It's a mimic that tricks you into thinking it's the perfect wife.

You date her, fall in love, get married... And then she divorces you, a devious trick she planned from Day 1, stealing half your past, present and future income to shove into her widening gullet with a chortle before waddling off to commit the same trick on someone else.

Clever mimic.

Mimic sword

Looks like a real sword, can secrete different oils to make itself seem better and stronger than other swords.

When picked up the hilt unhinges and bites the hand. And won't let go. Like a bear trap.
>And as the fighter screams, the blade segments into 6 long metallic legs, and drags the fighter into a dark crevasse, with what appears to be 10 tiny daggers nested on the remains of a paladins tabard.

If the rogue tries to open the lock it will, but locks itself immediately after, and tries to eat the tools.

This is actually really good. Not actually dangerous, so long as you don't try to remove it, yet it does affect the player by eating up a valuable magic ring slot.

Also works as a nice in game way of warning your players that dangerous, hard to detect traps like mimics or curses will be a part of your game, without permanently gimping the unlucky character.

House hunters are large relatives of mimics. They have lost some of the latter’s camouflage versatility, but they have gained the ability to live above ground.
House hunters form hard shells that look like stone, wood, or thatch, lending the appearance of a building. Young house hunters look like smaller structures such as outhouses and sheds, adults are the size of cottages and small houses, while ancient creatures are larger still, with elaborate shells that can resemble inns, temples, or ruined towers. All three sizes of this monster can produce dim, flickering light (bioluminescence), resembling candle or lantern light, at any body opening, and they can imitate domestic noises (muffled voices, clucking hens, the tolling of a temple bell, etc.)

The warrior who was never disarmed. The mimic takes the form of a mechanical facscimile and then disguises itself as a warforged, using its adhesive to prevent enemies from ever relieving it of its weapons. Should they succeed on it (and it encourages tales of its prowess as a fencer) it simply latches on and grapples foes with the same adhesive and natural weapons of its kind.

Secretly, unbeknown to the warrior mimic, it has a secret admirer in the form of the armor mimic it is wearing which is very embarassed about the whole situation and unsure how to broach the subject, but has been content to snack on the bloodsplatter.

Sometimes my friends want to do little roleplay things but without fooling with stats. Extremely short simple games where roleplay and being creative are the main goals. Roll a d20 for everything, high is good and low is bad kind of simple. Anyway playing such a game with a friend my character woke up in a dark room with no memories. He found a mimic egg (I was hoping it would hatch regardless if it turn out good or bad) and just kept on going. After a ton of stupid (in the good funny way) bullshit my character end up eating parts of goblins hoping that my friend will treat it as a healing item. Turn out my character was able to absorb them and even get a name change each time I did it. I went all out absorbing everything I could at that point and the game went full on stupid fun. It was getting late so we kinda just stop. It was only later I asked the guy was my character a mimic as that would actually make sense with all of the stupid, hell at one point I just quit bleeding from a deadly wound just because my friend didn't want my character to die just yet. It turn out he wasn't, all of that was just part of the stupid. It would had made an interesting story though in my mind if he was a mimic thinking he was an adventurer and by proxy have a ton of neat powers.

But that's the thing - because it's a mimic by its nature, during its first stages the idea is innocuous enough that you probably won't give it too much attention. It's just... there. Eventually you start to think of it more and more and by the time it starts to reveal its true nature, you're already having hard time NOT thinking about it. The only method to even identify it as a mimic at early stages are:

>1) Meet someone else who things of the same thing and connect the dots
>But how would you know if you're not just on the same wavelength? Would you risk sharing the details, knowing that if you ARE infected, you're effectively passing it on?

>2) Know that a certain idea or concept is a mimic in advance
>Which means the it's already too late; if you're aware of the idea - you've already become its host.

That was my idea originally. If one knows he is infected, you can destroy the being by either substantially dumbing yourself down (in D&D, for example, repeatedly subjecting yourself to Feeblemind or just by forgoing all mental efforts and drinking your brain into an intellectual suicide), which would starve the "creature" eventually; or by simulating brain death/actually dying (if resurrection is allowed) i.e. effectively going to 0 Int and Wis. This would kill it immediately...and maybe yourself as well.

Ideally, you want to drop the mimic on the paranoid player of the party. Get them riled up so they're always considering the possibility of mimics lurking nearby. And then don't. Either wait for them to develop a false sense of security, or the rest of the party to set 'Cry Wolf' on the paranoid player, and then let it loose once more.

A mimic that took a rope shape, and is hanging from side to side of a chasm. (he waits for adventurers to try to use the 'rope' to cross, and he plunges them down to their doom/weaken them a lot)
A hint for the party to recognize the mimic, is that the rope isn't properly tied to the ends, but looks like more like they are wrapped around a pole/tree/whatever, and despite this the rope feels tight and safe.
Attempting to tie the rope, if done fast enough will immobilize the mimic, if not it'll revert to his true form, and defend himself, possibly attempting to run away due his ruse being found out.

2004 called, it wants its meme back.

On the serious note though, not everything needs to be statted. From my experience, the worst games of CoC are the ones where the investigators treat the monsters as something killable and tangible.

The main selling point of the memic should be exactly that - how difficult it is to identify and fight before it's too late. Weapons will not help you against it. Even sharing your predicament in too much detail to enlist help is dangerous. You must use your remaining wit to fight it, at a great risk to oneself.

To make it less of a death sentence, the incubation period for the memic to become apparent must be long enough - thus if you actually do figure it out early, you have time to fight it.

The tricky question is, how sentient must this thing be beyond longing for self-propagation? Because if it is sentient, it will fight back once discovered...

A Memitic infection goes through 6 stages, as described below.

>stage 1: contraction
The host's mind successfully accepted the memic; at this point, it is little more than an unusually pervasive ear-worm, a catchy song or interesting puzzle that fills their mind when they're not thinking, or is vaguely in the background. Very few memics are diagnosed at this stage

>stage 2: incubation
The memic begins to expand in the host's mind, slowly turning more and more of their consciousness to think about it. The host will find themselves tending to "slide" towards thinking about the memic in times of low mental exertion, and may become frequently distracted by it during repetitive tasks. Some memics are diagnosed at this stage, but not many.

>stage 3: subversion
The memic has taken over nearly 15% of the host's mental capacity by this point, and the host will quickly begin thinking about the memic unless heavily focusing on something else. It is at this stage that the host also begins spreading the memic, and also when most memics are diagnosed.

>stage 4: domination
The memic has taken over nearly 33% of the host's mental capacity, and has become sapient in its own right. If the host is aware of the memic, and has not managed to starve it before this stage, the memic will actively disrupt their thoughts. Sleep is filled with dreams and nightmares in which the host and memic fight for control of the mind, and it is an uncommon occurrence that hosts will defeat their memic in the subconcious.

>stage 5: consolidation
The memic controls 75% of the host's mental capacity, and sets itself to spreading itself as much as possible. What little remains of the host's ego is used to disuse the memic, as well as thinking about it. It is impossible for the host to combat the memic on their own at this point.

(cont)
>>
>>49043709

>stage 6: preservation
The memic controls 90%+ of the hosts mental capacity, and has reached a level of intelligence that allows it to become aware of its own mortality. In a desperate and futile bid to preserve its own existence, the memic shuts down all of the host's stimuli. By this point the host is utterly incapable of taking care of itself, and the memic sets all of the remaining mental capacity to thought.
In perspective to the memic and what little remains of the host's ego, a subjective eternity passes before the host's body finally dies. To the host's ego, it is an eternity of being almost nothing, without thought beyond that of the memic.

What would an origin point, patient zero, of such an entity be? Maybe an ingenious thought produced out of malice or in a moment of utter despair has a potential, if its creator had some residual power, to host a tiny spark of reason and evolve into memic. Or it has to be artificially engineered with evil intent.

Are you thinking the creature's real poophole disguised as mouth or real mouth disguised as poophole?
>>
>>49043817
I'm not sure, perhaps an entirely natural thought in a susceptible mind.
What does happen, however, is that once the memic has become sapient, it actively designs its "offspring" based on the knowledge gleaned by its host. These are often custom tailored intellectual problems, paradoxes, jokes, catchy songs or rhymes, or even a statement.
Not all minds are susceptible to all memics, and it will often be that the more intelligent memics (those between stage 4 and 5) will reproduce many variants and strains.

So I did something very evil as a DM once regarding mimics, or rather a parasitic variant similar to >>49032693.

See one of my players had this thing, where his character had an amulet he never took off. He always wore it around his neck, because it was given to him by his bellowed who died in a goblin attack years ago.

So they're adventuring, exploring a dungeon, and they come across a giant gargoyle, and it's made very clear to them that this looks like a mighty foe. Luckily, it's not hostile.
It stays there as a statue, but they can hear it talk to them, and explains that it was tasked with guarding a passage up ahead but it's not entirely fond of those it was tasked with, so it's willing to let them past if they give him something valuable. Something personal.
The PCs offer a few items, he keeps asking about the items and then denies them, saying they are not personal enough. He wants something they'll miss.
Eventually, one of the PCs mentions the amulet, and the gargoyle is very interested.
Naturally the character goes on a rant declaring he'll never take it off! Never! Its his only memento of his beloved!
Gargoyle grumbles and then tells them to come back the next day and bring something worth his time.

Party's kind of beat up, they decide they'll do just that, if for nothing else, so they can take the party head on.
During the night, I roll spot checks for the night guard as usual (I do this even when nothing's out there, so they don't know something's out there). They don't suspect anything.
Next day they return ready to fight, but the gargoyle explains he changed his mind, and will let them pass if they promise to return him something from deeper in.
PCs still think he's a pretty tough fight, so they accept.

>it took them many months in-game to realize that during that fateful night of healing up, a small mimic came to camp, carefully slipped off the amulet and replaced it with itself.
>The big gargoyle wasn't actually a gargoyle but the mom

>>
A gentleman who recently inherited an out-of-the-way property and all of its contents from his reclusive wizard uncle is looking for adventurers to help clean it out. The late mage was a hoarder in the extreme, collecting not only magical items and strange curiosities from around the globe, but also mundane junk such as broken wagon wheels and ten-foot poles, to the point where even the open spaces of his manor and tower have become labyrinthine hallways formed of junk. Adventurers will have to contend with, among other things, the wizard's malfunctioning magical servitors, voracious vermin who have taken to nesting in the debris, the semi-failed results of the wizard's attempt to breed miniaturized "fancy mimics", and possibly the wizard himself in undead form.

Mimic Pot

>The traveler finds an iron pot lying in the bushes. It's not rusty or damaged, so he takes it. That night, he catches a rabbit and tosses it into the pot with some veggies. Just as the stew starts looking ready to eat, the rim of the pot closes shut and the pot starts gurgling. After an hour, the rim opens back up, but the pot is empty. The furious traveler hurls the magic pot into the bushes and goes to bed hungry.

Haha, dumb 5 Int creatures. What harm could there be from such a dumb creature? Even if mimics were real, there would be nothing to fear from them. In fact, mimics, despite their stupidity, are very sedentary creatures and only attack if provoked. Whenever they do attack, they back off fast once the assailant is scared away. They also help you dispose of the old junk you keep in the attic in all those old boxes and wardrobes. Some of them even take useful new forms and help you spread fun new memes and pull some pranks. Mimics are your friends.

You guys do know the memic already exists as an Abyssal Intruder in nWoD Mage, right? Intruders: Invaders from the Abyss details it pretty specifically.

I do not know what is this "Superhot" you speak of, but it sounds like it is similar to our very interesting discussion on memics. Care to join us?

(nice trips btw)

A complete dickbag that goes off and dies in a fire with all my shit inside of him on a dog night.
>>
>>49053789
Huh, really? I just waited to see which chests breathed.
>>
>>49055860
You can also discern a mimic's true nature by looking at the chain.
>>
>>49056285
Or you could just hit every chest with your hardest attack

Do it in your off time?

Oh hey, it's The King in Yellow.

Animated object clothes are one thing, but mimic biosuits get a little too /d/
>>
>>49057254
College kids aren't adept enough at adulting to do life AND class. It's just not physically possibly for them yet.
>>
>>49057696
Is it a mimic if its actually just normal bio-suit that the actual humanoid mimic subconciously attributed a personality to to fend off PTSD and traumatic memories?
>>
>>49057790
If it can change appearance it's a mimic, if it can only be a specific set it's more like a cloaker.

And as much fun as humanoid mimic ideas are, I recall them being unable to take human form, even though it's their dream to become human. Upon attempting to be properly human instead of just a mannequin or the like, they realize how WRONG they are, how they can never be happy, and go mad.

Still, I had a mimic NPC in one game that used magic instead of her natural shifting to become human for a short time each day. She loved to hide and pop out to surprise people.
>>
>>49050587
The trick is the chain. Examine a chest you know to be a mimic, then a chest you know to be safe.

But no, no you are not.
>>
>>49057767
I wrote most of my fics while I was in school, it's not that hard anon

>mimic has learned reverse psychology
>>
>>49057880
I thought we were talking about kill la kill.
Ryuko's the humanoid mimic, her biosuit is just a biosuit with literally the same leanings as the white one right down to attacking the first living thing it sees and symbioting, and its personality is entirely made up by ryuko as no one else not even the mother of the life-threads sees it as anything beyond a neat biosuit.
>>
>>49058048
I never said it was hard. Just that most college kids view it as such.
>>
The mimics I've used so far in my campaign:

Classic mimic, Larger treasure chest with classic mimic inside, classic mimic inside two successively larger treasure chests, door-mimic, trash pile-mimic, tent-mimic, oasis-mimic, mummy-mimic (mummic), mummy-mimic inside sarcophagus-mimic, lyre bird-mimic ("everyone knows lyre birds are accomplished mimics..."), wrecked wagon-mimic, easily-pickpocketted mark-mimic, trapdoor-mimic, fingerbox-mimic (meme-ic)
>>
>>49058279
I'd say Ryuko is more of an Aberrant bloodline Bloodrager myself, but really only posted that image because art of most "living clothes" biosuits is not fit for blue boards.
>>
>>49037352
Steve, stop with the memes.

>art of most "living clothes" biosuits is not fit for blue boards
It would be if the NSFW rule was less retarded

Don't be silly. They only have 5 Int.

Helmet Mimic
Nests in treasure hoards and pretends to be magical, when put on teeth sink in and it eats the eyes. If you leave it on it gives you some blindsense, since it wants to stay alive too.

Lantern Mimic
Great for campaigns with well lit dungeons, it hangs out on the walls waiting for someone to come by. It then spits out a slick of burning oil and consumes the bodily fluids of the victims.

Potion/bottle Mimic
Bane of drunkards. When put against a mouth it shoots out it's own mouth and latches on to the throat of the drinker and attempts to choke out the poor guy.

Carpet Mimic
Digs a deep pit and bends over itself to lay over the pit (Normally long like a flatworm, but bend to look round or square). Unbends to let victims fall in the pit, some varieties like to use acid or spikes in addition to the fall.

Or better yet: The key to the chest is the mimic.

I read a story kind of like this, I think it was a greentext. Except their mage used mass animate object on all the gold he found.
>>
>>49059633
I'm running a dwarven wizard right now that's slowly creating a pile of gold coin constructs at a surprisingly reasonable cost.

I feel like this could be a Monty Python sketch.
>Save me Adventurer, this mimic has be trapped!
>No, you are the mimic
>No it's trapped me
>I can see where you're merged with it!
She gestures to the chest and it closes its lid
>Save me adventurer! The mimic is eating me!
>No it's not, I just saw you tell it to close itself!
>No you didn't
>Yes I did! Your hand is open and the knife is still stuck to it!
>No, no you didn't

5 int, that's totally bullshit, mimics are smart creatures, we can even use keyboards.
>>
Cute Mimic for the purpose of magical realming my vore fetish
>>
>>49036755
you don't happen to have more of that, do you? For... uhm... reasons?
>>
I kind of want to see the old style "Steve Irwin finds a D&D creature", but he keeps on opening old chests and they aren't a mimic, they're just an old chest. Maybe that part would be stretching the joke to far, I don't know.
>>
>>49058279
Ryuko is still human, she's just half mimic? I guess. Nui is a humanoid mimic if anything.
>>
>>49060624
Do mimics even have a butthole for him to jam his thumb in?

I thought I was safe from The Game.

I thought I couldn't lose anymore.

Fuck you, Anon. Fuck you for bringing this back.

Did her suit talk to that one guy who hates clothes?
>>
>>49044228

Shit, I used to know that guy.

I wonder if he feels shame everytime he sees that picture, knowing that he helped birth what was the most annoying part of... What was this? Sometime between 2011 and 2013, right?
>>
>>49048300

After the first one, every chest I came across, I threw my dagger at it first to see if it would react. If it did, then I would kill it with extreme prejudice.
>>
>>49061645
Eventually by sheer evolutionary pressure you'd be left only with those steely nerved motherfucker mimics with nothing left to lose. You've only made the race collectively more dangerous!

>>49056710
I had a player once who started getting really paranoid like that about mimics even though I'd never used them. Guy just read about them and was sure I'd do it to him eventually. So instead I told him there were a bunch of offensive splash potions in the chest he just hit as hard as he could. Oh did we have a laugh after burying his character sheet in the back yard.

The ring bites you. Roll for damage
>hands player a sphere with 1 written on it a few times
>>
>>49032561
Fun as a mimic.
>>
>>49032693
Couldn't you just stun or paralyze it with spells and then snip it off? Also you never know what will set it off. If you're hit with a spell that otherwise transfers damage to it, it could just freak out and snip your finger off, so really it is a bigger liability than just taking up a magic ring slot.

Please do; it would make for excellent /tg/ storytime
