I'm gonna be a Wizard in a fantasy world inspired by Samurai Champloo. Any of you guys have ideas for Magical incantations that rhyme like Rap?

Thing is, it's easier to do things like that in audio-visual medium, rather than in something that's mostly verbal like roleplaying games.
It can work, but it's not guaranteed.
>>
>>59222279
I dunno, I can see it working if you make the right tone or plot for the campaign. Like a big fantasy city setting, but you focus on the poor zones, the wars between gangs, guilds and such.

Make sure to emphasize Power Words. The ability for a sick rhyme wizard to be able to throw in a word that causes physical and magical effects mid-flow is some heavy shit.

As for tone and shit, you know what you should look at. The Warriors. Do The Warriors, but with rap and fantasy.
>>
>>59223077
So, Gangs of New York, but with more modern dungeon-punk sensibilities?
Ran a PF campaign that started in Kaer Maga kinda like that, but then it went into SPAAAAAAACE.

Here's two quick spell incantations.

>Put the wind in your heels and a pep in your step
>Kick the fire to your heart and put it straight to your rep
>You gotta get getting, cause there's no time to waste
>Since you only got a minute left, I just cast HASTE.

>Escape is impossible, dodging? No obstacle.
>Cause with a point of my finger your survival's straight farcical
>1d4 magic orbs cut through the air with a whistle
>So get ready to die to my MAGIC MISSILE.

I-i'll see myself out.
>>
Bump, because holy fuck I like this.
>>
>>59223077
Maybe have a functional "Rep" mechanic? Some kind of mechanical measure of your standing and the power you command within the city? Make your whole adventure reliant on how it interacts with other higher-rep organizations in your bid for power.
>>
>>59220808
I know you're pressed up against the wall
Rollin' your tongue
Havin' some fun, keepin' it loose
But I need to know, I got no time to sleuth
so by the power of Helm, I command ya'll
Speak the TRUTH

While we are on the topic, I recently played a spelljammer oneshot as a hip-hop cleric.

I have the gaudy Tupac necklace I wear to some games as a joke/good luck charm, and so I brought it to this new game. I came with a friend and told her that it would be my holy symbol, and I only revealed it halfway through the oneshot. In the end me and another friend described our characters as wearing bandannas and we flipped of some cops before flying away (at a lower altitude because we're low-riders) and blaring hip-hop as we went into the sunset.

The world that we are playing works like this:

>Setting
Capital of an empire, city is divided among many distrincts, and the lowest ring is the poorest district, most players started there.

It has kind of a japanese feel, mixed with renaiscense. There are guns, but they are rare, but usualy if you are a top fighter you will be able to cut bullets in the air.

>Casting
On the setting all magic is done with rhymes, the oldest and most sophisticated characters have a more "haiku" style casting. Meanwhile, my characters is part of the lower class that use the more modern "rap" style casting.

Usualy the better your rhymes, or the fastest you can rhyme, the more powerful is the spell (we were not going to really do the rapping while playing, but fuck it, I made the thread to get some ideas and actualy do it).

So basicaly, the best "arcane rappers" are basicaly celebrity.

They engage in "magic duels" that are basicaly rap battles. It comes in 2 variations, a non violent one (where you just cast ilusions while you insult your adversary), and a "I will sing thinder and lighting into you".

>Players
You have my wizard that comes from the lowest circle, trying to make a living with sick rhymes

There is a fighter that tried to make a living by being an honest salaryman, but now wants revenge against one of the gang leaders of the city, and to do so he turned into crime (but tries to not hurt any inocent person)

And we have a graffiti ninja, player has yet to do his backstory. He fights with some kind of break dance.

There is also a town guard from the highest circles of the city, disguised among the new gang members, to try to hunt down the leader of the organization.
The part of the city where we start is basicaly run by organized crime and gangs. The actual leaders of these ilegal organizations live on the highest circles of the city.

So far, very much thanks for the rgymes anons.

>>
>>59227784

>>
>>59228274
The system actualy let you have plenty of creativity with how you call or cast your spells.

It has things like "Onslaught" that is basicaly "hitting you enemies in their bodies or mind with some kind of energy" - and the player usualy can fluff what kind of energy he wants - or even how to name said attack. So if you want to send him ilusions to cause mental damage, you can, if you want to cast a fireball, you also can. So basiacly, perfect for using creativity.

Other magics include basicaly an arcane shield made out of spirits. Magics to increase damage, to create sudden flashes of light and so on...

Right, from the sounds of it, the important part of spell-casting is the beat and rhythm, and the speed and precision with which you can deliver it. By building flow, a rhyme makes a spell more powerful.

Haiku magic is the oldest and most reliable because it's formulaic and has just three lines, meaning it's quick and easy.

Free Styling is difficult and dangerous because the potential backlash of dropping the flow could kill you.

I'm with you on this, my dude. I'm into this idea but you should just court the theme and aesthetic, and play some hip hop beats instead of stock fantasy music during your session, don't do magic rap battles or shit like that. Unless you and the members of your group are actually good at rapping then it's guaranteed to be cringe.

And if on the off chance you and your group actually are qualified to run an urban hip hop fantasy RPG that isn't made of cringe, please record it and make a podcast so I can enjoy it.

>>
>>59230577
Hip-hop is defined by four major elements: Bboying, DJing, MCing, and Graffiti. Rap is a small subset of one of those elements, and thus a small part of hip-hop culture (MCing).

Rap is not necessarily Hip-Hop, but Hip-Hop can include rap.
>>
>>59230385
I mean, I think the rule of thumb should be "if you can do it, then do it." If somebody's shit really is fire then they should go ahead, but making it a core part is just a recipe for disaster. No different than bards singing in regular fantasy settings.
>>
>>59230716
I’ll just stfu now....
>>
>>59230892
I know I'm being pedantic, but that's what makes Samurai Champloo such great representation of Hip-Hop culture, because it includes almost all of those facets, and blends it perfectly with the setting.

Unlike Devilman Crybaby that *happens* to feature a rapping character.

Pardon me, dear sir, it appears you are "dissing' me.
I think that's quite rude, so how 'bout an epiphany:
Roses are regularly ready when ripe,
so put away your petticoat, we're in for a fight.
You're red like an ass, you classless baboon,
you look like a dandy in your fragrant festoon,
but beware of bees when you succumb to consumption
because have an elementary lack of good gumption.
Dedication, my chap, is how you succeed,
whether black blue or white, it should be rhymes that you bleed,
but you proceed like a peasant, you petulant twit,
and I don't expect much of a rebuttal, with that "rapier wit".
So let this be a lesson on cause and effect,
because right now it looks like you got gentleman wrecked.

>>59280561
It seems like it could be fun if implemented well, though maybe it's a bit difficult to do. Sounds like your setting's "rhyme casting" is more focused on the quality of the rhyme, where as the Finnish equivalent in the Kalevala is more about how deep the truths you sing are. There's a famous example of one of these duels where young and boisterous Joukahainen challenges ancient Väinämöinen and gets sung into a swamp.

Your system sounds better from a game mechanic stand point though.

Dwarven style is all about that rock solid beat and flow. Dwarves don't do much flourish, but when they rap its on point and full of lots of lyrics that build upwards on themselves. Dwarven wordplay has a lot of callbacks to previous verses, throwing back references and burns that get more and more elaborate as the verse goes on. They also have lots and lots and LOTS of rap feuds. Dwarven feuds are the stuff of legend, and will cross over generations. The Book of Grudges is real.

Elf rap is all about wordplay and flutters about a lot. Elves will syncopate beats and throw in bridges like wildfire, because they're more concerned about the sick alternating slant rhyme scheme they thought up than with having a steady rhythm. Still, elven rap can be some seriously impressive shit when it gets down to it, and the grandmasters of it have had a long, LONG, time to practice their flow.

Dragon/Dragonborn rap is fucking bullshit, because they don't have lips and can do some absolutely insane circular breathing to keep on going.

Ok, here's an idea, casters would have to rap a bar for each level level their casting (5th level spell = 5 bars, ect), and for counterspell you specifically have to diss. For class flavor I'd probably make a bard/wizard hybrid class for players to use, weather you want to make it harder for casters by making them unable to reuse spell raps is up to you.

Well, I think one rap god is too few, you need at minimum two, though I will describe three:

Rap God of Avarice and Swag:
>Buff, really fucking outrageously buff with like bulging trapezium muscles and really svelt delts, wears a black wife better
>shaved head, pair of shades, one of those weird beards that outline the jawline into a goatee, but with that classy fade-into-spectacles line cut up by the ear
>wears a pair of the freshest kicks known to man, solid gold hightop AF1, and is covered in giant chunky bling. His sunglasses are blinged out to all fuck too, the mere sight of them bitches will blind you
>His grill is hooked up to a flamethrower so that he literally spits fire
>His rap style are hood anthems like DMX where you don't really need to be good at rap, you just need to say catchy bullshit and look like a rapper

Rap God of Knowledge and Rhyme:
>Tall, skinny, unassuming. Maybe Japanese or white, but either way he's lanky as all fuck, constantly smoking a joint
>always wears a hat, extra baggy t-shirts with old 90's style graphic designs on them, khakis, pair of old tims with no laces, tounges hanging out.
>carries a rhyme powered samurai sword, known for decapitating entire audiences with a single swing
>raps MF Doom/Wu-Tang stream of consciousness style beats with an outrageous assortment of rhymes. Likes gritty old-school samples and talking about philosophical bullshit.

Rap God of Future and Flow:
>Crazy fucking neon nigga, looking like he walked out of some retrofuturistic concept art for The Fifth Element meets Bladerunner meets a fuckload of acid.
>Changes his outfit every fucking occasion, never wears the same thing twice, except for a pair of shades that make him look like robocop
>The producer, his raps are more about sound than substance, but this guy drops beats so fat they cause earthquakes
>It is said he has a secret beat that can stop time and leave an enemy rapper stunned and cotton mouthed.
>>
>>59297515
I would simplify it with a god of Image (representing gold chains and thick asses, for whom talent is irrelevant), Production (skinny white kid who doesn't rap, isn't from the hood, he just sits around making legendary beats) and Rap (encompassing both flow and lyricism).

I could see the the gods of Avarice/Swag, Knowledge/Rhyme, and Future/Flow being potentially saints under the greater god of Rap. Perhaps some kind of choir of sick rap demigods, and a choir of departed OG's to sing them to they rest.
>>
>>59298623
I'm thinking more of a 2 Chainz type would be more appropriate, but they'd always be seen or depicted in art with a couple of thicc bitches.
>>
>>59298568
I think we’ve well passed the point where being a skinny white guy is no longer synonymous with not living in the hood and being unable to rap
Make Production instead the invisible god: only the other gods can claim to have met him, and only a few mortals have been allowed to enter his Studio, but he makes his presence known through the infallible beats he gifts to those in his favor
>>
>>59299582
>I think we’ve well passed the point where being a skinny white guy is no longer synonymous with not living in the hood
That doesn't mean it isn't an appropriate character archetype. That's kind of the point, you don't have to be a thug in 90's LA drinking a forty in a brown paper bag to be hip hop, you just gotta be with it.

In the fantasy + hip hop setting, about the same. But in the urban fantasy setting people have been going after in this thread, I think you'd be best going for a four-class system based on the original four pillars of hip hop, as >>59230716 points out.

The Wizard equivalent is the MC. These are your rappers, front men who are the centerpiece of any group thanks to the fact that they spit hot fire.

The Fighter/Monk equivalent is the Bboy/Bgirl. These are your breakdancers and also the physical fighters, delivering beat downs with flashy martial arts moves.

The Bard equivalent is the DJ. These are your hip hop producers, creative types who turn out killer beats, making them the essential support backbone to any crew.

The Rogue equivalent is the Writer. These are graffiti artists, focused on stealth and agility in their quest to tag impossible spots but ready to kick the ass of anyone that messes with their art.

To go with our four-class system, there should be a small amount of stats but lots of customization. Lots of different types of raps, beats, tags and dance moves. Just a quick look shows four subclasses of monkdancer:
>toprocker: upper body and hands, including tutting
>downrocker: lower-body and moves done purposely making contact with floor
>power mover/power head: big flashy acrobatics and gymnastics
>freezer: do a move and stop in the middle of a strange position to stop your enemy and open them up to a big hit

You might also combine the four class themes to be something else rather than just having a little from each. For example, an MC + B-boy is instead a Hype Man- around for muscle and image, but also capable of adding some vocals at just the right moment in a supporting fashion. Basically a Paladin equivalent.

Absolutely. Combine a Writer with any class and you’ve got the rapper who draws his own album art, the bboy who comes up with flashy costumes to style on you in, or the DJ who can basically prepare musical runes

MC + DJ = beatboxing wizard

Given that I'm assuming the Writer is pretty heavy on Dexterity (or the equivalent), I think mixing them with a DJ should make for somebody who plays a "real" instrument. Be it an old school James Brown type, somebody making live hip hop like The Roots, or a musician from a different genre like a funk bassist or a jazz pianist trying to fit in.

I mean, there's always the fourth option..
If the characters did their own songs, it would be 100% the best rap setting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dVKMla1LAY

Should breakdancing even get a major focus in such a setting, or would martial arts take its place?

Shit, can we have more of this kind of thing? I like this better than most of the garbage on /tg/ now.

The answer should be both. Always both.

>>59334930
People are competitive by nature. Both can coexist, and borrow from each other, and even spawn a combination of the two. Hello capoiera.

>>59335331
Are you the hip-hop purist from the beginning of the thread?
>>
>>59340622
Not him, but there's more than one or two black people on /tg/, anon.

The breakdancing is martial arts, and the martial arts is break dancing.
