I'm developing a semi-realistic post-apocalyptic setting, and I'm at a loss for faction ideas. This isn't /pol/bait, and I don't intend to start an argument.
>>
>>52957277
A conquest-happy king, with a close cadre of his most trusted advisors. Essentially the reverse-Immortan Joe.

He wants to conquer all his neighbors, and crush any resistance, and will fucking slaughter raider factions without mercy, but he does it because he wants to make a new society better than the ones that lead to the world's destruction.

Kinda like the Emperor of Mankind, except he actually practices what he teaches. IE: no slavery, no murder of civilians, no torture. Just excessive amounts of propaganda and patriotism so that the citizenry just wants to go out there and conquer and liberate everything.
>>
>>52957277

Are you asking me what I would attempt to establish under ideal circumstances following the fall of the government given the opportunity?
>>
>>52957277

Matriarchial empire of slavery and rape
>>
>>52957447

Thank you anon.

>>52957460

Hmm, I suppose so.

>>52957467

Femdom much?
>>
>>52957277

An illuminated aristocracy, with a side of meritocracy, not based on market's values (tough I guess there' nothing wrong trying to get rich), and generally if not social mobility at least the possibility to become what now would be upper-middle class.
Not really post-apo, right?

For you: some kind of illuminated technocracy. Science IS good, government is rational (but yeah, core values are pretty strong, they don't think art is bad, etc.), all this. For something unexpected, they might see rituals as something useful and perfectly fit for human sociology purposes.
>>
>>52957277
Btw OP you are fucking optimistic if you think /pol/lacks aren't gonna make their own bait.

If your fortunate, the fact that these are all post-apoc societies means you can subconsciously label some of them as "villain" factions without having to turn it into an argument.
>>
>>52957488

Right well then I shall attempt to answer your question.

In the event of an apocalyptic scenario I would attempt to gather together my friend and their extended families. I have a secured location prepared in the mountains (i'm not even kidding about this) and I would offer them shelter if they brought along food weapons or expertise. My friends are for the most part an eclectic bunch of gun nuts and hobby survivalists. Rather than attempt to assert dominance I would work towards a ruling council where each family was represented by a single individual with the head of the council being elected by the other councilors. A loose congregation of families working together which I could ultimately see evolving into something almost like a collection of inter related clans or tribes as each family grows larger over time.

I would propose issolationism as much as possible, however the possiblity that the mountain would not be able to entirely support our population as it got larger exists, so eventually they may turn to raiding.

Honestly I just want me and my family to be safe, and I don't want some jackass giving me orders. A collective of friends and family held together by kinship and basic democratic process would be ideal in my opinion, though it would never be a powerhouse.
>>
>>52957503

Thank you anon, your concept somewhat reminds me of the scientists and fake AI in The Postman.

>>52957564

To be fair, almost anything can be twisted or changed to fit a good or evil role in a setting, but that doesn't add much depth.

>>52957619

Thank you for your detailed post anon.
>>
If I had my own little society I was the leader of, It'd end up a pretty hippie "free love" kind of place, but the highest social status, in order, would go to doctors, engineers, and farmers/chefs. Slavery would be considered the worst of all crimes and any military power we had would be focused on rooting it out of the outside world.
>>
>>52957619

for the record I have thirty plus cousins, then there are my brothers, their wives, their cousins, the cousins families, and cousins who have adult children, and of course my in laws. Altogether my extended family that is within reach is probably easily over a hundred people. Most of my friends families are about the same. Hell one of my good friends has 7 siblings and half of them are married. If we could pull them all together we'd be a pretty big damn group of people. realistically we wouldn't get them all, but you said ideal soooo yeah.
>>
>>52957277

>>

that's the only place where people I know of with families that big come from.
>>

A Democratic Socialist Kritarchy? Neat, thank you anon.
>>
For a post-apocalypse?
A society that inspires creativity and construction, doing the best they can to make cities of beauty and self-sufficiency.

I'm a redneck mate. Now i'm not uneducated mind you, I went to uni on scholarship (first man in my family to got to college actually. My brother's are dumb asses), but I am a gun toting bible thumping redneck and I am not ashamed of it.
>>
>>52957447
That only sounds great if you're one of the people on his side. If you're the country being invaded, well...
Also, he may be great at conquering, but that's saying nothing about how he'd actually be as a leader in peacetime.
>>
>>52957738

Family reunions are hell. I swear I don't even recognize half of the people there.
>>
>>52957277
Epicurean commune. That or stoic commune.
>>
>>52957818
Basically I just want Ataraxia.
>>
>>52957277
Options are pretty simple.

Scientist faction, separate form others for no good reason.

Raider faction (lol, bodies everywhere?)

Previous Government faction

Competing Previous Government faction

Expanding Empire, good or bad, based on a historical system like Rome or America-In-The-Bad-Ways

Good Guy Faction that is America-in-the-good-ways

Endless "societies" originally made from family groups with hangers-on, some form of monarchy in name only or sorta-democratic councils.

Might be something I've missed but most things have a version here.
>>
>>52957778
hey, i never said there was anything wrong with it, just asking for reference.

i ask because my uncle is from Virginia- one of nine kids. for my cousin's wedding, there were well over 50 family members from his side. from my aunt's side, just the four of us. it was...startling, to say the least.

I nearly got kicked out of the reception for laughing when someone said "thank god there wasn't any rain"
>>
>>52957798
I could go more into detail on it, but I decided to leave the faults more open because that makes for a more interesting post-apoc faction. Since we're talking realism-inspired fiction and not actual political ideologies.
>>
what is the central conflict, why are the factions not at war, and what are the interests of each faction
>>
>>52957841

Oddly enough while my fathers side of things comes from virginia me mum is from a different part of the country where you actually see comparable numbers as far as families go. Probably couldn't get to moms family, but in the event of an apocalyptic situation I wouldn't worry about them. People around where they live would pull together.

I'm still developing the setting. It's somewhat vague, but the idea is that it takes place a few decades/centuries after a solar flare and a weaponized smallpox epidemic bring mankind back to dark ages, with bits and pieces of modern technology.
>>
So where would this be set in? I mean some things make sense for some places more than others. Your not going to get a collection of red neck tribes living in the mountains and descending to raid for supplies in a place without either mountains or rednecks.

>semi-realistic post-apocalyptic setting
How about a militaristic defensive militia, formed from the remnants of the citizen militias and preppers that survived the apocalypse? Basically /k/ incarnate, they are highly distrustful of others, but if you're one of them they'll fight and die alongside you no matter the circumstance.

Despite their militarism they aren't particularly authoritarian, mostly using hierarchy based on age and military experience. They tend to live up in the mountains and forest hills, but if they see a strategic target such as a bridge they'll seize it and enact a toll on travelers and merchants. They're very well fortified in their mountain fortresses, but also isolationist with few allies to turn to, and viewed mostly as a roadblock to expansion by the other factions.
>>
>>52957989

You ever heard of Utah? Families with twelve who adopt more are not unheard of, I kid you not. Dated a girl from there once who was second oldest of eight. Mormons fuck like rabbits.
>>
>>52957979
SURE DO. they're just not as widely well known.

mostly, they live in the central valley or north of Sacramento. met a family of them recently transplanted from Mississippi to east of San Diego as well. the further inland from the coast, the more likely you'll run into them.

I mean they don't drink and they're a bit uptight about some things, but they're just people. Nice people even for the most part in my experience. People give em a bad rep, but people say a lot of shit about rednecks too, and there's nothing wrong with us. A caste system city-state where the citizens lack reproductive rights, and periodically the government assign them a partner based on factors such as health, intelligence and temperament. Other than that, they can live their sexual and romantic lives with a surprising degree of freedom: as long as they take contraceptive pills/herbs/have sex while already pregnant they are free to choose whatever companions they want.

Kids are taken from their parents at a very young age and are educated collectively by the teachers-leaders caste. At puberty, they must undergo a rite of passage that determines to which caste they'll be assigned. If someone feels they have been assigend to the wrong caste, they can choose to re-take the test every ten years.

Anything historic that once used horses is a good option.

Either because gas in scarce now, so you can keep the horses. And a lot of old professions that needed steeds are now back in demand (knights for defence, cowboys for livestock protection/law enforcement)

And then going off that, any profession that used horses can now be updated to use motorcycles and buggies, thereby making it even more fucking awesome.

>>52958185

I'm sure there are, but there are some pretty shitty rednecks too, and there are shitty city folk, and there are shitty atheists. And there are good people in all those groups too. Honestly there are good people and shitty people in every group. There aren't many groups I'd believe are nothing but shitty people. Peoples people, and you get all kinds. I know there are shitty mormons, I ain't saying their perfect, I'm just saying in my experience they aren't as bad as some people make em out to be. certainly not children of the corn level.

Ataraxia literally translates as "not perturbed". It's a central concept in Epicureanism and a secondary one in Stoicism. It has different paths to achieving it across Greaco-Roman philosophy, but essentially it's a kind of detachment to achieve true happiness. By not being concerned with physical passions, metaphysical questions, or vexatious people, one finds peace.

Epicureans largely tried to do this by living in small communes with their close friends and lived subsistence/lightly mercantile lives. Just good but not decadent food, friendly company, and no social worries. It's what I would hope to achieve in the post apocalypse because I no longer have social expectations or structures to make it irritating.

You could spin some Buddhist themes in or make them have a slightly martial bent to make them survivable.

Let's assume right off the bat that I can actually set up this society.

Simply put, it would be almost completely underground. Hydroponics would be used to create the main source of food, and it would be used in abundance. The society would be built as two inverse underground pyramids, with one being having hydroponics on the upper layers and living spaces in the bottom, and the other being the opposite. It would be set up so that there should, barring war, always be enough food to feed everyone up to full strength for three months with only reserve stock. Any passageways outside of the main two bunkers would be at least a mile away, with twists and turns to provide checkpoints in case of invasion, making war with them hard, although if you found their location from above-ground, digging into it and invading there would basically ruin them.

Just enough understanding of electricity to keep the Hydroponics running and light up the place for 8 hours every day. Any entertainment is brought back by scavengers or whatever was left over from before the apocalypse. The government would be a democratic dictatorship, aka everyone decides on things via direct voting, but if it the society is ever starting to fuck up or they go to war, a dictator is voted into power for the duration of the crisis, with a hard limit of two years before reverting to democracy with no chance of overturning.

Basically "Survivalist Ancient Rome, but underground."

I guess the early Roman republic was pretty cool. Everyone working for the good of the whole and all that. The only thing is such a society is only sustainable if there's an existential threat.
The late republic is cool too, but less to live in, more to read about

Eco-anarchism where everyone is armed and trained, close knit community more akin to a big ole family, the surrounding lands belong to everyone in our faction, justice is meted out by wandering judges who nominate random townsfolk as prosecutor and jury and the accused picks his own advocate (can self represent), and any authoritarian hierarchy is ruthlessly persecuted.

Also any loot that can't be scrapped for more infrastructure or belongs to future-citizens.
>>
>>52958553
I think that's probably a good thing, really?

I mean, we don't, collectively, know all that much about designing institutions. We do know that some of the ones we've got now are the best we've had-- the "western liberal democracies." But it's very hard to say where we should go from here. Small steps, small experiments in policy, are probably safer than large ones.

So... the idea that you can specify some kind of perfect end state seems silly. It feels like an act of hubris to hold any particular scheme of social organization to be "ideal," although, as I said before, we have come up with some ideas that appear to be pretty good.
>>
>>52957277
Probably something sorta like the Hanseatic league.

Everything is done democratically on the local level. The guys with money rule, but they've got to buy the votes, and they can't skimp, or the competition will out bid them.

The church has a big role too, but it's less golden candelabras and more social safety net.

>>52958997

That was actually the plot of a really shitty book. Technology stopped working and a medieval recreationist established a fuedal kingdom by recruiting gangs to be his knights and making the gang leaders his nobles.
>>
>>52958273
I think a philosopher faction is always fun. I've been thinking about a "Brotherhood of Dogs" diogenes-esque league of assassins for a minor faction in a fantasy setting.
>>
>>52958855
I agree. Personally I find law in general to be a necessary evil in the face of greater issues like inequality and instability.

I think a good system then would be one that's most open to other systems. A skeleton of federalism, where laws are most specific on the local level and catered to those who have to vote on and live under them, would probably be a good starting point.

Where you go from there is up in the air, in terms of moral priorities. Any society needs SOME kind of collective moral value, however loose, otherwise nobody cares to support the society. I know "knowledge" would definitely have to be a good focus for any society that wants to progress. A healthy respect for art and literature would also be good, since it helps to define a national identity and allow a steam-vent for political criticism.

I'm a man interested in having a large family. (4+ kids if God willing). What's the chances of me getting involved with a good mormon girl?
>>
>>52961837

Depends. I'm willing to bet there are Mormons who live in your area, and you typically have better odds outside of Utah since there are fewer Mormons for the ladies to choose from so they end up dating guys who aren't members of their religion. There isn't anything that specifically prohibits them from marrying outside the religion, but because an important tenant of the faith is marriage inside one of their temples which requires both parties be faithful members it can be difficult to convince them. It really depends on the girl and how devout she is and your own position. Obviously your age and your own circumstances will affect all of this. Frankly it's not an easy fix, and if you wanted to marry one you'd have to be willing to put up with their religious beliefs and the fact that they would probably try to convert you.

Former workers banding together to form a micro-commune that is extremely militaristic and is waging a "People's War" against the other local powers.

A group of military deserters who have established a military feudal system (Instead of Barons/Lords/Whatever you have Lieutenants, Majors, whatever) in the ruins of a city.

An oil empire that controls several old fuel reserves that didn't fall with the rest of society. They also produce alcohol fuel, and offer engine conversions for such. Managed to survive and claim neutrality due to being able to power their IFVs/Armour/Etc

My ideal society is an authoritarian regime where all executive powers were given to poweful AIs who have the strict task to uphold and preserve humanity.
They would make sure that intense automatization allows for a vast access to resources so everybody has enough to eat and can decide to work or not for society.
Wars are mainly led by AIs and robots, so that humand losses are reduced.
Of course it would be more post post apocalyptic, after the AIs decided to wipe old humanity out to create a new breed more intelligent and inclined to internal peace

>What is your ideal society?
Short story: Franco-Roman Republicanism.

Long story: a republic where equality exists before the law, not in outcome. It would be a republic with an independent legislative (unicameral), judiciary (various courts) and executive power (in the form of the consul and his handpicked advisors). These consuls would be incredibly powerful, limited only by the two other branches, but in turn would only be allowed to serve for one year. I would also imagine that they'd be prepared for the role through some modernized form of the cursus honorium. For the sake of creating authority, the office of consul would have a lot of pomp and circumstance around it, to the point where it would appear like royalty to an outside observer.

In a republic which values equality this highly there would be no nobility of birth, at least not formally (families with old money would remain powerful throughout the generations and there may even be family names with a certain reputation attached to it, but these aren't acknowledged by law). Suffrage would be regulated in a Rousseauvian way, which I will for now dub conditional universal suffrage. All ablebodied men who are sound of mind are forced to serve in the military for a certain term (I imagine 2 years after graduating high school, so they can serve and from there move on to university, perhaps picking up useful skills and knowledge along the way. Or they could remain in the military as professionals and grow through the ranks). These men would only be granted the right to vote and be elected after having completed their conscription (or exceptional circumstances like suffering a crippling wound during conscription). For women it's the same story, with one exception: everything is optional. This means a woman can choose to not be conscripted (as opposed to men), but this will also mean that she will never have either active or passive suffrage: he will be a passive citizen.

Speaking of citizenship, it would be split between active (full suffrage) and passive (no suffrage) citizenship. Suffrage is discussed above, but (passive) citizenship would be hereditary: the legitimate(!) children of at least one parent with citizenship would automatically become passive citizens. Of course the conscripted would not be allowed to marry, and any bastards produced by serving conscripts would be deemed non-citizens. Same for first generation immigrants: they can become nationals but not citizens. The children of nationals, if they are born on the republic's territory, become passive citizens (with the option to become active citizens upon adulthood). This is mostly to maintain social cohesion and identity, and to make the political sphere as immune as possible to foreign subversive elements.

There should also be a series of "state of emergency" legislation to allow for dictators in the Roman sense to take the reins if the Republic is for one reason or another tumbling towards a crisis. Ideally the constitution would be designed in such a way that it remains active during this state of emergency and merely contain provisions that allow for more qualified laws to be temporarily lifted.

I actually had a fallout character who's whole thing was he was the carrier of "The Orb".
It was a bowling ball, but no one really bothered to pass down the game of bowling through word of mouth so a couple generations after the bombs fell no one knew what it was, so he carried it around the wasteland waiting for it to lead him to his destiny.

Vocal opponents of the regime are banished to an anarchistic exclusion zone to do as they please.

My ideal society is one where automation liberates humans from hard labor, allowing us to all pursue our passions and interests. Strict controls on A.I. and surveillance technology allow people to live without fear, and the human rights to free thought, belief, expression and survival are respected. Research into psychoactive compounds allows many in this industrialized society to access the inner world known to shamans and lost to modern man, while traditional cultures of peoples are respected and unmolested in a multicultural setting, less like the "melting pot" and more like a smorgasbord.

TL;DR: Automated future-primitive-digital society where everyone may live without strain and cultivate the fruits of civilization.

Ideally? Just a society of people not being assholes to each other working on sustaining themselves, advancing scientific knowledge, and expanding into the stars.

But you can't just hope people aren't assholes. (not without a REALLY intense controlled breeding program, which would be more trouble than it's worth).

Any form of government that isn't democratic turns into an elite group oppressing the have-nots. Even democracies can turn into democracies in name only.

Capitalism, while terrible, is the best system we've seen work. (Seriously, a centralized economy like you see in communism DOES NOT WORK). And to keep all the wealth accumulating with the people/companies that use their market share to capture more wealth, a progressive tax structure make sense.

We're going for ideals right? Let's say we've got robots that take care of: Food production, clothing production, and home construction. Or at least take minimal human oversight. Which.... by the way, we're practically there. Farms are HUGE these days. Only a few parts of clothing is done by hand. They're both REALLY cheap compared to decades past. You can spend as much as you want on those items, because fashion and fanciness have no upper cost. But the basics are cheap. Housing? Yeah, that's still a problem. Cheap giant condos.... kinda suck. And aren't all that cheap. We're working on it.

Anyway, with the necessities out of the way, or at least hella cheap, everyone is free to work on... whatever they want to work on. The problem being that there's not really good paying jobs for the masses if "sustaining ourselves" is now automated. That has some serious psychological ramifications. People need to be needed. I don't really know a great solution to this. Welfare for the starving? I guess. At long as the necessities are cheap, they don't need much to live.

So... Like now, but without the war-mongering and fascists.

Druidic animist theocratic sea nomads.

Formally known as "Ferryfolk", they are zealots of the sea that offer safe passage along the coast, asking that the travellers pay the ferrytoll obviously as well as respect their beliefs.

Not push overs though, you start shit and you will be thrown overboard and put to the test by the mother ocean herself.

In my mind they'd be a culty type with groups all over the nation, and once a year they have like.. some kind of rammadan/christmas where they gather in one spot to celebrate water.

Would it flourish? Maybe not, but they'd most likely work super well with other factions.

>What is your ideal society?
I didn't read this thread, but I sort of doubt anyone is as retarded as I am anyway, so I'm probably not threading on any toes.

Dictatorship with heavy elements of social engineering to control the population, e.g. by widespread proliferation of propaganda games that reward conformity through user reporting and encouraged ostracism. The goal of the society is advancement, "on the shoulders of our ancestors, we stand tallest." Create an environment that takes pride on technological advancement in order to quash moral opposition to things like human experimentation. Breed nationalism and xenophobia to develop an echo chamber, and limit ability to access information from outside the border. Implement programs designed to identify a person's ideal career, and provide the resources they need. Don't use wage slaves, just use robots for menial repetitive tasks. If someone can't contribute and needs money, they can volunteer themselves to research.

As an italian I might be biased, but I like the Renaissance comunal system
Basically pseudo-democratic (think more elective oligarchy in practice) city-states that can be micromanaged efficiently to a certain degree due to a significantly smaller population.
This also opens near-infinite possibilities in terms of interactions between the factions, especially if you throw in some actual monarchies, greek democracies or more exotic governments among the comuni.

How about a Militant Technocracy?

Scientists, engineers, and experts in every field who survive whatever disaster band together and convince other survivors that their only hope of restoring the old world is to save knowledge and difficult to reproduce technology, through whatever means necessary. Highly militarized, with a governing body of foremost experts in whatever fields.
