I have a game idea, I was wondering if /tg could help me with

During Atomic age 1940s or so Earth, a professor/scientist went mad studing a stone archeologists uncovered in the Salt Plains of the American Southwest. He went crazy & locked himself away scribbling on any surface available, in multiple languages, only some of them known. He was later locked up & taken to an asylum. But the mad writing was slowly decyphered leading to a vast increase in scientific knowledge.

Mainly rayguns, space polymers, robotics, & rocketships. The bread and butter of Pulp Sci-fi.

Extra dimentional travel is discovered by using psionics & the human mind to travel between the angles of space. (Basically tesseract)

The mad ravings of the professor also detail coordinates to a region of space accessable now by Angled Space. Upon reaching this location humanity names it the Dagon Sector. In it are multiple worlds & several star systems. Also a singular madness of a black sun, & the horrid vastness of a titanic Old One fetus, dead & dreaming, waiting to be born.

Those who would colonize this place & explore it's ruins & frontiers are called Starblazers. The races are

Human-Just like you but with better hair
Mutant-Mutated by radiation, cosmic energy, or horrific experimentation
Atlantean-Human deviation, from the planet New Atlantis
Lezonian- All woman race, created by scientifically minded women
Rebel Krell- Servitor race for the Old Ones, these are those who seek freedom from their evil society
Robo-Domo- Atomic powered A.I

What would be a good system to use?

Isn't this a bit counter intuitive? Pulp 50s space flash gordon was very optimistic. Cthonian horror conflicts with this a tad too much don't it?
>>
What makes it cosmic HORROR? Big spooky space monsters =/= cosmic horror. Will experimenting with all this new knowledge eventually lead to ruin, degeneration and a new dark age? Does the discovery of the Dagon Sector imply that our previous conceptions of the universe are horribly ignorant, narrow or just plain wrong? Do people dwelling in this place go weird in some indefinable way? Do the families of Starblazers who've been at this a while now harbour some better left forgotten secret? Does an awful secret about the history of humanity dwell amidst the ruins of the worlds in the Dagon Sector? What does the mere existence of the colossal fetus imply about the universe at large? Is humanity in any way equipped to deal finding out about literally any of this?

I mean, your setting sounds really fun, retro sci-fi with cosmic horror, but anything calling itself cosmic horror is a big red flag for me because 9 times out of 10 it's only cosmic window dressing with no horror. Implemented properly it would be really cool.

>Pulp 50s space flash gordon was very optimistic. Cthonian horror conflicts with this a tad too much don't it?
I wouldn't think so. It could be borrowing more of the aesthetics/tech/terms from a more pulpy/retro space vibe, but the themes could different. Hell, keep the propaganda feel of posters and art, but make it just a thin veneer over an ugly truth: mankind is exploring the stars, akin to an ant exploring a kitchen. It's possible that the ant will find plentiful food and shelter from the elements/other predators, but it might also get tortured by a human child or get it's whole colony wiped out.

I understand your hesitation anon.

Okay so imagine a Flash Gordon-esque pulp hero, he twofist punches evil fish men trying to steal our human women & all that, but the more alien shit he sees, & the more he travels through Angled Space he has a hard time seeing the world the way he thought he did. He turns to alcohol. One time on a mission, a space worm burrows into his arm, he doesnt remove it at first, he's a manly man & trying to save people. Later, he lies to Danny his medic, about how it was just a lucky graze. He doesn't know why he lied. In his bunk during that night he hears the worm whispering..

All the perfect physique & lantern jaws can't protect you when you stand in the black light of the Twisting Star. To travel Angled Space, opens your mind to other angles that you would swear aren't there
The robo-domo with tue noodle arms get possessed by alien horrors & goes full HAL. Or something like the Ood in Doctor Who.
>>
>>61051772
One of the big planets/colonies is New Atlantis, an underwater domed city of the future! The people there are slowly being turned into Krell, through dark rituals, exposure to the environment mutating them, experiments, & such. This is why Atlanteans have gills & are adept in the water. (Fish man rape if your into that as well)

Earth government's playing with the new level of technology with reckless abandon

Simple evils like logistics corporations deciding to delay food shipments to a colony & then the colonists turn to canabalism that leads to cosmic horror shit

Lots of Doom-like space marines loosing their shit when dealing with the alien

Planets of the unquiet dead

& All with the risk, that existence is just one hair away from awaking the Old One baby & killing everything

I really like where this idea is going - I have a fantastic fondness for those old pulp sf items, especially book and magazine covers, and the cinema serials. There's just something about a square-jawed, two-fisted hero with a raygun, a robot, and a rocket with fins.

The idea of putting them in a dark and terrifying universe filled with things that regular space travel hasn't equipped them to find is genius, and would be great if run with the right tones etc.

I'm with you on enjoying raygun gothic pulp, but I'd enjoy the opposite subversion. Crossover the genre with cosmic horror and have the Squarejawed can-do optimism triumph.

I have an idea for a Rogue Trader character, which would possibly work best as an NPC, who essentially embodies that concept:
>Retro-future space hero and crew
>Gleeming silver rocket ship. Lands vertically, of course.
>They hail from the early days of the Dark Age of Technology. They're pre-warp tech, but use near-FTL propulsion to get around.
>It's close enough to light-speed to dilate time. During their skips across the Galaxy, they've lost enough time to end up in the 41st Millennium.
>Rayguns and other classic retro-future tech enables them to survive in the hostile setting and never lose their composure.

The contrast of their optimism effortlessly prevailing in the grimdark setting appeals to my sense of humor and would be more fun than having them simply go mad or fall to despair. The effortlessness is essential to land the subversion. Since easy-mode victories are not fun to play longterm, such a character would work best as an NPC that shows up every now and then.

See, I'd play the subversion through bringing the players ever closer to realism, and then dragging them down into the Lovecraftian depths. But I like your idea, which could work well in a kind of Paranoia style. (Reminds me of an old video game called Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters...)

The black Sun is a strange thing to behold. Our not. It's not like a black hole. It's almost like light travels toward it. As if it's presence has reversed the roles of light and darkness. Facing the Black Sun is like staring into perfect blackness. Facing away from it is to be blinded by light. Shadows face the Black Sun, cast by the light at your back.
The phenomenon is related to the strange angles of Dragon Sector, and is localized to some extent, but the range at which it occurs seems random, and no one has ever actually witnessed the crossover when light begins behaving in a sane way again.
Those who have witnessed it first hand say that while the blackness is unnerving, they can't help but be more scared of the light. Or rather, where the light goes when they cross back.
>>
>>61068720
Shadows facing a black sun is a great addition. Approved.

Can anyone think of some cool planets? Or maybe experiments/adventures?
Right now, I'm planning on having the players run adventures on different planets, occationally resting on New Atlantis or Lezonia, maybe a few other colony worlds. A lot of "missions" are for a xenoanthropologist science lady, who will eventually go crazy, join a dead God baby cult & try to perform a ritual to birth it into this world through her. Stopping this ritual (or failing) will be the climax

A thousand or more years ago Hari Seldon used mathematical concepts to predict the end of the galactic empire. This is a common fact accepted by everybody.

What people don't know is that Seldon also predicted exactly WHAT would destroy the Empire - and it sure as Galaxy wasn't human.

Tell me son, you ever thought about just what it is that lurks at the heart of the Milky Way, past the radiation soaked core stars? Seldon found out, and that's the other reason why the Second Foundation has had to keep to the shadows. There's something out there that doesn't want them to succeed.

It's actually 2018 in-setting. The last 60 years since the discovery of the Dagon Stone have catapulted our technology. (Though on one hand it has neglected some tech, like smartphones)

The could definitely be several dark prediction in the Professor's ravings though
>>
>>61070290
A big aspect to the aesthetics of retro sci fi is the absence of miniaturized computer tech.

A lot of very rational predictions regarding human exploration of space were blindsided by advances in computers. Ex: Arthur C Clarke predicted that by the end of the 20th century, all earth-based astronomic observatories would be rendered obsolete (and relegated to use by community colleges!) by ones that would be built on the far side of the moon. That never happened because computer and communication tech improved enough to allow us to operate orbital telescopes remotely.

You can still have computers, but they should be large and cumbersome. In "The Map Makers" by Frederick Pohl, computers are too heavy to use on mass-concious rockets, so they use specially trained human computers to perform mental calculations and data storage while in drug/hypnosis-induced trances (10 years before Dune!)
>>

Dat Chris Foss aesthetic, anon?

>Can anyone think of some cool planets? Or maybe experiments/adventures?
Go mine some classics for planet ideas. Mongo, for instance. Early sci-fi about the planets of the solar system, such as the darkside dwellers of Mercury, the verdant jungles of Venus, Lowell's canals on Mars. Read Bradbury, Edgar Rice Burroughs, early Asimov and Clarke, that kind of thing. Also Dan Dare. Seriously, Dan Dare's Venus is awesome and those old comics have some great ideas. (The darker stuff from early 2000AD through to about 1990ish might be good, too - they had a B-movie feel at times, resurrected Dan Dare, paradise planets with flesh-eating blobs...)

Hey, what's that Stephen King short story about a planet with intelligent sand? Think it's in Skeleton Crew... "The Beach Boys have all been dead for centuries, but this place... it's got Beach Boys religion". Something like that. (And a similar one about an astronaut who finds eyes growing all over his body)
>>
>>61071369
Exactly what I'm going for. Computing will be at around 70-90's at best.

Rocketship & rayguns come from deciphering alien script carved into the desk of the Professor who studies the Stone. Robots came from hieroglyphics scrawlled upon a painting in his room.

With these technologies & the ability to travel Angled Space is what allows humans to colonize, not complicated computer algorithms & such
>>
>>61069185
>Approved
Neat. Let's see what else I can come up with

>A planet much larger than earth, with what, from orbit, seem to be irregular, strange shaped mountains. Once you've landed you see the mountains are recognizably bones, the ground is made of bone dust, and drilling down you find layer upon layer of bone. But, deep down, perhaps through a cave made of ribs, one can find the ruins of a human sized civilization. The question is, what massive creatures came here, and what killed them?
>a planet covered in a lush forest, trees as far as the eye can see. It's beautiful, but unnerving in a way that's hard to put a finger on. Eventually they might realize they haven't seen or heard a single other living thing besides the trees. Staying for a long time might make you sleepy, or want to just sit down for a bit. Staying still and quiet is deadly, as bark begins to grow over you, you become one with the massive forest. Make too much noise and you might attract something worse
>a planet with extensive ruins. Huge cities completely dead and abandoned, at least, they look to be. Exploring the ruins gives an uneasy feeling of being watched. Each room gives the air of having been just occupied, the people having left only moments before, the only indication of being abandoned is the thick layer of dust on everything. Except, if you return to a room you've already explored, you might find things have been moved, yet the dust is undisturbed.

>Can anyone think of some cool planets? Or maybe experiments/adventures?
The Catacombs, yes.

Initial surveys had classified this as a barren world - sulfurous atmosphere, signs of heavy vulcanism in the planet's past, no life-signs detected on the surface apart from a few resilient algae in the steaming mineral sludge that comprised the shallow oceans.

It was a prospecting mission found them - boring through the old long-cooled lava flows in search of any minerals worth extracting, when one of their core samplers broke through into a vast cavity over a hundred meters below the surface. They tried again a little way away - except this time rather than breaking through, the sampler brought up... artifacts. Or fragments of artifacts, at least. Carved and worked stone, metal and glass.

After that they brought in the xenoarchaeologists, did some deep-level scanning, and discovered a whole network of cavities under there - not the mindless formations of erosion and subsidence, but structures - corridors, hallways, rooms and chambers laid out with orderly deliberation, carved into the bedrock itself. Investigation of other likely-looking sites brought back similar results. Imagine Pompeii or Herculaneum, but engulfing New York, London, Beijing and Rio de Janeiro all at once.

An entire civilization, buried under hundreds of meters of solidified lava and volcanic ash.
>>
>>61077931
At first we thought it might be some kind of mass-eruption, some tectonic disaster that had immolated and buried the entire planetary surface. That the populace had sought refuge in subterranean cities implied that perhaps they'd seen it coming, had hastily carved out these shelters and planned to wait out the cataclysm, so they had seismologists, vulcanologists, geologists, experts on planetary geophysics come and find out what happened - and whether it could happen again. So they started looking at faultlines and the old cindercones of the world's volcanoes, and the xenoarchaeologists sent a team into the ruins to start exploring and cataloguing.

It wasn't long before the geo-whatevers reported back their preliminary findings, and that got people paying attention. Turns out that there were signs of construction at the volcanoes, too - enormous shafts bored deep into the crust, lined with machinery constructed on a monumental scale.

Consulting with one of the dig's engineers, their best guess was that it was a system of siphons and pumps designed to draw magma from deep down and pour it out onto the surface in vast quantities. They'd deliberately drowned their world in molten rock. Why? God knows. Maybe it was an act of war. Maybe there was some threat on the surface, something they feared so greatly that they would willingly burn their world to destroy it.

It was around the same time that the archaeologists returned from the depths, and their report was even more unsettling. These creatures had a sophisticated culture, and their skill in crafting was unparalleled - you can see the artifacts for yourself, there's plenty of them on display in the Colonial Museums on a dozen planets. Scenes from daily life, historic events, that kind of thing.Exquisitely-worked, sublime in their artistry - especially the pre-Cataclysm pieces. Made the caches in the Valley of the Kings look like junk-shop detritus.

The post-Cataclysm works were also in ready supply - it seems that their civilisation had survived for some time following the volcanic inundation, but the artifacts are altogether... different. Still beautifully-crafted, but the motifs depicted are unsettling, disturbing - all the more so for the attention to detail that was clearly lavished upon them.

Then there were the remains. The long-dead bodies strewn throughout the silent halls, many with marks of violence upon them, even after all this time - pinned to the wall with elegantly-wrought metal weapons, hewn apart with blades that remain sharp to this day. Some madness had seized them - despair, perhaps, at their predicament, trapped so far beneath the surface of a scorched world. Others had withdrawn to secluded chambers and simply laid down to die, alone.

And the carvings... everywhere there were carvings, on every surface. Lovingly-rendered scenes of carnage, of atrocity, every detail graven in stone and preserved for all time. We know how they died - we know in awful, terrible detail how they died, right down to the last of them slumped against a wall with engraving tools at hand, a tiny, pitiful figure carved into the rock beside it.

We know exactly how they died.

But we still don't know why.

You know, fellas... as much as I love my modern, and usually hard (or hard-ish) sf, there's something really special about the more "romantic" view of space exploration in the examples in this thread. Planets in our solar system that are strange and teeming with life, rather than barren; sleek, graceful atomic rockets, rather than greebled bricks; you get the idea.

True enough. Plus... yeah, reality can almost be stranger than fiction, but the fiction is splendid and almost relateable. Pulp sf has its roots in pulp adventure novels - explorers in jungles, lost temples, continents of dinosaurs, abandoned cities, cowboys, pirates, barbarians, spies, detectives... pulp doesn't discriminate. And perhaps that's easier for non-sf geeks to appreciate. But I just love the sheer bizarre-ness, and the romanticism that we aren't on the only life-bearing world out there. I think I'd rather visit Mongo or the city of Mekonta than Mars...

On the left side is the more colonized space, with New Atlantis & a few other places (need names & ideas)
The southern border is Krell space. The Krell have been at war for a while now.
The Northwest has Lezonia, & unexplored jungle world's & the iridescent ziggurats of some long dead race, a few other colonies maybe.

OP back now. Still at work but leaving in a few hours. What would you guys want to know about?

I've been looking at a lot of different systems. Can slipstream be easily converted?
>>
>>61114788
Converted to what? It's a Savage Worlds game.
>>
>>61115027
It's setting isn't my setting. & From my limited time running Savage RIFTS & looking at Deadlands, I know that there is a lot of odd stuff in Savage Worlds, & balance can be difficult
>>
>>
>>61115350
I don't like Savage Worlds, but if you wanted to list equipment and maybe even some edges from Slipstream into your game you could. Savage Worlds also has horror settings you could steal stuff from.

Play it off like Miracleman--start with a seemingly normal, cheery, silver-age adventure. But something is terribly, terribly wrong.

Question isn't this similar to destiny? Like when the cabal emperor found something more powerful than light and darkness. And how the guardians are essentially fighting back eldritch horrors?
>>
>>61127278
I don't see how. Destiny 2 is about an enemy force usurping the power of the protagonists, leading to a battle for the right to wield its power & be worth of being it's champion.

Dagon Sector is about being retro-future spacemen/Xenobiologists/Xenoarcheologists/Starblazers in a pulp sci-fi setting, doing space adventures amongst Lovecraftian Horror.

Now grab your bubble helmet & raygun that Shoggoth

I could see scuba/submarine armor for New Atlantis though

Let's talk about the Krell.
The Krell are the "Deep Ones" of the Mythos. They have hardened carapace on their backs to protect them, gills & fins, & a hulking physique with razor sharp talons to rend the flesh of anything that dares bother them. It must be said that they favor fully aquatic environments as too much heat/fire hurts them terribly. This has proven to be the one reliable advantage mankind has over them, as our rayguns & climate adaptable bodies allow us to overcome most Krell offenses.

Though seemingly primitive they possess startlingly powerful magics & Deep Psychic Sorcery gifted to them by their watery gods. They used to be more advanced & several ruins hold mechanical marvels. What brought them so low is a debate of many Xenoarcheologist. They have a very strict caste system & theocratic hierarchy. Once contact was made between Mankind & the Krell it was almost immediately followed by outright war, but recently some Krell have turned their backs on their society, joining Mankind, these are called the Rebel Krell

>>
>>61150838
Krell are the dominate alien species in the Dagon Sector (though the Corps will tell you it's humanities manifest destiny to correct that) It is hinted that the Krell used to live on Earth, when the world was flooded. The Salt Flats in America are a dried up ocean after all, & the Dagon Stone is written in part with an ancient dialect of the Krell

IMHO it's a neat little hat-tip, especially as your Krell are psychic, and FP revolved around the whole "monster from the Id" thing - released from a human brain by Krell psi-tech...

Krell can also grow to incredible size, growing constantly through their long, possibly immortal lives, though scientists have not been able find why or how
