I'm running a game and my goal is no unnerve my players, without going into huge detail about gore or going all edgy with themes like rape or child killing. Any ideas would be appreciated.

For me, it's worm parasites. The thought that these little bastards can live inside things and some can just burst through the skin on their way out just... geeeuugh.

I'm also worried at the thought of someone putting powdered glass into some food of mine and shredding my intestines without my knowledge, or of someone putting pieces of chopped nail shards into some meat and feeding it to my dog or someone else's pet, and doing them in the same way but quicker. I'm terrified of the thought of having something, like a semi-truck or irate druggie with a sledgehammer shatter my shins or knees so I'll never walk right again. The worst, in my opinion, is an accident that maims me but was no-one's fault, so I have no-one to lash out towards or forgive and forget but mother nature, and that bitch doesn't give a shit. There's probably more and I'll pitch in some more later, sorry to ramble OP.

Your intestines can take a lot of abuse. You would either know immediately after biting down that something was wrong and spit it out, or the glass would be so finely crushed that the worst you'd get would be maybe a week or two of light GI bleeding and be treated with a high fiber diet. The pet thing is sick though. Thankfully I have good neighbors.

I was an intern at a mental hospital once. I learned more in my time there than at any other period of my life, a very good if sometimes tense and dramatic experience. When I went to pick a patient on a wheelchair from her wing to the art workshop, I saw a woman standing. I'm not sure of some details, I remember she had only a t-shirt, but I can't recall if what covered her sex from my view was the shirt or the large belly she had. Either way, I was embarrassed, even if I already knew how much personal privacy the patients hadn't. While I waited for the one I came to take for the workshop, someone explained about the woman. The reason she had a belly that looked like a seven-month old pregnancy wasn't a child, but a tumor. Which also explained all those knobs, it wasn't a smooth belly like one sees on expecting mothers. Her doctors had already booked a surgery to remove it, but no one expected much. It was a recurrence of the tumor, and she already had gone through a surgery before. However, it was a mental hospital. The reason she was there for I-don't-know-how-many years wasn't her body, but her mind. In that room, there was one person absolutely oblivious to all this, her eyes towards the ground but never focused on anything. It was the woman herself, completely alien to what was happening to her. Those blank eyes. Seeing them was the most scary experience in my life.

There's a concept in film of the thing you can't see is the scariest. This has been explored in a few interesting ways, and people have found that what really puts people on edge in when they expect something bad to happen, but it never does. The anxiety of anticipation is not released and it makes for a jumpy viewer. Funny Games is kind of a master class on this, never showing the antagonists violent on screen, and giving hints at possible escapes for the protagonists, then not allowing them to work.

Another related technique; showing something that isn't normal, but delaying confirmation that it means danger. We naturally don't like behaviors that don't meet our expectations, but know we shouldn't just attack people who look at us funny. You've probably seen this as "guy who's too smilely" in some media.

It's hard to describe and even harder to depict without images but I'd say that "no longer being on top of the food chain" is the most unnerving shit I can imagine. Death in nature is the stuff that makes Cannibal Holocaust look like Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. Alien really nailed that entire vibe and IMO that's the main reason it was considered so horrifying, the same reason that the raptor scenes in Jurassic Park are legendary. Just imagine, for a moment, what it would be like to be roughly the size of an army man figurine while creeping through a garden.

>Creeping through the mulch of Daisy Valley, you pause and scan your surroundings
>The air is humid and the odor of humus hangs in the air
>You move on, but the hair on the back of your neck rises and you grip your rifle more tightly
>As you crest a small hill, you pause again
>All of a sudden, a blur of motion appears on your right - you can feel yourself start to react, but it's too late
>Two barbed vises of chitin, like steel bands, slam across your chest and thighs as you're bodily lifted off the ground before you can even scream
>As you start to come to your senses after the initial shock a blurry, monstrous head emerges - two gigantic, shimmering compound eyes, fine antennae and tapering down to a surprisingly delicate set of mandibles
>As you start to scream the head looks at you, almost puzzled, and then darts forward and bites your eye out of its socket
>You scream and scream and scream until the creatur's barbed legs puncture your lungs but nothing happens
>Nobody comes, you are not saved, and the creature takes its time eating you bit by bit and starting with the softer bits - your eyes, your tongue, your genitals and finally moving on to your extremities
>You didn't quite bleed out or even lose consciousness before the creature made it to your brain, but you finally die

The natural world gets more and more horrifying the lower on the food chain you go.

When it comes to horror the most important thing is build up. The more status a thing is given the more danger it seems to have.
Imagine for a moment your characters enter a town and outside there is a sign that says very simply “No Dogs” and that’s not a problem for most players so they might ignore it. But then it gets more overt, around town there are “no dogs” signs everywhere. When asked people change the subject fast. Soon the characters belongings are searched for dogs. Every D, O, and G is scratched off every written Wo̶rd̶. Books on dogs are burned, four legged animals are rounded up and caged. People deny it all.
One night the players, perhaps doing something unrelated. They see a man walking a dog and the dog seems perfectly ordinary. But there are no dogs allowed in this town.

In Dark Heresy I once played bug noises in the background at low volume. Later I increase it a bit and added medical machine noises.
As it grew louder they could see the shape of an Astronaut, as he got closer it grew louder.
When it was close enough to see details I hit the rooms light in accordance to the lights of room in the game. When I turn them back on the sounds change to a dripping noise, as the figure got right next to them. It change back to the bugs and medical noise when it continue to walk away.

It's all about subtle details for me. Build up and suspense are things which a lot of people neglect because it's far easier just to use things for shock value like gore or a monster leaping out of nowhere.

I had an idea for a game where the players end up in a no name town somewhere in the United States where everything just feels off. The citizens there just stare at them for a few seconds too long, there are people looking at them from their windows and the gas station they stopped at stocks utterly bizarre food items which have slogans such as "Now with less than 1% corruption!" What the fuck is happening in this town? Who knows. Not knowing is the worst possible thing because you have no idea what to expect or how to protect yourself from it.

Of course, the fuel they get from the gas station fucks their car up and they're forced to stay for the night. That's when they will begin to understand what's really going on.

Time not quite making sense. Characters who start to respond before PCs finish talking. At first it just seems like they're rude, but then you start to realize that, sometimes, they wait too long before responding. And sometimes they reference things that haven't happened, or problems that have already been solved.

It's nothing so simple and easy to understand as a simple loop. Fragments are out of place and shuffled around. And then some people just start failing to register the presence of one of the PCs entirely. If asked at the right times, they might turn somber and say it was a shame what happened to him.

The idea that without constant checkups and maintenance insanity can and most likely will set in before you realise anything is wrong. It's easy to excuse your own behavior or shortcomings, but what if that chore didn't just slip your mind? What if you weren't just having a stressful day? What if what you see as personal growth or just changing over time is actually a slide into becoming completely antisocial? You spend enough time alone or in a bad environment and you can completely dissociate without realising it. People with schizophrenia aren't crazy because they hear voices, they're crazy because they forget it's their own.

some NPC's your PC's like start using a symbiotic companion, at first it seems like a purely great thing for them, it makes them stronger and fixes a problem in their life, maybe it fixes a broken leg or something. From the start they praise the symbiotic assistant, but as time goes on and on they get more and more pushy about trying to get other people to try it. Their personality changes, not necessarily for the worse but it still shifts and twists. Soon youll find them doing strange things in the middle of the night, tasks they dont even understand, only that they need to do it.

I came to the conclusion that my parent's house is lightly haunted years ago for similar reasons.
I was always unnerved in their basement, actually screamed during a power outage while I was down there, in my 20s. On multiple occasions noticed our dog staring down a hallway towards the laundry room. Once had a night that I was 100% convinced something was on the other side of my door when I was 17 or so.
I put it down to being scared of the dark. Then I moved out and found I'm completely fine in the dark in almost the exact same situations.

The best part of your fear of mushrooms is that by the time you've seen them, it's already too late. If the fruiting body is mature, you're already inhaling the spores.
Let's just hope those fantasy mushrooms are as gentle and benevolent towards us as the real ones. They could be so much crueler than they are.

List of commonly unnerving things that aren't too gore-y or whatever:
-Body horror - foreign action in your flesh. Parasites and stuff like those lotus shoops work. I also remember a particularly unnerving greentext about a rain that caused an eye to sprout on whenever it hit - which got unnerving when a drop landed on the back of a player's hand.
-Uncanny valley - things that are almost human but miss the mark somehow. Because it's not a visceral thing (unless you use visual aids maybe, and even then), this only works if you can make them think about it. This can sometimes work in reverse too - something that is clearly not human, but has some trait that is clearly human, can be very unnerving.
-The unknown - includes fear of the dark, the deep sea, and the like. A situation that feels dangerous is more tense if you don't know the nature of the danger. I find this works best if they know a little but not a lot, rather than nothing - "catching a glimpse" of motion seems to be very effective in generating worry. Don't overuse this, it get less effective the more often you do it.
-Loss of control - taking away agency from a player is generally pretty lame, but there are still ways to play around with this:
>inability to speak of a particular thing
>body double insert it into the character's personal life, think nWoD Changeling
>actions taken by the character's body while unconscious, like sleep walking or blacking out - DOES NOT need to be important actions that will make the player mad to be creepy, just having them wake up having done something not too important in their own room, like write something or having gone through there own possessions, can be plenty creepy. Remember, the goal is not to hurt to the character, but to produce a feeling of violation.

The biggest weapon you have is the players' own imaginations. Ultimately, you can't actually scare them, they have to scare themselves.

Insects crawling under flesh.
>>
>>59264573
Also, to elaborate a bit, you may notice a common theme between the first and the last there: violation of the sacrosanct, the perversion of the familiar. Taking something which is typically considered safe and familiar and making it something foreign and dangerous can really get at people. Your body is familiar, so make it unfamiliar and remove that feeling of safety. Your agency is inviolable, but what if it isn't? You can extrapolate this principle to other things which are associated with familiarity and safety. A beloved pet, family dinners, the sanctuary of your home - the idea is not to destroy the thing, but to strip away that which makes it comforting. You can even use something like memories. You can't pull something like Doctor Who's Silence, because you can't really enforce the sort of dramatic irony that makes it terrifying, but you can have something that inserts itself into the character's memories. Even if the character themselves knows the memories haven't always been there, it raises doubts - which memories are the real ones, the old or new? - which makes them feel less secure.

>town somewhere in the United States where everything just feels off.
I like it. Very Shadow over Innsmouth.

Socially transmitted fear. Have all the NPCs in your game act just "off" enough to make it clear that they're terrified of something and equally terrified of it showing. Bonus points if you never actually reveal what's behind it all, and give the players a red herring to take down and a reward that makes the players uncomfortable.
>>
Anything to do with perception. A person is controlled completely by what they perceive, so anything that fucks with that, like Alice in Wonderland syndrome, is pretty creepy.

Also the concept of losing yourself. Whether that's through mental disease, physical disease, body horror or something else, being robbed of who and what you are IA pretty horrifying. Like in Annihilation, when that one lady is vaporized and turned into that freaky space womb, just the idea that she was broken down and used to create something else is pretty horrifying.
>>
>>59265457
Or even better, have it turn out that the players are what everyone's so scared of. They're the monsters and they don't even know it.
>>
>>59258079
I'm taking part in an experimental Monster of the Week game, where me and fourteen other strangers create and control monsters that are being used in the game, completely unknown to the games parties. So basically fifteen strangers against each other and an unwitting party of players. Anyway.
The monster I created has powers involving illusions, and I've been working on taking over this one small mountain town in Minnesota, trapping everyone in the town in individual illusions. I am hoping to craft the town into the kind of situation, where if the players ever get to it, it will be a creepy experience where the towns folks will act off as each one's idea of what's real is being manipulated, and the fact that the players themselves may get caught in the illusions too. So a scenario where no one can be sure what is real.

The worst/best part from the remake was when they took all the machinery off Robocop to show what was left of him and it was just a brain, his face, his lungs and his hand. Hands.

Parasites, diseases, animals, fire, drowning - all of these things are terrible, yes, but they are autonomous.

But hands?
Hands are deliberate. Hands have reasons, have goals. Hands are strong, hands are precise. Twisting, gripping, prodding, shifting, always in flux, always in action, focused, relentless.

Hands are inescapable.

anon I think that you're viewing this from only one aspect of horror; disgust. A lot of the things talked about in this thread are things that trigger disgust and other emotions that can be important for horror, but do not do the job alone. There's a difference between a documentary/series of visuals and a horror film that has the same visuals.

What's missing is fear, which is created in some of the best horror films through atmosphere. It's knowing/believing that something is wrong, that there is danger but you can't identify it. It's having detail, but not enough to know the whole picture. It's why one of the first rules in a horror monster movie is wait to reveal the monster, giving only glimpses of it.

One last thing is what creeps one out can vary, so I would go for some more general ones (unless you know your players fears very well, then you can play to them), but try using those visuals as part of letting them know something is wrong without letting them know exactly what.

Just imagine feeling those little bastards writhing just under the skin of your throat and every time you weakly try to claw at them to get some relief from your impending asphyxiation, you feel them writhe deeper, away from your bluing fingertips. As a last resort, you take a sharp object you no longer remember the name of and cut them out of your skin, first one by fat one, but then wholesale with giant gashes. And as you slowly slip out of consciousness for the last time, you drop your sharp thing, but too soon; you still feel a few behind your ears. And you wish you could cry.

Have you considered that you are the only conscious being in this "reality", and that every post you see, ever talk you hear, are all just messages from layers below in the true reality trying to help you wake up? All the automaton that walk around you are just for show, and the ones that talk are built to give hints? Every moment you focus on is just another message, they're trying to tell you something, but what?

You were never born, how can you prove that? The word was made yesterday, you've been in a coma for just 2 days now, there's still hope but you need to WAKE UP.

True horror is the unknowable, the unproveable. What if there is a hell? What if you're in it? That haunting uncertainty defines that evil feeling we call "horror".

They start small, you know. Too small to see. And you can only feel them when they move, and climb, and sink, and eat, but those are still so slight. Scratching doesn't kill them. You stop feeling them after a good scratch because the sensation of the scratch drowns out the slight itching.

I started getting really fucking bad acne when I was 12. Over the past ten years, I've never lost them. They're mostly scars now, which is great, but in middle school? Oh man, you don't know fear until you have a dream about a wasp nest in your back and rush out of bed, trying to sob as quietly as possible so not to wake the family, just to see a big zit started to bleed for apparently no reason. It wasn't that I slept on my back and popped it. I always sleep on my stomach and side. Try explaining that one to an adolescent.

How?
In "Rats in the wall" by Howard P Lovecraft, we never find out what the ominous forces are, or why things are happening they way they are. We're left with hints but no results. Admittedly they did show the undergroud death-cult at the end of that so i guess there was an indirect payoff.

Just seems like shitty payoff to have someone walk a dog and have nothing bad happen to them.

I always like the quiet kind of creepy. Whenever I run a campaign I'll let the players find things a little out of the ordinary at first. People acting a little off, maybe defensive or deflective from questions. Tension mounts, they'll find some clues, but nothing really specific. Just vague information, maybe a shell casing left in the mud, or a bit of fabric from some blue jeans at the edge of the woods. The entire time I'll run the session I'll play things like this in the background:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UChzxK9gknM
As things start to escalate further I switch into Dark Ambient music, trying to get the vibe as heavy as I can.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpmAD4gcLMo
The last thing you want to do is reveal the threat. Show how threatening it is without revealing the threat, is what I'm saying. Bodies strewn across a field, a man ritually sacrificed with his skinned face placed in his hands which are resting upturned in his lap with his legs crossed beneath. A massive hole in the ground, and across the land leading to the sinkhole is massive indention, like something was pulling itself towards it. It's all about atmosphere, you can make anything creepy, it doesn't necessarily even have to be intentionally creepy things.
>>
The slow reveal of something having been wrong and creepy all along, but the characters finally notice, best if too late.
I remember a scene from a book, in which an ancillary character eho has been around for a bit occasionally repeats the phrase "here we come". In one quiet, should-be-safe moment, she keeps saying here we come as others are having a conversation about how to find the Big Bag Monster. It happens about three times before attention really gets drawn to it, the main character gries to asks what she means, before she just starts chanting it and then twitching, and in "here we are here we are HERE WE ARE RICHARD", then badness happens. It was well built up, gave me chills.

I usually play noblebright campaigns because that's what my group likes, but in one session our GM managed to creep us all out by describing the fate of some captured angels being tortured for their feathers (which have magic properties).

I can't remember many of the details, but it was ultimately very visceral; gore does work. There was a lot of description of flayed skin, bits of ripped flesh, bits of metal sticking out of limbs, mangled faces, missing fingers... that sort of thing. Also the fact that none of them actually showed any signs of pain.

I'm usually quite resistant to 'shock' horror, so I guess what really hammered it in for me was the lack of life underneath it. GM described them as physically alive, but not really 'alive', inside, if you get what I mean.

At one point our wizard accidentally gave one of them consciousness again and, after thanking her, opted for suicide. Wasn't pretty.

Dangerous Visions, a book from 1967, is a collection of short stories that were meant to be as offensive and controversial as possible. Its age is on display, but holy fuck are some of the stories twisted.
Some highlights:
http://will.tip.dhappy.org/blog/Porn%20Recommender/.../book/by/Miriam%20Allen%20Deford/The%20Malley%20System/Miriam%20Allen%20Deford%20-%20The%20Malley%20System.html (One of my players went damn near catatonic when he found and lived through Shep's memory)
http://will.tip.dhappy.org/blog/Porn%20Recommender/.../book/by/Robert%20Bloch/A%20Toy%20For%20Juliette/Robert%20Bloch%20-%20A%20Toy%20For%20Juliette.html and its sequel http://will.tip.dhappy.org/blog/Porn%20Recommender/.../book/by/Harlan%20Ellison/The%20Prowler%20In%20the%20City%20at%20the%20Edge%20of%20the%20World/Harlan%20Ellison%20-%20The%20Prowler%20In%20the%20City%20at%20the%20Edge%20of%20the%20World.html

I ran a Numenera game based on it and my players were constantly flipping their shit. The very first session to set the tone was based on this story. https://genius.com/Philip-k-dick-faith-of-our-fathers-annotated (It's kind of long, but it's a trip and a half)
One player filled Chien's role, everybody else was Tanya. When my Chien went to report his findings to the other PCs, he was so goddamned stunned, he basically refused to tell them anything. Another PC had "Sees Beyond" and stared into his eyes to try to see what he had seen. She saw the Entity *inside* his eyes and she was able to have the same conversation with It.

Sure, but there's also the thing that a lot of people would also find it intriguing.
It's because the atmosphere is built so well. Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3, while obviously scary, are also immensely fascinating because they are so meticulously crafted in their presentation.

Describing violence has never been as bad as seeing the aftermath of violence. No matter what I described it wasn’t as bad as whatever the players cooked up in their head as they tried to piece together what happened.

One investigation into a haunted murderscene the players freaked them out when they went into the bathroom.

>Dimly lit
>All tiled
> Very spacious
> Most alarming thing in the room is some sort of pulley system hanging over a drain
>Player moves to investigate the pulley rope above the drain
>Slips on wet tiles, falls to the ground
>As they get up, grab a hold of something mushy like an old damp towel
>Now standing they check out what they’re holding
>Tangled strands of hair
>Realize their hand is slick with blood
>See the patches of skin still dangling from it

They still call me fucked up after over 6 months so it must work well.

Related but distinct from what you wrote; have you guys ever taken a couple of minutes and actually thought about teeth and fingers?
The former is basically small but numerous bone-like protrusions of varying shapes in an otherwise wet and fleshy hole.
The latter are short, thin and squirming-yet-weirdly-rigid tentacles at the end of long limbs.
That's some real-life body-horror shenanigans.

>House centipedes.
Why did I google that while watching porn on the other screen?
>>
>>59259171
No. I spent time studying them six years ago or so, and their society was extremely rigid. We're also talking about just the Mexica of Tenochtitlan, not the entire "empire", was just two cities allied with Tenochtitlan and all the vassal cities that payed tribute to them. What we know today as Mexico functioned more like the city-states of classical Greece, although it's not a one-to-one comparison. The sacrifice rituals are often overestimated as well. Don't get the wrong idea, it absolutely happened and it was a hideous affair, but it was always a very organized affair (if we're talking about the sacrifice of captives, they were taken in pre-arranged "Flower Wars") and depending on your lot it could be a great honor.
Another thing to note is that not all the gods asked for or required sacrifice. There's a legend of Quetzalcoatl (yes, that Quetzalcoatl) refusing to accept human sacrifice, and instead only taking offerings of flowers and butterflies (quick note; the pre-Columbian Mexicans fucking loved flowers, they had a huge perfume industry as well). The big one is really Huitzilopotchli, the patron of the Mexica people. He was a massive asshole, and the story of what he put the Mexica through isn't super far off from what Yehowah put the Israelites through in the book of Exodus- just a little more "we're going to die please fucking do something" and less "Can we settle yet we've been circling the holy land for 20 years".
Original point, though; society was strict. The only people that could move around at all were a special class of merchant spies that the Mexica sent to other cities they planned to war with. If you were in with them, you could dick around and had a fair degree of autonomy, but otherwise you were probably just a farmer and you would be detained if you visited a relative a city over without permission.

People who attempt suicide via gunshot to the head and survive. It happens more often than you would think. I remember hearing a story from a nurse who saw some woman come into the emergency room and it went something like
>late night
>woman is rushed in, suicide attempt
>gunshot wound
>face and front of head is mostly gone
>pieces of jaw still present
>she's still awake and can hear everything
>after trying to figure something out doctors decide she's a lost cause
>"pull the plug"
>she starts breathing faster, heart rate goes up
>she heard it too

It's because sucking on a pistol is a very hard way to kill yourself. Shotguns are easier since they fuck up SO much, but pistols are pretty contained in their bullet trajectories, but it will still fuck you up. I seem to remember that if you're using a pistol, you want to put it against the side of your head, and not the temple because it's more likely that your angle is too far forward, and it'd just mutilate your eyes and brow.

I always wondered but can't find an answer.
Do you only get Kuru if you eat the brain, or do you get it eventually by eating the meat?
In other words, would a human be capable of cannibalism without negative side effects or would it be a delayed death sentence that ends in you being comatose and decomposing in your own shit?
>>
>>59305486
You get it faster from eating the brain, and slower from eating the normal meat.
>>
>>59305603
But it is unavoidable ?
>>
The thought of what it really feels like to be burned alive.
>>
>>59305619
Technically yes, if you find a chemical process that removes all the prion vectors. But practically, no, it's inevitable.
>>
>>59305693
Could you elaborate on that ?
For example, if a person was to eat other people and regularly went to a hospital that were willing and able to treat him/her, (if such a medical option exists), they'd be able to eat people for their entire lives? Or do you mean, chemically removing that shit from the meat in a laboratory and then consuming it?
>>
>>59305773
I meant removing the prions from the meat in a laboratory. Currently, we have no methods to treat the disease. Are you one of those refined cannibalism anons from a few weeks ago?
>>
>>59305846
No, I'm just a person with questions about ridiculous shit and a serious interest in special/rare diseases.

>>59305773
A lot of misconceptions here. Kuru is not like, "eat a human, you're fucked!" You have to eat someone with a prion disease. If they don't have a prion disease, it's like eating any other meat. And guess what, most people don't have prion diseases. Once you get it though you're totally fucked.

Being helpless. Whether trapped, or chased by a monster you can't kill, or put into a situation where the tools you have CANNOT help you escape or survive. That'll do it. You can't just describe freaky stuff, you have to actually put me in danger.
>>
Kuru is the same as CJD, Mad Cow, Deer Wasting Disease, etc.

It exists mostly in the brain, but can go to any part with a blood supply. It is impossible to destroy in food without also destroying the food, and nearly impossible to remove from objects it gets on.

It has nothing to do with canabalism per say, it is just once intoduced to a population of any creature that engages in canabalism, it is almost impossible to stop because it can take decades to manifest.

In England, it was literally easier to kill every single cow in the country than it was to try to control. And to this day, you cannot donate blood in the US if you may have been exposed to UK beef during the time and the years leading up to the outbreak, because you may spread the disease through your blood.

I got a few fears, but mainly being something watching me and waiting for a chance to strike. But there are two things that are

>Mirrors
>Darkness obscuring faces

Now these two go hand in hand because of this. If you want a good scare go into your bathroom and turn off the light. Look into a mirror for a few minutes directly at yourself. Mirrors retain light well and lose it slowly over time. So you will see the light fade away from your face until only certain features are lit.

If this doesn't scare you then make a few faces. I did this when I was young and jesus fucking christ I have never been more scared. Not even when I let the fear get to me on if someone was watching me.

It's called being alert, you WANT to see that when you're in a creepy situation. I go quiet as fuck and really focus whenever I'm creeped out, which happens a decent amount because I like camping and I'm also easily spooked.

I get bitched at by my friends because I'll often tell them to quiet down and then sit staring off into the darkness like there's a stick up my ass for several moments until someone disturbs me.

>violation of the sacrosanct, the perversion of the familiar
Couldn't agree more with this. One way I've found out of doing effective horror is to first make your players familiar with the setting and characters, and then slowly twist it more and more until they feel totally alienated from what they once thought normal.

For example, in one CoC campaign I handed out different information for each player that described the relation of their characters to the other PCs and various NPCs, which started to get them to connect. Then I also gave them (without telling) 3 in-game days for them to explore the town, the mansion (where they would ultimately be stuck inside of with other npcs) and the setting, and try to investigate the few mysteries I've presented.
By that time, they already knew their way around well enough to think they'd know what to expect, but they were wrong. In the 4th day, I unleashed the evil behind the scenes, which was basically John Carpenter's The Thing, with the difference that mine didn't need to eat someone to become that person. Took them a long time to find out exactly what was happening, and they were very distressed all the way through, especially because my "thing" was much more of a stealth killer than Carpenter's. They only got a look at it in it's insanity-inducing shape in the very end of the scenario.

The best part, in my opinion, where they also caught a glimpse of it, was just when they had found out it was killing and probably mimicking people's appearance. They were in the 1st floor hallway trying to get to the workshop, when they found the corpse of a girl they were just chatting with in another room.
They panicked pretty hard, and immediately went back there and fired about 5 shotgun shells at her. After they thought they had managed to do it, one player looked back over his shoulder to the hallway, just to see the door slowly closing, the "corpse" peeking at them from the crack before it slammed shut.

I think there's a general aesthetic appeal to seeing cute shit get suddenly dark. I think that's why almost every Kirby boss turns into an eldritch abomination with a blood curdling scream or bleeding eyes or other shit that would be edgy in a normal artstyle. The later games are basically playing it up by implying Kirby is one of those abominations who just remains cutesy, possibly made from the same material as most of the villains
