Darkness rises all around, the xenos scum scheme and plot, awaiting the fall of man. Foul daemons wander in the warp, awaiting the barest chance to leap out and devour all that humanity has struggled to obtain in the name of their false gods. All that prevents the extinction of the human race is the Imperium of Man and it's warriors of the Imperial Guard and the Adeptus Astartes, the angels of the Emperor's wrath.
In the face of such adversity, the need has arisen for more Astartes to stem the tide. For the Emperor, let not one of them survive.

Did a Primaris based around this scheme.
>>
What about a world that has no external atmosphere, so all human life exists in a feudal system of underground fortress cities. Medieval tech level. Day/night cycle so tied only to the erratic light emitted by geode structures and geothermal activity powering DAoT lighting systems that emit a fake sunlight to sustain crops.

However, these systems are only found at major settlements. Travel between them through the subterranean passages is a dangerous prospect. Fill them with some sort of predatory species.

The chapter itself resides on the world surface where regular humans cannot reach. Periodically, for recruitment or purges of other life forms in the tunnels, the marines will descend into the pitch black, becoming the ultimate predator of their world.

The locals tell fearful tales of the angels/vampires/whatever that are mysterious guardians against the creature of the dark, but steal away their sons as payment for salvation.

Good setting for infiltration, espionage and guerilla combat makes them a real asset to the inquisition.

As for the home world predators, either keep the BA vampire theme, making them troglodytic horrors, or make them some werewolf abstract and you have a cool werewolf vs vampire set up.

My two cents.

>>64720278
We have Orks as homeworld predators already.
Maybe the DAoT settlers trapped all the air to kill the Orks, and now that the Imperium is reintroducing air the dormant spores are growing again into feral Orks.
These Orks are allowed to exist in order to create hardship for the natives, with periodic purges if they get too dense and show signs of forming a proto-WAAAGH!

>>
>>64718335

99% of marines that pass just take the blood of the hallucinating marine by making a trap, being stealthy or searching for his supply on the specialized sarcophagus that these marines have in the wilderness of their homeplanet to sustain them form time to time when they need to rest from their highly psychodelic travel and survive the feral orks they kill even when trippin that hard. But there are stories of initiates wrestling that blood of specially weakened marines and even giving them the Emperors mercy, those marines have a special place in the Chapter as they are trusted to beat their own Rage and Thirst as they beat that of their older brother.

In fact orks are completely terrified of these wandering marines and seem to believe they are literal breath vampires that drain the air from the lungs to replenish themselves. This is probably caused by these marines being disarmed (or out of ammo) and using their hands to strangle the orks, wich indeed seems to somehow ease their own lack of oxygen.

Chaplains have a very challening time trying to collect all of these to form the Death companies, and they have to prepare in advance to track the marines and the signal of their sarcophagus, and also to clean the zone of orks, wich serves as a warm up for whatever war they are meant to fight.

Acthen and Daijon hadn't believed the stories of the monsters who roamed the vast emptiness between the Lifedomes, they'd thought they were just stories meant to frighten children into behaving. Daijon's corpse proved otherwise. All they had wanted was to see what was beyond the Gate, now they knew. As the hulking green monsters raised their crude looking weapons, Acthen closed his eyes and screamed.
He opened them when he heard a voice call out "Drown them in their own blood, for Sanguinius!", massive figures taller even than the monsters emerged seemingly from nowhere, carving into the beasts with beautiful swords and blasting them apart with strange metal objects, armor being splattered with blood.
It was over as swiftly as it began, two of the giants setting the creatures on fire as two more stared down at them, one breaking the silence that had descended.
"You should not have left your home, that one would not have died if you hadn't," it said, pointing to Daijon. "Go back, the Emperor will see you to safety." The giant opened a pouch on its belt, producing a golden bird of some sort hanging from a chain. Acthen accepted it quietly, looking away to put it around his neck. When he raised his eyes, they had vanished, leaving no trace of their existence other than the burning monsters.

The Rite of First Shot was the greatest of honors. Meticulous planning, hours if not days of every Marine moving into exactly the right place, selecting targets, ensuring that all fields of fire were interlocked, covering every route of escape. Like a cloak of death shrouding itself over the Ork encampment, the Silent Angels crept into place, awaiting the signal to unleash the Emperor's wrath.

Brother Ithuriel disengaged his targeting systems, tradition demanding the shot be taken with sights of iron. His target was a lone Ork, its immense stature and mangled excuse for a face telling of its veterancy. He felt a tap on his right pauldron, his sergeant telling him that all was ready, the shot his to take. Exhaling one final time, Ithuriel focused his entire being on the creature in his sights and began to squeeze.

It was a perfect shot, the Ork's head coming apart, spraying little more than slime across the encampment. The signal rang out across the field of battle and the Orks had not even the time to comprehend the sound as a gunshot before the air was filled with the double report of a bolter firing and its cartridge detonating. Pieces of Orks scattered to the wind, carried aloft on the pressure wave of high explosive, the cavalcade of noise drowning out any attempt by the xenos to communicate and coordinate an effective response. A few managed to reply with their own weapons, firing wildly in the general direction of the first muzzle flash they saw, only to be targeted by multiple Marines and reduced to a fine mist. The barrage carried on for exactly sixty seconds, and instantly fell silent. Another minute would pass as the Marines waited for any survivors to poke their heads out, then they would close the distance and clear out the remainder with fist and blade. Brother Ithuriel once again felt his sergeant's hand upon his shoulder, this time not a command, but a congratulation.

"A good shot, Brother."

Inquisitorial Dossier #77295205
Subject: Former Chief Librarian Macelar Eretic of the Silent Angles

Eretic was inducted into the chapter at an unknown date but from from the few records remaining surrounding his early life it is believed he was inducted several decades before the outbreak of the War of the Beast. His highly potent psykic abilities started manifesting when the War of the Beast began. Despite the heavy amount of stress the conflict inflicted Eretic by the Orks foul witchcraft, he remained steadfast in his duty to his battle brother often providing protection from the foul sorcery. Near the end of the conflict, Eretic and several squads under his command would board an Ork ship and attempt to destroy it from within that they would learn the planet below them had fallen to heresy led by traitorous Astartes. With vox communication cut off with the rest of the chapter, Eretic ordered that the Ork ship be crashed into the planetary capital to start as the opening move against the heretics below. He and his men would escape moments before the Ork ship would crash into the planetary Capital and decimate the heretical government and forcing the traitorous Astartes to flee into the country side. Eretic and his men would start a year long guerrilla campaign against the heretics, disrupting traitor supply lines, destroying key assets, rousing loyal citizens to join his cause, and butcher the fallen Astartes one by one. After a grueling year of fighting Eretic would receive word that the leader of the traitors was attempting a ritual to summon a daemonic prince to the planet. Eretic would then launch an all out assault against the heretics base knowing full well defeat meant damnation for the planet. Eretic and the traitorous leader would engage in a brutal duel in mind and body.

The heretical leader would use his psychic might and knowledge to dominate the duel, throwing Eretic around like a ragdoll and attempted to sway him to give in the the voices surrounding them, to sell his soul to the powers of chaos. Eretic however would hold fast refusing to give in and kept on fighting despite his wounds and the maddening influence of the warp surrounding him. When the ritual was starting to near completion the heretical leader let his guard down for the briefest of moments, thinking his victory of the servants of the Emperor was secured. Eretic would exploit this weakness and gathered his remaining strength into a furry of psychic blows against the fowl traitor, snapping his arms apart, rupturing his hearts, and then finishing him by breaking his spine. Eretic would use the corpse of the leader to disrupt the ritual allowing him to slay the remaining cultist and avoiding the planet falling to the ruinous powers. With their leader dead and their foul ritual ended in failure, the heretics attempted to hide in the woods in hopes of initiating another heretical uprising. Eretic would ensure they never received the chance and has his forces hunt them down to the last man and had each heretic impaled on a spike as a reminder to those who would dare turn from the emperors light. Eretic would receive renown for this feat and honor for this legendary feat which would eventually form the close bond the Silent Angles would have with the Inquisition.

Something half-finished for today, kind of just scribbled whatever down between other stuff. I'll clean it up and continue with some battle stuff tomorrow if anyone wants it. I imagine their battle strategy is very straight-to-the-point, stillness followed immediately by the vital strike, nothing given and nothing wasted.

And for the orks, maybe they were kind of ice-aged beneath the surface by the DAoT humans who blew out their atmosphere to stop an ancient ork invasion as a last resort, and modern humans mining the ice for water and air accidentally dig into frozen orks or spore clusters, which soon wake up and start spreading again. Maybe.

There may also be a tendency towards whispering, because it uses less air than talking or shouting. The chapter could thus be seen as secretive.

I suppose not talking would use even less air. Actually, what if they used an obscure form of sign language like the Silent Sisters? Perhaps they could take vows of silence when they join the chapter. Their knowledge of the Blood Angel's mutations and their links with the Inquisition could predispose them towards silence and secrecy.

What about titles and ranks? If the chapter is divergent, it might use its own. For scouts, I would suggest Akolouthos, literally "acolyte." Regular marines could use Silentiarios, while veterans could use Kandidatos. Sergeants could use Spatharios, referring to the gilded swords they are awarded when they are granted command (The blades of these could be engraved with something referencing their vows), while captains could use Domestikos. Finally, the chapter master could use Mystikos, "the secret one."

This is a good idea. They could make a personalised how upon joining the chapter that they use draw strength from during times of temptation or hardship. I also mean to suggest that the chapter use banners and flags to communicate during battle. Sign language won't work at a distance, but banners will. As such, rather than being divided into companies, they could be divided into banda, "banners." The singular is bandon. Sergeants and Captains would carry banners and signal flags representing their units that they would use for long range communication. Non visual communication and ground to space communication may be an issue, but you could handwave both by using text based communication, flares, or psykers.

Exactly.

Since the heart has wings and calling another chapter the "X angels" is a bit generic, how about the Silent Wings. Of they deploy using gunships and drop pods and are focused on stealth, it could work. It would also be an explicit reference to Sanguinius.

That sounds dope but a little impractical in places which I suppose is the nature of 40k but still. Maybe commanding officers gain the right of speech while deployed so they can actually command distant assets since we seem to be a fairly stealthy chapter, and flags would be, well, a big red flag. Actually, I remember space marines can use blinks to activate their suits systems, maybe they use that to communicate instead. Flags and signs allow basic marines to communicate on a squad to squad level, and their serfs go through rigorous screening so they can act as speaking aids when dealing with outsiders.

>>64758665
The Inquisition probably would love to have close relations with a Chapter that values stealth and secrecy at the level the Silent Angels do, and the Angels would probably enjoy some information and/or resources the Ordos puts on the table.

Perhaps the Inquisition, at first, thought the chapter was pretty dodgy and put some serious effort into investigating them.

>>
>>64758803

I like this idea. Maybe they helped the chapter originally develop its sign language.

>>64755394

You make a good point. Communicating using flags wouldn't work. I still think captains should carry banners as standard, though, and that companies should be referred to as bandons/banners.

Also, another idea I had. I'm not exactly "up" on how Blood Angels successors handle recruitment, but it involves drinking blood from a chalice, yes? If so, the marine who carries the chalice could be termed pinkernes, or cupbearer. After thinking about the leadership titles the chapter uses, I think perhaps they should be shuffled around a bit. Specifically, I think librarians should be termed scholarioi, and the librarium the scholarion. Chaplains should be referred to as manglabitai, or cudgel-bearers. An alternative title here could be skeuophylax, broadly, keeper of the relics. The reclusium should be termed the eikonostasion. The master of the fleet should be termed navarchos. As for techmarines, something like michanikos might work. Apothecaries can remain as they are. Lastly, terminators. They should be termed hikanatoi, the "Able Ones."

Would they even have one? If the average trooper doesn't speak, they wouldn't have a need for one. Instead, they should have a chapter motto, that is printed and banners and inscribed on monuments. What about this?

"Success needs no words. Failure grants none."

>>64781028

I like this. It could be called the Spatharion. One thing we never decided, though, is how commanders give orders and troopers coordinate themselves. A text to speech generator could work. Marines neurally control their armour, so installing a system that converts their thoughts to text and transmits it as speech shouldn't be too hard. The voice itself would be robotic and creepy, and the software would only be used when absolutely needed. It wouldn't be used outside of combat, for example. Marines should also be granted horns when they take their vows. Commanders could use them for issuing orders, and troopers for coordination. Marines would custom make their horns as part of their trials, using bone and horn taken from the vicious void bats that nest upon their airless homeworld. Scouts would speak, as they have not yet taken their vows, and their purpose is to collect intelligence, which wouldn't work if they could not speak.

I think a lack of talking would lead to their vocal cords atrophying, to the point were they cannot talk at all. The average marine is hundreds of years old, after all. Not speaking would cause a great deal of damage over a period that long.
>>
>>64787279
I think text-to-speech kind of twists the spirit of their vow. Could just keep it to text, and they have their own logographic language for quick communication beyond hand signals that they send through their internal vox systems.

Not very happy with it. I don't think I'm any good at action, the pacing is awkward, the scale is awkward, the style and tone kind of change in the middle because I rewrote parts of it, and the weird decision not to use any names makes it kind of difficult to parse in places. The marines feel generic and incongruous. It took longer than it should have since I work on inspiration and have a shit work ethic when it comes to writing - but hey, it's something I guess.
Maybe I'll stick to worldbuilding stuff from now on.
>>
>>64795154
It's certainly not bad, though I do agree that it needs a bit of work. It gets a little confusing around the halfway point and if I were you, I would try to make it clearer that the imperial who the unnamed Night Lord killed was an Astartes. That being said, it's a pretty good story, the bit where the marines were coming up out of the ground was inspired.

Taking things to their 40 conclusion, We have space marines who purposefully attempt to oxygen starve themselves, never talk, and live in fear of turning into blood drinking monsters. Does anyone else feel like they should fuse their mouths shut and only allow themselves to feed intravenously just to be extra special dedicated to keeping the rage down?
>>

That's what Serfs are for. The marine signs everything out and the Serf translates.
>>
>>64796395
I feel like that would be cheating. Too easy to just circumvent the temptation entirely, you need to overcome it by your own will or not at all.
>>
>>64797117
Giving up your ability to speak, eat, or breath through your mouth even to the point of delirium and risking blackouts during life and death combat just to restrain yourself from ever drinking blood doesn't equate to willpower on its own, but the choice does give centuries of practice and training so when the black rage comes the marines have a huge leg up in overcoming it.
>>

Would their mouths be sown shut? Like with adamantium wire or something else?

>>64796165

This might also work.

>>64792026
>>64792890

Both of these work. There's no reason why we have to pick only one option.

Do you think, given their titles as spatha-bearers (The literal translation of spatharii), veteran marines should be renowned as bodyguards? A space marine would make a stellar bodyguard anyway, but IRL spatharii (Other than it being a general term for anyone armed with a sword) served as bodyguards. The Visigothic kings of Hispania had a corps of royal guards called the spatharii. The bodyguards of the Byzantine emperors in the fifth and sixth centuries used the same title. Byzantine governors also had their own private spatharii that acted as bodyguards.
>>
>>64790717
That sounds good. Do you reckon their sign for 'For the Emperor' is literally just the aquila?
>>64792890
makes sense. They're less likely to uphold their vow of silence if they're more than a little crazy, so might as well put them in the loudest thing you can.
>>
>>64798347
The focus on stealth might run counter to the duties of being a bodyguard, which include intimidation of potential enemies to prevent fights -- and an enemy weak and same enough to be intimidated by an Astartes would be intimidated by any Astartes.
>>
>>64798347
maybe vets get inducted into the inner chapter cult and can choose to become more individual operatives that work with outside forces like the Inquisition, hunting down secrets, protecting important assets, doing stuff like researching cures for their geneflaws if theyre medically minded
>>
>>64798606

This is a good point.

>>64798581

What do (You) think about it?

What title did I suggest for honour guards in the end? If I didn't suggest one, we could use hetairos. It translates as companion, or alternatively, comrade. The hetairoi were heavy cavalry the bodyguards of Alexander the Great. The Byzantine emperors also had a corps of foreign bodyguards called the hetaireia, which was commanded by a hetaeriarch. Macedonian companions acted as generals as well as bodyguards, which would work well for marines.

Just adding onto the 'every marine takes a vow of silence' part:

Only Librarians are allowed to speak. It fits in with the Chief Librarian being the figure of legend. Perhaps said Chief Librarian broke his vow of silence at a perfect and opportune moment, delivering an absolutely crucial insight or warning to the Chapter Master, which saved the chapter from utter extinction.
>>
>>64805467

I agree with this. Librarians may need to speak anyway to properly use their powers. They should, however, limit their speech.
>>
>>64805494

Oh yes, absolutely. A wise man only speaks because he has something to say, after all. But communication with other forces may be problematic if all we have is ultra-secret sign-language and such. Ergo, only Librarians are allowed to speak.

Maybe there's a dedicated role of Chapter Serf that does the intra-force communications when no members of the Librarium are available.
>>
>>64805548

Didn't we decide that marines use text-based communication when in armour? They also carry horns for long range communication, and for situations were they are out of armour. If the chapter monastery was attacked very suddenly and marines were caught out of armour, they would use their horns to alert the rest of the monastery. Also, I think Chapter serfs should be termed Akritai. They were a form of Byzantine light infantry who acted as irregular border guards.

Thread is about to hit bump limit, I plan on archiving it. Should we start a new one or are we done with this?

I think there are a few more things we need to discuss.
