It's been too long. Let's have a thread about the surprise hit race of /tg/, the Ratfolk - and their obscure cousins the Rabbitfolk! What is your preferred way to use ratfolk/rabbitfolk in your setting as a PC race, anons? Why do you like them so much? And why is Kiguri's artwork for female ratfolk so hot?

In a setting that's using the "alien spaceships crashed on a fantasy world" element from old-school Sword & Sorcery (see in D&D: Expedition Beyond the Barrier Peaks, Temple of the Frog, Tale of the Comet, Blackmoor), how viable is it to have ratfolk be an alien race stranded by the crashing of the ancient spaceship, and thus the most technologically advanced race on the planet?

At least make the boobies abdominal, if we are going down this road at all.

Isn't that kind of what Pathfinder does? Apparently there's a whole bunch of them living on the setting's Mars analogue, and they're all about guns and bombs and things like that.
>>
>>63018295
Implementing these is a noblebright setting, probably played in 5e, it's all my group will play.
Mousefolk (called scurries) and ratfolk (called skulks) fall more on the human side, looking like halflings with mouse/rat ears, whiskers, teeth, eyes, and tails, but the ability to transform into large mice/rats more fully.
Mechanically speaking they'll probably be Small-sized variants of the 5e Eberron Shifter, with longer-term transformations (1 hour default) and possibly Tiny size while transformed, or just the ability to squeeze through smaller spaces.

Mostly I've found furry porn or monstergirls as well because I wanted something a LITTLE sexual/humanish (I guess?) because their whole thing is they have an aura of harmony and placidity and relaxation about them, lure you in and get you drunk, then eat you or something.
Anyway I'll dig through my stuff and see if I have anything to actually contribute.

The Shin'hare's basic schtick is that they're cute little bunnyfolk... who are a mashup of North Korea and Imperial Japan with a dash of Communist China.

They believe they have a manifest destiny to conquer the entire world, and they consider all other life expendable - fit only to be slaves and food. They place no value on their own lives, to the point that not only are "human wave tactics" their go-to military strategy, they literally breed babies by the dozens to slaughter them at birth in blood magic rites to produce enchanted arms and armor for their social elites. They also practice necromancy, too.

My own setting, Triskelion, features rabbitfolk - tentatively named "El-ahfrahrah" until I come up with something better - as a race of fey-created warriors, essentially Redwall's hares with something of a Celtic cast rather than a British Army cast. They're cunning, fearless, boisterous and love to fight, drink and eat. There is some sexual weirdness going on, because they're a fey-created race, but that's not important to what they do in the setting.

Ironically, I'm having a harder time finding a place for the setting's ratfolk; all I have is a creation myth:

There was once a goblin archfey named Raxivort, a paranoid and wheedling creature who secured her powers through treachery, deceit, base opportunism and the prioritization of her own skin above all else. The only beings that trusted her and considered her friend were a band of rats, whom she had rescued from predators in the wilderness. They loved their bigger friend, and eagerly sought to help her, but she was merely using them, and the band began to die in droves as she sent them into danger for her own ends.

In the end, the rats turned on her, denouncing her as a traitor, and brought her down. As they lapped up her blood, they grew and grew, until now they stood upright like goblins, or perhaps hobgoblins. They bought peace with Raxivort's head on a stick, and since those days, they have remained true to themselves; loyal to their kin, generous with their friends, but vengeful to their enemies.

But in drinking Raxivort's blood, some of her taint entered their souls, and now every good rat wrestles with Raxivort's little voice in their head, still whining and pleading, coaxing them to be selfish, cowardly and vicious. Not every rat can resist her urgings...

We didn't have then as anything but a stand-in for goblins at first. The party sort of adopted one for a while that we'd captured after a fight, but that one turned on them. When one character died, the player wanted their next to be a ratfolk so I let her make up their general racial history and culture (as I do with most races) so long as it fit what we knew so far. She took some parts from skaven, some from goblin, and threw in some stuff of her own that made them stand out- and even gave me some more ideas for enemy types to throw at them.

She made them voodoo-wielding super-communists that cared little for the other races other than what they could take from them. Her character had gotten kicked out of her warren and wanted to prove she was good enough to create her own.
>>
>>63020948
Ironically, I seem tlo keep pairing up ratfolk and rabbitfolk in my settings. My older setting, a dieselpunk by way of dungeonpunk high magic pulp fantasy, has rabbitfolk and ratfolk cultures too.

The rabbitfolk, or "Haffuns", are rifle-toting ranchers and farmers with a traditional leadership based on matriarchal druids and a culture more or less shaped around the American Midwest.

The ratfolk, called "Vermis", are cheerfully anarchistic refugees from the hobgoblin empire's magitek equivalent to toxic waste dumps, where they evolved from common rats. They have a knack for mad science and for cobbling together magitek from garbage, sort of like a non-evil Clan Skryre by way of Mad Max motif. Also, they're semi-amazonian, because there are more females than males, they're extra protective of their offspring because most of their children die at birth, and they're very prone to physical mutations both naturally and because one of their religions is ratty transhumanism and so they're big on upgrading themselves with magitek and fleshcrafted body mods.

>>
>>63021361
That's kind of why I made them both. I'm still not sure how I went from the Quietus to the Triskelion, but so long as the latter is getting help on a forum somewhere (and that one anon is waiting for their human on rabbitfolk smutfic), I guess the Quietus just has to sit on the back burner.

Mind you, I would happily work on both settings' ratfolk and rabbitfolk here if anons were interested, I just don't think they are.

The Haffuns and Vermis are all but figured out - you can see them in the doc below, though I'd welcome feedback on stuff I've missed adding or could stand to add - so... I don't know, maybe list up what I have figured out for their Triskelion counterparts and that'd help anons point out where/how I can take things with them?

Stuff in spoilers is Mature Audiences Only; it doesn't get brought up unless the group can handle it.

El-Ahfrahra
>Spawn of a Summer Archfey that was trapped in a rabbit's body as part of a feud.
>Small sized, but huge hearts.
>"What is best in life? To face the greatest challenges with a laugh, to hone your fighting skills to their peak, to be loyal to kith and kin, to be true to your word, to eat to excess, drink to excess, make love as often as you wish, and to die gloriously!"
>Despite valuing courage above all others, recognize that there's a difference between bravery and stupidity. (Not everyone gets the memo, though.)
>Sharpness of mind is as important as strength of arm.
>Prefer to trade mercenary work for goods and food; manual labor is less "heroic".
>Huge regard for chefs, brewers, anyone who prepares food.
>Are NOT vegetarians; some evil warrens or individuals will even eat other sapient races.
>Basically take the dwarven niche of "small, boisterous, loyal warrior people".
>Will fight alongside just about anyone; a comrade is a comrade, no matter their shape, size or disposition.
>Tend to get very offended if you call them "cute". In the right circumstances and with the right person, though, that's not so much a problem.
>Big on tattoos, piercings, mohawks, hair/fur dyes, and otherwise looking tough.
>Basically, picture a Redwall Hare, with an optional skirt-chasing streak, and you got them in a nutshell.
>Are considered an all-male race, but can fall pregnant too; they just don't see that as making them any less manly. Sex is often a struggle to determine who risks getting pregnant.

"Xvarts" (Hey, I stole Raxivort's name already...)
>Deliberately avert the cliche of the ratfolk as a filthy, treacherous, backstabbing thief.
>Some do live down to that stereotype, but these are disliked by their kin.
>Strong vengeful streak.
>...That's basically it.
>>
For the morbidly curious as to where that spoilered entry in the El-ahfrahra came from... spoilered to protect weak constitutions...

Originally, they were just based on Redwall Hares; boisterous, braggadocious, macho types, with a connection to a really macho jock type Archfey. Then, somebody spoke up and suggested that maybe, if they were going to be so masculine and macho, I should invoke some elements from Tu'er Shen.

For those who don't know their Chinese mythology, that's the rabbit god of homosexuality. No, seriously: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tu%27er_Shen

This was then followed by a tangent on the existence of a hentai doujin in which the planned invasion and conquest of humanity's women by a race of trappy, mpreg-breeding bunnyboys from the moon is thwarted by the advance scouts instead screwing up and ending up the pregnant playthings of a human man.

Folks seemed to find both of these things interesting, so ultimately I said "what the hell, let's see if it can't be done in a serious way" and, well, the El-ahfrahra as they stand today came to be.
>>
>>63019600
Here 's my first pass at creating them. I'm also considering adding a tree-dwelling squirrel subrace based on Ratatoskr, who work as messengers. Gotta have this ready for players on Saturday so feedback appreciated.

I also need to decide on a name, "rodentfolk" is a placeholder.

As a big fan of squirrelfolk, personally, I'd recommend that you add them - they make a nice little variant and add some variety. I can't suggest a better name for the race, alas, because naming things is always problematic for me.

Now, critique... Now, I'm not sure what the general consensus is on Shifters from the Wayfinder's Guide, but, to me, these look flavorful and reasonably balanced. Meek is a particularly unique weakness; racial weaknesses are uncommon in 5e, but I feel it's on the same level as Sunlight Sensitivity.

Honestly both the explanations of them are really fun. I'm still gonna read that doc if I get a chance, but I'm liking this. Giving me some inspiration for the fey assholes I'm throwing at my group on a few small points anyway, since I'm not in the habit of jacking too much shit from my fellow DMs.

Oh, I have an entire thread dedicated to my Triskelion setting here on /tg/ at the moment. The GDoc for it is linked there. Sadly, the first draft of racial fluff for the El-ahfrahra is locked on the forum where the setting came to be, because it's down for maintenance at the moment and I didn't save it to the doc. The smutfic is roughly 1/3rd written. Can't predict when I'll finish.

Also, I didn't think the El-ahfrahra would be that much use to you, since your rabbitfolk are evil man-eating fey and mine are helpful fey dwarves, but glad that you seem to like them. ;p

Any ideas on how I could start fleshing out my rendition of xvarts?

Because the Great Horned Rat wants Skaven to only seek his affection and the possibility of waifus would jeopardize this?

Hmm, kind of think of it all the races in Warhammer with dramatically less females have a matriarchal bent. Fimir and trolls most notably. For Fimir and Trolls, these females are also hyper-intelligent and hyper-magical for their kind. But we never see any Skaven females...

Is the horned rat afraid that magical, intelligent rat-waifus will usurp his control over society?
>>
>>63025868
...That's actually a really interesting idea.
>>
So, honest question; do anons feel it makes sense to have a ratfolk culture in which females outnumber the males, and so males are the political leaders whilst the females are pushed into the dangerous/labor-related fields, since females are now expendable through sheer numbers and the fecundity of an individual female?

I mean, if one female can produce 6-18 new females in one litter, it doesn't matter so much if five or six females die, but if she only produces 1-2 males in every 10 litters, well, you want to keep the males safe, right?

I'm making up the numbers here, but it hopefully gets my point across.
>>
>>63023590
Well, there's certain parts of my rabbits' culture I hadn't really thought about yet, what little of it there is to consider at the time being anyway because they are fey after all. On the other hand, they definitely SHOULD have some aspects about their communities and whatnot, and I've been thinking about different angles for them- even if they are wicked man-eating fey monsters. Certainly the notion that from an outsider's perspective they might appear more "chaotic good" than anything else- boisterous, good-natured, friendly, and inviting. In reality, they might treat people quite well for months at a time, sheltering them until such a time that it suits them to suddenly not. Might keep the women, not sure, eat the men... I've got some ideas, but they threaten to start getting a little, I dunno, magical realmy? Certainly not my thing, I just want there to be facets about them that are truly unsettling, but I'm aware everything is someone's fetish somewhere.

For the xvarts, if you're going for something where these ratkin aren't the dirty backstabbing types, you could go for an angle where they're more lawful and just. They might be ratfolk, but their culture could have developed away from what we normally would think ratkin would be like. Maybe they're even still sneaky and stealthy and all that stuff, but are more like guerilla warriors and expert scouts than rogues and thieves- but their natural aptitude for the skills shared between the two archetypes makes them good at either or both if some happen to go with the latter route.

Perhaps a while ago, they WERE filthy sneakthieves, but political/cultural/whatever things changed and now the reason they're so hard on those ratkin that DO pursue those career paths is because they feel the constant need to prove to the rest of the world that they're not like that anymore.
>>
>>63025959
Potentially, though there'd be things to consider, such as how the females are rotated out of their jobs for breeding purposes (if it's government-mandated and not just "This female and this male fell in love and got married and now she has babies now and again). Also what's to keep the women from deciding to change the culture if the men are so low in number. Deific mandate? Cultural tradition? Etc. With good explanations, I could definitely see it.
>>
Here's a weirder question; given ratfolk work so well with mad science/fleshcrafting/magitek, is there a way to make it plausible that ratfolk society could punish males who commit "serious crimes" by transforming them into females without requiring natural-born females to be absurdly rare?
>>
>>63026180
Weirder maybe but...
I'll say that it can work, but can get a bit magical realmy. I'm the Anon above who lets his players write their own cultural stuff for their races and whatnot, and one of the chicks in my game did basically that but with gnolls + a dash of mindrape (later started dating this chick and let me tell you she was going for disturbing and magical realm for her all at once), their entire culture boiled down to "If you cannot serve willingly, you will be made to serve willingly."

It was super freaky when it was her turn to DM to the point it didn't really feel magical realm. More like a body horror psychological thriller. So it can work, but it depends on how you frame it.
>>
>>63026180
>Here's a weirder question
You said as much, but yikes. At any rate, the most plausible explanations I can think of are A.) females are looked down upon or otherwise considered second-class citizens, and thus, being made into one essentially punishes individuals by stripping them of status and forcing them to live as "lesser" peoples, and B.) there is some sort of work or issue that can only be completed by women, and thus, it's akin to a life sentence of hard labor.
>>
>>63026239
>>63026269
I just kept having this idea for a ratfolk mafia don-type crimeboss figure who would punish failed underlings by turning them into brainwashed bimbos and using them to populate his stripclubs, brothels and pleasure parlours, and I just wasn't sure if that could ever make sense or be anything other than pure magical realm.
>>
>>63026410
It could be, but as I said, it depends on the framing. I'd say in that regard it could still work even without it being too overtly magical realmy, you just need to make sure that it comes off as... Well, as creepy and horrifying as such a thing would be in the real world.
>>
>>63026410
Continuing this >>63026426 thought, because your idea reminded me of something, I'm pretty sure there's a body horror scene in the show Gotham where one of the villains is basically turning a failed henchman into a pleasure slave. I think. I can't remember if that's what it was, but it that whole little arc is pretty creepy.

It's kinda weird and a teeny bit disturbing how often /tg/'s method of making boring ass mook races interesting is "Give them a hardcore bimbo fetish deal for their culture." But far, far more alarming is how often it's genuinely just flat out better than what they had before.
>>
>>63026549
I'm not sexually into the whole bimbofication thing but I do enjoy things that work towards really creeping people out, so it works sometimes.
>>
>>63026410
Ah, well, that's a bit different. Criminal psychopaths might very well turn to some truly creepifying ways of dealing with people who have displeased them. Certainly motivates their underlings to stay on their good side, though the more depraved the villain, the more questions it raises about why people still associate with him.

Not the guy with the original idea, but IIRC in Gotham it was that the mad scientist used this as his service, presumably for people wanting to buy untraceable sex slaves or something. Harvested body parts off others, did literally full-body transplants and weird shit. One of his minions displeased him, so he conveniently disappeared (though from the audience's view, we knew what happened).

Regardless, very lucrative payouts for their services and/or fear work as powerful motivators. Could also be this is a specific punishment for snitches or perhaps his enemies.

In the case of the gnolls I referenced above, it wasn't even a bimbo thing for them, but it wasn't for doing poorly at your job either. At any point they would execute someone, they would instead find a use for them, which generally meant reducing them to an animal-intelligence-level baby maker to make more gnolls.
>>
>>63025865
Bumping this, because, seriously, I was expecting the El-ahfrahra to be swept off the board long before now. Mind you, I expected the whole thread to be gone. Guess ratfolk fans are more tolerant of Kiguri and/or Ink-Eyes than I thought.
>>
>>63026549
Well, you know what they say, when you have them by the balls, their minds will follow.

Though, seriously, I don't get the people who claim that being hit on by a curvy ratgirl or rabbitgirl would be a fate worse than death.
>>
>>63027325
You had me at curvy!

But seriously, when it comes to stuff like this in games, I usually just go by what makes sense. If I were playing in a setting that had ratkin or whatever, it's just logical that they'd have a variety of tastes, so getting hit on by one is more an issue of what my current character's tastes/orientation/interests are. Worse than death? I don't think I've ever rolled a character who felt that way- even the married ones would at least be polite about it, yeesh.
>>
>>63027307
They're a colorful take on a common fantasy niche, despite the weirdness which you assert doesn't need to come up in-game.
>>
>>63027497
Really, I think that's one of the keys to making something which COULD be magical realm into NOT magical realm- make it a facet of their culture, sure, but it's not really that important in passing. Maybe even just something that gets minorly referenced once or twice in dialogue but not explained unless pressed- if it's even brought up at all.
>>
>>63026180
What are male rats noticeable for, proportions-wise, compared to a lot of species?

What are male ratfolk therefore likely to be very proud of about themselves, physically?

What notable feature of their bodies would disappear upon being turned into a female?

Boom, horribly embarrassing and degrading punishment for any male ratfolk. Not a dishonour of being turned into a female (females are fine), it's the dishonour of losing something very precious to his self-image..
>>
>>63027544
Well, the key ingredient that makes a weird, fetish-inspired setting element into a Magical Realm is that the GM forces the players to deal with it against their wishes. Otherwise, it doesn't really count.
>>
>>63027801
Stepping back, you're right. Downside to being on /tg/ too much is this-
>someone makes a race/culture
>includes something that is fetishized by the internet
>gets shit on because magical realm
Guess I just saw that shit happening too much so I lost sight of what it ACTUALLY meant. Ty for the course correction.
>>
>>63027838
There's a lot of sexual stuff in fantasy that's pretty weird or gross, but most games tend to keep the details in the background where they belong. Drow apparently get off on the feeling of unborn twins killing each other in the womb, but I doubt most games ever bring it up, even the drow-centric ones. Which is not to say that stuff won't skeeve people out if they learn it, just that there's a difference between "some dead wizard wrote a treatise on the mating habits of another species forty years ago, and the duke has a copy on his bookshelf" and "YOU MUST SEX UP THIS LIZARD MAN TO PROTECT YOUR PROSTATE FROM THE DREAD CURSES OF AL'GHORRO, THE THIRD LIEUTENANT OF THE UNDERWORLD - WAIT GUYS WHERE ARE YOU GOING".
>>
>>63027497
Can you elaborate on what you mean by "colorful take in a common fantasy niche"?

I really, really want to avoid making them seem kender-like, which is a big worry to me given they're supposed to be from a macho "I ain't afraid of nothing!" he-man culture.
>>
>>63028328
That's actually the one I was referring to, not kender.
>>
>>63028399
Huh, I didn't realize. I was just more worried about the whole Fearlessness thing because, y'know, part of what makes Kender so hated is that they're Chaotic Stupid and one of the reasons why they're Chaotic Stupid is because they don't feel fear.

I know Starfinder get little love around here. But that is pretty much the idea I worked out for the Ysoki(ratfolk) with my GM. Ysoki being respected by most of the pact world races. But all the classic fantasy races(beside human) still seeing them as vermin. All of them feeling like they have something to prove, but at the same time seeing every little job no matter how meaningless or rough they are asked to do as a stepping stone to that respect.
>>

This makes me curious; anons, how would you make a ratfolk or rabbitfolk character for a Supers game? Mutants & Masterminds, the Marvel or DC licensed RPGs, whatever, how would you make a hero based on a humanoid rat/rabbit?

I mean, hell, Squirrel Girl used to be pretty cute until the Calarts brigade got hold of her...
>>
>>63025466
Hmm... for a setting like this, which is better? Ratfolk as the original pilots/crew of the spaceship that have descended into tekno-barbarism? Or ratfolk having evolved from the lab rats kept on board?
>>
El Rato es el fin
>>
>>63027436
So, does that mean it is not inherently wrong if the setting has human/ratfolk or human/rabbitfolk couples as a background element, then?
>>
In a setting inspired by Ravnica, which Guild-expies could you see ratfolk or rabbitfolk belonging to?

I could see ratfolk in the Golgari Swarm, Orzhov Syndicate and Simic Combine, and rabbitfolk in the Simic Combine, Selesnya Conclave and Gruul Clans, myself.
>>
Been thinking on my "star-rats" setting concept: anons, how does this look? Any potential here?

History:
>The Starseekers, the albino priest-kings of their race, preach that once, the Great Ship was their creation in the mythical Time Before. They created it on some far-flung world, and traveled between the stars before something brought them crashing to this world. But someday, they will make the Great Ship fly again; until that day, they will labor and work, until they have made it whole again.

Culture:
>A tekno-barbaric theocracy, obsessed with the idea of repairing their Great Ship and returning to the stars, but in reality too technically incompetent to have any real hope of success.
>Divided into Great Clans, each of whom performs a major vital task in their society, and the Sprawlers, the clanless outcasts who pursue a life of hardscrabble and anarchic survival in the broken and lawless regions of the Great Ship.
>The Starseekers, albino tekno-priests, form the First Clan, directing the race as a whole.
>The Terranauts undertake the disreputable but necessary route of trading with and sometimes expeditioning into the world outside in pursuit of material goods (and, secretly, knowledge) that could be useful.
>The Biologis produce the food that feeds the ratfolk race, and are also its healers.

Gender:
>There is a 75/2 percentage split in terms of females to males.
>In the Sprawl, this often leads to somewhat brutal patriarchy, as males jealously guard and defend harems of "breeders" to maintain their authority.
>Amongst the Great Clans, gender equality is the norm, with the so-called "sperm-bosses" of the Sprawl looked down upon as savages.
>>
>>63031866
This is all I have, for now.

Religion:
>Whilst the Starseekers are the ultimate spiritual authority, lesser faiths and cults proliferate in the Sprawl and amongst the Great Clans. This is tolerated so long as they do not seek to usurp the Starseekers or turn the ratfolk from their holy quest.
>The Mother is the ratfolk goddess of fertility and pleasure, a lustful and fecund thing whose myriad breasts and permanently swollen belly speak of her roots as the most primal of their religions. Her religion is beloved by the masses, but looked down upon for its reputed "barbarism" by the Starseekers.
>The Shaper of Flesh is a faith that calls for ratfolk to become more than they were, applying cybernetic and biological modifications to transcend their birth limits and improve their race to a superior form.
>The Voidminders are a psy-cult, seeking to awaken and hone psionic powers to achieve a spiritual transcendence.
>The Seekers of the Forbidden Spark study the arts of arcane magic, a power that has been declared unnatural by the Starseekers for its roots in the "dark world" beyond the Great Ship. Though forbidden, they practice in secret.
>The Green Sun Cult is the darkest heresy; they preach abandoning the great work of the Starseekers and leaving the Great Ship to enter the dark world beyond. Whilst many of the Terranauts or Sprawlers abandon their people already, the Green Suns are hated for their attempts to persuade ratfolk to depart the Great Ship enmasse.

Magic vs Technology
>In truth, most of the ratfolk technology draws its power from psionic energy, or from mystical energy - arcane magic originally, now divine magic.
>Magic is well developed in the "dark world", and can match or counter anything that ratfolk science does; rayguns and chainswords are exotic, but far from invincible.
>Cybernetic limbs, power armor, energy blasters... the ratfolk produce a wide array of goods, but have little understanding of how it works.

So, in the Star Wars canon, there's a race called the Selonians; humanoid otters who consist predominantly of sterile females, with one (fertile) male per 100 births and one fertile female per 500 births. These fertile females rule as queen mothers, keeping harems of fertile males and reproducing endlessly, dictating general clan policy whilst their legions of sterile daughters do all the actual grunt work of running a civilization.

Would you take this reproduction style/society for ratfolk or rabbitfolk? And why?

All this female Skav business has me thinking. If we actually do get another warhammer online, would they make female variants of all the races? Cant imagine it for Orks n Gobs but maybe the Skaven, beastfolk, ogres, etc. If so how would they make it work? Did WO even have much character creation?
>>
>>63044464
Assuming people went to the trouble of making another Warhammer Online, it's unlikely they'd bother. For starters, skaven don't let females be anything but lobotomized breeders, with the exception of Thratquee, who turned his breeders into rat-ogre-ish bodyguards because he's into that. Secondly, there probably aren't enough people intrigued by the idea of female gors or ogres to merit the development time necessary to create their models and their equipment.
>>
>>63044464
Pretty much what >>63044687 said - Warhammer Online probably isn't going to get greenlit due to how badly the first try was received, and the setting doesn't really support the MMORPG format due to lore. Add in the infamous lore-keeping nature of the Warhammer fanbase, and... yeah, it'd be more hassle than it's worth for Games Workshop to reflavor their armies to make female skaven and beastgors be a thing.

Then again, they did do Age of Sigmar, so who knows, maybe they'd consider taking a hatchet to that old-school lore in the name of "greater audience appeal".

The Green Sun Cult's basic goal is freedom; they preach both against the somewhat oppressive reign of the Starseekers and against the cramped, dangerous, restrictive environment in which their people are forced to abide. As Terranauts, the Green Sun Cult seek to establish places for their people in the wider world. They forge secret pacts with other races, and lay the foundations for independent settlements - pioneer villages and farms, essentially. Those who are converted to the Cult's message, or experienced Cultists who cannot take being in the Great Ship anymore, are smuggled to these enclaves, there to begin living in freedom.

Does that explain things better?

To explore the potential it has beyond that which their fragmented and dwindling technological lore offers; the Starseekers are extremely conservative, and their efforts are partially to blame for the stagnation and decline of their race's technology, as each new generation sees more and more old lore shrouded by mysticism and superstition, or lost into the graves of particularly paranoid/power-hungry tekno-priests.

Think of the Starseekers as a ratty version of the Adeptus Mechanicus in their "the Tech-Priests are actively stifling the growth and discovery of technology" interpretation.

In fact, I'm thinking I might do some more human M/ratfolk F fics, because we have plenty of Skaven for male ratfolk-focused fics in the smut archive, but a serious dearth of that. Shall I brainstorm some ideas along those lines? That way, I can have them written for the next iteration of this thread?

Well, let me rummage around in the ol' brainmatter and see if I can come up with anything interesting...

#1: Black Bayou Betrothal
Plot: Pledged to wed to seal an alliance between their once-hostile villages, a ratfolk ninja and a human rotweaver decide to take their introductions to each other into their own hands with a private moonlight rendezvous.
Tags: Human (M)/Ratfolk (F), First Time, Missionary, Tailplay, Petting.

#2: The Heat of the Moment
Plot: Clashing with her human rival to prove her skills, a ratfolk seizes the victory. In a moment of passion, she succumbs to long-repressed desires for her rival.
Tags: Human (M)/Ratfolk (F), Rough Sex, Cowgirl, Femdom

...Dammit. I'm drawing a blank. Any scenarios anons wanna see? I seem to find myself drifting to retreads and weirdness more than anything.

Skaven are neat but I kind of get annoyed with how often all their most interesting stuff gets eroded away in favor of turning them into Always Chaotic Evil Beast Race # 80 or something. That and said "beast" traits that are meant to be "instinctive" and thus obviously 100% unchangeable are never actually traits rats have, just yet again generic evil dickbag fantasy race stuff.

Course then when stuff like Clan Mors gets brought up people then yell that they're mary sue because fuck fuck fuck fuck
>>
>>63064500
What are their 'interesting' traits?
>>
>>63064565
The whole "parody of mankind" angle; they're rational, free willed creatures, but rather than being driven towards more prosocial behaviors and norms, they're paranoid sociopaths. But these are still human traits, and skaven acts, tho driven by different impulses, are still a reflection of man. They build cities, they do trade, they organize, innovate, question, struggle, and die, in much the same way, just without any guilt to rationalize. Unlike many of the other bad races, which are external dangers and can be contextualized as inhuman in nature, skaven are a direct analog to the flaws and fallacies of humanity and modern civilization.

It is why them being rats is appropriate and not just an arbitrary choice; the fear of rats as a society wide sensation emerged in the Victorian era, as people were trying to separate themselves from nature and to place themselves above it, rats represented a transgression force; they could not be kept out of dwellings, they thrived in the places in our society where we failed the most, and their manners and behaviors were far too much like ours to draw a comfortable line between them and us. One line I read about it that I liked was that they unnerved people as they treated humans as humans treated the rest of nature: something to be exploited, consumed, and ultimately overrun.

They behave in those manners, tho, because it makes rational sense for them to do so, given their psychological disposition and society, and not because they're just furry evil robots. When asking if a skaven can be good, the question shouldn't be "are they capable of it", but "what could drive them to behave like that in the first place"?

Also they're all a bunch of crazy little scamps with pew pew lasers and also puke monks and also frankenrat makers and also ninjas and also angry rats in armor marching and squeaking. Just like humanity, they have a diversity in behavior and ideology, fitting their purpose as a dark mirror to man.

It's nothing too special. Wizard, plus a warlock patron, minus pretty much all the evocation and "flashy" spells, plus some buffs and healing from druid lists, plus hexes (which work similarly to warlock invocations, giving some bonuses, at-will abilities, or "cast this spell so many times per day"). Still, it managed to be thematically consistent with people's idea of a spooky witch, so it has its fans. Doesn't really need a 5e port with warlock in the PHB, though.

On the one hand, human-like entities will probably have human-like birth rates. On the other, it's fantasy and you can justify pretty much anything on the grounds thereof. Ridiculous birth rates can certainly help to make a race seem strange and alien, though going overboard with that sort of thing raises serious biological questions (how are they maintaining proper nutrition for themselves and their children, how do they carry them, etc.). If they're only fertile during limited time periods, larger births make sense, but if they're fertile year-round, that could easily lead to overpopulation. Not to say that it's unfeasible; skaven stay in business due to reproducing so quickly that they can throw patently ridiculous numbers of bodies at their objectives and suffer no lingering setbacks for losing them. It all really just depends on what you want to do with them.
>>
>>63066759
Mmmmaybe. But I also think that archtypes tend to be effective because there's a lot of stuff that kind of operates under the surface of our understanding. We kind of subconsciously find that certain ideas fit together really well, as if by magic. Like how skaven globadiers end up with seemingly super out of place WW1 type gas masks, but that sort of combination of alien appearance and dehumanization of modernity ties into the stuff about rats being a threat derived from the consequences of post-industrial society (and the idea of rats flourishing in the corpse ridden no man-s land in trench warfare), and the use of poison gas is both a reversal in the human/rat poisoning relationship, but also symbolic of the transgressive nature of modern combat, where the strength and valor of an individual is destroyed by an impersonal, lurking, random danger. The strong being undone by the anonymous weak is something that has appeared in rat/rodent mythology (Tower of Bishop Hatto, for instance).

A lot of it is just me blowing smoke, and skaven are deffo a result of 20+ years of seeing what shit sticks to the wall, but I think the stuff that sticks, sticks because it resonates due to a symbolic meaning we are cognizant of but not really fully conscious about.

I love Watership Down and I tried to have a bit of a gander at the Watership Down fan community online. Apparently there is a HUGE SPLIT between the Movie/Book Fans and the TV Episode Community.

The movie/book community are less vocal and not really unified. More or less they will like to talk about pertaining the legends of El Ahrairah & his Servant Rabscuttle, The Blackrabbit, etc. and work on that.

However, The TV series side -- surprise, surprise, were a bunch of furries were full of vore projection, talking about their OCs and shipping Bigwig with Hazel or Fiver.

Adams didn't die for this. Also hopeful that the new series will be adequate.

I love rabbits depicted by Adams and wish I could find more books written like in the natural sense of animals, without any of that crazy furry bullshit.
