ITT, we come up with as many ways for ancient precursors to be negligent fucks as possible.

I'll start.

They've left behind dozens of types of FTL, ranging from a warp gate system to space bourne wormhole stations to jump-through-hell style FTL to federation warp speed to just killing the space ship and making a new one at the destination.

The precursors have never intended for anyone to find this moon. It was part of a secret security protocol in case of omnicidal war or total extinction. Its part war cache, part fortress, part shipyard, part genetic engineering lab, part WMD storage. Automatic curators kept it pristine for ages, its automatic fleets, robot armies, xenomorph armies, biological, nuclear, chemical, phsiycal and memetic WMDs prepared for deployment, auto-labs and xenoformers ready to bring the precursors back.

No one knows why it was never activated or if it was compromised somehow.

A derelict Progenitor warship is intentionally left to orbit a primitive planet. Its reactors,.drives, and weapon systems are all based on FUCKING MAGIC tiers of spacetime manipulation. A wrong button press could send you to an alternative universe or summon a black hole. Good thing you dont have to push buttons because the entire thing is telepathy operated and a helpful AI has been left behind to instantly connect to the mind to everyone who enters and overwhelm it with information. It may even try to transfer your consciousness into a better body if it wishes so.
>>
>>58889492
When they encountered an extremly powerful species of parasites on a distant planet they decided that the best way to handle it was by creating an artificial predator to inhabit that environment which is in it’s own right a galactic menace without leaving behind any actual explanation or warnings for why killing off the living superweapons they created on that planet is a very bad idea.

>space bourne wormhole
>>
>A small complex full of man-sized pods. Entering one automatically activates a sort of full-immersion entertainment suite, absolutely frying the brains of any dumb primitive to enter one.
Used by the races of today as a useful torture complex.
>A large alien nature preserve built on an island floating above a lake. Propelled by unknown means, the island houses some overgrown ruins of what once was a hunting lodge and five star resort. Without its alien owners to maintain it, all of the game has escaped and made the island their own.
>The progenitors sometimes would use tube grown varieties of lesser sapients in their military. They were jept under strict regimes and constantly fed orders and training in their own sort of psuedo society when they weren't fighting by an AI. As the soldiers mysteriously died out, and the tubes irreparable, the AI adapted to a new race of sapients making their home nearby. The place becomes a martial temple where the greatest of warriors go to hone their skill, and maybe go mad in the process.
>>
A few ancients were doing the "lifeforms as art thing," with all sorts of bioengineered results. Some were merely cool to look at, and some were nearly Flood-level dangerous. Competition to make the next neat thing drove them to all sorts of extremes, and their art galleries/zoos are still out there.

Furthermore, a different precursor, a roboticist, had a grudge against them, possibly some sort of machines versus meat thing. That one made a whole swarm of berserker probes to smash up the bio-art, but it was never activated. Maybe the precursor made it during a tantrum and thought better of it. Too bad the swarm wasn't dismantled, since it never got any targeting info beyond "living things." Like the bio-art monsters, it also waits for intrepid idiots to activate.

They fell victim to a massive civil war which left metric fuck-tons of batlle debris and other relics all over the part of the galaxy they lorded over. They're actually still around, though greatly diminished and trying like hell to clean up the mess, but lingering strife, looters and politics are slowing things way down.

In an attempt to avoid going extinct from a self-inflicted bioweapon that targets their specific DNA, they created a sub-species to act as both their children and their rebirth. They coded into the DNA of these creatures their genetics memories, specifically personalities of those of greatness, as to spur them back to their once former glory after they had eradicated both themselves and the virus. Problem is, while singular tests were replicated with nearly 100% efficacy, it was never tested on a grand scale. So now this sub-species is existing, having evolved and developed into a budding race, and every now and then one of them will awaken try to rally their “brothers and sisters.” These cries almost always fall on deaf ears, with at best mocking for being deranged and at worst executed for their strange behaviour

Take your pick from the Warframe lore:
Create a race of mind control slaves and a scepter that controls them and hope no one but you wields it in the future
Creating programmable meat-metal and hope it never goes full zombie
When it does, just strand the derelict ships outside the solar system and hope for the best
Experiment with dangerous FTL tech, possibly already knowing there was a godlike being in the void
Use the children mutated by the FTL experiment as superweapons
Engineer intelligent and self-reproducing terraforming drones that can adapt to anything and hope they don't mind slavery

Prior to sublimating the precursors had vast arsenals ranging from "minor" system destroying bombs to devices that would instate a lower energy shift if activated. They never actually intended to use any but having them lying around ensured everyone stayed neighborly much like our civilizations nuclear weapons ensure begrudging peace.
Since they were leaving behind this used up shithole of a universe as they ascended to a higher reality anyway they honestly didn't care about leaving all those aging possibly unstable firecrackers behind floating around space for anybody to stumble upon.
Mounting evidence suggests this is why the universe is expanding away from itself and why the various galaxies will someday expand away from each other at technically above relativistic speeds due to a minor fender bender between a dark matter bomb, a derelict phase state warhead, and an inhabited super-earth.

They left one of their hyperspace lanes one when they left.

Anyone who passes into the active hyperspace corridor is automatically sent to the end of the line. They find themselves, in an instant, transported to a specific exit point three galaxies away, surrounded by debris and ships and rocks that have likewise been picked up by the hyperspace lane over the years and dropped off there. This is only supposed by be a juncture in a much larger and more comprehensive network of lanes, but we can't figure out how to turn any of the others on so once you get dumped there you are stuck. And it would take billions of years for any form of communication to make it back home and tell them where you now are.

From the perspective of anyone not on the ship, by the way, there just appears to be a giant invisible wall in space that if you touch it you disappear. Anything that crosses the invisible line is just GONE, and never comes back.

If we count high fantasy super advanced magic society bullshit, the Ancients advanced magic theory to the point they invented numerous spells, rituals and artifacts that served no purpose other than to theoretically see how far they could push magic. Essentially ever more dangerous magic WMDs and Dr Mengele type shit. Now, they never used any of it as it would be horrible and it was all mostly theoretical.

But when the civilization fell, the research was left behind, and now you have the rituals to make any spell cover 100 times the area of effect and the Sword of Cutting through the Fabric of Space-Time to Slay Your Ancestors and Retroactively Make You Never Exist are just laying around.
>>
>>58889492

The precursors saw their end coming, and decided to pave the way for the return of true galactic civilization by making sure their genes survived.

Essentially, they sent out a bunch of probes designed to seek out habitable planets with life and co-opt that life to product precursor/native hybrids, and then upload precursor personality templates into the resulting offspring to jumpstart civilization. It will make whatever changes necessary to produce as many such offspring as possible utilizing local resources.

As designed, its clearly intended to be used on compatible lower lifeforms. But the probes don't discriminate and will affect intelligent species as well.

So basically an alien probe drops down onto your world and selects the best adapted, most evolved organism to use as a basis for intelligent life. For miles around where it lands, any male gets rewritten to be female, and then every female gets rewritten to be pregnant with half-alien spawn. And then after the babies are born, personality seeds get uploaded into the heads of all of the children so they will naturally team up with each other to form an expansionist space empire, and many of them 'remember' how to build advanced pieces of technology to get themselves started. The rest all know useful things too, but specialized at different tech levels so that regardless of the available tools at hand some portion of their population already knows how to best use that to jumpstart to the next tech level up.

And then the space probe leaves to go do this again to some other world, providing maximum chances for success.

God, I hate that trope. Its just such a hand wave to the question of "What happened to them?" without any substance. Plus it implies that higher dimensions are a real thing, which is fucking stupid, and can easily ruin any sci-fi setting. If this higher dimension is real, why wouldn't everyone and their mom be teching up to it?

Feeling above waging wars themselves, the Precursors created a servitor race to fight wars for them. In order to be humane about this, they limited their mental faculties in order to make them less like a sapient species sent to die.

Naturally, this turned out to be a horrible idea that resulted in a species of highly aggressive psychopaths who were genetically engineered to not be able to process higher thinking, or indeed even the concept of mortality, who all were armed with ridiculously advanced military technology.
>>
>>58893535

Its effectively rape, but on a massive scale. Precursors: no sense of right and wrong!

Thinking about it more, it would actually be worse if they were designed to specifically target intelligent species for co-opting, essentially taking over competition while seeding precursor 2.0. In that case, you'd want the hybrids to be adapted specifically to propagate successfully within an established civilization. Like the Asari from Mass Effect, something that appears attractive and desirable to the host species and can 'breed' with them but really only ever makes more Asari.

The Asari actually are a great template to use, come to think of it, because they are all female. Allows for massive population explosion, which will be important in the first few generations.

I really didn't like how Sublimation was handled in Bank's setting. Once a civ decides to Sublime they just get a big old giant red indicator at their capital that appears out of nowhere and it just sort of happens at a scheduled date. I'd have appreciated it more if it the civ had to do something to make it happen.
>>
>>58894369
But even than its still stupid, and just "oh, they're so SMART and ADVANCED that they all packed up their bags and left into magic Sci-fi heaven." Instead of actually tackling the question of what there is to do after you reach a pinnacle of advancement, they just brush the whole thing off the setting. Nevermind there might be parts of the civilization left behind that either chose not to 'sublime' or did 'sublime', but instead chose to fuck around in our dimension. Or hell, the fact that the entire civilization just pops into space at once. Or the fact that you might as well pull a poochie, and say they died on the way. Or the worst of all, that every other 'Sublimed' civilization is just A-Okay with letting any old fucker pop in.

You wanna know a really good use of it though? The Orz.

>The remaining Humans flee the earth, now turned into a giant egg after the dragons collectively killed themselves to transform into one super God Dragon that chases them across the universe
>Humanity finds a new world and in an attempt to rebuild try to rebirth humans although these humans are smaller then they are and arn't nearly as capable at magic
>One of the precurser humans, in an act of desperation, figures out how to harness some of the god dragon's power against it and after an intense struggle wins (sorta) and dump the body on the moon
>The now "dead" dragon god attempts to possess the human who used it's power turning her into a power mad queen who dominates the new world

Anon. That IS how it worked. Post-scarcity cultures in that setting divided all the time so plenty stayed back to kick around while the rest moved on and those that sublimed didn't just waltz back in. Beyond that the point is they moved on to a new reality, probably with new laws of nature and physics, to start the grand adventure all over again from scratch. As for other races being A-okay with it we don't even know if they sublime to the same reality or if they went to different ones or different universes on the same "level".

You're right to a a degree. Most of that was basically 8 year old me piling on cool shit but I think that's how most things usually pan out until you bullshit reasons for them to work.

They had to leave their old planet because it was literally destroyed, especially when the energy of your planet is siphoned off to be used for the birth of a dragon god

The few True Humans couldn't possibly fuck a few million people into existence and the level of magic and technology they were using and practically infused with changed them to such a degree that even mass cloning humans with their genetic material didn't make them like them. Imagine the size difference between the Dark Souls Gods and humans. That's about the idea I was going for.

The Queen didn't turn and backstab everyone immediately. The True Humans basically took position as Gods over the demi humans because that's essentially what they were at that point. Nothing about this whole venture made them to be righteous or just or anything and it took time for the dragon's essence to corrupt and change her to such a degree that all the bullshit went down forcing the events that make the present world what it is.

Anyways, sometimes good ideas just come from saying fuck it and letting the kid in you drive for a few minutes.

Kinda neat.

Rather than the Precursor's leaving useful shit and mysterious artifacts behind, they left a shit-ton of Von Neumann AIs who are just constantly recycling shit into arbitrarily high-tech office supplies. One AI converts everything into hyper-paperclips that it leaves floating in space, which another AI then finds and converts into quantum-paperweights, which are then converted into super electromagnetic bagels or whatever.

All the sapient races discovered long ago that you can't shut these AIs down or persuade them to stop, so you just have to stay out of the way unless you want to get turned into a deck chair.

I like the trope of precursors leaving breadcrumbs for the new races to find. I.e. 2001. More examples/interpretations welcome.

>What form do the breadcrumbs take?
Stellar bodies of increasing distance/challenge from the source world. Moon, inner planet, outer planet, nearest habitable planet, exoplanet, cross-galactic, exogalactic, etc. Each moon/planet is engineered by the precursors to help support/reward its discoverers, while also being a waypoint to the next one.

>What happens to the race when it finds all the breadcrumbs?
The final artifact is in a black hole. The precursors have been waiting there for a race to find them. Inside the event horizon, time is dilated such that to the precursors, any race entering the hole in the future happens near instantly. Their bet is that any race able to do so would have invented the necessary technology to escape the event horizon, and the precursors will join them.

There’s the Old Ones the way Nobledark Imperium handled them. Similar in many ways to canon but in other ways a lot worse. A bunch of hyperintelligent lizard wizards who (technically amphibians), won the evolutionary lottery and became physical gods that used the rest of the Milky Way as their own personal research laboratory, but who had the emotional intelligence of a wet paper bag.

Their fuck-ups are, to wit:
- Allowed a race of alien thugs with spaceships and black powder-level weapons to run rampant across the galaxy. When they do deign to notice them they use them to shake things up in their experiments or to clean up their messes.
- Create a number of god-like Warp constructs that act like supercomputers to them: Individually far more powerful than any Old One in order to accomplish things the Old Ones could never do on their own, but monomaniacal and only able to focus that power on a single task rather than the flexibility an Old One had.
- One of them decides to push the constructs around due to an inferiority complex. This will have consequences.
- Feel lonely about being the only technologically advanced beings in the galaxy. Discover a race of Stone Age beings living on a world being constantly blasted by the radioactive waste products of a C’tan feeding on a star. Think nasty conditions of the homeworld and short lifespan will be excellent catalysts for producing an advanced species, short lifespan means rapid turnover and radiation will provide good incentive for them to get off their homeworld. Works in a way. Necrontyr get off their homeworld. Old Ones can’t understand why Necrontyr have a grudge against them for all the aeons of suffering their ancestors went through that the Old Ones could have stopped.
>>
>>58928400
- Then when the Necrontyr ask the Old Ones about immortality, the Old Ones essentially shut them down by saying “you are not ready for immortality”. To be fair, the Necrontyr kind of weren’t. They had no long-term stability, they still thought short-term, they had no plans for what they were going to do about reproduction and resources if they became immortal. The Old Ones assumed the Necrontyr would see the logic in their words and act accordingly. They didn’t count on the Necrontyr being so emotional (not to mention increasingly seeing the Old Ones as playing god with species that couldn’t fight back), not to mention led by Szarekh “don’t tell me what to do” the Silent King.
- Old Ones hand the Necrontyr their shit in less than a year as a “don’t fuck with us statement”. Leave them in time out on their homeworld and nearby stars. Big mistake. Leads them to discover the C’tan and…you know how that goes.
- In response to fighting an enemy that severely outnumbers them and to whom they can actually die, the Old Ones panic and start uplifting a bunch of Stone and Bronze Age races (eldar, hrud) as cannon fodder, giving them extensive genetic engineering, space flight, advanced weaponry, and the ability to create their own Warp constructs without any instruction on how to use it. This ends up giving many of these species severe problems down the line.
- Some of said servant races claim the Old Ones said after they died the galaxy would be theirs. It’s unclear where this came from. The Old Ones certainly could not envision a future where they survived but their servitors did not. This could be bullshit on the part of the servant races, but it could also mean the Old Ones were bastards who told them this as a motivational lie. Or what they meant was “we will all rule the galaxy together, under our benevolent but iron-fisted guidance”.
>>
>>58928415
It’s possible the Old Ones noticed many of the problems that cropped up but filed them under things to fix later. It’s not even clear if the Old Ones gave a shit about individuals of the servant races.
- Uplifting Stone and Bronze Age races and turning them into Captain Americas of their species doesn’t work. So they decide to go bigger. They take a small, innocent, harmless goblin-like fungoid from a nowhere world and splice them so heavily it becomes “show me on the doll where the Old Ones touched you”, turning them into the Krork. The Krork, as their first act, kill and eat the remaining members of their parent species. The Old Ones see nothing wrong with this.
- Then, taking bits and pieces of the metaphorical DNA of their servitor races’ god-constructs, including Khaine and Gork and Mork, they decide to make a new Warp construct, this one solely focused and devoted to managing and coordinating the War in Heaven. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Khorne. Who the Old Ones created. Intentionally.
- Khorne is tasked with wrangling Gork and Mork and getting them back in line. He fails. Faced with the fact that YOU HAD ONE JOB and failed, Khorne snaps and goes rampant, becoming increasingly focused on bringing order to the galaxy by breaking heads and increasingly brutal means until he becomes all blood and skulls.
>>
>>58928431
- The other Old One-created constructs increasingly go mad and snap as well. Tzeentch, Nurgle, and Malal were in a Wyld, Weaver, and Wyrm-esque trio. Tzeentch, who was created to be an endless font of creativity, saw the opportunity for more change and took it. Nurgle, who was created to be the jolly caretaker who would ensure things got preserved and that the best things are kept to some degree and not mutated or destroyed, snaps from the workload and becomes a nihilistic hoarder. Malal, who was created to destroy things that no longer worked, REEEEE-ed at this state of affairs (especially since the other three gods had become symbols of a broken order) and became self-destructive and also nihilistic. Unfortunately the other three decided to gang up on him in a dark alley in the Warp and try to kill him, leaving him a fraction of himself. Ironically, unlike the constructs of their servitor races, Old One constructs had little to define them other than their task, making it easy for them to become cancerous.
- The revolt of their high-end constructs effectively seals the doom for the Old Ones, and turns the immaterial mirror to the physical realm into a hellhole.

Which, along with the Necrons, produces about 90% of the problems in the setting. The whole War in Heaven was even described as an "original sin" when it came up.

Now that they are gone the galaxy is still sprinkled with creations of theirs, some attempting to find a place to survive among local better evolved faun using the purpose they were made for, others destroying the environment, and a few living in a closed ecology aboard massive living space ships that eat space gas nebula.

Ascension has always been a perfectly valid way of making a civilisation so advanced that it removes itself from our dimension. This place is the physical, they become the immaterial. It's basically just an advanced form of growing up; you really shouldn't be giving a shit about what happens in a playground, and hanging around one will get you in trouble.

"It turns out you can turn a singularity into a kind of computronium with zero transmission times. Once a race gets technologically advanced enough to control the contents of a black hole, they beam themselves in. The energy costs of sending anything outside though are higher than what their entire civilization can produce from inside.
>>
>>58937110
Most of a time, when a race figures out how to do this safely, they get the bright idea to format and upload themselves into the largest black hole in their galaxy they can find. The one at the center. Unfortunately, the first race in a galaxy to digitally colonize a black hole will usually take control of these uploads, either putting the newcomers in virtual machine reservations or just deleting them.

The Precursors were hedonistic and entertainment enthusiasts, and specifically created and reacreated whole sections of the galaxy to fit their individual ideas of creating something new and interesting stories or films or games. Many races were simply created purely for battle, not to counter any threat but just to be used for war gaming purposes. Some are magical realms in both the literal and figurative sense, to entertain a higher level of fap not known by mortals anymore. Some were the settings of stories and sagas, but MANY MANY more are incomplete and never finished as they lost interest, had short attention spans, or even worse are so specifically detailed but yet left incomplete as it was a project beyond their grasp and never satisfied.

Y'know, desu, everything said in this thread reminds me of my own setting. Except replace "precursors" with "posthumanity" (although precursors did this shit too). I think I'm on the right track...
>>
>>58945295
In brane cosmology and M-theory, the bulk is a hypothetical higher-dimensional space within which the eleven dimensions of our universe (the three dimensions we can see, plus time, plus the seven extra dimensions that we can't see but M-theory theorizes are all around us) may exist.

Essentially, dimensions may be nested kind of like Russian Dolls Dimensions with more directions holding ones with less. This Higher Dimensional Space is called the Bulk.
>>
>>58945357
Do these higher dimensions perceive ours at all? Is there a 2D and 1D universe hidden away from our eyes according to this model?
>>
>>58945544
Different anon. They have a 3rd dimension they can see but it probably isn't ours just like a 2d universe could exist but we can't see it because those 2 dimensions aren't 2 of our dimensions.
>>
>>58945544
>Do these higher dimensions perceive ours at all? Is there a 2D and 1D universe hidden away from our eyes according to this model?

Maybe, there's no way to know, yet. Think of it like this though, there ARE 2D objects in our universe, our own visual fields. We, 3D beings, see in 2D. SO, logically, a 4D being would see in 3D, so possibly, maybe our whole 3D universe/multiverse/plane is just the 3D "visual field" of a 4D being? ANd if so, what if our own 2D visual fields are 2D universes, with 2D beings (flatlanders) living in the biopixels of your mind, and conscious perception (conciousness) is the medium in which lower dimensions are nested within Higher Ones!
>>
>>58945941
lets ask the important question here
can we fuck with those higher dimensions for FTL and/or energy?
>>

>>
>>58946164
>already have theories that could let us reach these universes

Yes. We have miles of papers of ways to fuck or be fucked by these things and how we could possibly use them to fuck with or be fucked by our own shit but until we hit K2ish civilization status we probably won't be able to try them out.

We want dyson spheres but idiots exist who think it's an actual solid sphere and will blot out the sun. These are probably the same idiots that think only one type of reactor exists and they're all Chernobyl in waiting. Feasibly once we get the method down we could do it more or less with what we have today by getting automated mining equipment on mercury or maybe nearby asteroids that can also make more of themselves. Once we get that started it'll buy us the time to figure out how to make automated launch systems for the satellites those miners will also produce eventually. The returns will be shit compared to what it could be until we find a better way to transmit the energy but it'll still be many times more than what we have now.
>>
>>58948939
Those idiots can see the sun up close for themselves for all I care, an orbital solar farm could be built with technology we have now and a Dyson-Harrop satellite array is within 25 years of us at the current rate of materials development.

Turns out that once you reach a certain point in evolution morals and ethics fall out of fashion, so the universe is a veritable minefield of containers filled with superdeathplagueaids and superweapons that casually delete entire star systems just laying about.
>>
The precursors explore the entire galaxy, maybe the entire universe, the number in trillions and their technology is absurdly powerful and vast.

Yet they stagnate, they reach a maximum, they can't find a way to stave off entropy nor can they find a way to stop the passing of time. As a species they have an existential crisis and just sorta stop making more of themselves. They die off and just leave all their powerful weapons, technology, everything, littered across space because who gives a fuck if the universe is going to end anyway?

This was a perfectly good idea. The X are an abject threat to all life in the universe. While they are not inherently sapient, they can quickly aquire it, and kill seemingly all forms of complex life other than metroids by infection alone, and are shown to do this whenever they possibly can.
Metroids, by comparison, have a significant physical weakness (cold), and appear to be no smarter than, perhaps, a dog. They cannot travel between planets without being shipped, and they cannot sexually mature or reproduce in any environment except for their home planet or a facsimile. Their larvel forms can divide through exposure to beta radiation, but there is no indication that they behave in such a way to intentionally seek this out. But even when allowed to mature, they don't seem to be inclined to kill all other animals, even though they easily could.
