Fishmen thread. What are they like in your setting? Do you use them at all? And if so, how?
>>
>>61149136
On the rainy, cold and miserable western coast of the northern sea there are a collection of isolated villages that survived the War of the Gods with surprisingly little damage despite their god being a casualty. The people are typically hollow cheeked with receding chins, fucked up teeth, webbed toes, tendency to premature baldness and fucked up looking eyes. Due to them being remote and of a more or less unsettled/depopulated land everyone assumes that they have spent too long in isolation and this is all the effects of inbreeding.

They are not welcoming of outsiders, they worship the dead god whose tomb, they claim, is a few miles off the coast and they subsist of a heavy fish diet. Their villages don't have any land routes connecting them and in the old day the Empire never got around to building any because the miserable bastards don't have enough to tax that would get them their money back on them.

They can be befriended, they aren't monsters, just ugly and very dour.

After humanity discovered Trion energy and ruined the world in their crazy mech battles, several new races arrived or reappeared on the planet to take control of this new, invaluable resource. Atlanteans were one of them, though that probably isn't what they call themselves. They look like bipedal deep-sea fish of various types, and their mechs seem almost to be made of stone, with green and gray color schemes fading into each other, and usually designed in the shape of monstrous creatures. Atlantean battle mechs eschew traditional projectile weaponry in favor of dissolving acid and slow but powerful melee attacks.

Fishmen are my main antagonist. While the world above the waves bickers about politics and money the Kraken and its legions are planning an eventual raid to take over the surface world:

The Kraken Kanaloa is the big bad boss of all things. It rarely involves itself physically, preferring to direct troops in the safety of the deep ocean where nothing can reach. Only if its plans involved the death of something like a dragon would it involve itself personally.

Kanaloa's generals are four Kraken Priests who direct its larger forces. Abzu the Shepherd Druid is in charge of terraforming, exploring inhospitable regions and befriending the local populace to encourage irrigation. Enki the Storm Sorcerer is a magical researcher who hunts down magical items. Marduk the Tempest Cleric is a crazed zealot who acts as the Kraken's mouthpiece in where the humanoids are indoctrinated to the Kraken's cause. And Nammu the Great Old One Warlock is deceptively charming, in charge of Humanoid management and keeping slaves like cattle.

The foot soldiers of the army are Sea Spawn, Humanoids sacrificed by coastal towns or bred in the darkness of undersea cities corralled by Nammu. They're meaningless slaves and often serve as rewards for higher ranking soldiers.

Elite units are the Merrow, brawny and vicious, who go down fighting or don't go down at all.

The cavalry are the Sahuagin, riding their sharks to port cities and storming the land decently well. Some of them have special powers like the Fishmen from One Piece, based on whatever kind of fish they emulate.

The Kuo-Toa are the divine casters, kept in the back ranks but there to heal soldiers as necessary. They give the Kraken demigodlike ability for it has told them that it is a god and they believe it, and their belief makes it so.

And finally the spies, the Deep Scions, heroes captured and converted, who walk on the land and make friends with the PCs to gain secrets and trust while setting up for betrayal.

They were an obscure, primitive, tribalistic race of little note until the rising kingdom managed to contact and somehow befriend them, using them as slow-witted, but tenuous auxiliaries and amphibious to semi-amphibious (a running joke is that they find themselves armed with high-quality equipment meant for regulars due to clerical error) shock troops and foot soldiers. Admittedly, it's not really known how or why they decided to submit to the kingdom beyond the fact that the ruler is extremely charismatic, and they often continue acting on their own devices until someone dressed in blue with the royal sigil orders otherwise.

They actually have a deep spiritual need due to being a purpose-made race created by a minor deity who had winked out of existence due to a lack of mortal worship (their fantastical method of creation meant that their worship, while absolute, was really a poor substitute towards good old fear from humanity), and the reason they follow the kingdom is because their blue uniforms, shiny metal armor, and affinity towards ice and cold vaguely resemble the trappings of their old deity. The kingdom's soldiers are viewed as angelic messengers from the gods, and the princess is either believed to be their god resurfaced or a linear descendant.

The accidental acquisition of armor is believed to be a gift from their god in return for continued loyalty in the face of hardship, and they strive to fight in order to appease the messengers; as a result of their lifestyle they tend to be better disciplined and skilled than the actual human regulars, obvious physical limitations aside, though they have difficulties following complex strategies and tend to over-exert themselves on land.

Anyone remember what fishmen races there were in D&D? I just remember these:
>Sahuagin: "Shark-men", although they don't look that much like sharks.
>Kuo-toas: Mad fish-frog men from the Underdark, expies of the Deep Ones.
>Reavers: An entire race of Creatures from the Black Lagoon.
>Locathah: Bland non-evil fish-guys.

Trident city was founded where two rivers intersect and flow out to the sea. A three kings each founded a city on the different edges of the great rivers. Each wanted to plunder the other's resources. They began to construct bridges across the nigh impassable water. Eventually the bridges met and instead of fighting they realised what they could build together. It was at this point the aquatic races grew tired of the kings taking the rivers bounty for. So aquatic races rose up and invaded the king's cities to took them for themselves. The kings were slaughtered and their names erased from history. All three cities were declared to be one, known as Trident city. It became a foothold for Merflok, Tritons, Kuo-toa, etc... to invade the land dwellers and establish an empire across the coast.

>What are they like in your setting?

Literally take any Fish and give it arms and legs and you've got my Fishmen. Not even remotely Humanoid beyond a somewhat upright posture giving them the capacity to walk on their humanoid legs and carry items in their webbed hands. Like, pic related is a decent rendition.

>Do you use them at all?

They were made by the Fish God Dagon, whom, lacking any sort of creativity or nuance saw the people on the land and thought to himself, "Okay, so it's just animals with arms and legs. I can do that." and then he literally just did that. FishMen are basically his poorly conceived deviant art OC's.

>And if so, how?

Fishmen make living on the coast 'peacefully' or really near any sort of body of water virtually impossible.. Because it isn't just Saltwater Fish or even Fish- Amphibians were included into this uncaring package as well. Really just Animals with grasping hands and 5-6 int, they'll raid and attack communities or even ships if they think they can get away with it with minimal casualties. They reproduce and mature extremely quickly, so they're never in short supply and if anything their fresh water counterparts can very quickly become a massive threat to previously isolated bodies of water... One day you're out there working your rice field and then the next day a Catfish is trying to strangle you.
People often return the favor hunting them for food (the logical conclusion after surviving an attempt at your life by a healthy tuna fish with a stone knife) and devotees of more competent and sociable aquatic Gods (Scylla & Abzu) will often them take them as slaves with their Gods blessing/aid.

They have about a 5% caster rate (10% is usually the norm) just to add insult to injury, so rarely they'll have a primitive priest or a shaman to enable their normally ineffectual efforts.

Natives to a warm water archipelago complete with sunken and sinking temples built eons ago by some time-lost empire. They live in these temples and hire themselves out for deep sea fishing, guides, and locally stationed naval vessels as mercenaries. They have catfish-like facial features. They can survive in cold temperatures but their reactions become sluggish to the point they can't effectively fight like they would in tropical, subtropical, and other temperate climates.

In my head man sized intelligent crustaceans would have a shit ton of smaller shells to make it easier to molt damaged ones. They'd be immortal but not reach a size that'd kill them as quick.

You could have the older bigger members of the species have shells suitable as trade good even. Lobsterman shell armor is almost as hard as steel but doesn't rust, just gotta lacquer it or something.

Could have the coastal lobsterman be a bigger species than the mild tempered crayfishmen from the inland swamps.
Hell, have folks raid them because they just plain taste good. There's your plot hook, tasty lobstermen seeking professional help to clear out local dwarf food buffs.

After the god Sekolah arose in the form of a mile-long shark with her sahuagin armies reveling in her wake, the other aquatic races united to fight for the very survival of their people. After an epic conflict and a little help from a cursed human hero, the problem took care of itself and they resolved to continue striviing together for peace and prosperity. They formed the Spiral Council, a confederacy of merfolk, locathah, tritons, darfellans, and tortles. A floating magical superweapon left half-finished by the merfolk was converted into the Flotilla, a port of call for commerce and diplomacy between the sea and the surface. Tourists abound above the water level, clerks and merchants live below, and scoundrels and scavengers abound in "the Bottoms," a shantytown on the sea floor directly below the Flotilla that quickly springs up anew whenever the council decides to move it.

My fishmen recently scored some wives to procreate with, but they are about to be slaughtered by the party. How can I insist that none of the women were raped before they arrive?
>>
>>61175468
Let them see one who was raped for real and has now gone nuts, make it clear her condition is a consequence of said rape. Then when they meet the other women and they will look still sane, the PC may realize they were not too late. But do not try and railroad them too much: you can give them hints but please avoid infodumping shit on them.

Show them all coralled in some kind of pen or something and have the PC's bust in just as the fish men are picking out their first victim. Or maybe the boss of the encounter is a half-dressed burly male fishman and the party arrives to find a woman chained to an altar or whatever, also in partial state of undress clearly ABOUT to be raped. Maybe specify that she's topless but still wearing pants. Be careful on details though, make sure they count because you don't want to go into too many details less this becomes magical real territory. I am now picturing a confused fishman trying to figure out what part of the human woman is the mating bit, maybe pondering the large protrusions on her chest and not being sure if this one is a female or not.

One of my players fucking torched an entire forest that was surrounding major cities.
Decided to send magical fishmen to protect the nature and extinguish the fire with powerful water magix.
PCs thought they were attacking them and killed them all with multiple crits and well placed spells.
The forest went down and with him half a town.

Of course my little pyromaniacs were already experts on the field and proceeded to torch two more villages later in the campaign, but I didn't send anymore fishmen.
