I need to write some fluff my upcomming guard army! So why not make one together?

First roll: Regiment Classification d10
>>
Rolled 3 (1d10)

>>49815449
Been a while since I was in one of these threads.
>>
>>49815620
>Imperial Guard: A true regiment, drilled and competent in their service.

Ok off to a good start, onto our next roll: Recruitment Criteria d100
>>
Rolled 77 (1d100)

>>49815705
Ok so we got gangers. Ok roll 1d100 for the nature of our recruitment!
>>
>>49815753
One d10, sorry.
>>
Rolled 4 (1d10)

>>49815753
>>
>>49815787
What the fuck? Lol, so we do standard recruitment of gangers (not penal legion) and we only accept the most elite gangers?

Is this planet some kind of mafia world??
>>
>>49815787
Elite tithe: The best of the best of the planet

Ok so we draft the strongest and most cunning from various gangs on our homeworld
Speaking of homeworld, roll a D100
>>
Rolled 64 (1d100)

>>49815813
>>
>>49815818
Imperial World: Devout citizens, loyal to the Imperium and raised by the Creed.
Not too shabby so an earth like planet in terms of it's citizen, etc (at least that's what I imagine). Now what is the planet like? Roll d100 for terrain.
>>
Rolled 41 (1d100)

>>49815850
>>
>>49815818
So what, a bunch of super pious gangsters? This is sounding more and more like the mafia.
>>
>>49815813
Maybe the leaders of the gangs supply the Imperium with troops in exchange for them looking the other way?
Does make you wonder why people would bother moving up in the gangs if they're just gonna get shipped off.
>>
>>49815864
Super pious might be more Shrine World.

>>49815861
>41: Desert
This regiment keeps getting weirder and weirder already
>>
>>49815449
so instead of just thinking of something or asking us for ideas you are rolling up a random force from a sheet
what good does that?
>>

>>49815861
Desert: At home in sun, sand and wind.
So we got a civilized desert world, that exports gangers to the guard. What are we aiming for, saharan desert, gobi desert, dry planes, mesas, multiple suns, etc?

Anyway, next up is our regiment core units, roll a d100 please.
>>
>>49815885
Ok, more like good at giving lip service.
>>
>>49815905
/tg does this all the time. Basically, they roll and we try to find some logical way for all the randomness to fit together. It can get some pretty interesting results.

It's a fun group activity. So fuck off.
>>
>>49815928
How about this:
Outside of the more civilized, habitable parts of the planet, there are roving gangs of bandits living on the fringes, in the extreme desert. The Imperium doesn't care enough to civilize desert wastelands with no resources, so they agree not to carpetbomb the bandits and turn a blind eye, but in exchange the bandits have to send their best dudes to the Guard.

Running off of this, I'm thinking more arid steppes(pic related) than full-on desert. Desert guys have been done to death, I think making it more like the American West might be a more interesting spin.
>>
Rolled 66 (1d100)

>>49816056
I fucked my roll up. Trying again.
>>
>>49816078
Mechanized Infantry
Loads of chimeras and tanks ready to kick ass for the Imperium (hopefully)!!!

Ok, now when we got that sorted out, what do they specialize in? One D10 please.
>>
>>49816116
dice+1d10
>>
Rolled 8 (1d10)

>>49816149
shit.
>>
>>49816175
Shock & Awe. Not bad Anon, not bad at all.
For our next roll we will be rolling for our regiment's loyalty, 1d10.
>>
Rolled 6 (1d10)

>>49816195
>>
>>49816218
Undisciplined: Will follow the Emperor but don't expect them to bow to authority figures.

Fitting, since we draft them from gangers. Now, do we own any special equipment, and what is it? 1d100
>>
>>49816218
Well, that makes sense for gangers

>>49816195
Shock&Awe is interesting for desert guys. It's usually pretty hard to get the drop on someone over open sand. Maybe they dig underground to surprise people?
>>
>>49816251
Maybe they lure the enemy by using guerilla tactics into taking a path they want the enemy to take? And in the path they have hidden the majority of the army, ready to ambush and cripple the enemy before retreating, then just repeat step one. Much like the Tau Kauoyn tactic I think?
>>
Rolled 32 (1d100)

>>49816241
>>
>>49816343
Exotic Mounts
Maybe the elite/important figures in this regiment uses rough rider horses, or something like that?

Now, what is our regiment creed, it's a d100 for this one.
>>
Rolled 13 (1d100)

>>49816388
I'm kinda picking up a Lawrence of Arabia vibe from this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lChJz2DSpsE
>>
>>49816427
For The Homeworld: This regiment's mission is to demonstrate the skill and steel of the homeworld to the rest of the Imperium.

Alright, what friends does this regiment have?
>>
>>49816388
Maybe they use scouts and outriders with special mounts, using them to herd the enemy towards the main force which uses armored forces?
>>
>>49816450
Sorry, missed the die needed for this roll

These are REALLY interesting rolls.

I think if we play this right we could get something Hua Yuan tier
>>
>>49817152
Ok, what do you guys think we need to do first? Name, command structure, general lore, etc?
>>
Im heading off to bed. I hope this thread is still here in the morning, becuase I would love to help fleshing this regiment out.
>>
>>49817198
Well because I'm a lazy faggot I like to steal from real cultures, like china for Hua Yuan

For these guys I could see Celtic raider punk rockers riding dire boars, african child soldier dragoons riding fuzzy raptors, yakuza samurai riding bioluminsecent tron insects, english mod lancers riding technocolor horse monsters, shoot even a Hua Yuanese Gang riding pit wolves, Core Dragons, and Bat apes
>>
>>49816388
If we are mafia horsemen, then I'm sure there's something we can do with a horse head death threat.
>>
>>49816701
>MFW these traits
I'm thinking these guys have a really decentralized command structure, with the strongest, toughest guys forming their own commands within the Regiment under the Big Boss. Under the Captains/Capos there are just bands of comrades who stick together and get their job done. The band of brothers is the basic unit of the regiment, and they all take care of their equipment together. Everybody in the band shares, stealing from other Captains/Capos guys is okay if you can get away with it, but no infighting on the battlefield. The Big Boss gets first pic of newly issued equipment, rations, lodgings, missions, loot, you name it he gets it. Everybodies the best of the best, that's the only way a ganger can earn a spot in the Guard back home, get a chance to serve the Emperor, Praised be his will.

The only guys who don't get messed with are regimental priests. They aren't tough guys always, but everybody trusts them, and everybody attends their services cause only the Emperor can protect their souls, no matter how tough they are. Your knife can end a life, but only the Emperor can quell your strife.

Mech. Infantry, Shock and Awe and Exotic mounts all go together pretty well, but we need to settle on what the mounts are first. Camels do well in deserts, but they're not cool or war-like. Giant ass horses, like 15 feet tall ones, might be cool. Or any of this anons suggestions>>49817502
>>
>>49817856

We just need to decide what we want to roll with.

This is all good stuff

They are also somehow good with getting the best provisions and weapons from Segmentum Command. So much so, that the Inquisition is investigating rumors of corrupt sector quartermasters.

Ecclesiarchy-style battle platforms -- not full Sentinels, but still armored walkers from which the toughest unleash their nastiest munitions.

Sandy deserts are kinda done very often. But who does a steppe world have gangers? I suppose you could stretch the term ganger to mean the wild peoples of the stepped, who live outside the settlements that really serve the Imperium, but that's just not the same spirits
>>49816025
That would make sense, but this is a desert world, so the whole planet is a desert innit?
>>49815928
Mesas sounds cool.

What if the homeworld is comprised of a handful of huge cities that dominate regional water resources, with large, dense urban areas? Those cities dominate smaller towns that exist only to farm, provide amenities to military forts, extract resources from the harsh landscape, or provide functions critical to the planets importance to the imperium. There is no inbetween, only the harsh outposts and the glittering cities.

Such confined living spaces breed discontent, and discontent breed strife, and strife breeds crime, and crime breeds gangs. Those gangs, the only powerful people of the desperate but pious underclass of [PLANET X] are the only men tough enough to be able to join the Imperial Guard. What a surefire way to leave behind poverty and harshlife- if you can survive your term of service

What steeds do our gangers ride? And do they use them exclusively, or in conjunction with more standard Guard vehicles?

pic not related (maybe)
>>
>>49819280
Well I think we can make the planet's climes of little import, and instead focusing on the urban aspects so we can get stuff like >>49817856
>>49817683
>>49817502
>>
Just rolled this up for my dudes that I'm working on.
Anybody care to make sense of it for me? seems like there's lots of contradictions.

Desperadoes then? The planet has a bandit problem and rustles up their most dangerous outlaws to send off world. So bounties are actually how they conscript for the Guard.

Good themes in listed in descending order of plausibility

>Desperados

I had an idea for a regiment that's used to field test tactics and weapons, ranging from state of the art tech and tactical genius tactics, to absolute rubbish gear and insane suicidal tier tactics.

Also it might double as officer training since their guinea pigs anyway
>>
Bump
>>
>>49822592

>>
Let's come up with the general fluff for the planet itself. When was it colonized, who rules the planet, what's the fauna and flora like?
>>
>>49824090
That may indeed be easier if we decide a theme
>>
>>49815449
making an imperial guard army that is pure armor, let's see those lists.
>>
>>49824244
How about we keep the theme simple? Nothing too complex, etc....
>>
>>49821168
I've got to say I like the Mafioso idea. We could combine it with >>49820398 so that whilst most of the Guardsmen are recruited from a collection of crime families (who perhaps have some sort of deal with the local governor) they also conscript independent criminals who's bounty hits a certain level. perhaps these desperadoes are pitied by the other members of the regiment they don't have a connection to one of the families. Then of course they blow off a cultists face and no ones pitying them anymore
>>
>>49824553
I like this. Should be base them on a irl culture? Or should we take some time to make our own culture for these guys/planet
>>
>>49816701
Planet colonized by Imperial Guard vets that got mutilated beyond usefulness, and thus founded a place dedicated to fellow imperials bound to war.

As the planet grew, a couple of houses emerged, each coming from a distinctive regiment.
<insert godfather 2 plot here>

- The Emperor's High Rollers
The top enforcers of each house of this not-las vegas world. Fiercely loyal due to military tradition but they still hate each other, which may bring some problems in the terrain.

They also employ strange tactics, bringing very fast vehicles filled with soldiers that quickly gundown their target and speed away to safety.

The Eleven
An elite branch of the Emperor's High Rollers, grand masters of infiltration and extraction and often employed by the imperium to retrieve guarded artifacts, this guys could steal Bluddflagg's hat without him noticing.

tl;dr Las Vegas hive world with mobsters doing drive bys in armored limousines, also George Clooney
>>
Just quick thought.
Exotic steed? Could be some type of sand worm albeit smaller (though it would be too difficult to find model)
Two type of gangsters: sand bandits (wurms/camels/big horses) controlling deposits of some rarer minerals/routes to ancient elves shrines and mafia like urban families in cities controling water, but mostly produce food and maintains agriculture around few big rivers.
Got attacks from spaaace elves, cause deserts contain their long lost cities of some pious value and bandits with mafianos alike went for some merry looting there. Also defense against elf revenge raids are one of the bonding points for them...they also serve together rotations in PDF for small amount of time (Michael and mains in Mafia 2 and Mafia 3 was also in army). Cites needs minerals from deserts and deserts need cities for food,
>>
Here's an Idea. How's about we have the regiment be a conglomerate of native crime syndicates, brought together to protect their defenseless planet from marauding eldar.

That way we can have our gunslingers, mobsters, triads, yakuza, carteles, punk rockers, and gangsters in the same regiment.

A common joke in the streets is that the cops are the biggest gang in America. A common joke amongst more international groups, and indeed natives from the streets, is that the US military is the biggest gang in the world.

The same mentality could apply here, albeit more literally
>>
>>49824840
"Hey Larry, guess what you call an arbitre task force.."

"What? And this better not be a joke about my mama"

"Nah I'm serious, you call them 'well armed thugs"

sorry for my shitty joke
>>
>>49824863
Kek
>>
>>49824840
I'm not sure about this. pouring too many different cultures into the same regiment would probably end with it either being A: a complete clusterfuck, or B: Hua Yuan lite. I think we should stay with mafia men and Cowboys who ride weird monsters.

on the animal note, might I suggest either something raptor-like or lizard camels that spit acid.
>>
>>49824968
Some alien-like, like you suggest, e.g. Space lizards and other alien beasts sounds cool and all. But I still think that rough rider horses got our (possible) thene the best.
>>
>>49824968
We can steer away from Asian influences if that would make you more comfortable

But I can see this working if we divide the gangs into "companies"
>>
We could have a mix of the Mafias and the cowboys theme. So there are the mafia's and there are the bounty hunters. Each of them has a bounty on the others. Dudes with the highest bounty from both type of people will be drafted in the Regiment. This led to a highly indiscipline regiment as enemies must now work together. Of course the companies tend to be homogeneous with bounty hunters and mafioso completely separated.
>>
>>49825244
"Got news from down south, near Beckmore's Ridge. You know the place not far away from Ziglev. It turns out that the Grox ranchers have hired some bounty hunters and mercenaries, off worlders if you can believe that. Just to keep us away!"

"Do we have any other good target to take "tribute" from then?"

"Well there still a few unprotected small towns along the Sperdicus Lambda maglev rails."

(Tried to write some fluff, what do you think? I left out explaining some of the names to open up for more fluff/worldbuilding later on)
>>
>>49825323
This could work a sort of Borderlands-esque world where bounty hunters gather to make a name for themselves. Though I'm thinking the mafioso is more elite than Grox stealing. I'm thinking bank robbery, human trafficking, counterfeit ops, drugs/moonshine running.
>>
>>49825385
I just wrote what for example a band of thugs/bandits would say. Since we haven't really nailed down the theme yet I figured I could start of light.
>>
>>49825244
If they're going to be separated why don't we make the mafia oriented more around mechanised combat and the bounty hunters are more biologically oriented. like the bounty hunters don't just have horses/other mounts that they ride, but maybe the local equivalent of a hunting dog to sniff out hidden foes/alert them if an enemy is getting close to their position, or cybernetically enhanced Vultures they use for spying/scouting. just to give them an even more different role in the regiment
>>
>>49824989
My only question is this, exactly how "Exotic" would horse be in 40K? cause we've got "Exotic mounts" not "bog-standard mounts"
>>
>>49825385
If we aren't going to go full multinational crime syndicate formed for the greater good of the planet, borderlands esque bounty hunters could be cool
>>
>>49823838
>>
>>49827119
>>
So has anyone ever tried to rationalize Only War's creation tables? Like, balance it so that every point spent is more-or-less of equal value. I know the regiment creation PDF puts everything from all three books in one place (and that's really useful) but points values/worths are still all over the place.

This might belong more in 40kRPG but I thought I'd ask here first.
>>
>>49825385
I like that idea!
>>
What would be a good name for the planet?

Of course we can. If were going mafioso, it should be noted that the Mafia in Italy is strongest in the South, where quite a few spaghetti westerns were shot, so our cowboys fit in. They just gotta be Italian, see?

So, here's what we have for the Regiment of Fumonco

>Elite Gangers, tithed
>Imperial World: Devout citizens, loyal to the Imperium and raised by the Creed
>Fumonco is a desert world
>Our gangers are undisciplined, have exotic mounts [needs to be decided], their main method of war is mechanized infantry and they're extremely proud of their homeworld
>Best buds are some PDF force; Most hated foes are Eldar

We just need to figure out what the mounts are, who these PDF buds are, and why Fumoncos hate the Eldar

Guardsmen don't really get into fights with Eldar often enough, or in fierce enough battles, to regularly hate the shit out of them. So I think the Eldar musta done something to Fumonco. Maybe some rich bastard bought himself a n eldar soulstone/artifact, did some weird shit with it, and got killed along with thousands of other people in an Eldar raid to get their shit back. Or maybe it was hundred of thousands, cause the Eldar were pissed, and fuck those Mon'Keigh, right?

This explains 1) Why Fumoncos hate Eldar, 2) Why Fumoncos are so eager to show off their pride in their homeworld, 3) Why Fumoncos are only sending their elite tithe to fight, cause so many stupid young bastards wanna go fight, but the Planetary Governor can't wrangle enough equipment outta the Administratum. Gangers make up the majority of the tithe, but special slots are reserved for the desert dwelling groxpokes who ride________. What do they ride?

Additional idea: Regimental color is red, for the lives of those lost to those FUKKEN XENOS, and as a reference to Giuseppe Garibaldi
>>
>>49832934
I think they should ride something with a pack instinct (but not wolves cause Russ would have our guts for garters), to encourage certain levels of loyalty not simply between beast and rider but also between riders, like maybe their mounts run off on them in that respect.

So obviously I'm thinking large desert Hyenas
