/tg/ - Traditional Games

Ok /tg/, I've decided to get into 40k and make a chapter. Issue is I have the creativity of a stale avocado. So I will enlist your help and this
https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Space_Marine_Chapter_Creation_Tables
Let's get rolling /tg/.
>>
Rolled 29 (1d100)

>>60579778
First is chapter origins, why it was founded
>>
>>60579778
Step 1: Choose a Chaos God to worship
>>
Rolled 10 (1d10)

>>60579819
It's actually a d10 and I'm retarded
>>
Rolled 44 (1d100)

>>60579824
You stop that
>>60579839
Founded for a crusade, now it's for when
>>
Rolled 95 (1d100)

>>60579863
37th millennium, so not exactly a new chapter. Now to see who the progenitor is
>>
Rolled 6 (1d10)

>>60579888
Iron hands, that one chapter GW forgets exists. Now for chapter geneseed
>>
Rolled 7 (1d10)

>>60579902
Seems they tried to take out the machine boner, divergent seed. Now for chapter demeanor
>>
Rolled 8 (1d100)

>>60579923
Fuck xenos apparently, suffer not the alien to live. Now we have chapter legends up
>>
Rolled 53 (1d100)

>>60579942
Battle brother from their progenitor, rolling to see what type of warrior he was
>>
Rolled 44 (1d100)

>>60579964
A chief librarian of an iron hands successor ok, rolling for deeds
>>
Rolled 29 (1d100)

>>60579975
Stalwart enemy of chaos, he killed a daemon Prince with mind bullets. Home world properties
>>
Rolled 53 (1d100)

>>60579987
Hive world. Oh boy, now for terrain of the planet
>>
Rolled 6 (1d10)

>>60580001
Ice world, cool. Let's see how they rule the frozen hive world
>>
Rolled 9 (1d10)

>>60580015
Distant rule, because mingling with locals is weakness. Rolling for chapter organization
>>
Rolled 4 (1d10)

>>60580034
Unique organization...that's gonna be a bitch to do. Now combat doctrine
>>
Rolled 50 (1d100)

>>60580051
Stealth. Stealthy iron hands. Oh boy. Chapter unit restrictions
>>
Rolled 16 (1d100)

>>60580073
No devastators, because stealth. Now unique equipment
>>
Rolled 5 (1d100)

>>60580100
Totem charms. Now chapter beliefs
>>
Rolled 1 (1d10)

>>60580110
They revere Ferrus Manus, maybe the totems are his severed head? Chapter strength
>>
Rolled 43 (1d100)

>>60580129
Endangered, apparently they've recently gotten fucked up. Let's see who they're friends with
>>
Rolled 66 (1d100)

>>60580147
The adeptus mechanicus, that makes sense considering their progenitor. Rolling for enemies
>>
>>60580160
Chaos space marines, probably who fucked them up. That's the last roll then
>>
>>60580172
That leaves us with:
Founded for a crusade
Founded in the 37th millennium
Iron hands successor
Divergent gene seed
Suffer the alien not to live
Revere a chief librarian of the iron hands who killed a demon Prince
Home world is a frozen hive world, distant rule
Unique organization
Stealth combat doctrine
No devastators
Totem charms
Endangered chapter
Friends with the machine cult
Enemies with some chaos marines
>>
>>60580244
I'm thinking some sort of ritualistic group of marines carrying totems and icons of the culture of their homeworld. Maybe something like Celtic culture or another culture that was in a colder part of the world. Friends with the mechanicus because they probably defended a forge world and so the mechanicus let's them have upgraded equipment to help their stealth combat.
White death space marine?
>>
>>60579778
Bump
>>
>>60580422
>White death space marine?
white death was the name of a famous finnish sniper in WW2
Just as an idea, fits with the whole stealth theme and sniper scouts are an option
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simo_H%C3%A4yh%C3%A4
>>
>>60579778
Call them Wendigos
Totems, cold, & stealth, a divergent geneseed etc.
They may even pretty on the population of the hive world...
>>
>>60580879
Maybe the population uses them like the boogie man, say that you should follow the law or they'll take you. This way they target criminals and heretics
>>
>>60582453
>>60580879
So they are a Ritualistic and tribal chapter, probably pulling most of it's recruits from the small tribes outside of the city or the urban tribes in the underbelly. They would be like urban legends, wrathful spirits of the emperor that will prey on those that divert from his path. They'd be very individualistic marines, their armour painted and camouflaged and they themselves filled with tattoos of the strange faith they hold.
What of organization?
>>
>>60582518
Each company is a "tribe" & the Scouts are the "Untested" or something like that. Those that don't have a tribe yet. Each tribe is good at a different thing & they work together, but each tribe has it's own small HQ scattered about the planet/system so as to avoid notice. The Fortress Monastery is in the biggest mountains & has a weather controlling device to make the route to it all but impassible. This is where all the tribes convene.
>>
>>60582518
Their librarians would be less wizard like and more shaman/witch doctor. Less reliant on the raw warp and using more primitive methods. Potions, blood "magic", charms, etc.
Leaders would be silent I'd assume, the quiet hunter type. maybe something the chapter undergoes are vows of silence.
>>
>>60582733
What would their trial or test be like, I'd assume passing leads to marine hood

As for the marines, with the connection to the mechanicus I'd say they'd have a lot of personal modifications to become better hunters. Replacing eyes with cameras so they never blink. Replacing teeth with metal teeth, etc.
>>
So we have the Windigos, or something similar to that. They'd probably be reclusive to the greater whole of the imperium and are viewed by the denizens of their own planet as mythical figures, urban legends that steal away those that stray from the emperor's light and occasionally children. They'd have a stealth/ambush focussed combat doctrine which makes up for it's lack of members. Which I assume is from it's high amount of casualties in it's neophytes or from a recent defeat that drained it's numbers.
The marines themselves are probably put in smaller squads between each Company-Tribe. Each squad would be lead by either an elected sergeant or a chapter veteran as the veterans aren't solely put in the 1st company. This would be similar to the old iron hands
>>
>>60582824
Their librarians/shamans send a telepathic vision to climb the deadly mountain passes to those that they deem worthy. If you can make it to the Fortress Monastery, you can become a Wendigo
>>
>>60582824
Also their cybernetics should be called "Eye of the Eagle" "Arms of the Bear" "Feet of the Elk"
>>
>>60583243
What types of challenges will they face and if there's wildlife should the chapter use them in combat? Attack monsters
>>
>>60580244
You basically created the Steel Confessors fool
>>
>>60583609
These guys aren't owned by the admech and they are stealth based as well as ritualistic. Not like the steel confessors save for progenitor and the admech friends
>>
>>60583391
Extreme weather, exposure, giant mountain cats, bears, giant eagles, etc
>>
>>60584211
Perhaps they have to kill one of these things and evade the rest, or have marines hunt them as well. Root out the weak until only the strongest remain. More explaining the low numbers
>>
>>60584696
Maybe each tribes shaman sends out a different vision quest? Maybe one tribe wants you to come to the Fortress with the heart of a powerful beast. Another with an ore found in the mountain, etc?
>>
>>60585437
That'd definitely work. Now we have to choose the number of clans, I'm gonna suggest around 6. What should they be named?
>>
>>60586316
Maybe they should be names like the houses of the Fallen?
Clan of mountains
Clan of confession
Stuff like that?
>>
>>60586393
That could work
Clan of the clouds
Clan of the wind
Clan of the claw
Clan of the frost
Clan of the mountain
Clan of the mist
Etc, maybe we'll use those names
>>
>>60586505
Neato! What should the colour scheme be? I'm gonna assume a completely white look?
>>
>>60586607
Yeah, mainly white. Probably black and grey markings. Then add the individual tattoos.
I would assume the chapter would make use of camouflage. Hunters and all

>>60586653
Red aquila would go well with the whole wendigo look.
I didn't pay attention to the gene seed section.
Do they have any special quirks, like cannibalism or bloodlust?
>>
>>60586706
I put the red since Wendigos are known to be people who ate human corpses.
Sorta works no?

>>60586653
Yeah the red aquila would be a good addition, probably black on the pauldron edges

So if you go with six clans you could do company colors on the shoulder trim

Purple -Sky Clan
Black/Grey -Mountain Clan
Red -Beast Clan
White -Mist Clan
Yellow -Sun Clan
Blue -Frost Clan

I love the red on white look you've done. Each librarian should wear the robe of their tribe. Current chieftan could be from Beast Tribe & be a Deadnaught. The Redtoothed Maw

That works, now with each clan there'd be clan specific markings too, like images of what the clan is named after I assume. And I like the Dreadnought chapter master idea, he'd probably be very angry that he can't eat anymore. Would their be chapter specific roles, with unique organization and all
>>
So we've covered most of the chapter in terms of organization, homeworld, and heraldry. We should probably start working on history, now they really hate xenos but fight chaos constantly. Perhaps in their times of "peace" they go full Predator and send small groups of marines to go trophy hunting on xenos. Trophies are something the chapter would have a lot of I assume. Fits their whole theme that we got going on
>>
Summary of what we got.
Iron Hands successor chapter, it's not adherent to the Codex and is divided into 6 clan companies like their forefathers of medusa. The Chapter, the Windigos, would be stealth doctrine marines with a niche for infantry based fighting, making heavy use of augmented troops with help of the admech. They would hail from a frozen hiveworld of which they occasionally prey on the hive's denizens for game hunts. They would mostly recruit from the tribes outside of the hive or from the hive undercity. The Windigos would be ritualistic and quite individualistic for marines, each brother personally caring for and carving their armour with charms and tattoos of the planet's tribal culture. They would have no devastators in their ranks, mostly likely due to their preference of stealth combat. They'd be trophy hunters and would enter battle with totems and tribal charms. Their clans are as follows: mountain clan, mist clan, beast clan, mist clan, sky clan, sun clan.

Let's go predator vs alien with the back story?
Nids ate the planet, Marines are sent to clear them out & reclaim it, the admech need it for reasons. They spend a lot of their early formative years of the Chapter hunting Nids & taking trophies, since they were a small force on a hostile planet they turned to stealth, etc. They have a big habit of eating their kills, trying to understand them/claim their strength etc.

The Hive cities get made, & the Wendigos go into the still untamed bits of land. They still go on their hunts, now including locals sometimes.

Maybe they've fought some cool fights & such, but recently with the Great Scar, a bunch off Khornate daemons attacked the planet, the Wendigos, fought back hard, but a full 5 tribes we're lost.

Ghost
The chapter master/Warchief himself delivered the killing blow to the lead Daemon, but was almost killed I. The process & is now killing in a deadnaught.

Bump too
>>
>>60597557
Maybe throw in that their geneseed flaw is because of the Nids & that is why they hunger. (I would strongly recommend you make them Blood Angels though to capitalize on the Red Thirst angle)
>>
>>60597835
Well there's so few iron hands chapters having these guys would be nice, maybe they gained a flaw that makes that organ that lets them eat shit for their knowledge is hyperactive. Driving them to engage in vicious combat and spurring their trophy hunting.
For them to be more iron handish maybe they are nearly emotionless when they aren't in combat with emotion inhibitors, when they are in combat they disable the inhibitors and get extra angery
>>
Bump
>>
>>60596613
Going off what you said
Founded in the 37th Millennium the Windigos were assigned to lead a crusade against a Tyranid presence in [unnamed sector] under order of the admech and such. after a long struggle which made up most of their first years as a chapter the windigos began to deviate from their predecessors. As they were a small and outnumbered force they began using stealth tactics, being rid of most of the chapters heavy equipment as that slowed them and made them easier targets of the nids. as the war continued the trophy taking began, as well as the habit of eating their kills in order to replenish moral and strength. These ideas were both inspired by and improved upon by the local tribes that fought off the Nids. the marines adopt these natives, some join their chapter and the culture is adopted. After the campagin to be rid of the nids ends with the great devourer fucking off the imperium builds hive cities and nearby forge worlds. The Wendigos then go off to keep hunting, to keep the culture they adopted and protect even as the hive cities took over the planet. slowly the marines looked to the hive cities for their next game, hunting and killing the strongest of gangsters.
All was going well, they helped the greater imperium time to time but mostly kept to their hunts, becoming mostly isolated. The with the Great Scar and a shit ton of Daemons another campagin took place and resulted in a massive fight for the world. the forces of chaos were pushed back for the time being, they instead took up the nearby moons and asteroids. the wendigos lost 5 clans and their Leader, their Elder Chief struck the blow to the lead bloodthirster/daemon prince and took it's head but he himself fell in the process. now he remains in the form of a dreadnought, the only of the chapter, with heavy modifications for stealth and melee combat so he too can still lead the chapter to the great hunt and beyond

In terms of organization the Wendigos are broken into 5, orginally 10, highly autonomous clan companies that inhabit different parts of the planet's frozen wastes. The 5 surviving clans are as follows: The Sky clan, know for it's aerial strikes and ambushes, The Mountain Clan, known for it's hit and run stealth operations, The beast clan, savage in melee and known to employ the wildlife of the frozen wastes in combat, The mist clan, snipers cloaked in the morning fog. The sun clan, known to use tricks and ploys to defeat prey, and the frost clan which employs the Chapter's most feared veterans and hardy warriors

should the Chapter be built around the concept of "the hunt"

yes, hmm. maybe not because the chapter is about stealth. a custom one, one the admech made for them?
but no inventing, inventing bad
>>
Upon the death of the chapter's hero, he who would become the Red Toothed Maw, the Chapter's senior forgemaster's and techmarines gathered, every clan gathered to remember his deeds to the chapter and give back what he gave. they personally crafted the dreadnought, with the ok from the admech, to be a lightweight and quiet means of continuing the great hunt.
does that work?

I'd a say a dread capable of sitting down would be useful for stealth, hear me out OP

that would work, maybe even from a now dead clan like the ghost clan

What segmentatum are the Wendigos in?
I know they fought some nids and khornate daemons, but what's currently threatening their sector?
>>
>>60602867
not sure, do you have suggestions?
also bump
>>
>>60602862
Definitely go witu a single survivor of a dead Clan. Ghost clan would be most fitting
>>
>>60603108
I'd say Segmentum Tempestus or Ultima Segmentum, Tempestus because there's very little lore and few important things inside of it other than Rynn's World

Ultima Segmentum because it's just so fucking big anything could be in there and anything could take place in it.
As for enemies I'm a sucker for Orks, and due to the Siren's Storm being located in Tempestus Chaos incursions would be probably pretty regular.

My vote for chapter enemy is
>local khornate horde

Also, are the Wendigos more khornate or slaaneshi?
Do they hunt for the challenge or for the thrill? Do they kill because of a hunger for blood or is it pleasurable for them?
>>
>>60604563
Hmm, in order for a ironic contrast with the Iron hands they would do so for the thrill of the hunt, for the honor of it. So closer to slaansehi, but they are still loyal(for now)
>>
>>60604563
Typical wendigos hunt for the pleasure of the kill, but I'd say that this chapter with everything else going for it, would hunt for sport and to show skill. It could even be part of the initiation rites to become a full battle-brother from a neophyte, hunting a particularly dangerous wild creature on their home planet.

Oh, I never realized Ferrus was their progenitor, probably should've read the top lore stuff.
Kinda funny since we gave them bloody hands.

>thrill of it
>honor of it
These seem to be opposites, Khorne likes honorable combat. Khornates NEED to fight while Slaaneshi WANT to fight, I don't mind either one I just want to be clear about this

>>60604629
I like where this anon is going with it, it sounds Khornate in nature but I ultimately don't mind since the Wendigos aren't traitors.

Also, what's the entire name?
Is it just Wendigos, is it White Wendigos?
>>
>>60604660
Currently it's just Wendigos, we could add to it
>>
>>60604660
If it is part of the initiation rites, it could be something like successfully hunting and killing an underhive mutant or surface world beast to show that they were capable of becoming a full-fledged Marine.
>>
>>60604602
>>60604660
If they're an Iron Hands progenitor then what's their stance on cybernetics? If they're into it for the thrill then I'd imagine they'd prefer to be mostly organic, but if they're more function over pleasure I could see cybernetics being common, especially if they are so buddy buddy with the Mechanicum
>>
>>60604856
we mentioned it early, mostly personal things to make them into the perfect hunter.
>>
>>60604856
>>60604892
Maybe they could get different cybernetics to complement each other's strengths and weaknesses, like a pack.
>>
>>60604892
>>60604956
Maybe Beast Clan would be more pack-oriented while the others were more individualistic?
>>
>>60604956
>>60604968
Each clan having it's own form of how it does cybernetics would work.
beast being pack like, as for the others...yeah i don't know
>>
>>60605094
Mist is snipers right?
They could have optic-based ones
Mountain could have strength enhancers while Sky could be endurance and speed ones.

I'd guess that Sun and Frost would be more individualistic as Frost is veterans and elites and Sun is more focused on improvising their way through.

On beast being pack-like maybe they'd have communication packages that feed minute amounts of information to their battle brothers, like enemy positions, if a battle brother's in trouble.
Maybe the captain would be able to relay his orders to a certain degree this way, I'm just spitballing

Redid the 4th Company captain.
Left is new right is old

I gotta ask, what's different names for Sergeant and Captain?
I know that the chaptermaster is called Chieftain, but here's my idea.
>Chaptermaster = High Chief/Chieftain
>Captain = Chief
>Sergeant = Huntleader
Thoughts?
>>
>>60605424
Huntleader could be swapped out with Huntmaster, which sounds a little better in my opinon.
>>
I like the idea of Tyrannids being their hated enemy. Nids are known for eating everything & the prime theme of wendigos are their hunger. So it's a nice dicotomy of man & monster eating one another. I'm not saying chaos can't be one of their enemies, but I feel like Nids make more sense.
>>
>>60605805
That's actually a really good idea, and Hive fleet leviathan is spearheading through Tempestus.
>>
>>60605179
Mist could be fast attack. They roll up on you out of nowhere, & you can't hit them cause they are so fast it's like catching mist

Sun are obviously plasma/fire types

Sky are flyiers

Mountain are fortifiers & use tanks/transports

Ghost Clan are the boogeymen for the boogeymen. Unseen, unheard, & deadly.
>>
>>60605874
Ghost was crushed during the Chaos invasion, and I thought that all of Wendigo was stealthy.
Otherwise I like it alot.
>>
>>60605907
But mist is more stealthy.
>>
>>60605805
that's good
>>60605874
Mist should be snipers i think, Mountain...i don't like fortifaction but it works for now.
and ghost clan is mostly dead
>>
>>60605907
I know. I was the guy who suggested it in the first place. I just felt like expanding on it, & to make it significant that only one is left.
>>
>>60605933
No, I like the sound of it, just reminding you of that.
Here're my current thoughts

>1st Company: Frost Clan
The 1st Company, Frost Clan, is the veterans and elites of the chapter as per usual, nothing special about the special guys, they're extra stealthy and extra effective.
>2nd Company: Sky Clan
Sky Clan utilizes a large percentage of assault marines that, both figuratively and literally, leap into combat, focusing on supporting other clans' operations.
>3rd Company: Mountain Clan
The least stealthy company, Mountain Clan focuses on securing the positions that other clans already acquired through extensive usages of a considerable amount of rhinos and land raiders due to the chapter's relationship with the Admech. Mountain Clan fortifications greatly resemble bushes and natural rock formations.
Well, ones that shoot heavy bolts at you.
>4th Company: Beast Clan
Beast Clan utilizes enhanced cybernetics to work as a pack, using advanced communication systems to funnel information from eachother so the company as a whole can operate as one.
>>
>>60606075
would they follow the chapter master out of Fear or respect? probably both. hell he'd probably be feared by quite a bit of the imperium
>>
>>60606093
Frost clan isn't solely vets as each clan carries it's own vets and neophytes, frost clan is just known as being the most efficent for it's manpower
>>
>>60606106
He's a dread capable of hiding, that's horrifying.
Both probably, they'd respect his extensive experience but also know that any decree he makes can be enforced with extreme prejudice.
>>60606124
Okay, so their gimmick is that they're more effective than the other clans? Got it
>>60606093
>5th Company: Mist Clan
Focusing on reconnaissance and distance-based combat, a Mist Clan sniper is capable of operating in enemy territory almost invisibly.
>6th Company: Sun Clan
I got no clue, OP got any thoughts?
That one anon that talked about them using meltaguns and shit sounded good to me, maybe they'd be outcasts of sorts since they're a clan named after the SUN on a frigid planet.
>>
>>60606196
well, it is kinda crap, what would you suggest for frost clan
>>
>>60606227
I'd suggest that they're the most disciplined clan and that leads to their ultra-efficient operational abilities.
Beast Clan for example can pull off most of their ops pretty well because they're so interconnected it's like fighting a hivemind, to a certain point, but the reason why Frost does so well is that the other Clans have a tendency to get wrapped up in the heat of combat, going for individual glory by seeking out famed opponents, Frost clan hunters are special because they are able to keep their hunger in check by valuing the honor of their company over individual fame.

In other words, they can stay frosty in any scenario, on any battlefield.
>>
>>60606306
would they make use of bionics?
>>
>>60606345
Yep, everyone in the clan wants to be the ultimate hunter, but while most hunters do it for themselves Frost clan hunters do it for their clan.
>>
>>60606362
nice, so what are we missing now?
>>
>>60606227
Frost clan are the hard core survivalists? The kinda guys who don't use houses or any real infrastructure, just consummate wilderness survivors.
