These demon ridden biomechanical horrors and their thralls collect a great many different kinds of materials and transport them deep within the fog. No one knows what they're doing with so much steel, rubber, gold, circuitry and even the bodys of animals. But if the ravings of those thought lost to the mist are to be believed they are building something. Nine great spires of rock and steel, woven with tendrils, festooned with satellite dishes and adorned with flesh of men and beast. Some very rare individuals can repel the fog like a finger pushing on a block of gelatin.
However, if they push too far in, like the block of gelatin, the fog will spring back, envelop them and consume them.

While you could make a chain of them to explore the fog, they are very valuable and it would be extremely risky. They are much more useful in repelling the occasional fog incursions in safe zones so thay are kept there. Somethimes even by force.

Satellites still work and satellite launching is still possible if you have the sufficient ressources and space.

Thus isolated pockets of safe zones still have a way to communicate with each other but it is difficult. The fog extands into the stratosphere and direct line of sight is necessary to communicate with a satellite. This can be blocked by a chunk of the fog moving in between a satellite and the ground installation.

There's still places up high on tops of the mountains, that are relatively safe from the fog. The food supplies are limited, and even if most of those who search for refuge perish in the fogs, the demand is always greater than supply.

Whirling discs of metal, collections of coil and cable tightly bound together, whip through the sky. They propulse themselves with jets of fog that set their masses skittering.

"Repellants" are also used for fog harvesting. By forming small chains close to the edge of the fog, they can separate a blob of fog for storage.

Altenatively, Repellants move to the edge of the fog to push away part of it, allowing farmers to plant crops. They then leave the area to allow the fog to roll over the farmland again.

Even in safe zones where they keep Repellants in cages, Farmers make sure the former receive the best quality crop. Valuable cattle need to be nurtured after all.

When a repellent is lost to the fog, there is a chance that they will come back. Bloated beyond recognition and attached with all manner of piping, these masses of flesh and machine are known as "smokestacks" for the thicker, darker coloured fog that billows out of their piping. These unfortunates are released near the towns they were first captured, and will cause considerable harm as they fruitlessly try and get back into their once homes.

They cause such harm because where once their power pushed the fog away, now it draws it like a magnet, and they will often pull the fogbanks in great sheets behind them, swallowing up large areas of safe zones as they cross them.

examinations of their remains paint a picture of an inhuman amount of pain, with their internal organs twisted and remade to produce the dark fog they spout.

Killing them is the only mercy available. Do it quickly.

>What is known though, is that spending too long in the fog corrupts adventurers, gradually turning them into the most vile of Thralls. This corruption is akin to a disease, such as a flu, people with a hardy constitution who never get sick can spend longer in the fog than the weak and weedy. Eating or drinking provisions found in the fog seems to hasten the infection. Enough exposure will corrupt anyone. Wise adventurers give themselves plenty of time in between adventures. every safe zone has a star fragment at it's center. Star fragments brighten and dim at predictable times. They appear to be absorbing power from the moons gravitational pull and the earth's magnetosphere. Obviously dimming results in the fog getting closer while increased brightness repels it.
Most safe zones have a public transit systems set up to evacuate citizens from a dimming safe zone to a brighter one. Small safe zones rely on carpools and distributing petrol/gasoline to everyone with a vehicle. Bigger safe zones make use of train yards.
Airports are typically found in mid-sized safe zones. Aircraft pilots cannot rely on radio signals so they make use of flashing lights and beacons.

RECAP.

So we have a dense fog that blankets large sections of the Earth's surface. This fog is patrolled by "demons", bizarre intelligent-seeming biomechanical horrors.

Demons seem to be free willed and have servants known as "thralls" leashed to them. These thralls can be anything from twisted humans to animate bicycles.

A few forces can repel the fog. Star fragments fall from the sky and protect a large area, but are too fragile to move. "Repellants" are humans granted the same ability on a smaller scale. Repellants are rare, and although they can push back the fog they are still vulnerable to being claimed by it.

The fog is toxic in some way. Prolonged exposure will kill you, break you, destroy your memory or somehow make you less than human.

>The fog and the demons seem to have no particular preference for humans.
>Explorers can distract thralls with offerings of meat or metal. Explorers are known to leave behind equipment like gas masks or oxygen tanks as bait when the situation is truly dire.

That Recap sums up a good chunk of it. We also have mountain folknow who are mostly isolated from the rest, a second moon with *something* reaching down from above that can fuck your sanity up if you look at it, giant sky monsters, cloud fiends, buildings appearing at random, and a whole host of other shit.
>>
>>54928056
So far so good. I like this setting. It makes a good post apocalyptic world without going full mad max. And different safe zones allows for different cultures.

>We just created a micro Age of Strife, didn't we?
Maybe? With a bit more bio-horror it seems.
>>
>>54928485
bio-horror is a good addition. I like this.
>>
Meat is now an rare luxury or even a liability. Since farming land is now severely reduced, even with the fog helping plants grow, all crops are used to nourish humans. And even if raising cattle was possible, proximity to the fog may lead to corruption of the animal and meat.

Plants are safe to eat, even if touched by the fog.

On the other hand, since part of the sea is still clear, fishing is possible but dangerous due to the monsters hiding there.

>The fog was actually just factory smog after all, and the society is the lower caste, unknowing of the developed world deep underground
>>
>>54935922
>Or at least that's the theory of one madman.

>In some areas of the old world, deep in the fog, there exist machines which have many of the treasures of the old world inside them, seemingly on display for sale. The machines themselves have long since corrupted or been enthralled but the items inside are usually safe. Great efforts are made to capture these walking treasure troves, as even one of them can catapult a small squalid town into the forefront of capabaility and strength, with new weapons, power sources, manufacturing capability and computing power.
>>
>>54929278
Also, we aren't obsessed with bourgeois small town Christianity being an evil cult.
>>
>>54936132
There is some truth in the madman's story however.

There is a deep underground facility where the inhabitants make use of machines found in the fog. These macjines make more Fog which is pumped above ground.

However they came after the Fog covered the most of the land and their Fog production is only a drop in the ocean.

This setting kinda reminds me of a smaller scale Phyrexia.
It's got the same corruption and biomechanical theme, but lacking in structure and organization, which somehow makes it even scarier.
There's no leader to defeat, no army to mobilize against, just a wall of fog full of stuff that wants to kill you surrounding your little community.
>>
>>54945362
>There's no leader to defeat, no army to mobilize against
I'm sure there's *something* behind the Demons and Thralls, but it's likely of deep in the Fog that you would cease to be if you attempted to hunt it, and it's probably powerful enough it would be Azathoth in all but name. Best to leave it vague and open though.
>>
>>54945623
Yeah, there's the implication of something behind it all. But nothing that can be fought, let alone understood. Maybe it's the fog itself. Maybe it's the Gleaming Moon. Maybe it's in the towers, or in another realm entirely. Whatever it is, to it, we're just components waiting to be of use.

>This tea has been shown to delay the onset of negative effects of the fog, so long as each serving contains at least 5 cicada shells, and is drunk every 8 hours.
>Some farmers in safe zones have even managed to create cicada farms to cater to adventurers. Regular exposure to the fog has proven to shorten the nymph stage to a single year instead of 10, making farming them quite simple with the aid of a Repellent. The full grown cicada also provides a regular protein source, making them that much more valuable.

So what twchnology do the survivors on the fog have access to in this world? And how well do they understand it? Are they primitives fumbling with advanced weaponry they barely understand, mordern tech with occasional dips of 20 years into the future? Or are they somewhere else? What are some of the larger human settlements and what are their cultures? How is a city made around a freshly fallen star fragment? Do country borders still exist or have they been forgotten?
>>
>>54950861
think S.T.A.L.K.E.R /metro last light aesthetics. modern technology, but things that can't be made as well any more slowly phase out the lost world tech. The biggest settlements may even have actual factories, although securing raw materials is always difficult..

Since stars fragments both dim and brighten there is an area around each safe zone like the tide markings on a beach. Taking technology into these areas is strictly verboten, so the only ones who live there are those too poor to go anywhere else. These low-tech slums can be found in almost every safe zone. There are however puritanical factions that control certain safe zones. They consider the fog to be evil itself, and anyone who willingly goes into it is not to be trusted. They deal with explorers on sufferance and they eradicate any attempts to settle within the tide zone.

Has potential, but like all abominable horror stuff, it becomes boring if 3 crucial questions are not answered beyond the lolyerfucked and have no fighting chance:
Can the Fog be stopped?
How do humans take back their lands?
How to kill demons?

If these are not possible things, the setting sucks and is worth absolutely northing beyond nerds jerking themselves off.
>>

>Can the Fog be stopped?
There are things that can repel and keep it at bay, such as Repellents and Star Fragments.

>How do humans take back their lands?
Gathering star fragments or building around them to create Safe-Zones overtime is the most likely option.

Repellants could be utilized as one way to take back human lands. Linking hands to make a sort of human broom to sweep it away from settlements. But that said repellants start being treated as tools or cattle rather than people.

An anon suggest fire hurting the fog >>54949513, but it also angers the demons and thrall monsters that live within it... so using it to burn away the fog is super risky. So I'd imagine people would resort to flashlights or starfragment torches often than not.

We've definitely got a way of "killing thralls". they are always connected to demons by umbilical chords. Severing their connection to a demon slowly starves them...

Perhaps getting rid of the thralls slowly starves the demon in turn.

Could also have it like this:
>Demons can be destroyed/heavily damaged with enough explosives. Making it stick is the problem.
>Thralls still connected to the demon will harvest meat and metal to repair it
>The repair process itself is rapid-a Demon that has been leveled to the ground can repair itself fully in a week with a steady supply of material.
>Keeping a Demon down requires cutting off all the Thralls, then hitting the body with enough explosives to level a building.

I quite like dismemberment, its just meatier and more desperate than zapping something with a scifi electricity gun. but that said, it could be a technique that gets specialized in.

i adore this idea, such a simple thing but it can me used to create such atmosphere.

>Cicadas have spread far beyond their natural range and are found in all but the most inhospitable lands. their mating calls are heard nearly year round in some places. the constant drone of them drifts to the back of peoples minds, barely noticed anymore. but it's absence is noticed sharply, for they only stop calling for one reason, a demon stiring nearby. attempts have been made to use them like birds in a mine but the simple bugs won't call while being jostled about. once their cages settle and calm they begin to call again, prompting fog delvers to set them up as parameter sensors around their camps.

>The state of infrastructure in the fog appears to be in flux. Buildings and roads may appear pristine to one expedition, dilapidated and overgrown to a later expedition, and then back to looking newly built the very next day. Sometimes the buildings may appear in mirrored but in the same location, and sometimes they're not there at all. Facilities with electricity and clean running water have been documented, verified by extraction, but there is little certainty about the frequency of such occurrences. It is suspected there may be a pattern behind all this seeming randomness, but until it is discerned it presents an almost insurmountable challenge to those who attempt to map the fogged world.

>The Bloated Mother- A mountainous mass of rust, flesh, and metal that travels through the Fog, devouring all in its path, and leaving hordes of Thralls in its wake. It is difficult to keep track of its movements, for it does not stay in one specific area for long.

>Outposts are oftentimes set up near railroads and train stations. The issues with the inconstancy of fogged infrastructure is still a bother, so, typically camp will be made within visual range of the rails. Human presence gives some permanency to the constructions, experience tells us. The trains are not often used and would arrive and depart irregularly, inexplicably powered and operated by nobody. The solution we've decided on has been to establish a minimal but permanent presence in the trains deemed acceptably safe for human passengers.
>Each train has its own hazards. One might try to crush its passengers to paste, the train car's interior compressing like it was stuck in a trash compactor. Passengers on one train experience instant agnosia upon boarding and will progressively lose fine motor control that only gradually return after they've stepped off. And there's one train you can't really exit unless you leave a fresh body part behind. We keep a pretty thorough record of which trains we've got a permanent observer on. Identifications, tracks, timetables, and so on. The details seem to stick when there's somebody riding along.

>Patrolmen are odd entities often mistaken for corrupted humans. Humanoid in shape, they are sentient beings that are purely mechanical.
>Though they live in the mist and are extremely reclusive, they are passive to humans, and will even give dependable advice to those who ask.
>One explorer was welcomed among the patrolman, and documented how these mechanized men are "born".
>Scrap metal is assembled into the rough shape of a humanoid standing upright. Patrolmen surround these husks, and use powers reminiscent of human repellers to drive away the mist.
>They have to sustain this process for months while the infant patrolman forms.
>The other, more fascinating method of patrolman reproduction explains how they earned their name.
>They patrol the wastes, searching for demons.
>When a demon is encountered, Patrolmen emit a jamming signal that disorients the demon. They then cut loose as many human thralls as possible and take them to their camp.
>What follows is a meticulous and often futile ritual to "rescue" the enthralled humans. Over the course of twelve hours, remaining flesh is removed and replaced with specific mechanic parts. Near the end of the ritual, all organic material is discarded with only a metal husk remaining. According to the patrolman "Mystics" who oversee this ritual, the former human/thrall undergoes a test of will to decide if they'll be reborn, or if their souls will finally be at rest. Only 2% survive. If successful, a new patrolman will be born.
>"Reincarnated" patrolmen often only retain sparse memories of their human lives. Scientists have determined the low positive outcome makes patrolman conversion an inneffective way to "cure" enthralled humans.
>There was only one recorded instance of a converted patrolman retaining all his human memories. An explorer who was missing for years.

Having the voices and height of small children, these peoples seem to run about in the fog at play, totally heedless of danger, their faces completely obscured by flat simple porcelain coloured masks. Demons, thralls and other phenomena seem to ignore them completely, and when fogwalkers have allegedly asked them what they are doing they shrugged and said "playing" in a singsong voice. Some of the fogwalkers even claim to have traded with them, trading sinple trinkets and toys for far more valuable material including star fragment shards and advanced technology.
