My apologies for the late start, a family member needed a ride to the local auto garage.

Welcome back, everyone, to the fifty-first installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest! I'm your host, Wong, and today you are Corporal Amos Wedge of the UJCIDF, the unofficial bodyguard/babysitter of the Jovian Planetary Chairman's youngest son, Garret Luxol.

It's so nice, sleeping in late. After gobbling down burgers the way you promised yourself you would if you got to Innsmouth in one piece, you more or less collapsed into a food coma on your cot in your assigned quarters on the ship.
>>
How much time has passed in universe from when we started?
>>

Fuckin sweet! Get off work have a beer and more mecha quest.
>>
>>48890947
seems like not that long. A night has passed unless this is the mother of all food comas.

I meant since we started the quest
>>

So are we gonna get that pumpkinseed kerieger anon made? Cause I like that juicy beam lance.

We really need to get our aces some new mechs or at least upgrade them some more
>>
>>48890993
I imagine we'll get the slightly more powerful gun first since thats what we voted for last time. She'll have to work up to the full thing unless she spent the night in a furious salt powered upgrading session.
>>48891076
Especially for Oda. His mech is cheep as fuck.

We'll give one to Gretchen as a wedding gift.

Unfortunately, the buzzing of your PC disturbs your pleasant dreams of cat-eared women, and you groggily sit up, running a hand through your hair and gazing at the device in momentary befuddlement before you answer.

"Where were you at breakfast?" Garret snaps in your ear.

"Nwah?" You articulately reply, rubbing your eyes and wandering into the bathroom to relieve yourself and clean up a little.

"There's an emergency briefing after what happened last night. Hurry up and get to the mech bay!" He hangs up on you. You yawn, smiling sleepily at yourself in the mirror as you brush your teeth, before what he just said dawns on you.

Barely two minutes later, you're racing down the hallway while doing up the last of the buttons on your uniform with one hand and trying to buckle on your sidearm with the other. You finally get the latter done, before tripping over an untied bootlace and nearly going headfirst into a wall. You manage, eventually, to sort your clothes out and make it into the bay, panting and out of breath. You're at the back of a knot of people roughly twenty-odd strong, all standing at attention. Several of them glare at you as if they've been standing there for a while.

The man standing at the podium, though, doesn't seem bothered at all. He looks directly at you, gives you an incredibly pleasant smile, and notes sympathetically, "Rough night, wasn't it?" From the dark blue arrows on his collar, you can tell he's the Captain of the Cicero, and you should know his name...but honestly, you glanced at the assignment briefing very shortly and left remembering things like that to Simon. He's tall, with dark, messy hair and a rose on his lapel.

"Good morning, everyone." He actually waves. "I hope you all slept well, because we have a busy day ahead of us. First things first, let's welcome Sergeant Luxol's SOUL squad. I, of course, am Captain Matthias Clearwater and this is my ship, the Cicero. This is our representative from Bahamutcorp attached to said squad, Irina Gaunt." He indicates the blonde woman from last night, now smartly dressed in a white labcoat and looking absolutely exhausted, "And this is our chief mechanic, Mari..." He glances around, frowns, then glances self-consciously at the blonde, "Irina, where is Marilyn?"

"Asleep, sir." She answers with a grunt, "She was working late last night."

Important question: the Lunars are space Catholics right? Could we get Jesus in trouble with the space pope for using Jesus as his call sign? I recall a mobile suit was cancelled simply because it was named the Arabian. Surely we can get Jesus canned for being Jesus.
>>
>>48891510
That was less because it was called the Arabian, and more because it was human shaped

So how does the sleeping situation work with Roarke? Does he have the master bedroom and all the girls have their own rooms in the same wing? Did we ever move into a bigger room? Do we have the most 80s bed of all the water bed?

"Ah, well, that can't be helped." He smiles and shrugs, "I hope she has a refreshing catnap."

Irina rubs her eyes, "Sir, please, can we get on with this?"

"Right! Yes! Straight to the point! Last night, we lost two squads. May Elysium welcome Pilots Macintosh, Bates, Banner, Corner, Tan, and Nguyen. Remember the fallen!" He snaps his fingers and points skyward, posing dramatically. You hear the ship's guns firing, and he holds the pose the entire time as the Cicero fires off twenty-one shots. He looks just a little bit pleased with himself, and Irina looks like she would rather be anywhere else in the galaxy, "...Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 20:00 Standard. Meanwhile...Irina, do the thing." He gestures nonchalantly at her.

She sighs and fiddles with her PC, "Yes, sir." She projects a large holoscreen, displaying an image of the craters left by your three mecha detonating, "You were all informed of the events of last night during breakfast today. However, we were able to retrieve some information from the debris and also the flight recorder from Sergeant Luxol's machine, which confirms the worst of our fears. A Paladin is near Innsmouth, and one that wasn't already accounted for on this planet. This brings the count up to two. We have extensive footage and reports of the Gerer, enough to be absolutely sure that it is a different machine. In addition, a squad of five Knights...at least one of ace level...managed to get this far past our front lines and set a remarkably precise ambush. This cannot be allowed."

Karen's room was more or less left entirely intact, and Roarke has a largish room nearby. The habitation rooms surrounding them are both naturally empty because of the usual noise, so Clemmy, Samantha, and Gretchen have all moved into one. Rosita has an entire palace on Auditorium to sleep in, and if she's spending the night on the Rhinehawk she'd sleep in Roarke's room. Fatima will claim a room for herself in the nearby vicinity, too, now that she's recovered.

"You're being too terse, you need to relax and let the words flow with public speaking." The Captain comments.

Irina bristles and bites back what are clearly some very hurtful words, "Thank you for the advice, Sir." She says through gritted teeth.

The pilot in front of you...an officer, actually, a Lieutenant judging from his white uniform despite his youth and the unmistakable crisp haircut and straight back of someone who still thinks he's in the Academy, thrusts his arm towards the sky.

Irina sighs, "What is it, Lieutenant Asphodel?"

"How can you be certain it was an ace?" He doesn't bother with a Ma'am, although she IS a civilian so it's not technically impolite, "Perhaps the pilots simply made some mistakes and took unlucky hits."

She gives him a look that could curdle milk, "Or perhaps I was able to analyze what was left behind and recognized the model of cannon that fired it. Ajax-33, it's a War-era cannon they used to mount on Garrons. Outdated, now, the only ones who really use them in the Solar System are some of the Belt pirates. I guess it shows how unusual it is to see a sniper in Avalonian culture, the targeting systems are utterly out of date but it's probably still better than what they've got."

"So you're saying the SOUL pilots lost to an antique rifle?" He snorts, "Some reinforcements."

"Men have lost from having a stiletto heel violently hammered into their testicles for a lot longer than mecha have been being shot up by Ajax-33s, let's see whether you're such a hotshot pilot that you've developed an immunity to it." Her eyes narrow in dislike, and she starts towards him only to be brought up short by the Captain's hand on her shoulder.

"Let's not damage SOUL's first impression of us any further. My apologies for Lieutenant Asphodel, our resident ace. The men we lost were comrades of his." Captain Clearwater smiles, "We're all friends here."

"As I was saying. We have two main problems, the squad of Knights and the Paladin-errant. Unfortunately, we have no idea where the Paladin is, given the speed some of them have displayed it could be anywhere by now. However, a local lizard farmer spotted the Knights passing through this morning, here." The holofield displays a map, zeroing in on a location, then marking a line from from there to the point where your squad contacted them, "If they continue this way, they're likely planning to camp at the Great Zinn Dam." She taps her thumb on her PC to display her next slide on the holofield, this one displaying an impressive wall of masonry holding back countless gallons of water, "Which is where you come in. We have questions, and since the Avalonians aren't doing the courtesy of coming here on their own free will, we're sending you out to get them. Captain?" She looks to Matthias, who smiles cheerfully.

"As you know, the demands of the war and the need for additional troops on Qu'lir's various fronts have reduced the effective number of pilots on this ship from forty-eight to twenty-four, and now we're down to eighteen...six squads. As much as I would like to drown them with overwhelming firepower, that simply isn't an option right now. Innsmouth's local garrison is still painfully green, and the best mecha they have are older Bluegills. If the Paladin showed up again, the slaughter would be unimaginable. As soldiers of the UJCIDF, our first priority is to defend the civilians who have placed their trust in us. That is an absolute. Therefore, we'll only be sending three squads out to round the Avalonians up. As for how we'll catch them...Irina, do the thing again."

"Sir, you could just say 'Show them the Mantas', it would be a lot easier..." She starts, but he interrupts.

"Ah, yes, Mantas! THAT's what they were called!" He gestures towards the bay, where three large, flat, mechanical things shaped in a blunt forward-pointing triangle sit.

They seem to mostly be wings and engines. You don't see any sign of a cockpit anywhere.

"These are a bit more convenient and reusable than enhanced thruster pods when you need extra speed." Irina explains, "Stand your mech on them and...with the adjustments I've made to the HMIS...you'll be able to ride on them at much greater speeds than those achievable through your mecha alone. If they really are going to the Great Jinn Dam, you should catch them there tomorrow morning if you leave around dinnertime tonight. The Mantas are equipped with built-in rocket launchers, but they're clumsy and I wouldn't advocate fighting while riding on one unless you absolutely have to, so going in on your own power upon visually confirming their presence is recommended. I've put a few smoke and flare rounds in each of the Mantas in case you need to signal or create a diversion. Don't worry, the Mantas are equipped with an autopilot and can come at your summons and will automatically seek a safe place to land and power down when they don't have a rider and haven't been called. Now, as for your machines...hopefully Marilyn didn't kill herself in the process, she worked even harder than I did getting these Pumpkinseeds prepped and the Sergeant's new Warmouth equipped to his specifications."

The Lieutenant raises his hand again.

>>
>>48892778
>implying that won't be Garma
>>
>>48892792
Pumpkinseed 2s man. They actually do really well, compared to all the money and shit the other guys got funnelled into their mechs. If it was a fair fight or even just a couple of extra guys we'd have been able to swing it, but they knew we were coming and they had a specific well planned ambush.
>>
>>48892856
Yeah and clementine, jesus and the first mate would have probably shit stomped the five of them at once ambush or no.
>>
Irina just looks at him, until Captain Clearwater nudges her arm.

"Yes, Lieutenant Asphodel?" She sighs heavily.

He points down the bay to where one of the lesser technicians is finishing up the blue paintjob on a Pumpkinseed II, "What is that? What is it holding?"

You glance at it, and...that is definitely a lot less slender than the standard UJCIDF beam rifle. It's holding a chunky, blocky gun with a spiral pattern of coolant tubes around the barrel.

"'That', Lieutenant, is double the energy output of a standard plasma rifle and fires in a three-shot burst. It's an exceptional piece of craftsmanship based on a scaled-down version of the plasma magnums I designed and submitted for a previous SOUL machine, the S-Fugu." Her sour expression is replaced by a proud, accomplished smile.

"So why is it on that one? That isn't my Pumpkinseed." His eyes narrow.

"No, it isn't, is it?" Her smile only grows.

He grits his teeth, "As the ranking officer and veteran pilot on board the Cicero I should have first priority to..."

"...To march on patrol with it slung over your shoulder as some sort of compensatory measure for what firepower nature has denied you? Can it, Asphodel. I designed it, I built it, it's my prototype and Bahamutcorp property and I decide who gets to use it. Corporal Wedge defeated a Knight solo according to the data from his Sergeant's ASP and was the first one to notice they were being ambushed. Additionally, Sergeant Luxol has praised him for their escape from the Paladin. He's giving me results, boyo, and on top of that the newbies are leading this mission."

The look Asphodel gives you is full of fury, "You think you deserve any of this, you little shit?"

>[What say?]
>>
>>48892896

Jesus' gun overpowers the Ajax-33 (which is, coincidentally, what Miles currently uses and is on the priority list for an upgrade) by miles. Literally, since it has more than twice the range.
>>
>>48892856
Yeah, I am also noticing a trend when it comes to the Jupiter Forces R&D program. They have been pushing for a lot of experimentals, trying to see what works, and throwing away ones they don't like. The bluegill was being thrown out for the pumpkinseed, and the pumpkinseed 2 has been thrown out because of Roarke.

Unless they start making MP Slayers and Slingers, they are going to be hurting like Zeon did with all its prototype and limited release suits.

>>
>>48892896
Sure. In their current suits. We don't have the funding. You seem to think that, since we didn't steam roll a well planned ambush, we suck. We don't. We survived. A well planned ambush, in military terms is thought out, mapped out, and rehearsed. Then we escaped literal certain death by paladin. We don't suck, we just have Garma as a bff. Should be our tag line.
>>
>>48892902

"More than you do." You remark.

"I didn't hear a Sir, Corporal." His eyes narrow and his fists clench dangerously.

"Take off the insignia, I'm gonna feed you your own boots." You look down at him from your greater height.

He blinks, then stares at you as if he can't believe what he's hearing.

"You heard me. I've picked corn with more brains than you, and better hair now that I think about it. Take off your insignia so I don't embarrass my sergeant by turning you into a pinkish smear on the floor while we're still in uniform." Normally, you're a friendly guy, everyone says so...but your face is gradually moving towards a frown that's all the scarier for the absolute sincerity in your words. You see his face blanch as he realizes the difference in your respective builds.

"Y...you'll be in the brig until..." He stammers.

"Until what? Until the Paladin comes back? What have you done over the last few days? Innsmouth hasn't seen a battle up until now, so don't feed me any crap. You're the senior pilot here, supposedly, so you should know that nobody has time to squabble over who gets what when that THING is still out there." You seize the collar of his uniform and bodily lift him up onto his toes, your voice turning into a growl, "We're losing MEN, men who were supposedly YOUR friends, while you bitch and moan, damn it!" You release him, practically tossing him to the ground with disgust and rubbing your palms on your pants as if trying to remove his greasy taint from them.

"Alright, that's enough!" The Captain's voice is still pleasant, but sharp, "Wedge, Asphodel, you've both made your point. Lieutenant, I need you here to look after the city's defenses. The SOUL trio have faced these enemies before, they're familiar with them, that's why I, not anyone else, made the decision to put them in command of the mission. If you don't like it, submit a complaint to my superiors."

>>
>>48893396
Well, bitching about not getting what you want to your commanding officer because the Marines get it first would probably have gotten him more flak usually. Hell, could you imagine Sammy's brother being here instead of Wedge? He'd suplex him.
>>
"Corporal, I'd appreciate it if none of our pilots were damaged due to infighting, are we clear? We've lost enough people. Besides I'm sure the Avalonians would feel slighted if we started doing their work for them, and that would just be rude, wouldn't it?" He smiles cheerfully. "If you want to let off some steam, there's always the simms, or you can both volunteer for additional patrol duties. Hoo-rah!" He fistpumps.

This time, it's Simon who raises his hand, "Um...excuse me..."

"Yes! Speak up, soldier, I'm always happy to listen!" Captain Clearwater gives him a glittering smile and an encouraging thumbs-up.

"Sir, why does Amos' new gun have something drawn on it?" He points.

"Drawn? No, it would have to be inscribed with a laser, it's metal, and I'm sure it's really just an optical illusi-goodness me, there's a pin-up on it." He extracts a tiny pair of folding binocs from a pocket to look at it, "...It's a pinup. Definitely a pinup."

Irina claps her hands over her mouth, swearing abruptly.

"The subject looks pretty familiar, too." The Captain remarks, obliviously.

"A-Art is a form of self-expression and self-love, I was just doodling with the laser on...on a spare metal sheet and..." She stammers.

The Captain nods solemnly, "And it turned out to be part of the rifle's chassis and Marilyn quite innocently welded it on there. I understand perfectly. Lovely bikini, very tasteful."

She looks like she wishes she could melt into the floor. You peer closely. Yep, that's definitely a woman stenciled onto your new gun, and it's definitely Irina herself.

You know for a fact that she was drunk when this happened.

"Looks like vodka's got some competition." You remark.

Her face reddens and she gives you a glare, "Corporal!"

"What?" You ask innocently, "It's a lot tastier than a burger, any chance I could get a poster-sized copy?"

"CORPORAL!" She yelps.

The Lieutenant is staring at you as if you're the hybrid offspring of a particularly unpleasant slug and a Jegalese stinkworm.

"But it really looks nice!" You protest.

"Well, I think it's safe to say this meeting is concluded. SOUL, Second, and Fifth squads report to the bay at 18:00 Standard. You're dismissed." Matthias is the first one out the door.

"I'll...I'm sorry, Corporal, you're being too nice, I'll cover it up with something, really this was a mistake." Irina calls out, making her way towards you.

"Sleeping with the Bahamutcorp rep for a better gun? You disgust me, newbie." The Lieutenant growls, trying to shouldercheck you on his way out the door and not managing to budge you an inch.

You move your foot subtly in front of his and twist your shoulder into the check, making him stumble. Considerately, you grab his shoulder to stop him from falling and haul him to his feet, muttering quietly, "If you don't want to be shitting your teeth out tomorrow, apologize to her. It's one thing to insult me, but don't insult the people who are working on our mecha and keeping us alive."

"Didn't you hear the Captain? Touch me again and I'll have you court-martialed." He twitches his shoulder out of your grasp and stomps past.

Mentally, you mark him. Your vengeance will come when it doesn't damage this base's operational capabilities.

"Amos, let it go, he's not worth it." Garret points out.

"No, but he's a liability. Honestly, I'd take the Butcher over someone like this, at least she'd have taken a whack at the Paladin."

"You didn't hear that she quit?" Garret asks, surprised.

"What? The Butcher? You're full of shit." You're shocked.

"Hey, Corporal. I'm...look, I'm sorry, it really was a mistake, and..." Irina runs a hand through her hair, "I didn't mean to cause so much trouble. I'll fix this."

"No. Keep it there. I really like it." You remark, giving her a sunny smile.

"You liar, who would want a failure's bad luck all over their weapon?" She looks away, but smiles a little.

"Me." You reply. "It's not bad to look at, and it makes him angry. What's his real problem, anyway?"

"Brian Ernst Asphodel III, son of the Asphodel banking clan, feels that he should be on the frontline covering himself in glory and doesn't realize that he's not the only one shelved." She remarks, then smiles, "So...uh...you really, really like it?"

Garret claps you on the back, "Want Simon and I to take a hike?"

The test pilots who Stern turned into a hero squad to counterbalance Fairchild and Fairchild's own attack dogs do, but the Cincinnatus alone had over a hundred mecha presumably piloted by SOUL members that were virtually standard. SOUL is new enough that it's a grey area, and the fact that the two main faces of it have very different views of what it should be doesn't help.

Colonel Stern would prefer SOUL be a designation just for the ace squads used to handle exceptional circumstances. A bit like how SWAT is to the police. His view is the original one. General Fairchild's view is that SOUL is an elite FORCE, much like the Titans. For example, if you asked her whether Triple-C was part of SOUL, she would answer yes, because he was a mechanic under her command and as far as she's concerned she IS SOUL. Although her view isn't what SOUL was originally supposed to be, she has more rank and more political favors than Stern does to make her views a reality. Hence the repeated insistence by everyone that Garret's squad is SOUL, but Amos noting earlier that they aren't really a SOUL squad.

At no point was Captain Clearwater led to believe he was getting SOUL ace mecha rather than the Chairman's son and two friends with a Warmouth and two Pumpkinseed IIs, by the way, nobody was lied to in that regard.

"Yeah, I'll catch up to you guys." You give him a nod, and he grins. Garret's always been a good friend to you. You'd hate to think about something happening to damage that.

Then you turn your attention fully to Irina, "Yeah, I do. My only complaint is that it's not as good as the real thing. After I get back from proving that you aren't a failure, what say you, me, and vodka spend some quality time together?"

She punches your shoulder, but her lips quirk into a smile and the blow is gentle, "You asshole. You should know how unlucky that is. Now I'm going to be up all night with vodka worrying about you. Be careful, okay? I'm not much good at making friends, and you're the only ally I've got. I'd have a hard time getting over it if I lost you so soon."

"Say, next time you're feeling artistic..." You feel your face heating up, and you run a hand through your hair, laughing to try and lighten the mood.

"Which is fairly often, I've enjoyed drawing since I was a little girl. Of course, it's not like I was encouraged in that hobby." She frowns slightly.

"I'll have to encourage you, then. Anyway, I'd be happy to, uh, you know. Model. For you. Let you draw me and stuff." KEEP IT COOL AMOS!

She smiles again, and covers her mouth with her hand, "You really...you really are an interesting man, Corporal Wedge. No. Amos. We should at least be on a first name basis, right?"

"Right, Irina." You can't help grinning a little.

"I'm afraid I'm not very interesting, though, I'm a remarkably petty and selfish woman, I'll get on your nerves eventually." She pats your arm with a smile, "I just hope it doesn't happen any time soon. Let's drink together when you get back, screw Asphodel and what he thinks. Oh, right, I had to make the armor on your new gun a lot thinner to reduce the weight, it ended up being lighter than your old one, actually. Still, this makes it fragile, so be gentle with it. Don't humiliate me, you big lug."

You nod, and she departs with a new spring in her step.

The next several hours are incredibly tedious. You have a lot of checks to do on your new Pumpkinseed II, adjusting the settings minutely to fit your preferences better.

As for your gun, if you could quantify it with numbers it would look something like this...

Amos Custom Battle Rifle: Range 500m, WA +1, 6K (1K of structure), BV 3, Infinite Ammo, 24.5 CP, 5 Spaces, 0.5 tons

You also have to be formally entered into the ship's computer system, have your ID updated with your new posting, get a checkup and ensure your medical and dental records were transferred correctly to the ship's doctor.

...At first, you thought it was just because her squad leader was arguing with you. A young woman with short, brown hair glares at you as she leaves with the rest of the pilots.

You brush it off.

Then you see her staring hatefully at you in the shiny reflection of a bulkhead as you scan a wall map of the ship for directions.

Then you notice her when your ID is being updated, glaring sidelong at you as she pretends to shuffle some files around.

Then you see her testing the heft of a laser scalpel in her fingers as you're getting your checkup, waiting outside, fingering the little cutting implement as she eyes you.

This is an inch over the line, so you go to confront her, "Hey, you, what's your probl-hey! Come back!"

It's no good, she just turns and walks away without saying a word, her nose in the air.

Maybe it's space madness? You decide that you might be a little more at ease if you went fishing and got some fresh air.

Except there's something wrong with that. Asphodel hadn't been near her in the bay. He had his own crew, and she wasn't part of it. Come to think of it, while she has a UJCIDF uniform, she seemed more like a bridge officer than a pilot, so why was she in the bay, and why is she following you, and why does she look so angry?

You've never done anything to her, have you? It's too early for you to have accidentally made any enemies. Maybe she's Asphodel's girlfriend? You snicker at the thought of them glaring romantically at each other as you go through your big box of fishing lures. You select a handful of your favorites, a spread of different shapes and colors, and put them on top of your tacklebox for quick use. You put on a bucket-shaped, wide-brimmed hat. You test the swish of your favorite catfishing rod, and select a smaller pole to catch some bait with.

Then, you wander down towards the river. You see your first catgirl, too. According to Simon, 70% of the planet's female population and around 40% of the male population has had their genes modified for ears and a tail, a relic of the days when genetic modification was the norm and catering to tastes like that wasn't unusual. The stigma against genemodding after the War, though, has made the practice somewhat taboo...which is quite possibly why the Qu'liri are finding anything in common with the Avalonians in the first place. Everyone wants to belong somewhere, you suppose. The girl is small, cute, and gets very excited when you buy some crawdads from her little bait stand, excitedly telling you where you can find the best spots along the river for fish.

You almost hesitate to take her advice. After all, she's a native, and not all of the natives are trustworthy right now. However...two things stop you.

First, she's a kid. You don't want to be the kind of person who suspects kids of treason without having at least some sort of evidence.

Secondly, you believe in the UJCIDF, and you believe that your side is doing what's best to keep Qu'lir free. So you thank her and do as she said, making your way along the river to a spot where it's slow, deep, and wide. You spot another cat-eared girl picking flowers along the hillside by the river. This one is older, holding a basket under her arm.

She seems a little startled to see you, and scampers away in the direction of town when you wave. This only dampens your spirits momentarily, as you get your poles set up and set to work fishing.

The craws pull in peacock bass larger than any you've seen in the Europan colonies. It's actually a problem, because they're too large to bait-fish with. The water here is weedy, normally you would overlook this as a fishing spot if it weren't for all of the success you're having.

You've just about resigned yourself to enjoying some good bass fishing (although they're technically cichlids, you're pretty sure) and not worrying about anything else, pulling in an arm-long peacock bass towards the bank, when a huge mouth suddenly opens up and grabs ahold of your catch, gobbling it down. The finny bulk of the titanic catfish thrashes just below the surface, about to sink into the darkness again, when a miracle occurs. The hook catches in its mouth.

no lie, this exact thing happened to my sister. Caught the biggest catfish of her life after it ate a crappie that she hooked.
>>
"GOT YOUUUUUUU!" You crow, jumping to your feet and hauling back just right to anchor the hook.

The catfish feels the tug and reacts with an immediate attempt to dive. Too bad for him. Your muscles strain as you haul back on the well-made Europan fishing rod, refusing to give in. This catfish knows all the tricks an old catfish learns to avoid being caught, but so do you, and you masterfully let it expend its energy swimming around trying to get free. As it tires, you start reeling it in.

"No escape, bastard!" You crow, as you pull it into the shallows. It thrashes and makes those weird, grunting noises catfish make sometimes, but you pull the sucker up onto the bank.

There are two groups of people who have mastered the art of taking pictures of themselves. The first is unfortunately overweight women, who have long excelled at hiding it through the artful angling of their picture-taking device. These are the best known, but an experienced fisherman can put them all to shame.

You set a timer on your PC and haul him up with your hands under his long, fancy-tipped fins, grinning and extending your arms (and the fish) towards the camera to make it look even bigger. The man-sized fish needs little help with that.

"Nyu?" A sleepy voice interrupts, but you're so caught in taking pictures of yourself and your catch that you don't even look over in the direction of the voice until you've gotten proof of your catch.
>>
The slippery animal writhes around, and you drop him onto the bank as you reach for your hip.

The girl...no, woman, this one is definitely a woman, sits up from the tall grass that was concealing her completely, rubbing sleep from her eyes. She looks up at the position of the sun, squints, and then wails, "Nyaaaaa! I missed breakfast AND lunch! I'm gonna starve, I really will!" She rubs the sleep out of her eyes, standing up.

She's dressed in simple green clothing that doesn't get in her way much, with a silvery piece cupping her breasts. Her skin is the warm brown of rich chocolate, while her messily-cut shoulder-length hair is silver. Her ears are in the normal place for ears, but long and fuzzy. The other two had ears further up their skulls, but you suppose there are different kinds of cat-eared woman on this planet.

Most importantly, she's wearing a gun, a big iron like yours. She looks you over with large, green eyes, and smiles in a way that bares sharp, white teeth to your gaze.

"You're from the ship, right? You woke me up with all your shouting." She sighs, "Here I was, trying to be sneaky, and you ruined it. How are you gonna make it up to me, soldier boy?"

You notice a few more things as she stretches and yawns. First, she is what you would describe as 'a brick house'. She has muscles, incredibly fit, defined muscles that are prominent without being bulky. Second, as she moves you see that her messy hair is longer in back and gathered into a braid that hangs past her hips. Thirdly, she's wearing a collar with a large bell on it that jingles when she moves.

You push the catfish back out into the river. You'll catch the big fellow again some other day, for now you're content to let him grow even fatter here in this pleasant little spot. The sunlight is warm and bright, and a cool breeze wanders over the hills like a lost child.

On impulse, you offer her one of the peacock bass you caught. You let most of them go already, as usual, but the six best ones you'd saved to put on ice and eat. Space food gets really, really old, especially military space food. Fresh fish is a special treat.

She looks down at it, "What's this, soldier boy? Is your name Fish or somethin'?" Her tail swishes behind her as she plucks it out of your hands and sniffs at it.

"You said you missed two meals, right? That's not healthy, you'll get ulcers if you don't eat right." You explain.

"...This isn't a meal." She looks hurt, "This is a snacklet. What, you think I'm a lightweight or something?" She grins cheekily. "I get it, you think you can bribe me cheap, and I won't capture you and drag you back to my boss. That's pretty bold, pretty bold indeed." She hefts the fish, considering.

Strength is only gained through adversity.

"Well, is it working?" You put another fish on top of the first. With her hands occupied, you feel a little more safe, shifting your shouder slightly and undoing the clasp of your holster to free your gun.

"Nyaaah, I'm not cheap when it comes to food." Her eyes gleam with amusement, "Really, my boss would be just so upset if I didn't bring you back, he'd yell at me and everything. You were way too reckless, coming here."

"Reckless is my middle name. Besides, should you be tipping me off about your boss who wants soldiers already?" You inquire.

She shrugs, seeming totally nonchalant, "What's the harm when you're 100% absolutely guaranteed positively going back with me no question." She wrinkles her nose, "Is it really your middle name?"

"Actually, Adventure is. My parents thought it was really funny." You admit. Amos Adventure Wedge, it's not a name that rolls easily off the tongue.

She stares at you, then bursts out into gales of laughter, "Adventure! Ha! That's...that's the silliest, corniest thing I've ever heard!" She puts the fish down, and steps close enough to stare into your eyes. Slowly, casually, she reaches down and does up the clasp of your holster again, giving the butt of the gun a little pat, "Put that thing away, I've handled much heavier." She winks. You're uncomfortably aware of how close she is, "Tell me, do you think you still have even a chance of getting away? Just because I was up late last night doesn't mean I don't have tons of energy now~" You hear a low, deep rumbling from her, much louder than the purring of a normal cat.

The goonch catfish's claim to fame is that it has dragged under, drowned, and eaten multiple people who decided to go for a dip in India's rivers. This is believed to be a result of the custom of depositing burned corpses from funeral pyres into the river for centuries, letting the catfish acquire a taste for human flesh. Naturally, Qu'lir has no such tradition and the river is considerably cleaner...but can you trust a river-pig with teeth like this?

You sigh heavily, time for desperate measures. It's much too pretty a day to get in a fight before a mission, "Alright. You may have all the fish, go ahead."

She licks her lips, "That's mighty sweet." She wraps an arm around her waist, "...But you don't get it. All I need is a few little words, and you'll come with me willingly. I know you're 'that' kind of soldier boy, teehee." Her eyes sparkle, "My boss is really interested in seeing your capabilities firsthand after what happened last night." She whispers in your ear, "I'm practically taking advantage of you doing this...but that's okay, right? You're okay with it. Yes you are." She pulls away, shooting you a coy glance over her shoulder as she saunters towards a patch of light woodlands, pulling out a knife and letting you watch her tail sway back and forth above her posterior as she cuts, skins, and whittles points onto a few sticks with the ease of long practice. "Still, I'm not a mean girl, I want us to be friends, so you just sit down and I'll make us lunch, okay?" She smiles.

Apparently, she's been here several times, she shows you a firepit she's dug away from the tall grasses and a little cache of tinder and kindling. Once you collect some more sticks for fuel, she ignites the campfire using the lowest setting on her plasma pistol and hunkers down next to you, preparing the fish and skewering them to cook, "Call me Lin-Lin, most people do. You're...Amos, right? The important boy's bodyguard? You're too manly to be the other one."

"I'm his friend, not his bodyguard." You protest.

"Friends can guard bodies." She insists as the tantalizing smell of meat cooking wafts through the air. She adds a few spices with casual aplomb.

Idle speculation since we're in dormant mode until the GM awakens, do you guys think a Kaworu exists in this universe?

I just think it would be funny if he turns out to be one of the Avalon paladins and tries to woo Simon with Avolonian tactics.

You know, instead of flowers or chocolates he conquers a small country in Simon's name.
>>
>>48901317
That'd be interesting to say the least. He was the best option for Shinji and I could see him gifting Biggs the EVA over a country. I mean, bio tech, Reflectors for an AT-Field, and that sweet sweet tang powered mental system seems like the sort of thing they'd try to develope.

Though, I am noticing that the armies of Space France are pretty basic. Knights are the bulk, they have some Paladins, but they are using old tech rather than making new stuff when it comes to stuff not in their standard kit. Must be great for getting the mechs off the assembly line, but not a lot of variance.
>>
>>48901317
That would be a weirdly knightly thing to do. Not bothering/not able to go up to Simon and ask him out, so he goes conquering to prove his love and worthiness instead.
>>
>>48901395
I dont know man, the knights are pretty beefy. I wouldn't say they are basic just because they are ground based. And their ships seem crazy.
>>
>>48901454
Basic doesn't mean bad. It's the same with any sort of tool. A knife or axe could be considered pretty basic to a swiss army knife, but a good design, proper balancing, and all that sort of stuff would make either be more effective than something more complicated. Hell, Roarke punched a over engineered machine using SOUL tech to death. Don't underestimate basic and simple things.
>>
>>48901494
I wouldn't call roarkes mech basic either just because it punches people. Specialized maybe.
>>
>>48901528
Eh, in a way it is at the moment. No special systems, bits, or secondary systems, and no real tricks compared to things like the Slayer. Instead we got fists and shields and a better sensor package. It'd be the same if we had swords instead of fists or even basic guns.

We don't use fancy missile swarms like the Slayer. We don't have multi-role weapons like the Puffer. We don't strike from extreme range and who knows what else like the Slinger, and we don't use special systems like the Betta or Archen to confuse or surprise our opponents. We just get up close and simply start hitting until things stop moving.

It's half the reason why Roarke is so scary. The Knuckle Kaiser is a old machine that doesn't even use laser weaponry, but it's turned up and improved so Roarke can make full use of it, allowing him to punch things way above his CP grade.
>>
>>48901885
To be fair, by this point our fists probably use experimental servos of some kind.
>>
>>48901885
>forgetting all the chainsaws and rockets and shit built into the arms
>has more advanced sensors than most mech
>faster than a lot of mechs
>huge ranged grapple
>super high tech custom armor
>have a special system to spook opponents
Naw man the KK is in no way basic.
>>
The sleeper has awakened.
>>
>>48901885

If you asked me, I would say that the Knuckle Kaiser is a very, very basic machine that has been refined over and over again, in the way that a really good sword is simply an exceptionally refined wedge, one of the oldest and most basic of simple machines.
>>
>>48902238
I'd argue its more like a late generation F15. Sure, its still an F-15, but is probably has about three original parts left, and spending 10 billion dollars to make another plane might not result in a better plane.

Before long, the food is ready.

"Eat, eat, it's good! Look, no poison see?" She bites the head off a fish with a crackle of snapping bones. "Mmm~ This is the best~" She sits down right next to you, close enough to foul any attempts to grab your gun.

The fish is indeed, delicious, crispy outside and soft and flaky within. She's an excellent cook, and from the smug little grin she displays as you react to the taste she knows it. She's kind and lets you have two, gobbling down the other four so quickly you're amazed she doesn't choke before she leans against you with a casual feline disregard for personal space, resting her head on your shoulder and purring loudly.

"Ah~ That was nice~" She looks up at you with a smile, "So, are you coming with me the easy way or the hard way? I had a lot of hard work to do last night, but I've still got plenty of energy!" She claps a hand to one of her biceps, flexing it in demonstration.

"Sorry, but I'm a soldier. I took an oath." You roll away from her, coming up on one knee with your gun drawn and pointed at her, "You're coming with me, instead. We have a lot of questions about what happened last night, and you're going to answer them."

"Eh? Me?" She points at herself, "But your mechs were the ones that got shot up..."

"It doesn't matter if we lost! A proud soldier of the UJCIDF would never surrender to an Avalonian spy no matter how good her cooking is!" You proclaim proudly.

She stares at you, then bursts into laughter, "So this is what really happens when a pilot gets shot down. You're acting all cool but you've already succumbed to paranoia and don't trust me." She sighs and shrugs, "It can't be helped. Alright, big guy, take me prisoner. Let's go back to the ship, it's on your conscience if they torture me~" She stands up and stretches, patting her tummy, "Thanks for the meal, Amos."

You take a circuitous route around most of Innsmouth, you don't want to give her a chance to escape. You see a few patrolling squads of Bluegills, which reassures you immensely. After the nightmare of last night, some normalcy is really soothing.

Of course, there's nothing normal about your prisoner, strolling along ahead of you with her tail swaying nonchalantly and her fingers interlaced behind her head casually. She's even whistling.

You try to keep a stern expression on your face, and while you put your gun back in the holster because she's cooperating you keep your hand on its handle.

"Heya, soldier boy, what's your type of woman, huh?" She asks as you walk through the gates of Innsmouth, the guards taking a cursory look at your ID and waving you through.

"The type that stays quiet when I have them at gunpoint." You grumble.

She giggles, "You could end up on the news with an attitude like that. Besides, your gun isn't drawn."

"I also like smart ones, which is why you're getting blindfolded when we reach the brig." You further clarify.

"Ooooh! Neat! It'd be a little hard to make myself useful, but any excuse not to work is good~" She stretches, giving you an incredibly smug smile over her shoulder, "Come on, be a little serious with me, you were so nice before."

"I like strong-willed women who work hard. Does that really count as a type?" You ask.

She grins, "Maybe, but what it really means is that you aren't shallow. I was expecting something about breasts or an attempt to hit on me."

You get a few odd looks on your way back to the ship. You ignore them. These people have obviously never seen a triumphant hero returning.

On board, you try to remember where the brig was. You glance at the wallmaps, but you can't take your eye off her for long or risk her wandering away. Still, you're sure you're heading in the right direction until you bump into Irina.

The blonde woman looks from you to her, then back at you, then down at your gun, "Amos, what exactly is going on here?"

"A suspected Avalonian spy who seems far too happy about being here. I ran into her while I was fishing. What's the best way to the brig without her seeing anything too important?" You question the Bahamutcorp technician.

"A...what?" She blinks, then smiles, "Well done, Amos. Down the hall, take one of the lifts to Floor 3, the cells will be straight ahead. You'd better gag her so she doesn't corrupt anyone else."

"Irinaaaaa!" Your captive protests.

Irina looks at her without a shred of remorse or pity, "I'd gag her right now. Was she taking a nap when you found her?"

"Well, yes." You're dreadfully confused.

"I thought so. Lock her up." She nods.

"How can you do this to me!?" Lin-Lin wails.

"You humiliated me in front of the entire crew, skipped an emergency briefing, and then...knowing you would be in trouble...you snuck away from the ship to go sleep by the river, forcing ME to run all of the final pre-mission checks on the mecha we're sending. Utterly irresponsible, the Avalonians could have known everything about this ship if they'd found you before Amos did. Have fun in the brig, Marilyn." She smiles an executioner's smile.

"...So why is he Amos and not Corporal, are you guys...?" Marilyn makes a gesture, forming her index finger and thumb on one hand into a circle and poking the forefinger of her other hand through it.

You have never, ever seen an art pencil hurled so hard and so fast at someone's forehead. The eraser strikes squarely between the cat-eared woman's eyes with enough force to snap her head back, "Mya!"

"Oh." The realization hits, and you smack yourself in the forehead, "Oh, damn it!"

"It isn't your fault, I bet she didn't bother trying to correct you." Irina consoles you.

"She said I'd have to come with her and that her boss was interested in me." She shrugs.

"Cap'n was very impressed with the way you handled yourself under pressure, yep~" Marilyn grins.

Irina grabs her by the ear, "Don't look so smug, there's a nice warm cell waiting for your arrival, and for dinner I'll be preparing gruel with snails in it just for you."

"Nyat fair! Soppit! Rinaaaaa!" Lin-Lin wails.

"For the last time, it's Ms. Gaunt to you!" Irina begins shaking her.

"Perhaps she should, uh, be put to work instead?" You suggest, "Shetland maintenance bay duty or something?"

Irina blinks, "We don't have any Shetlands. Innsmouth's local guard does, but..."

You sigh, she's clearly not military, "No, nevermind. You don't need to have actual Shetlands for Shetland bay duty, Irina."

She blinks, "How utterly curious."

Lin-Lin grin-grins, "Soooo does he have to call you Ms. Gaunt?"

If looks could kill, Irina's would have exterminated Lin-Lin's entire family and exorcised their shades.

"She worked soooo haaaaard on your mech. Stinking of vodka and ranting about showing them all, passing out at her workbench and waking up screaming about thruster differentials and demanding I fetch her parts. What ardent passion! I was so inspired!" Lin-Lin's eyes sparkle innocently.

Marilyn grins, "That doesn't explain the pin-up."

"I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST A SPARE PIECE OF SHEET METAL!" The blonde snaps angrily.

"Shaped like the side of a repeating plasma rifle, right, right." Marilyn starts to saunter away, then turns her head with the most feline smile you've ever seen, "Oh, he said his type is strong-willed women who work hard, in case you were wondering~" She waggles her eyebrows, then ducks as a drawing compass whizzes past her head. Irina pulls a handful of pencils from her pocket in the way a ninja might draw out a handful of throwing knives, projectiles flying down the hallway after the laughing, fleeing Qu'liri woman.

"Irina, stop. If you kill her you'll double your workload." You put a hand on her shoulder, and she halts midway through winding up to throw. You start gathering up her pencils while she watches you, a small smile on her face.

"Maybe you were right not to trust her, I can't believe she'd say things like that." She hmphs, crossing her arms.
