OP has no idea what he's doing Edition

Old thread, maybe? >>50159577

Hold up, this don't match the plans on file...
>>
>>50184198
>The OPs made in the apartment complex are invariably shitty and don't explain that the Thread is for shooting out ideas for a creepy/comfy apartment complex in a very loose canon.
>Its like those Shitty Spaceships threads but for a 2spooky apartment complex

>one day the apartment is full of balloons. They each play an old memory on their surface, things from your life. Poppingthem does no harm, but those that float out a window or get trashed when they deflate are lost from your mind, possibly forever.

Here's the photo we've used as the exterior basis for the thread. I noticed that the open-air shop on the left is actually on the second floor, and perhaps on top of another shop. Since the Chinese Takeout doesn't need that much space and is canonically on the first floor, is this an open-air bar on top of the bodega or video store?
>>
>>50184522
Probably the break room for tenants with the coffee machine? Seems like a good place for an open air area.
>>
>>50184522
Christ that looks comfy. In a shitty way.
>>
>>50184557
So, that's the Lobby/Common Room? I'm down with that. Odd that they'd use a damask wallpaper on the wall when it's an open-air area. Perhaps the Lobby wasn't always open air? Something happened there...
>>
>The apartment actually has a few resident wizards, warlocks, druids, shamans, witches, sorcerers, enchanters, seers, soothesayers, magi, elementalists and conjurers in the building, pretty much all of them living on floors that you're pretty sure are made up. Such as Floor 10 3/4
>Since you don't really see what floors they live on you don't really see them all to much, unless they're doing battle or studying with the Cult of The Washingroom, but you can hear their raves in the early hours of the night, but ONLY in your bedroom

>bugs tend to cluster around you, someday while visiting your sister will freak out becuase there is a giant ass spider crawling in your shoulder, you turn your head and there it is old berta, you grab a fly from the wall near you and feed it to her. you sister doesnt visit you as often any more

These people are willing to share their power and knowledge with you, but for a cost. You cover their rent for the month.

Remember, rent is the first of the month, or a task for the community. This means you might have to undertake TWO side-quests for a month.

Sounds only in bedroom probably means that parties actually orgies. Cos you know. Magickal symbolism.

>There are almost no children living in the building. Sure, they show up, but few of them ever go into a room to sleep, and it seems like no family there ever really has children.
>Either they're expecting forever and ever, they move somewhere else to give birth, or the child seems to have grown up over the course of a single night. The parents don't seem to have aged a day.
>There is one man whose room is regularly home to children. If you see a child in the building, chances are that they'll run up to the man who lives on the floor with no number.
>For all you can find out, he's childless and has never had a child, being a kind but nervous balding man in his fifties with a penchant for coffee with a splash of rum, cheap cigarillos and tweed suits.

There's no canon, don't pretend anything is canonical.
>>
>>50185160
There's a hard and a soft canon if you want my opinion.

>Hard Canon: the oriental feel of The Apartment, the shops (Icky's Chophouse and The Bodega) the landlady, the dead girl across the hall, The Man in The Fancy Suit, the courtyard/s, the labyrinthine basement, and the generally helpful attitude of the tenants and The Apartment.

>Soft Canon: The interior of The Apartment (and the exterior to some extent, what with all the roofs and the multitudinous entrances and exits of The Aprtment) defies any logical ordering, layout, or number of floors; this allows there to be more tenants than you'd ever think there would be room for.

My opinion is probably shit though just have fun and make up interesting and cozy spooky things.
>>
>>50184522
Judging from the lack of a railing and the way the light falls, it looks more like an indoor lobby with full-sized windows.

Which makes sense: why would anyone want an open-air lobby in a bad neighborhood full of air pollution and noise?

>this also infuriates local paranormal investigators, who are constantly thwarted by the nature of the Building from learning anything about the nature of the Building.

Locations (mine semi head canon)
The Building or Apartments.
Main source of weirdness in the neighborhood. Seemingly shitty, yet homely and comfy. Some saying have a soul in it.

The Condo.
A high-rise of highly successful businesses and apartments. Reeks of class, big money and hard earned success. Yet it's cold, efficient and sucking away your very own soul from you. Modern "art" and clean, minimalistic looks of apartments and offices doesn't help either. In fact, it make you worn out even faster. You must wear a suit all the time. But don't worry, you'll get used to it. Everyone does.

Co-op.
It used to be a heart of the Community. Now it's dead and on it's rotting corpse rising a new life, like maggots and other scavengers. There is nothing left in this ruins but a misery.

Housing Projects.
They are shitty as Apartments and soulless as Condo, but doesn't have a money and power they have. They already killed Co-op, and they are waiting for a sign of weakness to strike down another victim and devour it. They are numerous and faceless as their tenants.
>>
>One day as you are walking home, some thugs start following you
>You try to ignore them, but they keep taiing you
>Seeing the apartment doors nearing, you run for it
>They follow you inside
>You run down the hall and take a left
>They also run down the hall, turn left, and look confused.
>They don't see the hall you took, just a wall
>They try to turn back, but see only another wall
>Panicking, they bang on the walls, until one wall turns into an open door that leads to an alleyway

Probably, since she's supposed to readily admit that people are right to keep her door locked.

Proabably.

Everyone is adamant that the Girl should never be let out. Including, usually, herself.

I think I remember something in the first thread about how if you look through the peephole, the room looks torn up, like something violent occurred.

There has been some posts that suggest that the Building is the battleground for a war, which is why rent is the first of the month. During that day, those that pay with the day are fighting in the war. As you become more accustomed to the urban unease, you may begin to remember.

How do I come out of each battle relatively unscathed and rather rested, you ask? There's a bunch of wizards, druids, shamans, elementalists, exorcists, priests, cultists, arcanists, ghosts, golems, mad scientists, living paintings, transmogrified criminal animals, a Schroeder's cat-as-a-girl, and an apartment building with a will of its own and the means to bend reality. I don't gotta 'splain nothin'.
>>

>>
>>50190313
The Building's entire initial purpose was to be a recruiter for this war. It takes care of its tenants because any harm coming on experienced recruits while away from this vast cosmological battlefield would be counterproductive to the purpose of fighting The Only War That Matters.

It still does that recruiting thing, but ultimately, it's trying to settle into its role as a home for the weird here on Earth. The Suits want it back in the game full-time.

I gues its better to have mystery about what building, Men and other thing actually is. >>
>>50190884
Kinda agree, kinda don't. The Only War shouldn't be the focus of the plot, so it being a recruiter AND battleground is kinda too much. This being one of many places where the battle is raged, just because it is a nexus of weird. That feels better. The story doesn't revolve around it, it is just one of the aspects of the place. The players can pursue this plotline if they wish, or they can follow completely different stories. Each of these stories interlace to form a complete tapestry of the Urban Unease setting.

That should be a uniting theme in the narratives: Don't try to win. Don't try to understand it. This is not the focus, this is not the deepest truth, it is just one of a billion paths you can follow into your ultimate goal: Finding where you belong.
>>
>>50190972
> Mage the Apartment

Ok I chuckled.
>>
>>50190949
Fair enough. It struck me as a good justification for all the weird shit. If there's one thing that I keep catching wiff of here, it's kind of a Fallen London, Sunless Sea vibe. There's weird shit going on and deeper truths to find, even if a lot of it is fairly normal day-to-day stuff in this locale. It's weird to the people just coming in, it gets comfy as time goes on but even when that happens, there's always gotta be something worse going on beneath the surface that some players or groups might take an interest in.

Playing it up as JUST Comfy But Unnerving strikes me as a disservice to where the concept could go, but it's cool either way. I'm just brainstorming, that's all we're doing. Spitballing to see what sticks, no problems.

>>50190884
You, sir, can bite me.

Anyways, new plot hooks.

>There's a hole in your wall that wasn't there this morning. Looking inside, you can see a mirror. And you're fairly sure there's something moving in the background, behind your reflection.

>Your homepage on your computer keeps getting redirected to some weird website about conspiracy theories. You reset it to the usual site, but every time you open another tab, it takes you back to that conspiracy site. There's a lot of pages on urban exploration there, including some addresses in your neighborhood. The Building is not among them.

>Someone keeps jacking your coffee and replacing it with hot chocolate. You like hot chocolate, but seriously, what the fuck. You put it in the cabinet, then close the cabinet. Then there's hot chocolate where there was coffee. The brand isn't in any language you recognize. It tastes good, but you really want your fucking coffee.
>>
>>50190236
Could this also be the girl in the mirror and the Midnight Webcam? She sometimes just gets her jollies by creeping on you.

>>50191272
You don't need coffee grounds in your apartment because the only coffee maker in the building is the one in the lobby. It cannibalizes any other coffee machine brought in and gains new features. Gonna use instant coffee? Son, that's cute, have some hot chocolate. You're too young to drink with the big boys.

But seriously, that coffee maker has to be nigh on its own Starbucks setup by now.

Like the Men in the Suits the Only War That Matters should be kept to a side-story. One regular "Vet" with a couple buddy's he brings round every so often.

If you need some kind of solid facts. The war has been fought to a standstill. Both sides drew back, so now the vet is trapped in limbo. Knowing that eventually he'll be called back to the front once conflict begins again.

Also adding Painting Girl to the overall roster of known characters. I would say keep her secondary, like the pregnant lady/couple
>>
Wow! The fifth floor seems to have a higher concentration of weird! I'm building a doc collecting all this (marking conflicts, but keeping both).

The fifth floor has five entries, plus the Werewolves and the Vet live there. Oddly, we have an entry for the Six-and-a-Halfth Floor, but not the sixth or seventh, minus some tenants. We know those floors are there, and are easily accessible, but nothing seems to happen on 6 or 7.

I almost want to imagine that the red-eyed girl in the paintings was created, in Pygmalion-fashion, by an elderly former tenant who was a painter that paid his rent in various pieces of art that still hang around the building. His apartment, which became the girl's apartment after he passed away, has a floor to ceiling mural covering every wall, allowing the painted girl to present the illusion of being able to interact with the world around her. As previously mentioned, she can also jump to any of her creator's paintings where they hang around the building, and is trying to earn a degree in art history.

Does it not strike you that you're the one trying to make a canon out of it being low-key simply for it to be "cool and mysterious"?
There is no canon.
When there is no canon, there should be no one telling people what they're allowed to put in and what not, because that's canon.
The building is a huge fount of possibilities, and everything or nothing in these threads could be true. In fact, that's the main fundament of this idea - that there's only a structure to things for long enough to confound you, and that multiple things can be true or present at once even if they should be mutually exclusive.
You're the one acting like you just got elected for IRC admin. People dump what they want here, and other people take what they want. Your mini-modding only squelches good ideas and keeps people dependent on power-mongering namefags to decide what the project and its rules should be.

Pretty nice history there.
I was thinking an architectural degree myself, Painting Girl being enamored with the concept of 3D spaces and structures. Maybe she's smart and driven enough for a double major.

Though being limited to her fathers works would make adding new paintings for her quite dificult.
>>
>>50194519
Nonsense, you just need to ask around, perhaps that tattoo artist with the clockwork hands and glass eyes?

The dead girl might know more, or perhaps you can ask one of the dogs? the displacement, however temporary, of souls is something they would know
>>
>>50194519
Maybe that's why she's learning art history. To broaden her horizons and thus allow herself to manifest in a wider variety of paintings and forms of art.

>It wasn't just her father's skill as an artist that brought her to life, but the magical painter's toolkit he possessed.

>This magical toolkit was stolen on the night that the man died, perhaps by his killer, and has been missing ever since.

>It becomes the PCs' job to discover the truth about what happened and track down those magical painter's tools.

>Curiously, in their search the PCs begin to discover sad, anguished, graffiti around the building that appears strangely alive...

If you walk the stairs to the 11th floor, then take five steps back down and walk the rest of the way up, you end on a roof without the coop, with ash falling from the sky and and burning ruins all around the building.

Well shit, looks like the move silent hill version

There's a door on floor seven with no handle or peephole. Tenants have been trying to pull the door open for years to see what's inside, but even the strongest men can't get the door to budge.

It's actually a push door.
>>
>>50195421
Why would people try to pull a door with no handle? The natural thing to do in that situation is push it.

We tried to call for a dentist several times but for some reason the line always goes dead halfway through the call.

Must be something wrong in his phone, since he asks the caller to repeat himself a lot.
> I'm sorry, you want me to take a look at what?
> I'm sorry, how many teeth?
> Why are you calling me again?

I guess the problem's getting worse. I tried to call him just now twice and the line went dead right at the beginning. I barely managed to say the address.
>>
>>50195579
that's the unnerving part, people who are close to the door never think to push despite it being so obvious. Afterwards they'll chide themselves for lacking common sense and go back to try again, but the moment they're close to the door they just keep pulling.

All good ideas, I just think that 'artist makes art living in art and studies art so can art into art' is a bit much.

And yet I have this idea about another tenant that does mixed media art pieces, like a painting of a shoulder length glove from a fancy ballgown, sitting on a table. Yet the open end hangs "out" of the painting, a bit of actual cloth glued to the canvas with paint, and if you stick your hand in, you can reach all the way into it, moving your arm within the painting.
>>
>The building has a protective streak when it comes to tennants dealing with nontennants, but when it comes to tennants dealing with eachother...well, sometimes the building is just a building...
>Getting evicted takes some effort, but it has happened in the past. But for the most part tennants sort things out like most folks in the inner city, in the parking lot, abandoned halls and rooms, and in the basement
>There's actually a thriving black market in the complex, weapons, drugs, animals, hired "help", "hired" help, medicine, entertainment, aftermarket parts, whatever you need or want can be found somewhere in the apartment. You've heard tales of two halls where the floors and walls were taken out to create a huge open air bazaar. You think you may have seen it from the interior(?) courtyard

>Her father's name was Art.

More seriously, I do see what you mean, I think. It's too much and almost makes too much "sense" for a setting that's supposed to be a little more surreal.
>>
>>50196154
This is a curious idea. But to what end? As it stands this is a novel notion but nothing more. Although if you want a plot hook.

His magnum opus is an exquisite still life of a painter's pallet and brushes. A gift he received as a younger man from a stranger. Nobody knows it, not even he. But the Painted Girl's father hid his tools inside a painting, least they be misused

Alternatively, building off my idea. If Painted girl wants out it's only neighbourly to assist. Que possession vibes- she'll give your body back, but never quite how you left it. You can always taste blood afterwards- and your sleep is troubled for days afterward
>>
>>50196614
>to what end?
I just imagine the Painting Girl being excited at finding there's a way to interact with people beyond talking across the borders of her world. Also introduces a new tenant.

Maybe give them growing feelings for one another, with Painting Girl treating you as an older sibling for advice about her crush.

>When you first moved to the Apartment you kept getting lost. The maps of the building never matched, and the directions the tenants gave you changed from day to day. Eventually, you got so fed up that you made a trail of string connecting your apartment to the Laundy Room, the Entrance, the Elevator, the Stairwells, etc.

>You woke up wrapped in a cocoon of string, hanging from a spiderweb of string, in what looked like a conference room.

Just an idea, I had been thinking about since romancing the dead girl was talked about.

She doesn't want to be let out and has her door chained up, because she's not in there, it's an empty room.
>>
>>50204451
That is one possibility. I had theorized earlier that she was a Schrodinger's Cat. Inside that room, she is both very alive and very dead, and very aware of both states. You open the door, you observe the room, the truth happens.

Except the event that caused her state happened long ago. Since then, she has acted as if both of the outcomes were happening, because they were. Once you open that door, you have determined the outcome that happened all those years ago. This fundamentally alters her every action from the point of her incident on. She is no longer in both states, she is in one. By opening that door, you have changed the past, and you can't ever take it back. But, since you have now determined an outcome, you no longer have the relationship you had with her. That changes the quantum states at the time that you would have observed her, which means... Paradox.

She is Schrodinger's Cat. That door seals a temporal causality paradox. It doesn't matter if she's alive or dead because if you ever open that door you will toss the universe in a blender and hit frappe. And that will make her very, very dead.
>>
>>50202582
I don't. Can anyone explain?

To anyone not familiar with the concept, it could basically be described as "Welcome to Night Vale, re-envisioned by Hayao Miyazaki."

There were a couple of threads a couple years back about paranormal niceties that resulted in the invention of Merlin Township, a strange town populated by monsters, eldritch beings and plain old nice people. It was a place where the biggest shadowy conspiracy was the town's party planning committee, the local radio host was a wise and folksy phantom, and where visitors might learn something about themselves before moving on.

While our Apartment Building does seem to be somewhat darker in tone, I would say that it and Merlin Township are sister-concepts in that they are both strange, supernatural settings in which community and finding a place where you belong are the main themes.

I'd like to think the building is actually several buildings built upon layline nexuses with non euclidian geometry and numerologically significant architecture atop native burial grounds/pet cemetaries/Mason or Templar temples/the cite of witch burnings/foundations of a haunted house (in a few American cases all of the above) and completed when the stars aligned, that sort of melded into a single nexus and gathers hoodoo like a fishnet
>>
>>50211718
I like to think that the building is really haunted. Like, so haunted that there are ghosts haunting ghosts which haunt ghosts who themselves haunt ghosts. The building keeps changing because Geometry is haunted. Animals become sentient because Evolution is haunted. Nonliving things come to life because God is haunted. Yes, I know it's basically saying "some asshole wizard did it," but it seems kind of funny.
>>
>>50212195
I'm going with "it just is". Everyone has a theory, but there's no way to prove any of them and not even the Suits or the Building or the things you fight on the first of the month know the actual origins.
>>
There's an old man who is legally a First Nations tribesman. Everything is total crap for him, nothing in life goes his way. He says that it's alright. He stays because his ancestors are buried under the property. Obviously, players freak out because "well that's why this place is so messed up".

If asked to speak on his tribe, he says that it was almost wiped out by spirits beyond the ken of mortal understanding. It was their punishment for desecrating the Building by burying their dead there.

The Indian burial ground isn't haunting the Building. The Building haunted the Indian burial ground.

>>
>>50213773
...Wait, what happens to people who die in the building?

Can people actually die in the building? There's definitely ghosts, and it would be logical to assume that they are of people who died in the building, but I'm not sure the building would just let the people in it die.

>Want to know why there's so many ghosts? The building won't let go of tennants that easily.
>>
>>50214279
That's what I imagine. A lot of the Tenants could well be people that died in there. Dead Girl obviously, maybe the Painted Girl too, only living on in her canvas world. The various Vets may just be war memories themselves, and there has been mention of zombies and a ghost family.

Dying is widely comsidered the biggest change a creature will have to go through in its life.

Since this means nearly half of our tenants must deal with this issue at some point, we figured that it wouldn't be very nice if they ended up homeless at the same time.

In addition, since we don't discriminate against those tenants who have never been alive yet, nor those who never will, we're unlikely to do so against those that have dropped that particular habit.

Any measuring implement used in the building will be absolutely correct, but will not give the reading you want. I've been working at a homebrew system that uses a CYOA for chargen. Starts with Profession, then day job, background, and Introduction. This will give them a list of skills and a certain amount of resource points to work with. From there, they use d20 rolls to assign apartment quirks to their apartment, items they start with, and connections they've made. All of these can be augmented by spending Eldritch Coins that they are given at the start. RP would use D6 Success-based rolls (Roll of 5 or 6 is a success, tally up successes to beat TN or opponent rolls, going over TN results in critical successes, Roll more >50% 1's, you get a critfail).

You're pretty sure the twelfth floor is home to a pantheon of forgotten pagan deities from an obscure and, frankly pop-culture aware, mythology. Each apartment of the floor has a small stone altar beside it. The doors do not respond to knocks. You must make a sacrifice on the altar in order to call the tenant out. Fortunately, they each accept various forms of soda and snack foods.

Akilostro, god of python (no, not pythons, python), accepts cheese puffs and Tab soda.

Narual, goddess of whistling, accepts Cheerwine and Ritz Bits (the peanut butter kind are her favorite).

Think of it like walking into a basement like when you were a kid. The lights only cover the stairs, and the basement seems to go on forever into the inky blackness even though you know its ten feet from the stairs to the wall. Except this basement actually does go on for forever. Or, at least, as close to forever as you can get.

>Someone set up a brewery in a room by a stairwell. You're not entirely sure what they're brewing. They just assure you that it's "the good stuff" and that, since it is technically not alcoholic, no laws against it have been made.

>Paranormal investigators periodically come to the apartment.

For an coffee alternative, Chinese Takeout owner is offering a staggering amount of chinese teas of all kinds - black, white, yellow, red, uluns, you name it. They all authentically and certified from finest Asian plantations. The price is steep, but taste is always exceptional, no matter what you buy.

Just don't try to buy or bring a tea bags into Apartment - they all will taste like burnt hot chocolate.

I've done a simple system to play that with friends, just posting it here.
https://spit.mixtape.moe/view/0c9afce9

Most of it is "let the dm wing it". I've just got three stats to define characters a little bit and one point spending mechanism to allow the players to feel cool occasionally.
Also I put a mechanic on how you remember rumors and advice because that allows you to start with players about two weeks after them moving in instead of needing 'bout a week of slow play until they figure out the most basic stuff, while letting plenty more opportunities to discover stuff yourself.

I think the building needs other tenants who are odd but not supernatural to feel actually like just a nexus of weirdness and not like a moster hotel where youa re the sole human.

His appartment is full of books and clockwork stuff laying around on the floor or board desks. He sleeps on a futon. He's got a really neat flatscreen tv but the screen is cracked like someone threw something on it.
He only have three food items in his whole appartment: breakfast cereals, japanese whiskey and chinese beer.

All the apartments in the building have the exact same measurements, and always will. This means that you have to enact a change to every apartment if you want it to still be there in the morning

Every other Wednesday, you find ghost riders in the kitchen. Sometimes one stops to talk to you, giving you valuable advice.

Some of the upper floors (floor 237 for instance) can be accessed through the elevator but not through the stairwell. Most of the time at least, but if you run 3/8s of the way up the stairwell between floors 3 and 4 and then run back down, you will end up on the fifth floor. The floor you end up on depends on how many times you do it. the furthest anyone has managed is floor 405 which is literally just a floor surrounded by the ideas of walls, a ceiling, doors, and Dame Helen Mirren. No one is in a hurry to head back there.
>>

floor 300 is home to a collection of soldiers from many medieval eras. They all seem perfectly fine with one another's presence, though are all convinced that the apartment is owned by their homelands. They are also convinced that they are speaking the languages of their homelands. This had lead to some awkward, but quite hilarious, moments

I saw that there was a guy kinda like this in the earlier threads. Maybe they sold something very important to the pawnshop on the first floor and this is the result. Like he sold his "place" (meaning apartment) or some shit like that and he sold something he wasn't intending to sell cause phrasing
