Welcome back, everyone, to the fifty-fifth installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest. You already know who I am, and today you are still Admiral Roarke Starwind of the Iron Kestrels.

Last time, you made some important announcements on air, but the interview isn't over yet.

"I have..." Gretchen says, getting out her PC and bringing up a list of bulletpoints, "...some questions submitted by our viewers."
>>
It's time!

Welp, this should be interesting. Wonder if Jesus will throw something at us?

First things first. This poll will be running all night, let's see who you want to put as the de-facto head of your harem.

http://www.strawpoll.me/11134115
>>
>>49120807

Going for democratic.

We shall have the Parliament of Pirate Queens.
>>
>>49120836
>women
>agreeing on things
>>
>>49120836

Keep in mind that this means you're giving Karen, Rosita, and Clemmy a vote. May Jove have mercy on your soul.
>>
>>49120807
NO HEAD

OUR HAREM WILL BE A DEMOCRACY!
>>
Missed, last session, and I'm disappointing with anons. You lost the opportunity to insult Fairy over saying an attack was unprovoked when litterally everyone knows that Sol and Avalon had been shooting at each other for a while. Seriously, that bit was silly and dumb and everyone knows it.
>>
>>49120887

Fuck me, you win either way as you watch us squirm.
>>
>>49120807
and already a nest of samefagging.
>>
>>49120807
You know what, I'm gonna pick Sam, if Fatima wouldn't murder Lori then it would be her

>>49120836
Democracy won't work for this anon we need leadership in a harem, almost all of the girls are too biased or have rivalries to get anything done fairly. Theres a reason harem's usually have a head wife

>>49120918
Gotta play nice for now anon, when we form our kingdom we can release all the info we know on both sides
>>
>>49120887
Dear gods.. it'll end with Karen making weapons of mass destruction and getting them through thanks to Clemmy and one other wife.
>>
>>49120954
>You know what, I'm gonna pick Sam, if Fatima wouldn't murder Lori then it would be her
Fatima wouldn't murder Lori though. She would want to, but she's responsible.
>>
>>49120909
To be fair avalon made a fuck up either way and I am still down with the military more than I am with a bunch of green weenie sucking nutjobs.
>>
>>49120996
No, the Gate attack itself is was a clean attack on a military target.
>>
>>49120987
She would be heavily biased and would constantly cause problems with her you can't have that in a leadership position.

>>49120958
Thats the biggest problem, if Sam and Karen or Rosita and Clemmy vote as a block then problems are going to come up especially if they get another girl on their side and win a majority
>>
>>49120954

Meh, I'm good with any of the decisions on the poll really, just like the idea of our wives collaborating.
>>
>>49120954
>implying Sam wouldnt also be down with murder
Special forces military pilots probably have a low opinion of paladins.
>>
Anyone voting Democratic needs to see this. >>49120887
>>
>>49120887

But what if i wanted to have Clemmy be head waifu
>>
>>49121045
But Sam isn't from a religion who are the biggest Greenmen hates in history
>>
>>49121048
We've seen it, anon. It's gonna be fucking hilarious.

RA RA DEMOCRACY!

and shes from a religion taught to follow the instructions of the husband.

If we tell her please dont harm lori, she wont.
>>

I dont know man, I think everyone hates greenmen especially anyone in the military.

"Going by boards, here. I'll start with the ones from the official JNN boards, then the military boards, and finally...GYchan. First off...'blondes, brunettes, or redheads?'" Gretchen waggles her eyebrows at you.

You grin, and answer without hesitation, "All of the above."

She nods, "Next is 'How did someone as talented as you end up as a pirate?'"

You hesitate for a moment, but your brother is no longer alive and you don't need to protect his job anymore, "My parents were low-level employees for a major Europan mech company." The only reason you don't specify Bucephalus is because, in your opinion, Bahamutcorp deserves the suspicion too, "They were killed and my brother was crippled, but it was covered up. I left home at fifteen to find independent work on California Station and ended up as one of the Iron Kestrels."

She frowns, "That's a bit barebones, but maybe it's a subject for another day...or perhaps a biography! Alright, here's a third. 'Admiral, I've been a fan of yours for some time, but no matter how good I get at piloting, I just don't understand girls! Can you give me any tips?'" Gretchen smiles, "Aww. That's just a little bit adorable."

>[What say?]
>>
>>49121088
...so the people voting for democracy are trolls. Good to know.
>>
>>49121030

Or worse, the ties between those two blocs cause them to never get along AND make Fatima the inevitable tiebreaker and therefore effective decision-maker anyway.
>>
>>49121171
No, I actually do think that a democratic harem would be the best way to make the 5 of them civil and sisterly. I just thought that you guys were the trolls and that the other answer was more convincing.
>>
>>49121045

I'm pretty sure Samantha actively talked out the plan that involves saving her with Roarke.
>>
>>49121116
Lurkers anon, but they should post in the thread to try and see how it matches up to the poll

>>49121128
I would like to hear Wong's opinion on this

>>49121145
>Well anonymous women are a lot like a fine mech, its takes understanding and a whole lot of elbow grease and sometimes it won't be anything but a burden and a pain in the ass. But you always know theres no machine you would rather be with
>>
>>49121145
> As with most things in life Confidence is key, Though an excellent soundtrack and perfect hair help
>>
>>49121145
"Women are people too. Get to know them, and treat them with respect. Having a silver tongue helps sure, but people tend to figure out what you really are after dealing with you for a while."
>>49121202
That and democracy's without effective protections for minority rights tend to suck horribly. Lori in a democratic regime is a terrible idea.
>>
>>49121231
>I would like to hear Wong's opinion on this

We already have. This be a woman who thought that something extremely foul was afoot when her fiancee refused to bargain but still wanted to return to mars to fulfill her duty to her father.
>>
>>49121145
>"gotta have 10 cool, brah."
>>
>>49121145
Do you know a guy named Thunderbird?
>>
>>49121145

Listen to them.

No matter what many men believe women don't speak some alien language that only other women understand, and nine times out of ten they actually tell you what they want.

For that other time, intuition, luck, and a very good memory.

Above all else remember, you're a man, act like one.

Don't whine, don't quibble. Women want a man who takes care of his business, not a fool who can't manage his own affairs.

Take care of yourself, become the man you always wanted to be, and I guarantee you won't have to find a woman, she'll find you.
>>
Since Samantha obviously isn't gonna win, can we have a 2-option poll between democracy and fatima?
>>
>>49121145
Ceasar
>>
>>49121145
Well, girls are like anyone else. Some differences in terms of hormones and chemistry, but like anyone it's a matter of respect, knowing your limits, and knowing theirs. Sometimes you need to say no, sometimes you need to push or back away. Of course, you have to know about your girl as well. Of course, that goes both ways, girls. Treat your partner well and desire to be treated well yourself.
>>
>>49121145
Be really hot and have a bitching mecha.
>>
>>49121318

Early in the thread Anon, she might pull a surprise win before it's all said and done.
>>
>>49121318
Don't think we need it anon, Democracy should have to beat both Sam and Fatima's votes

>>49121330
I'm thinking Shinji, Caesar already got his girl
>>
>>49121330
Ceasar has a girl and he got her with barely any effort on his point.
>>
>>49121351
>Democracy should have to beat both Sam and Fatima's votes
Thats not how a three way vote works thunder.
>>
HERE IA AM!

what are you thinking, why does any of you think that "Harem Democracy" could end well?

We need a true competent leader...

Vote for FATIMA!
>>
>>49121358
>Naomi seduced him to keep the son of Merrow from being able to kill the queen who looks like her
Clever girl

>>49121390
Because they're both voting for a single head instead of a democracy so it can be assumed both are against the democratic option, but its just a thought its not my poll to run
>>
>>49121231

Fatima personally believes (as you've already seen) in making her husband's life easier rather than harder. Consequently, as much as she might like to core the Anseis' torso with the Tarrasque's primary mega beam cannon and melt the cockpit to slag with the Countess still inside, doing that would cause problems for Roarke. Besides, she doesn't know that Roarke would prefer to give her back to Avalon, so to her it's just a matter of waiting until Lori is up in front of a Martian firing squad. It's not a difficult wait, because she is getting her special day at last and that's occupying much of her time.
>>
>people voting for dictatorship instead of democracy
And you call yourselves pirates!
>>
>>49121256

Avalonian hussies belong in the gulag.
>>
>>49121492
Were basically the King of the Kestrels anon, we don't have anyone vote in the crew. At best were an Oligarchy
>>
>>49121472

Do martian nobility respond to wedding invites off world.
>>
>>49121351
>>49121358

It's really more like Naomi got Caesar. She's an assertive mechajock, he's a shy nerd. She even asked him out rather than the other way around.
>>
>>49121435
Yeah, that's why democracy with more than 2 options doesn't work, it is in fact mathematically proven that when you have more than 2 options the system just break.

In fact... the relationship with them is ours, and none of them should have any power about how we interact with the others... Everything about this is just bonkers to me.

but if a have to make a narrow choice... I guess i don't want the emotional, imprudent, impulsive gothic waifu in charge
>>
>>49121516
>we don't have anyone vote in the crew
didn't we give this whole big speech before we fought the countess that, yes, we're only admiral because our crew choose to follow us?
>>
>>49121492
Have you ever heard of democratic pirates?
>>
>>49121472
>You shrug, "It's tradition, isn't it? I have offers from the UJCIDF as well, and I'm sure her people will offer me something. She's an ace, a useful political tool, but not unbeatable. I don't think she'll make enough of a difference to consider it betrayal of the Solar System if I just hear what her allies can pay me for her return. If it was a Green Man, it would be a different matter, but the Countess is human, I don't want to just condemn her to a miserable death for a war she didn't start."
>Fatima tries to scowl, but it doesn't have her usual intensity, and after a moment she just sighs happily and rests in your arms. "I will tell the Caliph that you are a good man with a sinful heart that requires wise counsel. I will tell him that even though she has taken lives, you insist on the honorable treatment of captives.
I kinda read this as her being aware that we'd really rather she not die.
>>
>>49121517

They do when an Ahmad hand-writes the invitation and guarantees they won't be robbed this time.

The only loose end there is Red Siren.
>>
>>49121565
Voting to accept a leader doesn't make it a democracy, it makes this either an elective monarchy, or a tribal set up
>>
>>49121565
Yeah but they didnt vote on it. You think people voted to be led by miles?
>>
>>49121565
They follow us because they want, and it implies respecting our decisions with no right of vote.

Yeah, we are a monarchy, even in the sense of taking what we want by force of arms.
>>
>>49121540

Would it make more sense if I told you that if the harem deploys as a squad, Roarke would be in command and the head wife would effectively be his first officer?
>>
>>49121601
>>49121603
>>49121606
You can't deny, at least, that it's a bottom-up form of rulership instead of a top-down form.
>>
>>49121606
You do realize Roarke's existence is a democracy right?
>>
>>49121611
So the head wife is a type of second in comand in the ausence of Roarke?

Thanks for your answer ^^

Sttil voting Fatima.
>>
>>49121635
We can deny it though, who made the decision to go to Mars? How made the decision to attack the Cruise ship? How made the decision to save Suleiman?
>>
>>49121635
I'm pretty sure its 90% roarke just doing what he wants and everyone else going along with it because they dont have much choice in the matter.
>>
>>49121690
They get loot, food, and pussy so it ain't all bad
>>
>>49121678
>>49121690
Everyone made the choice. Literally everyone who followed us did so because they chose too.

If we wanted to go to Mars and Oda or someone else couldn't go for whatever reason, what would we have done? Forced them to go? Threatened them?
>>
>>49121635
Bottom? No, it's almost horizontal.
Free association an all, the power that unite the iron kestrels come in the same amount from Roarke and from the rest, without any part they wouldn't be the same.
>>
>>49121726
Joining up with a kingdom because they are strong doesnt mean you have any impact in what they do. Plus when we first met Oda we beat him up and made him join us.
>>
>>49121721

That's basically the pirate benefits package right there in any case.

Hell why else become a pirate if it wasn't for the loot, the food, or indeed, as we have seen many times before because of your dice, the pussy?
>>
>>49121726
Making a choice is not voting, having the power of choice doesn't make things a democracy.
>>
>>49121783
The grand adventure, the job stability, the freedom from space taxes?

>>49121726
We would have told him to go, first rule of being a pirate captain is don't look weak
>>
>>49121660
Please explain
>>
>>49121758
Why, with all that about the impetus of power coming equally from all individuals, that's sounding a lot like democracy, anon.

>>49121762
No. We beat up Oda, and he chose to follow us. If he had turned tail and fled like a saturday-morning badguy (which Oda technically is), none of us would have batted an eye.

>>49121799
if it's not a democracy, than its CERTAINLY not a dictatorship.
>>
>>49121809

Point takes, Space taxes are quite the bitch.
>>
>>49121566
Yes actually most pirate ships were democratic except for in battle where the captains word was law
>>
>>49121828
It's meta kouhai. We all vote cause it's a quest. duh.

You clear your throat, "Well, women are a lot like a fine mech, its takes understanding and a whole lot of elbow grease and sometimes it won't be anything but a burden and a pain in the ass. But you always know theres no machine you would rather be with. You respect your mech. You treat it right. Again, women are the same way." You sigh, "That's the part you already knew, I'm sure. Here's the part you want to hear. You've gotta have thunder."

"Thunder?" Gretchen questions.

"Chutzpah, confidence. You need to put yourself out there and walk tall with the wind in your mane and your themesong playing." You snap your fingers, "Oh, and you wouldn't pilot your mech without reading the instruments, so you should listen to your woman too. Yeah." It's hard to articulate things that come naturally.

Gretchen's lips quirk into a smirk, "Breaking news, women apparently very much like twenty-meter weapons platforms."

"Well, they're both fun to be inside." You wink at her, and she bursts into gales of laughter along with the audience.

"Alright, next question, before someone else in the audience throws her underwear at you. What is the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for you?"

>[What say?]
>>
>>49121857
It doesn't help that the IRS have control over a fleet of mega heavy mechs that have Mv 0.
>>
>>49121886
Hehehe, epic meta.
>>
>>49121845
Its literally a dictatorship. One guy is in charge and if anyone doesn't like the decisions he makes they can fuck off because he is going to do them anyway. Its a largely benevolent dictatorship but still a dictatorship.
>>
>>49121828
The entire quest is about voting on actions.
>>
>>49121875
Granted historical pirates worked that way but we don't

>>49121891
Shit I don't remember anything romantic that the girls did, any ideas?
>>
>>49121891
"You're trying to get me in trouble, aren't you?"
>>
>>49121894

What they really have is the Wels-class. Or whatever the Martian equivalent is, a big honking battleship that could probably destroy a colony even if it doesn't break it in half the way the Avalon megaships do. This isn't quite gundam because the ships are actually useful.
>>
>>49121909
That's Anarchy, anon. "I'm gonna go do what I want, you all can go along with it if you want. Or not, I guess."
>>
>>49121845
Democracy normally consists of 50% +1 guy imposing their will on the rest. I disagree with you in that.

I think it's more like a normal job contract, you either accept or reject it, either way you don't get to vote about how it should be.
>>
>>49121891
>"A girl painted my entire mech for me!"
Let's take a crack at Miles.
>>
>>49121952

Karen did make us some sweetass thunder gloves.

If I remember right we used them on old fuckface back on mars to great effect.
>>
>>49121891
Clemmy and Sam abandoned their careers for us
Red spoils us a lot
Karen builds our mech advancements
Fatima chose us over her people
No matter what we say though try to brown nose all the waifus
>>
>>49121998
Yep
>>
>>49121985
What would we do if someone in our crew seriously fucks up in a battle, or pulls some shit we don't like? Maroon them? Make them walk the space plank?
>>
>>49121891
"Well that's a tough question Gretchen. Mainly because most of the romantic gestures I can think off the top of my head may or may not have been entirely legal. I'm going to go with Red Siren helping me out when Fairchild wrongly accused me of mass murder. Mainly because I believe you already know about that one."
>>
>>49121891
Honestly, in terms of romance it would be when they were there when I needed them most. Don't get me wrong, the big stuff is amazing, but the support of a loved one during a long trial or slog really helps and makes it worth it.
>>
>>49122042
Pertty good anon, backing
>>
>>49122042

Agreed.

Seconding this one.
>>
>>49122037
>seriously fucks up in a battle
Accidents happen, not everybody is invincible
>pulls some shit we don't like
Like make us murderously angry? I guess we shoot them
>>
>>49121998
Anarchy according to google is the absence of government and absolute freedom of the individual, regarded as a political ideal. Except there is a government and we are it and if people dont follow our orders they risk getting kicked out of the group and becoming easy pickings for the military.

A dictatorship is defined as a form of government where a group of countries (or Country) is ruled by one person or political entity. Sounds a whole fucking lot like us.
>>
>>49122037
We technically could do that, but i think there are some other interesting options.

Like sending them to Clemmy for "Reeducation". LOL

it really depends on what they have done
>>
>>49121891
"Well that's a tough one... I could talk about how a special someone left everything she knew so we could be together, or how a certain someone tried to take over my crew in memorandum when she thought I was gone, Or how someone came clean and let me in on a part of their life few others were privy to, or the little things like having a home cooked meal ready after a hard day, or just always being there. I guess what I'm saying is my life has a touch more romance than some but It's not just one thing, being together is probably the most meaningful gesture."
>>
>>49122095
Like steals money from us, or run during a battle
>>
>>49122037
I they fuck up probably not much. If they screw with us depending on how hard they do it it could be kicking them out or imprisoning them or just killing them.
>>
>>49122042
Backing this too.
>>
>>49122099
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarcho-capitalism

Try this, thanks me later.
>>
>>49122037
Have Oda lecture them?
>>
>>49122099
We don't have a government, though, we have a voluntary heirececal social structure that people have chosen to be a part of.

And before you say "that's the exact same thing," it's not, because people are free to opt out of our "government" without any punishment.
If you do that in the real world, you go to jail for tax evasion.
>>
>>49122115
>Or someone who painted my mecha for me...

Backing this too.
>>
>>49122174
They don't stay with us if they aren't part of the crew though. They would have to leave and go live some place else
>>
>>49122174
>without any punishment
Well beyond the military being easily able to wreck their shit and losing access to our docking and repair facilities.
>>
>>49122174
Yeah, i agree, this is what i was trying to say, but you put it in words much better than me.
>>
>>49122214
>>49122174
And probably losing their mechs and ships. If they decide to go against us suddenly they make them selves a good target for piracy.
>>
>>49122042
This
>>
>>49122197
How is that a punishment?
If you've decided to leave the crew because you don't like being an Iron kestrel anymore, then that's a lifestyle choice, not a punishment.

>>49122214
>>49122247
Fine, then. It doesn't have any punisment that we mandate.
The punishment for the military hounding them down is not something we do to people who disobey us.
>>
>>49122214
>Well beyond the military being easily able to wreck their shit
Not always true man, if one just wants to leave the kestrels he can probably go with no harm, the exception is the case that we started something, like stealing from us or something, but that is another story.
>and losing access to our docking and repair facilities.
That is not a punishment, it's the loss of work privilages.
>>
>>49122290
I dont see how us deciding to steal all their shit not being a punishment.

You smile warmly. There's a muffled chorus of d'aaws from the audience, and some girl wings her bra at you with remarkable accuracy.

"I remember that last one!" Gretchen comments with a perky smile. "So here's a change of space. This one's pretty concise, 'Should Bucephalus Heavy Industries bring back the Thoroughbred MP for use against Avalon?'"

>[What say?]
>>
>>49122317
>it's the loss of work privilages
Which we took away because they went against us. Taking something away because someone did something you dont like is a punishment.
>>
>>49122322
As long as they dont bring it back to use it against me.
>>
>>49122319
Nobody's losing their mechs.
If it was a Kestrel mech, then it wasn't theirs in the first place.
If it was their own mechs that they had before joining the Kestrels, then they get to keep it when/if they leave.
>>
>>49122322

"I work with a former employee of theirs who may be happy to see his work finally being acknowledged. But the only people who pilot thoroughbreds have been aces and heavily customized them. So it's hard to say for sure."
>>
>>49122322
"The Thoroughbred MP is a fine mecha frame. I'd say a conditional yes, noting both that some fine tuning to integrate new technology would be a good idea, and that I don't have access to their books to tell how cost effective mass production would be."
>>
>>49122322
>"Don't you know that Thoroughbreds are cursed? Wouldn't want any of that, no-sir-ee"

Unless we decide to steal them because we are pirates and stealing mechs is what we do. No reason not to if they decide to go against us.

>>

Really? Would Roarke just imeadiatly steal form anyone who leave the Kestrels?

No, put they could become an target like everyone else.

The Pirates ARE NOT an perfect ancap society because they are criminals even to the normal standarts of such society, because they do not respect propriety of others and live by the rule of might.... but still, the way they operate is very similar to some kind of voluntarist anarchist association.

And taxes are theft too.

Once again, no, this isn't the same thing, because people who left the Kestrels aren't "punished" worse than people who were never part of it.

>Imagine if a waifu was captured and someone didnt want to go because it was too dangerous. He would at least hold all their mechs ransom.
I certainly wouldn't vote for that. Besides, the whole thing would probably be framed more as Roarke asking his friends to go on a suicidal mission with him, rather than telling everyone to go and some people choosing not too.

"The frame is perfectly good, but I've never actually seen a completely factory-fresh Thoroughbred MP, just heavily customized ace models. Perhaps if they updated it with current technology? You'll have to forgive me, I'm a pilot, not an industrialist, so I don't know how cost-effective mass production would be. It makes for great ace customs, at least."

"Mmm, it's interesting to note the little differences like the chest shape and shoulder ratio between it and Bahamutcorp's Bass Frame, sold to the UJCIDF for their SOUL squads." Gretchen remarks.

"Just to A, actually." You comment.

She stares at you and blinks, "What do you mean and how do you know that?"

You shrug, "I've seen Squad B's machines, they're all Bucephalus-engineered and at least one is a genuine Thoroughbred MP. Or rather was, since it's on board my ship now." You smile at the camera, hoping General Fairchild is watching this. "However, while I'm endorsing the suggestion of bringing it back...what were the executives at Bucephalus thinking when they canceled it? Why put a great mech and the technicians who worked on it out to pasture over superstitions that belong in the Terran dark ages? It's an insult." You shake your head sadly, "Bring it back, modernize it the way Bahamutcorp upgraded the Pumpkinseed into the Pumpkinseed II, and don't be an ass this time. Am I allowed to say that on the air, Gretchen?"

She snickers, "I think so, but if it gets bleeped don't blame me." She flicks through the holographic list displayed above her PC, "Speaking of the Pumpkinseed II, here's one from the military forums. Technically his company paid for it.

As for whether or not the Kestrels are a monarchy or some kind of demi-anarchy, that depends on whether you would view a tribe of barbarians ruled by a chief who is the strongest warrior as a primitive form of dictatorship or a sophisticated form of anarchy.

No, we fought the Green Skulls. We allied ourselves with Oda, Red Siren, Flint, and that Harlock copy.

The Green Skulls, by the way, are an excellent example of why honor among thieves is important. When you're a pirate, and you go after other pirates to thin the competition, then all the pirates are gonna gang up on you and wreck your shit. Just like what we did.

They allied themselves with us anon, big difference. And thining out rivals isn't a bad thing they lost because they didn't finish the job and left one angry son of a bitch alive

And thats not feasible in the long run. Roarke has mentioned starting his own side. He'll have to start considering long term ramifications as to how the side is run, laws, policies. Otherwise when we die, the whole area turns into a warzone. Which is not something he would want.

I disagree. What that means is that they'll just leave quietly or as fast as they can, shooting everything in sight.

We are not trying to be a gang now, we are now attempting to be a faction, proper. And in its current configuration, likely to become a militia made out of the various pirate fleets that come together for mutual protection.

When you say that there's a big difference, but don't explain what it is, all you do is get people to ask the obvious question and extend the conversation. Like now. What big difference?

>thining out rivals isn't a bad thing
No, fighting over territory isn't a bad thing. Undercutting the competition isn't a bad thing. Being too big for you boots isn't (always) a bad thing.
Killing to the last man all your enemies, one by one, is a very bad thing. That's how defensive alliances are born.

>>49123225
We didn't fight the other ones, we avoided them, which seems to be pretty normal among criminal enterprises who don't step on eachoter's territory.. Oda's really the odd one out.

Hum... why not making it a "Free territory" like Jupiter was? But we will be the owner of everything. This way, if some other power/mini-faction/colony wants to ally with they can expect an alliance without becoming "JUPITER TERRITORY PAY OUR TAXES HUURRR DUURRR" or something.

"Bahamutcorp, a Jovian megacorp, trying to gouge their customers? When has that ever happened?" You infuse as much sarcasm as you can into those words, "Honestly, it was a gouge when Bahamutcorp ignored the well-known existing fixes for the Bluegill to drive up demand for the first Pumpkinseed. The Pumpkinseed II is a significant step up from its predecessor, but you'd know all about that seeing as you were in the middle of reviewing it, wouldn't you say?"

"I would." She remarks, then adds smugly, "Even if I was interrupted."

"Nonsense, it was a very successful field test. It did more damage to my mech than anything but a Paladin of Avalon. I look at it like this, the Pumpkinseed was built to be a moderately more sturdy Bluegill for pirate-hunting. Was it successful in this role? Debatable, but the Pumpkinseed II was built to meet more onerous demands on a UJCIDF mainline mech, including conflict with Avalon. There's a world of difference between a Harpy and one of the Avalonian machines, and it takes a different kind of mech to fight a war."

"It's adorable." Gretchen comments, "I know that isn't a technical assessment, but I just think the shape of the head is darling."

"I...wouldn't really be a good judge of that, I was too busy with the plasma swords and lances." You remark, laughing awkwardly.

"Mono-eye mechs are pure sex, Roarke!" She insists.

"I'm not even going to comment on such an easy opportunity for an immature joke." You reply with dignity.

"Oh, come on. I made it easy for you." She fakes a sigh, "Alright, final assessment...did they pull it off?"

"Yes. Definitely yes. Like I said, it's quite a challenge, but the Pumpkinseed II is an excellent little machine, a much-needed modernization." You smile and lean against the back of the couch. It's nice to talk a little shop about mecha.

There's one thing that you're obligated to point out as a pilot, even if it might not be the wisest thing to point out as a pirate, "Although...the one thing that bothered me about that line is this. How are you supposed to catch a Harpy with one of them in a flat-out chase? You either have to rely on circumstance, resign yourself to driving them off without pursuit, or hope you can shoot them down from range."

Gretchen nods, "We've discussed this on the show once or twice before. I think the consensus among the Maximum Thrusters girls...and they're our REAL techheads...was the last option. However, I've heard through the grapevine that Bahamutcorp might be working on an add-on or supplemental vehicle to increase their speed."

"Really? That's fantastic, how soon can I steal some?" You grin, and the audience laughs.

Gretchen laughs too, shaking her head, "Can you believe this guy, folks? Incorrigible! By the way, I noticed mecha with beam saber and cloaking capabilities among your fleet...the technology for that wouldn't have come from the former military members you're marrying, would it?" She's friendly and cute, but Gretchen Colburn can throw a hard curveball when she wants to.

"No, of course not. The First Mate of the Green Skulls possessed a cloaking mech that I disassembled with the Kaiser, we reproduced the technology from that. It's unfortunate, but we lack the resources for a stealth mech on par with what the UJCIDF could field with enough funding. As for the beam sabers, my Second Mate found a prototype at a SOUL facility on Suleiman 1 and our technicians were able to reproduce it and make copies. Honest theft, not betrayal." You answer without hesitation, "I did steal parts from SOUL B's S-Slayer, but still...honest theft."

"Of course. They're nice girls. Speaking of them, what do they think of your stance on the war between the Solar System League and Avalon? What IS your stance, succinctly? Are you on the side of the SSL?"

She smiles, "That's pretty macho, I kinda like it. So...just a few more questions to go." She clears her throat, "''Do you ever feel like you just aren't taking your life in the right direction? That you're wasting your talents on petty crimes instead of doing something meaningful to improve the state of the galaxy? Why don't you find the courage to understand others and realize that you should live for more than yourself? If you just joined hands with the other residents of the Solar System, don't you think you would be happier?'" She makes a face, "How did that get in there? You can answer if you want, but the next one is more interesting. 'They say that flat chests are justice, and cowtits are freedom, which do you prefer?' Cowtits!? That...that's really not how I would describe the sort of chest a...a healthy girl should have."

The Great Sidereal War (I had to go look the name up) is odd because it's sort of two wars. First, the Green Men curbstomping the Confederation, which was extrasolar and actually treated the solar system like shit too IIRC. The next part of the war was the solar system planets inventing mecha and taking over the fight, eventually beating the Greenies and forming the SSL. So yes, the Jovian and Martian governments who finally beat the Greenies are still around.

"For the first question...or series of questions, rather." You turn and look slowly at the camera, shaking your head, "I know who you are, and I want you to know that I am laughing at you as I fight for mankind's right to live free." You grin cheekily, "As for the REAL question, a man should never have to choose between freedom and justice. Both are essential to a balanced life." You nod sagaciously.

Gretchen chuckles, "You really could not take a side on that without having some girl murder you, could you?"

"I'd never sleep safely again." You remark earnestly. "Also, there's the matter of the butt, which is extremely important..."

It sounds simple, doesn't it, but it's the most important thing. Stay alert, stay in the fight, and have a reason to get back to your bay when you're done."

Gretchen whistles, "The words of a true pro who's spat in the grim reaper's eye. Better listen, kids."

The rest of the interview is just pleasant chatting, you talking a little about the differences between piloting the Kaiser versus piloting a Harpy Custom, and Gretchen commenting intelligently on the differences between Jovian and Lunar design. Eventually, time is up, and she shakes your hand with a warm smile, leaning close to whisper, "Use the back door so your fangirls don't ambush you on your way out. The only way I could have had more fun today was if I conducted the interview sitting in your lap. Thanks for doing this for me." She smiles at you, before glancing self-consciously at the cameras, "We'll be right back after these messages, interviewing some of Admiral Starwind's subordinates about the events on Mars."

It's the dice gods. See, it started with twenty named NPCs. The cast has grown since then, but that's what it started at. I then rolled 1d20 to determine how many were loyal to the death, and another to determine how many wanted to fuck him over for various reasons. The rest were just in it for their own interests and could be swayed either way. I won't spoil the results in case he reads this (which I doubt for various reasons), but one of the *very few* Loyal NPCs was the Imperiatrix, grand leader of the Zitran Hedgemony.

I have no idea how to justify it in game, and no idea how to eventually reveal it, but I'm working on it. They're a martial society of space orcs, and she's a ruffian who grew up in a ghetto, joined the military, and ended up smashing her way through the ranks until they elected her supreme badass. He's a soft little dude who is the prince of a empire known for diplomacy and being friends with everyone.

I'm trying not to be stereotypical and have her want the Royal D.

You feel lighter walking home. More free. With all of the bullshit that gets pushed on you by people wanting you to move in one direction or another for the sake of their politics, it's refreshing to get the record straight, state your position plainly, and let THEM squirm around adapting to it. You're wondering what to do with the rest of your day when you get a message on your PC.

Karen: 'Come see. The blueprints are done, and I found the wrench with the yellow handle that you like. I'm waiting. <3'

Before you know it, you're back on the Rhinehawk, once again feeling as small as an action figure in the tremendous new bay. Some thngs, though, never change.

The whir of her autowrench is a sound as familiar to you as the nightsong of insects is to planet-dwellers. The faint smell of machine oil and hot metal, the gleam of light off the edge of her glasses as she turns to give you a shy, sidelong smile, all of it is like coming home after a long day at work. Fame is great, but this is piracy at its core, a homemade mech and trust in your mechanic.

"I'm not much good at wedding presents." She says, hesitantly, climbing down from the disassembled Kaiser arm servo whose elbow she's industriously restructuring. She smiles, her wrench dangling loosely from one hand as she makes her way over to you, carefully picking her way through the minefield of metallic bits and nanotube gubbins towards you. She slips one oil-stained hand into the front pocket of her coveralls, pulls out her PC, and brings up a three-dimensional and incredibly detailed blueprint of a mech...

He was the biggest bro in the game. Was a nice guy, cursed with crazy eyes of petrification, then got eaten and turned into a freak, then had his body explode later on while still being a pretty nice guy.

And the sequel will have mechs that look like him.

Let's see.. more accurate, stronger fists that can do 10 k a punch, a large active shield, thicker armor, speed is still good, a weight category lower than what it was before, and nicer sensors to command a fleet with.

Could go with Knuckle Kaiser Schwartzeisen, which means black iron.

"I know it's...it's not fancy, but it's a direct improvement in everything you're good at. I stole the arm structure from the S-Slayer drones and altered it for increased efficiency. See, the shape of the folding elbow effectively lengthens the arm, and by replacing the twin thruster configuation on the elbows with a triple-thruster panpipe, we've increased the maximum effectiveness of your punches by at least 15% at minimum...and that's discounting some of the more advanced technology I've squeezed in there. Smarter and more HMIS-responsive targeting locks for the arms, in particular, but...see how the left shield mount is thicker, here? It's automated, now, with a crude AI that can detect incoming attacks and automatically interject the shield. This isn't just a patchwork upgrade job, either. No, we're taking the Kaiser apart, you and me, and we're rebuilding it fresh. As our own mech, something created between you and me." She slips her hand into yours, leaning against your chest and disrupting the holographic field, smiling up at you as her fingers interlace with yours and she plants a kiss on your lips. Her fingers are oily, but you don't mind.

She pulls away, and hands you your wrench, the big one with the yellow handle, "While we work, there's another project I've been spending some time on. Just a little...dream I've had."

Well, one idea I had for when we get bit weaponry is to name it the Knuckle Kaiser Full Regalia. That includes the knuckle throne.. which I called the Knuckle Kestrel on paper. Fun fact, a light heavy mechfighter with just armor and thrusters can go crazy fast. Like close to 60 MA a turn fast.

"Karen, this is fantastic. Can we really afford to build this?"

She glances askance at you, puffing up her cheeks, "Of course we can, we still have tons of money and...I admit it, Red is making herself useful and helping to get us the parts I needed. Emphasis on needed, I've assembled them already. We have all the pieces, so now we get to go straight to the fun part and put them together!" She grins, flipping her wrench into the air and catching it, "Now shut up and listen to what I've been doing. You remember the Anseis' drills?"

"It's a little hard to forget them or the tantrum she threw when Clemmy stole them." You remark casually, using a set of industrial clampers set on a wheeled chassis resembling a small tank to start removing the armor plates from the Kaiser's legs. The new model has huge plates covering the front part, like part of the shields themselves, but the old armor needs to be stripped off for them to be mounted.

"I asked Clemmy to do it. It was for you, after all. Clemmy gets to make her mech stronger, I get to use the Flowerhorn as a test subject for the completed version of the system that's going to be installed on the Kaiser when it's done." She makes a face, "She could have just challenged Alice to a duel, but instead she went running to you. I have no sympathy for her or her stupid attitude. I still don't want her to get killed, though, she's just...a bit silly and old-fashioned."

"I'll do my best. So, I'll be the second one to have drills installed on the Kaiser? You know, those aren't really my kind of weapons...I mean, a drill could sort of be an individual finger, but I fight with my entire fist." You remark.

She nods vigorously, "Yes, yes! That's why yours is more complicated, building mobile hand drones that are capable of grabbing things is harder than just slapping a beam saber on there and calling it a day."

"You're thinking about grappling already? We've only been working for a few minutes, normally you have a lot more to educate me about before we sneak into the cockpit and lock the door." You tug one of her pigtails in passing.

She yelps indignantly, "Hey! Oily hands!"

You hold them up, "I'm keeping mine clean, you're the messy one."

She sticks her tongue out, "You don't complain about me getting messy at night, Roarke Starwind."

"No, I don't." You agree, and pat her backside instead, "There, no machine oil in your hair."

"You just pulled a slipped gear out barehanded, your hands aren't clean at all!" She twists around, craning her neck to see, "You left a HANDPRINT!"

You shrug innocently, "Sometimes these things happen."

"And sometimes I get distracted when I'm trying to enlighten you on mechanical knowledge perhaps half a dozen people in this system are aware of. Right, where was I? Oh, yes. The big problem."

"What problem? Can't you just copy it?" You inquire quizzically.

"No! That's the problem! I've dissected the Anseis' head. It's...incomprehensible. I mean, it's clearly some kind of mech, but the control system is...is only vaguely comprehensible because it stems from the same root as the modern HMIS. Not only that, but whatever powered that thing, it wasn't fusion. It had a power cell for that sword, but that was a separate system. No wires, no cables...but an awful lot of decaying organic matter." She wrinkles her nose.

"Organic matter? Like some kind of conductant jelly?" You frown, trying to imagine it.

"More like rotted...white...gunk that smelled like a salad gone bad." She shakes her head vigorously, "I had to wear a gas mask when I was working with it."

"...But it can be replicated, right?" You press her.

She shrugs, "Anything can, but it's going to be harder than I initially thought. The thing is, though, I KNOW it's possible."

>>49126461

>>
>>49126536
Likely not greenmen themselves, but likely using the tech she could salvage. Seems like it's using bioenergy generators compared to the standard stuff.
>>
>>49126559

Nah, if they were eva's they would be almost purely organic with a nice shiny metal shell on the outside.

From what this sounds like this is a basic mech, just with greenman bullshit in the works giving it some extra oomph.
>>
"You're getting incoherent, slow down and explain it calmly." You smile at her, wrenching off the armor piece.

"Mmm, let me attach the new plates. They're thicker and more sturdy, but thanks to the new verniers and efficient armor positioning it will be lighter in the end." She sighs, taking a minute to work to clear her thoughts. "Grandpa talks a lot about some of the old Wartime superweapon projects. Even after NaNa-01 failed, there was still call for something that could be as viscerally imposing and powerful as a Green Man bio-armor. Which led to the development of the Mobile Army Weapon, Megabass. It was a pretty fringe idea, I'm sure the UJCIDF never actually built the Megabass, but Grandpa says all of the actual design work was finished, which means it's possible for a mech with a standard power source and control scheme to achieve the Anseis' results."

"Time out. Mobile Army?" You inquire.

She nods, "The idea was to create one machine, which in the hands of a particularly capable individual with high HMIS sensitivity, could do the work of an entire army. The original called for using a pair of heavily modified battleships as carriers for the large and powerful main body along with a horde of attendant mecha. I speak loosely when I say mecha, they would be simple things like...like glorified missile platforms or something if Grandpa was telling the truth."

"And this is real this time? NOT another urban legend or something you read on the holonet?" You ask.

"Yuh-huh." Her head bobs up and down, "I trust Grandpa."

You sigh and examine your battered mech. "I trust him too, but two whole starships existing to ferry around one mech...that sounds like a myth."

"It's classified as an anti-planet weapon!" She replies cheerfully.

"That's why it carries nuclear missiles!" She adds, as if it needed clarifying.

"Nuclear missiles aren't fists." You keep your gravitas through sheer stubbornness in the face of what you're sure are bald-faced lies. If they aren't, though...you find yourself speculating on what could be done with it.

Karen shrugs, cracking open a can of Red Comet and taking a swig of the energy drink, "Mph, so don't kill any worlds. Anyway, this proves that it can be done, even if we don't go that extreme. Grandpa, fortunately, let slip that he remembers at least one belt facility that was working on it. Once the Kaiser is ready, you can go there and see if there's anything left to find. I hope so, I just need that one little breakthrough. I've got the drones designed already, barring really ridiculous space or power requirements they should be usable right away."

"Got it." You frown as you realize what's been bothering you, "I know it's not likely...but did you check for spores after dissecting part of the Anseis?"

She rolls her eyes, "I had a gas mask on, but yes, I did think that there might be Green Man stuff involved and made very sure there weren't any spores that our machines could detect? Now, why don't you grab that hydrojet and see if you can scour some of this glassified sand out of the cracks that reactor explosion put on the Kaiser's cuirass?"
