Swords of Avalon Thread #10

Sorry it took so long guys, had to do some stuff last night and then went to sleep.
Docs with the lore:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Cm16GUoQtg5IqTe0FM9dKD15TpJGpkOf0Zzi5TS3BGM/edit
Thread Question: What Cavalier would you pilot in setting? I'd probably be in a Spear armed with Railguns for primaries and SRMs for close range. JJs and a wing system for moving around. Head would be some sort of scope system for sniping. Colors would be Various Greens, logo/heraldry would be a Knight helmet pierced by an arrow.
Thread Goal: 300 posts before 5 days like before

What should we do this thread? We got a lot of ByZant stuff done yesterday along with new Beasts/Dragons. We should continue those discussions.
>>
>>62336286
Posting some stuff done last thread

>Siren
The Siren is a medium sized drakebeast. Some times the are called Hags of Morrigan as well.

First encountered close to mid Dragon Conflict, this roughly one and half dozen meters lengthy cybermonster was chiefly an amplifier and focus for Morrigans Spellsongs. Their physical combat skills were mostly speed and claws but their main focus always was at the radio-waves. They truly could even immobilize/hijack Cavaliers of surprised Knights. No missile could hit a Siren for they would charm them to return to their firers. Sometimes advanced versions were used in even more complicated cybermemetic curses such as the Mistake of Mercia.

Yet after long-ranged Railcannons became accurate enough Sirens were no longer seen on the battlefields. Instead they began to prey on civilians, supply lines and unsuspecting transports. Even a single Siren could cause horrible damage to an isolated outpost when it would lock all the doors, turn machines against the occupants and finally just pump the air out.

Thankfully rare after the DC, it seems that survivng examples lie in waiting for their next prey in some desolate ruinworld, in some Sidhe Forest or in the systems surrounding the Mediterraean Gulfe.

The Beast of Caerbannog

"Death awaits ye all if ye dare venture to the Beast's Lair!"
-Gwyn the Sage

While Arthur PenDragon is best known for his victories and defeat at Camlann, there is a tale of a beast which caused he and his entourage to flee with gale like speed. Reports from his comrades and himself recount of the beast's power and invincibility, how even Artillery Grade HK weapons could not fell it. How it tore through Castles like soaked parchment.

The losses it accrued shall never be forgotten, or avenged for Arthur forbid any further contact with it.

And so the Beast has remained unmolested and thankfully never ventured from it's Lair...

Dragon's Teeth

Morrigan designed humanoid Automatons. Originally designed for working alongside Beasts/Dragons during terraforming operations. With the DC, they have largely continued their original purpose along with being the Morrigan forces primary infantry.

Their poor performance led to them being pulled from combat in favor of the other Beasts ( Alphyn, Harpy etc.) along with the development of the Werewolf Beast class.

With the degeneration/shattering of Morrigan, Dragon Teeths are largely shambling zombie like creatures, little suited for work let alone battle.
>>
Sahara

Desert planet found south of the Mediterranean Sea. Average temperature along the equator during mid day is approximately 175 degrees farenheit (79.44444 Celcius).

Strewn throughout the vast deserts are numerous ruins and wrecks from both Human and Sidhe. How such wrecks have landed there is because of an unusual Hyperspace disturbance emenating from it. Such a disturbance pulls ships out of FTL unless they are using a specific pathway and are very careful. Thus, traffic to the system is fairly sparse and always contested.

Home to many scavengers and nomad groups (notable Berber Tribes of the Saracens). Fighting between such groups is a common occurrence under the blazing sun and ruins of long past civilizations.
>>
Alsace-Lorraine (needs a better name)

Territory that borders Alpha Frank and Saxon territories. During the Saxon Invasion, Alsace-Lorraine was a center point of AF and Saxon fighting, over 50% occurred there. Since the end of the Invasion and many of the Saxons settling down in Avalonian space, Alsace-Lorraine has become a rather quiet place. Nowadays there are many wrecks from both the SI and DC strewn about ripe for the pickings.

Dirks are used on honorific duels and it's said that the metal in this cavaliers is sacred.

A ByZant Zxe-Class Praetorian, full stop. Probably more god and black than purple. Weapon wise, I'd see if I couldn't stick a miniature black-nuke launcher like the Knight of Gold's buster launcher and see where that could take me.

Any ideas for how the celt caledfwlch class (Said to have inspired caliburn) should be like ?
I see it as kinda of a early longsword class inspired on iron age longswords like pic related.
>>

Trident

Spear class Cavalier designed for shore defense. Built/modified from Spears during the DC in prepaeration for possible Sea Beast/Dragons attacks. Due to the rarity of such encounters, the Tridents are rarely deployed and mostly used for shore line patrol. Later were designed and improved for amphibious/aquatic operations to make them usable. They have since become increasingly common in taking back worlds that have submerged Dragon Lairs.

Despite their origin as Spears, many Tridents come in a variety of flavors and types. Due to the limitations of underwater combat, most Tridents are kitted out for close range combat. Typically they are armed with HF Blades, Phonon Masers and Torpedoes.

On alpha franks was alpha centauri colonised by RoME before they became a thing ?
>>

>>
>>62337301
caledfwlch

Celt madeproto Longsword. Said to be the basis for Caliburn and X-Caliber. Were larger than the then Arming Sword Class and were quite revolutionary for their time.
>>62337374
It's a fan redesign
>>62337387
That could work
>>
>>62336286
I think the ByZanth copy cavaliers like the menaulion and paramerion should be left for the future (When carloman and crusades happen)
For now they should use their own designs.
>>
>>62337394
Many Caledfwch are still around, whether upgraded to be more effective in the odern age or newer marks using modern Longswords as a base.

The Caledfwlch has become a symbol of honor and pride among the Celts within Avalonian space. While it has been superseded by the newer Longswords, they are still produced and take a role similar to the Montante of Hispania
>>
>>62337446
Last thread I did say the Menaulion was later in the timeline. It takes the space between Spear and Pike. Similar to the paramerion being a Arming Sword and Scimitar hybrid.
>>
Avernus (Not sure if planet or system).
Home of the remaining Averni celts who inhabited alpha centauri before the franks; heavily devastated by the dragon war.
>>
>>62337499
They likely don't like the AF taking up shop in their old home. They were likely oppressed by RoME given the proximity before the RT.

It says the Daggers are around 2M. But making them more KMF sized (4-6M) makes a bit more sense given that they need Fusion Engines.
>>
>>62337604
Recent advancements in miniaturization of energy weapons have led to a renaissance in Daggers and Shortswords that have changed the paradigm of Cavalier combat. While such advancements benefit larger scaled Cavaliers as well since they can deploy more. Smaller Cavaliers like the Dagger and Short Sword nowadays have improved lethality and are no longer easy pickings even for Arming Swords.
>>
So the doc mentions visigoths but there is no lore on them; so here is my idea.
They are spehss nomads related to saxons and alpha franks driven into RoME space by the huns; they wreaked havoc on RoME during the years preceding the fall before settling in the hispania cluster and some parts of alpha centauri.
They rule was severily weakened by the saracens and many visigoths have blended in with the native hispanians; although noble families usually keep to their visigothic origins.
>>
>>62337897
*Were spehss nomads; they have settled since a long time ago.
>>
>>62337897
>>62337915
Very nice. The Visgoths were constantly fighting each other which led to the Saracens having such success, and then the Dragon Conflict happened which we know what happened then.
>>
Bear

Heavy Assault Beast. The post powerful and feared of all the Beasts, at first many mistook it for a Dragon given the devastation they caused when they first appeared.

Remarkably durable and tough to take down such qualities are almost overshadowed by its surprising speed and strength. Possibly made as a "cheap" counter to Long and Great-swords.
>>
Alpha Franks view of Merovigi Arms Company (MAC)

Many AF look to MAC with a sense of pride. MAC is the prime representative for the AF in the RT. MAC also acts as a unifier and rallying point for the AF people throughout Avalonian Space. They also aid in starting up a number of AF companies to get them on their feet.
>>
I just put Mr and Mrs Galahad into the Docs. How do they look to you guys? Should I change anything?
>>
>>62337491
They are already on the doc.
Should i remove them or just add a statement saying they are coming later in the timeline ?
>>
>>62338242
I just did. I put them int the Charlemagne Era. They'll be part of a reformation that happens with the Young Emperor's reforms both military and civil going through
>>
I was wondering about the structure of the RT. We know there are the Great and Minor Houses. But are there some sort of lower and upper house system for them to deal with their problems? You know for settling disputes, whether territorial or copyright.
>>
The Electeus Family/Electeus Shipping

Prominent Shipping Magnate family among the AF. Very clannish in their operations, traditionally they have not let many non family members, even Alpha Franks, in on the upper echleons.

Dspite this attitude, the family are nonetheless a respectable and very industrious shipping company. They are most well known for the speed and efficiency of their deliveries. They mostly operate within AF clusters to provide top rate service,

Regnetrudis Odger
16 years old

Youngest daughter of Austregisel and Eudocia Odger. A marvel of genetic engineering born from Austregisel's years of studying under a Patrician geneticist and his decades since improving his skills.

She is largely regarded to be a Aquillaine in terms of capabilities and potential compared to normal humans, let alone an Alpha Frank. Stronger, Faster, Smarter and much more. So far she has never been sick and can with perfect clarity recite numerous research texts, that she has also made improvements to.

Since her birth many more traditional groups in Avalonian space expressed concern over her abilities and the nature of her creation and birth.
Austregisel has for decades walked a fine line with groups outside the AF enclaves. His mentor-ship under a Patrician largely has to do wth that, but his works in genetics and near dismissal of many laws has brought him under fire more than once.

Durandal

Prototype Sword by MAC. Rumors persist of it being built off of Caliburn and Arondight wrecks to copy their more advanced technology. MAC denies such claims. But few can deny the new Cavalier's power already being equal, if not surpassing them once it is fully complete.
>>
>>62339486
If i remember right yes.
>>
Sword of Attila

A legendary Cavalier from the Dark Ages. As the name implies it was purportd to be the personal Cavalier of the Hunnic Warlord Attila, The Scourge of Man.

Common accounts depict a Cavalier that was much like one of the Sword Classes, though the Huns used primarily a Javelin type design for speed and firepower. Some accounts even have it be Centauric, or four legs and a normal humanoid torso.

Whatever the case, the SoA is likely long since destroyed whether by entropy or by the civil war the Huns went through after Attila died. There is a rather ancient Cavalier in the Museum of Buda that resembles said Centauric depiction, but many regard it as a recreation by the Hungarians to garner tourists.
>>
Joyeuse

A variant of the Durandal prototype Cavalier by MAC. Is said to be used in the future as the flagship Sword for the Heir of MAC. With the Durandal in its early stages, it is without doubt the same is for Joyeuse as well.

By the time it is completed, it will likely go to either Carloman or Charles Heir, with whomever takes over when Pepin steps down or dies.

JC probably has the closest in terms of interplay between mecha scales and unit types. Some of the more advanced tech might be slightly tricky but could be built in system with some elbow grease,

Actually, we have some basic ideas on how the Gaels and Celts are formed: Gaels and tend to very family and clan focused and Celts are similar but scattered in the Avalon Space.
How would the AF be arranged? They seem quite focused on the Alpha Centauri system with some new system colonies here and there. And the MAC is seen in fairly positive light by the AF though many see it largely to push the Merovigi family's own agenda.
>>
I'm having trouble thinking of new ideas. Is anyone else having this issue?

Medusa

Beast of Morrigan that works by binding/immobilizing foes with an immensely powerful adhesive. Originally meant to work alongside construction crew, these drones were later interspersed throughout the hordes as a support unit. Never common nor rare, these Beasts were nonetheless a fairly common sight on the battlefields. Their direct combat capabilities were very low, as such they tended to be used either in ambushes or setting them up or during an offensive push on an already defeated opponent.

We know PenDragon is the only Corp. that can deploy High King level forces. So how about we determine which ones fit on this chart? We could fix the numbers while we're at it.

Corps are ranked sort of like this: (numbers subject to change)
Knight - Corps that can field and maintain at least 1 Cavalier+cohort or have equivalent resources
Baron - 10+ Cavaliers or equivalent resources
Viscount - 50+ Cavaliers or equivalent resources
Count/Earl - 250+ Cavaliers or equivalent resources
Marquess/Margrave/Landgrave - 500+ Cavaliers or equivalent resources
Duke - 1000+ Cavaliers or equivalent resources
Arch Duke- 2000-3000 Cavaliers or equivalent resources
King - 5000+ Cavaliers or equivalent resources

By carrying more armor and weapons to drown them in volume of fire also speed is a factor.

Celts are tribal rather than clan based.
To better understand celts you need to look at their origins; they ancestors were part of a pre-RoME wave of colonists (While RoME wanted power and profit; the celts were more like adventurous explorers.).
Unlike celts in hispania or alpha centauri (Who are remnants of original colonists); the celts in avalon descend from outlaws resisting roman rule (Think bagaudae) who were exiled to Io as a result there is a gang-culture element to their tribes.
Appearance wise gaels are stout and usually have red or blonde hair; celts meanwhile are darker haired and look more like dunlendings.

While many of the RT CEOs pay at least lip service to the NEC, only Lord Palamedes appears to be an adherent in any way. It would make some sense for the leader of the biggest and most powerful Pharmetheutical and Biotech company in Avalonian space to at least show some deference to the Church. PP has been a large contributor to ecosystem restoration since the DC ended. They also work heavily in the agricultural fields as well, whether for food or other reasons.

Most point to the Lord CEOs mother Ana as being an influence on the Lord's adherence to NE. She always took him to sermons and believed he would be truly great, but he needed a more conservative mindset to protect the ecosystems of the planets, rather than exploit them like others would.

Suggestion:
PenDragon is of course King by definition, although realistically they will fall into Arch Duke status soonish.
DuLac Dynamics is suprisingly just Duke tier
KAY is Arch Duke tier
Tristanites, now with their problems, are Margrave tier
Palamedes is Duke
Agravene is "barely" Arch Duke due to their recruiting of Merc Cavaliers
SSW is officially just a Viscount
Lanval is solid Margrave

Green monks are comparable to Duke but their forces are all around the setting.
Aegypt is probably Arch Duke
ByZant is just Duke (particularly after the civil war) but back cavs with black nuke deterrent.

Ye like it? Forgot many ofc and cant now check from doc.

Hispania is currentl undergoing a drastic change in its political landscape: The emergence of several Kingdoms that are dividing up the Cluster among themselves. Currently they are: The Kingdoms of Asturia, Catalon, Aragon, Castilla, Portugal, The Caliphate of Granada and some pettey states that are not long for this world.

Due to these States, many say the age of adventure and Errantry in Hispania is on the way out as these Kingdoms do not like when roving bands of Knights barge into their business and disrupt the lives of their citizenry.
>>
>>62353012
Asturia is in an unusual position due to the marriage between Lady Monica and Lord Gabriel 40 years ago. Tis has led to them having among the best relations with the RT compared to the rest. While the throne is currently in the hands of Monica's nephew Artus, the relationship between them is very friendly and Monica stays in touch with her Hispanic family.

Galahad Inc. has lent much support over the decades due to these ties and has received just as much aid from Asturia. Most notably is the Asturian Caballeros that have joined GI as mercenaries and have aided GI in numerous endeavors against other Corps. encroaching on them.

One things we should do is to map all these future what-ifs we have discussed and write down _brief_ outlines for them for GMs to consider.

Stuff like
Janettes Crusade
Death of Guillemere and partition of PenDragon
Succession of CEO Pepin
All stuff of the Hispanic Cluster
Saracens vs Aegypt
Fall of ByZant
Crusades vs Saracen/Aegypt victor And/Or the Potential Mordred Empire

Of course in the end: the Conquest of Avalonia by William the Bastard (what are Normans in SoA?)

And ultimately: the decline of Cavaliers into just a sports vehicle

Guillelme's death and the Partition will be especially nasty. Alstair will get desperate. Maybe even breakout the Guillelme clone.

Pepin seems like he'll have a tough time choosing between his highly successful sons which will lead to problems no matter how the two slice it.

The Hispania Cluster will be getting crowded by the emerging Kingdoms carving territory and people flocking to them for protection. Maybe they'll unite to counter the Avalon, Frankish and Mordred Empires?

Saracens and Aegypt will continue their song and dance until something happens, they counter eachother too well.

ByZant looks like it will have a chance at a second breath of life to fix/assuage it's internal problems. It'll likely be weakened and smaller but more concentrated.

William's Invasion could hit the reawakening of Arthur from Avalon as the final endgame of the entire setting. Whoever wins forms the new Avalon Empire.

Roland is typically seen as Chales' nephew so he'd either be just born or very young right now. SoA genetic engineering and rejuvenants push the ages of people and events at later dates. Most depictions put Roland in his 20's if not early 30's. In SoA he'll likely be in his 60's minimum when he becomes famous renowned.

Galahad: The change has been fairly notable. They were once a Minor House but their actions on and off the fields of battle during the DC granted them immense clout. When the DC was over and rebuilding came into effect, GI had expanded considerably like most of the Corps and maintained such an expansion for decades. They absorbed a number of smaller Electronic, Programming, Software companies to enhance their own tech/manufacturing base. They used to be rather naĂ¯ve before the DC. Planets are generally divided amongst the Corps in Avalonian Space. Each Corp. has a region where they largely stay and mind their business.

And then there are the developing/Frontier worlds where things get quite heated as Corps. vie for position for land they enjoy. Borrs really wants areas with good mineral resources, DuLac and good looking areas for resorts and so on. Much of the conflict on planets takes place in border regions away from settlements to reduce collateral.

Space Colonies are owned each by a single Corp as such damage would destroy them.

Chivalry is dead. In this day and age, the once Kings of the Battlefield have been reduced to little more than sports equipment for the entertainment of the masses. However, there are still those who cling to the old ways and deploy Cavaliers unto the battlefield. As such, Cavaliers are rare and sparse, but their Knights are without doubt the best of any era. In this expansion Knights and Cavaliers are at their Epoch. The average Cavalier of DtC is roughly comparable to the highest end of the Charlemagne Era.

Italy is a place of Conquest. Of warriors. Of glory.

Italia WAS ruled by a RT-like Feudal Coporate body filled with Mafia-esque families and were a huge trade partner to the RT. And then came the Lombards who kicked the League of Italia (LoI) out of power somehow (Maybe they came in when the DC happened and the RT was too busy to help drive out the Lombards?) It has been over a century and the Lombards have dug in especially well. Not only were they excellent warriors, but they managed to give more freedoms to the native Italians than the League ever did. With the RT in reconstruction and dealing with the mourning of the losses by the DC, they were in no shape to drive the Lombards out of Italia.

And now war has broken out between the two powers after decades of worsening conditions between the two.

Current KingEmperor of the Lombardic Empire. Has taken over from his Father Sinibaldo Theudoald III due to said Father getting Lombardia into a war with the RT. He realizes that the situation is too deteriorated to go back now. His father and his advisors saw too that in their constant antagonizing of the RT.

Far more calm and level headed than his now late-by-his-own-hands Father, Sinibaldo IV is a breath of fresh air to the Lombardic peoples of the Empire. He sees the future of the EMpire as dim, while it is strong in population and industry, great logistics and a trained military, the RT is much moreso in those areas despite the wringer of the DC over a century ago.

In terms od aesthetics, Lombards have a Neo Feudal look to them, or more accurately Neo Late Dark Age/Early Medieval. Colors are all over the place with different houses with their colors, mercenaries, foot soldiers etc.

Force composition like many current Star Nations is varied with a preference for more standard forces with Cavaliers in the hands of especially Elite units (Nobles, Royal Guard, skilled middle class, mercenaries etc.) Their standard forces are quite good and have a defensive advantage with the narrow entry ways into the mainland of Lombardia from the north.

Sicily and Sardinia+Corsica are rather remote (especially S+C) due to the nebulas/dark space surrounding them.

Splendid.

>Genoa
Once a mighty spaceport rivalling Marseilles, it is now a desolate wasteland. A beachead of RT forces, it houses the Avalonian Lombard Expedition Force (ALEF) HQ.

Yet even now it is not secure: at least thirteen major battles have been fought over the System and no end is in sight for Avalonians and their allies lack the spacepower to blockade all the Starway access points.

Commanded by Sir Guran Parcival, uncle of the current CEO.

Native Lombard and Italians of the system and neighboring ones are putting up a fierce fight against the invading Avalonians "For King and Lombardia!" are on their lips. Despite the issues with the recent late King, the intrusion by the Avalonians has given a uniting fervor amongst the once separate ethnicities/classes that make up Lombardia.
>>
Milan, North Lombardia

Second most populous system within Lombardia only to the Throne system, Lombard Prime. It is a center of art, trade, and culture for the Lombardians and a major trade hub with the RT. Currently it is a warzone with defending Lombardians battling increasingly embittered Avalonians. Much like Genoa, many battles have been fought within the system. But unlike Genoa, Milan is still under Lombard control, though they are beginning to tire. However the Avalonians are facing a situation much like Genoa in that their supply lines are running too long and are running short of them. The mostly Alpha Frank forces battling there though the soft and effeminate northern Lombards would be easy pickings, they were wrong.
>>
After the Lombards came to power after overthrowing the League of Italia, the native lower classes and even many of the middle class welcomed there conquerers turned saviors. For generations the native Italians were stuck in a multigenerational rut of stagnating wages, outsourcing jobs and a myriad of issues owed to the League of Megacorps. that ruled Italia after the fall of RoME. Despite the Lombards seeming barbarity they were quite advanced and more egalitarian than the League.

While many Lombards took the roles of Nobility and instated a new hierarchy, the livelihood of the average Italian became better over the years. New infrastructure, internal trade, new jobs to keep up with population growth/death.

However it was during the reign of the late Sinibaldo Theudoald III that the King and a large amount of his supporters became increasingly despotic over his 40 year rule. This descent to despotism was a good part of the reason for the deteriorating relationship between Lomabrd and the RT. While the relationship between the two was never the warmest or friendliest, it was fine to those involved. Sinibaldo III however took it upon himself to be as antagonistic to the RT especially in the last decade leading up to the War. Many blame the late King's behavior on the sycophants he was surrounded by, other blamed his coddling mother who was Sinibaldo II's 3rd wife and clung to the rumor his father was murdered so Sinibaldo III could take over. Whatever the case Sinibaldo IV now has to deal with the fallout of this disaster.

What are the most Famous Battles of the Avalonia-Lombard war?
>>
>>62371934
I was thinking of one where instead of just surviving and barely beating the Avalonians, the Lombardians instead really beat them with minimal losses. Maybe the Crown Prince is a badass and takes a numer of Knights hostage. Maybe Robert DuLac took part in the war to earn some prestige in his father's eye but gets captured during the battle.

Kind of hard to think of a proper battle for the RT-Lombard War. Due to the dark space/nebulas surrounding Italia it makes only the "North" the viable way of getting in without great risks for the RT forces. This allows the Lombardians to focus their defenses to the north and the RT smash agains the walls. This allows the Lombards to keep churning stuff out to shore up the defenses further, likewise with the RT brining more troops to the North border. It's more a question of who'll lose morale rather than a who will win question.

It's refreshing to see a italy analogue that is not reinassance based (Nothing wrong with reinassance per se; but Italy has a rich history who gets overlooked by it).
What do you guys think of some Italian Futurism influences for Lombards ?
>>
>>62372845
That could be the Lombards basing their new architecture from the RoME designs. In SoA RoME architecture is YUGE, people think literal Giants lived in them. Like kilometer tall ceilings.
>>
>>62369701
I think the war should be mainly between AF and Lombards with some round table support on the AF side.
>>
>>62372872
Good idea.
Futurism is a great style for that because it manages to be beautyfull and awe-inspiring while still looking alien and industrial.
>>
>>62372882
Yeah that was my imagining. This will play int othe later creation of the Frankish Empire coming about. The AF Lombard War will be their Nam in a way. Carloman may die in this war leading to Charles becoming heir and painting his perception of the RT.

>Big battle
>Towards the end of the war and everyone is just getting sick of it all
>Carloman and Charles are both on the field
>Throughout the War they argue as brothrs do, about the direction of the war and all the AF lost to it
>How the RT could have helped just kill of Sinibaldo III and put IV on the throne
>During the fighting Carloman saves Charles and takes the blow meant for him
>Charles brings Carloman's body/Cavalier back, begs the doctors to save him
>Carloman dies
>Charles is jaded by the conflict and withdraws MAC and AF forces at large effectively ending the War
>>
>>62373083
This would paradoxically lead to improved relations between the AF and Lombards. While Sinibaldo III antagonized the RT enough to start a war, the RT continued it and tried to break the Empire. The AF took the most casualties of the RT Coalition which really sours the mood.

Pretty much the negotiating table will mostly be AF and Lombard with token RT representatives.

Battle of Turin

Considered the final battle of the Round Table (Alpha Frank) Lombard War. By the battle's eve both sides were worn down by years of fighting with minimal territory gained by the RT forces, the Lomabrdians were mostly in the war to defend their territory and as such had little need to expand their territory. As such, Northern Lombardia became a meatgrinding stalemate with millions of military personnel lost on both sides each.

The reason it is considered the last battle is because of the near total desertion of the mostly AF forces following the death of MAC Heir Carloman and then Heir Charles ordering a general end to MAC and AF forces engagement in the War. Without the AF, the RT war machine effectively fizzled out with over half their fighting force leaving and their supply lines stretched thin.

Ultimately the RT would pay reperations to the Empire of Lombard for the aggression directed toward them. Territory taken by the RT would be given back as well as monetary and infrastructure compensation to help in rebuilding.

What was seen as a definite and assured victory for the RT ended in bitter defeat.

Lombard Prime

Formerly the system of Romula. It was the seat of power for the League of Italia. It is the cultural, industrial and economic centre for the Lombard Empire. It also is it's most populated system.

The planet of Lombard Prime is renowned for it's swathes of RoME architecture that dominates the horizon. When the Lombards took over they began mass public work projects to build vast amounts of new infrastructure across Italia to fix the negligence caused by the centuries of rule by the League. They used their own architecture as a base for much of it to begin a new era for the people of Lombardia.

Lombard Knight

A native Italian granted a honor of piloting a Cavalier due to his courage and dedication in the face of the enemy, Callisto is a quickly rising star in the Royal Lombard Armed Forces. It is quite rare for a native Italian to be granted a Cavalier, even a Short Sword like Callisto pilots. But his agifting is as much a testament to his skill as it is dur to the shortages of Knights to pilot them. The war has reaped a terrible toll on the smaller population of Lombardia. More and more natives are being brought in to fill the spaces left by deceased Lombard Nobles.

From the same unit as Callisto, Miriam is an even rarer sight among the Lombards: a Female Knight. Since their conquest and subsequent reign of Italia, the Lombards have been much more fair and egalitarian than the League which preceded them. But they are nonetheless a foreign occupying culture and brought their culture with them.

They are also fairly conservative in their thinking, and to them women should not be on the battlefield. In this day and age such a view is unusual, but few try and debate such a thing. Much like Callisto's appointment to Knighthood, she is a sign as to the poor state the Empire is being put through.

Back again

When you think about it, Lombard is in both a great and terrible location.

-Only two main ways to get in without ships blowing up/flying out to nowhere:North and South through Sicily
-Makes it all very defensible
-However they are surrounded by RT/AF to the North, Saracens to the South and ByZant to the East
-They have had disputes with all three groups
-ByZant is oddly the least likely to attack at them right now due to their own internal troubles, Saracen are second most likely over the whole Sicily issue and the number of Saracens who have gone native and joined Lombard
-RT/AF who they are currently at war with and show no sign of stopping
-RT/AF are having trouble as they are being stonewalled thanks to the North of Lombard being a series of fortresses and are being reinforced by the Central regions
-S III has not helped the situation before his death, the North is less capable of repulsing the RT/AF than it should be due to mismanagement, the South is weaker than It should be

>>
>>62380225
>BTW going back to the present how far in the war is the setting supposed to be ?
3-5 years now. It's in a deep stalemate since only the Northern corridoe/funnel is the only eal way for the AF/RT to move large amounts of forces through. Lombard is currently shoring up their southern defenses at Sicily and the toe to prevent Saracen incursion, though that's unlikely to occur. The East is okay for now with ByZant mired in internal issues and the Saracens,Balkans and Dragons.

Syracuse
Governerial Capital of Sicily, Lombard Empire

The largest system of Sicily. Sometimes called the Southern Genoa of Lombard, which they resent given they are much older than Genoa being an ancient colony of an extinct civilization.
It is the Lombard Empire's most important spaceport and trade center in it's southern most territory. The situation in Syracuse due to the Northern War is tenuous currently. Many fear the Saracen may cross over the Strait to launch an invasion up the Toe to get to the Center and crush Lombard.

Brundisium

Lombard's Main spaceport on the Adriatic Sea and it's prime connection to ByZant. Lombard Traders regularly makes trips to ByZant from Brundisium to Apollonia laden with goods back and forth. It is also quite fortified in case of ByZant aggression.

Like most systems withing Lombard/Italia, Brundisium was a populous RoME Spaceport that would fall into the hands of the League of Italia following the colapse of the Empire and the Dark Age. Brundisium would fall into the Leagues hands from ByZant during one of the Empire's many civil wars and would remain in it's control until the Lombards swept the League away.

So i was thinking about the Spadone class cavalier.
What about it being a new XBAWKHUEG lombard cavalier copying montates and longswords; introduced by Sinibald IV in his modernization efforts ?
>>
>>62385536
Possible. But maybe as part of Sinibald III's growing despotism? He wanted to make te most powerful Cavalier's they could and so the Spadone was made?
>>
>>62385598
How's this?

The Spadone came not out of need like the other Greatswords but want. Driven by the growing despotism of Sinibald III, the Spadone was made to showcase the Empire of Lombard's wealth and power. Another reson was Sinibald III's growing paranoia about a possible invasion bt the Round Table or ByZant. As such, he believed Lombard needed a new symbol of power to unite the Empire and ward off such possibilities

However there was barely a need for such a Class in the Lombard Armed Forces for such an oversized and powerful machine. Lombard had generally done fairly well for itself against the odd Dragon raid, they never truly encountered True Dragon.

But in light of the Round Table-Lombard War, the Spadone has shown itself for being an excellent Cavalier that can take on the T's more advanced models, notable the Claymore's one on one with little trouble.

Such performance has led to Sinibald IV to approve production for more Spadone Class Cavaliers to reinforce the beleaguered North. Once such Spadone is 'Righteous Truth', the Spadone of now Crown Prince Odoin.

Nuraghes.
Ominous fortress-like structures found in Sardinia older than RoME and possibly human space exploration.
Made of giant blocks of strange seemingly indestructible materials.
Nuraghes are found both on land and floating in space; they may exhibit a host of anomalous features (Altered physics, non euclidian geometry, completely lifeless, altered time, bigger or smaller on the inside; doors that make no sense, escher stairs etc.).
Some are pristine others ruined (What would have damaged such invulnerable constructs is unknown); they have awed experts from all over the galaxy altought the sardinians don't see to mind them.
With the war coming troops are using the Nuraghes as strongholds what effect this will have on the war or on the garrison is unknown; efforts have began to try to understand the nuraghe's weaponry and power source.

Flyssa

A Sword Type Cavalier of Saracen origin. There is some debate among Round Table intelligence of what exact class the Flyssa actually is. Most reports and dissection conclude that the Flyssa is less a strict class of Cavalier but a somewhat broad range of them. The Flyssa is described by most Saracens, especially the Berber Nomads where it reportedly originated from a model similar to the Gael Dirk Class, as ranging from Dagger to Shortsword with other sizes between.
Most conclude that the Flyssa essentially means a "small and useful blade for anyone".
The Flyssa takes after the Scimitar also from the Saracens in terms of speed and maneuverability regardless of its dimensions. Despite this the Flyssa is regarded as being fairly easy to learn and pilot .

Hunting Sword

Less a distinct Class but rather a variation born out of the DC. Typically constructed from Shortswords, though Arming and Longsword were known to undergo such modifications. Built with reconnisance and pursuit in mind, the Hunting Swords were used both in finding Beast Lairs and the finishing off of stragglers. In the modern age, they continue such tasks but also are used against human foes quite often. The Cavaliers and their Knights are sometimes jokingly referred as the "Hounds of the Round Table".
>>
Cinquedea

Lombard/Italia Cavalier. A mostly ceremonial/ornamental design built for the League of Italia before the arrival of the Lombards. Since then, the Lombard Nobles and Royalty have taken the Cinquedea as their own.

The Cinquedea is derived from the Dagger, though notable taller and very much increased in bulk. This bulk and height are put to use in decorations and ornamentation to show off their pilot's wealth. Due to their ceremonial use, it is rare to see a Cinquedea in battle other than fending off another in a duel or foiling an assassination.

Performance wise they are comparable to a Dagger though with notably more durability and power compared to their originators. Weaponry tends to be melee weapons such as blades and shields with ranged being quite rare and seen as uncouth by the Nobility.

Hunting Swords are typically armed much like Shortswords in terms of weaponry when used against Beasts or Dragons. But when used in a law enforcement capacity they tae a much more nonlethal approach. Shock weapons, adhesive/net guns, microwave agitators and more are used when up against criminals.

But the true reason they are called "Hounds" is due to their extensively enhanced sensors. A typical modification is the head which has a large optical sensor for long distance visuals. Recon drones are another common add on when hunting foes.
>>
What about a Swordbreaker ?
Experimental dagger class with miniaturized energy weapons (see >>62337691) cretated to counter swords with it's speed and devastating weaponry.
>>
>>62390685
Sounds good. Maybe they're more a variant like the Hunting Sword and got the name for how effective they became?
>>
>>62390650
I see police hunting swords as having shortsword weaponry with some backup non-lethal.
The real non-lethal specialized cavaliers would be the Mancatchers (Pikes and spear modified for riot control).
>>
>>62390719
I think it should be a separate weapon, swordbreakers are pretty uniquely designed compared to other knifes.
Also they should be use as support in a combined arms approach (Reflecting how the swordbreakers was used as a off hand weapon for a swordsman).
>>
>>62391116
I forgot about those. But I guess the Hunting Swords are more like Labors in that they are brought in when Cavaliers are involved in crime.
>>
Instead of being Knights players could be Constabularies in charge of taking care of Civilian Cavalier crime.

Swordbreakers sound a lot like mini Axe Class to me from that description. Huge firepower In a tiny package.
>>
>>62391142
To be fair mancatchers were cited only once wayback; i had the idea to ressurect them.
I think huntings sword could also be used in non-cavalier crime; aiding with manhunts (Due to their sensors and going where wheeled vehicles can't), escorting VIPs/cargo or being used as a spearhead to raid dangerous areas (For the last think those armored cars brazilian cops use).

Shepherd's Axe/Fokos

Quite possibly one of the most unusual Cavaliers known to Humanity. Originating in the Carpathian Nebula, it appears to be independently developed by the Hungarians.

As its name implies it is an Axe Class used by Shepherds. 'Shepherds' is a term used lightly given the monsters such 'Shepherds' herd and breed for selling their by products. Called Dire Goats by the natives, these creatures were thought to be tamed/domesticated Beasts by travelers and archivists from RT Space. Many examples of the Dire Goats are as large as a Dagger with some examples even more so, and are more dangerous than one would imagine.

Capable of goring Daggers and even Shortswords, the Fokos, as the natives call the SA, was built to subdue and herd the Dire Goats. It appears the SA was built off of the Axe/Hatchet Class due to the wide availability in the Carpathian Nebula.

Estoc

A variation of the Longsword Class. Built for anti-Tank and Cavalier combat but also meant to slay Dragons. To do this some of its speed, maeverability and armor are removed in favor of more powerful weapons meant to get through armor and destroy internal structure. Their is debate about the true meaning of this class when the larger Axe Classes exist.

Venice

Lombard's most important Starport System in it's North Eastern territory. It was one of the first major Systems of the League that fell to the Lombards when they began their conquest of the League a year before the Dragon Conflict broke out in Round Table Space. Due to it lying on a prime Starway junction and industrial might, it became the springboard for the Lombards eventual success in finishing the League.

Venetians, the natives of Venice, are still resentful of being subjugated by 'Barbarians' even after a century. Venice and its inhabitants were a prime trade port for the League despite its proximity to the Balkans and the constant incursions by Balkan raiders and pirates. The Venetian mercantile upper classes grew fabulously wealthy by brining trade of all kinds from the East , North, West and South to sending them off to such destinations where they normally wouldn't do so otherwise.

With the Round Table incursions from the East and North-East, Venice has luckily not surrendered to the invaders by dint of the Lombard Empire Armed Forces, most being non Venetian, keeping order and are being made to produce war goods for driving the RT back.

League of Italia (or simply The League)

The now defunct previous rulers of Italia and it's Island systems. Were often called by the critics and pundits of the Round Table as "Their Dark Reflection". Had a rather Laissez Faire approach to their Megacorps.

After the Collapse of RoME and the subsequent Dark Age, many surviving Patricians and their off spring would continue to rule parts of the Cluster for generations. It was after generations that the League would form in response to the creation of the Round Table when they realized they would make more wealth through trading with this new Mercantile-Political body than if they kept fighting each other.

Any other ideas for the Lombard-Round Table War?

Battle of Pisa

Currently ongoing, Pisa is the site of the furthest the Round Table Expeditionary force has achieved into Lombard territory.

While not a great Spaceport/Starway system like Genoa, Venice and the like, Pisa nonetheless is a huge stepping stone for the Round Table if they gain control of it. Fighting has been especially fierce here with Lombard's industrial centers from the Central region is in grave danger. However the proximity is a boon for Lombard as the majority of their military and industrial might can be brought to bare against the Round Table forces.

As it is with most battles of the War, the RT is feeling the effects of long supply lines while Lombard can resupply and regroup far better.

Current RT force Marshall is Hildoinus 'The Bull' Taurin, an AF commander from MAC. He is infamous for his bullheaded and aggressive disposition

This is pretty much the basic rundown of the RT-LE War currently. Due to the Swiss not letting the RT through, this makes them only have ONE way in: through AF territory. However the Lombards can bring in a bunch of bodies from the East and Center to fight them off.
>>
Due to how poor the Round Tables showing in the RT-LE War, they are currently, and failing, to get the Swiss to open their borders for them to move troops through.

The Swiss don't want to because:
-They don't wan't foreign troops moving through their territory
-They are actually on good terms with the Lombards on trade and such, despite Sinibald III's despotism he kept the himself in the Swiss' good graces in case of such an eventuality.
-They are miffed by recent trade deals with the RT and enjoy seeing them get pounded by the Lombards

The RT has also recently tried sanctions against the Swiss for continuing trade with the Lombards with the War ongoing, but the Swiss have repulsed with their own sanctions and would happily trade with the Lombards and their Eastern and Northern neighbors to keep themselves afloat.

Sadly rather occupied at the moment. The Lombard-RT war is great stuff!

Womdering: what opportunities for PCs are there in the small/medium/large scale of things?

It seems that the war is moving more and more into a MAC vs Lombard situation (as it kinda should). There is of course glory at the battlefield and at the HQ.

Should we write some systems where battles are a bit more skirmishy?

>dammit we need a spacemap
>>
>>62401184
Yes we need a space map.

Opportunities would be scouting, incursions, salvaging wrecks from the battlefield and a host of stuff.

So how should saxon aesthetic be ?
Spehss bikers ?
>>
>>62401388
The Celts have a ganger aesthetic I believe. But The biker could work given how they ravaged the RT.

Kontarion.
ByZanth catapracht roughly equivalent to the lance class.
Treshold breaking and devastatingly powerfull wit heavy armor; but very difficult to control especially out of space.
Usually fitted with black nukes.

How do I save threads on suptg? I really don't want this one to disappear like 6 and 7 from the docs or the others that weren't saved.

I was just rewatching the patlabor movie and when the factory scene came on I realized we never talked abut how Cavs/Cataphracts are made.

I'll discuss this more in detail next thread, but unlike say Patlabor or Battletech the creation of Cavaliers is closer to FSS than the previous. It's less assembly line and more blacksmiths forging great blades, though Daggers and such are simple enough and take large losses that factory grade production makes sense.
>>
>>62403168
I would say yes for the most part. Maybe older models were churned out factory style though?
>>
>>62401544
I'd hate to be the fucker has to drive one of those.
>>
>>62405226
I wonder about the Post Threshold Cavs/Cats. Would they have some AI? I wonder how the Kontarion 'feels' to meld with?
>>
>>62405899
Post-thresholds have either ai/cyber melds or bio-enhanced pilots by definition.

Probs tge black nuke armed shits feel SO WRONG that they drive pilots insane. To wield weapons thar could not only blow up planets but damm entire generations away is usually is too much.
>>
>>62405226
I'd hate to be the guy covered in armor having to ride a horse while holding a yuge two handed spear so i'd say it makes sense.
>>
>>62406128
They would have bio enhanced pilots considered ByZanthine technology.

Matbe they're rejected Patricians?
>>
>>62407787
Wasn't thir a Patrician/Normie hybrid? Aquilae they were called.
>>
>>62407948
Yup however they were pretty much human if memory serves. Wonder if there are any modern Aquilae mucking about?
>>
>>62408093
They'd likely be the modern ByZant Nobles and Imperial Family cadet branches.

Their are likely Aquilae in RT space, most likely in the Great Houses.
