>Your PCs are all regular, ordinary folk riding the subway late one night, trying to get home.

>One by one, each character fell asleep, missing not only their stop, but every stop.

>By the time they wake up, they discover that they and their train have been left abandoned.

>They know they have to fin their way upward, and they know they have to stick together.

>What they don't know is just how far down they really are, or what is down there with them.

What do your PCs find beneath the city streets, in the secret places deep underground?

Also theyy will be like totally in flavour

>The PCs find evidence of others getting lost before them.

>Something begins stalking the PCs through the tunnels.

>The PCs begin tracking something through the tunnels.

>The PCs lose a member of their party in the tunnel.

>The PCs gain a new party member in the tunnels.

There's a tribal society in Metro 2034 that believe the tunnels were dug out by giant worms. They worship said worms and also sacrifice people to them. The leader of the tribe was able to practice a form of hypnosis.

I'm trying to remember the name of a short story I read about a guy who accidentally crossed into another dimension on a subway, and when he tried to get back to our reality, he ended up in yet another reality, and realized he was probably never getting back to Earth.

I think it might have been a Stephen King short. Anybody know what I'm talking about?

I've read a lot of Steven King and it's not ringing any bells. Clive Barker maybe?

I remember a great bit for this someone came up with like a year ago.

Every other terminal they come across a shop. It's in one of those enclosed boxes here the shopkeeper talks through a speaker embedded in the shatter proof glass of it's front. They have all kinds of ares from snack food to radios that pick up weird signals, big old #1 foam fingers and air horns, maps of the immediate area but no further than the next terminal, to guns and ammo but are always cagey about why they stock it.

The shopkeeper is always the same individual.

Whenever the players arrive the shopkeeper is always "a few minutes to closing time" so they have to rush there purchases. After a time set buy the DM the shopkeep says all purchases are final, thanks for your business then pulls metal blinders don over the window.

Players never see the shopkeep leave.

If they some how get in or manage to peek in they find it empty, shelves and ground lined with dust and the light bulb burnt out.
>>
When the players finally find a tube station map, they find it has a completely different layout to what it normally has. The stations are smudged and unreadable, but a low level knowledge/science/healing check will let the player notice that the map is now in the shape of a brain, with the players station apparebtly being somewhere in the subcortex, where the subconcious lives.
>>
>As the PCs continue to explore the tunnel system beneath the city, they discover evidence of others who have gotten lost down there in the dark.

>Abandoned backpacks and shed clothing, makeshift campsites and hidden boltholes, graffitied warnings and long-unread goodbye letters.

>Three separate characters slowly begin to emerge: a frihtened college-aged girl, a graffiti-artist and a homeless vet turned survivalist.

>Each one leaves different clues as to what might be happening in the underground and how the PCs might escape that are worryingly contradictory.
>>
Every so often the players come across an old emergency phone in the tunnels, on which they can get a hold of a subway maintenance worker that can give them a little intel and direction as they try to escape the underground. However, this friend on the phone is:

>Just a regular Joe who is totally out past his depth with this spooky stuff.

>A hallucination experienced only by the one player who picks up the phone.

>Some sort of evil entity purposefully trying to confuse and mislead them.

>Lost deep down in the underground just as badly as the players are too.

>The father of another lost girl who really only cares about her safe return.

As the players are following one of the many tunnels, they realise the style of the tunnel is changing. The cement walls are giving way to elegant marble. The floor becomes flagstones, and then mosaics. Soon it becomes obvious to everyone that the tunnel has essentially become ancient roman in design.

And that's when they find the exit. It's roman themed, with the turnstyles made of elaborate metalwork, and the signs being written in Latin. Even the coinslots indicate they are for denarii. Past these gates, one can see the sun shining down a staircase leaning up. The area seems deserted.

On the wall near these turnstyles, daubed in grafitti:
>DON'T JUMP THE TURNSTYLES, WHATEVER YOU DO.
>No, do it!
>Are you kidding? I saw the 'security guard"!
>Allright guys, I'm gonna jump it. If I make it over ok, I'll come back and write something.

There is nothing written underneath.

No, that's the creepypasta that someone who had read the original story ripped off.

In the original story, the "people" he first encountered looked like monsters but didn't seem to pay attention to him, or at least didn't care that he didn't look like them. I read that creepypasta looking for the real story yesterday.

There can still be creepy-cozy aspects to a surreal subway story, but the PCs are still going to want to escape to the life they'd known before they got spirited away. Think of the subway sort of like an underground, urban Tir-Na-Nog.

Maybe we should inject a bit of cozy into it then:

>There is a whole society of people living in the tunnels with its own history, art and culture. None among hem have been to the surface in about 40 years and all are politely skeptical of how the PCs describe it.

>One large, domed chamber is covered from top to bottom in graffiti that shines softly and strangely in the darkness. The longer the PCs state at it, the more sure they become that the graffiti is shifting and swirling slowly.

>In various abandoned stations and maintenance rooms, someone has posed groups of department store mannequins and props into dioramas. Some are fanciful and some are funny, but all are a bit off.

>The lighting in one particularly narrow stretch of tunnel is on the blink, regularly throwing the PCs into pitch darkness. Each time the lights come back on, they find that their marching order in line has been rearranged.

>An eternal rave seems to have taken over one old subway station, and always seems to be in full-swing whenever the PCs visit. When asked how to get out of the tunnels, no one seems sober or cojent enough to answer.
>>

>An area of utility tunnels is inhabited by a small group of drunk frat bros. They say they were locked in the university's steam tunnels over the weekend as part of a hazing ritual to join the Upsilon Upsilons.
>They're too drunk to remember where the exit is, and will always insist that they've only been down here for a day or so.
>They seem to have a near-unlimited supply of cheap beer. Every time you turn around, you'll see someone cracking open a 24-pack, or rolling out another keg.
>Some nearby areas of the tunnels are completely walled-in by massive piles of empty beer cans and bottles.

>A working Roman bath, complete with a large central public bathing area, frigidarii, tepidarii, caladarii, saunas, and attendants offering towels and oil massages. The changing rooms even include togas for the more-modest bathers to wear in the public baths. And the dirty tunnel denizens who use the baths add an authentic ancient feel.
>Nobody can agree on the origin of the baths. Some people say that it's the remains of a roman-themed public pool from the late 1800s. Others claim that it used to be a gay bathhouse, built anywhere between the 1910s and 1980s. Some claim that it truly is a 2000-year-old Roman ruin, although the masonry doesn't quite look *that* old...
>The baths are run by a fat 70-something Italian guy who is always dressed in a purple toga. He is sometimes seen reciting songs and poetry in fluent Latin (well, it *sounds* pretty fluent).

Anomalous wrecks and ruins of all sorts can be found buried deep beneath the streets, having been tunneled to and co-opted by the people who have taken to living down in the city's subways and sewers. No one knows what the oldest, deepest ruin might be, but many believe it may be responsible for all the rest.

You find yourself on an empty subway platform. You notice a staircase leading down. You follow it to another sub-level., another, more dusty and more empty platform. You go further down. How many sub-levels can there be? You think this is the twentieth... or thirtieth. The staircase turns more and more old, dilapidated. Tiles get replaced by bare cement walls, cathode lights by sets of lightbulbs. What gets you concerned the most is that graffiti stopped a couple levels up. Several levels down even the cement disappears. Walls and stairs themselves seem chiseled out of stone. Thick black wire connects solitary, buzzing lighbulbs. The staircase is getting narrower, until only one person could fit. Instead of zig-zagging flights of stairs with clear landings you get a claustrophobic spiral staircase, winding ever downward counterclockwise.
Is it getting hot in here?
>>
>>53379464
Lightbulbs stop and so do you. It's more like a tunnel than any staircase now. Shadows quickly turn into pitch-black darkness and you obviously won't even consider going further. You curse the curiosity that lead you here, stupidly telling you to try go just a couple more steps down. You hear your breath in the hot humid air of this place. Beyond that - drops of water hitting some larger pool further in the darkness. And something else. An echo? Echo of faint footsteps, coming from down below. Some... one?... is coming. You've been heard.

If one pays close attention to the magazines and newspapers left scattered about, they find that they often reference "current events" from the distant past, or more rarely events that never took place entirely. Allusions to "the event" are often made, but the writers seem to actively avoid speaking about it directly.

There is a librarian deep into one of the substations that is attempting to piece together the fragmented news and bits of history to attempt to work out "where things went wrong". He pays handsomely for new texts, but not necessarily in money. Or at least not in any money you recognise.

You've been working your way through some old machine rooms when you start to hear music and muffled conversation. Rounding a corner you find yourself in a bar full of hipsters. Lots of furniture made from pallets and people in strange clothes. Talking to the people there you find out that its the opening party for an art performance art show. You have travelled down to the deepest parts of the underground rails. This is an old project, construction that dates to just after the turn of the last century. These were not intended to be normal rails but rather a private system for the richest and most powerful's own use, made with the height of technology at the time and sparing no creature comforts. A separate arterial system connecting the most important, affluent parts of the city: veins pumping the money where it needs to go. The archetecture has a distinctive gothic flair, every tunnel having an arched, tiled ceiling designed like some ancient cathedral. Bas-relief statues rest in alcoves set at intervals along every passage, some of histories familiar faces but given godlike proportions: captains of industry remade as marble deities.

It is difficult to see why the lines never opened. The construction seems complete, rails are laid, even trains sit idle, ready, their interiors old but resplendent. Plush red velvet curtains, pillowy seats, now ravaged by time, thick with coated dust. The handrails flake gold foil at the merest touch exposing worn metal with the patina of ages weighing heavily upon them. Occasionally you hear a rumble, vibrations in the stonework as trains run along active rails. Although it is impossible to be certain, the mind prone playing tricks on itself this far down, it seems as if some of the trains are running BENEATH you. But that would be impossible. All records indicate this is the utmost depth of man's delving beneath the city.

All this splendor around you abandoned to the ravages of time. It's hard to imagine all of this has passed the attention of looters or squatters.

Wonder City. A city beneath Gotham City. Constructed in the 19th Century it had storefronts, housing, libraries; all the amenities of civilization but expanded with super science made available by the wondrous Lazarus Pit at the heart of its construction. Pity about the long term effects of Lazarus driving the citizens to madness, the entire city erupting into a debased orgy of violence and mayhem until it was sealed off, all the residents who survived dragged off to Arkham Asylum. And Wonder City itself was largely forgotten.

Graffiti can be fun, especially if it starts as simple tagging but changes as you move deeper into a location, the messages becoming paranoid, then frantic, then cryptically referring to some kind of threat until finally you come across an area that looks like someone used an awful lot of dark red paint splashed all over the walls and floor. Spray cans are strewn about the place. Some of them appear to have been punctured by something long and thin with tremendous force behind it.

>>

Maybe combine these. Rich bastards funding an underground works for themselves complete complete with church, an underground club (the rich men's variety, not the girly dance kind since naturally No Womankind Allowed) their own little world tucked far from the prying eyes of the little people, accessible from their private rails.

Built, of course, by common laborers living in underground camps to speed the lengthy construction. In the ways of such men many of them brought their wives and girlfriends, even ladies of comfort and illest repute. At some point their is a labor dispute that escalates into open revolt. These men end up occupying the opulent structures they built with their own toil. Even the Pinkertons prove insufficient to dislodge them since even the most mercenary thug finds himself ill-prepared to deal with men covered in dark grease to blend into the shadows, in territory they know because they laid it brick by brick, slipping out of the darkness and burying a mattock in your skull.

So if you're a rich bastard who figures the whole affair is spoiled, probably way too much blood on the carpets by this point, you just cut your losses and seal the damn thing up. Claim there was some industrial accident. They'll die off soon enough... only somehow they don't. There's underground sources of water, hell, the problem is often keeping the tunnels dry. Rats are plentiful. They can grow potatoes, at least, and maybe a few other vegetables under certain conditions.

Yeah, you could probably have a divergent breed of hideously inbred mutant molemen living under palacelike conditions, even going to church. Could be fun.

>No, just massively bright lamps hanging from the sky blue vaulted ceiling.
>And those aren't exactly buildings like there used to be either. They're subway kiosks like newspaper or snack venders but built several stories tall (all the doors and stairs and shit are actually set up for people their size, the buildings are just styled after the kiosks and all their products are ones that would be found at them)
>There aren't roads anymore, just subway tracks as wide as a three lane road.

This isn't the surface, just another more massive subway styled after it. And there is a distant rumbling growing closer... Who knows how many dozens of miles away it might be? Who knows how big these trains must be?

Beyond the door things look normal enough but the deeper you go the more signs of struggles you see. Bullet casings litter the ground, bullet holes riddling the walls, but never any signs of bodies. Deeper still the manmade tunnels give way to rough, uneven stone passages that at first you think are natural until you realize something large and strung dug them. With claws, too, based on some of the gouges in the stone. A short ways inside you find old tools, pickaxes and shovels, even helmets, apparently dropped in a hurry. Still no bodies...

The discovery of an underground rocket test facility labelled Project Gatecrasher. Booster engines affixed to carts attached to railways are common enough but typically tested on long tracks across the desert. This, however, is on a much shorter track that, to your astonishment, terminates at a rock wall. The rock wall proves even more astonishing because it has a capsule partially lodged into the stone wall. Not embedded in the normal sense of a crash but somehow merged into the stone as if when it passed the stone were no more an obstacle than water. Inside the capsule you can find an astronaut with his lower body and partial torso on the righthand side embedded in stone. Opening the faceplate you are greeted by a skull.

Also, these glyphs were literally created by illiterate migrant workers. Why the fuck would a secret global super-science organization dedicated to storing and cataloging the supernatural use fucking pictograms? Is this supposed to be some part of a quadruple-redundant system in case they're fighting a meme SCP that infects all written english words?

Shittypasta aside, I think there might be some cool uses for hobo lore. Maybe an underground community of elderly hobos who rode the rails until they ran out of rail to ride? Or an anachronistic group of 1930s hobos who have been stuck underground for 80 years but haven't aged a day.

The Hobo code might also have some fun uses https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobo#Ethical_code

Are you really too stupid to think of a situation where communication might be cut? SCP explorers die or get stuck all the time, it makes perfect sense they would want to leave behind warnings for the next team to come in.

Also encrypted messages is legit retarded. What is the purpose of encrypting them? Are you gonna write the message in 50 languages in case they don't speak whichever one you do?

You see a bright light at the end of the tunnel. Crossing the threshold you find yourself walking along a forested path in a light drizzle. The air feels unusually warm and still.

This must be a park yet strangely you do not feel as if you've ascended enough to be back on the surface. It takes a few moments for your eyes to adjust to the brightness. You open a heavy door and emerge from the dirty trash-strewn passages into a nearly-spotless tunnel. The curved walls are decorated in a mid-century style, soft carpet lines the floor, and a few modest pieces of furniture sit against the wall. Apart from the curved walls of the tunnel, it looks very much like an office hallway. It's completely untouched by the normal damage of time, rodents, and vandals. As you take in the surroundings, you even notice the soft sounds of smooth jazz emitting from a small speaker embedded in the wall.

At the other end of the tunnel, an identical door opens into another room. The decor is the same, but now obviously decayed by many decades. Only a couple broken bits remain of the furniture. Graffiti covers most of the walls, but the most prominent letters take up almost half the height of the wall, and seem to have been painted with a wide paint roller.

>DONT GO BACK TO THE ROOM

Of course, there are a few replies scrawled next to it

A miniature train track runs across the floor of the tunnel. It exits a round mouse-sized hole on one side, and enters another hole on the other side. The hole on the right is lit by tiny yellow light bulbs, and when you peer inside, you can see a tiny model subway platform with tiny plastic people posed on the platform. Every few minutes, a miniature subway train passes through the tunnel and stops at the platform. When it leaves, the figures waiting on the platform seem to have been swapped with new ones. But the train blocks your view of the platform, so you can never see what's happening while the figures are switching.

It would be so easy to just reach out and grab a subway car as it zips past on the tiny tracks...

This stretch of narrow corridors is lined with complicated arrays of old electronics and computer equipment. The tunnels echo with the buzzing and humming of electrical current coursing through thick, old wires. Here and there, you can hear the clacking sounds of electromechanical relays. As you walk past the vintage equipment, an intercom buzzes to life and a pre-recorded voice plays.

>Maintenance required in corridor... D... Seven... One. Technician, please proceed to... Left.

Ahead of you, you notice a 4-way intersection in the tunnels, and a small flashing light on one of the panels in the left passageway. Was that light blinking before? Before you can ponder this further, the speaker buzzes again.

Remember: less is more.

hidden eldritch shit will seal the deal, dont throw in gibbering flesh monsters and, much to even my own dismay, murder hobos. Keep encounters sparse but absolutely terrifying, with no information revealed, as in stay away from gimics like "a darkness monster which cant go in the light."
>>
>>53403816
Clearly these are people for whom "kill it with fire" never crossed their minds.

And if they don't have the means to make fire then what the fuck are they doing hunting creepy shit for? You ALWAYS bring fire, dammit! That's been mankind's mantra since they invented the damn thing!
>>
>>53403932
but sooner or later the party HAS to figure out what their dealing with. the "big reveal" as it were. And at that moment the reveal has to be both satisfying given the build up, and transition nicely from being "creepy" fear of the unknown to "terrifying" knowing just how screwed you really are .

But you are right, less IS more, sparse encounters with no clear resolution and no additional information gleamed is good, keeps the players from building up confidence. Throw enough crazed hobos at them will either give them the sense of invincibility when they constantly beat them back, or they will be so on-guard that they are no longer surprised when violent shit happens.
>>
>>53403992
so what happens when the fire has no effect on the scary monster-thing? or "Killing it with fire" just makes it worse?
>>
>>53404029
Then clearly you didn't use enough fire, but if you're going to be a big baby about it then fine, use mankind's backups: sharp stick and pointy rock.

At any rate, in this scenario there's no reason it wouldn't work on their fallen comrade. If the brain is somehow still active enough despite death then burn it to ash. It's unlikely to still function.

That all of the crap the people are dealing with is actually due to God who is the DM of a game, the very game the players are playing and the characters are suffering through. When it is ultimately discovered that God, aka The DM, was asking 4chan for advice the characters have to convince the players to beat him to death with pool cues.
>>
>>53404163
That man is doubting the fire. He is clearly an anti-fire operative and must immediately be fired, with fire.
>>
>>53404086
>while still having that immense sense of scale about it.
It doesn't always HAVE to have a massive scale to it, it might just be the kind of thing that gets the players to say "We can't handle this thing".
>>
>>53404086
DESU, any "big reveal" you plan for a game has only about a 20% chance of actually making your players go "holy shit!" Unless you're running a totally-scripted game, it's very hard to pull off a climax perfectly with the right tone, pacing, etc.

I'm not saying you shouldn't try to do big scary reveals, but if you run a session with that as the goal, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

The city station is a phenomena occured only very rarely inside the labarynthine tunnels under the station. It initially appears as a standard train station platform, like one of the many that appear, seemingly organically through the tunnel network. This one is unusual in that the exit actually exists and doesn't simply lead further in. Using the exit takes the person out onto a street at night, but something will immeadiately seem off. No one's around. Everything is made of harsh concrete blocks. The stars in the sky have a strange sodium-yellow tint to them. And then it becomes clear. The whole city is still a part of the station. Roads are rail lines. The sky above is actually a distant ceiling, with lamps in place of stars. Buildings are shop fronts, with everything being made from reappropriated train station materials, like someone tried to make a city with only a limited number of object "types". It is best to turn back at this point, as going into any subway entrance but the one you came up from is likely to lead you in confusing circles, to trap you in the city. And if you find anyone else in the city besides yourself, do not help them, do not anger them, and definitely do not lead them to the station you came in through.

I like to think of massive scale more as the way something carries itself. Or how the world reacts. A barefoot man in a pristene three-piece suit but oil is dripping on and off all over his skin. This is unsettling but seems small.

But instead of making him just oily, maybe trickles of oil are spouting from walls and the ground and the ceiling and lights and it is all being drawn toward this man. And when he speaks to you the oil also listens and trembles, almost like when you run a strong magnetic field theough ferric liquids.

Giving a character an external force to their actions makes them more grand. A ripple in a cup of water that precedes a T-Rex makes the appearance of said T-Rex more powerful.

I love the idea of finding secret cold war bunkers for the mega rich to survive nuclear holocaust. One of the players is hurt by an accident and it turns out the place is still staffed with super friendly people who take the players in for treatment.

Turns out that the place is being renovated for a projected end of the world scenario where overpopulation, climate change, and the resulting floods, droughts, disruption to food supplies - and the resulting violence as the poor and unfortunates who can't afford the new prices tear societies apart.

Oh, and it turns out they really don't want anyone to know about their secret luxurious bunker and so they're planning on killing you! In fact the "accident" was an early attempt to kill you but only injured one player.

GOOD LUCK!

You can do a variation on this one where it turns out that the richie riches jumped the gun say back during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Someone thought this was the end and caught all radio contact with the surface to spare them the horrors of everyone dying above them. Their plans were to wait for the radiation to drop and then arise to the surface as kings of the mutants with their money and technology! Truly gods among the misshapen mortals they assumed they'd find.

Bonus points if it turns out their sensors are still showing dangerous levels of radiation because they built their bunker above a future Superfund Site and they're just reading toxic waste.

I guess it's a bit Bioshock. I suppose you could do things where they have scientists too trying to alter their genetics to make them hardier and superior to survive the assumed nuclear wasteland above only they've been driven insane or whatever. I mean you could if you wanted to.

The real joke is that the use of CBRN makes it not current (as CBRNe has been the term for over a decade) but not super old (as CBRN replaced NBC when dirty bombs became a thing post-Cold War) and that basically gives it a pretty short timeframe that this sign would be from.
>>
>>53414441
I more like a different concept. When its some futuristic post-apo setting, where sure, there are secret underground facilities, but they are all high tech and stuff.

And then you stumble into some Cold War remnant that has been decomissioned in early 80s. Kind of that moment when John Connor storms the bunker in T3 and with each step realise he's basically inside a fucking museum, with everything inside being older than he's himself. "Behold, imbeciles, and cower before the might of our...CORDLESS PHONES!"
"Hey, fuck you, jackhole! I'm trying to listen to my iPod!"
".......... Dear GOD listen to how their language has devolved into gibberish!"

It's still possible to make it a game if it turns out the rich dbags also stockpiled some nukes they bought off some corrupt generals in case they discovered the Ruskies needed a bit more thrashing so the true Ameican yuppie could unopposed rule as God intended. When they discover there was no nuclear war they decide to kickstart it themselves. Extreme bonus points if after the players thwart their ill-conceived schemes it turns out they were planning of of really old maps and their targets in the USSR turned out to be poor little Moldova. Horrific but hardly likely to cause the Russians to retaliate with WWIII.

I personally preferred haunted otherworlds. As the players descend they find the place a twisted hellscape, like a prison or lunatic asylum only the inmates are running it. Despite knowing the way back when they climb back up the stairs they end up on another layer and another no matter how far they climb, unable to reach the surface and safety.

Until they solve the mystery, or die trying, looks like they're the inmates too.

Disturbing to be certain but the warmth is a welcome change from those cold tunnels and that low heartbeat like pulse is oddly soothing.

I like it but I'd make it more than a room. Also give it weird denizens, skinless humanoids that communicate in weird chittering voices and who move among the fleshy architecture, occasionally giving it a loving stroke while cooing soothingly.

Nearby there are human bodies like pic related. Next to each is piled clothing that indicates they were normal commuters. Their skin has also been removed but they are clearly somehow still alive and in great pain. Various tubes run from their bodies to nearby flesh, fluids being drained from them apparently to feed the walls.

One of the human victims spots you and screams for help, alerting the chittering beings to your presence.

I'm still trying to figure out what constitutes the "other room" since there's basically a hallway connecting the trashy place to another room on the far side that, well, some people have trashed. Also they communicate, against all reason, in graffiti. So... is the hallway considered the room? Is the other end of the hallway back where you came from the other room? Is there an as-yet unseen room?

It's the Lair of the Trapmaster all over again!

Seems to me people find ghost children to be entirely creepy. People find little kids being hurt abhorrent so dead ones are intrinsically off-putting. Even when they aren't hostile and don't seem to mind the players. Mostly auditory and telekinetic disturbances. Sounds of children whispering. Laughing, crying, occasional cries for their mothers. Sights of strange, childlike shadows, objects, mostly toys, being moved. A player feels a small hand grip their own but looking down they see nothing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Rbm3kzQt-Y&t=31m40s

Just your normal creepy ghost kids, perfectly harmless...at least until they decide they want to "play" with you and you'd be much more fun if you joined them as ghosts. Seriously, kids can be cruel.

How about some radio stations?

>Midnight City: A smooth voiced DJ who never introduces himself plays light jazz and music that sounds like it belongs in an old Adult Swim bump. No matter where you are you can always tune in.

> You've heard stories that if you tune your radio to a certain frequency you can pick up a strange static. People say they hear their names being called, and those who listen for too long sometimes go missing. They become obsessed with the static, needing to find the source.
>>
>>53420226
I was just thinking along those lines. I like yours but I was thinking about finding a mysterious control room with radio equipment from the mid-20th century. There's a single chair in front of the terminal with a skeleton sitting in it. The skeleton is mostly held together by the clothing which, though tattered and faded, appears to be a military uniform. The top of the skull has an obvious exit wound about the size of an egg and there is an old pistol, dusty and covered in cobwebs, on the floor beside the chair. The radio equipment is still active and is playing:

This needs something more. Okay, how about this:

New York City, for instance, has a lot of top secret shit underground. Nothing too sexy, but a lot of substations, power, water, communications, etc, and a lot of pumping stations meant to keep all of this dry. The river is always the enemy. Well during WWII there was a real fear that Nazi infiltrators would try to sabotage these systems. If memory serves agents arrested some spies and found detailed plans which freaked out officials. The place is so secret it's legally allowed to shoot trespassers:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLPOmtI4W9I

So let's imagine that this soldier was at a security monitoring station. There is a dusty clipboard on a desk by the corpse. Although it's hard to read over the very old blood splatter it appears to be a fairly mundane log of various frequencies he'd picked up, noting time, frequency, and signal strength, typical guard stuff, but on the next page he's started to fill out an Incident Report form that tells a remarkable story. He talks about picking up a strange signal, the same one in the previous vid, that barely comes through the static. He can't identify where it's coming from but what really seems to be bothering him is he swears he can keep hearing it even when the equipment is turned off. He also talks about seeing "her" in the corner of his vision. He's drawn a little image that roughly matches the creepy white haired girl with the large black, empty eyes. He talks about the song getting louder in his head and the louder it becomes the closer she gets. He says she wants him to go with her but he's afraid. That's all he's written and the moment they finish reading the radio equipment suddenly dies. Still, it's too late.
>>
>>53420696
It's basically an earworm where the more you hear it the more the louder it plays in your head and the stronger the corresponding hallucinations. People who hear it tend to hum it reinforcing it and spreading it to other people. Worse it somehow seems to somehow spread to any electronic speaker around you. Cell phones, MP3 players, subway announcement systems. Each time you hear it you basically roll for San loss and when you run out you're convinced the creepy girl is coming after you to kill you, however in reality everyone who succumbs dies by their own hands without realizing it. If it plays too long over the subway system you'd end up with everyone climbing onto the track.

Anyway it's probably been done. Reminds me of those dumbass Ring movies, really. I mostly like it for the ambiguity. Is there really a creepy little girl who acts like Pyramid Head stalking people? Or is the signal somehow able to trigger a psychotic episode? Is it really spreading to nearby devices or is someone controlling it? Could it all be some kind of deadly experiment? Weaponized sound?

And more importantly for the players, how do they stop it? I have no fricking clue.

>What do your PCs find beneath the city streets, in the secret places deep underground?

They press on, through the dark tunnels, occasionally lit only by the flickering lights which line the tunnels. The light is dim and casts strange and uncomfortable shadows against the walls. The only sound is the steady dripping of moisture from some unknown place onto the floor. It seems like the tunnel is going deeper into the earth. As they descend they notice little by little that the signs of civilization fade, fewer lights, less wiring lining the concrete walls of the tunnels, the tracks, well they ceased a while back. Soon even the concrete walls of the tunnel give way to natural cave walls...

Bleak ending:
believing that they must've gone the wrong way they turn around to retrace their steps back to the train car, but find that it doesn't go back to the tunnels but more of these winding natural caves.

"Our journey begins" ending:
Deeper and deeper into the caves they continue, soon pulled down one particular tunnel by the feeling of a cool breeze. They follow the tunnel ever deeper, still tracking that breeze, they see at the far end of one large gallery a bright light. it is indeed an exit, and they all clamor out as fast as they can. Indeed they look up and see nothing but sky, but no buildings, no streets, a vast wilderness stretches before them of hills leading down into a dense forest and beyond those snow-capped mountains. from out of the trees bursts forth a kaleidoscope of colors. These are birds they have never seen... except they are not birds, they look like brightly colored stingrays swimming through the air with the ease one might swim through water. It is then that they hear something growling behind them

I'm going to guess that you guys will either prefer the Beak ending or hate them both.

Rich arab princes built underground bunkers when they sensed shit was going to hit the fan, and brought scientists with them, along with plenty of prisoners to experiment on.

I think for anything like this, the most important thing is consistency- start with a central idea and build on it so that you've got a proper consistent approach for the strangeness you encounter- are the PCs all dead after a train accident? Have encounters that fit that.

Is it something like the PCs have found themselves in old bunkers from a war / broken into a timeline where say, the cold war is still going, with strange and unsettling tech causing these anomalies?

Are you going more occult with magic in the deep places of the world, a labyrinth where all that has been forgotten will wander forever, eternally fleeing the jailer, as whats a labyrinth without a minotaur.

basically, just pick a theme and stick to it.

Would turning it off stop something propagating in people's heads? Maybe if you find a lab with some kind of "counter noise", a brown note to flush it all out. And I mean ALL.
>>
>>53425907
If you want pseudoscience then maybe a specialized white noise generator to "flush" the offending sound from the minds of people hearing it. The sound heard by humans over the radio probably isn't the problem it will probably be some kind of embedded frequency we normally can't hear. If the sound is being studied or was otherwise created it's probable that whoever did it has noise cancellation technology to "immunize" themselves, albeit only why they wear special headgear.

If you want to be really coy, you can make the "anti-sound" that destroys this one or drives it from people's heads as some pop or rap song or classic rock. Whatever fits your taste.
>>
>>53426379

In the distance, you see bright green-tinted light. As you walk along the tracks, the stone tunnels drop away and are replaced by thick green leaves. Bright light filters through the branches overhead, and the air is warm and wet like a greenhouse.

Is it sunlight? Did you finally find a tunnel that leads outside? As you scramble up the sides and brush away the branches, your heart sinks. Clouded panes of glass hide nothing more than rows of humming fluorescent lights.

Don't be fooled by the pleasant warmth and light. The trees seem to be trimmed only by the force of passing trains cars. That means another train could rush through at any moment, and the dense branches leave no space to take shelter on the sides of the tunnel.

You start out following some woman in a big city. She's a nurse. Her job drains everything out of her and she doesn't ever find time for a social life much less a family. Then you jump to a middle aged man in the same city. We see him pass a homeless veteran on his way to the subway. He says he doesn't have time to give anything. He's in a hurry to get to work. Maybe when he comes by on his way home. He gets to work and we see he's a manager, but he's past his prime and the company he works for has hired some young upstart with lots of enthusiasm and ideas who is obviously meant to replace him eventually. We see a bit of him at work and then he gets off and heads to the subway to go home. He's sitting on the train car and we cut to the woman getting off her shift and heading down into the subway. She gets on. Then things take the turn OP described. At first they run into just some basic subway tunnels and platforms with ragged sleeping bags with skeletons in them. As the story progresses, we see parts of the subway that had been turned into shops and homes at one point but are now abandoned and run down with little clues left behind about the lives of the people who used to live there. They find more bodies, some clearly dead from suicide. The story follows the two of them as they make their way up through the abandoned tunnels and at one point one of them gets an opportunity to get closer to escaping back to the surface, but they'd have to betray the other to be left behind. They take the chance and from there the story follows the two separately and we see that the chance was a false hope and whichever one backstabbed the other is no closer to getting out than they were before, and now they're alone.

Secret underground cities are my jam.

The flavor I prefer is temporally displaced future city. I realize it's fairly Dinocrisis/Chrono Cross, but rather than the typical ruins I like the notion that some far future calamity forces an extreme survival tactic: relocate a colony into Earth's own past. If you want to avoid the question of why they don't try to prevent the calamity it can be the past of a parallel Earth or whatever threat humanity faces may be too big to be met otherwise. They could be researching a solution on their own.

They can slowly siphon resources for their own needs and even sending explorers to the surface but otherwise do not abide anyone from the past discovering them.
>>
>>53433836
You can easily do a variation on this one where the city isn't populated by future people at all. They're actually from the present, part of a government experiment in wormhole technology for the purposes of exploring...

>time
>alternate realities
>alien worlds
>all three

Basically stealing a page from Stargate where they've been reaping huge benefits from their activities and applying the technology to expand their own operations but they are extremely hesitant to share technology with the world at large until they know it is safe and it won't disrupt the economy.
>>
Hm. How about discovering a secret lunar installation under [name major city here]? How the hell does that make sense? It's a test to create a fully functioning, self-sustaining base to test the viability of future lunar colonization. According to documents found on-site it was dreamed up in the 60s with the purpose of creating a secret colony on the moon. In the event the Cold War went hot Americans/British/Russians/Canadians/TexMexicans/WHOEVER BUILT IT would survive long enough to eventually return to repopulate the Earth. The base was finished in the late 70s and sealed on June 12th, 1979 for a long-term isolation study. The base was fully staffed with some of the best and brightest in several fields who were allowed to conduct various experiments to occupy themselves. There are nearly two years worth of extremely tedious logs detailing secret monitoring of the experiment which suddenly stop on January 3rd, 1981, the entire endeavor presumably completed or abandoned.

The front entrance is sealed with a keypad to the right of the door. The door itself is extremely heavy looking reinforced metal with a single viewport. Wiping away a layer of dust brings two surprises. The first is that the interior of the base is lit. At the very least the generators have proven their long-term viability. The other surprise is a series of curious symbols that are quickly recognized as backwards numbers someone has scrawled on the inside of the glass. This is the code for the keypad to unseal the facility.

At this point any sensible person would NOPE the fuck out of there but oh no this is a scenario as-if written by Ridley Scott, dammit! Time to earn your Darwin Award! I mean what's the worst that could happen?
>>
>>53434449
What's the worst that could happen?

Well first comes the curiously horrible odor as the long sealed away atmosphere meets the outside world for the first time in decades. Then there is the discovery that the numbers were apparently written in blood. In fact there is a LOT of blood on the floor you couldn't see through the viewport. It's quite an alarming amount of blood, probably more than a single person could stand to lose, but despite that there is no body.

In case you were planning on leaving at this point the door suddenly slams shut and the electronic locks activate. Turns out the base wasn't abandoned; it was quarantined. When unsealed some alarm activates in some far-off government facility. At first it causes confusion, then when they figure out what it means they quickly reactivate the lockdown. Oh, and there is no keypad to open the door from the inside which seems to explain why someone went to the trouble of writing the unlock code in their handily available blood.

Whatever else the players discover here they'll also have to eventually deal with a government clean team sent to ascertain who opened the facility, why, and eliminate them even if they turn out to be the kids from Scooby-Doo.

You could run a number of different scenarios here.

It's obvious, someone wanted you to come down to these depths. They wanted you to ride this train and find the small toy train. But who? Why?

Well thank goodness the Hogwarts express showed up but those wizards have shit skills at blending in.

Santa. He runs these elaborate passive aggressive plots to see how people react in the hopes of correctly deducing the big thing for the coming holiday. The elves have to make all of that shit in advance, you know.

Of course there IS the unfortunate fact that now the party will know too much and now the Jolly Fat Man had to send in a kick murder squad of his best elves to deal with them.

"Don't think of what has to happen as a naughty act. Trust me, I know all about these things. Think of this as the chance to ensure your surviving relatives get something extra nice this Christmas courtesy of your's truly. Ho. Ho. Go for the kneecaps, Jolly Boys!"

Don't think escaping to the surface means you're safe, either.

Damn Jolly Boys have zero trigger discipline.

/k/ris /k/ringle doesn't care about trigger discipline because he's not worried about collateral damage. Jolly Boy Jenkins just shut a little boy in the face waiting in line to talk to Santa because he had a bad feeling about how long that kid was sucking on a candy cane, like he was sharpening it. Peppermint stakes are the only way to take down a Santa, after all.

Kinda hoping this thread doesn't die with Santa, though.

We have plenty of train tunnels. Can we get some more sewers, storm drains, and cisterns in the thread?

Feels like sewers tend to trigger certain people. The whole "unreasonably spacious" thing. I mean it's true sewers aren't going to be chock full of, say, ninja turtle style lairs but who plays games to only match reality?

Besides, these are largely anomalous settings anyway. Kind of the point, really.

storms could be an interesting element here. just knowing that whenever you enter the sewers there's a chance that a storm's brewing up above and the torrent of water could drown the whole party.
