(A recap of last night's interrupted thread and its continuation)
>Your name is Amon Shuu, a humble monk of the Water Temple.
>You have no family to speak of. Whether you had any to begin with is a question you don't have an answer to. You were just one of the many casualties of the 2nd Shinobi World War, an orphan. Your luck pulled through when a wandering monk snatched you from the debris of a border skirmish between Konohagakure and Kirigakure, your village having been reduced to rubble in the midst of battle. You were 4 years old. The monk, Myatsuu, brought you back to the Water Temple in the marshy coastlines of the Land of Water. This is where your story begins.

>Last thread you met a man named Sakumo Hatake, had a bout with the stern monk Tai, and had a go at trying out one of the sealing techniques you’ve recently studied.

----------
“Do you have any idea how dangerous that was, Amon? Seals are not toys to play with. You, our archivist, of all people should know this. The techniques I have allowed you to study are powerful, maybe even more than you understand.”

The disapproving face of Myatsuu, your teacher and friend, stares you down. Following your spar, Tai had gone and reported to the Head Priest of the Temple…unfortunately for you, also Myatsuu.

Tai nods his head in the corner of the priest’s meditation chamber, attempting to discreetly rub his (undoubtedly still somewhat numb) stomach when he thinks neither of you are looking in his direction.

“I know, Master Myatsuu, I let my curiosity get the better of me. I just wanted to see a technique for myself for once instead of reading about it in some dusty tome.” You finally concede. Tai lets out a loud humph at this.

“You spoil him too much, Myatsuu,” he chides, “a monk’s life is not discovery and adventure, but control and self-mastery. He is too young to be handling….magics...beyond his ability.” Tai leers at you as he finishes the last bit.

“Tai, I recall correctly, you were a brash young man yourself when you were that age,” Myatsuu warmly smiles at the stern monk, “I even may remember a event involving a certain traveling musician? What was her name again…”

Tai coughs loudly. “That….won’t be necessary, sir.”

“Must I always be the one to remind you to call me Myatsuu, Tai?” the jovial monk smirks in his direction, “I think I’m more than capable of handling any discipline from here. You may leave.”

“But….” Tai begins to protest, hesitates, then nods slightly and walks out from the arched doors of the room. You can tell he expected to have a say in the matter of your sentence…

Myatsuu leans in closer to you until you are nearly eye-to-eye with his white beard.

“Now, I suppose you’ll need a punishment for your action,”
His eyes twinkle slightly before his rigid expression breaks into a grin,
“Namely not having me around to see the look on Tai’s face when it happened.”

“I’ll give you a say in what you’d consider a fair and just punishment, Amon.”

>Sentenced to a day in the Temple’s Gardens to “meditate” on what you’ve done
>You must have Tai as your permanent sparring partner from here on out
>You must spend the rest of your day in the archives, looking for some esoteric piece of information Myatsuu decides on
>You’re on guest duty for the forseeable future
>You must clean all of the temple’s relics and treasures
>You must teach the younger monks about sealing techniques
>You must sit and meditate with Myatsuu himself, so that you may benefit from the “wisdom” he imparts

You stop to think for a moment as you consider the possibilities. You could take this as an opportunity to escape to the archives…but you’ve probably scraped the knowledge out of almost every book there already. You could meditate in the Gardens to focus your chakras or even spend some time learning from Myatsuu. As long as you don’t have to spar with Tai more, you’ll take it as a win. How about…

“I’d think teaching my own knowledge of seals to my peers would be a just punishment, si- Myatsuu.” You quickly correct yourself.

He laughs cheerily at this as he moves back to his favorite meditation spot, a single mat atop a small raised dais of earth in the richly-vegetated room. “Ah yes, teaching your own secrets then? Passing on your own efforts and powers to others. Some might even say it would be relieving yourself of your pride in the matter. How very wise of you, Amon…so be it. You’ll find them in the courtyard at this time.” He finishes with a wink before closing his eyes and reforming his familiar, stony expression of deep meditation as you turn to leave the small enclosure of the temple.
------
“How do I make a summoning contract?”
“Can I seal people I don’t like into a book?”
“Was Myatsuu ever good at sealing?”
“Does that one guest know anything about this stuff? I think he’s from a hidden village”

You sigh wearily. A handful of monks slightly younger than you- a couple barely past single digit ages- are your students. Once they saw their teacher for the day was a teenager himself, they lost any sense of importance in the lesson and began to openly banter and ask questions. A dark-haired monk-in-training tries to blow a grass whistle.
He ended up making sputtering noises.

You stop to think about this. The best way to go about this would be to start with the attention-grabbing stories to get them to focus on you. After you can cover the basics. Who knows? This may even end up being entertaining for you.

“Who here has heard the story of the Legendary Five Gates, the great sealing monks?” You finally call out to the group, standing up as you do so. Most of the eyes in the small crowd turn to you, puzzled.

“These five formed the basis of most sealing techniques we know to this day, and were said to possess extraordinary powers as well.”

“The Five Gates would become heroes in their time, the period of the warring clans. They traveled spreading a message of balance and harmony and spread the belief of the ninshu. Unfortunately, the time was too violent for their ideas. Realizing this, by necessity these five noble monks would transform their writings and philosophies into techniques to pacify those holding sway over populations and control power itself, the chakras.

The monks vowed to combat the evils of this world and parted ways to bring that dream to reality.
Where these enlightened ones walked, it is said that evil was banished and peace blossomed. In ending the evils of their time, the monks took action for those who could not, the oppressed and wounded. In time they would develop their own techniques and hold sway over the very hearts of men.” You finish.

“Tell us more! I bet they could blow fireballs!” multiple voices call out from the eager, now wide-eyed kids.

“Fire? In a way, you’re right,” you chuckle, “It is said that among their powers was the ability to manipulate and bind the chakra in another’s body. Legends say that one of the sages stopped a bloodthirsty warlord this way; the man, fueled with hunger for the fires of war, was literally consumed by them when the sage transformed the man’s own chakra into scorching flames... within his own body, burning him alive.”

There is a chorus of oooh’s and ahhh’s from the peanut gallery.

“Another sage was said to be a master of not only sealing arts, but physical as well. It is said he spent a lifetime developing a full-body seal along the lines of his own body's 8 gates. It was said he had more stamina, strength, and energy than any man alive…but at first glance would look like nothing greater than an old, crippled man. It is believed the seals he created and branded himself with would store, generate, and recycle his chakra utilizing the eight gates themselves. In the only recorded instance where he was seen using this technique, writings say people could see golden light for miles as if a second sun had risen.”

"All the sages could transform chakra into any element through use of seals and bindings. All of these sealing sages had achieved the titular 'gift of the sages' which we meditate and strive for every day as monks, a chakra affinity beyond- and indeed, without- element. Their chakra and minds were pure of any worldly attachment."

Some of the kids may actually be drooling now.....the perfect time to sneak in the educational section.

"So, how did they do it? What is chakra"? How can a simple design, a pattern of ink- and occasionally paper-, have such a sway over a person's energy?

The answer is deceptively simple, especially when realized. The universe finds it's given structure and meaning in numbers and symbols, these carry inherit meaning and powers...for example,"

You point to the sky above,

"the four cardinal directions determine position and place in this land. The five elements compose all matter in this universe. To create life, there needs to exist two of a kind or -in the case of the unique, or the abomination- there will be only one. Does chakra follow these rules of structure?"

The young monks look at each other, some nod and others vigorously shake their heads.

You smile and you point to a boy in the front row, nodding his head enthusiastically.
"You're right. Chakra is itself produced in certain forms and patterns within the body. You can see an example of this when you look at the pattern of your hair growth. It grows in the direction your chakra naturally flows, cycles, and churns throughout the body. While chakra may flow like water within one's body, sealing designs and patterns- combined with chakra themselves and in particular formations- can redirect, shape, and even entirely control this natural flow."

Yes, the art of sealing is quite literally the art of understanding the world's purpose...how and why it functions the way it does. Why it is what it is. This is something you have spent many nights wondering, even before you'd become a monk.

Maybe this is why you found a home in these practices of seals, ink, and design. In books.

"Mister Shuu, I need to go to the bathroom," the youngest kid in the class of monks calls out.

Food for thought you guess, probably for later.

You notice then that it's been at least an hour or two since you started this lecture. Given the amount of information you'd given them...you probably have fulfilled that punishment.

"Class dismissed"

As they quickly scurry to and fro, you decide to...

>(Final Recap, thread is live from here out)

You decide to retreat to the familiar archives. While blowing the minds of younger kids may be a fun pastime, it wouldn't have happened without the hours of study you've already put into that dusty space of scrolls and lore.

You make the walk through the courtyard and into the depths of the temple itself, where the papers and ink of the scrolls in the archives are free from the ever-humid air of the Land of Water.

The shelves contain a wealth of knowledge, a veritable treasure it itself. In this place is stored the writing of generations, the oldest document you've found going back more than several centuries.

Scanning the bookshelves, your eyes rest upon the familiar sight of your desk. You sit down and shift the weigh comfortably before you get to work on the latest project:

>An paper of unknown age, falling apart at the seams. The designs imprinted on it don't resemble any seals you know of and there is no lettering either. It bears some resemblance to a map of the continents?
>A single, well maintained scroll. This was the previous archivist's project as well. It is an old scroll believed to contain a journal or account of one of the Five Gates, the legendary sages. It needs to be restored and the ink is almost entirely faded in spots
>A lengthy document containing the techniques mastered, as well as accompanying instructional diagrams, of the previous high priest of the water temple. An autobiography of sorts
>Basic Instructional texts in medical jutsu and ninjutsu from the closest villages, Konoha and Kiri. Recently printed.
>A brand new book you haven't seen before. This literally must have been just delivered.

You unravel the exceptionally large scroll, it’s width easily matching that of your torso. Your predecessor had believed this to be the personal journal of one of the 5 Gates, the sealing sages of legend. Coulmns of patchy, yet beautifully written calligraphy stand in formation before you. Patches of the text are almost entirely missing from the weathered ink, but you can see sections where it looks like the lettering and occasional seal are a deep black, with the smell of fresh ink and new life to them. The previous archivist had spent many years of his life restoring this by hand.

You pick up where you’d left of the night before. The section had begun describing an event sounding much like a natural disaster, a fire of sorts. You continue reading…

“…nothing but ash. Blue Flames licked the ground where the men and I had risen the barricades. No wall could stop the beast of fire, however. The clansmen closest fell to the engulfing flame before I perform the fire sealing method. The dem- “

the text cuts off here, it would seem the previous archivist left this section not renovated for some reason. You pick up at the closest point after.

“I sealed it within an clay urn provided to me by the head of the lightning clan. For as long as this prison remains intact, so should the seal. I must admit, I did not find this solution adequate. Too many lives were spent in containing this threat to allow such a temporary solution. I have asked the leader of the lightning ninja clan for a lodgings for an extended period of stay, for the purpose of keeping watch over the prison. In truth, I had a theory I wished to put to the test. A hum- “
again, the section cuts off and resumes a few paragraphs later.

“ -boy volunteered. I can only hope he understands the sacrifice he will be making. The path he chooses will be one of suffering and as such I have offered him companionship on my own journey. He refused, wishing to stay and protect his home following the sealing of the bea-“

once more, a gap in the text, notably larger than the previous ones. The section abrupt ends at this, oddly. The following part is an entirely different account yet deciphered.

“-for repentance. What has been done I should never had been created. I can only hope the journey south to the Lands of Fire will bring forgiveness for my sins. The lightning clan has bloodied the waters of their home and I have outstayed my welcome in their village, hidden in the clouds. The monster I have made will be my burden to bear and- in time- to end.”

Past the final column, you see the edges of a design. There are sketches of what appears to be an unfinished seal of sorts. It does not match the handwriting of the rest of the text....

You open the scroll fully enough to see these in their entirety and try to deconstruct what you're reading.

You pour over the pictures for several hours. You can say for sure that, while some of the writing here *could* be from the original author, you’d have to guess that the rest are the writings of the former archivist. It’s borderline illegible scribbling and doodled designs at points, but there are some extended diagrams that are almost entirely beyond you. The techniques used in-what looks to be- theoretic seals are entirely new to you and, quite frankly, are making your head hurt. However, in the first portion of the tirade of notes you see scribbled something actually immediately legible,

“Kumogakure? Need more info. Archives lacking in sealing techniques. Maybe a great sage.”
Traced underneath were various symbols in patterns you recognized as a Heavenly Seal. You quickly copy it down on a spare sheet of paper and put it inside your robe.

There are what look like more notes spread about, but it seems he’d taken to coding them from here on out. What was he hiding? You somewhat remember the old man who’d taken care of these tomes before you. You hadn’t seen him much, but you were told he’d traveled much towards the last years of his life. He died peacefully on your tenth birthday. Had he been looking for something?

As you finish your thoughts, you hear the chirping of crickets reverberate through the halls and into the large room.

It's night already?

You roll the scroll up and go to put it away when you hear a warm voice from the doorway.

"Another late night, Amon? It's not a wonder why you're late to morning exercises so often. You hardly sleep, it would seem."

Craning your head over your shoulder, you see the slighted hunched form of Myatsuu slowly ambling towards you with walking staff in hand.

"I may need to steal some more of your sleep even yet, Amon," he apologizes, "but there is something that I think will require your talent. Our newest guest requires a favor of you."

The guest?

completely an option, considering your abilities.

Depends, some monks will get or make (non-sealing) tattoos as a symbol of the permanence of their faith, discipline, or whatever values they hold true to. In their faith, these monks will try to eliminate the earthly self and ego to grow closer to these ideals.

Some believe in the full abstinence and removal from worldly desires and affairs. This belief is prevalent at the Water and Earth Temples, respectively ( also plays a factor in why you haven't heard much regarding the -very- active world war right now). In the end, the ninja monks believe in the ninshu, or connection between all living things through chakra.

There are obviously different interpretations of this, which allows for some differences in belief and doctrine.

“The Guest? What does Sakumo want with me?” You ask, confused.

“Sakumo?” The old man’s eyes go blank briefly before you see a visible spark of recognition in them.
“Ah, the ninja yes? He had left on his diplomatic mission to Kirigakure this morning. It was not long after you’d scurried off to temporarily paralyze another monk, actually.” He teases with a small smile.

Well…
He got you on that one. Myatsuu turns and you follow, walking up and out the corridor leading from the archive.
But if it’s not Sakumo…

“What is with all the guests recently, Myatsuu? Who is this one?”

Myatsuu dismisses the question with a wave, “he is a guest from the outside world. That is all that should matter. He is a merchant of sorts, since you must know.”

You drop the subject as you exit the small tunnel and into the evening-cloaked courtyard. Your minds drift to the text you read as you see the few torches strewn about the yard. It had mentioned a lightning clan, a beast, and fire of some sort. Had there been some accident?

“Myatsuu, I was reading a scroll the last archivist was working on…”

“Ah, you mean Hiragan? He was quite the cooky one, you know. That’s coming from me, too!” He laughs heartily and…a bit off-pitch, before coughing and continuing.
“Old Hiragan was always out and about, a very active man. He was one of the few monks I allowed to travel outside and collect items for the archives. He very much argued the case for the importance of knowledge in educating future generations and preserving any written treasures. I can say with confidence you have his same, curious mind.”
>>
“Actually, it was about the work itself.” You correct, “Have there every been stories or records from kumogakure about a lightning clan or any sort of beasts? What about human seals?”

Myatsuu stops briefly and turns to face you. His expression is pure stone and ambiguous.
“There are some things meant to be lost to time, Amon. Do not ask about the practice of human seals again.”
He pivots and continues walking and talking as you follow him to the entrance of the temple, the great doors.

“The Lightning clan is a name familiar to me, however. I believe they played a part in the formation of the Village hidden in the clouds. They would dominate the Land of Lightning under civil conflict erupted. I’ve heard rumors of a great feud between the clan and a powerful ninja of the time, maybe the two events are related,” he muses,” As for beasts, I’m drawing a blank.” he finishes hastily before reaching the exit to the monk's quarters, leading to the front gates.

"Our newest guest has just arrived and requested hospitality and shelter from the war which spreads through the lands outside," Myatsuu motions for you to lead through the door, but stop you as you are about to exit.

"He also requests protection, an escort, in his travels. This is not a right we hold to our guests. You are free to refuse if you so deem it necessary."

You nod and continue out the door to face the Gates which mark the boundary of the temple itself and the lone man who stands under its awning.

I don't mind the idea, sounds cute. If other anons aren't against it, I'll put it in.

I was reading my textbooks until about 8pm exactly...then, well, a quest happened. Go figure.

It was 11:42 on the east coast then. I sleep on a college timetable lol

“Depends what you mean about that, my name is Amon Shuu. I’ve been told you’re a…merchant?” You respond, eyeing him suspiciously. You still remember the time that merchant sold you that small toy ship when you were a kid.
It sank immediately. Along with your trust for the people.
Never trust a merchant.

Yoru gives a look of feigned insult, “I, a simple merchant? I wouldn’t know how to be a simple merchant if I tried. No, the name of Yoru Norihime stands for many things: an entrepreneur, an inventor, and the founder of the illustrious Norihime Corporation!” he finishes, in a full pose and winning smile.

“Norihime Corporation? Haven’t heard of them.”

“It’s a work in progress,” he says, scratching his head.

“What exactly are you asking me to do?” you say, crossing your arms. You’re not convinced by the gaudy man quite yet.

“Ah yes, of course, the meat of the problem.” He says, straightening out to his full height. He repositions his glasses and the goofy grin turns rather serious. “There is very bloody fighting to the north along the borders of Konohagakure. Our neighbors, Amegakure and Kirigakure, are in the midst of war- as are all other nations at the moment. Those traveling the roads are commonly known to be robbed or even killed. Many have died and, as you may guess, I have no intention of joining them. “
Yoru straightens his glasses before taking out a cigarette.
“I was lucky enough to have tagged along to a guarded caravan when coming down here to gather some materials, but I need to return to Konoha…and then make a journey to Kumogakure, if are interested. I have business in both places. You're highly recommended.” He finishes and clasps his hand behind his back, smile out in full force.

You look to Myatsuu, thinking if anyone would have objections…it would be him. He simply stares back, expectantly. A slight drizzle begins to pierce the night.

“What do you say, Mr. Shuu?”

“It is a monk’s duty to protect, after all. When do we start?”

A wide smile breaks out across Yoru’s face and he barks out a laugh. “Very good, Mr. Shuu, quite excellent! I don’t think I could have said it better myself.” He spins in place to face the path leading away from the temple and begins to wildly gesture towards landmarks in the distance. He’s rambling a bit a bit but it sounds like he’s openly outlining the route he thinks you should take while also throwing out counterpoints against his own ideas and arguing against them.

You try to give Myatsuu a look. He just stares straight ahead.

“So, are you ready to go? Let’s head out!” Yoru suddenly calls to you. He’s already making his way down the road, a full backpack slung over his shoulder.

“Wait, I can’t just… I still need…” You sputter briefly.

“In my opinion, Mr. Norihime,” Myatsuu’s voice calls out through the night, “a day’s preparations would serve both of you quite well. It is already quite past my bedtime as well, and I’m sure some of the other monks would like to say their goodbyes to our favorite archivist.”

Yoru stops mid-stride for a minute. “Preparations, of course…”
He swings around and continues his stride back through the temple gates. “Of course! I could probably make a map, detail the route, and water-proof my shoes…speaking of which, I probably…” his voice trails off as he heads towards the guest house towards the back of the temple, smoke from his cigarette weakly trailing behind him.

“Amon”

You turn to face a gentle-faced Myatsuu. “Is there anything you need for your journey? I’ll have it prepared by morning.”

“I’d like to take the scroll I was studying earlier, teacher.” You nod and pat his shoulder.

Myatsuu nods understandingly, “I’d figured you want it given the questions you’ve been asking. Take it with you, Amon, but remember my warning. Hold it close to your heart as I have.”

The old monk straightens out. “As for the rest of the supplies, I assume you’ll need a travel pack and the basics: food, water, sleeping mats and such. Sealing materials as well, no doubt. I’ll check our stores of ink and paper…we probably won’t need much with you not around to use it all,” he ends with a chuckle.

“I’d actually wanted to know if Tai could come with me.” You asked Myatsuu, who is raising his eyebrows in clear surprise. “I figure a specialist in the physical arts could only help someone like me. After all, with all the time we’ll be spending on the journey he may even finally teach me a thing or two.”

Myatsuu considers this briefly, then nods. “I’ll let him know first thing in the morning and pack an extra bag accordingly.”

And lastly….

“Myatsuu,” you state clearly. He looks up at your, curious.
“I would like to borrow one of the treasures of the Temple for this journey. If what the colorful merchant says is true, there may be dangers none of us have seen before.”

A world war…if this mission isn’t suicidal, it is more dangerous than anything you’ve faced before at least. Hopefully, Yoru knows what he is doing.

Myatsuu cocks his head for a moment, thinking again. Then he simply nods.
“I have something in mind.” He says simply.

With the night in full swing, you decide it is far time to retire to bed and let Myatsuu make the preparations. You have a long journey ahead of you.

You dream fitfully and in cycles. Images fly across your minds eye, coming in bright flashes.

A Brush.
A Beast of Many Tails.
A Crown.
A Heart, Pierced with Knives.
A Golden City, Reduced to Rubble.
A Child, Alone in a Ruined Village.

Then nothing, as you feel the warmth of morning sunshine on your skin. Waking up to the late morning's sunshine, you know you've missed morning exercises, but can't find it in yourself to care.

You're leaving the Temple. Looking next to your sleeping mat you find two full traveling packs, along with a single note.

"Meet me in the shrine"
-------

As you enter the shrine, you can hear the familiar pitter pat of rain upon the shingles of the temple roof. How many times have you heard that same noise, you wonder? When would be the next time you would be able to?

In the middle of the room sits Myatsuu, meditating peacefully. A large staff is laid across the ground in front of him. It has a thick red cord struck through a loop in one of its ends. The other end is slightly enlarged and asymmetrical with the rest of the pole. It is dull golden in color.

Without so much as opening an eye, Myatsuu grasps the staff in front of him and uses it to stand up. He then simply plants its disformed end into the floor and twists, detaching the end itself and revealing a very large paintbrush inside.

"The Wen Qu, a weapon believed to have belonged to one of the Five Gates."

"I...thank you, Myatsuu. I'll bring it back in one piece." you stammer, before bowing.

"Bring yourself back in one piece, Amon. You are a much greater treasure to this temple than a dead man's brush." Myatsuu hands over the treasured relic to you.

It feels surprisingly heavy, but comfortable in your hands. The rain continues to pour forth outside, as the spattering gets louder until it becomes a dull roar.

Is there anything you would like to do before leaving?

You offer a quick prayer for safety in the shrine.
A prayer for understand.
A prayer for a return home.

A few minutes pass and you move to exit the shrine and find Yoru. The rain is now thundering on the tiled roof.

The doors to the shrine slam open before you can get to them yourself, letting a man with white hair splattered with patches of red stumble into the room with a shining white dagger in hand. The puddles he's leaving along his path threaten to flood the room themselves and are marred with ever increasing drops of red from a young woman he is carrying over his shoulder.

The girl is bleeding very badly, there are cuts all over her body. Looking closer you can see the white-haired man has bloody holes in his arms and legs, while the protective vest he wears is tattered badly in places.

Sakumo Hatake drops the young girl, herself coughing blood, at your feet. He says two words before he collapses to his knees, unconscious.

"They're coming."

Because of the parallel with shinobi quest how susceptible is the story to being altered?

ninja monk takes place before shinobi quest, it shouldn't be a problem.

Regardless, I'm still keeping in touch with wargle every now and then to make sure.

Damn. Keeping ren alive (if that is ren) would be a big canon change.

Also: Really liking the "badass seal monk" build
