And here's the whole story in scenario form

I ran it for my DG open table over the weekend. The Agents spent their week of prep time canvassing the area for hints about Baba Yaga and how to fight her. They figured out her weakness to iron and her reliance on her sense of smell after talking with a village priest and a forest shaman. They even arranged a meeting with her through Koku, her intermediary. They seriously considered cutting a deal to make her leave the village alone, but were unwilling to pay her "relocation fee" of 37 kids. With their deadline drawing near, they recruited a couple willing villagers and took a drive to Smolensk to pick up some hardware.

Smeared with feces and herbs so she couldn't smell them coming, the team crept up on her chicken leg house. One Agent kneecapped it with an anti-tank rifle, while the other rushed forward to toss a bundle of grenades into the window, destroying her skull lanterns (which the anthropologist determined were the source of her power during their visit). She tried to fly away, but was quickly shot down, reduced to a couple HP and devoid of the power she needed for her spells.

The Agents debated what to do with her. One wanted to bring her back to SV-8 in chains, while the other wanted to send her to the Appalachians, so she would prey on imperialist Yankee children instead of Soviet kids. The priest they brought with them from the village had other ideas. He'd lost a daughter to the Queen of Witches, and wanted revenge. When persuasion failed to stay his hand, the ensuing gunfight wiped out the whole team except for one Agent. Traumatized and loaded down with fresh disorders from the fight, the sole survivor retrieved Baba Yaga's silver broom from the crippled house and "swept" the scene clean, disposing of all the bodies and evidence.

The Baba Yaga did 6 total damage to the Agents. They did the rest on their own.

Do Cthulhu - and other Elder things - emit some kind of supernatural aura that drive human mad? Or people go mad because the concept of such thing was unimaginable at like hundred years ago?

Cthulhu, at least, does emanate some sort of psychic influence that affects, at least, those sensitive to it.
I recommend you read "the Call of Cthulhu", it's basically required reading and it is short and free.

The "psychic aura that makes you go crazy" thing is bullshit pushed by people who haven't actually read any Lovecraft. Cthulhu can project his dreams into the minds of lesser beings but it's not like there is a "You will go bonkers past this point" field around every mythos monster.

Most cases of Lovecraft characters going insane happens after they saw the spooky shit, it's PTSD.

Favorite was the one posted to Detwiller's patreon, "Control Copy." Good old murder mystery that was the first DG op that my players really figured out on their own.
As much as I like the surreal nature of Night Floors I always felt like it was "spooky shit happens, blow up the building" without much payoff.

Night Floors is great for atmosphere but has little in the way of gameplay. Hoard is a better execution of the same concept, since it relies on the players actually figuring out and solving the mystery, rather than waiting for the GM to let them out

Does anyone avoid applying any of Lovecraft's gods to their games at all?

The last game I played, the supernatural power was represented by rain, but little else. Though what the rain did to 'expecting' mothers in the cult that prayed to it was very seriously cosmic.

My players seem to enjoy human antagonists more than beasties in general.
>>
>>55397810
I like including them, but they're always more of a background thing that rarely gets referred to by name.

It's way more interesting to take certain aspects of Lovecraft's gods and twist them to existing (or dead, but still real) religions. I'll take Shub Niggurath as a Celtic fertility goddess or a Southern Baptist snake church that ended up worshipping Yig at some point a few decades ago but still seems like a regular ol' weird branch of Christianity unless you really dig into it over Overtly Evil Cthulhu Cult #1059 any day.

The villain is the Blood Queen which is yet another entry into "apocalyptic magic women" which I'm sick of from Mummy, Suicide Squad, and Thor Ragnarok. Considering that Hellboy has fought very interesting mundane stuff or of cthulhu level entities, having a magic woman to punch seems really fucking lame.

Blood Queen is also one of the newest enemies Hellboy has fought in the comics and also have nothing to do with his origins beyond tangential ties.

Rated R also scares me. Hellboy has never been foul and while bloody, never particularly gory enough to warrant such. At most I'm hoping to see one topless scene and nothing beyond that.

Start with Seed of Darkness, the first book, and read them in the order they were published in. There are a few rough edges but Hellboy has always been under control of the same guy and the quality has been consistently good right from the start. I don't know much about compilation books since with a few exceptions I get most of my comics off /co/. I've also fallen off reading ever since The end of the Hellboy in Hell arc, around the time Liz got BTFO by the Black Flame in Hell on Earth.

Note, Hellboy leaves the BPRD after Conqueror Worm and goes off to do his own 'wandering the Earth' thing mostly unconnected to the overarching plot. Conqueror Worm is also the starting point for the BPRD series, where most of the big story happens. Then way late in the Hell on Earth saga, Abe Sapien leaves and gets his own spinoff series where he learns about his role in the apocalypse. And published during BPRD's run was the Lobster Johnson series, mostly unconnected but features some cool prequel stuff. The first Lobster Johnson story features an item that becomes the main focus of the Sledgehammer 44 stories, which becomes important to the conclusion of the Hell on Earth saga in BPRD.

Yeah, shit gets confusing after a while.

Im writing a campaign centering around Nyarlathotep. What would be some good materials for inspiration? I just finished reading his titular story and Dream-Quest.

Also would it be too edgy if I implied that Jesus was Nyarlathotep. One of my major npcs is a former priest that mixed Christianity with worship of Nyarlathotep and Azathoth as the Father and the Son.

What are some good mythos monsters related to cold, remote areas in North America? I'm making a Delta Green scenario based on the Dyatlov Pass Incident (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyatlov_Pass_incident), but to fit within the campaign I'm shifting it to the late 90s in Alaska rather than Russia.
>>
The Baba Yaga was always my favorite Hellboy character. Never figured out why.

Ithaqua is a GOO associated with cold areas. You could make Mi-go work or even go in an At the Mountains of Madness direction if it's in a mountainous area. If all else fails, search through folklore for the region and find a way to tie it in with the Mythos, or just let it be, not every DG scenario has to have a Mythos connection. Wendigo and skinwalkers are always a safe bet with cold related incidents.

I don't understand why you wouldn't just always pick the riskiest but most profitable option until you got what you wanted. If there's no cost to your hypothetical character dying then there's no reason not to start scum, other than time and the player's desire to roleplay

This is going to require some explanation, as the initial plot hook that popped into my head requires a bit of setup:

The Carpathian Basin used to be a sea for about 9 million years, its last traces having disappeared about six hundred thousand years ago. This means that most of the Carpathian basin consists of limestone if you dig down, and due to its abundance of natural waters, as well as the volcanic activity producing hot springs out the wazoo (Hungary's number of hot springs comes second in Europe right after Iceland), the Carpathian basin has a ludicrous amount of caves. It's like swiss cheese, really.

The idea is that somewhere in sleepy rural Hungary, sometime in the early 20th century - the exact time and place should be decided carefully, because pre-WW1 it's all just good ol' Austria-Hungary, while if I decide to set it somewhere in Transylvania or present day Slovakia post-WW1 suddenly things are way hairier and the party has to navigate an ethnic and political minefield on top of getting spooked - one such cave, one amongst many, is discovered. Perhaps a grazing sheep falls into a sinkhole, perhaps a great rain causes a small landslide revealing a gap, or perhaps the teacher or new priest writes a letter to an academic friend about an interesting cave he heard of from the locals.
People of various professions (the PCs) arrive to the sleepy village, the usual CoC assemblage: a journalist, some academics (geologist, folklorist, what have you), and together with the local intellectuals and a few curious farmers begin the expedition into the cave.
Only what they find is more than just stalagmites.

They crawl and dig and perhaps even blow some gaps open, going ever deeper in the name of science and curiosity. Finally, deep in the cavern, they find an ornately carved structure - an altar, or shrine of sorts, embedded in the limestone layers of the former seabed in a way leaves no room for doubt: it's old, older than the cave and older than the limestone itself.

This is where I'm troubled. Does the ancient altar bear the visage of some Great Old One? Does it contain within an artifact of power not meant for human use? Is it a way to communicate with a being beyond mortal minds? Is it just what it is, and the horror comes from the locals that begin to either fear or worship it, and subsequently begin turning on each other? The possibilities are way too tantalizing, and I can't lock it down to just one thing.

>>55437070
Pretty interesting. It would take a lot of work but if you just can't decide on what you want the threat to be you could always go the sandbox route of detailing the area and its history, creating some important NPCs, and writing out all the different possible threats you're thinking of so whoever is running the game has a bunch of options.

Here's my pitch for pinning something down though, if you're dealing with some kind of pre-human altar or artifact it probably was created by one of the servitor races, maybe one (or more) of them is still somewhere in the caves. Maybe it's trapped or sleeping and the all the noise from the research team woke it up or gave it an out. Maybe it's hungry, or maybe it just wants to leave. Maybe it's one of the creatures that isn't completely indifferent to humanity and it's gotten pretty bored over all those years in the caves.
>>
>>55437327
Sadly I'm not versed enough in the Mythos. Would the CoC rulebook have enough info on servitor races?

It's been a while since I've read through the CoC rulebook, but I'm pretty sure it does. And I got it wrong, anything under Greater or Lesser Independent Races on this chart would make more sense than Servitor Races, though you can make creatures from both columns work.

How do people handle pregnancy horror in their games?

I want to run an introductory session with some friends about horrible subterranean cockroach creatures laying eggs in already pregnant cultists. The roach grubs incubate in the willing mother using her human baby as sustenance for growth, before eating her from the inside out in typically disgusting fashion as they hatch.

Is this too 'edgy'? Rather than focusing on the horror of gore, I wanted to emphasise the single-minded terror of insane parents willingly killing their own children to further the aims of their new masters, but I don't want the adventure to be based around 'alien rape' to the point of absurdity.

Any ideas for this adventure?
>>
>>55440736
Just don't.
>>
>>55441033
Why not?
>>
>>55440736
If you're playing with your friends and know they won't react negatively to it, go for it, otherwise the gore angle might actually be a safer bet.
>>
>>55441493
I just don't think senseless violence in this capacity would be very effective for my group. We've all seen Alien, so the violent shock of that film won't hold the same appeal to them as much as the betrayal of lunatic parents.

For the record, I'm not really planning on 'impregnating' any of my players. The whole pregnancy angle would be the reveal that sets up the creatures themselves.
>>
>>55441543
Then yeah, you're probably fine. It's just that people generally aren't as turned off by over the top violence as they are weird alien impregnation and allusions to abortion. If your group's down for that kind of thing, go for it, that's definitely creepier than gore.

I was just saying if you were playing this for strangers or people whose taste for scares you aren't really familiar with you'd probably have less chance of seeming edgy if you went the more accessible gore angle.

Alright gents, I'm probably going to be running a session of Delta Green for my group. None of us have played before so I'm trying to find a one shot that will kinda cover every base- bit of investigating, bit of combat, some horror and then cover up. I'm debating on having them all be in DG already or just coincidentally run into whatever the hook is and follow it, since they can all RP not knowing what the fuck is going on a bit better.

Any suggestions? Likely party will be a proffessor of archaeology, two FBI agents, and a spec ops guy who recently got out and is now a cop.

Would today's people, who are much more familiar with concepts of monsters, aliens, horrors, etc than people of Lovecraft's time, have better chance of withstanding fearful Lovecraftian revelations and/or seeing Mythos monsters/deity?
>>
>>55445215

Today's people are triggered by words and require safe spaces, what do you think?
>>
>>55445215
No amount of X-Files you watch will shield you if the Color just happens to bring the party to your rooftop.
>>
>>55445215
I think it's less knowledge of everything ghastly and monstrous, and more a pervading secular Western culture.

One of the horrors associated with Lovecraft is that Christian theology isn't only untrue, it's as completely fabricated and meaningless as cartoons on television, which in turn are as void and vacuous as every other thought humanity has ever entertained.

People nowadays are more used to nihilism and a lack of meaning. Modern society is defined by materialism. Values have shifted noticeably. What scared many of the people reading Lovecraft's stories when they released wouldn't affect modern readers the same way.

That said, monsters are still monsters, so I'd expect a shoggoth to incite rabid fear the same as any other time.

I like it. I might have the thing in the tank escape before they get there and a murder happen in a nearby town where the victim was ripped apart and splattered all over their living room. Now it turns into a race to hunt it down and clean up this guy's mistake. Teach them two important lessons: 1. Don't fuck with unnatural powers, ever. 2. Always have the balls to clean up after yourself, even if it's your wife.
