn the heads of the chapter with a strong leaning towards the middle option, followed by the first if they get caught in the act.

As for how the Slaaneshi cult got it's hooks into Orichalcum, does anyone else have a suggestion for that?

Five Trials [1/2]

First the aspirant must leave their sealed underground communities and make their way across the surface to the fortress monastery. Unfortunately for most aspirants the surface is prowled by servitors programmed to try and kill would-be Aspirants. To traverse the barren surface safely many must rely on tight passages and maze like shallow tunnels and crevasses to safely reach their destination.

Once the Aspirant has made it to the fortress monastery they are fed and given one nights rest as congratulations. The next morning they're stripped of everything and sent into a labyrinth of tunnels beneath the monastery where they must survive three months with only what they can find and craft. Many have perished at the appendages of the ancient warp touched creatures that lurk in these tunnels.

If the Aspirant still lives they will be retrieved after the allotted three months. They will be given another nights rest and on the next morning they will be thrown into an arena with nothing but a combat knife. There opponent is an experienced marine of the chapter. Such a fight is of course impossible, but it is not about winning. The true purpose of this trial is to find the fight in the aspirant. If they submit or forfeit than they do not have what it takes to be a true brother. But if they fight, claw, and bite till the last moment refuses to submit than they may have what it takes.

For their fourth trial the Aspirant will be dragged into a sealed chamber and then be strapped to a chair. They'll be forced to watch for a continuous month the death of Orichalcum and hundreds of other worlds at the hand of Chaos. This is to embed in them the hate of Chaos so prevalent in the chapter. Once they're driven to animalistic rage they're released and their hatred of Chaos is nurtured, here they will learn their mission as the Emperor's angels of vengeance.
>>
>>65446990
[2/2]

For their fifth and final trial they must once again traverse the barren surface to recover an ancient piece of the planets history. Such items range from weapons, clothes, lost locations, and artifacts from the planets primal human past. To return with a great relic of the planets history is believed to herald the future of a legendary figure in the chapter. Those who do this are watched with great interest.

Also I'm going to put together a 1d4chan page to keep track of this mess.

Hey Chapter Master, I've put together some rules to represent you as a special character in narrative games.

Captain on Bike base template:
>Chapter Tactic: Red Thirst, +1 to wound rolls after charging, getting charged or a heroic intervention (obviously)
>Warlord Trait: Selfless Valour, can make heroic interventions from 6" instead of 3" (so the self-sacrificing glory hound can hound glory through self sacrifice)
>swaps master-crafted boltgun for power sword, swaps chainsword for storm shield; final price 112 points
>swaps power sword for Archangel's Shard artifact, gets 1d3 wounds vs. <MONSTERS> & 1d6 wounds vs. DEAMON MONSTERS (maximum rip & tear against big-ass daemons)

Additional abilities for a Legendary Hero (3 total):
>Inspirational Fighter, Blood Angels can reroll 1's to hit within 6" (gives him the standard Chapter Master rule)
>Icon of Retribution, Blood Angels in 6" can roll to inflict a mortal wound on enemies that kill them on a 5+ (makes sense for a bunch of vengeful nutters to get even more vengeful and nutty around their chained-up biker-king)
>Impetuous, can re-roll failed charge rolls (because someone who'll chain themselves to a demon bike & ride into hell on it is definitely impetuous, & because we gotta go fast)

Overall, a choppy dude in his own right that makes his allies into a nightmarish rape blender of death when he gets into close combat with them - and he's twice as good at getting into close combat as your average hero is.

I have an idea for the current climate of the Orichalcum. What if the dead planet... wasn't actually dead? On the surface, things might be an eternal nuclear winter under a dim & dying star, but beneath the frozen-over seas, you have continued volcanism & superheated vents to generate heat and energy. Perhaps life evolved in the depths of this world, rather than on the surface, and most of the biosphere still persists in the lightless depths?

Seeing all that written down in one place has given me some ideas for new bits of lore, and I've revised the pre-destruction section to reflect them. To summarize:

>the black ship crashed because some psykers escaped while they were about to load more on, and proceeded to corrupt the local religion into serving their dark master, Slaanesh
>the keeper of secrets was actually the daemon prince Doombreed, and the bike was the only thing the space marines could bind him to, on account of his resonance to things that go FAST

If you don't object to any of this, I'd like to trade that whole section out for the following:

Never mind, that's too much text for this post. See below for my potential edit.
>>
>>65449385
Orichalcum was a savage feral world of vast shallow oceans and soaring, jungle-covered mountain chains. It had no central government beyond the Brazen Chains, who sometimes served as mediators and negotiators between warring clans and tribes. Sometime in the 37th millennium, the entire chapter was called away on a crusade. During this time, one of the dreaded black ships of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica crashed into one of the mountain peaks of the world. The surviving psykers were taken in by some of the tribes, who considered them to be sent by the God-Emperor himself during a time of severe tribal warfare, which had claimed the lives of most who were wise enough to rule without the Brazen Chains’ assistance. Unfortunately for Orichalcum, it was not the God-Emperor who had led the black ship to their homeworld, but the Prince of Pleasure; a few of the psykers on board the vessel had been corrupted by Slaanesh during the journey, whose promises of comfort and rapture were truly tempting within the prison holds of the black ship. These were the saboteurs who had caused the crash, and they were the natural leaders who stepped forward to lead the Orichalci.

After a decade of crusading the chapter returned to find their world almost completely enthralled by chaos. A massive warp storm had begun to envelop the sun, all but the most isolated and independent of the tribesmen had been converted to the supposed “True Emperor of Unity” and the former prisoners of the black ship were nearly finished summoning a daemon prince of Slaanesh. The chapter master and the first company were able to slaughter the cultists behind the summoning, but found that they could neither slow nor stop the emerging daemon. In a final act of valor, Chapter Master Raguel had the Librarians bind the daemon to his bike, which he then bound himself to with chains of sanctified metal.
>>
>>65449397
He then rode the shrieking, daemonic motorcycle into the opening portal to stop anything else from getting through, buying the Librarians enough time to seal it shut.

Fuck, mate. 2000 characters catches up to you quick.

If only the Brazen Chains had been there, to make sure things were done right! But that's a guilt they'll just have to live with...

I meant that home-grown psykers had managed to avoid the Black Ships, not that offworld psykers got off of a crashed ship or something. I think it's a lot better if the corruption of the planet comes from within.
>>
>>65449732
Well if they're home-grown then the feral worlders wouldn't have much reason to trust them cause they knew the danger.

Besides I imagine what ever Psykers there were would be recruited and there wouldn't be enough left over to cause such wide spread carnage let alone summon a greater daemon.
>>

>>
>>65450363
The Night Land is a horror/love story written by William Hope Hodgson, in which the Earth (and the rest of the universe) is dead and nearly lifeless, what's left of humanity is in two giant pyramids that expand far into the dead earth, going outside a Redoubt means your soul getting raped to destruction and despite it all, one man seeks to save the love of his life. And does, surprisingly.
>>
>>65450363
It's the most autistic book ever written, and it's also a fascinating read about a hero travelling across a dying world to save his reincarnated love from true death in the darkness. It takes place millions of years in the future, when the sun has been extinguished for countless generations & all of mankind lives in one of two superstructures called the redoubts. Outside of the redoubt are naught but bizarre abominations and eldritch horrors that wait for the earth current to fail, and the last light to go out in the redoubts. Once this finally happens, humanity is doomed.

However, there is a force for good in the universe called the earth current. It's both the geological heat that sustains what little life remains outside/powers the redoubts & the entity that directly intervenes two or three times to protect the protagonist.

Overall, the original book is a slog to get through, but it's an unparalleled work of imagination. The Revised Nightland is definitely worth a read.

Additional Writefaggotry:

"Frozen seas and barren mountains are all that greet a visitor to the shrouded world of Orichalcum, forever silent beneath the world's lightless sun. But just beneath the lifeless surface, the oceans and caves of the world yet teem with life. Horrific beasts dwell in the deeps, fed by the constant heat of the planet's volcanoes and fueled by the contaminating miasma of chaos. Lurching mutants scrounge for fungus and vermin in the deepest mines and caves of the mountains. And in great, winding vaults in the mountains themselves, the surviving humans of the world stew in their own squalor and misery, constantly working to pull valuable metals out of the world they destroyed in service to the Imperium they failed."

"Generations ago, these people were fishermen and hunters who traveled the world in great ships and on the backs of great domesticated beasts, but those days are long since gone. Now they toil in the depth of Orichalcum's mines, passing stories of a better time from parent to child. Many men and women endeavor to join the world Planetary Defense Force, in the hopes that they will get a tour of duty upon one of the great submarines that prowl the depths of the ocean, or a tour of duty upon one of the system's patrol vessels, although doing so accomplishes little beyond trading one sealed cage for another. For the truly brave, one may journey to the Brazen Redoubt, a great pyramid of adamantium that juts forth from a lonely mountain chain in the great frozen wastes of Kunakra."

"For such travelers, the way is deadly beyond anything they will have faced before. The air is cold and thin, and there is no food or shelter to be found. Some may have to travel by submarine or by tunnel, and these environmental threats are merely put off in favor of some other danger; whether savage mutants or ship-eating behemoths, neither option proves much more hospitable to the pilgrims of Kunakra."
>>
>>65452754
"When one reaches the great mountains in Kunakra, they find that great, ruined cities and towering cliffs block their way, with only a searing light from behind and beyond these towering obstacles to guide them towards their final destination. Within these cities, nightmarish war machines still dwell - some are long-forgotten daemon engines, some are imperial tanks with maddened machine spirits, and others still are vicious servitors left by the warriors of the Redoubt themselves. All must be circumvented by those hopefuls who have made it this far, and in truth, they are arguably easier to avoid than some of the challenges that the aspirants will have faced already. So long as one has the courage to travel alone, and to stick to the narrow confines of the tunnels and back alleys in the broken cities and mountains, they will likely find their way to the Redoubt."

"All those who reach the Redoubt are given lodging and medical care, and are promised a role in service to the great warriors of the pyramid as reward for having the courage to undertake the perilous journey here. But for a select few men, a greater destiny awaits: those youths who show the greatest promise are given the choice of joining the Brazen Chains themselves, to face the galaxy as their long-dead ancestors once faced the cruel seas and stifling jungles of their world, to walk among the protectors of man as equals, as brothers. Few of the candidates have ever turned down such an offer; they would not have been offered such an honor if they did not possess the will and drive to pursue such a life."

...A thought comes to mind. Nobody has expanded on the threat this chapter was founded to counter. The Eldar allies are up in the air, as well.

I got nothing, just wanted to remind everyone/bump the thread.

I suggest they be founded to deal with a minor xenos that nobody's seen in a few millennia. It's implausible to assume they were founded to deal with chaos, when their rivalry is hinged on something that didn't happen until several millennia into their chapter's lifespan, and having an existing threat be their reason for existing would give them too many things to focus on. Keep it down to one main antagonist, I say.
