Where do monsters come from in your setting?
>>
They form spontaneously in the dark places of the world.

So... your setting is minecraft?
>>
>>50253038
They come from their mum n pop. Monsters are best when they have a since of realism to their fantasy aspect. Like Harpies born from eggs in canyons raised until old enough to at least pick up a small child. Or Naga/llamas are just born like any animal would be and proceed to grow and become cunts/ride dicks/monsters

Those who desire eternal life can become undead but to continue existing they must eat people.

There is also a lot of shit left after a War. When an army of demons invaded the world and finding that they can't just crush gods and armies they started experimenting with creating different monsters.

A lot of fantasy creatures even powerful are not considered monsters per se. They are just animals even if powerful. Most of them came into existence because after creating the world gods decided to have a little party and there was too much alcohol. Like really too much. When they come to their senses things like dragons, krakens and at least a couple of hundreds of other species were already created.

The father, god of corruption sometimes put his finger into the game his childrem are playing in the mortal realm, it always end with some very weird stuff manifesting in places. A mark of his corruption is purple, thick rain falling from the sky. Its advised to not get wet on it, as you will make your presence be know to the "evil essence" and it might or might not use you as a pawn, wich normally results in mutations to make you fit for wathever task he wants you to do.

Mortals have only enough knowledge of what the purple rain is, as the higher gods arent even know to them.

Domestically, they breed true with themselves, and with each other, so good old fashioned way still works.

Otherwise elementals, fey, demons, angels, etc are all flavors of "beings on our realm from a higher power plane, manifesting form through their specific tone and will".

Very high up is the eternal blackness of entropic chaos, which spawns the elder evils of our world.

In the other direction is the high density crunch of the collapse of matter under the purity of light and energy, where the omniconsciousness of pure will comes in. So inevitables, and angels.

So, in setting there are only humans, but there are non-human intelligences. All magic is done through metaphysical parasites that exemplify negative emotion and are actually equivalent to an original sin scenario for humanity (humans do not sin without these things around). They wait for depraved and weak men to go too far and in a moment of weakness take over.

Mythical creatures are people who interact with what comes after. Most of the time these beings do not exist on the same sort of existence as humans, but either up or down the Range, out of phase essentially. Without having your own parasite attached to you seeing them is impossible.

Goblins would be considered a common breed, and exist as a creature born out of fear. They shrink, making a smaller humanoid covered in wrinkled and folded skin. Their faces look ape like and they are completely hairless. Their limbs grow thin and overly long. This smaller body allows them to squeeze through holes and worm their way into dark and hidden places.

All creatures used to be human. I have a ton, some of which are expy for mythological creatures.

My favorite is the centaur. It's basically a set of legs without a torso, instead the spine has turned into something like a stinger sticking out. It finds someone by themselves and drills into the base of their spine. They then pump them full of adrenaline and endorphins every time something happens. So they jump at shadows and freak out at everything.

throughout the world the ancients(think lovecraftian Old-Ones) placed "corruptors" under hills, buried in forests, embedded in mountains, dropped in lakes and rivers and oceans, sunk in swamps, and encapsulated in glaciers. these corruptors emit energies that change creatures over time, frequently if not in every case the changed creatures are hostile. changes include increases in size, growth of abnormal components such as chitin-plates, bone-spurs, extra limbs, etc. changes in behavior, an increase in procreation drive and other less distinct changes.

the energies emitted by corruptors produce tell-tale changes in the environments around them including raised growth-rates of vegetation, a pleasant feeling of emotional warmth, and a noticeable decrease in ground and atmospheric temperature.

these stones are also natural conduits for the worlds magic and very difficult to damage or move. they in fact were placed as a sort of "global arcane network" the monster creation was deemed "an acceptable environmental side-effect" that produced harmless curiosities.

Most of them just managed to intentionally or not slip through the cracks during planar alignments which happen every thousand years or so. A lot of the creatures die off but some manage to survive or at least breed with native life to create hybrids before dying off.

The Blood Lake.

Essentially, all monstrous creatures and abominations that escape the northern continent's military after emerging through the lake, go on to spawn more monsters by yet undetermined means. All other more civilized creatures (elf, dwarf, goblin, orc, dragons, etc) were already a part of the world as early as history can record, and treat one another with traditional respect, caution, racism, and kindness as npc and PC persons tend to do.

In a way. It works similar to the Mages from World of Darkness.

Humanity being a collective consciousness of sorts, only well known myths and monsters become real. It only takes a hundred people or so to start spawning nightmares, and the more people know about it, the more monsters spawn. It's a terrible self-perpetuating cycle.

The myths eventually mutate due to ages of retelling, language mistranslated, or exaggeration, which is often how the monsters get so bad in the first place. A story about a hunter fighting off a massive ravenous wolf, narrowly escaping with his life, is much more interesting than the real story about the regular hunter scaring off a regular wolf. And the wolf only gets bigger with each retelling. Eventually it's common knowledge that a giant monster-wolf prowls the area, and evidence of the wolf's presence shows up not too long after.

they were there before us, we descend from them, but then we killed most of them because they are unpure, uncivilized etc.
Some survived because of they managed to bargain with us ( we give you gold, you let us live), because they hid themselves or because they are so strong that it isnt worth the risk. Sure, a dragon destroys a city from time to time, but fighting him may make it worse.

Sometimes the gods are dicks and create Monsters or transform people into them, but usually that doesnt happen, since the gods are usually to preoccupied doing other stuff. In my setting gods created the world, but aprox. 1000 years ago they lost interest in it and leave it to its fate. Most people know that because the gods told them that they are bored. Most gods still check in earth every few years, perform some miracles and then leave.

In the past people who created monsters were punished by the gods, but the gods stopped doing that, so that alchemists can create chimeras and necromancy is the hottest new trend among wizards around the world.

Tunnels deep underground exist in between worlds, and by taking the right path one can find the inside-out mirror world of Midnight, where there is no sun and it is lit by the eternal full moon in the center of the sky.
On one side of Midnight sleeps Father Wyrm, pinned to the ground by six massive spears. If any of them are moved he would stir from his slumber and awaken to devour the world from the inside out. From his blood all dragons are born. His dark aura seeps through to the true world analogous to his location in Midnight, and twists aspects of it into evil beings.

On the opposite side of Midnight there is The Firebird, mad with rage as it is unable to take flight while its wings are soaked from the lake of boiling lead it was thrown into in antiquity. It still does not realize that if it had the patience to calm down and quell its flame the metal would harden and it could easily break free to gain vengeance against the gods that trapped it there. The feathers that are torn off in its struggle contain a spark of life that creates malevolent elementals and spirits.

To the north of them both is the sinister Leviathan, frozen in the glaciers. One of her heads is free, and she speaks through it lies and temptations to any of weak will or greedy heart. She will look into the minds of the innocent and give them their greatest desires for the smallest and most harmless of favors, but they all serve to further her goals. Her machinations are far reaching and complex, for she knows that there is all of eternity for her to orchestrate the escape of herself and her siblings. Each day brings the final result closer, and soon she will gladly see everything fall.

>>50253038
Some come from other planes, were created by powerful magic-users in centuries past, or are the direct creation of gods, but most of them are the byproduct of a divine-scale war fought among the gods of my setting some 2000 years before the setting's "present time"; basically the world was once ruled by an almost almighty, supreme chaos god. The lesser gods where like puppets for his entertainment, but they managed to uncover some secrets beyond the chaos god's gaze. With those secrets they re-opened a long lost and forgotten system of portals to a pocket universe where the primordial gods (original creators of the Universe and parents to the chaos god) had stored away the Pulse, the primorial energy of creation. Wielding this power, the lesser gods defeated their oppressor and brought balance to Creation, but on the process they spilled Pulse all over the Universe, involuntarily creating all manner of mutant monsters, eldritch shit and undead abominations.

In short,it's my own not!Chaos.

When Giants try to reproduce, they spawn progressively more horrific monsters. The thousands of spells, alchemical processes, and half-breeds they've tried to make have just ended up with worse. And when they kill the monsters at birth, you get new forms of undead.

In other cases, the incarnation of life itself realized that it fucking hates sapient beings and shat out terrible monsters to get rid of them, or sometimes the fates dream up something to challenge whatever mortal they're laughing at this week.

In my world, Dungeons are sentient creatures that prey on humans. All forms of monsters are created by dungeons, to either protect themselves, or to go hunt people/other Dungeons. The creatures are more puppets than actually anything of substance.

For example, if someone were to use a mind reading power on a goblin, they would just mind a layer of commands, based on what the Dungeon needed it to do. Any attempt to translate their language would fail, as it really isn't a language, just a collections of sounds that tries to sound like language.

Scholars are still trying to figure out, if the Dungeon is basing creatures on some sort of old folk-lore, or if the creatures are designed to mimic life just for the sake of fear-fucking humanity.
>>
Normal monsters are a result of evolution like sentient humanoids and animals. Giants, dragonkin, monstrous vermin etc. More unnatural/otherworldly monsters came from a comet that hit the worlds moon. The pieces fell into the sea and the monsters came out of the larger pieces.

Is the big twist that humans are just a kind of monster, created by a dungeon in an age long past, that became self-aware and broke their dungeony shackles?
>>
In my setting, monsters were and are still the result of imbalanced elements and humors in life. In the early days before the land and firmament were properly established and the world was more empty, barren, and unformed, the meddling divines made animals that could survive in those elemental conditions. This is fine, those animals still exist today. But they were dissatisfied, they wanted to make life that could appreciate the creation around them and worship them. Since all the divines worked separately, their creations needed to resemble animals that could survive in their creator's biomes to function.

Thus the first four primordial races of thinking beings:
(Crow-men) of Radiance
(Butterfly-men) of Air
(Hippo-men) of Water
(Crab-men) of Darkness.
They were all possessed of a rudimentary civilisation, but were not particularly inclined to a fixation with the divines. Even those that realised that they were in a constructed reality and figured out the nature of their creators didn't head out to construct vast cathedrals or sacrifice in their name. It was just another fact of life that the gods were out there, doing what they, by their very nature, must always do.

These were eventually followed by what is still generally considered the 5th primordial race, the (Goat-men) since Earth is the basal elemental consequence of mixing all four elements.

The (Goat-men) were by far the most successful, and raised monuments and cities on a titanic scale. They did in fact institute some low level state religion shenanigans, but ultimately through the attention they paid to the divines simply aspired to reach, supplant and rule the heavens themselves.

Dissatisfied, the divines began cooperating to find an alternative to their failed creations, and created first a race of ape-men, who were very pious indeed, but also slow, lazy, and with very little will to survive, leading to most low level divine interventions killing them off as collateral.
>>
>>50253697
this is legitimately what happened in my setting. a war spiraled out of control, humans on one side, elves, and not!dwarves on the other. elves and not!dwarves steamrolled across the human nation, but couldn't break the last city for ages. humans went full on crazy and put out anything they thought would turn the tide of the war. magical armor that possessed whoever wore it to fight and fight, mutated a dog species into giant fuck off direwolves, mutated not!dwarf prisoners into not!goblins, created magical super weapons and everything in between. in the end though, the city fell, everything that the elves and not!dwarves could get their hands on they killed, and the few survivors fled across the sea while even fewer were basically put on reserves and have stayed there since
>>
>>50253475
Okay, I'll bite, where'd your owlbear come from?

They finally created man after much experimentation in synchronising the five elements, the perfect creature to inhabit and perceive creation from the inside, aesthetically pleasing to the divine eye, pious enough to seek an understanding of the divine and worship it, and with the ingenuity and viciousness necessary to survive in the world.

With mankind being the new hotness, the gods needed to dispose of the old. Which was a difficult prospect. Their civilisations were all pretty advanced, huge and thousands of years old, they'd just kill any humans that encroached on them.

So the divines formulated a curse against each, targeting vulnerabilities in the very elements they were predominantly constructed of, to try and level the playing field.

The Crows were cursed to only ever follow the will of one, and at that, one who changes places based on murder, cursing their civilisation to a maelstrom of violence and internal backstabbing. They were the weakest to start with.

The Butterflies were cursed to be nomads and wander the Earth unceasingly, stressing their fragile physiology and making the libraries of magical knowledge they accumulated nearly worthless.

The Hippos were cursed to lose their minds to a maelstrom of rage at the sight of other creatures, disrupting their peaceful, meditative society and driving it to grief.

The Crabs were bound to an impossible task of drowning the land, causing their great numbers to die constantly pursuing a madman's crusade.

The Goats were cursed to never be able to build another standing structure, dooming them to live out the savage twilight of their civilisation in the decaying ruins of the great structures they once saturated the land with.

In short, all the monsters are just earlier, failed attempts at making humans that the Gods got salty about and reverted into savages that have no choice but to be dangerous monstrosities.
>>
All life started in trees. At first, animated life walked the earth as nomads. From those, some were trapped under a rock and became wizards. Others fell into a fire and became knights. A wolf snatched some seeds of her own and made the common folk. Even the ocean was populated in time.
Desiring an essence of its own, flesh entangled the spaces above and below the world. Animals trapped by flesh’s nerves parodied men. Tools and inventions used to pierce the nerves turn on their users. The living have entered the nerves in dreams. The survivors are ignore of their accomplishment and the failures are entangled in flesh forever.

As a last note, imbalancing the elemental humours of a human can cause them to mutate into some kind of monster or other.

As it stands, one antagonist has already used this to create a race of Ents that reproduce by biting humans and infecting them with a disease that saturates their body with Earth element until they start becoming a tree. The only way to stall it is to cut off from one of Earth's constituent elements. Which is pretty difficult, humans can only live perpetually without light, and they get sick from that after a while.

The high fantasy setting? Naturally occurring beings made by the gods, mostly, though there's some fae/eldritch beings around, and the undead are caused by necrostorms that are caused by an undead god who never died.

The modern setting, they're all the offspring of baba yaga's daughters.

It depends on the monster, but one of the earliest monsters created in my setting were minotaurs, so here's their creation as explained by one of the holy scriptures in my setting, hence the idiosyncratic writing style. Worth noting is that at this point in the creation myth the physical bodies of things, and their thoughts are closely linked. Jor-Ek is basically God, Faberkin are the first humans.

Some of them traveled east, towards the lands of Bor and Bur, and they implored to them to aid them, for they now had to toil to plant and sow, for only the Druids still held Jor-Ek's blessing. Bor and Bur who had been at war with the beings of Yt for the longest time, and of all Guardians were the most accustomed to battle said, "If you wish not toil you must strike down those that drove you out.", and they said, "Go now back to from whence you came but take with you metals of the earth, for we have learned from Yt". And they gave them metals and said to them, "And take the fires from the beings of Vatas and smelt your metals, and so you can shape it into weapons, which you shall use to take back your land." And they accepted these gifts and they made again westward, so thus they became the people known as Utvalas. With their new knowledge their thought changed, and they changed in shape, no longer fair but strong and broad, with gray skin like stone and hooves for feet. Like the animals of Jor-Ek they were, half-Yak and half-Faberkin. The Utvalas went as a horde back to from whence they came, as Bor and Bur had said, and they waged war against them, killing many and taking harvests to feed themselves. For many years this carried on, and so it was that the Utvalas lost their knowledge of the plants and vegetation, and were forced to hunt the animals of Jor-Ek and take with force the harvests of others.

From the mechosystem that still exists in unpopulated areas.
You've got nanoprobes that are like plankton, and other bioforms like herbivores, carnivores and parasites. Every now and then something crosses the distance between the mechosystem and the arcologies. Can be anything from robot vermin to a stainless steel tiger, or a group of smarter bots looking for salvage.

Some come from early failed attempts ad instilling life to inanimate objects, other are the rare fertile results of a wizard's experiment, and some end up following eldritch gods to this new land to see what it's like.

Majority, though, results from a madgod getting at the tools to make life and deciding to see what he can come up with. It got so out of hand, the latest addition is wasabooms, wasabi-shaped mushroom people who have to suicide bomb to propagate. They were intended as an evil race, but they rebelled near immediately, becoming the kindest race out there.

The twist is that the madgod is infact the life god's insane girlfriend, who decided her darling Life-kun needed a vacation and decided to take over the task herself to provide said vacation. I'm planning on springing a quest where you reinstate the life god and depose his gf on my players.

Monsters as they know they come from the corruption of organisms due to magic that mutates and changes creatures, or creates them entirely themselves. As such, most monsters can be found in the Great Aethor Forests to the west where the separation between this realm and the otherrealm is at its thinnest.

What is the difference between a monster and a dangerous animal?
>>
>>50275602
I was thinking of a complex way of classifying based on ecosystem invasiveness, malign intellect, or some sort of otherworldly property, but fuck it.

If the average man with a spear has a decent chance at killing it in a 1 on 1 fair fight, animal. Else, monster.
>>
That turns a lot of animals into monsters. Hippos, big cats...
>>

>hippos
>not chaotic evil monsters brought here by the gods to punish our sins

A big cat is definitely up there, but not monstrous by and means. There are a few African tribes who send their males to kill one as a rite of passage to manhood.

The Romans loved to watch Gladiators fighting them so much they contributed to their extinction in Europe and had to go to Africa to get more.

Beastlike humanoid monsters come from the setting's "original sin" which was a sort of cannibalistic act that led to their creation from early demigods.

Things like slimes are primordial, and have existed since long before even the gods took on human shapes - my setting's timeline is as ancient as the IRL earth.

Dragons and the like evolved from ancient dinosaurs warped and guided by pre-human fire gods. Often they were tasked to be guardians of omportant and sacred items and places, and the hoarding instinct grew from that.

that's pretty close to how I have it in several of my settings, although said entity, the Mother of Wyrms is only half of the parentage, the other half is a similarly ancient and primordial demiurge, although where Mother of Wyrms represents monsters of the flesh, Father of Storms is much more elemental in nature, representing the fury of the storm and the might of an erupting volcano, Dragons are the purest of their offspring, representing a perfect balance between their progenitors' aspects(most monsters lean towards one parent or the other)

A certain mineral with variably magical properties. Astrologues speculate that its power waxes and wanes due to its reaction with truly vast quantities of itself which they believe must be concentrated upon certain celestial bodies far away from the planet in which the setting is... set.

The transit of these bodies causes changes in the power of the mineral, sometimes over years, sometimes over millennia.
It can vary from 'entertaining when powdered and snorted' to 'if you live above a deposit deep beneath the earth, your children may be hideously warped'.

The latter example explains where 'monsters' come from. They are the degenerate offspring of animals and people.

There are 2 kinds of monsters

Firstly there are the old ones, who are basically generic big wise immortal (but not invincible) and extremely powerful creatures who have been around longer than humans. These are very few and generally stay away from each other.
Secondly you have the smaller ones that inhabit the world. They are a mix of natural animals (lions that have evolved to have an armoured hide) and demons that are summoned (demons are not inherently good or bad, but mostly exist to fulfill the needs of the summoner.)

Demons that are summoned and fulfill their task seemingly vanish. But are actually (unbeknown to everyone) being set free on the world. (This served as the second part in the campaign. Post killing an old one who had ab emperor assassinated and then replaced with an fake to control the empire)

From the emotions of mankind.
Like, if a person is negative they'll spawn aggressive monsters. Likewise, if a person is positive they'll spawn docile monsters that can be eaten.
The more negativity, the stronger, durable and more aggressive the monsters spawn. The more positive, the more nutritious, delicious and bigger the docile monsters.

Most monsters aren't any different from normal animals. What is considered a monster and what an animal isn't really well defined, but generally if it's big and dangerous, it's probably getting called a monster. Familiarity also plays into it: a person who has never seen an elephant would probably consider it a monster, while somebody who lives in a land where elephants are common would just think of it as another animal, albeit a very big one.

There's some "unnatural" monsters that aren't just normal animals. Dragon-kin (dragons and other related creatures) are all descendants of a primordial dragon-god slain by another god in ancient times, and are more like demigods than mortal beings (actual dragons are closest to their progenitor, and are essentially fully magical creatures that can't exist without magic to sustain them, while their progeny is progressively more removed from their divine ancestry and thus more "mundane").
There's also voidspawn, which are beings outside reality that can be summoned by mages, or in rare cases break into reality where magic has weakened the barrier that would keep them out, and demons which can't manifest directly in the world but can possess mortals.

It's not. It's heathenry. A heretic is someone who has deviated from the true religion, a heathen is someone who, potentially, has simply not yet been reached by missionaries.
>>
>>50278192
True. The proper terminology is:
Heresy: a member of the same religion as you holds views that don't fit established religious canon.
Heterodoxy: a person follows a different religion that is closely related to yours; for example Christians and Jews worship the same god and share a lot of religious canon, but belong to different religions.
Heathenry: a person follows a religion unrelated to your own.

>>
>>50253038
From their monster moms and pops. A lot are sapient and integrated into society, like that friendly neighborhood harpy that delivers your mail. Though, being monsters, their breeding habits are diverse. An alraune will plant a seed while a slime undergoes mitosis, for example.
>>
>>50280488
The dwarves believe people came from space (or the planes, legends vary), and consider them to be much like a plague of locusts. On a dwarf timescale, human civilizations don't last very long, and you've got cycles of hordes and bandits intermittent with cycles of peace.
>>
>>50253038
Depends on the 'monster'. Most fantastic beasts come from the Auld Wold where the the barrier between our world and the Fae Wild is thin.

Others are created by wizards, or are natural creatures like Ogres and Giants.
