They go forth with one great motto: To boldly rattle where no skeleton has rattled before, to seek out death and skeletonisation.

But as they explore the cosmo in search of death, they instead find living planet after living planet, and move on in search of alien death.

Well, yes, it does

Do you think bones lose their hardness/integrity due to exposure? How would thatmatter to a sceleton anyway, seeing as they aren't held together by anything anyway?..

If all magic was powered by life or some shit, then anti-life beings like skellingtons would be unable to use magic without destroying themselves.
>>
>>57121900
This is likely what would lead to it. You have to have some living material to cast magic. Vampires cast magic by stealing blood.

Skeletons typically don’t have living things on them, so once they are animated they are stuck like that.

There are some skeletons that cover themselves in moss and whatnot. They can cast magic like vampires but aren’t as civilized as the others.

magic and science can have different strengths and weaknesses dude, its not all just one is strictly better forever. a magic nuke would take alot of time to accumulate power or a level 20 something wizard who focused their entire life studying to blow shit up big and be exhausted for a day, but a nuke is easier to make en masse if you know how. but wizards can do other things better and faster, but might not have the precision of gene splicing. it could help set a science vs magic mentality of one side trying to outdo the other, like the cold war.

im sorry your brain cant comprehend being different outside of your recycled trope filled trashheap and come up with some semi- original ideas like the other anons did.

Doesn't space radiation cause bone loss? And with skeletons being DEAD they wouldn't regenerate it and become permanently weaker.
>>
>>57137390
I think you may be confusing it with the effect that being in microgravity causes loss of muscle mass.

I'm not sure if radiation can induce things like Osteoporosis in skeletons, since by definition those diseases only happen in living organisms.

Of course, stay in space long enough and you may photodisintegrate, but that will take a LONG time.
>>
>>57137418
Yeah I just checked and the bones loss is apparently due to radiation damaging bone formation which naturally would be lacking in skeletons. But the question remains how do skellies maintain their bones or does the magic just kill all microbes?

Science is all about cheating, all the time.

If it happens, and it's consistent, and it's effects can be felt in any way whatsoever, science is on it like a pack of ravid coyotes, using it to build more science, better science, science that enhance our ability to feel the effect of things, and to predict them.

Being a munchkin is science, because science is being a munchkin on the truths of the universe. And if magic is consistent, then the study of magic is science too.

Also, can the skelletons be powered by anti-magic? Not a magical nullifying field, not dark magic, anti-magic. Which is like magic, except it is indiferent to magic and animates skelletons for some reason.
>>
>>57139183
interesting. but consider this:

purifying clerics charging high prices for true eternal rest. no life magic, no skelly boning, no tug of war. dust to dust ashes to ashes.
>>
>>57140188
To expand a bit in anti-magic
>what is anti-magic?
It's like magic, but it animates skeletons.
>but, why magic?
Because skeletons don't move on their own, so it must be magic right?
>but why anti?
Because no know spell has ever interacted, detected, or affected this anti-magic thing, ever. And dark magic already meant something.
>but, what does this anti-magic even do?
Skeletons are moving on their own. It is pressumed that this is because of anti-magic, and no other explanation has been proven.
>>
>>57140188
science messes with rules that already exists, but magic bypasses those laws while science just exploits. of course, imo and not the final ideal.

i like the idea of nega magic, no potential for weird magic bullshit but can do other science. literally just the opposet of regular magic; less sporastic and more readily understandable. like a law/chaos thing.
>>
>>57140326
I've always preferred the idea that magic is not a thing, but several. You think you have figured out magic, its laws and sources, but then you discover a new phenomenon and there go your beautiful theories.

A magical theory of everything is boring, exploitable, and since people always complete it before or during implementation it makes magic predictable and yet difficult to work within a setting without breaking it.
>>
>>
>>57140416
yeah plain magic that's always the same makes things boring and predictable.

maybe blur the line between magic and science. souls are a magical mysterious thing, but also energy techically. if you take a soul and j-jam it in something, it might stick in it due to factors. or burn it in a soul furnace, its just gonna wander till its snuffed out so why waste it? maybe bones keep most of the soul around, but most of a skeleton becomes a new skele-person? i feel like im getting in necron territory, but i guess that is one extreme.
>>
>>57118226

I have questions anon:

>if skeletens lack ability to use magic what sustains thier unlife
>how skeletens feel their surroundings
>if skeletens think, and can "see" their surroundings do they also smell, hear and feel the touch? Do they feel pain?
>and most importantly are they still spooky?
>>
When skeletons are raised they only have a set amount of magic holding them together. This magic not only animates them but also allows them to retaine the mental faculties they had in life. They can cast magic but it uses up this magical reserve and mental abilities are the first to go. Many freahly raised skeletons panic and cast spells in thier panic reducing thier mental capabilities, redering them mindless, some even destroy themselves. Those who do not panic realise that they cannot cast spells without using the energy holding them together. They then go on to invent things to make up for thier "lack" of magic
>>
>>57142795
Magic sustains their unlife. They just can’t produce mana themselves. They still have their stores from before their “death” but once it’s empty it’s empty.

As such most skeletons simply use their powers to “birth” more skeletons.

They use every sense (but taste, because they don’t/can’t eat) but all except sight and hearing are numbed by a considerable amount.
>>
>>57143019
id imagine keeping all senses active would not be worth keeping on. touch at bare minimum; pressure for precision movements and pain for not dying again due to it being a vital survival/keeping some humanity intact. the cold of their bones would only remind them of oblivion, but would a soft, warm, gentle touch be worth a few minutes?

This is the cover for an excellent album by a band called Fightstar, which you should listen to if you have not.

Now, on to other things.
There's an episode of Doctor Who where nanobots bring people killed in war back to life, but imperfectly, due to a malfunction (The Empty Child.) Why couldn't the skeles work like that? Malfunctioning nanobots in the air strip the flesh from dead humans and reanimate them as skeles. Other races don't understand how this works, since magic is the only science that has been practiced on the planet - the nanobots are alien - only that when one of them dies, unless cremated within a few minutes the flesh melts away and the skele rises up and wanders off. It creates a natural animosity towards skeletons, and explains why they can't use magic - the nanobots wouldn't understand magic or why it would be preferred to science. The skeles, being animated by nanobots, life in a hive collective where they advance science with the dual goals of protecting the collective and spreading the nanobots throughout the universe.

Servants of the Nuclear Fire
Skeletons reanimated by the fires of occult magic & are blessed by the Nuclear God Azathoth with unearth state of perminancy neither dying or living yet filled with the motive force. Other races have yet to see beyond the fractals, they still use their parlor tricks & pray to microbial gods for gifts. The skeletons first reborn in the Nuclear Fires instead turn to science to share their God's gift of unlife & bath the world in the Light of Truth (radiation) which nurtures them. They seek to spread to the stars & seek out their dreaming God. Any skeleton can be reanimated in Nuclear Fire.

>Brothers! While the fleshies are pitiful for shackling us to their skin and bones before allowing us true life, the skeletonless are the true abhorrent ones in this galaxy
>For the fleshed ones can birth a skeleton, they have their place in this unlife. Theirs is a fleeting yet important step in the life of skeletonkind
>But the fleshless? They begin and end with no skeleton, no hardness to ground their flesh. As such they are decadent and horrific beings. Not only are they no use to skeletonkind, they are an affront to nature!
>They must be exterminated with extreme prejudice. Their empty flesh be will be purged and spread as ashe across this universe as a lesson to all of life and unlife.

All skeletons enter the world with a clear and full understanding of it. There is no age among skelekin. The skeletons of diminutive nature are valued, as they can more easily take on certain tasks than their larger brethren can and because they are somewhat rare.

Skeleton Economy, go! What are they paid in, what industries do they have?
Skeleton Healthcare! How do they handle never dying? Can anything threaten their bones? What happens if parts of them are detached?
Skeleton Diplomacy! What relations od they have with other races - are they isolationist? Do they welcome tourists? Do they have deals and contracts where they get the future skeleton-person inside you?
>>

I was just thinking about it:
Skeletons can only rattle.
The skeletocracy has an appointed "fleshspeaker" with a literal silver tongue and fancy clothes, who relays all messages.
If a skelly loses a bone he can replace it with a bone from a dead-dead skeleton, also, just imagine a skeleton with spider legs.
You can agree to give your body to the skeletons after you die, with a hefty reward.
>>
>>57197830
maybe that's what moss is for? >>57123484
Skeletons start out with a finite amount of magic (or ani-magic), most of which is used to keep them undead and fully maintained. Damaged skeletons can drain magic (or anti-magic) from moss to heal themselves.

Thus, moss farmers.

This creature looks like it will make a fine member of society. I can't wait for it to find it's way to us. Still, I'm not sure what this fleshbeast has to do with the fact that we hold small skelekin in high regard...

The actions fleshies do with their faces are so odd, as well... Moving those blobs around must take up so much energy that it must be impossible for them to ever reach the level of technological superiority we have.
>>
>>57197830
>What are they paid in, what industries do they have?
Skeletons are something of a hive collective, so they don't actually get paid. Like Orks, they come into being knowing what it is to be a Skeleton, but as time goes on they more and more become their own skeleperson. But because each of them has this innate understanding, they have the one of the only true communist governments/economies in the universe. Because each individual skeleton has very few needs and can output much more than it requires each day - needing little sleep, it allows for this type of system to work. "Pay" for a skeleton is time off - which they usually use to go travelling, given a sum of money for whatever host society they are going to visit. This is almost always approved unless the skeleton uses it excessively, or regularly misses its quotas.

This is why adventurers, being the ignorant savages they are, often kill skeletons without even talking to them first, as they typically have modest sums of cash on them, and unless outfitted in battle rattle are very little threat.

Skeletons produce anything that is reasonable for them to produce, but excel in things too dangerous for most other species to want to produce en masse, such as plasglass where the high temperatures required make it nearly impossible for living beings to work on it (except for certain heat adapted races).

>>57199596

knucklebones are a currency somewhat, since they are small and hard to find. the stress put on the joints protect the much larger and important bones from being broken easily.

also a module for skelle-telle communication for fleshies, and their languages known at death is understood. cheaper than a silver tongue, but usually boxy, attached to already bulky armor, needs to be hand operated(extra hand can be bought) and might be buggy. since most skelly dont have them and are usually makeshift hand-me-downs. perhaps illegal in certain colonies, most likey the moon ones who are isolationists.
>>
>>57204557
>knucklebones are a currency
do you mind if I pay you in foreskins my fellow fleshbag?
>being this insensitive to the skeleton plight
>>
>>57207257
i should change that to knucklebones are the most valuable, like for organ transplant/donations heart is the most valuable because you need it to live.

i just wanted a "roll the 'bones" joke put somewhere, like a casino.
>>
>>57204557
Why would commie skeletons need a currency? There is no scarcity in skeleciety, and thus no need for currency. The only time a skeleton needs money is when they go visiting the fleshies.
