Elon Musk is very good at hyping things to death, but very bad with actual facts and science.

A plane has a one in 11 million crash chance. A rocket, even the best of the best we can build today, is closer to one in 100.

Putting aside the enormous cost and the numerous technical difficulties to make the venture profitable, a rocket is still orders or magnitude more dangerous than a plane, and Musk has a sketchy record of not actually exploding his rockets.

It's like the Hyperloop. He surfs on the hype and doesn't particularly care that it is scientifically impossible or so difficult it won't be done before a good century. People like him: he promises the future, but forgets that the future he is talking about is on the order of centuries. And people give him money and fame, and that's everything that count.

There is a "future timeline" on the the internet someway listed when most things are set.

I can't be bothered to find it but on the whole, most Space opera take seems place in the mid 22nd century. Yes even stuff written in 60s. You get the old stuff that was meant to take in 10 years time or 10,000 but "near 200 years mark" seems to be most popular for cities on the mood and the like.

It might be an age of sail thing. The 1700s was the age of discovery and exploration so the 2100s probably seems like an appropriate time for most writers.

I would agree with your view, if I didn't know so many people who should not have been parents because they lacked the proper sense required for the task of taking that feeling of being a parent and turn it into actual behavior, and who didn't grow to fill the role. How to prevent that for our future, I'd have to say is that they get to a state of emotional stability and soundness those people lack. Also when one knows he isn't financially prepared for a Child, abstaining from having one until he is does not prevent him from having one later or lesson the feeling of being a parent, in fact it helps him to digest the joys and burden better, his mind less worried.

What's more some future whole of society isn't more important than it's current parts. It's men today who are thinking these things up and determining how they will be treated and who will suffer for it: men would be wise to learn from their mistakes but the they would be wiser not to make them in the first place. In the metaphor of a parent from a different angle, we cannot wait until the child is born to prepare for it as best we can, we must do that now. Tomorrow will be too late.
