>Village is in a panic, Dragon has been spotted.
>The nobles begin pooling some gold in large carts for the beast, and running them out near the town
>The Elders scramble to grab as many prisoners as possible and tie them to poles and take them outside town as offerings.
>The Priests begin praying fervently for the town to be spared
>The peasants hide in their homes
>Then, with a resonating thud, the massive beast lands outside of town by the elders and priests, looking down at them, and speaks...

"Oh... wow you guys set up a lot. I uh... I'm kinda new to all this. I'm here to um... Take tribute from your village, or else um... burn it down? Are these guys the tribute? or is it this gold? It's BOTH? Ow wow, gee thanks guys. I'll just... take these and uhm... be back in a few months...? or maybe a few years. I don't remember. I just got my own lair and I'm tryin to be a real dragon but it's not easy, you know?"

So, how would your party react?
Have you ever run a reluctant dragon or beast before? Have you done anything like this for comedic reasons?
>>
>>62839750
no, serious all the time, no light heartedness
>>
>>62839750
Our GM keeps expecting us to be murderhobos but instead we talk to everything first. So, almost the inverse, we keep trying to reason with everything and everyone.
>>
>>62839750
I think the elder is doing it wrong though, everyone knows you have to offer maidens to dragons
>>
>>62839786
Luckily, this dragon is too new to understand such a basic thing like that, it seems.
>>
>>62839750
I've never done that before, but my players would probably think it was some kind of trap.
>>
>>62839786
the dragon is a girl dragon that's nerdy over human weapons. Obviously she has other priorities.
>>
>>62839750
>how would your party react
We kill the dragon. It just threatened to burn down the town, doesn't matter if it's being flippant about it. In fact that makes it worse. This dragon is a sociopath.
>>
>>62839750
i seriously miss running dragons like their own mythical species with their own culture, instead of being sexy british people trapped in a big giant lizard.

see: it used to be
>dragons are intelligent and can speak...in their own language
>prefer to growl and roar at little squishies.
>can and will eat humanoids.
>but they do prefer roasted sheep and cows
>dragons have their own line of reasoning and their own cultural standards
>it's utterly different from how humans and elves think

what killed dragons was beautiful shit like Dragonheart and the CoW setting 1/2 dragon thing. i used to love those things, then i realized it all was a descendant from 80's fetichism and poor writing / desire for homoginity. it took the savage yet intelligent dragons away and replaced them with another potential sex partner.

and you will spit because you can't accept that there was somethign beautiful in the concept of a savage magical lord of reptiles.

"Well, to be honest this town is more famous for its ceramics."
>Note: this town's ceramics are mediocre at best
"So if you really want some valuable tribute, we could find you some of that?"

"You've made a wise choice, sir and or madam. See you in six months?"
>Note: the town will have relocated by then

While slaying the dragon is definitely an understandable rote to take, your party must have a tough time if you've inherited your ability to read social cues and circumstances from a table leg. Also managed to misuse the word sociopath.

I know exactly how you feel. When I was little I fucking loved vampires and to an extent, werewolfs. Loved the threat about them and the traditional means of killing one of these children of the night amazed me from those old school black and white horror movies. Now they're both just a big joke, especially the vampire since as soon as you hear it the first thought on everyone's mind is glitter.
>>
>>62840628
I made my dragons embodiments of the seven deadly sins, immensely proud, envious, greedy, gluttonous, lustful, slothful, and wrathful.
>Pride
A dragon will never willingly submit to another as a result their mating is pretty much two dragons dueling with the victor raping the loser
>Envious
Dragons have a natural need to know that they have the best everything, the most wealth, the best slaves, the greatest power, etc. While they aren't stupid (they won't fight a dragon twice their size because he has more wealth) they nonetheless harbor extreme envy towards anyone superior to them
>Greedy
Dragons are extremely greedy, although they never actually spend their wealth they desire as much as possible, never being satisfied
>Gluttonous
Dragons not only desire immense volumes of food (dragons can eat over half their body weight in food in a single meal, their stomach being able to stretch massively to accommodate such volumes of food), additionally they prefer high volumes of food, many kingdoms or cities forced to pay tribute to a dragon will offer decadent foods and drinks in addition to wealth and slaves as tribute
>Lustful
Dragons have an extreme sexual appetite and will copulate with anything, while they have a general order of preferences Dragons>Reptilian Humanoids>Other Humanoids if they cannot find a suitable partner they will copulate with local fauna, bears, deer, elephants, etc.
>Slothful
Despite their desires, dragons are naturally lazy and if they aren't specifically compelled to do anything they can sleep for up to centuries if they have a full enough belly when they fall asleep.
>Wrathful
Dragons are quick to anger and slow to forget, some dragons become some engulfed in rage that they will proceed to destroy everything in their path for days at a time until exhaustion finally overtakes them and their rampage ends
>>
>>62839750
Why keep giving tribute to a beast thats clearly incompetent? Rise the moral of the village and convince them that they dont have to be slaves of a dumbass.
>>
>>62839750
I mean, why do dragons hold up in lairs anyway?
Not like you really have a ton to worry about being as powerful as you are.
Do you maybe want to move in town? We could help build you a big house, and that way its like we are all your tribute all the time. Maybe help keep us and our llama safe so we can grow meaning your tribute dose aswell.

Oh and if you see someone called a 'royal taxman' he is a known dragon hater. burn him.
>>
Maybe not reluctant but not all that invested. DM had it where the dragon basically played The Sims, literally physically, with some captives in a little faux village in her lair, and only occasionally had any interest in the town nearby for the purpose of having supplies for her little sims village and for potential new people for it. Like a dollhouse basically but with live people.
>>
>>62839750
Tell dragon that raiding dungeons is much more profitable than raiding villages. Try to convince it to join us.

It wasn't great at all, in fact really cringy because one, she had no idea of what normal or common-race lives or living were like, and two she never had any critics so her ideas for stories were terrible.

Basically everyone in her dollhouse town had some terrible character they were supposed to be, their lives were terribly cliche, and it all played out like some awful teen novels. Also she liked to self-insert.
>>
>>62839750
Most of my party would go along with it. One would immediately ask what color the dragon is, how big, detect magic, etc expecting that this is either a trap or a young copper dragon pulling a prank.
>>
>>62841585
This is pretty in-line with ancient European symbolism. Dragons were, thematically, the embodiments and agents of the Devil not unlike Angels for God.

I'm working on a setting well, a novel where Dragons have self-organized themselves in a similar way, where the various dragon species and temperaments form themselves into Cabals under specific Sins, with the Cabal head being the "Wyrm of X".

This dragon is getting my dick up its arse. Literally.
>>
>>62842508
I've been working on incorporating that as well. The solution I've come up with is that, simply put, Dragons aren't Humans, so their relationship and understanding of the sins is different than our understanding.

The sins, then could more accurately be translated as "drives" or "impulses", and are often approached in mental or ephemeral realms as much as the physical, and running 'cold' as often as 'hot'.

So a Dragon of Lust might be a sexual deviant, or more of a general hedonist, or a sort of Epicurean Hedonist, seeking to enjoy simple physical pleasures. And, being long-lived beings, their approaches can be somewhat alien. A sculptor who simply enjoys the feeling of shaping materials with their hands, creating works of art, might fall under Draconic Lust. As might a vicious murderer, who loves to feel flesh tear under their talons, and to hold things as they shudder their last breath.

Dragons of Pride, Greed. and Envy, therefore, can often be gifted administrators, directing the flow of resources and peoples, either for a desire to show their prowess at management, the thrill they get from controlling such vast stores of wealth and necessities, or to attempt to out-do other administrators or kingdoms.

>Hey so uh... tell me again why you need to be empowered by my magic? Are you sure this is the draconic thing to do?
>>
>>62843402
That seems like it could be a fun plot twist. Players go stop a dragon or eldritch being leading an evil homicidal cult, only for it to turn out that rather than the supposed BBEG corrupting humans and forcing them to perform attrocities, all the bad stuff was done by the humans out of their own volition to glorify their "deity" who is neutral or actually kind of weirded out by the whole thing.

...Which come to think of it pretty much how eldrtich cults are supposed to work. Cthulhu doesn't actually give a shit about humans, some people just thought that sacrificing people in his name will please him and reward them. It's like you one day finding ants performing little ant sacrifices in your name because one day you accidentally dropped a sugarcube on the ground right when one ant got killed.
>>

I don't know if ants could ever worship us, they already see themselves above us.
A few weeks ago some hardcore fucking type of red ants decided they were going from front yard to back yard through the house. The whole hive, single file, through the house. No stopping them, they didn't deviate from line. Took them about a day to get file out.
I only got bit once, (their route went over my computer desk, around my elbow and out the window) but where I was bit on my arm swole up the size of a baseball, got a zit head and burned worse than a wasp sting. Scary shit those fuckers could be back at any time and I could do nothing to stop them. You can't even squish em with your hands, you need a hard backstop because they're fucking armored too.

This is why there is always a gypsy that tells you of the secrets to beat the vampire without any fear of the vampires coming after her. She lives out of her wagon, and thus can safely move into any vampire infested town to ply her trade

The idea is not to make the sin "worthless", but rather 'limited/distinct', as the sin is something of a rough translation of the draconic concepts into English.

As it's a novel, the main character will be discovering these nuances over time with the audience. So the path will be

>Dragons organize themselves based on Sins.
>Dragons act in accordance with their guiding Sin.
>MC converses with dragon, learns that dragons have a more nuanced understanding of the sins, but use the common names as part of their cultural arrogance.

So, like, most Dragons of Wrath DO like to destroy things, and get pissed off easy, but it's also connected to broader themes of destruction and opposition than simply "hulk smash" all the time.

As a basic primer/summation:
Pride: Satisfaction, authority, and control
Envy: anticipation, ambition, competition, and internal desire.
Lust: enjoyment, sensation, and external desire.
Sloth: patience, peace, and introspection/oracular insight.
Wrath: destruction, emotional outburst, and opposition.
Greed: material wealth, oaths/deals/favors, collections and organization.
Gluttony: excessive indulgence, obsession, and dissatisfaction.

They're all centered around an idea that at least LOOKS like the sin, but some of them you have to squint or tilt your head a little. Or it can lead to weird things. A Dragon of Envy may be more interested in the implication of a reward or secret than the actual deliverance of it, since it was their DESIRE of the thing that they cherished.

>oh yeah, what happened to those virgin sacrifices huh? Stingy little cunts...

Other than that comedic monsters are rare in my campaign, it's mostly humanoid enemies I do funny.

I’m currently in a campaign where a dragon was trapped in a dungeon and desperately wanted to get out. Problem being that she was on top of a statue commemorating an actually good king that the people of our country loved.

>So we tried to figure out a situation where everyone could win, it turned into my character just reading books to the dragon, telling stories, and hanging out.
>the dragon was a pet of the king whose statue she’s under, when he died she was put under a sleep spell by his advisors to make sure nothing shit happened
>rest of the party didn’t want to fuck with the dragon, plus didn’t know about the horde so just left it alone.
>my character would then venture out to the library and the town butcher to obtain books and food.
>becomes so consistent that my DM changes the scene by saying “meanwhile, Anon and the dragon...”

>>62886544
>DM enjoys it so much she makes it part of the story.
>agency we work for doesn’t want us to tarnish name, one is required to look after dragon while other do work.
>become dragon babysitter.
>had to get the butcher to cook a whole cow several times a week
>bought several pieces of furniture to use and digging equipment.
>spend my time keeping orcs and goblins away from the area while I hire dig teams and shady contractors to help excavate the area.
>dragon makes up the difference with stuff from her horde.
>keep it under wraps by forging several documents
>eventually the tunnel is finished
>dragon is worried, doesn’t want to mess it all up.
>move all my furniture to a cart, tell the townsfolk my agency has called me back.
>have my work crews buy me carts
>put dragons treasure on carts, wheel treasure to cave. Count out all treasure and explain that all treasure is safely out and moved.
>open tunnel, dragon slithers two miles underground and comes out.
>have work crews fill the tunnel with rocks and cement,
>pay work crews off, turns out they were just mercs
>take dragon to new lair, dragon says as payment I can have anything from her horde.
>lmao, I don’t need that shit
>I bought some really nice furniture, a new cart, and a ton of supplies.
>plus a library card
>dragon is visibly saddened
>I won’t be able to hangout and read with her anymore

It's fun to think about turning thr typixal trope of terrifying, intimidating dragon on its head by turning this traditional emblem of fear and power into something that could be huggable, needs help in how to get along in life, and is just generally cute overall, despite stature.

I like to think that the goblins never ever attacked the village again, effectively scarred for life of the experience. However 1 or 2 of the goblins found they enjoyed being dotted on by the dragon enough they stick around pretending to be human children. They are completely terrified of the idea the rest of the village will discover the truth, when it is quite obvious to everyone except the dragon that they are indeed, a goblin.

I can imagine that too. A loaf of bread is fairly simple, a common staple of town life in a fantasy setting, but to our dragon it might seem pretty incredible. Growing the wheat, fetching the water, bringing the heat. And of course she’d make a giant loaf of bread, because bigger is obviously better.

It’s looking really good! You’ve got some good body language going between our dragon and human that’s going to make for a really amusing picture.

>>62902456
Whether she has a cave or a barn I think she’d definitely try to make it seem as much like a house, or her idea of a house, as possible. Even if she lived in a cave, she’d want windows and a fireplace and a front door, and would want to fill the place with mortal bric-a-brac to make it feel more “authentic.”

I’d say that her hoard is just the huge collection of furnishing and junk she’s amassed as an “Enthusiast,” much of which she has gleefully misidentified. Just imagine that Ariel was a chubby, adorkable, dummy of a dragon instead of a little mermaid and was even more of a packrat.
>>
>>62905715
You know, seeing what you’ve got so far, I see the makings of a dumber, sweeter version of the philosoraptor meme using our dragon.

That’s hard to say. On one hand, a cloak is clothes and clothes, as a human thing, are cool. On the other hand, a tapestry could be considered treasure and dragons like treasure. I’d say a cloak because I feel like she’d be particularly proud of herself for wearing one.

There will have to be a session revolving around a conman realizing how guillible she is. >She’s always eager to help people and make new friends, and as such has tried to spend time with most of the townsfolk, observing, misunderstanding and being taught about their various occupations and pastimes.

>Since taking up residence in town, she has tried her claw at being a farmer, a baker, a blacksmith, a courier, a doctor, a musician, a builder, a tinker, a priest, a constable, a wizard, and a painter, among many others.

I’d say this is pretty accurate. Oartnid what makes her a bad dragon seems to be that she doesn’t have the requisite viscious streak to be a draconic terror. When angry, she’d be prone to sullen sulking or throwing tantrums, which due to her size may become unintentionally destructive.
>>
>>62915495
and with how big I am drawing her people can not fit entirely within her mouth. Instead their legs and lower arms are sticking out, flailing about with lots of muffled protests.

She tries to act like nothing is wrong or out of the ordinary, despite the very obvious person sticking out of her mouth. and the fact she can't speak with mouth full.

In D&D 5E there are different kinds of resurrection spells. The lower ones only restore your life, but don’t fix any damage you took, some higher up ones create new bodies for them but don’t restore anything that was separated from the body (the one the genie fucked me with), and finally there is the highest spell called True Resurrection that fully creates a new body for the soul and restores them to perfect health which is why I asked for them to be “truly resurrected.”
>>
>>62916227

>I just wanted to make him be quiet for like a minute...
>>
>>62916125

Except he keeps referencing that the genie used a "lesser resurrection spell", which implies that there is a spell in the setting that would produce these results. And these results don't track to any resurrection spell I know of in any setting.

Further, there's an argument to be made that in a setting where there is a distinction between a 'resurrection' spell, and one that 'raises the dead', that agreeing to 'resurrect' people forces you to adhere to that agreement. You're not "twisting words" at that juncture, you're outright ignoring the contract.

But it's DM fuckery, so it's probably some houseruled bullshit to let them feel like their game is grimdark, so it's honestly not worth the argument.
>>
>>62916423
The existence of a "lesser resurrection" implies that there's a "Greater resurrection". By asking for his people to be "truly resurrected", he does avoid the trap of simply raising them and be done with it but he also falls into the trap of "you never specified that you wanted me to use the greater resurrection!" which would allow the genie to technically obey the contract while completely ignoring the spirit of it.

Alternatively, the genie might have resurrected them elsewhere, played merry hell with them, and then dropped them in front of the gnome who made the wish, which would also fulfill the wording of the wish while abusing the intent.

We essentially have a whole lighthearted campaign right here, complete with encounters and a final boss. Flesh out the villagers and add in some side quests for the players to pursue and you’ve got a game.

>In D&D 5e there are different kinds of resurrection spells

And none of them work like this.

ALL of them will heal physical wounds you took. (Even Revivify, the weakest 'resurrection' spell, that only works within 1 minute of death, STILL places you at 1 HP, so you're not immediately dying.)

Raise Dead will not replace missing limbs or organs, but if those limbs/organs were necessary for survival, then it will simply not bring the character back. Also, it can only target characters who have been dead for 10 days or less.

RESURRECTION can target anyone who's been dead for less than a century, that died of anything except old age, and it heals all wounds, AND repairs all missing organs and body parts, but will not cure magical diseases or curses, which will start impacting the (fully healed) person again once returned to life.

And then there's True Resurrection, which will cure all diseases and curses, will work if you've been dead for up to 200 years, doesn't penalize the caster or the target with minor effects, and doesn't require a body to be present to work.

So the ONLY way this makes sense is if the genocide of the gnomes was through a magical disease or curse that takes literal seconds to kill its target. And even THAT ignores the fact that True Resurrection is the only resurrection spell that works without remains physically present, so the Genie is spending at least SOME of the wish's power to break how the spell works.

Again, it's a DM fiat situation, so it's not like there's anything anyone can do, it's just messed up.

Gee golly gosh, faggot. Sorry I didn’t remember everything from the PHB word for word. Also, I’ve never used those spells and am going off of what the DM said, so if he fucked me for no good reason then about a quarter of that campaign was based off of the DM being a retard.

>if he fucked me for no good reason, then about a quarter of that campaign was based off of the DM being a retard.

Yes, which is partly why I questioned it to start with.

I was pointing out that your description didn't match how resurrection spells work by the rules, and questioning why anyone would have a setting where they DID work that way.

If your DM presented it as 'standard', then he was definitely wrong, and potentially just fucking you over and being a smug dick about it.

Hence why I concluded each of my posts with some variation of "this is probably the DM's fault" ("DM fuckery" and "DM Fiat"): the spell shouldn't have happened like that, so him doing that to your character was out-of-line. Sorry, Anon.

Fuck off with that combative tone, though. You're the one who came out trying to explain how resurrection spells work when a 3 second google search would have told you you were wrong and that you got screwed.

>" Not ALL creatures...."

>"Right. Like that cat. Cats aren't for eating."

>"Then... then what ARE they for...? What are not-for-eating animals for?"

>"Well, we call them "pets." A pet is a creature you keep around because it does a job and you enjoy its company."

>"Like... this "cat"."

>"Yes, like that cat. Cats keep mice and vermin away, and many people enjoy keeping them around. Here, hold it like this, and run your claws carefully along its back."
