>1841, McMurdo Sound charted by HMS Terror, under the command of British explorer James Clark Ross, and named after Lieutenant Archibald McMurdo. Significant interest from the Crown spurs further planning into expeditions to the volcano on Ross island.

>1860-62 Terra Nova Expedition; Discovery Hut built by Swedish explorer Salomon August Andrée , adjacent to the harbor at Hut Point. Their expedition funded by joint British/Swedish Royal interests. The volcanic rock of the site is the southernmost bare ground accessible by ship in the Antarctic.

>Sometime in 1870, a covert expedition sent from Europe to the volcano. A massive black steamship is seen undocking from Portsmouth, an unknown flag flying from her mast. Several other haulers seen leaving port then making South, their holds packed with loads of steel, heavy machinery, and provisions for thousands.

>1880 London, The Victorian Crown Science Academy begins aggressively recruiting engineers, scientists and anthropologists from around the globe to form a multinational scientific force. Their ranks swell, and many take lucrative positions paid by multiple Royal benefactors. Behind closed doors, they are assessed for their capacity for military training, and survival skills in harsh environments, as well as their technical qualifications.

>1888, January 11. The Stargate is powered up. Under command from her Magesty, The Queen Victoria, The Royal First Expeditionary Force is sent through to another world

The party will be playing as the Expeditionary Forces; explorers, adventurers, military men. Heroes. I plan to throw them into the mix with Gou'auld, Gates, and proper space fights. Exploration in the true Victorian Science fashion, all brass trimmings and pith helmets.

What are some things you would NEED to see in a game like this?

Probably something to make sure that the Goa'uld don't just invade two weeks after getting the gate, and a way for the humies to be on par with goa'uld footsoldiers I guess.

A fair point; the first few sessions will likely be "OH GOD they have EXPLOSIONS in their staves!" and the party procuring some tech to steal.

Also, before anyone asks, the gate will have an Iris analogue. Likely being immersed in hot lava in a volcano when not in use, both to ambiently charge power and to destroy any interlopers

m8, if they land in Antarctica, they're stuck there.
By early SG1, it takes months for Apophis' vessels to come, and Jaffas have nothing that passes through the gates that could take them to the mainland. Plus, as far they'll be concerned, Earth's a worthless ice covered planet, because everyone knows if there's anything interesting on a planet, it's within walking distance of the gate.

If you're doing space battles, I would say you should crib some ideas from Space: 1889 and do open decked steamships guided by aetheric rudders.
>>

I don't really have anything to contribute other than to say that this sounds really cool. I'll admit that I'm more fond of the concept of star gates in general than of the Stargate universe, itself, but this sounds like one of the more interesting ways of doing either.

>What are some things you would NEED to see in a game like this?
Lots of cold weather gear? Merely surviving Antarctica can be quite the undertaking; just ask Shackleton. So I'd very much play up the isolation, the harsh conditions, and survivalist aspects of the setting (rationing and so forth). Once they're through the gate, they might find it hard to retreat through it, suddenly plunging them back into arctic (well, antarctic) conditions without much in the way of support. That's the sort of thing you have to prepare for. So it might act like a cold wall of desolation, forcing them to take refuge and survive in world on the other side of the gate.
>>
>>49360045
I am so going to steal this idea. Just gonna decide which GURPS books to use with this.

How will they do it with probes and stuff? Becuase what if the party ends up on a toxic world, or what if the gate is out in space?

and then Im forcing in radio telegraphy in the beginning. Really, a stray dog with a transmitter strapped to him with a repeating signal, hooked up to the dog's heatbeat/breathing.

Assuming it still transmitting after 5 minutes on the clock, they send in a scout party.

This will all be pre-party though. I want them exploring direct, and the scouts will be the extreeme canaries in a coal mine

>>
>>49360284
>What are some things you would NEED to see in a game like this?

I'd imagine that any pre-WWI tech would probably rapidly advance to at least WWI levels just to try to play catch-up with Goa'uld technology. Possibly closer to even WWII level tech.

Start off with Wichester repeating rifles and Gatling guns, and progress towards automatic rifles, submachine guns, assault rifles, and machine guns.

Maybe throw in the odd Tesla/Eddison electric "rifle" (something similar in size/shape to a Ghostbusters proton pack) to give our heroes some kind of Staff Weapon or Zat'nik'tel equivalent.
>>
>>49360693
Maybe show the really nasty side of Pax Brittania and send in prisoners. Occasionally they escape the chain.

Certainly my good man! Cameo appearances by the greatest engineers of the time will be a nice treat. I'm certainly gonna have some space-wizardry done by a certain Serbian electrical engineer, If I can.

I can also see them encountering zat guns, and the engineers going "Why does it need to run forever? Turn up the power and blow shit up with 100 shots! Expendability!"
>>
>>49360734
A great question; what happens if they meet a technocracy? or even just spacefarers?

I'm certain it will come down to Earth being shunned away, seen as barbaric conquerers. Might all come down to how the players handle it. Might make that a nice big finisher for later campaign

Really,. I think the fun will be had trapsing about as yet another uplifted decadent and flawed empire, clawing space out in the Ancients wake, competing with other backward powers for space
>>
>>49360688
>Im forcing in radio telegraphy in the beginning. Really, a stray dog with a transmitter strapped to him with a repeating signal, hooked up to the dog's heatbeat/breathing.
You're playing fast and loose with technology? Because wireless telegraphy didn't yet exist in 1888, and even decades later, there's no way you'd be able to have a transmitter small enough to strap it to a dog, much less the sophistication to monitor his heartbeat and breathing. What you're talking about there sounds more like a Vietnam-era feat (and even that's giving mad science the benefit of the doubt).
>>
>>49360045
Without the gate address on the cover stones from the Egyptian gate, and without the subsequent addresses from the Abydos cartouche they'd be dialing at random without even knowing how many symbols there are in an address or that addresses end in a point of origin.

>>49360637
You could engineer some kind of elaborate electromechanical device that emits a simple radio signal and ceases to emit it if temperature or barometric pressure drop below a particular point, push it through the gate and set up a receiver on your side and you'd be able to get a vague indication of whether or not conditions on the other side were kind of safe.
>>
>>49360786
Yeah, its kinda getting swept under the rug. Likely Ill introduce some lost tech they recover from the other side, on a dead world/gou'auld outpost. Then adaptation of the higher tech begins!

As much as I can have the party struggle fruitlessly to dial a gate to a random world and fall into a sun,. I think it would be more fun to not die XCOM style every session
>>
Isn't is possible shipping away the gate to less remote area? maybe Austrailian mainland or Tasmania.
>>
>>49360790
>no phone books
I've been considering this. Would it be hackeneyed to say there was a lucky find, and the last address the DHD in antarctica had got them to a devestated Gou'auld outpost they could scavenge some tech and maps from?

>>49360812
I'm enamoured with a volcano+ice location, for practical security and SCIENCE!
>>
What about alien bacteria and other nasty stuff that could kill humans?
>>
>>49360705
I think you're going about things the wrong way. Goa'uld technology would be utilized first and foremost. Some things might be reversed engineered, but a lot of it would be frankly beyond the capabilities of 19th century scientists and engineers. Maybe they'd learn some basics and crudely advanced along similar lines, producing really shitty versions of their staves and such. Like, I'm thinking of bazooka-sized tubes with wires leading to car battery-size power packs just to produce something less accurate and *maybe* as powerful, though probably with a reduced range. And assault rifles? I don't see it. That's different technology, and if anything, their focus on reverse-engineering Goa'uld technology would lead them away from the innovation of conventional arms.
>>
>>49360821

Gate excavation site might contain some ancient phonebook left.
>>
>>49360812
It would be frankly easier and far less suspicious to mount an expedition to recover the gate from the glacier it's buried in (which is apparently close enough to water with shallow enough ice that a submarine can surface there) than it would be to continuously ship resources to Antarctica for no apparent reason.
>>
>>49360806
That could certainly still be fun, but maybe it's the history buff in me that thinks it would be cooler to avoid anachronism and play things as straight as possible. This would lead to more interesting and original play. You train the dog to go through, wait around for a bit, and come back.
>>
>>49360834

yes, gould tech would not directly help them developing assault rifle or jet fighter.
>>
>>49360821
The British Empire occupies Egypt at this point in time anyway, it would be completely plausible for them to also find that gate, in which case they'd have the address to Abydos and also a gate in a sensible location, all they'd need to do is move the DHD.
>>
>>49360857
Unfortunately you can't do this, since the gate only goes in one direction.

Thing is, in canon, the beta gate in the ice is from the time of the ancients. The Alpha gate in the sand is from the the Gou'auld first conquered Earth and plunked a gate on the ground themselves manually. It would be a bit of a stretch to find a connection from the Antarctic to the Egyptians... Other than vague hieroglyphics
>>
>>49360983
It's really simple. The random fringe archeologist they get to take a look at the gate says "I'VE SEEN THIS!!" rummages through his backpack, pulls out an old book that has an etching of an egyptian mural that has a picture of the stargate in it.

>>
>>49361138

You need to brush up on the setting anon! Matter goes one way only. Energy is uninterrupted. So transmissions are a-okay

But regardless, the whole situation where the gates get scouted my become a bit moot, as likely they will have a 'conveniently placed' list of habitable sites to visit.

I'm probably going to have to make that a plot point as well, so the players dont feel it was lampshaded.,.
>>

>>

>>49360503
Just High Tech for general gear and weapons.
Basic Set has all the rules you'd want on playing on different worlds (or in Antarctica).
You could give a look to spaceships if you think it's going to be relevant, but desu, short of stealing a Ha'tak and deathgliders like in the show, I don't think you'd need it. I really doubt tau'ri could build any kind of spaceships in 1888 or thereabout, it's just way too early.
I'm not super sure 1888 people would really need Martial Arts, but it's always a good book, you know? Especially since Jaffa have this martial arts staff fighting thing going on.

>>49360688
First world they find has an ancient outpost filled with kinos, obviously.
>>
>>49361185
The Antarctic gate is older than the egypt gate, not newer and the only controls on the DHD are symbols and the big red button.

The pegasus gates which actually are newer and more advanced are routinely found in orbit of planets, so the functionality you proposed wouldn't even make sense.
>>
>>49361153
Actually, in the movie at least, doesn't the transmission come not through the gate but through space, instantly traversing many light years of space through the magic of script writers being bad at science? Or am I misremembering things?
>>
>>49360688
I'd suggest using canaries, coal mine style, rather than dogs. You're British, for fucks' sake, dogs are a man's best friend. Only the god-damned Russians would use dogs for that.

>>49361243
>KINO's not dawgs!

>>
>>49360834
desu in 1888 in GURPS, you don't really need to steal guns or reverse engineer goa'uld tech.
By default in GURPS, ~1890 rifles hit *hard*, and if Jaffas have such good armor that people feel some kind of armor piercing is needed, Jaffas are going to get rekt. Our rifles'd have a similar rate of fire, but way better accuracy and damage.

>>49361226
I think they just ignore the radio thing in the movie, and came up with "only matter can't go both ways" in the series to explain the movie.

A DHD has no interface to provide feedback on, it doesn't provide any feedback to the person dialing it at all. It either successfully dials or doesn't. Also the only difference between the beta gate DHD and any other DHD is that it has a different symbol for the point of origin.
>>
>>49361243

>>
>>49361310
The problem isn't what you send through, it's getting information back without telecommunications. Without it that random prisoner has to find the DHD on the other side of the gate, dial home and come back through to report what's on the other side, which wouldn't have worked in the scenario in the movie where the home address is unknown, or in any case where the DHD is damaged or distant from the gate for some reason, like if it got put in a museum.
>>
>>49361296
There was the great suggestion in the last thread about this that they just make .303 British is an armor piercing Naquadah core since it's both incredibly hard and incredibly dense.

>>
>>49361356
Looking at stats, an elephant gun does 6d+2 pi++. That's kind overkill.
The Lebel Modèle 1886 does 6d pi and is easier to handle and much cheaper. To stick to British things, the Lee-Metford mk1 is stated as 5d+2pi.

>>49361414
I was about to ask if late 19th Brits could figure that out, but then I remembered 90% of the Goa'uld slaves still live in the bronze age and still manage to build spaceships.
So yay, AP ammo for all! And probably as good as ultra-tech's so you don't have to multiply the damage by 0.7!
>>
>>49361381
What about something designed to give out a radio pulse? Some much cruder than wireless telegraphy. Maybe a barrel full of chemicals that would react and send off electromagnetic pulse when its chambers are opened to one another, or a metal rod (connected to wires?) is slid into it or something. No fidelity. No control. Just a spike that would be detectable even by very crude equipment. A burst of static.
>>
>>49360851
How long can an address stay punched in without a user hitting the big red "Go" button in the middle?

If the DHD already had an address locked in, but never confirmed, the expedition could get one free trip to wherever the last user (millenia prior) was planning to go.

A user that could have been on their way to some place like an outpost, one with addresses, that may now be abandoned.

This could still fit with the continuity of the show, if that's important, as Jack and Sam coming to Earth through the gate would have cleared the DHD.
>>
>>49361153

It's not really clear exactly how Naquadah interacts with explosives, but it's clearly not actually unstable or explosive by itself since people make stargates and spaceships out of it. As part of a bullet I doubt it would actually act like an explosive since all its doing is hitting the target.

See Armor-Piercing Hardcore (High-Tech 167) or Armor-Piercing Enhanced Penetrator (Ultra-Tech 152) for reference. Basically you'd get significantly greater armor penetration in exchange for slightly reduced wounding ability.

It's not in any way certain that you could do that since the matter passing into the stargate is dematerialized. The cable won't actually be continuous.
>>
>>49362973
Well that is for someone nerdier than me to figure out, but i do remember people going though the stargate into outer space and being tethered and coming to a halt via cable from the stargate. Or am i imagining that?

The event horizon of the destination gate de-materializes you in the same way as the origin gate, but you don't actually get re-materialized because that event horizon has no destination. Maybe if you're lucky you get stored in the gates buffer.

So you can stick your hand in the event horizon of the destination gate and pull it back out just fine, this is shown in an episode, but if you're fully de-materialized you're pretty much just deleted from the universe.

They find some Kino's left behind by the ancients who placed the Stargate
>>49360661
It has some gate addresses to start with maybe a video of gate operation. That would would give them incentive/starting guidence and a idea how/what the gates were.
>>49360688
And they could be used to check out a gate before entering. A limited number could be found to find destinations, then the Brave Men of Her Majesty would have to enter the bloody thing.

Then you have all kinds of neat ideas
Maybe something snuck out and stowed away back to England and Maybe it's not a human Jack the Ripper.

Imagining it.
There was a sequence with a cable, but that was O'neil and Teal'c going down from the windows in front of the gate to the gate itself, to get a nuke as close as possible. The gate was stuck open because a team went to explore a planet close to wormhole dialed, and the wormhole's gravitational waves or whatever got the gate stuck open.

Kino'd be absurdly useful and convenient for a program that doesn't have MALPs.
>>
>>49363817
The problem is it's a piece of equipment only found in destiny, specifically on Destiny itself. It wouldn't make much sense for them to find them anywhere in the milky way.

I mean by all means give them something like that if you want, but you'd be better off using something like the Goa'uld orb thing seen in the pilot, or even a recon drone like those used by Anubis.

>>49363760
I was thinking of ep10 s1 torment of tantalus. Where the cable is cut when the gate seizes, but if anything could be sent back before the gate ended, I don't remember.

Well I think my idea of an early radio by Nikola tesla is plausible. Since he did figure out how to radio control a boat about that time. Or just send the brave of her majestys subjects and hope for the best

6 of one , half a dozen of the other, and the game will turn out fine.

Just gotta make sure the team is absolutely racist and in the service to QUEEN AND COUNTRY

How outlandish would it be to have a race of mechanical androids? Like, as a major faction in the setting?

Not replicators, and not terminators. But maybe... Somewhat simple not-robots, smart enough to engage in small talk, but not to really learn and improve. Self repair, but not design. Kinda Bicentennial Man in the earliest stages? Left over from another race perhaps?

1894 the Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi built the first complete, commercially successful wireless telegraphy system based on airborne Hertzian waves (radio transmission). Marconi demonstrated application of radio in military and marine communications and started a company for the development and propagation of radio communication services and equipment.

so maybe with the Advent of Her Majestys Stargate Project 1880 they hired the best and brightest. So maybe we get in 1887

" You will be using a very advanced device A Hertizan Communicator invented by a Italian chap named Marconi. You will find him over in the research camp"
All kinds of neat ideas are bouncing in my head for this.
These Stargate Fellows are very advanced they use Hertzian communicators, very compact only 6 stone in weight but you can talk for several leagues. They also use Webley Self-Extracting Revolvers and other very advanced equipment.

heh my captacha was tea.... :) very british

The Stargates do have a certain inbuilt functionality that serves as safeguards. Like not creating wormholes through a sun, for example. The Tau'ri tend to bypass those issues because no DHD, which pissed off the Asgard once or twice.

Naquadah is supposed to be a room-temperature superconductor, or a core element of one, since they say several times that the Stargate is one and also that it's made of naquadah. Naquadria was the explosive version.
>>
>>49363760
It was time dilation from the black hole. The Stargate was drawing power from it, and that plus the dilation kept the gate open and impossible to shut down.

I think Carter mentioned it shouldn't have been possible (observation of a black hole) via the laws of physics, but it was some fluke of wormhole operation.

John Browning was alive in this time period, his first design of the M1895 was made sometime in the late 1880s. It is a air-cooled beltfed machine gun with a fire rate of 400+ rounds per minute. If he was recruited it would not be out of the realm of possibility for the group to get nearly modern equipment, including magazine-fed pistols like Browning's 1911. The gun was so innovative that if you didnt know what it was you would not be able to tell it was engineered over 100 years ago.

The Destiny is older than Ancients in the Milky Way though. Most caches of kinos have probably been looged by goa'ulds, just need to find one intact.

Or just have a rather large detachment of indian troops to send in first.

"Well lads the bulb is blinking breathable air! You lot go first and we send in the first extraterrestrial expeditionary force after you lot! Now now, no praying, no time! Get your pashtun backside up that ramp!

And now i have a wish to see the 17th lancers charge through the gate to save the group, armed with Naquadah enhanced lances that pierce Jaffa armour

Naquadah bombs are a thing, as are Naquadah enhanced nuclear bombs, it's also the fuel source of most Goa'uld technology. The term "weapons grade Naquadah" is frequently used throughout the series. So in addition to being a superconductor it also clearly useful for creating powerful explosives and for power generation. Naquadria was the extremely rare, highly unstable variant only found on that one planet where the bad Daniel replacement came from.

Possibly there are different isotopes of Naquadah, or Naquadah behaves very differently depending on if its pure or alloyed.

This is England, so actually the relevant personality when it comes to small arms development is Hiram Maxim and the various staff of the Royal Small Arms Factory.

Standard British rifle in 1888 would be the Magazine Lee-Metford, literally introduced into line service that year. Black powder cartridge at first, with smokeless coming into service later on--found to cause accelerated wear of the barrels. If the campaign lasts to 1895 then you finally get the original Magazine Lee-Enfield.

>all this stuff about Goa'uld technology and Naquadah

Fair enough, but I'll always remember Stargate as being the series where Earth's guns are a fair fight for alien blasty shit a lot of the time. It's just here you trade autofire for being able to plug a Jaffa square in the symbiote from 400 meters out with a good shot.

Nothing is idiot-proof. If it was, 70% of the plots in the shows wouldn't have happened.

Granted, a decent chunk of that 70% is also Earth humans finding Ancient shit and turning it on without reading the instruction manual.
