I always just consider kobolds to be like those prehistoric lizard-like mammal ancestors. scaley skin but also fur and warm blooded.

Well, I was going to bring up something that's always miffed me, with both Kobolds and other reptile races.

Why are they always depicted as Digitigrade? Most all reptiles (save for a few extinct dinosaurs) are Plantigrade, as are many depictions of dragons. Further, even if we were to call then a pseudo mammal-reptile that doesn't seem right either, since digit I grade is mostly found in Order Carnivora, and even the primitive pseudo-mammals like the Synapsids were plantigrade.

Plus Plantigrade is much more conducive for a subterranean lifestyle than digitigrade

I'm sorry, I may be fine with both sides of the breast debate, but the legs part just bothers me.

They are, and so should kobolds. Humans do walk similar to digigrade when on hard/rough terrain while barefood. Kobolds tend to be barefoot and live most of their lives in rocky caves where the ground is rough/hard. So while they are plantigrade they almost never walk that way because of the environment they live in.
Alternatively the fact they are bipedal and live in rocky caves could have caused them to evolve digigrade legs

Anyway, as stated above, Digitigrade is good for chase and ambush predators (usually cursorial or arborial in nature), much like how most canines and felines act. Digitigrade increases stride, decreases surface area to reduce drag against the ground. While stability would be a problem for the bipedal dinos and birds, they often work around it with wide splayed-out toes, less dense body structure (such as hollow bones), an altered center of gravity due to horizontal body plane(effectively using the same geometry as quadrupeds) and long tails for counterbalance, and alterations in dactyly (such as toe postion, size, and fusion of digits). Further, many dinosaurs tended to also be semi-digitigrade, meaning they still rested alot of weight in the space between the fingers and heel

It should also be noted that some birds, specifically the Loons and Grebes are plantigrade. Further chicks walk with their whole foot on the ground.

Now, most birds (with the exception of running/flightless birds) don't use their feat for climbing or travel, but rather for grasping, holding, catching, killing (exclusively raptors, and they have their own plethora of specific foot adaptations) jumping, cradling, and swimming. Their light body structure give them advantages in jumping and in flight take off, but for most birds their preffered and fastest method of travel and escape is still flight, which is true even in primarily land based species like Quail.

Ostritches are freaks and exceptions. Their feet and legs have become so highly specialized that its bare digitigrade anymore in terms of function, and honesl the only reason they've held on to that design is to take advantage of leg length and as an evolutionary remnant

As for more info on dinos, I admit its not my forte, as I specialize in Wildlife Biology, not Paleontology.

In short, for Kobolds to be digitigrade, they'd need more specialized body plan adaptations, and be less humanoid shape
