Whether it's original, Reloaded, or the other spin-off, (Back off, I just woke up and never played that one, so the name is eluding me) feel free to discuss them here.

To start things off quite simply, I have two questions regarding OG Deadlands.

A: Anyone ever thought of making a cheat-sheet for the various monsters in DL that a Harrowed can 'Count Coup' from? 'Cause if not, I might do that. Just a blurb of Name and Power, because I'd be interested in that for a quick-reference.

B: As a guy who's played a mad scientist character twice, I'm having a bit of 'trouble' coming up with interesting or unique inventions for my current one; a chick working for the Men in Black (Dusters). So far, I've turned a Ballard '72 into 1800's M1 Garand (clip with 5 bullets instead of single shot) and I have an IDEA for putting pseudo-bayonet attachments onto all sorts of guns, a la the PS2 game Darkwatch. (Pistols have talon/hook shaped blades attached to the bottom of the grip, rifles have blade running underneath the stock so if something gets close enough that you have to cold-cock them with the rifle butt or grab the barrel and swing it like a baseball bat, they take a short-swords length of steel to the whatever.)

Question is: any better ideas for mad science, and is it worth it to have the extra sharp bits added onto existing guns in case of surprise melee?

I once had great success with a mad scientist - Billy Braxton, Boy Genius - who would continuously scrawl invention ideas on whatever surface happened to be handy. Basically what I did was I would look at whatever situation the party was in at any point, and come up with a dozen ridiculous, dangerous and impractical inventions that could get the party out of it. Stuck in a well? Coal-powered stilts, explosive-heel shoes, super-dense foaming soap. Dumb things that would only really be useful for solving the immediate problem. Never built like, 90% of them on account of it not being the time nor the place, but occasionally - usually when we were in a similar situation some time later -
with a bit of creativity I'd be able to pull out just the right tool for the job.

Of course I invented my way straight into the looney bin - character had to be retired after I ended up building a giant death ray in an attempt to blow up the moon for reasons that seemed perfectly reasonable at the time but were tragic in hindsight - but such are the perils of the improvisational sciences.

So to answer your question, best path of mad science I ever found was to find common situations that you will find yourself in, and then invent utilitarian devices to help get you out of them. Utility should never be underestimated.

>Anyone have advice for running a Deadlands game?

The books for it were pretty cheap off Amazon. Other than that, uh...It's a deadly as fuck system. Don't go too balls deep on the players. Also shotguns will ruin just about anyones day.
>>
>>54695290
No problems with making it challenging for the players then?

Hell on Earth? Lost Colony? D20?
>>
>>54695396

Pretty much, yeah. Everyone has 3 health levels basically, and you need to roll over their toughness to damage them. Toughnesses are usually around 5 or so, and the average weapon does 2d6 before any Edges or anything else.
>>
Backpack shisha pipe that doubles as flamethrower or smokescreen. Clockwork arm-exoskeleton that compensates recoil of a bigass revolver. Walking cane that shoots liquid nitrogen. Blinding flash built into monocle.
That how you mad science.

Once you get through the Character Creation and a round of combat, which you can adapt to surprisingly quickly despite how complicated it sounds on it's face, things can flow pretty smoothly.

As for running the game, keep in mind the Mad Science Reliability rolls, where any machine or alchemical concoction could backfire if you roll high on a d20. (only time when a Nat 20 is bad) Also, Jokers are wild cards, and the RED Joker is the player's friend. The BLACK Joker is your friend and will seriously fuck-up a characters day.

As for the enemies, you do NOT have to make them harder or adjust them very much. A lot of the critters that are stronger than just "mutant animals" have bullshit immunities and weaknesses that require quests in and of themselves.

For Example, Stone men. Just like it sounds on the tin, except they eat people (Or pretend to since, you know, they're rocks) and have supernaturally good hunting and tracking capabilities as long as they have their club in hand.
Weaknesses: They are afraid of blood that they didn't cause, so a player could scratch their hand and pull a "Back, you fiend!" a la a cross to a vampire. They can be lit on fire, but it takes twelve hours until they disintegrate, and until then they are a flaming rock-man of murder. And they can be stabbed with wooden stakes of a certain type. (Based on the ritual that made them)

Yeah, don't go hard on your players. The game will do that as written. But don't be afraid to call out players who fudge their rolls because I swear to GOD the Harrowed Huckster is pulling that shit left and right. (Bodyguard Hex that get's him 19 mother-fucking extra wounds, my aching ass.)

Thanks for the advice anon.

Is Reloaded a better system than the OG Deadlands? I've heard some conflicting reports from people.
>>
>>54697901

They're very similar systems, coming from someone who has owned and played both. Savage Worlds itself was basically a streamlined/improved version of Deadlands system actually.

You might as well go with Savage Worlds.
>>
>>54693330

Suggestions for the Savage Worlds version:

When GMing, be free with giving players Bennies. As others have said, Savage Worlds can get lethal in a hurry. Bennies are a player's life-line.

Remember that fire-fights don't all occur at close range, on flat plains, in clear daylight. That makes fire-fights less dangerous.

The incapacitation and death rules are very non-traditional. Read them carefully.
>>
Anybody have real gameplay stories from Deadlands?
>>
>>54698193
Nothing worth telling. I put one player through a drinking contest with a dead man, ran some train heists, players blew up a dirigible. Fun times, but nothing that really shines.

That said, any interest in some Deadlands adaptations of Barsoom races and shit? Also, stuff for Tripod Martians and Rockwell grey style aliens?
>>
>>54698193
I recommend starting with normal goons. Cattle rustlers, train robbers, bar fights, or some other mundane issue. Let the players learn how to not die before getting to the spooks in the shadows.
>>
Love this game
>>
>>54695290
Going from d&d 5e to deadlands was so jarring
Just witnessing my players starting off i gave them lower starting cash then recommended because i did not want everybody to have nothing to work up to
They get enough money to afford nicer things
one of them purchases a shotgun
I read the rules for think "wow thats a bit strong but im sure it will be ok"
They encounter a unnatural monster
One fucking blast that thing is gone
Shot guns are fucking magic in universes where magic is little to none

>I'm about to start running a SW game of Deadlands.

Hmm... I'm about to start playing a SW game of Deadlands. See you next Saturday?

It's my first time playing the system, actually, so I don't know where character should fall on the spectrum from grim to zany. The book plays it straight, but people who've storytimed it make it seem like Blazing Saddles.

First time playing original deadlands.
>everybody meets up in the saloon playing cards, hitting on prostitutes and sizing each other up.
>party of 8, three of which are gunslingers
>two of the gunslingers obviously have to see who is the quicker draw and go outside to have a shoot off
>third is quiet and doesnt look like the traditional two gun, quick draw artist so stays out of it
>they pull out a bottle of whiskey and toss it into the air
>both pull their guns and shoot and both miss
>third gunslinger, using a shotgun, had a slower initiative, shoots, and obliterates it with two shots before it can the ground.
>"You don't have to use pistols to be a good shot."

Later that session the party was fighting a chupacabra.
>Everyone was getting ready to find it and fight. >Tensions were high.
>It finally breaks out of hiding and charges the party.
>shotgun guy gets initiative this time, opens both barrels and drops it dead in its tracks
>fight over
>que rest of the adventure, everyone bitching that he's a big dirty cheater
>>
>>54693330
Someone he's only played Savage Worlds deadlands how does it differ from the original?

I know a rise is done every five points rather then four. But I was thinking of a house rule that in anyway seeing as a roll of 4 on a d4 is technically at least a 5 anyway.

So, weird question I know, but I gotta ask: if Deadlands D20 was a thing, do you think you could convert the D&D 5e system to run Deadlands?
>>
>>54704637

I wouldn't attempt it, and d20 Deadlands was a bad idea. It's just not a system that is meant for that kind of stuff. Just get the Savage Worlds version, it's both good and retains all of the flavor since SW is just the older Deadlands rules streamline and turned into a generic system.

Dead Birds (2006) is shittier, but has some good spooky ideas.

>The book plays it straight, but people who've storytimed it make it seem like Blazing Saddles.
I'd say the average tone is more like The Hateful Eight in that while there is some amount of unsettling mystery causing tension in an adventure the player characters tend to be slightly larger than life and as such are a bit less affected by the grimness that surrounds them. That is until they find themselves alone with a monster.

I've found the tone is pretty malleable. The books are written with some humor to them. You're gonna get some Blazing Saddles. You're gonna get some John Wayne. You're gonna get some spaghetti westerns. You're gonna get some Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Much like any game, too much of one element makes it bad. A healthy mix is what you really need for a campaign. Thats why stuff like WoD gets made fun of, because it's always trying to make nothing but an oppressive tone and it comes off as almost comedically tryhard.

That is Deadlands in a nutshell.

Had a character, Mormon preacher, lost his arm in the first session to a non combat train accident. He used a shotgun, double barreled, and was good enough to take out a problem quick enough that a slow reload wasn't a problem. He died three times.

Another character, shootist, his whole shtick was magically enhancing his guns. Airship full of enemies was coming but he had time to buff his gun and had a stack of chips, it got stupid real quick. High rate of fire with a damage increased to instant kill numbers, armor piercing of 'yep ' and range of practically line of sight, dropped a dozen per round for a while until his chips started running out and he had to pull back.

My first game was with a posse of Mad Scientists. Each one of us had the prerequisite Arcane Background (Mad Science) and the Mad Science Skill at five. That is where we diverged. My character worked with the Collegium and created Bullet-Repellent Clothes. Another specialized in Artillery and had a 12-pound Vapor Canon as well as some Congreave Rockets. The Third one was insane and is our resident pilot and repairman (Metal Mage). The last one was the infiltraitor and alchemist. He had a made a Ghost Rock applique that he could use to alter his appearance adding +5 to Disguise checks.

Well anyway, the only time I played that character the following happened: The posse drove into town in a Steam Wagon. The Wagon failed its reliabity check and we were stuck.

Well to make a long story short, All of our devices failed their reliability cheacks at the same time: The Congrave Rockets spun around and exploded near out location. My bullet Repellant Clothes failed to deflect all 15 of the Shotgun blasts. The Infiltraitor's Applique failed and melted his face right off the bone and the Vapor Cannon blew up, igniting all the leftover Ghost Rock and weapons.

When this happened, our pilot got the wheel fixed.

One time in a mostly solo game (my group is inconsistent as shit but my GM is flexible) my guy helped fight a bunch of bandits led by a werewolf.
After blasting down most of the bandits with a Winchester and my Schofield I saw the werewolf coming from my upper window perch and waited at the front door of the old house for him. He came in right through the front door and then I emptied a Sharps Big 50 right into the fucker right in his wolfy face which definitely ruined his day but didn't quite kill him.

So I bashed his skill in by two-handed swinging the butt of the big-ass rifle I just blew his eye out with.

It's a Savage Worlds version set in the Film Noir 20's. I liked playing it but I like the movies and their feel. You trade the unpeopled wastes for the isolation of the city. The game I played lost some of the weird west aspects of the original, like no natives, no critters, and few infernal contraptions. We played essentially a detective story in the Big Easy with some Call of Chtulu touches. The mechanics and the background are solid, how much you enjoy it will depend on your skill at storytelling and using the thematic elements.

I once played a full-on Pacifist (-5) New Scientist. It was a terribly fun ride that only got better after he died.

The only two inventions I made were effectively an amber-polyurethane in a grenade-like canister that would then take I think a TN 9 strength check to bust out of. The second were a pair of moonshoes to help against falls and increase pace.

The real fun was finding things that were practical as a utility item, had some sort of us in combat, and still offer some way to go terribly wrong.

As I was also the resident sawbones, I also stole the idea of the Medic's medigun from TF2 and tried to apply the idea of electroshock therapy in the most Deadlands-y way possible to help the fellow New Scientists of Salt Lake City. Sadly, I never got around to making those before the game ended.

One of my characters has a good chance of getting hanged, I was thinking of having her come back as a harrowed. Would that cheapen the experience if I did that? Should I leave it up to chance like the book says? Just worried about Mary-Sue. It's their first quest and she's been playing up her bloodlust hinderance very well. Killing someone who was recently possessed and attacked the group, AFTER the priest healed him and the demon lost control. Priest believes it's cold blooded murder and wants to see her answer to the town sheriff/marshal. But in a corrupt town her chances aren't good. Marshall is on his way and I was planning on him being an enemy of hers, she has that hinderance as well. So her chances of getting hanged are fairly high if she's brought to officials.

I want to run a Deadlands Noir game, but I don't really want to keep the Confederacy around. I'd still like there to be some major magical fallout left over from the supernatural civil war (contaminated warzones crawling with monsters, etc.) Any suggestions?
>>

Fuck the setting and run it as Prohibition-era Men In Black.

One of the ships brought in something cursed to port. The dockworkers are getting spooked. Deal with it.

A vampire in the French Quarter has been siring people without approval. Find out who, they probably have a den, clean it out, BEFORE Mardi Gras.

I remember that Masquerade.
>>
>>54754544
Why don't you like the Confederacy? I'd argue that a divided US is one of the most important parts of the setting fluff, for why events don't unfold as they do in real life.
>>
>>54755061
Seems like 90% of Deadlands games don't bother with the confederacy stuff.

The Rangers are Confederacy, and a huge part of the setting. Also, much cooler (and easier to enter) than their Northern counterpart, the Agency.

Gonna guess the reason is IRL drama politics. To be fair, Deadlands kinda does suffer from a few problems that have to be handwaved away even by the books themselves because it's a really bad fucking idea to bring them up IRL unless you want to get into the sorts of discussions that piss everyone at the table off by bringing attention to it instead of just playing the game (ie: slavery, women's places in society then, indians and all the stuff that went down with them, etc). Hence why the books just quickly go "Oh, and uh...All the slaves were freed even by the south/women are equal/etc etc and all this is mostly accepted because we'd get fucking roasted otherwise if we don't allow this".

Though it did make me laugh the female player I have was like "waitaminute, this isn't very accurate...". Because she's a history buff.
>>
Are the Deadlands Classic books a reprint of the 1996 rules, of the 1999 update, or a "third edition" of sorts? Been thinking about Marshallin' a game set in the Great Maze.
>>
>>54755061
The drive to settle the west was a direct result of the vast upheavals that resulted from the end of the Civil War. If the Confederacy and Union are still at it, cold or otherwise, there is not enough young men or political drive to go west and form the cowboy towns.
>>
>>54755973

Ghost Rock is supposed to be the answer to most of that. A reason for anyone to head out there, because you need that superfuel.
>>
>>54755625
At the risk of /pol/ing a dead horse, slavery was doomed by industrialization. Better methods and equipment for farming would blow away chattel slavery in short order even without a martial settlement. The wannabe aristocracy of the South would have big, beautiful ghostrock-powered pickers and planters to do the work. With the nation split, there's no 3/5th compromise so no worries about being out-voted by the more populous North so you could dump your freedmen off wherever. No slaves means no slave revolts so Southern manpower could move from policing to border defense. Can't demobilize the Army with a long hostile land border, so ladies would be obliged to take a more active role in the Southern workforce. The North had much more foreign immigration so they'd be slower to equalize the sexes. The South would be smart to try and attract more immigrants to redress the imbalance of population which could be interesting depending on where they came from.
So while the war started over slavery, slavery need not last as long as the conflict or continue after it. Our Civil War was fought to a forced conclusion such the South could not resist reunification. If the neither side could so totally prevail over the other then I believe the nations would remain divided short of a European power invading the continent.
>>
>>54756932

I meant more of "slavery" as a thing thats hard to bring up at the table because it either makes people uncomfortable because it's still such a hot topic even nowadays because politics and SJW garbage has thrust racism back to the forefront of "shit that gets people fighting", or you'll get some retard going "lol nigguhs".

Because lets face it, gamers are not the most socially adept folks.

I have run a session of Noir and my players found it great fun. >>54745059 sums it up fairly well but I will add that Noir is very much a game whose themes, at least in the core book, are very much reliant on less of a wild barely tamed land and more of the horrors that stalk the urban jungle. You could honestly do an intrigue and investigation heavy campaign as the book very much goes into detailing the strange intricacies within cities (ex. in New Orleans the French Quarter is pretty much run by the Italian Mafia who are at war with the Irish gangs and a local cabal of evil voodoo practitioners who were pushed out by the Mafia in the past.) and the complex relationship of groups that have existed around one another for decades.

Nothing too thrilling, but sure.

> Party consists of Southern Baptist Preacher, Muckraker Huckster, Billy the child, Old Greedy Prospector, and me, Catholic "DO NOT MURDER!" Mad Scientist

> Worst fear is to build anything that murders as demons whisper in my ears
> Party roughs it on horses, except for me. I had blown all my cash on chemicals and pieces for SCIENCE. Had a mule instead
> Preacher is out this session
> Party ends up trailed by a Jackalope
> Prospector eventually goes bust on Ridin' and displays the biggest shit-eating grin while asking "What could go wrong?"
> Bessy gets one way ticket to glue factory in the sky, forcing us to hide in cave
> Being a stuffy person, I go deeper in cave to change and get ganked by the jackalope
> Proceeds to eat my throat
> Posse shows up, can't shoot for shit
> Prospector finally nails the SoB. Marshal dumps something like a half dozen chips
> Jackalope runs away scot-free
> Bleed out
> hesdeadjim.jpg
> Party tosses some rocks on me and calls it a night
> Manitou starts her fun
> Manitou is /tg/'s dream, little girl who wants to stop badmen
> Breakdown in Hunting Grounds, build a gun and murder a man
> Come out even on Dominion somehow
> Next session
> Go bust on Dominion
> feelsbadman
> Wake up three days later in overalls and a straw hat. Have some loose change in my pockets and not much else.
> Somehow meet posse on the train we were heading to, call them out on their bullshit
> Huckster and Preacher are superstitious and suspicious
> Tell them I'm a doctor, I know what dead looks like and it ain't me
> Things go weird on train ride to the City O' Gloom.
> People go missing
> Strange sausage appears, staff think nothing of it
> soylentgreen.avi

Part 1/2
>>
>>54767798
>>54770048

Part 2/2

Now, by this point, we had already faced one Wendigo twice over. The first time, we pissed ourselves and managed to run back to town safely. The second time, it took us blowing most of our chips and tricks to put it in boothill.

> Hear rumbling in the caboose
> See man change due to sausage
> Somehow no one fails guts checks
> Preacher, Prospector, Billy, and Huckster pull out every rifle and pistol they have
> Hit, Ace, Ace, Ace
> headshot
> Count first coup
> Neat, end of session?
> Nope, Manitou still doing Manitou things
> More people end up mutilated
> Preacher calls me out, threatens to put a bullet in my head
> Manitou in control threatens to throw self off train with Springboot invention to survive
> Not just me pulling shit, someone put ghost rock in the engine!
> Speeding into Salt Lake City, conductor gone missing
> Up to me to pull fuel from the fire to prove innocence
> Marshal plays https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHWdXIEcFNw as I rip chunks of ghostrock out of engine
> Last minute of song, slowly roll into the station
> End session

Sadly, the game only lasted another two sessions. I forget what the Huckster and Prospector were doing. Under the Manitou's control, I was trying to get on Hellestromme's good side and work under him. While we were all in town doing our own things, Billy ended up running into one of the Preacher's former, now-undead flock and was poisoned. Preacher ended up getting lost in Junkyard, surrounded by mechanical cats, and falling into the sewers. He died of dysentery.

Thinking of having a legendary campaign beginning, have some legendary level players fight Stone and get them killed. Essentially the players are the children of those characters who want revenge against Stone. It says that to kill him you need the bullets that he was betrayed with, where would be some good places to go looking for the bullets? I was going to have a few embedded in his back for sure, but I wanted a few more somewhere else.
>>
>>54782642
While conceptually that could work, don't be afraid to pull shenanigans if the characters work their ass off for an alternative way to cap his ass.

For example, a story I heard about a group who made the ultimate anti-Reckoner holy bullet. Silver taken from the Rocky Mountains, which was given a Shamanic Blessing by Sitting Bull himself, blessed by a Jewish rabbi, a Catholic priest, and a Protestant minister. (There may have been other things I'm forgetting about)

They confront Stone with their one bullet of "Fuck You." And Stone, not realizing what they're packing, smirks and lets them have the first shot. They roll the damage which amounts to, "Fuck this guy."

DM smiles and spends a bunch of fate chips. "You missed."

One player immediately brings out a Legend chip. "Fuck that. It hits him right between the eyes."

And that was how some PC's managed to kill one of the worst mistakes ever made by a gaming company in the name of their fucking metaplot without following their railroad tracks.

Seriously, I find the concept of Stone annoying as fuck, and I think he was made by a That Guy on the writing staff.
>>
>>54775796

>One player immediately brings out a Legend chip. "Fuck that. It hits him right between the eyes."

Some people may deride any kind of resource mechanic where the players can seize narrative/mechanical control without having to roll a single die but damn if it doesn't make for some perfectly just moments.

I don't mind a meta-plot to some degree (makes the world feel like it is still turning beyond what the PCs see) but I wonder why did the Deadlands team stick so very close to one path instead of offering a few branching options?

'Course, the mines are a thread for later. Right now my only player is a fresh deputy and trying to solve what might be a murder, might be an animal attack, and in reality, is both yet neither.
>>

>And that was how some PC's managed to kill one of the worst mistakes ever made by a gaming company in the name of their fucking metaplot without following their railroad tracks.

As someone who really fucking hates "Overlord" NPC's who exist solely to fuck with players and serve as a hand of the GM (see: pretty much any old Vampire in VtM, The Lady of Pain in Planescap, etc), Stone I think was done right. How was he done right?

Because he specifically doesn't fucking bother with anyone but the best of the best. He is the end of the road, when you've done everything else and need a high tier antagonist to come fuck your day up. He doesn't show up out of nowhere just to jerk off on your day like the Lady of Pain with retarded rules, he doesn't influence the setting beyond a very specific circumstance, and he doesn't even know you exist until you're literally on the top OF the top of the 1%.

The ONLY bullshit part about him and the few opponents near his tier of "Holy fuck you gotta be really strong to deal with it" is that ALL of their fucking weaknesses, the only way to kill them, you're supposed to find out about...How? How the fuck is anyone supposed to know you need a fucking conquistador's weapon to kill raven? How the fuck are you supposed to know you need Grimme's fucking walking stick that was TOSSED INTO A FUCKING OCEAN MAZE like 20 years ago? Thats the only real complaint, their weaknesses are too fucking obscure, how are you supposed to learn about this stuff without a pure asspull?

Stone at least you can make him kill himself by making him set off a bunch of dynamite or something (the whole "can only be killed by the bullets that killed him originally, or a weapon fired by his own hand" thing).

The point of those weaknesses is that it requires an entire campaign just to learn about them. It's up to the DM to find out how to do that.
Demons love screwing over each other as much as mortals, and good spirits WANT to win, that's always a good angle for information.

The part that chafes my hide is how the metaplot is "All heroes die, Reckoners win" and the developers specifically wrote an adventure where the point was to kill Stone, but only ONE of him because timey-wimey shenanigans allowed there to be two of them running around. So even if you win that module; "But the future refused to change..."

You want to say, "The bad ending is the true ending." That's fine, we can still play our games and possibly have him come around as an ultimate showdown.

You don't even STAT him in the first edition, because then the characters can possibly kill him, and write a story SOLELY for the purpose of saying, "Fuck you, there's two of him, you solved nothing." And I call you a taint-sniffing cock-weasel. That's shitty railroading, right there.

Then again, I DO have an allergic reaction to that sort of thing, since it's the same thing that the ultimate That Guy pulled in the campaign from hell. (The BBEG was a DM self-insert, who pulled Doctor Doom "it was a stand-in" tricks with clones or "made copies" of whatever totally unique super weapon the players managed to destroy.)
>>
>>54785663

I take it all a different way. Current Stone is actually 2nd chance Stone sent back to try and ensure shit goes off without a hitch. You're already in the 2nd timeline.

Hell on Earth is an optional game set where the 2nd timeline did end up losing.

tl;dr "Multiple timelines".
>>
>>54782642

Fields of Gettysburg. You have to get to the scribe or the quartermaster or whoever kept the records from his platoon and find out where and when he was shot, and then start digging. Even then, you've still got a 2 in 3 chance that those are someone else's bullets, as Gettysburg was a hell of a battle.

Was it long enough ago in-universe for there to be re-enactors? That could be an interesting little diversion.

Or maybe you need to find the armory that supplied those bullets, a now-abandoned ironmill in the Jersey Pine Barrens that sold bog iron to the Rebs on the side.

Or, of course, one could simply travel back in time to get them on the day of the incident.
>>
>>54785663
Wait wait, I HAVE The Devil's Tower Adventure. It specifically says THE GOOD GUYS WON, so the Reckoners used the last of their power to sent Stone back to try and change it. Also interesting to note that the Stones HATE each other, which is why they avoid each other when possible, and are only working together out of self interest. It even says something about being able to talk them into killing each other. Which works because "weapon fired by his own hand."
Meaning Hell on Earth is the timeline that managed to get changed, but the "real" timeline the Good Guys won. You can run it either way you want, but one makes for a much more interesting adventure setting.

What's your biggest complaint about Deadlands?
(other than metaplot fuckery) Mine is not really a complaint, but i don't think my players would be up to it, as they aren't the biggest western fans, still though, i think i could ease them in to it with Noir and HOE.

So I only own reloaded and a couple of classic adventures. Though I played a very, very short classic Deadlands back in high school. From what I've seen and what little I remember, the metaplot is basically the same. Only a few minor changes here and there. None that stick out really.
>>
>>54805146

How obscure a lot of creature weaknesses are. Thats pretty much my only real complaint. Some also might as well not have been bothered with (like Wendigo's weakness to hot tallow being poured down the throat, like, really? You gonna try to hold that thing down?)
>>
>>54805395
tbf, a lot of irl mythological creatures have weird weakness, like the Fae with cold iron, vampires with a bag of rice, etc....
>>
>>54805860

I know, but far as I know the wendigo's mythical weakness was just plain fire. I don't remember hot tallow down the throat being a thing.

Unless it is. Is it?
>>
>>54805997
I think you gotta kill the guy inside of it.
>Some believe that the human person continues to reside within the Wendigo, specifically where its heart should be. This person is frozen, and the only way to kill a Wendigo is to kill the human within it as well. A few legends state that the frozen person is successfully rescued from inside the creature; in most cases, however, death is the only way to free a person from the Wendigo.

Both wrong guys, I'm sorry.

Deadlands Wendigos, all three different types, have the same weakness of pouring hot tallow down their throats. And that is LITERALLY the only way to perma-kill them, otherwise they come back more pissed for than ever.

Oh, and the other two types of wendigo are white wendigos (bigger and meaner than the normal ones) and flying wendigos.

>>54791042
Unfortunately yes, even though we had one more adventure after that before the Indian's player cashed out of the game.

>>54794743
Look up That Guy or Mary Sue on suptg, there's three long threads deconstructing every available piece of that unholy train wreck.

For the most sheerly horrifying example, imagine having a DM who is using a(n orders of magnitude than the Emperor of Man) psychic self-insert as the BBEG, who could use out of character knowledge to thwart the players because the self-insert was reading the DM's mind.

And when the players called him out and said they wanted to try that too, his response was, "It only works between characters with psionic class-levels, and none of you are psychic in real life!"
>>
>>54807280
I meant irl Wendigoag (that's apparently the correct way to pluralise Wendigo). I imagine if in-game, they used the irl way, it would have too easy.

Jeez. Im a terrible writer, but here goes.

>playing an aged mountain man who's had an encounter or two with the supernatural
>found a posse to run with after some interesting circumstances
>eventually heard rumors of a some creature coming out on the full moon
>I've trained for this(backstory is I fought a werewolf in the past)
>eventually run into man in the moonlight staking out a weird group setting up a massive amount of explosives.
>I raise my rifle to challenge him, but he welcomes the shot.
>drop rifle and grab giant lumbermans axe with a silver edge(belongin's 1 FTW)
>We rush each other and draw the exact same card for 2 turns straight.
>We meet blow for blow for a few rounds before he manages to scamper off.

Best I got, it was really epic at the time. I was the only one who could really do any damage to him since the rest of the posse were just gunslingers and a Doc.
>>
>>54807841
Had a similar-ish situation in my campaign, though the crazy bastard and his "protege" weren't related to the main badguy of the module at all. Plus, we didn't have an epic square off, because I had a flamethrower and the others had Gatling shotguns. Werewolf hamburger, mm-mm-Mmm!

Liver-Eating Johnson. His wife was killed by the Crow, so he killed three hundred of them and ate their livers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liver-Eating_Johnson

>One tale ascribed to Johnson was of being ambushed by a group of Blackfoot warriors in the dead of winter on a foray to sell whiskey to his Flathead kin, a trip that would have been over five hundred miles (800 km). The Blackfoot planned to sell him to the Crow, his mortal enemies, for a handsome price. He was stripped to the waist, tied with leather thongs and put in a teepee with only one, very inexperienced guard. Johnson managed to break through the straps, then knocked out his young guard with a kick, took his knife and scalped him, then quickly cut off one of his legs. He made his escape into the woods, surviving by eating the Blackfoot's leg, until he reached the cabin of Del Gue, his trapping partner, a journey of about two hundred miles (320 km).

so forgive me if they have some kind of supernatural meat detection that I don't know about, but couldn't you trigger this by rigging up a scarecrow made of tallow with some blood to attract it, then set the thing on fire while the Wendigo is eating?

Hell, could you torch the thing to death while it chokes on a body till the fat renders down? grisly sure, but I figure your players will have a fair bit of grit if they're trying to take down a wendigo.

>he is English and very old
>his mom is a witch
>his mother is also related to the Wheatley clan, maybe even being the source of it's unusual features
>His age, parentage, nationality and Deadland's tendency to spice up irl figures, spawned the theory of him being Mordred

There is also a graphic novel about him, it came out 2 years ago.

So my mad scientist character decided to make "The Syringe that Should Not Be", to inject a tincture form of Ghost Rock into one of the other party members. It did not go well, but science is a messy business and you cannot make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.
>>

To be fair Jesus would be too obvious and kind of diminish the strangeness of the setting in addition to being controversial similar to why White Wolf refuses to have any supernatural faction be a reason/big player in WWII or 9/11.

How do party interactions usually work in Deadlands? Too much shit trying to eat them all to allow for typical white knight/ That Guy infighting, I hope?

I don't want to say too much in case someone else is reading this, but a new player in our group wants a character that shouldn't need any weapons because it can kill with the edge, while another plays everything like a paladin.

Should be good for storytime later at least.
>>
>>54816617

Yes and no, he was hyped up really hard, like he was it was the second coming or something, in the adventure he first showed up in, it was suggested that the Marshal not actually show him, saying they had big plans for him (they didn't stat him either). He was never brought up again, other than in his graphic novel.

Don't know about the fire bit, but I'm looking at the Marshal's handbook right now on Wendigos.

Only attracted to human meat, so maybe the scarecrow with human blood can work, because the precise wording is that a Wendigo dies "The Instant" that hot tallow is poured down it's throat. So rigging up a proverbial waterballon of melted fat in a scarecrow should work.

One funny thing to note, baseline wendigo's have a Mien (charisma) stat of 4d12.

Then you see it's overawe (intimidation) is 7d12, and the rules for tests of will are as follows:

Overawe is resisted by the targets Guts.
A success makes the victim Unnerved, which means they take a -4 on their next action.
A raise makes them shaken, which means they lose their highest action card on top of being unnerved, or lose any card they have up their sleeve.
2 raises, and they're Broken too. Unnerved, Shaken, and the Marshal draws a white fate-chip from the pot.

Fucking hell that's nasty.

Huh, rules for creating wendigos...

If a PC has to eat human flesh for some reason, secretly roll a d20, add 1 for every new victim after the first, add 2 if this happens in winter. On 20 or higher, they become a wendigo.

White Wendigo's are made if the person eats their friends and/or family, and Flying Wendigo's are made from food MISER's rather than cannibals. Roll d20 anytime the character hides food from a companion and let's them starve to death, add 1 for every additional victim when/if they do it again.
>>
>>54824227
>Fucking hell that's nasty.

Creatures in Deadlands usually are. Also thats the old rules for it, not the SW/Reloaded ones. Not like the Savage Worlds one is any less nasty though.
>>
>>54816617
>How do party interactions usually work in Deadlands? Too much shit trying to eat them all to allow for typical white knight/ That Guy infighting, I hope?

Imagine old pulp stories where the main characters can loathe each other but tend to manifest this as bickering and will always pull together when the scrappin' starts.

Honestly the likelihood of inter-party conflict isn't tied to the system so much as it will be tied to the players in your game and their attitudes. If your paladin type wants to redeem every monster and that guy is set to shoot everything dead they are going to need to make some conceits out of character to not let it affect the game too much or else you are in for an aggravating time partner. Good luck.
>>
>>54824227
>>54825254

Noir has something less nasty but still just as awesome: Hydes.

During Prohibition when bootlegging was all the rage some ding-dongs decided to try selling some of their bathtub booze on the novelty of it bein' filtered through ghost rock to give it a little extra kick. Boy did they underestimate what they did since when some poor sap drinks this "red rum" they become afflicted with a little condition that makes them flip their lids and turn into giant hulkin' monstrosities whenever they're feeling spun out.

Shaking them twice does nothing, their Strength is a d12+2, and any Wild Card who finds themselves transformed retains their Wild Card status.
>>
Just found out about this game when my family wanted to start playing a new game and wanted to try Western. My brothers are hype after finding about the poker mechanics and stuff, they love that shit. I already got the Player's Guide and bought the Marshall's Guide from Pinnacle.

Also I'm sorry if this is a taboo or something (I'm not a /tg/ regular so don't know), but I tend to prefer using the pre-made adventures, at least until we've done enough of those and feel confident enough trying to do something homegrown. What are the best ones for Classic? I've read a little and both Devil's Tower and the trilogy of like Ghostbusters/Rain of hell/Dead Presidents or whatever sound good, but they both were also described as designed for experienced posses. What's a good adventure from Classic to throw the posse into after, say, coming fresh out of the starter adventure in the Marshall's Giude?

Also if anyone happened to know a link to most of the sourcebooks for Classic (similar to the previous link I see a helpful anon posted for Reloaded/Savage Worlds), I'd certainly appreciate it. Sorry for taking up your time.

Thank the Almighty for this thread. Deadlands has been a system I've come back to again and again since I got the Reloaded book back in aught 6.

Once in awhile, I can cajole people into a session or two (Prairie Tick infestations are hilarious btw) but more often than not, in my circles I'm the only who digs on westerns enough to be fired up about the game/setting.

>tfw when you have/backed all the plot point campaigns and no one will let you do Flood BBQs

>tfw when you back Noir and get an NPC made with your likeness, but no one even talks shit about your shitty hitman.

Noir also scratches some fun itches, but for some reason "Fighting mobsters and monsters" doesn't sell folks like it should in my opinion. Fuck everyone wanting to do stupid D&D shit.

Any advice on how to incorporate the themes from blood meridian into the story. Was thinking of sending the party out hunting for Comanche and along the way the encounter a figure like Judge Holden, but only in passing, maybe have him be a herald of disaster, always appearing just before everything goes to shit for the party.

Any more general advice running a Deadlands game, unfortunately I am not incredibly familiar with the western genre, my experience mainly being Blood Meridian, the Son, 3:10 to Yuma remake, the hateful 8 and Django unchained. any advice in the regards well?

Honestly, those are some really good reference points for Westerns.

My advice is have the party going out hunting, only to have something be hunting them. They find animals and/or people "Savaged" by Comanches, only to find the Comanches later and either avoid the posse or surrender quickly to withdraw as an evil is drawing close to the posse and they want no part of it. Just all these things to ratchet up the tension.

Basically, take story out on the wilderness and give it at least 2 explanations, the rational and the supernatural. Don't let the players figure out which one it should be until close to the end (Or as a midpoint twist) make the characters doubt their sanity, until it's well and truly gone.

Not necessarily Western tips, but hope that helps. I find the X-Files approach works well for drawing people in.

So how would you run a campaign in the maze? From what it seems in the Marshall's handbook almost all of the land is owned by miners with all the waters belonging to either confederates or possibly Kang's soldiers. just seems like there's not a lot of territory that isn't trespassing.
>>
>>54843389
The maze strikes me as that way intentionally. You ain't going in there unless you're already hard as fuck and able to handle some really bad situations.

Especially because, while I haven't read the books for the full mechanics on this shit, Father Grimm of Lost Angels did a massive ritual that causes all non-followers of his to look demonic and evil if they are Blessed/Hucksters/Shamans/Harrowed and within a couple hundred miles of his city.

And somewhere in the maze is the only thing that can kill him, the walking stick belonging to the original Father Grimm, since the current one is a bullshit imposter after the first one got eaten alive by his psychotic flock.

Hence, Maze is full of shit that is "do not enter, ever" unless you're REALLY prepared and high-leveled.
>>
>>54843389
If you are going to do anything with the Maze, I would highly recommend reading the book that focuses on it. I think it's The Flood?

Anyway, it contains rules specifically for being in the Maze, as well as the supernatural shit that happens when you step into Famine's domain. It's very cool.

Well this just bummed me out. I'm not a big downer ending person. >>
>>54846049
The people I play with are all my brothers, so making a selfish stink about wanting to go against them would be a bad strategic move, and I was outnumbered, so I couldn't really "make" them switch. Also part of it is that I had already sunk money into buying some of the Classic books before I even knew Reloaded still had a lot of the stuff they insisted on Classic for (the poker cards handling almost everything), so I didn't want to switch to Reloaded and feel like I wasted my money.

If it comes down to it we'll find other ways to make it easier. Sure we'll have a hell of at ime
>>
>>54846152
You can buy every physical reloaded book for.... I think under $120.
>>
>>54846152
Or, you could say "Fuck that." And have them beat the Reckoners.

Something my friends brought up when I was bitching about Jasper-DMPC-from-hell-Stone is that he was sent back in time because in one possible future, the Reckoner's got their shit pushed in and had to do a last resort Terminator "Sent back in time" thing.

If you're DMing, you could totally have the campaign NOT end in a literal or metaphorical TPK due to the end being the same no matter what the PC's do.

You're the DM. The Game has given you a guideline, but YOU'RE the one who lays down the railroad tracks.

Also, while I'm thinking about it.
>>54807999
I went through over a dozen adventure modules looking for other Counting Coup powers. LITERALLY the only other one I found is from some Anasazi elder. (I used ctrl F and the word coup so I don't know all the details) A harrowed who kills him gets the Soul Eater power or upgrades it a notch. (As opposed to the monster I already listed that just gives it to you if you don't already have it.)

So, barring a change in the other books, it looks like my cheat-sheet is the ONLY canonical coup powers for Deadland's classic. I'll keep looking.
>>

Slight correction. The Bloody Sunday ritual was so Grimme and his follower's powers look like Divine/Blessed Miracles anywhere within 75 miles of Lost Angels, or in a bubble around pieces of his shattered altar that his missionaries tote around the West (Otherwise, it'd be black magic shit, and he can't do that look pious, can he?)

The Maze is a tough place, but not impossible for low level characters, I very much recommend looking up the Flood as it's got a great intro for players and gives you a good idea of the run of the Maze. If you're posse can't have fun charging the Mexican army and beating Santa Ana with his own leg, I don't why you would play with them.

So we're starting to play Classic (We'll probably give Reloaded a try later on after we go through most of Classic). We're the kind of people that tend to mostly do the set adventures and such.

The problem I have is there doesn't seem to be a good way of telling how fit each adventure is for a party based on experience. We're really only used to D&D before this, where adventures always said "For Level 4-6 party" or something like that.

The closest I see on this in these Deadlands adventures is just a few saying "For experienced adventurers". But how do I determine that? The only one I found that has a flat-out suggestion of experience is Dead Presidents stating a party should already have 5 Grit (which to me just seems to mean that they should have already done at least 5 adventures before this one?)

So p much what I'm trying to decide is which adventures are best fitting for a posse that's just starting out (after the "Comin' Round the Mountain" adventure in the Marshal's Guide). I eventually want to build them up to what I've read elsewhere are really good adventures (Devil's Tower Trilogy, and Ghost Busters/Rain o' Death/Dead Presidents), but I don't know how much other adventures they should be doing before they're "experienced" enough to handle either of those trilogies, or which adventures ARE "appropriate" for beginner/novice posses. Any help would be much appreciated, sorry for taking up your time.

That changes once you start getting into shit that can't reasonably be damaged by normal weaponry due to resistances or outright immunities.

I can only speak for Reloaded (in which 5 grit is a ridiculous, epic badass amount), but it's not really level based, in the D&D sense of everything getting linearly stronger with the players.

A typical novice-level encounter in Deadlands pairs the players with one or two standard enemies, like a zombie, bandit, etc each. Wild cards and things with insane toughnesses or special weaknesses are probably meant to be ganged up on, while obviously weak enemies are meant to outnumber the players.

Also, TPKs and player deaths are going to be pretty common. That's okay.

Specifically, look at Don't Drink the Water, and Guess Who's Coming to Donner. Simple, short adventures with no historical figures and titles that give away the twist.

Stone and a Hard Place says the doctor that treated him as he died/reanimated kept the bullets in a jar and fled to the Louisiana swamps.

Conceptually, it had its moments. The pseudo bayonets on every gun were neat and my Mad Scientist character is thinking about doing that to basic armament in our DL game. Along with creating the rifle equivalent to a sawed off shotgun that can be hidden under longcoats/overcoats.

For those who aren't in the know Dark Watch: Old West train robbery ends up being an ancient vampire instead of money, MC is vamped and then forced to join a vampire hunting group. Google image search the weapons of the game, they're pretty bitchin'. And the Sniper Rifle is Sororitas approved.

Doesn't the game also span like 3 different eras?

I had some questions about Deadlands classics.

How does dynamite work exactly? How many actions to light it and throw? How long til it goes off if it doesn't prematurely detonate?

Do you roll for stun for PCs and enemies whenever they take a wound or do you ignore it?

What penalty do you give for being wounded in different areas, or as a result of successful called shots? If I take a called shot at someone's knee, do they fall prone and then move at a limp, or just mark wounded in the knee section of the character sheet. How about an eyeball shot at -10? I just follow common sense "realism" here, right?

Do yourself a favor and run it off the comics, not the abortion that is the series.
