Need some art for a campaign, but feel free to toss out ideas too. Anything surreal, weird, or creepy that could fit into a modern setting.

>>53501636
oooh darling you've knocked at the right door.

Cthulhu/WoD ambiance DM here, I'll dump some art with some story threads.

>Phantom of the Opera
>The tale of the red curtains
>At night, after the big show is finished and the croud has left, the red curtains often move without anyone touching them
>The most experienced employees and crew members now not to stay too long after dark but new ones might get curious
>If you get close enough to the moving curtains, they suddenly fold into pic related, leaving a gap that reveals a surreal human face with glowing eyes that sings with and angelic voice
>If the person keeps approaching, he will eventually get swallowed byt the heavy curtains, never to be seen again

>The Gravedigger
>There are always a lot of stories from huge cities, about ghosts and people disappearing, but none is most tangible than the one of the Gravedigger
>People say they have seen, within the graveyards of the city, a man that looks like pic related, with a ridiculously long nosed mask and a shovel.
>He reportedly digs tombs. At first people thought he dug up corpses but then they realized he just digs holes in the ground were there are no bodies and disappears in darkness when approached
>The police did not think much of him at first, just a vandal with a twisted sense of humour but they soon became aware that there was always a rose left in the graves
>the rose, odly enough, didn't wither immediately even when not put in water but only at precise dates
>each and every one of them precisely the day the person that was going to be buried in the corresponding tomb died.

>The Photographer
>She old and she's nice, excentric and a bit too loud, she likes to dress fashionably and to talk like young people in a sarcastic way.
>Her neighbours love her because she's helpful and a lot of fun to talk with. They know she's an artist and has been around for a pretty long time even if she often talks about how she was young in Paris when she became a fashion photographer.
>What they don't know is that sometimes when they're away, she invites a young, naive model in her home to take pictures and takes out her old camera
>Very old camera, beyond vintage, says she gets out a lot more emotions through this old lens than every digital machine she's heard of.
>From the moment the click is heard, they are not seen again, trapped in the photo were they age until they die, alone, the old lady stealing a few more years of life and health.

A creature that steals the voices of its victims. Can talk in coherent sentences, but as it speaks, you notice that it builds its sentences in fragments of different voices with different pitch and emotion behind. The voices can be male, female, young, old, accented or not. It can employ these voices to trick or lure people.

Anyway, this is essentially ripped straight from the Black Company, but Soulcatcher is fucking awesome.

>The Bird Catcher
>In a country town, she is the town's crazy old lady. She likes her husband's old shotgun, she misses an eye and lets her white hair grow longer and longer each year.
>She farms her own land and is grumpy as hell
>Sometimes she offers help to her neighbours or just help people without asking but they often never hear more than a few words from her
>The reason why she's considered crazy is she doesn't have any scarecrows or ways to repulse birds... but they never seem to come and eat her seeds.
>Instead they often hang out on her roof, her fences, as if they were waiting for something
>A boy in town pretends that one night he went to her house because he was lost and broke his bike wheel and saw her in her field, surrounded by birds and carrying her shotgun
>She was aiming at something, something huge and so dark it seemed like it absorbed light all together and it growled in such a terrifying way that the boy ran as he heard birds screeching and the shotgun firing.
>Everything seemed normal the day after and since then nobody wants to go near her farm at night.

Kind of a Reluctant Vampire type? I can dig it.

>>
>>53501891
Reminds me a bit of the assassins from Neverwhere... always loved the descriptions gaiman did of them, something about them wearing suits that were like "something made by a person who had never seen a suit, but only had one described to them". Something that's just can't-quite-put-my-finger-on-it "wrong". Sorta a character version of the old lovecraft "non-euclidean geometry" trope.

I've never seen it executed well in a visual medium, though.

Not too long ago there was a pretty good thread about dangerous lost places and unreal spaces in which the setting's Men in Black / Delta Green equivalent was actually a clandestine branch of the Department of Transportation. Since then, I've wanted to include them in a game of mine because of the way they were characterized as a group of perpetually understaffed and underfunded everymen doing their best to protect people from things even they don't understand.

An alien in the alien equivalent of a spacesuit to maintain the unearthly environment it needs to survive.

Possibly the "mustard gas poisoning" was the result of a suit leak.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatwoods_monster
>After encountering the creature, several members of the September 12 group reported suffering from similar symptoms, which persisted for some time and which they attributed to having been exposed to the mist emitted by the creature. The symptoms included irritation of the nose and swelling of the throat. Lemon suffered from vomiting and convulsions throughout the night, and had difficulties with his throat for several weeks afterward. A doctor who treated several of the witnesses is reported to have described their symptoms as being similar to victims of mustard gas, though such symptoms are also commonly found in sufferers of hysteria, which can be brought on by exposure to a traumatic or shocking event.

>The Masks
>They are always here when the carnival arrives, always dressed in red and black with white masks that cover their entire face.
>They are always quiet in the middle of the crowd and dance with whomever invites them with a chuckle and what seems to be a smile.
>They are always partying, enjoying eacha dn every moment of this vert special day
>Because after that day they begin to starve again for the rest of the year and their vow not to eat human flesh is unbreakable.

(For those who don't know carnival traditionally happens just before Lent, when most food is banned for a time.)

>The Nun
>You wake up, you feel dizzy and can't remember why or how you fell asleep or what you were doing before.
>You're tied up to a chair but not gagged or blind so your eyes start to get used to the dark. You feel a sharp pain in your ear.
>She's there, smoking with her robes and Rangers on, looking at you with the face of someone who's seen things from nightmares climb out of people's mind.
>When she sees you're awake she brings you water so you can speak, because right now all you can gargle are pathetic mumbles.
>You drink up, the water is icy cold. Your ear hurts more and more and you feel the urgent need to get out of here.
>You start asking questions, panicked, what have you done, who is she, why did she kidnap you.
>The only answer she gives is "It's not you I've taken. It's what inhabits you."
>It's at that moment that you see a thin volute of black smoke that seems to darken your vision. It twists inside your eye as it had felt your conscience of it.
>"I'm sorry but there's only one way of getting it out."
>She takes out a flask marqued with a silver cross and dips a needle inside it.
>Inside your head you hear a voice, as familiar as your mother's, screaming in panic as it did in wrath, greed or envy for so many years.

>The Body
>You were drowning. Dying. A strong hand got you out of the water. Wrapped you up in a blanket and lit a fire.
>You could not realize what he was for a time. But soon enough you understood the stench of dead human flesh.
>It took you to a shed and fed you. A lot. And it's only when you saw at the end of the day ten other corpses coming back 'home' and what appeared to be human outside the window, packed in a paddock that you got how they replaced the flesh that started rotting too much.

I had a dream about something like this. There was this cyberpunk city like Bladerunner. Giant megacorporations and that. And there was this hard boiled detective guy.

He started investigating this disappearance for some dame and starts encountering all this weird shit. People saying cryptic stuff or going insane, things not moving like they should, shadows being cast with no light source. He started encountering people and animals with weird deformities and he fought them off, finding that he was stronger and faster than he should be, could do things he shouldn't be able to do, knows things he shouldn't know. He's changing, gaining weird powers. Time and space bend to hi needs, but only a little. he can jump back or rewind and try things again, stretch space like taffy, that sort of thing.

Turns out his medical examiner contact was in on whatever was going on. He explains that his office was infested by a nest "makai wasps" (whatever that means) that came from another world (or possibly between worlds) and gathered weird energy from all over the city, exposure to which had caused him to gain his powers and start to lose his humanity. Then detective had to fight him He shot him, but he wouldn't die. The m.e. transformed into a huge, flesh, serpentine creature, a bit like Tetsuo, but much more reptilian or piscine. It swallowed him and he had to fight his way out of its body. After, he found was starting to mutate himself from using the power so much. Then I woke up.

I'm probably making it sound like it made more sense than it did. It was weird.

Yeah I was gonna say you could look into Beksinski he did a lot of cool things.

Alternatively you could look into finding some SCP's that work - there are enough of them that even if your players know SCP's you could find some obscure enough to work, although that's more for ideas than art.

Unsure if it would warrent it's own thread, so I'll ask here for the time being. I'm working on routes for my players to follow in a one piece campaign, and one of the islands about midway through I was planning to make as a sort of Cabin in the Woods, horror campaign. My two main questions are this, suggestions / tips / advice on how to run it and actually make it scary, and how to make it actually scary when you have the chance of players being able to punch earthquakes or turn into molten lava. The campaign hasn't started so I have no idea what their movesets will be, but I figured it would be good to ask and get my ideas on paper before we start.

I have a small favour to ask of you, teegee:
I'm trying to design a local boogeyman for a story. It's set in costal southern england. The setting is softly futuristic, 15 years into the future type thing. Right now, I just have a goatman expy, which is deeply inappropriate and I know it.. What do you think would work better?
>>
A comedian that gives out groucho marx glasses, but THE GLASSES DON'T COME OFF!!!
>>
>>53560309
>coastal
>England
I can see why a Goatman wouldn't fit. You can be cheap and go Fishman. Alternately water or muck based if you are trying to -man it. Alternately, steal from local mythology and simplify it.

Is this going to be a combat bogeyman or a story tool?
>>
>>53560825
A story tool, for bored teens to freak each other out.

Despite the local fishing industry collapsed due to overfishing, there could possibly be a Fisherman type being who drags you in his net back into the sea or has anglerfish like lure.

There are also some woods near the town the story is set in, and there's a Spooky Place that nobody ever visits voluntarily.

A followup question i, what do you think makes a good, effective boogeyman?
>>
>>53560011
I was totally shocked when I found out Mimic had not one but two sequels.
>>
>>53560935
for something more obscure, use the Black Flash of Provincetown
http://newenglandfolklore.blogspot.com/2009/08/black-flash-of-provincetown.html
Similar to Spring-Heeled Jack, a local demon/monster/boogyman that molests and scares townspeople, his description varies but most generally he is exceptionally tall (~8 ft), cloaked in black, and has glowing eyes. He is supernaturally strong and can leap tremendous heights easily, much to his advantage when running from pursuers. The blog post doesn't mention it but some of the versions I've seen also include long silver ears/antenna, a cage/colander obscuring his head/face (probably from the sources that believe it to be a very nonsupernatural prankster), and a touch so cold it can give you frostbite, would also tie in to his supposed weakness to heat/hot water.
>>
>>53556616
Null power zones can be used to make players feel vulnerable. Just support creative thinking and ingenuity.

> a selkie who were abused by an unkind man. So she waited his child grew to seven, then she drowned him before disappearing. She now hunt the shore, seducing childen and man alike to drown them. It can work with any mermaid/fishgal.

> In Brittany, you have the kannerezed-noz (litterally the night laundress), who are the souls of women that killed their own child. You could have a britton who imprisonned one, and to get rid of her, he drop her on Albion.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Lavandi%C3%A8res

>Drac, Kelpie, or other creepy beast who want to drown people to eat them or for shit and giggle.

>a Dead Coaches, who goes very fast on the road at night and cause accidents, trample those who stand in his way, only to stop to let those who will die on...

I always like Rawhead and Bloody Bones. Coincidentally, they're both in the newest Pathfinder Bestiary. I'm glad that Pathfinder is interested in mining such an array of stuff for monsters. Whatever the game's shortcomings, I think it's good that it's raising the profiles of cool monsters and folklore and whatnot. If nothing else, it might inspire some people to learn more.

>>
>>53556616
>Cabin in the Woods
How come it doesn't have an official tabletop RPG yet? It such an obviously gamey idea, and more suited to tabletops than vidya, which is a bit rare these days.

>>
>>53566555
*to a world straight out
>>
>>53566513
Ehh I think it would make a much better board game than tabletop.
>>
>>53566555
It's an out of left field idea, so let me flesh it out just a little. You do not face any bogeyman, but the environment itself becomes your enemy. You have to worry about making the wrong step and falling into a portal. The first time you do, the exit is near, but most times you won't be so lucky. On the other side of the portals is a world where an apocalyptic event like a nuclear war happened. Each portal leads to a different location in that world and a different time: before, during, and after the apocalypse. The "during" journeys are where you must think on your feet before something really bad happens. The "after" is all about scavenging, environmental dangers like radiation, and violence from the survivors. The "before" gives you the backstory. The portals can generally be only used once. Find a reason why the players can't just leave the area with the portals or actively need to use them because they're looking for something on the other side.

The most important part is the mystery of the bogeyman. Parallel and conflicting information is a solid tool at your disposal. Different townsfolk have different stories. Explanations for abnormal phenomena. But usually there is some variety of common thread.

And running a game you can also be inconsistent with your descriptions. Never give it all away. I normally hold something back. In this case, I'd give the town 2-3 bogeymen who are all attributed to being the same entity. Perhaps they all tend to snatch people who are alone at night. Or they have overlapping territories.

Now, defenitely never tell the players that they are dealing with multiple creatures they can't actually fight against. But make it one semi-morphous creature in their minds.

Also, make sure someone in town is convinced it's aliens.

No need for threats like radiation or a post apocalyptic wasteland of a world. Just have the world be empty aside from the victim who stumbled into the portal. It looks like the real world, if at the exact time the victim passed through the portal, everything alive vanished.

There is a Japanese ghost called the Slit-Mouthed Woman (Kuchisake-onna) that looks like a beautiful woman wearing a disposable surgical mask (which is quite common in Asia; it's actually considered impolite NOT to wear one if you're sick).
>The woman will ask a potential victim "Am I Pretty?" If they answer no, she will kill them with a pair of scissors, which she carries in her pocket. If they answer yes, she will pull away the mask, revealing that her mouth is slit from ear to ear, and ask, "How about now?" If they answer no, she will cut her unfortunate victim in half. If the person answers yes, then she will slit his or her mouth so it resembles her mouth. It is impossible to run away from her, as she will simply reappear in front of the victim.
>When the legend reappeared in the 1970s, rumors of ways to escape also emerged. Some sources say she can also be confused by the victim answering her question with ambiguous answers, such as "You are average" or "So-so". Another method is to flip her questions towards her, such as asking her "Do you think I'm pretty?" Unsure of what to do, she will give a person enough time to escape while she is lost in thought. Another escape route is to tell her one has a previous engagement; she will pardon her manners and excuse herself. In some variations of the tale, she can be distracted by fruit or candies thrown at her which she will then pick up, thus giving the victim a chance to run.

Also, there is a youkai called the Shirime which takes the form of a naked man with a large eyeball where his anus should be. It likes to bend over, spread its cheeks, and show the eyeball to people.
