it's more about the idea that they'd wind up in position of fame and recognition regardless of when they are. It's just that in the modern day celebrity status is the most common equivalent of that

I invite you to post some interesting female immortals, otherwise dont derail a pretty fun thread please?

perhaps every so often a large amount of new immortal souls get tossed into the mix, as well as some especially tired or just over it immortals finding it possible to get true release from existence.

this ebb and flow occurs irregularly, usually every four to five hundred years. The number of new souls added is also impossible to predict, ranging anywhere from one to fifteen in recorded memory

>are there factions?
Yes. Some immortals will find that they think alike or their gifts work well together, so they will form factions.
>do most immortals know of others? does this happen instinctively, or just a matter of accrued knowledge?
Maybe some immortals have gifts that affect other gifts and these let them sense immortals, and some have to figure it out.
>Age amongst immortals? I think basing it off millenniums lived through would work best
Maybe the phenomenon only started relatively late (maybe around 10000 years ago).
>Antagonistic immortals? Perhaps monsters are lesser corrupted forms of Immortals, cursed to be spread across thousands of identical flawed bodies, unthinking and unknowing their true nature
I personally disagree: to me the whole thing is a hidden world, immortals with mystical powers hiding in human society and trying to stay hidden, but for some reason immortals tend to meet. A certain immortal has hinted that this could be the work of fate, but honestly nobody is sure.

In the event of two Immortals openly moving to outright lethal combat against one another, certain rules are given heed.

these rules are unwritten, and are older than anything close to the oldest of Immortal soul. They are the closest thing to a mantra, a unifying code, that the motley elite have binding them.

>Duels may only be held on solstices, full moons, and equinoxes
>Lethal Duels may only be held on Winter Solstice
>Duels are one on one martial combat
>Gifts, and all possible tactics, are permitted
>The winner of the duel claims any one treasure of their choosing from the loser. A prized memory, dark secret, ancient artifacts, any and everything are on the line.
>Should both participants agree to lethal combat, the loser is instead truely slain.
>The battlefield must be agreed upon, but may not be holy ground of any sort.

Gatherings of Immortals of common interest and value are common, and referenced to as Convents.

Far more common during the youth of Man, when the uneducated masses were far more pliable and compliant to open dominance from Immortals, Convents in the modern day do exist but in no way as grand a sense as they once did.

Notable Convents include:
>The Trinity: three lost scholarly Immortals, always meeting under new pretenses, always a line of tutelage between the three in order of seniority

>Mason's: one of the largest and oldest Convents, the Mason's manipulate the founding, settling, and growth of countries in the modern world.

>Laughing Shame: a rag tag and very informal Convent filled entirely by musicians, poets, and any immortal soul with the ironies and crass of creation for the sake of it within it.

>Gifted with the Dreaming Gate, this immortal is able to see beyond the universe, wander through the minds of others, and even witness events yet to come in his dreams, though such visions are often highly symbolic and must be interpreted before they can be understood. Unfortunately, such wisdom is often too much for his hosts to handle, and can drive them to madness, so it is uncertain how much of what he says is truth and how much is rambling. It is whispered that he knows the truth of what immortals are and where they come from. Perhaps that truth is what broke him.

A summary of the setting:
>Many of the great humans in history are immortal: they don't age, and reincarnated when they die (barring special circumstances).
Each immortal has a unique ability called a "gift": effects range from straightforward strength and speed to esoteric musical skill.
Immortals tend to form groups called "convents"; they were once large, but as humans have become more advanced and less controllable, convents have diminished, although they still exist.
When two immortals agree to fight, they may declare a duel under the following rules:
>Duels may be held only on Equinoxes and Solstices; lethal fuels may be held only on the Winter Solstice.
>All duels are one-on-one martial contests. Duelists may use any weapons, tactics and gifts they have available, excepting those which violate other rules.
>The winner may take as his prize any one thing from the loser: memories, artifacts, secrets -- the only exceptions are the loser's gift, which ordinarily cannot be stolen, and his/her life unless the duel was to death.
>The dueling ground must be agreed upon by both duelists, and cannot be hallowed ground.
Immortals can permanently die only if their souls are destroyed, or by some other mysterious processes which most immortals do not understand or know of.
New Immortals can occur seemingly at random.

so heaven and hell still exist within the world. Magic once did, though only Immortals formed before The Flood can do much spell casting.

The Angels of Heaven see the Immortals as incredibly interesting individuals, comparing them to forces of the universe given thought. Some Immortals such as >>64924260 are believed to have formed directly due to angelic influence.

Where in Heaven an Immortal is a source of endless fascination, in Hell they are boundless possibility. The mortal world is beyond limits for any astral creature, divine or unholy in nature, and having a free agent walking the world is nigh invaluable to the forces of Hell. While rare, Satan has managed to ensnare a handful of freshly formed immortals in devious contracts over the centuries. Devoid of Independence but incapable of death, these poor souls are referred to as Nulls.

The Flood is the pivot event from the world being an untamed place where the rules of reality were far less restrictive and Immortals fairly common to the world we know today. That is to say, Pre-Flood Earth had say 1 immortal in every ten, along with fantastical beasts and magic, while Post-Flood Earth is ruled by science and Immortals may come once every century or two. Very few remember Pre-Flood.

hey guys, just slept off the mushrooms I had last night

as far as thing being anything playable, how do PC's fit into all this?

I was thinking that you could design what were effectively non specific archetypes to let players sort of define their own immortal, but definitely having them be in the infancy of their lifespan starting out.

>His gift, The Trickster, allows him to propagate his knowledge by means of great charisma and technical perfectionism before he can be stopped by those who oppose him, disappearing without a trace just as his enemies catch up to his schemes. His fleeting nature has caused some confusion, as many powerful men with many enemies, ranging from dapper industrialists and mesmerizing scientists to maniacal dictators have disappeared spontaneously or died mysterious, questionable deaths, leaving other immortals confused as to whether they were hosts of his or not.

alright boys, time for some branching out into new territories

>The Kingdoms of Prester John
A myth to the world of the mortal from the 1200's, The Kingdoms of Prester John stretch over all of Africa and most parts of India. Unique in the acceptance of both mortal and immortal citizens, the mortal families of Prester's rule are far more gifted than the average mortal soul.

Most notable however is the unique nature of Immortal and mortal correlations. The same mortal bloodline is bound to an immortal here upon marriage, with the Immortal both picking a spouse and host from the same bloodline, unbroken to the very first marriage struck.

Call me a fucking Nazi but I think Hitler might have been an incarnation of Prometheus. If whoever wrote this Prometheus saw Ford as one of his forms then we already have a good base for this seeing as Ford was a massive antisemite. Hitler rose to power quickly using charismatic speeches and perfected manipulation of politics and got both the mortals (international bankers, mostly jewish) and immortals who held power really angry (conquered Thule). Say what you will about Hitler but there's no denying that the germans greatly benefited from his rule until the whole system collapsed because they were loosing the war. He brought innovation and salvation to a suffering people just like Prometheus. His body was never found and conspiracies that he fled to Argentina are still out there. Hitler is literally a perfect example for an incarnation of this take on Prometheus. If the author of >>64945666 (nice trips btw consider 'em checked) has a problem with this then feel free to ignore it, otherwise can we make this canon?
>>
>>64946392
I definitely think that for the sake of making this as fun a setting as possible that we should try and accept that the morality of an Immortal is far more dependent on how that specific incarnation of the immortal was brought up rather than the immortal in general

in saying that, some Immortals are such strong forces of good or evil that they will always be as such, but for the majority their morals can vary pretty wildly

>Call me a fucking Nazi
You're a fucking Nazi
And this also doesn't seem to work. Hitler's problem was being a bad tactician, strategist and general; Prometheus is supposed to be highly intelligent, and would probably have a great strategic mind if Ford is anything to go by (you gotta be smart to survive in the business world)

oh damn I thought this thread was dead. I didn't specifically think about Hitler when I wrote this, but I intentionally left it open who he might or might not have been. I personally thought of both the original Martin Luther and MLK when I wrote this, but I guess it is open to interpretation.
I guess with that whole Island of Thule being destroyed by the nazis thing it might fit though, a charismatic individual appears, makes a promise of salvation to a nation in an economic and political crisis, enrages powerful people in the process and then dies a mysterious death just before those in who want to see him stripped of his power can catch him.
I'm personally fine with Hitler being a host of Prometheus, since I like moral ambiguity, as long as we declare Hitler dead. Might make for some fun finding the new Prometheus.

so, since this thread could probably die down for good whenever, do you all think another thread in a few days would be worth it?

I was thinking of going on and writing up some further stuff about the lore as well as all of our Immortals/immortal relationships and putting into a Google doc.

some stuff I was gonna cover (vaguely)
>Forces within the world on par with Immortals
I was thinking vampires, skinwalkers, the rare demon, ghosts of a certain age and power

>More locations/immortal culture
Immortal society, immortal-mortal relations, what mortals know of Immortals, Nulls

>Antagonistic forces
Beyond singular Immortals or dickish Convents, universal forces such as entropy personified as beings called Eventuals. For unknown reason, they hunt Immortals relentlessly, finding their longevity in the face of natural law appalling.

>Magic and other fantastic stuff
not sure how fantastical to make this part, and will probably be the most vague just because I think magic is the most impacting part of a setting's feel

Yeah, I want to see another thread.
We should archive it, though, before it falls off the board.

As for other forces, I think it's OK as long as the immortals are the main focus. As I see it the setting is about these holdovers from a magical era hiding among normal people, using their supernatural powers to make names for themselves.
People are free to run it any way they want, though.
