>This is a quest taking place in the Fullmetal Alchemist setting, beginning at roughly the same time as the original story. However, some parts of the setting have been slightly altered. You will be playing as a Iskander Steiner, a young alchemist, who will develop based on the choices made by the players. Remember that write-ins are always welcome, and to have fun.

I like the paper idea, though we'd need to know if that's a valid method. I definitely don't want it just so we can communicate easier and help/impress Sheska more. <3

You watch as the four people begin to close in on you and Leah from all directions. The old man called them "chimeras". You're familiar with the term. A creature created by combining two or more different creatures via alchemy. Though you're only aware of cases of chimeras made by combining animals, never humans. In fact, these four don't really give you the feeling that they're chimeras at all, they look fairly normal. You have to wonder if the old man really knows what he's talking about.

You see Leah gripping her rifle tightly. She looks like she could be ready to shoot at any moment, and you know how dangerous that could be. In order to save money on bullets, she always takes down her quarry in one shot. If she aims that thing, somebody's getting killed. There's still a chance you could calm her down, if you tried.

You take a good look at the layout of the bar. The stone of the floor and walls, along with the wood of the tables and chairs seem to all be simple material. Fairly easy to transmute, if need be. You see the way you came in has a handful of guys around it. You'd probably have to fight past them to escapes. There also seems to be a hallway leading further back, but there's no telling where that goes.

The four people closing in on you still seem like they intend to take it easy on you. They likely won't attempt to use lethal force unless you do so first. You might be able to fight them, but then again, you don't really know how strong they are.

"The way you're acting is giving your buddy there the impression that I'm unreasonable." Donovan says. "And I don't really like that. My image is important to me, you know. Listen to Martel, would you? We can still make this easy. Hand it over."

The woman, presumably Martel, inches ever closer. You'll have to decide what to do quickly.

Basically alchemists break the second law of thermodynamics with their minds/willpower. The bend and shape and change matter to make effects. Expanding rock by making it less dense to create walls, changing air molecules, make a blade out of a part of metal arm, etc.

>>
>>49191395

You'll probably have better luck fighting these guys than trying to reason with them. You get ready to fight.

You don't have a circle set up, but you don't need one. You've seen your teacher do it. Circleless alchemy. You can feel it, that you're now capable of the same. You clap your hands together, and press them to the ground.

You see the sparks of electricity crackle, as the stone of the floor rises up. You leave some at roughly ankle height near your adversaries, while rising more stone up higher, then separating it into fine particles. A dust cloud. Should be helpful to get you out of here.

As you move, you hear a shot. Leah's fired her rifle. You expect someone to have dropped, but before the dust clouds things up too much, you see the woman from before contorting towards you like a snake, with only a wound on the edge of her shoulder. Leah would never have missed a shot like that. Somehow this woman dodged it.

With the dust cloud up, you grab Leah and make for the exit, smashing the faces in of a few guys who get in the way. The two of you manage to get outside, but three people emerge not far behind you. It's Martel, the swordsman, and the large man from before that was at the door. He's carrying a large hammer.

"You're pretty tough, kid." the man notes. "Definitely military material. But we can't just let you go."

You see horns emerge out of the man's head, and his muscles swell up. He must not be a normal human after all.

"We don't like it, but it's what we have to do." the man with the sword tells you. "Sorry, kids. I'd help you if I could."

The three come at you again, faster than you expected. The alley behind you is clear, but you don't know if you could outrun them. Then again, you don't necessarily have to run.

An alleyway this narrow is the perfect spot to get these guys hung up at. You and Leah make a break down the alley, while you clap your hands and quickly press them to the ground.

You raise not just one, but several thick walls spanning the breadth of the alleyway. These guys will probably try to bust through them, but you ensure it will be slow going. It will take quite some time for them to catch up.

You and Leah run off as you hear the three of them trying their best to break through. You should have a few minute's head start at the very least.

"Thanks, Isk" Leah says as the two of you run. "But they won't stop there. We've got to get out of town. Unfortunately, I don't have enough money on me for two tickets to Central. We could go back to my place and see what we can scrounge up, but that might not be safe now... Maybe your teacher? If you were brave enough to go back, of course. I don't know, we might just have to stow away if it comes to it."

It seems like Leah is leaving the choice up to you. You think of going back to your place, but you doubt you have enough to cover the tickets. Though you might have something you can take, anyway.

You turn the corner and start heading straight for the train station. There's no time to stick around here, if you have to stow away, so be it.

It's just a few minutes before you and Leah pull up on the station. You check the schedule and find that you're in luck. A train heading North for Central is leaving in just a few minutes. The question is how you're going to be on it.

"So what do we do, Isk?" Leah asks, looking the train over. "If we sneak inside, I can't imagine we'll make it very far. Maybe we could try and stow away in one of the storage cars. More uncomfortable, but we might just make it the whole way. Then again, if we play our cards right, we could stay inside the whole time. We'd have to be careful, though. Either way, we'd be getting away from here, at least."

You deliberate over your options while looking out over your hometown one last time.

You decide to take the route that's more sure to get you where you're going, despite the fact that it may be significantly less comfortable.

You and Leah make your way towards the end of the train, making sure to avoid drawing any attention, then quickly sneak into one of the cars.

The inside is filled with crates, and it's dark and cold. You can only imagine it will get worse at night. And this is an overnight train. But you've made your decision, and you stick to it.

It not inconceivable that they'd check for stowaways here as well, so you use alchemy to take some wood from the other crates until you have enough to form an extra one, which you and Leah hide inside. Unless you make a bunch of noise, you should be plenty well hidden to make it all the way to Central.

As the minutes go by, you feel the train start to roll out of the station. As it does, you hear some footsteps running behind the car.

"That car, I'm sure of it! I can smell them!" it's the voice of the swordsman from earlier. "Damn it, they're getting away!"

The footsteps get fainter and fainter as the train picks up speed. You somehow lucked out. You should be plenty hidden enough for the rest of the ride.

"I've got some bread left over." Leah says, motioning to her coat pocket. "We're probably going to need it."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSyqRAc0f9c&index=36&

The hours pass slowly, but as night falls, you're actually grateful for being in such a confined space. It may be a tight fit, but it's doing a good job of keeping you warm. The train stops a couple of times, and the car is opened up, but you're never discovered. The two of you eat your bread and even manage to sleep before the train finally arrives at its destination in the morning. Now you should be at Central Station. Here comes the hard part.

The two of you carefully try to exit the car without drawing any suspicion, but it's nearly impossible on this busy train platform. Despite your best efforts, you're spotted.

"Hey, you two!" one of the station staff calls after you. "What do you think you're doing?"

You're close enough to an exit to make a break for it, and the two of you manage to evade any pursuers, emerging onto the Central City streets. Though you imagine showing up to the station again without some serious leverage would be a very bad idea.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScFNQPLXq64&index=18&

The two of you stop briefly. You've both been to Central a couple of times, but the sheer size and grandeur of the city never cease to amaze you. Once the two of you are done taking in the scene, you keep walking.

"So, we're here." Leah sighs. "But we have some problems. We don't know if you can just take the State Alchemist exam any time, or how long it takes to get results. So we don't have a place to stay in the meantime, since we don't know anyone here. Plus, we can't afford a hotel with the little money I have. It might be enough to get us a couple day's worth of food if we ration. We might be coming up on some difficult times."

All of the things Leah mentioned are true. You're pretty confident in your ability to pass the exam, though. You just have to figure out everything else until that works itself out.

You decide that your time here will require some money if you plan to survive. There's no telling how long you may have to wait, after all.

In an attempt to utilize your talent as an alchemist, you set up in a corner near a busy street and offer your services to repair things, with Leah to communicate more easily with potential clients.

While the idea was sound, very few people actually take you up on the offer. Only a handful of people come by with some sort of broken object for you to fix, and while you do so easily, it doesn't get you as much money as you had hoped. By the end of the day, you have enough to maybe last you two days. The good news is, you manage to get some info from a local. Apparently they offer the State Alchemy Exam once a week to any comers, and tomorrow is the day. Talk about luck.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1VBeQlmJJA&index=1&

You and Leah find a hotel as it gets dark, intending to stay the night and go to military headquarters tomorrow.

"We'd like a room for the night." Leah tells the person at the counter. "One bed."

"Oh my. Alright then, here's your key." the woman hands it over as you pay. "Have a nice night, dears."

The two of you find the tiny room and get yourselves settled in.

"Good, this is the cheapest room. That should save us some money." Leah says, bunching up her coat to use as a pillow. "I'm more comfortable on the floor, anyway."

It's getting pretty late.

You know Leah is used to sleeping on the ground when she goes out hunting, but you still don't feel right taking up the bed. You get her attention, then motion between her and the bed, indicating that you want her to use it.

"What, you don't want to be the one sleeping on the bed while I take the ground?" you can see the edge of Leah's mouth curl up just a bit. "Well, neither do I. Now how are we going to solve this?"

Eventually, you settle on sharing the bed, both remaining fully clothed. Leah places her rifle between the two of you, keeping her hands on it even as she sleeps. You know she can never get to sleep if she isn't holding it.

The bed is cheap, but it gets you a better night's sleep than in the crate. You consider asking Leah about something, but you were both so tired, you decided to let it go for now. The sleep is more important.

You both wake up early in the morning, then pay for a bit of breakfast at a nearby bakery. Hopefully that will fill you up for a while.

The two of you then head to Central Headquarters, where the exams take place.

"Not getting cold feet, are you?" Leah asks. "I know you won't have a problem passing, you can get the certification easily. Then you'll be set."

Leah is right. With your skill in alchemy, you won't have to worry about anything again once you pass this exam. You enter the huge building with your head held high.

The receptionist directs you to the testing center, and you find that you're the only person here this time around. Apparently this isn't uncommon, and it's far rarer to have more than one applicant at the same time.

A uniformed man comes up and hands you a form, which you fill out with all of your information.

"This test will consist of three portions, a written test, a practical demonstration, and a psychological evaluation." he tells you. "After taking all three, we review the results and get them back to you within the day, no waiting."

That's good to hear. You hand him back your registration form, and he looks it over.

"Very good... Iskander." he says, looking it over. "Right this way."

You start to follow the man, but he stops and turns around. You do the same to see Leah was still following you.

"I'm sorry miss, but the test must be taken alone." the official tells her. "I'm afraid you'll have to stay here."

You toss back a thumbs up to try and reassure her. Seeing it, she eases up a bit, then goes back to take a seat and wait.

You're lead into a room with a few desks, and sat at one with a test on it. You're told that you have two hours to finish. However, you manage to finish in just over half the time. It's not particularly hard material, and doesn't even come close to your extensive study.

You turn in your test, and you're then lead to another room, lined by guards. You see a man standing on a balcony looking down on the room, with a mustache and an eye patch. The leader of Amestris, Fuhrer King Bradley. He's going to be watching your exam personally.

"Now is the practical demonstration." the proctor tells you. "Do you need something to draw transmutation circles with?"

You shake your head, and the proctor backs up.

Okay guys back, but

Where are you getting all of this salt

The floor isn't made of salt, and I doubt you brought a bunch of salt with you

Is there some chemical reaction you can use to transmute concrete into salt that I'm not aware of?

I mean, this is my bad and I should have said this to begin with, but you need the materials, guys. Equivalent exchange and all that. You gotta tell me how it would work

>you need the materials, guys

You never told us what materials we have.
>>
>>49196558

>>
>>49196558
Wood is approximately 50% carbon, 42% oxygen, 6% hydrogen, 1% nitrogen, and 1% other elements. Not sure what the exact change from that formula to paper's formula is, but could we potentially use that to justify being able to transmutate paper?
>>
>>49196619
>>49196558
Oh, and also, the 1% other elements is mostly mainly calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium, iron, and manganese. Do you think there's enough of those in the floor to make paper?
>>
I fail to see the fascination with paper. Why not just use a crystalline iron isotope? That shit'd be cash money.
>>
>>49196558
Well that was a waste of fucking time. Just make a fuckhueg statue of a cat.
>>
>>49196558
we can turn elements into other elements and move shit around, obviously we're doing what most alchemists do and drawing mass up from the ground
>>
>>49196594
Yeah, like I said, that was my bad

>>49196581
Well, you guys could have brought some materials if you could afford them, but you're poor and saving your money for food and board, so that's why that didn't happen

As for what's around, it's basically just the concrete floor and what you could justify having on your person. So you could swing like a notebook, or whatever material your clothes would be made out of. Maybe some other common item or something. Being poor really does limit your options a bit, I'm sorry to say

I just don't want you guys thinking you can just make whatever you want whenever you want, that's not quite how alchemy works. Though yes, I should have made your resources clear from the start, that's my bad
>>
>>49196680

>>
>>49196693
>I just don't want you guys thinking you can just make whatever you want whenever you want

Except Alchemists literally can
>>
>>49196680
They don't change the elements into each other, that violate chemical laws. They rearrange them into new bonds and break the old ones.
>>
>>49196668
mostly from R.O.D or Kubo if you've seen it that and the idea of blocking bullets with paper is just cool to me at least.
>>
>>49196699
Well, it does so like a chemical reaction, not by changing atoms of one element into another, it modifies the molecular bonds
>>
>>49196619
Paper is generally produced from cellulose pulp, which is derived directly from wood or grass through either a chemical or physical pulping process. It should be an incredibly simple transmutation. Then you can alter its properties further from there.
>>
>>49196693
Do we have any iron coins? Maybe not an entire iron box, but if we're low on materials I'd be all for turning a few coins into that isotope. That'd be more reasonable, at least.
>>
>>49196699
No it doesn't.

You can't turn carbon into oxygen, you can however turn coal into diamonds
>>
>>49196730
ask if we can borrow some wooden chairs and desks, then turn the them into paper and do our act, otherwise were limited to what we have on us or just transmute the floor or something.
>>
>>49196747

>>
>>49196693
we're using the floor, duh
>>49196719
>>49196730
>not by changing atoms of one element into another
except that's exactly what they do, don't you understand that there is a LAW about not turning other shit into gold?
and even then, if it works the way you guys think, there's EASILY enough trace elements in the ground to provide shit like iron cubes and paper and salt, just reach deep enough into the earth and there it fuckin is.
>>
so... remember how we threw out calcium/bone alchemy as an idea really early? yeah the most common form of concrete is limestone based which is pretty calcium rich, would give us a ready supply of material in any urban environment.
>>
>>49196744
You could easily use some coins, yeah. Eats into your funds a bit, and you're limited to how much mass they have to use, but it's totally feasible. They'll probably be more copper or nickel and the like, though
>>
>>49196796

>>
>>49196699
>>49196715
>>49196718
No, alchemy's transmutation process is described as follows.
>Comprehension - Understanding the inherent structure and properties of the atomic or molecular makeup of a particular material to be transmuted, including the flow and balance of potential and kinetic energy within.

>Deconstruction - Using energy to break down the physical structure of the identified material into a more malleable state so as to be easily reshaped into a new form.

>Reconstruction - Continuing the flow of energy so as to reform the material into a new shape.

None of these steps involves the transformation of the elements themselves, only of the form they as a group take. Elements are the basic building blocks in alchemy and cannot be altered beyond changing their arrangement.

>>49196797
Actually, I believe that there's trace amounts of gold in whatever Ed used so that eventually, it just reverted into worthless shit that couldn't be used for anything. It lasted long enough to fake being pure gold, and would have been enough to get Ed arrested if it hadn't reverted back, but it obviously wasn't good enough to last long beyond the deal.

Even among the fandom, there's actually debate about this topic, so gold might be one of those pure exceptions that just exists in a system that we haven't been an answer to explain.
>>
>>49196846
yeah but he had to prepare the circle before hand
Elric is uncreative as FUCK with his power, or there's something we're missing because he should have easily fucking won every fight he had to be in by virtue of "you are now in an unbreakable box, good luck resisting arrest!"
alchemy is way, WAY up there on the power scale

Could we still create Amorphous Metals from them?
>>
>>49196900
decon and recon can easily be done at the sub-atomic level though, since, ya know, we can already do that in real life using very, very accurate lasers
>>
>>49196904
To my knowledge, weren't a lot of alchemists prepared for that sort of thing, like Roy with his gloves?

Though yes, alchemy is pretty ridiculous once you can use circle-less transmutation.
>>
>>49196946
well yeah, but remember that his main threat (the homonculi) couldn't use alchemy, granted some of them could break out of that by eating it or whatever, but if he ever decided to actually be creative with his BULLSHIT power he'd be changing the landscape on a whim to make his battles easier, summoning weapons from the EVERYWHERE to shoot/stab/destroy his enemies.
but he has this stupid "I won't kill" rule and it limits him so hard he almost loses a lot of his fights

>>
Alright guys, I'm still not convinced alchemists can just do whatever they want, considering all the times they actually make a point of following chemical laws and such. But you guys can still pull plenty of stuff from deep in the earth, that's true

But are the people of Amestris aware of sub-atomic particles? Hell, is alchemy that precise? Excluding the gold, I don't recall anything that might suggest it and it seems there is a lot of limitations based on being unable to reach sub-atomic manipulation. Hell, Ed and Al were very specific about what exactly they needed for a human body, indicating they couldn't change those particles.

Also, from what I'm finding, there seems to be actual evidence to say that the 'gold' Ed made wasn't actual gold so... Yeah.

Black powder is sulfur, charcoal (aka carbon), and potassium nitrate (potassium, nitrogen, and oxygen). Concrete has sulfate which can be broken into sulfur and oxygen, nitrogen can be from the air... Potassium is the hardest part to justify, but there's surely something in the ground that could provide it. Say if the ground beneath the concrete had the ashes of dead plant matter in it?

>>49197114
Tried my best to, but potassium is the thing holding it back because it doesn't occur in nature due to its high reactivity. However, it does show up in deposits of niter (potassium nitrate) which form from the decomposition of organic material in contact with the atmosphere, so maybe had died there and decomposed before being paved over?

Sorry if this sounds like bullshit, but I'm not a scientist (going into History and Political Science) so my explanation could certainly be wrong.

I don't really see alchemy working out in an interesting way for this quest unless laze comes up with some kind of alchemy mechanics for this quest

I'm going to explain something to you batch of morons.
Do you know WHY most State Alchemists have a gimmick?
Transmutation. Circles. They have to have circles prepared in advance. So they roll with one or two tricks, that they keep the circles for on their person. We have seen beyond the Gate of Truth. We don't NEED to use a silly gimmick, because we can just make shit up on the fly.
>>
>>49197572

no but salt/paper/iron tho
>>
>>49197660
Iron is something a lot of paper seem to do, it's just a general thing in my mind. Using the different forms of salt could be interesting, and paper's just a fun one in my mind and it's useful for our specific disability.
>>
>>49197698
*A lot of people seem to do

>>49197417

After rolling a few ideas around in your head, you step forward. You clap your hands together, then press them to the ground.

"No transmutation circle?" you hear one mutter. "That's just like the Fullmetal Alchemist did!"

Looking up, you can see a smile stretch across the Fuhrer's face.

You reach into the earth below the building and pull out all the components you need, combining them into various salts. You arrange them all in pillars in front of you, one for each type of salt, the various colors of each standing out from one another. When you finish, you stand back up.

"Hmm. Now that is interesting." you hear the Fuhrer from his perch. "Certainly more in-line than the last applicant that used alchemy without a circle. A more clear show of skill. This one shouldn't have any problems passing. Tell me boy, what's your name?"

You can't communicate from this distance. You kind of just motion to your neck.

"He hasn't said a word this whole time, Sir." the proctor notes. "I think he may be unable to speak, in fact."

"Is that so?" the Fuhrer chuckles. "And you want to join the military? That's amusing. Well, I'm sure we can find a way around it. With your talent, we'd be unwise to turn you away. Good luck with the rest of your exam."

Bradley leaves, and you're lead into another room, where you're given the psychological evaluation. Since you have to write everything out, it takes far longer than expected. You can see that it tries the proctor's patience.

Eventually you finish, and you rejoin Leah in the waiting area.

Transmute a black paper mustache and wear it giving a thumbs up. If we end up going the paper boy alchemist route, we need to use paper more imaginatively.

Brotherhood is the original.
>>
So is it crazy that I think we really ought to carry a gun, just in case? Just a small sidearm, something along the lines of a Walther P08. It always seemed odd that no State Alchemist did so. After all, we may find ourself in a situation where hiding our position may be advisable, or where combat Alchemy is a less than ideal solution.
>>
>>49197974
100% agree
>>
>>49197974
If we do its gotta be custom Mausers
>>
>>49197974
Could we shoot bullets made out of pure ninshu?

For real though, a simple handgun can be a more practical approach to some situations than spamming salty paper bombs all the time.
>>
>>49197963
>>49197927
I know brotherhood is the original I was referring to the 2003 anime which was animated first hence the original probably should have just said that to avoid the confusion.
>>
>>49197909
He's still not very Hitlery. Bradley is (officially) a career soldier who came to power through relatively conventional means. Hitler was a pog-ass dispatch runner who only served one hitch, and then came to power through sensationalist populism.
>>
>>49197992
Mausers are okay, stupidly long-barreled Mausers are not. Overcompensation is not good when we're to romance Martel/Olivier/Sheska.
>>
>>49198039
Who we need to romance in this game is Paninya.
>>
>>49197992
That's asinine. We're an Alchemist, not a nazi werewolf. I said something small and practical. Something we can conceal reasonably well, and that won't draw extraordinary attention when we do use it.
>>
>>49198014
I'm pretty sure that first suggestion is banned by the Geneva Convention.

We need to show our peers who has it bigger around here.
>>
>>49197992
Long barreled Mausers are only acceptable with the stock conversion to make them a carbine. Regular Mauser is fine for a concealable.
>>
>>49198098
Maybe Laze can allow us to have more than one.
>>
>>49198105
We already do it by being a tall, silently intimidating alchemist. We carry the gun for emergency surprises.
>>49198124
Only if we subject ourselves to more ninshu.

In response to the question, you give a smile while pulling out some paper, while stressing the fact that you received praise from the Fuhrer himself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ml-jhHJA7s0&index=61&

"That's incredible!" Leah suddenly hugs you, which surprises you. That's never happened before. It's short lived however, as she lets go momentarily and backs off a bit. She looks slightly embarrassed that she did it, but keeps talking. "I knew you could do it. You're going to do great things, I just know it. I wish I could join you, but I would have to go through standard training, and probably just be stuck on some other assignment somewhere. There's no guarantee we could be assigned together. So I think I'm just going to keep hunting. I could just travel with you, but I don't want to only be a burden to you, making you pay for me. So just promise me you'll be careful, alright? Please don't end up like Marc. I need you to stay safe."

We're not gonna leave her to deal with those chimera thugs alone. She can go through training while we set up a deal to have her be our interpreter.

You don't intend to leave Leah to fend for herself. You write out in no uncertain terms that you will do whatever you can to get her in with you, and that even if you can't, you still want her to tag along.

While she's still unsure, you keep insisting, and she decides to at least see what can be done.

In a couple of hours, the proctor from before emerges with an envelope and a small box. He hands them both to you.

"Congratulations." he says. "You're now a certified State Alchemist. This watch will serve as your identification."

He opens the box and points the watch out to you. Before you concern yourself with it or your certificate, you bring up the matter of Leah. Stressing that she's your interpreter, and a crack shot at that, you tell the man that you want he as your attache translator/bodyguard.

"Well, I think it might be possible." the man says. "It's not unheard of. We'll have to send it up through the Fuhrer, and subject her to a test of sorts, but the Fuhrer seemed to like you, so there's that. We'll see. I'll send it up and get back to you."

The man leaves, and you look back to Leah. She doesn't smile very much, but she most certainly is now.

"Well, nothing's set in stone yet, let's not get ahead of ourselves." she tells you. "Come on, let's get a look at that certificate."

You open the envelope and take out the sheet of paper, with the Amestrian seal and a message from the Fuhrer. Leah reads it aloud.

"This official document certifies that the nation of Amestris, prefecture of the Generalissimo appoints the name Silent to Iskander Steiner, in the name of Fuhrer King Bradley."
