Hello, I'm Techbaron and I'm one of the lead developers on the fan-made 1.5 version for Legends of the Wulin that you can download below. Legends of the Wulin was released several years ago and was quickly known for being poorly edited and laid out, with essential rules split by over 100 pages of setting fluff, among other issues. This 1.5 version condenses all the rules down into a more understandable layout; fixes the inconsistent terminology and wording problems that littered 1.0; and finally updates some of the rules to enable a faster and more tactically interesting game.

>>
It should be noted that only the character generation, basic rules, and Secret Arts sections are in this document. For the kung fu styles that any character would use and details about the setting of Shen Zhou, go to http://wulinlegends.pbworks.com/ where there are many homebrew styles to choose from, or buy the official rulebook here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/97637/Legends-of-the-Wulin--presales-edition. An important note is that the publisher, EOS SAMA LLC, appears to 1) be no more and 2) have engaged in several shady business practices before its doors closed.

If you wish to support the authors of Legends of the Wulin in their new projects, check out http://sonsofthesingularity.com/ and https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/244258/Tian-Shang-Lone-Wolf-Fists-Eyebleed-playtest-version
>>
A special thank you has to go out to the makers of the Half Burnt Manual from which a few of the extraordinary arts as well as some errata were taken. You can find the Half Burnt Manual here: http://wulinlegends.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/100840843/HalfBurntManual_FINAL.pdf

>>
>>64167345
As did we! Due to the publisher folding, the originally intended updates and the successor game to Legends of the Wulin were never released. The group that worked on this project has a collective 20 years of playing this game under our belts, and we felt that the game deserved a little more love.

It is the day of reckoning.

This is the first version of 1.5. We intend to release one further 1.5.1 version which will include a final round of edits and a new section dedicated to GMing the game. That section will include a way to quickly create NPCs and suggestions on how to create and run interesting fights.

I might actually get around to learning to play now that I don't have to work so hard to figure it all out. It's a lot easier to jump back and forth with a physical copy than it would be with a PDF.

Does the system work well with a refluffing or does it only work in Jianghu?
>>
>>64167576
One of the secondary team members here, I've been in games that refluffed it into all kinds of things, from kung fu giant robots in space to the Nanoha game likely being referenced by >>64167463

LotW works great for anything action oriented that puts combat at the center of its storytelling, letting fights have interesting narrative consequences while also making the experience of engaging in combat extremely fun.
>>
>>64167576
The system works fairly well with refluffing. I've played LotW games which were set in sci-fi, magical, modern day, and magical-scifi settings. The only issue you'll run into is the Secret Arts which are tied into the five element view of ancient China. It is possible to ignore the element part of the Secret Arts, however.

A big thing with LOTW: Combat should MEAN something. You don't have D&D-style random encounters. There should be some emotional investment going into the fight (Or the fight should be setup for later stuff. You can totally have bandits attack the players to set up a local bandit leader as a threat but you wouldn't have 1d4 bandits because you were travelling for 8 hours)
>>
>>64167070
>Legends of the Wulin was released several years ago and was quickly known for being poorly edited and laid out, with essential rules split by over 100 pages of setting fluff, among other issues
It was better than Weapons of the Gods, at least.

Anyways, thanks for this, downloading now. Legends of the Wulin is a cool game, but I haven't seen much discussion of it for a couple years now. Hopefully this will give it a bit of a revival.
>>
>>64168029
Oh, no doubt. Legends of the Wulin was a big step up from Weapons of the Gods. You can see how much love Legends of the Wulin got, that Weapons of the Gods didn't, when you go to the homebrew wiki, which has a wealth of fanmade content.
>>
>>64168059
I don't know, there was a lot of homebrew content back on the old Eos Press forums for WotG. Some really cool stuff, I wish I had saved it. But yeah, the homebrew wiki is great, it does definitely show that LotW is a game that people like and just wish was less clunky to play with. So I'm very happy you made this streamlined edition. It's making me want to start up a game again, see if I can rope anyone in.

>>
On a skim-through, I didn't see a list of errata changes between 1.5 and core. Am I just blind, or would you mind posting a list of actual mechanics changes?
>>
>>64168433
There isn't an errata list as this is a complete document rather than just errata. That said, the following was changed:

1) The Scholar archetype was removed as it didn't fit with the rest of the combat system, being both too slow and too expensive for players to effectively use.
2) Warriors were improved so that their manipulation of Combat Conditions was expanded to all Conditions so Warriors can now, in battle, soothe any beneficial condition in battle.
3) Chi regeneration was improved from 2 to 3.
4) Focus on Breath was changed to 'take a ripple and gain an extra point of chi' on init. This was done to free up sets for more interesting things, like shaping waves.
5) Secret Arts Archetypes now have a choice of two different manipulation skills rather than one.
6) More Extraordinary Arts were added to all archetypes.
7) Two new weapon types were added to the game.
8) Special weapons were nerfed (you get one extra trait rather than all the traits of a second weapon on your primary weapon type), but special weapon creating chi techniques were buffed because of this.

There are other changes but these are the main ones.
>>
>>64168433
>>64168519
Other Lead Dev here

Also:

9) Starting Rank is 5, not 4, because WHY was Rank 5 a thing if you never played in it? However, it occupies almost the same space Rank 4 did before (same Lake size, same number of River slots, etc.).
10) Secret Art manipulation techniques were generalized into something *all* characters get for free, except for Quick Work. You still need a given type of Secret Arts' Toolset Lore to be able to really do anything with their related conditions.
>>
Question! Can you not make Waves during step 2 of fighting? Only during Step 1?
>>
>>64168967
Yes, only during step 1, the initiative roll, can you do Waves.
>>
>>64168967
>>64169004
It makes sense given that waves resolve when you hit your personal step 2, when you roll your attacks. So they start on init, anyone faster than you can try to mess with them, and then if it's still unbroken it happens at the start of your turn.
>>

>>

>64167070
In the description of the River you say "floating occurs when you take dice out and apply them to an existing set..." when I think you meant to say "flowing," since just earlier in that paragraph you say "floating," is the act of storing un-used sets.

>>
>>64167070
It feels nice to suddenly not have nearly as much anxiety about trying to learn this game.
>>
>>64172662

I played Claire, the character whose art is in >>64173707's post.

Not to usurp what he wants to write, but the short answer is:

-ditch the chinese mysticism altogether
-"magic" now encompasses secret arts and kung fu
-external kung fu is fightan style, as usual
-internal kung fu techniques blend with external to be the bigger spells, e.g. adding +Strike and +Damage and maybe a Knockback rider to a normal strike makes a big Buster Spell like Divine Buster
-secret arts can be used on their own OR wrapped up in spells (via Quick Work). Claire, as a Courtier, used both Friendship Lasers as well as normal Courtier word tricks outside of combat.
>>
>>64174947
The only thing to add to this is increasing the size of Zones, along with general refluffing to reflect the increased power scale.

We've gone back and forth on how to deal with flight and ended up just making 'The Sky' one zone that's adjacent to all normal zones, in most circumstances, so fliers have an advantage without it just being annoying to actually deal with.

The last thing to mention is the stuff that really works RAW- Befriending with superior firepower. At the end of a fight you can inflict any kind of condition, so beating the crap out of someone and making them your best friend is totally supported, even if you're not playing a courtier.

>>
>Does the system work well with a refluffing
>>
Do you guys have a character sheet?
Is it necessary to use the main book anyways?
>>
>>64176969
The core book is not necessary. The only things not included in this document are the setting fluff for Shen Zhou, fantasy China, and the kung Fu styles that came with the book. You can use only the external and internal styles on the homebrew wiki, wulinlegends, and be completely fine.
>>
>>64177027
>>64176969
I'd say be wary of homebrew, but there's just as much busted stuff in the core book. The Half Burnt Manual has some tweaks for the core styles, as does the wiki. When it comes to the wiki, you can pretty much trust stuff by Zechstyr, and you can use that to assess other styles and tweak them if you need to.
>>
>>64167070
I nearly got into a lewd game of this but missed out because of GM shifts getting messed up. I hope this helps breathe some life into the game and makes it more accessible!
>>
>>64177873
I've heard of lewd LotW games before, too. I wonder what about the system makes people use it for that?
>>
>>64178326
It's a rare system where narrative directly influences the mechanics, and relationships can directly influence narrative.
It's a very good fit for people who like aesthetics of Asian girls and martial artists fetishes.
You can turn monstery but mostly just a bit so it fits monstergirl fetishists and flurries and corruption fags.
There's also a way to bend others to your will as post combat consequences so mind control folks might like that.

Finally, you get chi from fucking the right sort of people so minmaxers love getting the right relationship to fuck and superpower themselves with.

Also most of my friends and I are degenerates.
>>
>>64167070
How easy would it be to convert this into a semi-cyberpunk setting?
>>
My urge to run a lewd game of this has soared higher than the clouds.
>>
>>64178547
Depends on how much you're willing to compromise. As long as you're okay with PC's being powerful, competent badasses, even if there are forces in the world that far exceed them, it'd work okay. LotW characters are meant to be significant and potent compared to the general setting they exist in, so it wouldn't really work if you wanted them to just be disposable chumps as is the default for most cyberpunk PC's.

I have been in sci-fi/cyberpunk flavoured LotW games though. The only real change is letting Craft cover technology use/hacking, and adapting the Secret Arts framework to cover engineering and hacking.
>>
>>64178476
Courtiers can also defeat someone in a fight by making them so flustered/horny they can't continue. This is RAW supported.
>>
>>64178326
>>64178476
Also it's relatively simple to divorce the "mythic china" stuff from the text and just use the rules, so you could lewd up any fitting setting if you so desired.
>>
Is the number between brackets the Chi cost of this technique? What does the Flood beneath mean?
>>
>>64179784
The bracketed number is the Destiny cost to buy the technique, the 'Flood' is just keywording to let you know the technique involves flooding a die from your river.

We're only on the planning stages for 2.0 (a full successor game) but I would like to ask what setting seems most interesting to people:

1) Magical Girls, Sentai, and Kamen Rider-types in the modern day | Modern Day Wuxia
2) Wuxiapunk - Cyberpunk if run by martial artists: fate-reading machines, auto-acupuncture systems and prosthetics made of chi-rich wood.
3) Cyberpunk - A more traditional cyberpunk setting, without the mystical elements in the other two.

Are loresheets, deeds and entanglement not explained in this file?
>>
>>64182634
RAW, there are rules for simplified enemies in terms of Minions and Lesser Legends, but in practical terms they're basically mooks and slightly tougher mooks, you need full Xia equivalents to face down PC's, and that means running a lot of extremely mechanically complicated characters in an already heavy system, which can cause fights to really drag. I've tended to just go for one vs all boss fights, small group battles or duels in my games. It helps that it's online, so we can just break each encounter into a few mini sessions during the week.

For 1.5.1, though, we're hoping to add more fleshed out rules for creating powerful and interesting NPC opponents without requiring that level of complexity, hopefully making things a lot easier on the GM and making large, full group fights more feasible and less of a slog.
>>
>>64182577
I mentioned this to you in discord but cyberpunk wuxia is totally my jazz. With CP2020 coming back with the Cyberpunk game it may be bandwagoning but it's definitely good.

You could also consider simply doing setting splats and doing both!
>>
>>64181052
1 for Nanoha
2 for a serious Wuxia system
>>
>>64182920
Deeds are explained, but we removed any Entanglement from them. In our play experience, Entanglement is a garbage heap, and Loresheets are worse, because they're poorly explained *and* poorly implemented.

Loresheets needed much more work to make them really work than we felt was required in 1.5. Balancing each one, organizing Loresheets into tiers based on their relevance to the setting, making sure you aren't spending Destiny on trap options that don't actually give you anything of mechanical benefit...

Entanglement, while a nice concept, didn't really have a place in the system. Our team had discussed making Entanglement grant only fluffy, nonmechanical benefits (like organization membership) while Destiny could buy mechanical goodies from Loresheets, while removing Entanglement from the Rank advancement scheme...

It was a big mess and one we felt it better to leave alone/cut out than try to beat it into some semblance of a working subsystem. If your game decides Loresheets are still a good idea, then by all means, plug them and Entanglement back in.

2.0 may bring them back in different forms; we're not exactly aiming to COMPLETELY take out the things that Entanglement/Loresheets represent, but they need to work better than they did.

I've done Kung-fu giant robots with it before, but that might be a low key given how ridiculous Gurren Lagann gets. Then again, you could just use increases in rank to represent that increase in power scale and amp up the fluff on everything to 11.

I just statted giant robots as Xia and had all the fighting on the mech scale. It's not a proper fit for more mechanical, crunchy mechs, but for looser super robot far that can be enough.

I have also used mechs in other games, along with other super huge bosses, statted as multiple connected Xia each with their own turn and unique attacks. The last one was a giant magical t-rex whose head, legs and tail were all unique foes in their own zone of combat.

>>
>>64188031
The arena itself was four zones, the head at the front, legs in the two middle zones and tail at the back. Knocking it back let you rotate it, moving its jaws- which had the most dangerous attacks- away from more vulnerable targets, for example. The boss, meanwhile, used its legs and tail to knockback targets towards its head, trying to hit them with its powerful, high damage bites.

In case anybody cares, there's also a successor of Legends of Wulin in the making. Even two successors based on the same mechanics but with different settings - Tian Shang [kung-fu + Journey to the West + Indian metaphysics + space + lots of acid] and Lone Wolf Fists [kung-fu + post-apocalypse].

Both things are being blogged about at http://mushroompress.blogspot.com/ and Lone Wolf Fists had a pre-alpha release at DriveThruRpg for PWYW

Homebrew kung fu? Huh. How balanced are the styles on this list, I'm curious.
>>
>>64194334

If it's by Ray of Speed, I'd recommend against it. He's got a poor sense of balance.
Zeitgeist is one of the better ones, his stuff is pretty good.

I'm going to stay quiet on my own name there, as I don't want to toot my own horn.

As balanced as anything homebrew is: some are better than others.

As >>64194499 mentioned, Ray of Speed has questionable balance sense. I think he meant Zechstyr for the better-balanced author, though.

Yes I did. Zeitgeist is a 3rd party D&D 4e adventure path a friend was talking to me about as the same time as I typed the comment.

>9) Starting Rank is 5, not 4, because WHY was Rank 5 a thing if you never played in it?

Wasn't the idea that rank 5 was for NPCs, to show the PCs already start above average?
>>
>>64178326
Mythical Chinese sex cultivation is a genre trope. Along with things like corruption. So it would probably be easier to run a lewd game.

>>64181052
I honestly kind of like 1 and 3 the best. Just because future Wuxia is almost always great. Bad ass corp bosses and underground criminal martial artists are some fun tropes in future wuxia.
>>

A friend brought my attention to Wuxia recently and I'm still trying to internalize how the system works. What order is initiative rolled in? Players first? Simultaneously by blind? In most games it wouldn't matter but in Wuxia waves can be made on initiative rolls to get extra effects, and what waves over characters are attempting could factor in to a character's decision of what waves to use.
>>
>>64195845
At a table, everyone rolls initiative at the same time and is *supposed* to decide on Waves on their own, without watching for what others are doing.

Online, it usually is supposed to work the same way.

It's *really hard* to resist the metagaming aspect of "Well NPC 1 put a really high Wave result so I *should* use my big set for Initiative so I can go first and have a chance to break that..."--in fact, it's so difficult that it's kind of an acknowledged thing that happens in my groups, rightly or wrongly.

>>64195731
I could acknowledge that, except the game already provides Minions and Lesser Legends.
>>
>>64181052
What I'd really like is to see the Nihao Honey setting from the absolutely awesome series of actual plays.
>>
>>64196486
can you give a tl;dr?
>>
>>64196025
Was there a difference between Minions, Lesser Legends, and the original rank 5?

If there was, it feels like you're taking out an option.

On top of that, if Rank is acknowledged in-setting, there's also the significant roleplay implications of the PCs being the second-lowest rank, as opposed to the lowest rank.

Maybe I'm making too much of a fuss here, but on the surface that sounds like the pettiest change on the list, like something made more for the sake of changing or arbitrary preference.
>>
>>64196645
Part of it was that rank 5, in our experience, never saw play and just wasn't very interesting, as players or as a basis for enemy stats, having almost no options and rolling six dice, which made the chance of getting multiple sets extremely low. I can understand the idea of wanting it to exist to provide context to starting PC's but it just never seemed to add any value to the game to us, and we liked the idea of making the entire rank scale worthwhile.

Is Initiative meant to be rolled every turn?
>>
>>64199571
Every round, but yes, your position in the turn order can change. It's important to be able to do that because there are a lot of things that can happen *during* the Initiative roll. Examples:

-Decide to try and move from one Zone to another
-Stare at a fighter and try to figure out secrets of their kung fu you can turn to your advantage
-Set up an action that will culminate on your turn and will affect the scene in some way (closing a door that links two Zones, for example, or attempting to set fire to the trees your opponent is standing among or nearby)

What's the rough power-level of this game? Are we talking the martial-arts limit of what a person can do with a few random ki powers for garnish (Absolver, Street Fighter), the moderate-tier wuxia and powers we're used to in the genre's film (Hero, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), or straight-up xiaxia (DragonBall, Thunderbolt Fantasy)?
>>
>>64200880
In the most literal terms, yes. Courtiers can make Secret Arts Attacks representing them social-fuing the opponent into submission. In core LotW Courtier's are actually kinda overpowered, but hopefully we've evened things out with this version.
>>
>>64201040
Moderate Wuxia with a few higher fantasy elements, kind of Street Fighter-ish in many respects.
>>
>>64201040

Depends on the rank, to an extent. A rank 1 guy has more in common with thunderbolt fantasy (Though DBZ is a bit outside of it even at rank 1. Punching hard enough to destroy a city isn't ever trivial, even at rank 1 that is still 'You had to have shit lining up perfectly' stuff.)
>>
>>64201061
What about just the usual "persuasion roll"?
>>
>>64201769
That's also a thing, the Inspire skill. Anyone can use it, although Courtiers do get mechanics for influencing people out of combat, too.
>>
>>64201769
>>64201843
Anyone can use Inspire to be persuasive. Courtiers, on the other hand, *literally* bring about behavioral changes in people via Chi Conditions. John Q. Wu can use Inspire to persuade a guard to let him pass, but a Courtier can make the guard into their best friend forever (or leave the guard a broken, weeping, guilt-ridden mess) and waltz past.
>>
>>64201941
But you can punch people into being your best friend too!

Did you find that the pace of advancement was adversely affected by the removal of entanglement? Did the plots of your games end up as convoluted and Byzantine as the creators of Wulin seemed to intend without a formalized plot tracking/expanding system?
>>
>>64203350
Even if they weren't meant to be weaker, they are. Minions and LL's are speedbumps at best, and although they can be threatening en mass, or by boosting their rank, they're not really interesting as the centerpiece of a fight unless the encounter has a particular gimmick using them. You need full Xia tier enemies to present interesting and challenging opponents to your players.

I've been in:

-3 magical girl games
-a sci fi game in a homemade universe
-2 games using plain old mythic china
-lewd "high school" stuff in a modern day setting yet the place was mostly sealed off from the real world
-a game of Dungeons: the Dragoning that used the setting but ditched the published rules in favor of LotW (GM's bias there)

And then there were 3-4 games that were planned but never got off the ground, or crashed and burned after one or two sessions.

Ahem, well.

>sci-fi game in a homemade universe
This one lasted a few months before IRL ate the GM. Internal kung fu was used more to represent equipment than spooky supernatural abilities. We were an unlikely group thrown together by "looking for work" and tasked with retrieving a science team on a lightly-colonized planet; the team had suddenly gone total comm-silent, but not before managing a brief distress call.

When we got there we eventually found them buried in a cave, with another mercenary band basically hot on our heels--and pretty clearly loaded for bear. Whatever they were coming for, it wasn't going to be good news.

The scientists had stumbled upon a relic of ancient times, the Kvasir, a sort of quasi-living or quasi-sentient nanomaterial that could communicate telepathically and assume shapes. When the other mercs triggered a partial collapse of our cave the Kvasir bonded with a party member and she became, more or less, Witchblade.

We made it off-world by curbstomping the other mercs and stealing their ship, then got tasked with infiltrating a casino on another planet and retrieving data stored there by some unfriendly faction. We...did so in just about the loudest way possible, boring a hole into the casino from outside and drilling directly to the vaults.

This is about when things got wobbly and then the game quietly went away over a holiday break.

>the DtD game
This one is a doozy, as it's still ongoing but is close to the for-real end (it's been running...almost 3 years).

DtD being as zany as it is, the party is...let's say, eclectic. I play Space Elf Samus Aran/Birdy the Mighty (genetically engineered super-soldier space police eldarin who became a Solar Exalted during gameplay). In the party is also her Lunar mate, a completely indestructible halfling werewolf spy/commando, who comes from Tranquility, a thinly veiled copy of the world from Diablo; a Promethean gynoid smuggler with retrograde amnesia who is also her starship; the disembodied time-flung Wraith of a dryad who also happens to be the Abhorsen (but we got her body back and she's slowly learning to re-acclimate to it!); and a clone of my character who is also partially an Alchemical exalted but is otherwise a starcraft medic, awakened from a cloning tube something like three years before the events of the game began.

The game has run the gamut from the Ravnica Guilds of M:tG on Sigil, to the aforementioned Diablo planet, to Iron Kingdoms worlds like Llael and Khador and Cygnar, to Star Trek villains like quori and Romulans (the latter combined with Satyxis from Iron Kingdoms).

This game, we use the LotW rules more or less straight--internal kung fu IS definitely weird supernatural stuff but also could be technology or pure skill.

This unironically sounds dope as fuck. How does being an exalted translate in the context of running through LotW? Just specific internal styles?
>>
>>64206521
In my case, it was a Loresheet with a few attendant benefits that we kind of never revisited. I'm not sure how the other players handled it, because I came into the game knowing very little about DtD and thus didn't actually pick an exaltation during chargen like everyone else did. I ended up earning it later in play.

That said, the choice of how to implement something like an exalted--specifically within DtD's context--is something best sussed out between the players and the GM, because good arguments can be made for Internal styles, Loresheets, or both together.
>>
>>64206574
Fun. Did the GM run the DtD setting straight (so to speak) as a technological-supernatural combination, or was it more run as a typical planescape cross-over?
>>
>>64167070
So I've been reading and I'm really hyped to see all these mechanics collected. I'm almost at character creation, and in reading about the base mechanics it would be really helpful to see some examples in side-boxes. I'm a little confused on the finer points and would like a couple of specific show-cases to help out; I'm sure I won't be the only one.
>>
>>64206652
Yes.

For example, my supercop modified her own power armor to include a wraithbone weave beneath the armor's outer surface that channeled mana well enough to let her pull impossible stunts, like Morph Ball mode (shunting her extra mass to the same non-dimensional space as a bag of holding).

There is an internal kung fu technique in a style on the wiki that was PERFECT for Morph Ball and I took it so fast.

Starships plied the crystal spheres and traveled the Warp between them, decked out with laser cannons, Gellar fields, and mana reactors.

The aforementioned dryad wraith PC was full-on spooky weird magical weirdness next to my PC's almost entirely technological bent.

>>64206770
We can do that. Do you have specific sections in mind that could use more examples?
>>
>>64206802
My suggestion would be to keep a minor "running example," if you know what I mean. Some of it seems fine, but there's a few unerlying concepts that are hard to grasp.

When does everyone decide what actions they're taking? On their turn? Does everyone roll, pick in secret, and then run it in order? When would you decide to try and Break a Wave; during the Initiative roll when people allocate dice for their minor actions, or during your actual turn when you execute major actions? Speaking of, what if you chose a Wave that effects someone in your zone but they move to another zone before your turn comes around? Does that action and the chosen set get wasted?

There's just a lot that I'm not quite grasping, and almost all of it has to do with the specifics of turn order. A small example for each minor section and action--especially with initiative and turn order--would go a long way.
>>
>>64206802
>power armor with a wraithbone mana-focusing weave
That's one of the most dope-nasty things I've ever read.
>>
>>64207243
Coming up to say that I support this idea. As somebody uninitiated in this game, and interested in running it for a good friend, I'd be very thankful for such examples.
>>
>>64167070
Do you guys have a Discord or something? How would we keep an eye out for following editions of 1.5 after this thread dies?
>>
>>64207243
We'll try to do a running example of a round in 1.5.1, then.

>When does everyone decide what actions they're taking? On their turn? Does everyone roll, pick in secret, and then run it in order?
You pick which actions you are taking depending on the roll--for example, according to the rules, there are things you can choose to do on Initiative, like analyzing a kung fu style, starting a Wave, and so on.

Once your turn in the initiative order comes up, you roll your Lake, and then decide what you can do with those dice you rolled.

>When would you decide to try and Break a Wave; during the Initiative roll when people allocate dice for their minor actions, or during your actual turn when you execute major actions?
Breaking a Wave happens on your turn, but only if the Wave you want to break *hasn't finished yet.* Waves finish on the turn of whomever began it; if you're faster (have higher Initiative), you can attempt to break them.

>Speaking of, what if you chose a Wave that effects someone in your zone but they move to another zone before your turn comes around? Does that action and the chosen set get wasted?
Yep. That's why I mentioned there was a metagamey aspect to setting up Waves and stuff during Initiative. There shouldn't be, but we just haven't figured out a way around it yet.
>>
>>64207702
>we'll try to do a running example
Appreciate it, thank you. I feel it will go a long way.

So to clarify, rolling for initiative is not the same as rolling for your actions on your round? Do you roll your entire Lake to decide initiative for each round, then? Isn't that somewhat wasteful, or did I miss something?
>>
>>64207930
Lots of actions are offloaded onto the initiative roll, rather than cluttering up the attack roll. It's actually really interesting, as you can use other actions on initiative for movement, assessing an opponents style or manipulating your environment. It lets you exercise a lot of interesting utility in combat without reducing your ability to straight up fight later on.
>>
>>64207930
>Do you roll your entire Lake to decide initiative for each round, then?
Yep.

>Isn't that somewhat wasteful, or did I miss something?
I guess it depends on what you mean by "wasteful." You roll your Lake for Initiative, use the sets for the actual Initiative and Waves and style analysis and etc. Then, when your turn comes up, you roll your Lake again and decide what to do with it.

GM of that game: Basically how I did it was 'Exalted are full on Xia'. Enemies that were not exalts were Lesser Legends or Minions.

>>64206652

Settingwise I played it really, really fast and loose but did very much play it supernatural/-technological combo. A lot of the stuff that ended up being notable in my game was attempting to recreate the utter insanity of the setting more than just taking it's examples of such. For example, one of the big enemies of the campaign they've been dealing with the work of has been a wraith with a blade of ice. Said wraith often took the form of an Eldarin with a goatee, a flair for disguises, necromantic bells and mind control. Goreshade, agent of the neverborn Toruk (The father of Bahamut and Tiamat). Opposing him and helping the PC is a silly Eldarin Chronomancer with messy green hair, a long scarf and a love of Jelly babies, Ossyan, high Arcanist of Craftworld Vyre.

So yeah, Dr Who, Warmachine, D&D 4e's IO, the Old Kingdom's Kerrigor, 40k's Eldar Craftworlds

The core of DtD really felt like 'Throw enough shit together that you've blatently stolen and eventually you'll end with something crazy enough that it's actually novel'. I'm not sure if I quite pulled it off at times but the players had fun at least.
>>
>>64207933

That makes a certain amount of sense. So someone should probably keep twice their Lake in d10s so they don't slow everything down by having to write down their sets and which set is being used with what actions?

While I won't gainsay bringing more dice, everybody rolls Init at the same time--if nothing else, the GM might keep a written record of the order. Players have to keep track of their other things.

You don't have to roll again until it becomes your turn (or if you get attacked in the interim). In my experience, 99% of the time you'll max out at two other things on Initiative to keep track of. Granted, I also play primarily online, which does leave a text record of things you set up.

>No Sir, I don't like it.

That's entirely fair. My intention is for 1.5.1 to reintroduce it...sort of. Basically: Letting each archetype make predictions for big world affecting stuff but making those predictions part of their own secret arts. So a warrior could make predictions about how a battle in this valley would go, while a doctor could predict that the way this city is going it the moment a sickness turns up, it will end up being a full on plague.

That way it's something that every archetype can interact with instead of 1 archetype that nobody else interacted with and it interacted with nobody.
