Neocon Evangelist Christians usually are very fond of Israel.

Mostly because they believe that it's necessary for Israel to exist, the Dome of the Rock to be destroyed, and the Third Temple built in its place, for Jesus to return and bring about the end times (at which point any Jews who don't immediately repent and become Christian will go straight to Hell with all the other unbelievers). And partially because they really really hate Muslims..

>>
You guys laugh at this stuff. I was a kid in the late 70s through mid-80s. I saw actual organized church events to burn D&D books and melt down miniatures. I had a friend almost get kicked out of catholic school for having books and dice in his backpack. His family had to get together a hefty "donation" to keep him enrolled and allowed to attend church. I saw protests outside book, hobby and game stores till the stores took the D&D stuff off the shelves and sold it from behind the counter to people over 18 with IDs. It seems crazy as hell now but back then churches had people all scared and riled up over D&D. I didn't live in the bible belt either......30 miles outside of Philadelphia in the burbs.

>>
>>49938956
>>49938877
Those are plausible theories, I can think of two more.
1. He had done illustration for D&D or some other fantasy game, and wanted revenge for some slight, perhaps even a sincere belief that he had been doing the devils work.

2. He thought that using the same imagery would taint the D&D product, make it seem more authentically satanic. In this theory his use of the images was insincere, to make the product seem more dangerous than it is.

I mean, they are, just not for the reasons that Jack asserts.

They're evil for the same reason Jack was evil. They try to manipulate people's morality away from just being good to your fellow man, into whatever they believe is right without any putting any thought into WHY it might be right beyond simply 'my book says so'.
That and also because they justify doing whatever they want, because they think of themselves as the good guy, so anything they have to do that might be questionable is fine because it's just for the greater good in the end.
>>
>>49937677
Really it started out as this really obscure holiday were people would pray for the souls of those who have passed on, but at the turn of the century a lot of kids used the holiday as an excuse to cause mischief and mayhem. So this one woman in Midwest america, who was tired of having her garden smashed to bits every October 31st, so she organized this big parade through town where the kids would dress up, parade through the streets as households along the route passed-out sweets. It worked like a charm, the kids were all too busy getting free treats to go cause mischief and soon other towns began to host similar events in their towns and next thing you know BOOM! a major holiday was born.

Aside from the general macabre theme of the holiday, there really is little-to-no religious significance to the Holiday, don't know why people keep thinking that it does...

Yeah, fucking Catholics. I can't believe the pope would just go around washing people's feet and stuff. Who does he think he is? He is the true harbinger of evil. Yeah, very evil. The incarnation of it.

ISIS? Intelligence agencies? Communists? Misguided. Pope? Evil. So fuck evil, man. I wish he'd just watch some amazingatheist, it would take maybe 5 minutes for him to realize he has been Lawful Evil this entire time. Truly the worst man on earth and sociopaths have nothing on him.
>>
Behold, some of the few tracts that even Chick thought went too far, and that were recalled.

"Lisa" tells the story of a lazy porn addict of a father who rapes his daughter with the aid of his neighbor, then gets his soul saved by Jesus. It's a pretty evil story even by Chick standards.

http://www.boolean-union.com/Chick/Lisa/Lisa.htm

In "Wounded Children", little David is turned gay (by Satan) after he reads pornography at a young age. Was this perhaps recalled because the gays were too hot? I have no idea.

>>49937654
>Captain Phallus, New Age Healer Extraordinaire

Thanks for that colorful strawman. Very seasonal.

The current pope is great, he's a credit to his faith and I wish more people were like him. The previous one? Telling people in Africa who he knew would listen to him not to use condoms because it wasn't an effective protection against AIDS?

That guy was evil. He was knowingly responsible for people dying when he could've stopped it. As evil as actual murderers who do the deed themselves? Probably not. I wouldn't put him on the same scale as ISIS or North Korea or Nazis. But he wasn't a good dude.

I could go on. I'm not going to.
>>
>>49940355
>Was this perhaps recalled because the gays were too hot? I have no idea.
It was recalled because it was based on a true story (the "David" character became a fundie priest), hence all the accurate homo detail, but before it was published the guy killed himself due to gay angst. That kinda spiked the effecticveness of the message.

Just wanted to point out that like most Chick Tracts that focus on scientific issues, "Big Daddy" has been altered several times over the years. I have hardcopies of this tract where the professor only has three basic concepts of evolution on the chalkboard. The stuff about whale dicks was also recently added. In the past, it was about a living sea creature that supposedly was tested by scientists to be 14,000 years old, thus proving that scientific methods of dating objects were fraudulent.

Humorously, they never amended the part about protons and electrons.

I'm White. I grew up in a predominantly white area. Mostly Catholic, Protestant and a few other flavors of Christianity. At the time black people weren't allowed out on the street after dark in the town I grew up in. If they were then they had a police escort till they went to a residence or left town. IIRC, we only had about a half dozen black residents on the "bad" low rent 3 blocks of town by the river.

C.S. Lewis and Tolkien were referred to as Satanic authors in the very first version of the track, until people pointed out they were pretty Christian; especially Lewis.

And aren't ALL the tracks with black protagonists completely redrawn to make them look less like they were commissioned by the Klan?

Yup. There have been lots of modernizations over the years.

It's one of the best bad movies in a long time, like Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas.

I vastly prefer the ClickHole version:

>A college professor was addressing his history class. He began his lecture by saying, “Let’s get one thing straight: God is not real; the only God is Obama and the powerful female clitoris.” One student raised his hand and stood up and said, “Sir, I’m sorry to interrupt, but where I come from we don’t talk bad about God, because he’s our best friend.” The professor then said, “What are you, an idiot? Shut up, idiot. This is college and we hate Christ. Who do you think you are, Christian?” The student responded by picking up his bag, putting on his cowboy hat and punching the teacher in the face. “My name is Sgt. Johnathan Gunderson. And your plan won’t work, Goltar.” Because when the sergeant punched the professor, he punched the mask off of his face, revealing the praying mantis head underneath. “You’ve figured out my evil plan this time, Sgt. Gunderson. But as long as there are aborted fetuses for me to feast upon, I will always be stronger than America!” He then flew away to his lair. Share this status if you want to save America and end abortion.

I always love this. It's always some bullshit where the professor is presented a bunch of strawmen arguments and faulty reasoning along with blatant misunderstanding of a concept from a student and then just goes full Phoenix Wright-style meltdown when he's "proven" wrong.

More like his insane parents fucked him up. I had friends from ultra religious churches and most of them ended up with bad drug problems. I had one buddy whose parents made him go to their church to have hands laid on him by the congregation while they prayed away his demons while he lived under their roof. He was a drunk, a coke head and he had sex. Nobody asked questions like why he got beaten weekly even if he did nothing wrong because "Spare the rod, spoil the child" or that his parents believed boys didn't need heat in the winter so he and his brother had to steal extra blankets and huddle under them together to stay warm and not freeze to death in the winter. Thats just the shit he'd admit happened.

There's a theory that Lovecraft named Cthulhu after the Arabic word "Khadhulan" ("deserter") which is used to described Satan in the Quran.

Even if that's true, though, the fact that it's describing Satan would suggest Muslims are not fond of Mr. Cthulhu.

Jack Chick surely read about the topics he drew about, but he always came out of his reading with exactly the same opinions that he had to begin with. He started with complete conviction that Muslims are pagans, sought out material that supported his view, and read that extensively. This is explicitly blatant in the tracts about evolution and science. Chick didn't actually understand Muslim theology, evolution or many other topics, he was just very good at finding reasons to enforce his pre-existing notions.
He never read a about Islam, he read about why Islam's wrong.

He also has a bit of a Messiah complex, in that the point of these tracts are to show people the light, and give them eternal salvation. If he had to read a book on why Islam's wrong to save Muslims, he would do that. Or, that's the intention, I think. The reality of it is a bit less noble, and he comes across as severely petty at times. Like how everyone who won't listen to his main characters and convert just don't end up in hell in the end, they also die within a year or so.

Playing the Chickverse straight, with the PCs playing the role of the character who introduces the troubled protagonists to the light of Jesus, THATS the challenge, that's taking everyone out of their comfort zone. The ones on chick.com are just the ones they deem acceptable to show to the public. There have been many that were recalled for being too out-there.
>>
>>49944866
That's straight up fucking scary when you consider the content of the "acceptable" ones, including the one that says you can get away with child molestation if you say sorry to Jesus.

I assume you mean chick.com. That's as good as it's going to get, but it's still not perfect for a number of reasons.

For starters, Chick's death has caused the site to get so much traffic that it's been either down or slow as hell all day.

Also, Chick Tracts are periodically edited when something causes them to be dated, like the tract that said World War III would come shortly after 1972. Then 1992. I think the year might have been removed entirely now. Sometimes whole tracts are retired for being too dated, like "Kiss India Goodbye," a tract from the 70s about how the Soviets are going to take over India and ban Jesus forever so you'd better give the Indians Chick Tracts while you still can.

And then there are the tracts that were required for being fucked up even by Chick's standards, like Lisa (in which it's OK that a father rapes his underage daughter because he found Jesus) and Wounded Children (in which homosexuals are literally possessed by demons).

Man, in some sense I don't get this mentality. Probably because I've never seen D&D as being like something like Only War, where you keep three backup character sheets in case your character dies.

It feels like what he's describing works best on a dungeon by dungeon basis, not as part of a larger campaign. Was D&D just different when Gygax conceived the idea, or have we become namby-pampy story-obsessed idiots?
>>
>>49944989
When I think about it, Dragon's Dogma is basically "Greyhawk with Tome of Battle classes"
>>
>>49945053
He's specifying that that exact single dungeon is the thing he's talking about. On a longer basis, he wasn't like that. For a single-dungeon minicampaign, he killed the PCs as much as he could, of course.

>>49945053
DnD was built off a system we would recognize as having more in common with WFB or 40k (back when an army was 10 marines in a Rhino). Taking its roots from wargaming then, the original conception was that players played as individual models in a wargame, facing off against ever increasing threats from a GM. Roll-playing was never something Gary really cared about, and story was nothing more than your average narrative campaign in 40k: "oh this guy survived, let's roll a dice and see if he gets anything good to continue his adventure with"
>>
>>49945099
>>49945126
So what about in that next paragraph, where he's talking about 3E players? When he says adventures, is it just weird wording giving me the wrong idea? Because I think of an adventure being at least a short campaign.

>Was D&D just different when Gygax conceived the idea, or have we become namby-pampy story-obsessed idiots?
I'm not very familiar with early D&D, so I might be wrong, but my impression is that in Gygax's times D&D concerned itself with dungeon crawling and only dungeon crawling, while modern tabletop games tend to be larger in scope (forests, towns, political intrigue, BBEG out to destroy the world, etc).

30 miles west of Philly in the 70s and 80s wasn't the sticks. I lived in one of the highest rated school districts in the state at that time. The high school had its own cable tv station and channel. It was suburbia. Major mall right on route 202. General Electric had a big presence at the time, their aerospace division. Pharmaceutical companies were starting to look for property in the area and open offices. There was an equal mix of blue and white collar families. Middle class to upper middle class for that time...not what passes for middle class now.

Which is weird, right? Logically I'd have thought the religions he'd hate most would be the ones most different from whatever branch of Protestantism he practiced; obscure, eastern, polytheistic faiths and such, or else atheism. Not Catholicism, which is basically the exact same faith but with Latin and fancier hats.

The idea of playing as the miniatures in chainmail was short lived. It really didn't take that long for D&D to mature to something playable, and the B/X D&D rules are still very good (with the exception of AC). Really, the idea that Gygax didn't understand the appeal of heroism, and that he only ran gritty, low fantasy shit can be disproved by a cursory look at anything from AD&D, which in some ways is arguably more over the top than 3e.

>>
>>49945480

Not really. Protestantism is basically judaism + Jesus. Catholicism is neoplatonism + various pagan thoughts + Jesus. The conflict arises when catholics see western tradition as part of their dogma when protestants want to replace it fully with the bible. Or to put it simpler: catholics see themselves as christianised romans, protestants as direct spiritial (and sometimes phisical) descendants of hebrews. This is one of the reasons why Chick was so pro-israel.
>>
>>49945666
But... they both have massive Jesus-boners, right? They both worship the same god and such? Would I be correct in saying that, relative to other religions, they're more similar than they are different?
>>
>>49945720
Not exacly. People who have completly different religion and gods are basicly just wrong. They are seen as ignorant and uninformed. When you worship the same god but do it "wrong" you are a heretic. This is why jews while persecuted were allowed to not worship Jesus while heretics burned on stakes. Muslims do it the same way: pagans get enslaved, heretics killed on the spot.

Oh, I get it; so people who believe in a completely different religion are like people who go outside and play sports and stuff, but people who worship the same god but in a different way are like people who play Age of Sigmar; they're doing it wrong and need to be stopped.
>>

>Dark Dungeons are forever in our hearts.

>>

And there is also the fact that catholics and protestants both have a boner for Jesus but that where those shared boners end. Catholics have also a boner for saints, Mary, classical literature, art, traditions and architecture. And of course pagan philosophy. In a way Plato and Aristotle were way more important for the catholic thought than Abraham and Moses ever could. Protestants reject all that heritage.

The thing you have to remember, anon, is that Protestantism was born was born out of enmity against the Catholic church. That's where the protest in the term comes from, from Martin Luther nailing his theses to the door of the church and saying "this is what the church is doing wrong and why."

From the Protestant point of view the Catholic church is perverting their own faith and leading good people astray and into eternal damnation.
