Fighting through the pain, you push yourself to stand on your own two legs. Raising your eyes, you look through the glare of the afternoon sun to creatures in front of you. Spirits? Demons? Gods? Your sensei and the dragon defy your previous notions of what it meant to be powerful. You're knocked back by another gust of air, and the wounds all over your body inflame themselves freshly. As you lay in the dirt next to your broken friend, Kichiro, the throbbing sensation left over absorbs you. Your aching head draws you in and distracts you from the world around you.

A few short moments pass, and the disorientation clear. Thrusting yourself forward, you manage to climb to your knees. Looking in the distance, the two titans clash again and again. Your sensei's huge sword cloaks him in a blue fire that's beating back the emerald glow.

In front of you, Kichiro starts to wake. Your instincts as the team medic take over, and you quickly search for your canteen. "Don't move!" Your voice cracks as you speak, unaware of the tension you were holding in your body and the dryness of your throat. Taking a small sip, the water helps to clear your senses and relax you. Your friend's eyes are only partially cracked open, and you can see he's attempting to speak to no avail. Slowly, you pour sips of water between his parched, dusty lips. He greedily laps it down. You can only imagine the pain he's in. His arms have been especially burnt and broken, from the repeated impacts.

"Just be quiet, and try to conserve your energy." you earnestly suggest.

In the distant battlefield, numerous elemental blasts explode from the surrounding forests and mountains. The Cloud Shinobi seem to have arrived en masse, and you get to work in attempting to light a signal fire.

Dragging your bum leg, you gather the shredded debris of splintered trees. Gathering the tinder, you find yourself stuck without a way to light it. Kichiro, though silent, has been watching you. He starts to croak, and beckons you towards him by repeatedly wiggling a finger in a clawing motion. You step over and kneel down, looking him over. You hardly imagine he could help in this state.

With the same finger that he was trying to get your attention with, he starts to tap the ground. At first you don't understand. When he drives his finger into the dirt and smoke rises, you get the message. No matter how minimal his chakra is, Kichiro can at the very least produce embers.

Looking up, you no longer see your sensei's blue glow. He must have left the battlefield due to his wounds. That's what you hope, at least.

You have to inch his body away from the fire as it slowly grows. Throwing thick green foliage onto the small blaze, billowing smoke starts to rise. It takes roughly twenty minutes for someone to arrive and investigate. Several Cloud Shinobi approach, recognizing your leaf headbands. "Hanto's students! We found them! Call the medic squad for a retrieval!!"

Hearing those words causes a great weight you didn't know you were carrying to be lifted. While you thought you had been truly hardened by the forest, today has been a grim reminder of how big the world truly is.

As you're told to lay down onto the stretcher, you look over at your friend. He had to nearly kill himself. If Ai hadn't been here to go get help, then Hanto would have died. Shutting your eyes as you're carried through the partially destroyed forest, a strange sensation starts to well up inside of you. You recognize how ridiculous it is to expect yourself to be able to do anything in a situation where Tailed Beasts are involved. Shutting your eyes, you breath deeply.

But still, your heart fights against that logic. With a gulp, you open your eyes and speak. "Is my sensei okay?"

The medics carrying you don't look down when they respond, focused on their task. "He's been grievously injured, but no one has any doubts in their mind that he'll recover."

You gulp again, this time with a slight smile. Everyone's going home, at least.

The fighting is still going on in the distance. The tailed beast has yet to relent.

That's more or less it. The current situation is that you were on the first mission with your squad since being a Chunin. You've journeyed to the land of Thunder, and shortly after reaching a military base to investigate some murders, it was revealed that Jashinists had deeply infiltrated their ranks. A cultist surprise attack was fended off, but not before they could unleash a tailed beast from another part of the military establishment. The establishment is now destroyed, Kichiro used the 3rd of the 8 gates to buy everyone time to regroup. Hanto has a wound on his stomach from engaging with the cultists, and he has been keeping the tailed beast busy while Ai left for reinforcements and you healed Kichiro.

Now you've been picked up by the Cloud forces. They're presumably taking you to their base camp.

"What do you intend to do?"

The medic turns his neck down towards you this time. "What? You mean about the tailed beast?"

Well, yeah, you think. After a brief pause he responds. "Killing it is impossible. These things are more natural disaster than adversary. The most we can do is hope to contain it, until someone capable of either driving it off or sealing it arrives. We're lucky if a few people in a generation can do that."

So, the only chance of fighting a weapon of mass destruction is another weapon of mass destruction.

You notice that you're going away from the direction of the fighting. Of course you are, you think to yourself. Even still, the sensation that you should leap off of this stretcher and go and fight is still tearing at you.

With a deep sigh, you shut your eyes and attempt to rest. An hour or so later, you've arrived at the base camp for the Cloud shinobi. It's easy to see it was hastily assembled using a platoon of Earth Ninjutsu users. You're led into a stone tent, and they rest your stretcher on a cot. They go through the process of cleaning and stitching any injuries you have. There isn't much you can do but wait and hope.

Generally, you've always been at the forefront of any mission. Right in the face of the danger. Even when fighting Jounin you never backed down.

The anticipation is clear cut in your tensed body language. It has no where to go, however. After getting tied back together, they allow you to wander the camp some. They tell you that a caravan will be taking you back to the Leaf Village.

You ask about Ai, and they say that she was already on her way home. After reaching the capital, she was dismissed despite very stubborn protests.

Kichiro and Hanto have both been temporarily moved to the Cloud Village for intensive care. They weren't suitable for long term travel.

Your heart feels even heavier when you know you won't get to see them before heading home.

The next morning, you're delivered to the Leaf Village. You'll have to find out the details of the attack somehow later on once you're home. The ride back is bumpy, but calm.

Arriving at the Leaf, at once you're instructed to go to the Hokage's office for a debriefing.

The fatigue and pain have all but vanished after the peaceful ride back. Now your body is mostly just stiff, and your mind troubled. Sitting in the quiet waiting room feels impossibly anxious after the experience of fighting that colossus. Mixtures of emotion swirl around inside of you.

You're called in, and Naruto looks appropriately serious. "Welcome back." he says. You take several steps forward.

Every adult I know would be pissing themselves from fear, but I can see from your clenched fists that the only thing you wanted to do was keep fighting."

With a long exhale, you relax. It's true. "There wasn't anything I could do."

Naruto crosses his arms, and shuts his eyes briefly. You imagine that he's playing back several experiences that he himself has had. "I know. Anyone short of me or the most powerful Jounin in the village are helpless against that sort of monster."

He sits back down. "There's really more pressing issues at hand. If you want to help, you should focus on moving forward. This situation changes a whole lot about the Cultists."

That's right, you think to yourself. "Yeah! How would they get a hold of a tailed beast? They don't seem organized enough for something like this."

Again, you sense that previous memories are circulating through Naruto's mind as he speaks. "When you don't have anything at all, it makes it easy to give your life up for nothing. Between rising apathy in the youth, and the propagation of theft, being an immortal hedonist has it's draws. It's amazing how quickly people forget the terrors of war."

There's a few moments of silence. He looks down at his books, and flips a page. "We'll talk more about this later. For now, I'm just glad to see you're alright. Ai is back in the village, but Kichiro and Hanto are still in intensive care in the Cloud. I'll be having you go on a mission with Mirai's squad in two days from now. I'll give you the details then, as a group. Any questions?"

Heading home, you retreat to the warm safety of your bed. You sleep until well into noon the next day, needing the time to recover both physically and mentally. Sleep comes to you easily enough, speaking with Naruto always seems to help reorganize your thoughts. It feels good to go through the normal motions of brushing your teeth and cooking a small breakfast.

Your brother is presumably asleep or working. You elect not to disturb him in the case of the former. You're sure he'll want to hear everything at some point, however.

Though it's already noon, the rest of the day is yours. Tomorrow you already have another mission. Two, in a way. Naruto said that you'll be joining Mirai's squad, so it's possible that what Naruto has requested of you is completely unrelated.

Rummaging through some of your stuff, you find the scroll that Kakashi gave you. Three paths leading from the mountain. One to the forest, one to a lake, and one to the plains.

It's mystifying. Either way, you'll have to prepare for tomorrow. What would you like to do?

You want to visit your team mate, and see how she's doing. You know that you were feeling conflicted about not fighting, so it's possible she may as well. Especially considering what the Cloud shinobi had said. It doesn't take you very long to find her house now that you know where it is. As usual, the building is sheathed in darkness save for thin beams of light coming through the trees. Though there's a breeze, the forest keeps the small clearing's air still while the branches above sway gently.

Stepping up, you knock on the door several times. There's no response, as expected. Just when you think you should leave, the door comes ajar slightly, Ai peeking through at you. "Hello Takeshi."

"Hello." you say with a grin. "How are you doing?"

She looks down, at your bandaged leg. "I should be the one asking if you are well."

You start to chuckle, and rub the back of your head. "Me? I'm great, just a little stiff. The Cloud ninja healed me up pretty quickly!"

She opens the door fully. "Good. Did you just come here to talk?"

She's clenching her fists, and you can clearly see that she's much less adept at dealing with the same emotions you were feeling. It's also possible that she hasn't had the chance to speak to anyone like you did with Naruto.

"Well, I understand how you feel. You were the one who saved us in the end, though. With one less person, I don't think we'd have been able to contact reinforcements. You didn't just help us, but everyone in the Cloud!"

She rubs her arm. "I suppose.."

You're not quite sure how to take this, but you imagine that her agreement is a sign of acceptance. There's a few moments of quiet, so you decide to ask her a question. "There's also something else. I was wondering if you knew any Jutsu you might be able to teach me."

She looks up and stares directly at you, blankly. Against her stone cold gaze you can't help but gulp uncomfortably while she thinks. "I believe I have at least one technique that could benefit you. Are you aware of the Roof Tile Shuriken Jutsu?"

You nod. "Yeah, I think so. It's a non elemental jutsu, right?"

She nods back as well. "Correct."

Already, Ai is going through handsigns. "That's right. Lesson one, this is how you use it."

Silently, rocks from the bushes nearby float into the air. They sling themselves at you one by one, and you're forced to start leaping and hopping away from Ai's house. It's hard, and you're pushed to the edge of the treeline. Just as you take a breath, she's already sprinting at you. "Lesson two, you can use this Jutsu while on the move."

As she's running, more rocks float up from your flank on the corner of your peripheral. They're slung at you in a single storm this time, and though you leap away it's too difficult to dodge. A softball sized projectile strikes your liver like a fist. The wind is knocked out of you, and you're thrown to the ground.

Ai is running directly at you, and you shut your eyes to brace for what will surely be a brutal attack.

After a few seconds of nothing, you open them. She plants her foot on your head. "Get up, dummy."

You look up. "That wasn't fair at all!"
