So after that last 'only human characters are able to have depth' posts showed up i decided that it'd be fun to spit in the face of that kind of perception by just strait up make a setting exclusively in regards to intelligence be populated by lizards just on a whim. Yuan-ti, Kobolds, Dragonborn, naga, Tortle and the like. Maybe a bit of bullywug action if we're feeling generous.

I've even got a couple of gods on the brain grill to throw by you guys Namely a rainbow serpent Gaia equivalent, an Aztecan vampire blood god who shoots blood streams out of it's eyeballs and literally just pun-pun.
>>
In a world populated only by lizard people they could easily speciate into crocodilians, chameleons, monitors, iguana, basilisk, gecko, skinks and bearded dragons.
>>
>>63632103
Well one factor that helps a lot is that when you drop "slap animal onto a human" mentality and instead just pick out lizard traits you can combine a lot of things and create a race that is more varied then humans dwarfs and elfs combined. Like you could create actual races within these lizard people and that is without even going into snakes who are just as diverse.
Also if we do touch other reptiles we can get shit like crocodilians, aquatic, desert and borrowing turtles, mammal like reptiles, mossosaurs and plasiosaurs (basically lizardfolk merfolk) and even grab gliding things without even going near dinosaurs.

Technically, Yuan-tis descend from humans and Kobolds are, in a way, somewhat dragons (which like dinosaurs, are their own thing). And Bullywugs are definitely amphibians, the fuck are you thinking?

How would such a setting even start?

Did the Dinosaur killing asteroid never come in?
>>
>>63636080
Nope it would probably different, the dinos never came around and only lizards, mammal like reptiles and crocodilemorphs stuck around and all evolved different forms of sentient things.
Could also play with body shapes a lot, like have knuckle walker turtle people that use magic, or crocodilomorths that move like pangolins, or merfolk that are actually mossosaurs.
If this thread gets working I could probably draw some of those.

If they did, a 500 million year history must have greatly affected their setting. Human history barely goes back a couple thousand years
>>
>>63636639
Well I would probably make setting different to earth since I am fan of concept of say flying islands filled with celestial lizard people, but if we go that route we could probably explore history of their civilisations for about 20000 years.
>>
>>63636750
Flying islands definitely changes things. Explorations and fortresses become very different things when you have to have wings of some sort to reach them
>>
>>63636955
Indeed, and islands allow evolution of varios species, allowing for multiple wildly different species of sentient things to be around as well as some really cool methods of transport.
>>
>>
>>63632103
So a world of scaly humans then. A different paintjob doesn't change the car.
>>
>>
>>63632103
>>
>>63632103
Well, you know how many reptilian beastfolk have shown up in D&D? This is perfectly viable.

>>63632156
Heck, there was a Dragon article that literally gave you gator-folk, gecko-folk, monitor-folk and iguana-folk as PC options.
>>
>>63637043
Without furry animals around, are most people just wearing leathers and the like?

Agriculture would be a bit different too, wouldn’t it?
>>
>>63640571
Could weae plant fibber clothes or since scales are hardy wear little clothes at all.
As for farming yeah, could be that people capture flying islands and pull them closer to get land for crops.
>>
>>63632103
>Yuan-ti, Kobolds, Dragonborn, naga, Tortle and the like.
Pro-tip: If you want to make a World about lizard people, don't even bother with this shit. If you make it about pre-established monster races then you already missed the point. Give these lizardfolk their own culture and identity.
>>
>>63640762
Let us now worldbuild different reptile societies!
>Crocodiles have a reputation of being unreadable, built upon their almost unnatural patience and stoicism. The average crocodile is highly individualistic and opportunistic, seeing the world in terms of personal gain at the moment. Thus, despite their natural skills in long term planning, their very nature prevents them from rising doing such

>>63641977
The shared disability has led them to band together. While there is still distrust between the Venomous Ones and the Constrictors, they share enough that they can tolerate each other and work together to share resources.

Snekpeople with arms or no arms?
>>
>>63633046
>>63633046
Dragons are serpents with the added bits of other terrifying creatures, and association of reptiles and amphibians is not far fetched.
>>

Hey, a sexy female lizardfolk without the need for tits. It's all in the hips.
>>
>>63642099
I would say with arms. Gives them a better silhouette and lets them handle tools.
Snakes tend to be rather peaceful creatures when not hunting, so I’d say that they frequently gather on a great sunstone when meeting with another tribe.
>>
So how would Turtle Magic work? Is it something they have to carve into their shell?
>>
I'm kinda doing something similiar, for some personal campaign stuff, here's some race ideas

>necromatic crocodile race that idealizes the concepts of ambition, personal success, and domination. Incredibly old, with their society being ruled by a handful of lich equivalents that claim to have been alive as long as the species has, helping shape their race.

>Chameleon descendants who can change their genetic structure and physical form temporarily through specific culinary dishes. Mostly tribal, their recipes are passed down via word of mouth, and there is great significance placed on individual family recipes, often offering unique powers to that bloodline.

>Swamp dwelling pyromantic frogs who worship the bright blue flames produced by the ancestral swamps of their homeland. Due to past dabblings with dark uses of this sentient flame, they may not touch moonlight.

>A monstrous race of lizardmen known as the Spawn. Living only to consume, the life cycle of a Spawn is incredibly strange due to their origins as a servitors race of the frog people's experiments. They may consume any and all matter, organic or inorganic, and break it down into materials used to create more Spawn. However, they live only for 24 hours, and all matter used to create them will revert to it's original form upon the Spawn's death.

>Undersea turtles who mine veins of gems and precious materials from incredibly deep below the surface. Utilizing special engineering to alleviate pressures inside the mines, they tie decorative anchors to their shells to reach the mines entrance. Due to the sturdiness and shape of the shell, they may safely withstand the pressures of the depths while inside.

Lizardfolk should be the most widely spread species and be innocuous enough to inhabit pretty much every conceivable background in every part of the world in some capacity. Sort of like canon dnd’s representation of the humans.

White/Silver Dragonborn Arctic & Antarctic empires should be a thing. A big nasty pit of Byzantine political hellscape who’s immense court corruption, decadence and mismanagement has somehow managed to continue this way unchecked for far longer then it ever really should have due to always having barbarian outsiders to focus on and the fact that nobody else can actually live in the Arctic.

I actually really like that idea of the two cold affiliated dragonborns having a civilization just sort of chilling (hah) up in the Arctic in this weird stasis of infighting and administrative inefficiencies never actually being in danger from outside forces really tickles my fluffboner.

Should Chromatic vs Metalic stuff show up? I.e do the chromatic Dragonborn types get shit for being related to the asshole dragons while metallics get to act smugly for their relations/role model of the flying metallic paragons.

Silver dragonborn in the arctic exclusively make up the empire's nobility by law and below that one's general well-offness goes up if you are a silver. Ostrisized whites

while the really poor whites like to persue a lucrative opportunity to migrate south to a less utterly suffocating situation or raid countries to the south which is a constant issue for the northern parts of nations not on the top of the world since the North's internal politics sure as hell don't give actually give a shit when there's important decisions to be made about what shape of ice sculptured urn is the most traditional and therefore best and how that latest rumors of dragon sightings are cosmologically signifigent followed by another court massacre when somebody's honor is thrown into question.

(As an example of course)

Actually, we should totally go about making individual situation write-ups of each of the dragonborn variants in this settimg which draw from the dragon types that they originate from and expand on it.

She's a Yuan-Ti Pureblood, which are intended to be more human than Yuan-Ti, as they serve as spies infiltrating human societies for their more serpentine masters (Yuan-Ti hierarchy is ranked by how snake-like your caste is; the top dogs are multi-headed snakes). Generally, Purebloods are really just humans with snakelike eyes or a few stray scales here and there, deformities easily concealed with makeup or magic, but anyone with taste will mix it up (the next rank in their society is naga-like, so the distinction is still clear).

Dragonbourne living at the North and South Poles in a similar manner I assume to the snek people from Centaur Worries. An unending bureaucracy that sometimes has some of them striking out into the Lands of other races

Necromantic Croc-folk that I really don't have too much for. How important is family and government to them?

The three major groups are Snek-People, Lizardfolk that make up the larger population and closest to our Human equivalent, and !Kobolds that would work as the Mammal-like reptiles here.

No turtles? There should totally be turtle people.
Incidentally, my take on reptilefolk characteristics based on actual reptile behaviour:
> Crocodiles: Exactly the characters people stereotypically assing to reptiles; cold, calculating, and infinitely patient. Highly intelligent but you wouldn't know from looking at them as they tend to just sit around quietly waiting for an opportunity to do something.
> Turtles: Dwarves. Slow, tough, and stubborn as hell. If a turle decides to do something, they don't care what's in the way. Also incredibly long-lived.
> Lizards: Humans of the setting; lizards come in such a variety of types and behaviors that it's hard to categorize them under one set of traits.
> Snakes: I don't know, real snakes strike me as pretty damn derpy. They're not exactly the smartest even among other reptiles, is what I'm saying. Like, trying to eat yourself level of dumb.

Snakes could be your halflings. Sneaky, goofy and not normally very physically imposing, they are stereotyped as hungry and lazy, being essentially heads attatched to long stomachs.

None the less, although none would admit it even the greatest of Crocodilian chiefs would dare not underestimate a snake assassin.

Just that they dont pair bond as strongly as humans do. The idea of marriage is alien to them, the closest would be a pair that enjoy each others company a lot.
Males dont compete over females and females dont compete over males, mate selection is done at a whim and fairly casually. Getting pregnant is not as great a hassle as it is for humans as the eggs are much easier to handle than live birth, and the tribe takes a lot of the pressure of child rearing.

Are dragonborn a trademarked name? I had this idea for them being a sort of youth stage of regular dragons, or a growth path they can take or something, the general jist being that a dragonborn if it lives long enought will become a proper drsgon

I had something for dragons. One breed would be very much like the stem mammals, one would be more dinosaur like and then the last would be more serpent like, I'm not sure which breed should be wich. Obviously the serpent dragons would be the imperial dragons but do stem mammals fit better for chromatic or metallic?

Take a dragon with it's long neck and barrel like body. Then bend, squish, and break it into a more humanoid shape. The scales are very small, resembled more like human skin with a condition. The snout is flattened to resemble more of a human face, the barrel body is but more upright. The arms and legs are articulated like a humans. Also remove the wings and tail. It may or may not have a more simian gait.

>White & Silver dragonborn are the only folks able to live with two 'truly' demographically isolated populations with them being uniquely suited to the cold. The north have a ruling silver uperclass downtrodding on the whites while the south has Whites Downtrodding on the silvers.

How about this for a writeup on Red dragonborn.

Dragonborn Reds:

In a near-universal declaration by their own oral tradition even after a millennium of drift the Red Dragonborn legends declare that their peoples were hatched from stones of volcanic mountains to do battle and earn glory.

When the world was young Red Dragonborn emerged and ran rampant across the world possessed by a seemingly compulsive need to violently attack everything. They sweep across the world and brought kingdoms to ash before finally being stopped (Insert reasons here) and shattered the reds into clans which are now scattered across the world. Only the ones in more remote and inhospitable areas.

Red dragonborn are commonly and very understandably viewed with much suspicion by the other races, they (or at least the ones who haven't already charged headfirst into battle against the rest of the world single handedly) are slowly adapting to living in proximity with other species, with the occasional trickle of their kind making their way into other civilizations after being dismissed for being weaker then aceptable or humiliated and fleeing. Red dragonborn as a whole prefer to canabalize elements of the a local culture's value into their own versions of it. A dragonborn clan in proximity to a culture with the red Dragonborn obsession for acquiring ever greater personal renown, wealth and power changing to suit the location.

This thread might like this.
A while back I tried a similar worldbuilding exercise similar to OP where the races were all reptilian or at the very least reptile-like, settled on a world where the great dying didn't hit quite as hard so dinosaurs didn't come so massively into prominence but still fill many niches. The three races I decided on were
>Kobolds
tiny dwarf-like synapsid people famous for metalwork and mining exploits
>Dinosauroids
goofy lizard men with a psuedo roman society >Orcs
highly derived tool-using Goyolcephale drawn to anything shiny.

This setting didn't go anywhere but I liked the orcs enough to consider them for other settings as non-playable mooks. Pic related, it's a not so great sketch of them.

Take each dragon type and copy-paste them into their designated Dragonborn variant.

There, dragonborn species done.

>Only partially sarcasm.

>>63717195
Link it dude. We need to figure out what this world's smol lizards are about.

Personally i was thinking of supporting a seafaring & colonialism angle with the kobolds mastering blackpowder guns (and violently trying to suppress anyone else having it) which let them oppress much bigger & stronger species on the coasts.
>>
>>63717195
I can see Kobolds become even more industrial than Dwarfs are if left to their own devices.

>>

We’d need an actual map first & a better senses of what the demographics are like.

How about these:

The Lizardfolk umbrella make about 20% of the population overall while Dragonborn makes up about 10% which is all split pretty evenly between the dozen or so classic colour/metal types they can be associated with.
>>
>>63718377
Actually, best parental care out of all reptiles goes to skinks, in particular one species of skinks which has females give live birth (the mammal way) and look after the young as it grows up. Basically they are social lizards and best base for a matriachy since females there are larger.
>>
>>63711214
Yeah, that sounds like a snek. They're not particularly smart, fast, or strong (constrictor snakes are very strong, but a lack of limbs limits the ways they can use that strength), but they're highly adapted ambush predators so they're extremely stealthy. And they're natural escape artists to boot.

A snakefolk assassin would be a pretty terrifying thing to have coming after you. Able to slip past guards, fit through tight spaces like small windows or ventilation ducts, and regardless of whether it's a venomous or a constrictor snake, they'll well equipped to kill you even when unarmed.
>>
>>63722558
They would also be perfect as snakes are rather unassuming. They just stick around in one place when you see them and just smoothly slither away.
>>

How many colors of Dragonborne should there be? Can all the varieties of Snekfolk interbreed? Is it the same for the Lizardfolk and our Gorgonopsid equivalent?
>>
>>63726056
I think that different races of Snekfolk should be able to breed. I think it makes sense.
>>
>>63716806
Decent, but how about this alternative.

(More a baseline writeup for Dragonborn as a whole)
Dragonborn are a highly diverse group and somewhat proportionate in differences derived from pedigrees; Dragonborn typically appear similar to dragons of their derivative nature, as Dragonborn always resemble at least one form of dragon, and they’ll inherit similar abilities and tendencies as their progenitor dragon type.

Chromatic Dragonkin, having an evil patron goddess since the dawn of time it is not suprise that Chromatics gravitate to revere Tiamat.

Prideful and Imposing, the Dragonborn that inhabit the world of Lizard-verse usually share a few traits and ideals among the types, but all of them have an appreciation for strengh, as well as for great wealth, something they share with true dragons, Dragonborn tend to hold a taste for the more precious things in life, such as rare solitude, unique privileges & the rush of combat, and bonds between close allies. They also happen to believe in furthering the potential of their powerful bodies, believing that honing their natural( or magical) power and fortitude is one thing that makes them exceptional.
To other races, Dragonborn believe they are superior for what could be mightier than a dragon? and therefore usually can either come off as magnanimous or condescending, with reactions varying. Individuals, are usually found in all cities in some capacity or another. The large majority though are nomadic barbarians,

There’s officially 10 variants of them running around there’s the five main chromatic types & the five corosponfinv Metallic types) frankly with what we’re already making out of the Dragonborn. (Red roaming barbarian hordes, Silver & White polar empires, Golds taking up holy & legally authoritative positions & being massively entrenched into law just off what we have so far) Ten Dragonborn types is already a plenty large enough basis for the race as a whole.

Speaking of snakes, oddly enough the most snek-ky snake race from an RPG that I've seen are Maiesta's lamias.
They have a pretty interesting view on relationships where they consider choosing a reproductive partner in a purely businesslike manner, usually arranging pairings between suitable males and females by their parents. If you fall in love with somebody else that's fine as long as you fulfill your obligations and make some eggs with your assigned mate.
Like actual snakes their feeding instincts are also built around an ambush predator lifestyle, where they might go weeks without food, which causes problems in a more developed society where food is always available because their instinctual response is to eat all the things right now in case it'll be a month before the next meal.

The old metropolis of Quarikz is reputed as a Land of the Dead. This ancient Metropolis ruled by dark magicians has long since collapsed and over the milenium have sunken into the swamps that had since overtook the valley. Today standing atop the old metropolis is the crocodilians tribe who have adopted the same name. The great tribe of Quarikz obsessively obsessively works to uncover more dark magic hidden under their feet feet and are rightly feared by all outsiders. It is comman to tell naughty hatchlings in the regions that surround that place that they will be whisked off to Quarikz if they do not behave.

Many stories have spread over the centuries from survivors describing the unholy place where the dead hold sway over the living and where an unassuming exterior of savage crocodilians persue evil magic with a clinical outlook and a thourgorg disregard of morality.

Undead are a common sight everywhere in the confines of the old city as they serve the Quarikz as troops and servants for the living.

Op, you seem to be forgetting one of the most influential scaled ones around....The Reptilians!

This intellectually oriented, frail and gaunt bodied race of ‘lizards’ are a people who originate from crashed spaceships and who’ve generally lost sight of their past identity in the thousands of years since the first of their kind arrived on this world.

Their frail bones struggle to hold up their body’s weight (almost as if they’re adapted to a less strong gravity environment) They much prefer urban lifestyles where don’t have to work such hard labour.

They have had a rough relation with other species and are the regular subject of predgudices because of it. Their appearances being so uncannily different from the world at large with their black pupiless eyes, lack of tail and their smooth skin. A majority of them attempt to disguise themselves as more standard lizards in everyday life instead.

Highly inteligent, quick with their clawless hands and physically weak they frequently work in things of little physical stress and typically die young at around 25 over health complications. Also telepathy maybe?

Reptiloids physically are the most comparable to Human senior citizens (Whats a human?) out of all the species. Their frailty extends to climate as well. Salt burns, heat blisters, and cold scars The race's frailness and greatly disliked status make truly independent groups of Reptiloids quite uncommon. They almost exclusivly commune in cities and avoid physical labor like the plague(which they are also suseptible to) A cargo box that a dragonborn might heft over ttheir shoulder a Reptiloid could break under the weight of.

Some Reptiloids choose to cultivate their double lives under faked identities non-Reptiloid identities.

All to often by blind luck a city gets thrown into disarray when a recently deceased figured is revealed to have been a reptiloid wearing a dead lizard's hide all along which subsequently results in lynchings which drive other Reptiloids into hiding. Some nation's Reptiloids are driven entirely into hiding where they use their telepathic links to organize, hide and walk in public under false hides 100% of the time in public.
>>
>>63751267
With such disadvantaged physicality, survive off being nimble of hand & quick of wit...and by being psychics.

Reptilioid groups form hivemind connections with each other over large areas. Each city of Reptiloid Among themselves, reptiloids are friendly and trusting but rarely do they ever actually need to be in proximity to each other. All Reptiloids are constantly and receiving a live report of the the tone and general thoughtspace of the collective Reptiloid population in an area and can communicate telepathically in their dreams.

Reptilioid have their senses of the community be formed in this mindscape of telepathic dreams where they can contact people akin to a radio antenna for brains. Because contacting a person in their dreams is often viewed with extreme distaste they mostly do so among themselves.

To outsiders their abnormality makes them be spoken of as 'others' that pry into the memories of people, using their victims' own knowledge, experiences, and fears to undermine their victims' sanity and this perception has since shifted into a greater paranoia of them being body snatchers who worm their way into leadership to puppet nations for their own evil gain. These legends have actually begun to accumulate some truth to them with many a Reptilioid enclave actively working to do just that.

Skin frills, spiked backs, long muzzles, bone crests, platigrade & detrigrade legs, rough hides, smooth hides. The most social crocodiles are the ones from the Nile. They have strict hierarchies based on size.

They like to bask and sleep close to each other which makes them safer, specially because they can be rather clumsy outside of water.

While parents do feel compelled to protect their hatchlings, this instinct lasts shortly. Crocodiles are opportunistic predators and will eat smaller crocodiles, including their own offspring. Crocs learn not to kill other crocs their own size by fighting their siblings and hurting themselves in the process.

Pitvipers are probably the reptiles that care best for their young. The babies hunt for themselves but hide behind their mom which guards them. They part ways after the first shedding.

For real good parenting you should probably go with dinos. Since they were more bird-like and birds are generally the best dads in the animal kingdom and are pretty romantic also.

Alligators also protect their young until they're old enough to fend for themselves.
Being caring parents is definitely the exception in the reptile world. Usually you at most get the mother guarding the eggs before they hatch, and often they just abandon the eggs after hiding them somewhere.

How different are crocodiles and alligators, beyond the superficial physical distinctions we teach ourselves to tell them apart in pictures? I've seen it said they're as distinct from one another as gorillas are from humans, but that sounds like a stretch to me. I've heard crocs tend to be more aggressive and gators more cautious.

>Floating Fortress
>Turtles
The major religion of the Turtles states that their race was created upon a great floating isle, which was grown upon the shell of a great sea Turtle. This God had grown lonely in its travels and made creatures in its image to give it company and friendship. One current Tortise Priest has claimed to have been shipwrecked upon it and talked to the God, declaring that all races were born from its benevolence and have an equal right to belong. A rival priest, who also claimed a meeting, is preaching how the ise is stratified and only the holiest (IE, devout Turtles) can live on the peak.

There has been a bit of heated conflict between these denominations.
>>
>>63794734
Other Religions:

There have been some ancient texts suggesting that the whole of the Reptilians once saw themselves as superior beings defended from the heavens. While some of the sect may still exist, the current prevailing belief is that they were rejected from that place due to them not being a part of this world, and so must earn their way to paradise by becoming a true creation of this world. It is this belief, shame in appearance and wish to become worthy, that Reptilians disguise themselves as other races.
Of course, it isn’t universal. Some disguise themselves because other races treat them better, while others do so because their parents did so.
For all, it is a great taboo for another to see their true form. How they react to that taboo being broken varies from person to person.
>>
>>63793224
I believe that was mentioned for snakes earlier in this thread as well. Maybe the crocs are seen as patient to the point of laziness instead. Besides, the other reptiles can't really say anything about that, sunning themselves all the time.
>>
>>63800088
The sun would be a prominent point of worship in all their religions. Granted, it’s common in human religions as well, but that’s beside the point.
>>
>>63800088
However, a lot of the other races can be fairly active in warmer climates. So the Crocs being lazy even on the hottest days would be seen as a bit unusual.

Sounds nice...but STOP I've got something better before you start tossing turtle gods into the mix.

>Turtle spiritualists in their monasteries preach, refine and practice their 'infinite tower' cosmology a widely believed (among turtles) cosmological structure who's proponents suggest there are in fact infinite identical worlds of increasingly large scale stacked on top of each other. Because the 'infinite tower' is founded on the teachings of and most strongly believed among circles of turtle monks the cosmology is often symbolized as a tower of turtles standing on top of each other or "Turtles all the way down" as both hecklers & believers like to say.
>>
>>63800088
>>63800647
The difference between snakes and crocs is that while the latter seem like they're not doing anything, they're actually very intellligent and probably observing you the whole time, waiting for something to happen that they should react to. Snakes just kind of sit there until something stumbles right up to them, at which point they react. Which is why most snakebites result from somebody accidentally stepping onto a snake.
>>
>>63803162
That actually sounds like the logical conclusion of their world being on the back of a god.
>>
>>63803853
That's what I was thinking. Maybe croc-people are patient instead of lazy, or at least stereotyped as such by the other races, while the snakes are more likely to actually BE lazy.

I don't know, it's late and I'm tired. Goodnight /tg/.
>>
>>63803880
Snakes are also very quick to act whenever they encounter a problem, so Snekfolk would likely be the most proactive in solving a problem so they can go back to being lazy.
>>

>>
>>63807164
Plenty of lizards eat plants, so I don't see why not. In dominions there's Not!Egyptians who are herbivorous lizards, with a slave caste of carnivores. Later on down the line they revolt though.

>>

Congratulations, you entirely missed the point of the thing you were arguing about

nonhuman characters have limited depth because they're BEING PLAYED BY HUMANS who have limitations on their ability to empathize with fictional creatures. They will always be a human playing something else
>>
>>63812979
Your arguement is flawed, cause you have confused “depth” with “relating”. It’s a similar fallacy to saying villains don’t have depth because those writing them aren’t villains.
Relating to them, on the other hand, can be said to be difficult because their reactions can sometimes need to be exaggerated for us to understand them. We can similarly understand villains, but not relate to them.

Also, your claim that non-human characters have less depth than human characters has been disproven by so many cartoons, books, and movies that it’s hilarious. If anything, I’d Say it’s easier to ad depth to a non-human than a human.

Beings representative of primal forces of nature like dinosaurs and more european dragons but bound to the stigma closely tied to both of being closer to mindless savagery than civilization, and when they do have civilization it usually has ties to civilizations the everyman tends to attribute to these sort of ideas, like the mesoamerican cultures, despite this not being wholly true. Not how I write them in my own setting, but I can sorta get why people do it. If you have a particular dislike it, play with it, explore the aspects of these cultures often overshadowed by their religious practices, and perhaps make uneasy parallels to the religious practices of more "civilized" cultures.
>>
>>63814127
I’ve never really understood how Lizardfolk are seen as primitive and mindless, while the most common culture for them is in the style of the Mayans or Aztecs. One is the civilization who figured out the stars better than anyone, and the other had several cities and a centralized religion controlling it all.
When did that even first start?
>>
>>63815017
It’s from Warhammer. For the casual observer, the Lizardfolk look like they barely understand the concept of mudhuts. Even the Skaven have some kind of advancement in comparison.

That’s why for most Lizardfolk, you can barely scrape by with a more advanced Crocodile Dundee

I kinda want the turtles to use catapults in order to hurl themselves from one floating island to the next (pic related).
Seems kinda goofy & fitting considering they're probably the most sluggish out of all the standard species.
>>
>>63820458
I doubt it would be useful as an action of transport since most Turtles should know how to swim. And they are quite fast in the water.
However, it could be used as a drive breaking tactic. Hurling turtles over the walls so they can open the gates and let the armies storm in.
>>
>>63813873
Culture, religion, civilization and architecture are all human things. Giving them to an animal character isn't making a good "non-human" character, on the contrary you just humanize that character more. So OP and all this thread proved that OP is wrong and cannot make a good character without recurring to human characteristics and archetypes that makes us feel represented by them.
>>
>>63822264
Now your arguement is flawed because you’re arguing an unproven absolute. And arguing it in a way that confuses “being human” with “being a Homo Sapiens”. Humanizing something is a term for giving them emotions we can relate to.
Emotionwise, there are multiple in both us and the animal kingdom that would most likely be in other sapient creatures due to how useful they are in evolution and brain power. Group based mentalities make civilization possible, teaching the young means they’re more likely to survive which brings on culture, a better built shelter means you are safer from the elements and thus brings on architecture. Religion comes down to behaviors for the mental benefit instead of physical, which would end up with even more kinds of variety than there already are on earth.
So no, the OP is not wrong in saying that non-human characters can have just as much depth as human characters. It’s all about our ability to relate to them and empathize. And any character we can’t do that with is a boring one.

The first Turtlefolks were spawned by turtletera the Titan turtle. By and large the oldest and largest of the giant turtles it wanders the world.

This great turtle lived for as long as It did by never venturing to the land and instead only ever walking over the sea. Alas while it grew ancient and mighty in this state the turtle was envious of the land for being so much less empty than the seas. The turtle spawned the first turlefolk and commanded them learn of the world and to return and teach it of what they discover.

In the ages since then turtles have spread across the world and through the ages their patron turtle god has insisted on having them constantly acquire knowlage to teach it. Turtles maintain an immense library-city on their god’s back which they read to their god on a daily basis.
>>
>>63827373
This whole turtle business is confusing.
True turtles don't walk in water, they swim.

Tortoises and box "turtles" are the terrestrial models.
>>
>>63827373
>Turtleterra the titan turtle.

Hmmmm...I wonder how you came up with that name for the turtle.

Really pokes my monshmellows.

>>63827923
Well obviously the turtle is so big that it counts as a tectonic plate.

More seriously this origin story gives a great foundation & unite a lot of what people seem to be pushing for turtles. Plus it opens up the idea of there being moving island colonies which will always be cool.
>>
>>63827373
Change the name and that sounds great!
A turtle so large that it can walk in the shallower parts of the ocean is quite a good myth.
>>
>>63829064
>>63827373
How about ‘Great A’Terra’ In reference to the diskworld turtle or ‘Materruin’ in reference to the turtle beam guardian from the dark tower.

Also I formally suggest that ‘Turtle’ and ‘tortoise’ be split. Turtles and their variety are the actual race of turtle/tortoise people of the setting while *Tortoise* should be the name of the beastial giants that the turtle’s self declared god is a part of. Sort of like Dragonborn compared to the Dragons.

Oh and by the way: POST LIMIT REACHED. Somebody needs to start a new thread.
