Welcome back, everyone, to the fiftieth installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest! What a long, strange trip it has been, hasn't it? Speaking of long and strange, you're Roarke Starwind again for a while. Although there might be more Amos action later on tonight.

Last time, you solved your problems by taking your shirt off, a move that your sainted mentor would have surely given a celestial thumbs-up to from the afterlife. Countess Loriette Marie le Kennedy is laying down and getting some air, Clemmy and Karen have resumed work on the S-Flowerhorn, and Samantha is pulling you along by the arm. She's wearing one of her frilly dresses, not her pilot suit or old military uniform, and seems to be in a very cheerful mood.
>>
>>48855068

Sam's excited, then again we did just take our shirt off.
>>
When ee get a chance lets tell Gretchen we want to do an interview for her and for her to tell her fans we'll answer any question then send in to get as many people as possible watching, and then at the end we hype up our tourney
>>
>>48855299
Also check on Fatima
>>
>>48855326
Isn't she talking to the Caliph about Lori?
>>
Of course, it's been about half an hour since what happened in the bay, time enough for Samantha to change out of her pilot suit and into the gown. As usual, it's long, dark, ruffled, very modest, and with lacy cups on the chest whose puffiness helps to obscure her small chest a little.

"It's a pain, the Betta being so finicky." She says as she seats you in an ornate chair from a time before magnetic rollers, at a tiny table dainty enough to be described as cute. She bustles around, preparing the tea to her liking, and serving you with as much ceremony is possible in space. Her plain, white apron goes so well with the dress that you can tell both are her work. The dress itself would be perfectly ladylike without the apron, but with it, and with her lacy headband, it creates an unmistakable impression of maid-ness.

Her smile is even warmer than the fragrant brew as she sits down across from you, looking delighted when she observes your expression upon tasting it, "It's good, isn't it?"

>>
>>48855347

Yes. This, incidentally, is how you got the secret best result from that conversation, the way you also got the secret best result from your initial date with Samantha.
>>
>>48855068
Ey, made it. Been playing the new Super Robot Wars game and been trying to make the original Gundam with Mekton. Been trying to get the learning computer and special beam rifle just right.
>>
>>48855427
>special beam rifle

Huh? AFAIK the OG Gundam's rifle wasn't really special. it was just the first of its kind.
>>
>>48855427
Im prettt sure the rifle was more of Amuro then the hardware
>>
>>48855471
>>48855493
IIRC, that beam rifle was the first energy weapon of its kind. Prior to the G Project, all beam weaponry were starship-class only.
>>
>>48855427
The beam rifle of the original gundam was a first of its kind but rather not unique. Instead of feeding a beam weapon directly from the suit's generator, its host ship(White base) could instead charge magazines worth of shots(or individual e-caps, each of which was a bullet) so that it could be shot in a manner more like a conventional gun.

So basically, a powerful beam weapon with a magazine size.
>>
Oh Wong did you see who came back to /m/?
>>
"Delicious." You confirm, "What's wrong with the Betta?"

She makes a little face, "The Betta uses SOUL parts, but it has a smaller frame than most SOUL designs because it's built for stealth and infiltration. Almost all unnecessary weight has been stripped off of it. According to Karen, that's the cause of the problem, everything was built to be so efficient and the stealth modifications dictate so much of its space that it's a pain adding anything to it."

"Maybe some external components? You could add another limb or something if you want more weapons?" You suggest.

She shrugs, "Perhaps, but then those would have to be integrated into the cloaking system too, so it's expensive no matter what." She daintily sips her tea, and offers you some chocolate-dipped wafers.

"That's unavoidable. The Kaiser's weight has been bothering me, but...why are you giggling?" You look askance at her.

"R-Roarke, you're saying your mech is fat." She covers her mouth with her hands.

"The tonnage makes a difference to maneuverability, if it was a little more efficient I could upsize some of its components without it hurting me too much performance-wise. Besides, the Kaiser's weight is all muscle." You insist.

She snickers, shaking her head, "Just don't phrase it that way around Karen."

>>48855471
Well, in a way the beam rifle was more armor piercing than anything else. It's why rather than going for heavy armor a lot of machines went with lighter once beam weapons became common since the beams made a lot of conventional armor useless. So I might give it armor piercing and magazines like >>48855558
said. The learning computer will be a mix of INT boost gear, target analyzer, and the ACE system.

>>
>>48855597
I don't think he would have to add ap since the built in difference between the beam and slug weapons in the book should be enough, since most of the armor in 0079 was made to handle bullets so while it looks weak it would be fine in canon

"I think my skull is thick enough to survive. She wouldn't hit me that hard." You think. She once bopped you pretty good with her wrench, you were unconscious for a while.

"Valor is quite alluring." Her smile widens, "You dirty peasant boy. Fufufu~"

You grumble, "The last thing I need right now is to be worrying about that woman. She's more work than Fatima."

"Are you saying I was the easiest hostage?" She giggles again.

"You clung to my ship through a warp gate, then grappled my First Mate." You point out, "You kidnapped yourself."

She shrugs gracefully, "I knew where I wanted to be." She grins again, "...Which proved to be on an infirmary bed with a dirty peasant boy."

"Isn't it odd for you to say that with such an aristocratic expression when you're dressed like a domestic servant?" You point out, "It feels more like you're my dirty peasant girl."

Her smile becomes a little nostalgic, "Oh...this?" She reaches up and touches her headband, "Well, yes, my family is quite wealthy, but my parents were always very absorbed with their work. I know it sounds strange and you'll probably think less of me, but when I was a little girl I used to pretend the head maid was my mother. She was the most gentle, elegant, refined woman I knew, and I looked up to her a great deal. She raised Pierre and I like her own children. I wish I could say that dressing this way is how I remind myself that one's station doesn't necessarily reflect one's inner nobility...but to tell you the truth, I really just think it looks pretty and I always have." She smiles cheerfully, "Things aren't always complicated."

Yes. Yes she did. She wanted the Char dick and she did not get it.

Now that I think about it, Quess in CCA went loco because she wanted Char's dick too.

>>
>>48856243

If CCA wasn't a movie I would have had the same problem I had with Macross, where I can't finish it because I hate the female lead and every time she's onscreen so much.
>>
>>48856154
Papsmear may have also had bullshit newtype brainwashing powers. Its kinda unclear if he's just really charismatic or is cheating. Also, have a custom laser rifle.
"Gerbera" Custom Machine gun: 6K +1 WP Autofire 5 27CP
Now I just need to build the mech to house it. I was thinking of having a non ace version without the autofire custom gun, and an ace version with it and officer armor. Now, should I use the Gebera Tetra Kai for the normal unit, or the officer variant?
>>
"Ah, speaking of clothes!" She claps her hands together, with an expression of excitement on her face, "I'm working on my uniform! For the Kestrels! I can't keep wearing military gear now that I'm a pirate, right? I wanted something a little dramatic, to show I'm a special character, but not too overstated. The headband stays, naturally. I just can't quite decide how long the skirt should be...ah, and of course, any other input you have is welcome." She smiles cutely.

This quest made me start watching the original Mobile Suit Gundam.

Things I'm Wondering:

Are Oscar and Marker the only people on White Base who aren't completely retarded?

What's up with Char being so willing to murder civilians?
>>
>>48856635
You know what sells in japan now? Cute girls doing cute things. Stupid nips dont care about robots any more.
>>
>>48856682
In the beginning sure, but almost every member of the crew is rookies who weren't even in the military long at all, and Char doesn't really kill any civies if I remember right
>>
>>48856682
He probably figured out that after the colony drop nobody would notice a few extra dead civilians.
Also Bright's pretty nonretarded. Amuro's decent most of the time.

"Garterbelts!" You insist almost before she's finished speaking.

She blushes, "Yes, I already thought of that. And stockings. I know you like those too."

You grin, "I always thought I was subtle."

She smiles demurely, "I'm a trained intelligence officer."

"Touche." You concede, "So what are you going to do while wearing this? If you're bent over a console and it's too short I'll never get any work done."

She grins mischievously, "Bent over a console? I thought one sat at those. Whatever could you be thinking about, hm?" She licks her dark lips just a little, "I'm a pilot, not a bridge bunny, but I'm adding that to the list. On the bridge...you're too naughty, Roarke, it's not fair. You're corrupting me." She bats her eyelashes unconvincingly.

"You corrupted me and you know it." You reply, "You know, about stockings, a certain friend who's knowledgeable on the subject says that the zone between the top of a woman's stockings and the hem of her skirts is among the greatest things imaginable."

She snorts with laughter, "Did he call it zatta ryusomething? Because I think I know which friend you mean."

You nod solemnly, "I can't just dismiss the advice of the rightful shogun of Japan. I, too, wish to see this holy ground, this absolute territory." You lean across the table and clasp her small hands in yours, looking into her eyes, "Will you give me this glimpse of paradise, Samantha?"

She nods, staring up at you, "You...you're entrusting it to me, so I can't let you down." She blushes a little, "I may have some challenges other girls don't, but I'll do my best to be a good wife." She blushes even more, "I...I never really expected you to ask me to...to be your wife so...so it made me really happy. I like all of the other girls, even if a certain one of them really probably would have pulled a sword on the Countess if you hadn't distracted her by being so cute." She leans up and pinches one of your cheeks.

Bright has some issues but honestly, it just seems like so much of the internal issues the crew has could be solved by talking to each other.

On another note, I just finished the Episode where Ramba Real dies. I don't think I've been this sad about a character death in ages.

Welcome to 90% of dramas ever.
Also if you play gihren's greed you can get to that point and get the option to give Ramba and his guys Doms to fight whitebase. If you do he takes it out and survives.

"And I'm going to do my best to get along with them all!" She resolves, "Karen's easily my best friend, the sort of sister I always wanted, Rosita is really refined and charming and she does her best even if she tries a little TOO hard, and...even if she's unstable, Clemmy definitely loves you more than she loves hitting people, and that's a really special miracle." She smiles sweetly, "I even get along with Fatima, even if she's not always as mature as she thinks she is." She glances around as if expecting the Martian woman to pop out of nowhere, "Did you ever think about why she was always so mean to you in particular?"

"I beat up her bodyguards and carried her off the bridge of her ship over my shoulder while she was wearing a nightgown, in front of her crew. Then I forced her into a pilot suit, wrapped it in tape so she couldn't kick the monitors out, and carried her back to the Kaiser." You explain.

She blinks, then stares at you, "Really? You didn't duel her or anything? I sort of assumed..."

You shrug, "No, she was napping and we took out her guards pretty quickly." That's a deliberate understatement. You did it singlehandedly in about ten seconds.

"I still think she was trying to make herself hate you so she could stay loyal to the man she was supposed to marry. She had it bad for you, Roarke, from the very first time I saw her. That's probably why she and Karen didn't get along at first." Samantha smiles as though it was obvious.

"Ah. Hmm." You're quite witty today. You wonder what else Samantha has figured out about people that you hadn't noticed yourself, you always thought it was your impressive harmonica-playing skills that won her over, "Why are we talking about other women when I'm here with you?" You smile at her.

She smiles back, and pushes the table carefully to one side without spilling its contents, "Because I don't intend to do any more talking. That's why." Quick as a cat, she pounces.

>>
>>48856962
Because three ace pilots in three custom mechs can do a lot of damage.
>>48856966
I'm not sure but I think amuro survives. Plus the real difficulty comes from the army of other mechs the feddies crank out every turn. Unlike the show they are not shy about handing out the prototype gundams.
>>
>>48856966
Not really, since Zeon's only real hope of winning is by blitzing the feds before they can start mass producing high end GMs like the Commands and sniper 2s.

taking out White Base just means that the show's event chain ends.
>>
>>48857022

Why did Robert E. Lee fight for the Confederacy?

The Spacenoids had legitimate grievances and Zeon was always portrayed as morally grey and honestly having a point except for their die-hard determination to be led by psychopaths. In ZZ, Neo Zeon was doing so little wrong that Haman Karn had to remove potato with Mashmyre "I swore on this rose to be gentle to civilians" Cello just to establish that Neo Zeon was the bad guys and the AEUG was still good.

Well, from what we are told (but not what we see), the space colonies and such had some issues that Earth could have helped with. Legit stuff, but not NEARLY enough to cause the war and such. The issue came form everyone in charge being fucking monsters, and the people under them being inexplicably loyal to the death to said monsters. One can only assume it's due to guys like Char. Man was a fucking piece of trash, and should have been hung by the neck until dead for the evil, psychotic shit he did, and just generally being human refuse. Buuut, he was also obscenely charismatic and the sort of ace that other aces wish they could be. Raw magnetism that lets people look past his evil shit and just see the ultra-cool badass.
>>
>>48857068
Classic Zeon is has legitimate point about independence but they threw that out of an airlock when they attacked colonies with poison gas fudged the drop n the one that fell on Australia.

So yeah, pretty ok if you ignore the genocide.
>>
>>48857148

Keep in mind, the Federation government is like the EU but worse. Like, if the UN had actual power. The Federation literally sold a giant asteroid to a man whose modus operandi was crashing giant asteroids into Earth, because he paid them with gold and the elites knew they could get offworld. The Federation is like...imagine if /pol/ was right all along and the globalist illuminati won. It's that bad. Consider how little time it took the Titans to crop up if you don't believe me.

Well, foremost was that what the spacenoids saw of Earth was mainly the paradise like spots. Tourist cities, nature preserves, etcetera. They never saw the slums and third world shit. So they thought Earth was a paradise while they were stuck in tin cans that were usually nice enough, but had problems. Further, the colonies weren't really self sufficient, so they were on somewhat tight leashes so they could keep their shipments of supplies coming in. Pluuus like's been said already, the Feddie higher ups were pieces of shit, so there's probably a lot of shady shit we don't explicitly know about that they did and had issues with.

Long story short, they thought Earth were utter assholes, and wanted independence from them.

I am massively oversimplifying, and missing some key points, but that's the basics.

A few hours later, you go stumbling out of Samantha's room. She's curled up on her bed, tuckered out, and you flick the lights off as you go. You cleanse yourself, then go wandering in search for Gretchen, because you expect she's made her way onto the ship to check the flight data from the Pumpkinseed IIs her friends took to Mars.

Unfortunately, you're still not used to the new Rhinehawk, so you wind up at the mess hall. Which is fortunate, because you see Gretchen eating in a corner, with her friends surrounding her. All five of them are fussing over Athena, who is playing with some of Gretchen's mech figurines.

You also see something rather shocking. The Countess is sitting at a table, trying not to grimace every time she bites into a meal bar. Sitting across from her, munching contentedly, is old Basil Montgomery. The two are speaking rather intently, and the Countess is looking more and more downcast. Eventually, with a nod to her, he gets up and walks away, saluting you in passing.

The golden-haired girl hunches down over her food, but as you walk by, she grabs your arm as though she somehow saw you coming, "That man, you would say he is an honest one, yes? You trust him, no?"

So Full Frontal was wrong? The Sides couldn't just economically declare independence from the Earth?

"I do, why?" You don't resist too hard as she tugs you down next to her. "Basil's a steady hand, and he's good at training the new recruits.

"I smell a different perfume on your collar this time, Rowarc." She comments archly.

"That's one of the occupational hazards of being a space pirate, Countess. It's a danger I've braved more times than I can count." You respond plainly.

"So I am sure, naughty boy." She rallies herself a little and manages to smile, "Rowarc, for causing a scene, I am so sorry. You are an officer, I cannot be forgiven for making you humiliate yourself in front of your people. Mon poor duckling." She ruffles your hair until it's sticking up all over the place.

"Please, they should be used to me being shirtless by now." You protest. Across the cafeteria, you see Mohammed sitting with Avi and some of the other crew. Shukriya, Fatima's cousin, is laughing and patting his head as if he was a kitten. You share a long-suffering glance.

She becomes more serious, "Oui? Ah, but that is enough of the pleasantries. There are things I must know." She sighs deeply, "Sir Baseel, he has told me much that is hard to accept. The good along with the bad." Her fists clench, "He told me about New Aleppo and the child bombers. He told me about the smoke that blotted out the sky and the spores that made men kill their comrades. He told me about a thousand terrible things." Her shoulders shake a little, and her voice nearly cracks, "Are they true, Roarke? Are they all, really, true?"

"Yes. My mom..." Your voice drops a little, it's not a pleasant memory, "My mom piloted a support Garron. They're not frontline mecha, so she didn't see the worst of it, but it still cut her deep inside. Even years after the war, she'd get tremors when she tried making salad. She made good potatoes, but when it came to cutting greenery, she just couldn't do it without losing her head. Dad never bought her flowers on their anniversary, it was always chocolates, she'd share them with us and say it was protection against losing her figure." You shake your head, "We never asked her for stories about the War, but dad mentioned once that she got a little too close to one of the Green Men and was forced into close combat. In a Garron. A lot of her friends died, apparently. Seeing that kind of terror in your own parent's eyes just from some lettuce or roses is something you don't want anyone else to experience." Your own voice is pretty subdued. "I won't say it was all the Green Men, not after the Green Skulls terrorized the Belt the way they terrorized Mars during the Cleansing, but nobody's hands were clean, monstrous things happened and the Green Men were guilty of a lot of them. They destroyed entire worlds, Lori, entire planets. I can't even imagine a planet being just...wiped out."

"Sir Baseel was from a colony I know of. Le Duc told me of it, the one who fired was of noble blood and a member of le Rothschild family like the Duke himself, and the Duke slew him without hesitation. Ritual suicide is offered to one's lord much more often than it it accepted, so I hope the boy was sincere when he proffered his life." She shakes her head, "Better he had not fired. Even if the ship was damaged, even if it put our mission at risk, I believe in the honor of the knights of Avalon and that we would have bravely triumphed regardless. We are soldiers, we accept the risk of death when we don our armor and take up weapons, civilians make no such decision."

"Suleiman 1. I was there before it was destroyed. Initially, the UJCIDF blamed me for it." You manage to smile wryly.

She tsks angrily, "Le Gas Knights are honorless curs, it surprises me not they would blame mon duckling for their ineptitude most gross."

You frown at her, "Easy, now, I'm marrying two of them."

"Two!? You poor soul!" She shakes her head firmly, "Keep them in line, or they will be unmanageable." She sighs, "I am distracting myself on purpose, I fear. Ooohhh..." Her shoulders slump, "Ma Déesse. I cannot side with such actions as I have heard, no matter the cause. The Lady's people did things that were unforgivable, things barbare et monstrueux!" Her fist hits the table so hard you're surprised she didn't bend the frame, heads turning around to stare at you all around the mess hall from the noise, "I cannot tolerate it! I shall NOT tolerate it! Yet the Lady herself was not on Mars, non? She was innocent. Sometimes, family goes astray, it is not her fault." She looks up at you with tears in her eyes for the second time today, "I...I am not responsible for this...this evil for being one of her Paladins, non? Please, Rowarc, please tell me I am not a monster."

But as for the woman past the uniform, I have great faith she'll make the right choices when it comes to it. While they say clothes make the women I hope others will see past them as well.

Well, for starter, he's not main branch Jew and is a bastard so any real claim to that name or the training involve wouldn't be ingrained to him. Also, if he was that jewish, he'd try and have us pay for the drink.

Second, I think it's pretty damn hard to say anyone is untrustworthy just because they follow the Lady. She herself may not be, but by the sounds of it, she pretty much picked a bunch of kids and cripples with loose ties and big problems for her paladins. Give them nice bodies, good positions, and legitimize them and you have some highly devoted guard dogs.

Besides, Avi is a Jew as well and he's done nothing but help us.

Privately, you don't think the Lady of the Woods is as innocent as she thinks. Nobody who makes human mecha 'rain from the sky' while fighting solo against Floyd Beck, Rudolph Merrow, and whatever units they brought with them is an innocent pacifistic flower girl of peace and understanding. On the other hand, you don't know her. Maybe she was the one exception. Maybe she really was crying for the people her kin slaughtered and the Duke was wrong. You don't know enough to be certain either way.

What you do know is this, "You're not a monster at all." You pat her head, and she makes a cute little oofing sound in surprise as you ruffle her hair. It has incredible thickness and volume, and is obviously meticulously cared for, "You're human. Prone to all the things humans feel and suffer through. That's the important thing, you humanize your oponents and you face them like humans. Space may have divided us, but we're all humans just trying to live the best we can, doing what we think is right." The image of Miles pops into your head, but you don't want to destroy the Countess' view of humanity by discussing Miles, "You follow a woman who has done, from what you and by extension I know, nothing but good for you and those you care about. The Green Men were people, it's always possible at least one was a good person, and I cannot blame you for following her. That said, your choices are your own and you're accountable for no one else's sins...but you wear a uniform, and that uniform has history that can and will make you face the grudges left by the War. It's going to be a trial, but I have faith you'll make the right decisions." You smile.

"She IS a good person! The best person! When you meet her...when WE meet her, together, you will know!" She throws her arms around you, "Oh Rowarc, you will be a Paladin superb!" She nestles against you, her voice elevated and full of tremulous cheer.

"No, I won't." You don't want to sadden her, but this has to be made absolutely clear.

"Non? But it is a reward tremendous!" She looks up at you, frowning, "Rowarc, do not be so hard on yourself. Your birth is not an object, so..."

You put a fingertip on her lips, "I serve no one but my people. I am, I have always been, and I will surely die as, a pirate free from any flag or creed but my own."

She pouts, "You would think differently if you met her. All of humanity would."

"My mind is made up." You smile and ruffle her hair again, "I'm very stubborn when I have to be. Besides, it would put my people in danger."

"Fence-sitting will make your bottom sting, mon duckling." She grumbles.

"My fence is the asteroid belt. It's quite wide enough for me." Your smile doesn't falter, neither does your resolve. You're your own man, and you're responsible for enough people without taking on a flag and a cause you didn't choose.

Richard and Miles pass by, and you hold a fist up. Richard taps it with his own, and pauses to see what you want, "What's up, Dude?"

"Take the Countess to the comms room, link up with Auditorium's ansible, and get in touch with the Duke. He needs to know what's happening, and he should be on Auditorium at the same time as the others for the concert, tournament, and negotiations." You explain, standing up.

"For your return, of course. You knew you were being ransomed, right?" You smile cheerfully. Just keep smiling, Roarke. Keep smiling and hope you avoid another explosion of knightly rage.

"Oui. I am pleased you are welcoming our nobility with Strider jousts and performances by minstrels, but...what others?" Her eyes narrow just slightly.

"Certain parties have offered vast sums of money for your head. I figured the most fair thing to do would be to have all interested parties, including the Duke, make their offer. That way, it makes it plain that I'm neutral. Simply giving you back without giving the Martians and Jovians a chance to bid would give my enemies in the UJCIDF the excuse they need to launch a full military strike on me."

"All of this could be avoided by choosing the right side, Rowarc." She warns, trying not to puff up with indignation. "The Duke is wealthy and Avalon is generous, and I have no doubt that the Lady will offer most handsomely for my return, but...the most obvious gift she has to give, you would refuse shortsightedly. Mon duckling, this is difficult, what will become of me if we cannot match their offer? You give her a big grin, "Then I would have a hundred new starships to take you back with, to my fief that is outside their laws."

"Rowarc, you are being silly." She huffs.

Miles interjects with a cheeky grin of her own, "Nope, he's completely serious. If there's high-grade muff on the line, he'd wrestle a tiger and invade Mars in a produce transport ship."

"What is this 'moff'?" The Countess asks suspiciously, "Like the furry thing that covers the face in cold weather, non?"

"What? No, I mean pus-" Miles manages to say before Richard interrupts.

"What she means is that your safety is at the top of Dude's list of concerns. He's got a soft heart." The big man smiles. Richard's smile is the most gentle-looking thing about him, a window into the soul of a man whose hobby is meticulously growing and shaping zero-g hydroponic bonsai trees, the only person you've never heard speak a single harsh word to an enemy over Bluegill Joe.

"I guess the secret is out." You sigh, "I have no intention of seeing you executed by them. Doubly so if it means a feather in Fairchild's cap. If, after you go back, you choose to seek death on the battlefield...that's your decision, but I'll mourn you, even if I mourn alone. But if none of the offers I get are any good, I'm keeping you. Say hello to the Duke for me! Oh, Richard, Miles...keep my decision quiet. I'm not stupid enough to think that certain women wouldn't be angry if they found out I don't want to see Lori killed. I know she's killed a few Martians in battle, so have I, she gave me a good fight and if I'm going to hell for sparing her then I'll go smiling."

The Countess leans down and surprises you by kissing your cheek, then claps her hands, "Mon escorts, to your communications room! Toot sweet, I must report mon failure and hope my people pay for me." She glances back at you, then gestures imperiously for Miles and Richard to lead her where she wants to go. They depart, and you finally get to relax.

"Breaking news! A scandalous new affair across the lines of the battlefield!? A rescue turned romantic!? A certain ace reporter who very kindly accepted the request to babysit a certain very cute little girl would simply love to know!" Gretchen slides smoothly, with pizzazz, into the seat across from you, propping her chin on her elbow and staring you in the eye.

Athena giggles from across the mess hall. The Maximum Thrusters crew are doing her hair.

"Just who I wanted to see." You smile at her, "Hello Gretchen. Cuter than ever, I see."

"If you're going to compromise my journalistic integrity, mister, do it when we're alone and I can make it fun for you." She waggles her eyebrows cheerfully.

"Alright. As soon as we're done here." You smile warmly at her.

"W-what? Really? Oh...I...I should have worn sexier underwear or something..." She blushes.

"What's underneath is sexier than any underwear. First things first, I need to put out an interview regarding this hostage. Naturally, exclusive coverage goes to you." You wink and begin to lay out your proposal.

"Tell your fans that I'll be answering questions on air, so have them send them in." You start.

"You don't realize how much work that is, do you? Even if I only give them a day, I'll be swamped with fanmail for you!" She grumbles.

"So pick the best ones. Recruit whoever you need to help, provided they aren't already doing something for me." You continue, "After I answer questions, we'll talk about recent events, my defeat of the Anseis, my upcoming nuptials, that sort of thing, then we'll end by announcing the joint concert and the tourney."

"Nuptials, huh? Makes a girl feel kind of left out. Stupid journalistic integrity, I'd make a top-class bride." Gretchen grumbles more, but not unhappily. "You know, Athena told me a really interesting story when we were visiting the beach here, during your trip to Mars. No pressure, but whenever you want to put what really happened to Suleiman 1 on the air..."

"I don't want to put Doctor Clancy or Athena at risk." You reply firmly, "They've been through enough. All I want is for that little girl to grow up safe, happy, and loved, and for her father to live the comfortable life he's earned. He can't resist helping us with our mecha, anyway, as far as I'm concerned he's earned his keep and I can afford to pay for his expenses. So long as they're the only source of testimony, it isn't safe bringing them out. Besides, if it's their word against Fairchild's, who is the public going to believe?"

"Don't underestimate the public, Roarke. Not everyone would believe them, but some people will, some people always do, and sometimes that's enough." She smirks, "But on the whole, you're right. You sounded pretty cool there, you know?"

"I'm just being honest." You're quite sincere, you were just saying what you were thinking, "How soon can we air?"

"Tomorrow." She answers with zero hesitation.

"Tomorrow?" You ask.

"Tomorrow." She confirms smugly, "It would be tonight, but my boss keeps a schedule and by the time things got set up over here it would be too late to get peak audience numbers. Plus, I need to put the request for questions online."

"You seem awfully casual about this." You remark.

"The footage of the fight and the fact that it happened were news five minutes after it ended, thanks to NAVIgator. The media has been covering it in detail, but nobody knows anything about the blue mech yet, so it's all been analysis of that little bit of footage and no hard facts." She sighs, "I bet he's so cool in person."

"He's a good kid. He takes after his father a lot, and his dad taught me everything I know." You smile.

"Someone had to. I studied your file, you were a lot angrier when you started out." She raises an eyebrow questioningly.

"I was reckless back then." You pause for a moment, and think seriously about your litany of deeds, "More reckless. I was angry, and stubborn, and impatient. Captain Ozark had a lot of work straightening me out. After First Mate Thaddeus died a few years ago, he picked me to take over for him. I was as surprised as anyone."

"Not everyone was surprised, actually." She wags a finger, "I'm a reporter, I ask questions and I talk to people. I've been following your rules to the letter, but I'm an investigator at heart and I still like to know things just for the sake of knowing them. I've always been a nosy sort of person." She shrugs with affable nonchalance, "Your girlfriend in the mechbay knew, we've talked shop a few times. She says her grandpa knew too. According to her, it was obvious you were being groomed for it from the start. Pretty good decision, right? You wouldn't believe how proud she is of you." She grins.

"Yahknowhat, I'm just gonna..." Gretchen pulls out her PC and fiddles with it, "Gonna put the request for questions online riiiiight now and send a liiiittle message to my boss. Giving everyone as much warning as possible is smart, right? Right." Her fingers fly over the holoscreen, but she keeps talking, "I never thanked you properly, did I?"

"Thanked me for what?" You're a little off-balance with the speed she talks at.

She looks at you flatly, "What do you mean, 'for what'? There's a lot I'm willing to do for a story, but I don't like being creeped on, and General Fairchild seems like she could've sunk my career if she wanted to. Add those facts together, and you see why being kidnapped was kind of convenient. I didn't exactly try to shoot you when you and Red were on my transport ships out of your mecha." She makes a fingergun gesture at you and winks. "Besides, I'm going to be famous when this is done. If it's ever done. Ah, you know what, call it a thank you or call it...inspiring me, but..." She takes your hand, "Let's go find a broom closet. You really were a jerk when we fought, but it was nice when you held my hand. Even if it was just pretend."

"Just to be clear, did you deliberately aim to shoot my mech in the dick?" You have to know. It's important.

"Yes. I'm not sorry, either. Lying is awful." She wrinkles her nose in disdain for those who do not believe in truth.

You smile down at her, "Who said I was lying, that time? Who even said I was implying anything untrue?" You gently tug one of her twintails, and her face goes red. Casually, you scoop her up in a princess carry.

"Roarke!" She yelps.

"Is something wrong?" You challenge, carrying her to the door.

"Hi Mister Roarke!" Athena smiles and waves on the other side, backed by the Maximum Thrusters quartet. Gretchen's friends look directly at her and her face goes dark red.

"Hello Athena. Did you have fun with Gretchen?" You smile pleasantly, concealing the fact that this really isn't the time.

"Yep! She taught me how to frag suckers in Bluegill Joe!" Athena smiles hugely, radiant with innocence, "Double-tap the cockpit for the kill, yay!" she claps her hands together, "Why are you carrying her?" She points at Gretchen.

Gretchen slowly turns her face away from you, her features as casual as possible.

"Liars are awful, right Athena?" You point out, nobly.

"Right!" The little girl nods seriously.

"So I'll tell you the truth. I'm carrying her because I caught her." You nod solemnly.

"Oh. Is someone going to catch me someday?" Athena tilts her head to the side.

"Maybe. You might be too fast for them." You chuckle, "Anyway, Gretchen has to go to her room and rest for a while, she's had a lot of fun and she wants to lay down for a bit."

"I'm very fast." Athena notes.

"She's not kidding. Taking her shopping was a chase, she's at least three times as fast as me." Gretchen grumps.

"At any rate, we're going to go be alone and talk because she's interviewing me for the news. You go on and play, now, I'll see you and your dad later, alright little buddy?" You put on your best charming grin, and Athena nods enthusiastically before scampering off.

Gretchen whistles innocently despite looking like the least innocent person in the world.

It would be justice to say that you punish her for her misdeeds. You don't.

It would be justice to tease her for teaching her charge bad language and all kinds of awful Bluegill Joe habits. You don't.

You're gentle with Gretchen, instead. You take your time, and you do it on a proper bed instead of in a broom closet. You appreciate her, and she's surprisingly shy about it, but when you leave her asleep, wrapped in a blanket, she has a huge smile on her face and a blush on her cheeks.

It's said that stress increases the libido, but of course the one saying that was Captain Ozark.
