Here's the skinny on what this thread is gonna be: we're gonna roll up some factions for a corner of the post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland using these tables I made a long ass time ago https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Post_Apocalyptic_Society_Creation_Tables that someone has kindly posted on 1d4chan. There's gonna be 3-5 factions, depending on how stuff shakes out, and hopefully this'll be interesting enough to get some maps or art or writefagging going. If none of the factions turn out "normal" enough, then there will be some minor settlements throughout the region that are more akin to standard settlers/survivors for them to interact with.

Ya dig? Good.

Let's get this started with a 1d100 for the genetic state of the first faction.

Where do they get all those tiny skulls
>>
>>53967565
>Wretched: Riddled with tumours and malformations, these poor sods are kept at an arm's length by everyone else. Ugly and deformed, think Hills have eyes. Very high infant mortality, and fewer still make it to adulthood. Always in need of breeders.

Rough cop for these guys. Now another 1d100 for what their overall culture is like. All the rolls are d100s, so I'll stop saying that from now on.

The skulls aren't tiny, the guys are giant.

>>53967565
Hobbits or dwarves or mice.
>>
>>53967595
I guess we'll use this for the culture of this first group, so they're...

>Raiders: An unfortunate truth of the wastes is the prevalence of raider gangs. Savage and violent, they typically take more than they make but there are exceptions. Most don’t settle down in any place for too long, and tend to use up what they have quickly. Many treat the apocalypse as a sort of hedonistic paradise, murdering for fun, using homemade narcotics, and generally raping to their hearts content.

Makes sense, given the fact they're pretty fucked up.

Now a roll for how they run themselves.

>Dictatorship: Whether they go by mayor, king, chief, tyrant, boss or any other blandishment of power, these men are the movers and shakers in the wastes. Strong willed and often ruthless, singular individuals often take charge of small groups, as has been the case in every historical era. They may have a close knit inner circle, but they always rule with absolute power when it comes down to it.

Would make sense for a group of highly diseased raiders. I doubt they'd stick together if they tried to run as a democracy.

I'll need two dice, yes two, for cultural quirks.

>>
>>53967822
Alright so they have a...

>Death Cult: Unsurprisingly among the blighted folk of the wastes, some have taken to worshipping death, or the idea of a “Good death”. Perhaps it’s a mythical afterlife, a desire to see the world well and truly die, or simply a nihilistic belief that death is an inevitable constant in life, for whatever reason this group worships death itself.

And a...

>Distinctive Icon: A motif or symbol runs throughout the groups structures, clothes, and vehicles. Maybe it’s a specific animal or object, or maybe it’s something less specific like bullets or flames.

Makes sense, given that they're lives are gonna be pretty short and brutish. Need something to assure them it's okay to die and something to tie them together in the first place.

Now another two dice for what makes their appearance distinctive.

>Leathers: Never ride without your distinctive leather jackets and other assorted biker gear. Never.

And

>Uniforms: Standardized appearance across the group and it’s leadership. Makes your group seem more cohesive, but can be hard to maintain.

Pretty interesting actually, given these guys are otherwise kind of generic raider freaks. Seems they take a little bit of pride in their biker gear or what have you.

Also, FYI, after we roll up this band I'm gonna side step for a second and have us roll up some facts about the wasteland itself. Tech level, weather, status of mutated fauna, and all that. I should have done that at the beginning of the thread but it just occurred to me now. Because I'm an idiot.

Now a roll for what these guys have that allows them survive at all.

>Military Grade: Exactly what you think. Military stockpiles of armor, guns, and gear. Usually live in military bunkers or other fortified locations.

Well, that would certainly explain how they manage to survive at all. Bunch of podunk mutant looneys gets a hold of AR-15s and RPGs.

Now give me a dice for what their apparently very high quality vehicles are.

Intredasting. I'm not totally sure what to say about this if they're getting their stuff from a military dumping ground. Maybe lots of stuff jurry-rigged from multiple different vehicles? A helicopter front stitched onto a humvee? Would certainly make sense for what we have so far.

Either way, two more dice for what actually sets their vehicles apart.

>Spikey: Cars are covered in spikes. Pretty simple really. Good for keeping people off your hood and exploding ordnance before it hits the main body of the car. Actual functional version of the same thing in the appearance section.

And

>De-Construction Equipment: Cars are mounted with buzzsaws, mini-excavators, and plows for wrecking enemy vehicles.

Well, they're pretty much armed to the teeth with whatever they've scavenged. Pretty much just the Buzzards from Fury Road too.

>>53968263

This car is everything anyone could ever want and it’s certainly made a name for itself. When a group rolls up with this thing, people know who they are. Takes the form of whatever your generic type of vehicle is.

Interesting. The pinnacle of their engineering and mechanical skill?
>>
Guys. Guys.

We just made the HELLS ANGELS.

Alright, you guys discuss this first band of mutated miscreants for a few minutes and get them properly hashed out while I finish typing up the wasteland tables themselves. I'll post a pastebin here with those in probably 10-15.

I could just keep them in my head, but I'd prefer if you guys were able to keep me honest.
>>
>>53968360

What if the world was an irradiated wasteland because of a failed alien invasion? If it's in Eastern Europe, maybe it's a frozen hellscape instead of a typical desert?
>>
>>53968415
Exactly. They were probably bikers or greasers before the bombs fell, and they stuck around doing the same thing. Probably raided a military base early on, chopped down all the vehicles, and used to weapons to continue their warpath ever since.
>>
>>53968370
>Legendary Car

So the helicopter mounted on the humvee (or a big military truck) with the blades reinforced to be used to "de-construct" victims?
>>
>>53968434

I would like that. Cars keep you warm and most people have a coal oven in their car.

>>53968370
>>53968440
Or they are decendants of conscripts. Once the apocalypse happened the officers got out or were killedina mutiny. What was left wasa gang of young soldiers with to much weapons and no goal. It would fit that the hells angels were founded by veterans.

>Captcha is helicopters
>>
>>53968440
I'm picturing a lot of their cultural mores being lifted from rock music and greaser lifestyles, without knowing the context. They think various bands are saints, or godly figures. They interpret the words of Johnny Cash as distant omens of a strange future. They think all the pomade they keep finding is for sacred fires. After so long they interpret the world through what little they can remember of their ancestor's lives.
>>
>>53968484

What if the militia and hells angels were originally separate factions, but slowly became one over generations of interbreeding?

Quick question, I heard some of you guys mentioning Eastern Europe. Should I put an option for a different country than the States in the wasteland creation tables, or not bother because it makes things too complicated? >Dictatorship: Follow one leader.

>Death Cult: Gotta kill kill kill

>Distinctive Icon: Probably a tombstone

>Leathers and uniforms, clearly bikers.

>Scrap: Can trade scrap if need be because they have a lot of it from stolen places.

>Drive makeshift vehicles covered in spikes and buzzsaws, and their legendary vehicle is just the perfect blend of speed, strength, and usefulness.
>>
>>53968840
Just an idea here, but what if the Dictator's title was The Man? When The Man comes around gets a whole new meaning, and it's also pretty ambiguous and spooky for enemies and targets alike. Also, whole dynasties could start around the idea that all of the Mans are descended or reincarnated or incarnated from the Man in Black. Other men choose other colors or other themes, but they hold the faith that one day the Man in Black will come again, to lead them into a ring of fire that spans the world, and with him shall they Cut Down their enemies and ride forever free of the holds of their mythical hell of Full-Soem, free of Sheriffs and Deputies and Men of Reno. They shall ride Black, and nothing will ever stop them again.
>>
>>53968840

>Wretched

Its the apocalypse

>Raiders

Fits for a mix of bikers and soldiers gone evil.

>Dictatorship

Remnants of the military hierarchy mixed with influences from bike gang structure. Lead by a general, inner circle of sergeant-at-arms for example.

>Death Cult

Maybe they use fear as a weapon ? And at some point they started believing their own image. We are the angels of death etc.

>Distinctive Icon: Probably a tombstone

Fitting.

>Leathers and uniforms, clearly bikers.

Weird mix of old uniforms, leatherjackets and bikler gang patches ? Me likey.

>Scrap

Maybe they only trade with people they deem honorouable foes ?

>Drive makeshift vehicles covered in spikes and buzzsaws

Weird mix of bikes and cars mashed together with military hardware.

>and their legendary vehicle is just the perfect blend of speed, strength, and usefulness

Maybe its the old generals/chapter presidents car. It has religious meaning because it announces if a settlement is ripe for killing. It is covered with intricate pictures, the skulls of worthy enemies and is generally in mint condition.
>>
>>53969018
I'd play a campaign about needing to slay the various lieutenants of the gang (the Man in Green, the Man in Blue, the Man in Red) before eventually taking down The Man himself and learning once and for all what they're doing with all those old Johnny Cash records.

Read through it, noticed only one faction was down, just couldn't help myself and figured I may as well roll something up. Doing it individually doesn't have quite the same feel as doing it with a group tho. Still, nice table, anon!

>GENETICS - Part-Lives
Slightly mutated and irradiated, but still fairly normal looking. Maybe their skin is toughened to the heat and rough terrain of the wastes, at the cost of high rates of skin cancers.
>CULTURE - Mercs
Drift across the wastes, fight for coin and try to survive.
>LEADERSHIP - Consensus
Turns out they have some sort of ethics and old world values. Wannabe road warriors.
>QUIRKS - Pyromaniacs, """Intellectual"""
Mercenaries with a penchant for technology with a big destructive streak. Maybe they make use of fuel and plasma cutters to salvage vehicle parts and cut off heads, and fight for a share of whatever salvage is left over? Alternatively they could engage in Brotherhood of Steel tier cargo cultism, jealously guarding their secrets. Maybe integrate the pyromania too. "Knights of the Flame" or whatever.
>APPEARANCE - Gas Masks, Uniform
Makes sense for those around a lot of smoke to wear gas masks, plus the intimidation factor never hurts. Possibly remnants of an old world organization?
>RESOURCE - Water, the lifeblood of the wastes
They gotta have something valuable to maintain all their shit.
>EQUIPMENT - Well-Kept
Now we're getting somewhere. Probably raided some sort of armoury or garage they're based out of.
>MOTORS - Classics
Muscle cars, police cruisers, trucks and maybe a few motorbikes. Similar to the Bad Cops and ex-MFP in Lord Humungus' gang.
>MOTOR GEAR - Spikes, Black Paint
Set your car's bonnet on fire, cover it in shards of steel and ram it into the side of a van, shine on your crazy fucking diamonds
>FLAGSHIP - A FUCKING TAAANNNNK. Enough said.

That said, none of this seems set in stone by any means. Anyone have any ideas for names, themes, a leader figure or anything that just might be cool?

Alright since you rolled the same thing twice I'm gonna take this guy's >>53969423 first roll. So our unique landmarks are...

>60-80 Very tall thing: A radio tower, singularly tall skyscraper, or otherwise. This is a manmade monolith that can be seen for miles
>40-50 A Quagmire: A region known for being very difficult to traverse. Maybe it's a bog, maybe it's a perpetual sandstorm. In any case, it'll be a big factor in trade routes and the like.
>1-20: A Battlefield. Decaying hulks of the End Times all piled for the world to see. Rusting tanks, planes, and the like along the bodies of their operators.

Well, seems are city as a flooding issue in one area, a bunch of wrecked military gear in another, and a very tall landmark somewhere in it.

Well, it appears we have some relatively "normal" people to counterpoint the first faction of lunatics. As I mentioned though, if there aren't enough "normal" people we'll say there are smaller communities scattered about.

Now give me more dice.
>>
>>53969536

>Very tall thing

>>
>>53969536
>Tall thing
It's a megacity, so maybe some kind of sky scrapper that once served as a symbol of hope for the city, now just a looming shadow over everyone.

>Quagmire
Maybe there's just a huge chunk of the city missing, like a huge cave in with the subway tunnels leading to a canyon of sorts that everyone needs to slowly go around. Whatever works for a city.

>Battlefield
Military vs civilians before everything went to Hell. Maybe the bilkers were the first ones in that conflict and got dibs on a lot of the good weapons left behind.

>Road Warriors: The wasteland is almost uniformly lawless violent place where the powerful prey on the poor and the strong abuse the weak. There are those few tenacious souls who seek to better the world though. Fearless and skilled by necessity, these Road Warriors usually travel the ruined highways alone, dealing with those they see as wrong doers with whatever justice they see fit, but occasionally they form groups. Coalitions of these apocalyptic lawmen are dangerous and untrusted by other groups, if only because they can often lead to quick destruction of the status quo.

Well, seems like we might have a counterpoint to the "villains" of the setting.

>>53969590

Y'know, we could have the Tombstones (or whatever we call the bikers) could be native to the battlefield.

Anyway, more rolling. This time for leadership style.
>>
>>53969536
>Very tall thing

The Liberty Tower once stood for everything that is the U S of A. Showing the godless Communists across the ocean what this great nation is capable of even in times of a cold war, it was built of the toughest materials American industry and science could produce, it could withstand even an atomic blast.

At least, it would have. The bombs fell before construction was finished. Now the charred husk stands tall, having failed to protect the inhabitants it never had. A symbol for everything that went wrong.

They may have a close knit inner circle, but they always rule with absolute power when it comes down to it.

You both rolled stuff from the previous faction.

I'll keep distinctive icon though, because it's the most versatile. So we have.

>Motor Worship: In a world of vast blasted wastes and monstrous hazards, access to vehicles is the dividing line between life and death for most. Some take this a step farther and literally worship their rides as tools of divine salvation. Maybe they revere them like holy animals, wear garb that evokes them, or even take violent offense to those who mistreat them.

And

>Distinctive Icon: A motif or symbol runs throughout the groups structures, clothes, and vehicles. Maybe it’s a specific animal or object, or maybe it’s something less specific like bullets or flames.

Now give me two rolls for what they look like.

>>
>>53969857
I'd say they worship Police Vehicles, and every other vehicles they may appropriate they also try and paint up like a cop car.

As for distinctive icon... Police badge? To be forced to hand in one's badge by the Chief is the greatest shame they could suffer.
>>
>>53969883
I've been keeping it to two to avoid potential overlap between groups.

>War Paint: When they go to battle, these people paint themselves, and maybe even their rides, in a distinctive style.

>Uniforms: Standardized appearance across the group and it’s leadership. Makes your group seem more cohesive, but can be hard to maintain.

Makes sense for cops to have uniforms. They probably paint themselves with whatever their symbol is. >>53969913 I like this idea of painting everything in cop colors, regardless of whether or not it was originally police related. Your guys' call though.

>>53970384

There's nothing saying their vehicles can't be black with police paint, that'd be menacing and these cops don't strike me as the sneaky type.
>>
>>53970384
>Chopper: Not the motorcycle kind, the group actually has a helicopter. Is it a jury rigged cargo vehicle? A long attack helicopter? A small squad of one man gyrocopters? It’s certainly a powerful addition to any group, even if it is a serious gas guzzler and requires special care.

Police helicopter. Makes sense. Also lets them project their domineering "We are the law" attitude with a flying searchlight and ability to repel into action.

Alright, I'll leave you guys to piece this together while I go get a slice of pizza. Be back in ten minutes to start on the next faction.
>>
>>53970412

They also intimidate enemies by barking orders to surrender at them through the helicopter's megaphone

Alternatively, the most 'officers' of the SWAT rappel directly on top of enemies
>>
>>53970523
Most elite officers*
>>
Okay. So we seem to have our next faction.

Maybe they are called "The force" ?

They have shit gear mostly revolvers, the occasional shotgun and close combat weapons. So they focus on coming close to the enemy with their classic cars so that the poleriders can climb onto the tombstone vehicles. The normal members paint their cars in police colours. When you become a detective/deputy you get this sweet black swat paint. Needles to say they have religious feelings for their cars. And they own the skies with their motherfucking police chopper.

They have a bunker like mainbase where the fertile women are. Their whole culture is a warped mix of missunderstood cop cliches and their harsh sense of apocalyptic justice. For instance everyone has a partner so that he can pick up your badge when you die. Only a warrior with a badge can go on patrol (leave the base). Also you have to show an enemy your badge and scream something about rights and lawyas otherwise you are a dishonourable coward not playing by the rules.
>>
Okay, to recap Faction 2
>Part lives: A little bit mutated, a little bit of cancer, but not half bad compared to others.

>Road Warriors: They're cops, basically.

>Dictatorship: The police chief, probably.

>Worship cars and have a distinctive icon, probably a badge

>War paint and uniforms: Police colors and police uniforms.

>Have women kept as breeding stock and live in a nuke-proof police garage

>Their gear is pretty ramshackle and bad.

>Drive around classic muscle cars and trucks

>Use polecats to get onto enemy vehicles, and their elite drivers use SWAT black cars

>They have an attack helicopter.

There is a flooded part of the city, yes?

Perhaps it's flooded because a still drinkable underground reservoir bubbles up to the surface there, and this mercenary faction controls it. Their mercenary nature is twofold: whoever pays, they're willing to fight for, and whoever pays, they take water to in great armored convoys.

Well at this point every faction controls a ressource everyone else badly needs.

So in the end everyone depends on everyone.

Maybe we roll 2 other mad over the top factions controlling a ressource the other party needs.

Warfare is actually highly ritualized with a lot of rules. Its not total warfare but instead a very bloody and ongoing wargame. Its more about hostages and capturing enemy rigs so that you can get more ressources. Sure alot of people die but you don't annihilate each other.

Its really a hell for the normal people living in between who have nothing to offer and who aren't a aprty of a fucking crazy warrior cult.

>Xenophobic and Oldworld Blues: Have a bizarre obsession with Grecian caricatures and sports teams. They don't really like all the "dweebs" and "fags" who don't follow their creed.
>They wear gasmasks and paint themselves in the colors of their team.
>They have a monopoly on fresh water in most of the city, and use that as leverage.
>Their equipment isn't great quality though, mostly sports gear and homemade.
>Drive souped up speedy cars with lances and harpoons.

Just roll a d100 please.
>>
>>53972541
Fuck it. I'm just gonna say
>Well-crafted: Just because it was made in the post apocalypse, doesn’t mean it isn’t good. Well made armor, guns are machined with actual technique and thought, and houses/clothes are a little more respectably made.

Because I don't want to re-roll anymore. Alright? Alright.

Moving forward.

Please give me 1d100 for their motorpool, which is a section we've been having a lot more luck than others.

>Classics: Muscle Cars, roadsters, and trucks. The standard rides for most in the wasteland. Tough, reliable, and intimidating.

This is fine, because it's supposed to be normal. Now, continuing moving forward.

Another 2d100
>>
Aaaahhhh
I was the summary guy who wrote up the general outlines of the first two factions. I disappeared for awhile, so did anyone else take up my duty of summarizing how many other factions were made?

>Turbo-Charged: Engines are supercharged and often fitted with nitrous. The group's cars will be capable of incredible bursts of speed, at the cost of some special maintenance and materials.

And

>De-Construction Equipment: Cars are mounted with buzzsaws, mini-excavators, and plows for wrecking enemy vehicles.

>>53972693
I did it for one.

>>53972725
We did. It's a bunch of jocks who worship their old sports team, which was Greek themed, so they pretend they're Spartans but don't really know what any of it means. They control water and keep it mostly in a water filled stadium.

Give me one final roll for legendary vehicle and then I'm off because I really have to get to work.

I´m sorry, but with the big cars, the spikes and the jewelry, I see a group of classic metalheads. The concert on wheels fits just too well.
>>
>>53972693
time for a quick rundown
>Tombstones
Mutant biker raiders and descendants of conscripts who worship classic rock n roll and blues idols like Johnny Cash, with a large stash of military grade weapons. Hold a lot of influence in the wasteland selling scrap and spreading their weird death cult.

>The Force
Ridiculed as "The Fuzz" by some other factions, they take most of their inspiration from old 80s cop flicks, trying to enforce DUH LAW upon the wasteland. Like Judge Dredd meets Dirty Harry meets the first Mad Max. Make heavy use of melee weapons and heavy armour, are holed up out of an old police station and have a boner for cars. They also have an old police helicopter that their "chief" and his gang use to rappel into places SWAT style.

>The Spartans
Fucking crazy mercenaries, dressed up in gas masks and scavanged armour made from metal and sports gear. They live to go fast, stab people and to make things explode. Known for their reckless driving style and quite unpopular with the other factions for basically being high school jocks who huff paint. Use a lot of spears, explosives and shield walls. Only really tolerated because the control the largest water supply in the city. Ride around on a war rig made out of a giant bus, filled to the brim with psychos throwing "greek fire" and stabbing anybody who gets too close with spears and makeshift blunderbuss bayonets.

>As yet unnamed fourth faction
Cannibalistic mutant raiders, decked out in spikes, bling and tattoos. Control a lot of the power going in and out of the wastes, using it to supercharge the vehicles and power all the batshit crazy buzz-saws and choppy bitz they strap onto them.

Not really on the same level, but I've been working a bit on this guy from the first group.
The stuff on his head and neck are boils or tumors or something, the stuff on his belt is canned food, like beans and soup.
He's got a can of peaches he's saving for a special occasion.
