Vegeta's smug, irritating grin seems to be directed at you specifically. "So. These 'Dragon Balls' can grant any wish, correct?"

"Nope." Lapis tells him flatly, relaxing himself. "Not quite ANY wish."

The grin fades as Vegeta looks to him. "Tch. Okay, then what CAN they grant?"

He shrugs. "Lots of stuff. But if you, say, asked the Eternal Dragon to make your pal's head explode, I don't think he'd be capable of doing that. Though if you wanted to finally add a few centimeters to your height and stop compensating with that hair, well, worth a shot."

Vegeta squints at Lapis. "Don't try to play smart with me, Earthling. You're clearly not very good at it."

You see Lazuli crack a little smile. "Bro, you gonna take that?"

"...I'm going to refrain from talking with the two of you for the rest of my time on this miserable little planet." The Saiyan prince crosses his arms and focuses back on you. "Tuffle, Freeza intended to use these things to gain Immortality. Are they capable of granting that wish, or was he deluded by someone into believing that the case?"

By wishing himself immortal, he's essentially admitting that he's too afraid of the possibility of losing to ever engage in a fair fight. That's not very princely, especially not for a prince of all Sayians. Goku gets really excited about a fight when it becomes apparent that he'll have to work really hard to squeeze out a narrow victory. It sounds more like an awfully Frieza-like thing to do.

It's one thing to seek every possible advantage over an opponent, but that'd be like going into a drinking contest and declaring a rule that you can substitute water for alcohol anytime you want. Sure, you'll probably win every drinking contest from there on, but you've essentially rigged the game from the start.

Vegeta gains a slight but noticeable bit of irritation. "Answer the-"

You sigh. "Of course they could. And a better use of your time would be wishing for the Earth's most comfortable pair of underwear."

Peppa and Gohan snicker at that. Goku ruffles his kids hair. "Eh, betcha you'd be able to make that too, Maple. Actually... you and Piccolo did that once, didn't you? When we looked for Konpei."

You laugh, but keep your focus and explain. "Okay, for starters, Immortality would block you off from the Afterlife. Which, honestly, sounds like a pretty nice place. I got a peek not too long ago, recall. Secondly, you'd probably be stuck in a state where you can't pull off that good ol' 'stronger every time you get close to death' trick. If your body can never die, why would it need something like that? And third, I am about 95% certain that if you made that wish, Towa and her cohorts would be on you like a mold on cheese."

The first one doesn't seem to worry him, though the second comment does give him reason for concern. The third draws his curiosity. "What makes you assume that, and what's more, what makes you assume this Towa person could ever hope to stop Nappa and I while we're Immortal?"

"I also doubt that the second part is valid, Tuffle." Nappa comments. "That is merely an accelerated version of natural bodily self-maintenance and repair. Even if we can't die, we would still experience pain and damage. Or at the very least, we could word the wish to make sure we keep that ability in check. But nice try."

Just about everyone but Vegeta seem surprised by Nappa's comment. You smile and nod. "Well, good thinking on that part. But Towa definitely could take you both and perform gods know what kind of awful experiments on you two. An eternity of near-death, prevented from ever getting stronger. Doesn't sound all that appealing, does it?" Vegeta and Nappa don't quite have a response for that one. "Lastly... well, think about it this way. Immortality is for cowards."

Vegeta's eyes seem like daggers as he lowers his arms, fists clenched. "What did you just say?"

You give him a shrug. "Your hearing isn't that bad, is it Vegeta? Immortality is for cowards. Cowards like Freeza are ones that want to live forever and rule the universe with an iron fist. But Immortality isn't a Saiyan way of doing things now, is it? No possible challenge could ever come to you. You'd always get back up and try again, unable to suffer defeat, unable to experience any thrill of battle. Fight forever? It would be an eternity of boredom. It'd be like going for a drinking contest and being able to switch for water at any given moment."

"...you have an alternative." he comments, not even making it sound like a question. He knows you do.

"If you really do want to live for a long time, maybe give the Kaiju a call and try your hand at the Fountain of Youth. I bet Godzilla would love the challenge, and you'd be earning something instead of just wishing for a 'win button' of sorts."

Nappa gives an exasperated groan. "More Earth secrets. Greeeaaaaat."

Lazuli meanwhile looks at you with concern, nudging you to read her mind. You do so, and... 'Maple, are you crazy? What if he decides to take it all for himself?'

'He'll have to get through Godzilla first.'

Vegeta does seem to consider that, but doesn't change his piercing glare. His smirk reappears. "...perhaps I've found a better wish, then."

The balls can also revive people, but it has to be within a year, and it takes too long for the balls to recharge that if we don't do it now all those people will stay dead.

Vegeta chuckles. "Perhaps. And this is my wish: Knowledge."

Everyone seems to give a combined "Huh?" at that, save Peppa, who backs up to you slightly and glares at the Saiyan Prince with suspicion.

"It's quite simple, really. I wish to know if this..." Vegeta starts to power up, the ground trembling beneath him. His smirk somehow becomes even cockier as he transforms into a Super Saiyan. "...is the limit to the power of Legend. Or if there is something beyond it. Something greater. The true power of The Super Saiyan."

Goku seems to look at him curiously. "That's... I guess that makes sense."

"Though I would rather find out sooner rather than later..." Vegeta comments, gaining an angry glare from Lazuli.

Maple is pretty well-connected in the Afterlife/Otherworld. Maybe he won't even need such a wish if we contact the right people.

Yazai is one of those people for sure. While Vegeta is a long way from being able to wield or even harness such power, there should be some other figures in the afterlife who know about such things.

Vegeta grunts dismissively. "Yazai. The Saiyan traitor. Tuffle, you know just the words to say to piss me off, you know that? Oh my father told me plenty about him. How he thought he was a Super Saiyan. How he was proven wrong. I'd rather die myself than speak with that failure of a Saiyan."

"He wasn't a failure, Vegeta." Goku comments.

He laughs. "Believe what you want to, Kakarot. But the proof stands before you."

"Is it a deal, then?" you ask Vegeta.

He powers down. "As I said. A guarantee that I'll achieve what I want. You have your deal, Tuffle."

"Good. The sooner we're off this planet for good, the better." Nappa grunts, the two of them flying off.

You notice Peppa stick her tongue out at Vegeta as he leaves.

And so, Shenron is called once more. Konkichi stares at the looming Eternal Dragon in awe, while Lazuli humbly makes her wish. "Sheron, I ask of you, please, bring back all the good people who've lost their lives since Cooler's arrival on Planet Brench. All who've died because of..."

Lapis places his hand on his sister's shoulder. "Lazuli, it's okay."

"IT WILL TAKE BUT A MOMENT OF MY TIME." Shenron declares.

"Hoooh. And you guys have encountered him... how many times before?" the green fox man asks.

"Well, let's see..." Goku starts. "Eighter, Gurumez, Acer, Korin's Senzu place, and now, here..."

"Adding to that, King Piccolo's wish, and Chuu Lee's wish." you comment.

"THERE IS A COMPLICATION WITH THIS WISH." Shenron's voice booms. "TWO PLANETS HAVE BEEN DESTROYED AS A RESULT OF THE ACTIONS OF COOLER. BOTH INHABITED. I CANNOT RESTORE THE PLANETS AND REVIVE EVERYONE WHO DIED DUE TO THE SHEER NUMBER OF THEM."

Lazuli's heart seems to sink. "...w-was one of those planets, Brench?"

"IT WAS NOT."

"Well, you can take those who don't have any planets anymore and put them on Brench, can't you? Or... or maybe some other planet where they could survive." she pleads.

"I CAN PUT THEM ONLY PUT THEM ON EARTH FOR THE TIME BEING."

"Shenron, how many people are we talking here?" Krillin asks.

"FOUR AND A HALF BILLION."

Lazuli tugs at her hair. "That... that many?"

"CORRECT."

This... is a bit of a tough one.

"I REQUEST YOU HURRY THIS ALONG." Shenron asks.

"S-sorry! We'll make the wish as soon as we can." Lazuli promises.

Eventually the two boys teleport away, having located Kami. Shenron grows increasingly impatient. "IF YOU WOULD RATHER WAIT AND WISH ANOTHER TIME, PLEASE SEND ME ON MY WAY."

"Agh, we can't wait any longer than this..." Lazuli states. "Why didn't I figure this out sooner?"

"Hey, don't beat yourself up over this." Konkichi states.

Finally, Lapis and Krillin return with Kami... looking rather unhappy. He wordlessly approaches the Dragon Balls, placing his hands forward. Energy seems to flow from him into the Dragon Balls, Shenron's eyes giving off a red glow as he finishes. "They can now grant two wishes. I ask that you bring me to the Lookout once you are done."

"Guess that solves that, Lazuli! Go for it!" you tell her. Kami lets out an exhausted sigh. You approach him, your daughter in your arms still. "...something wrong, Kami?"

You can tell from the look on his face that he doesn't want to answer, but after Lazuli makes her wishes, first to restore the planets, then to revive people. Kami looks to you all. "...I have learned many things about the Dragon Balls on Namek. And how I have made many mistakes."

Goku takes a moment to jump up into the sky and catch the Four-Star Dragon Ball, heading back down to give it to Gohan... who looks at it for a moment, and hands it back to his dad. "It's yours, papa." Goku smiles at that, ruffling his son's hair.

You smile as well, but turn back to Kami. "What do you mean?"

Kami grips his staff. "I was correct to have them spread across the world. You see... there is an issue with how they are used. Tell me, what do you think happens when a wish is made on the Dragon Balls?"

"Magic is just a form of energy, and the Dragon Balls are plenty magical. So I'd assume they take some kind of energy to operate. I mean, it's not just Shenron stretching his arms or something after he's done fighting centipedes in the center of the Earth." Krillin, Lapis, Lazuli, and Konkichi stare at you for that comment. You smile cheekily. "But really, it's a law of nature. Opposite and equal reaction-" Then it starts to dawn on you. "...there's something wrong with how this energy is used, isn't there? A drawback?"

Kami lowers his head. "The Dragon Balls draw upon some of the universe's creative, positive energy. Which leads to an equal buildup of destructive, negative energy, contained within the Dragon Balls themselves. Over time, the energy leaves the Dragon Balls and the universe's forces balance out... but only over the course of many, many years. A hundred or more, depending on the buildup. I had designed them to be able to hold a significant amount of this negative energy."

That... that sounds bad. Goku tilts his head. "Couldn't you just wish away the bad energy then?"

"It would result in gaining an amount of negative energy equal to that needed to remove it." Kami states with a sigh. "And a slight increase from merely making a wish."

Goku frowns. "Ah. Dang."

"What's more... this energy is corruptive. If too much is built up, it could alter Shenron in some way that results in him needing to expel that power. This has happened at least once." The time may come when I must what I can to keep this error in my judgment from bringing further harm to the Earth." He hangs his head. "I am deeply sorry."

Something clicks in your mind. "Wait... the Namekian Dragon Balls! Kami, are they at risk too?"

"A good observation." Kami notes. "They are, but not to the degree that the Earth's are. At least, not yet. Moori has already taken precautions."

A relief, at least. Still... damn. "Well... what if there's something Trip could help you with, or maybe some way to vent a little bit of the energy at the time? Instead of one big explosion of it when it overloads."

"Doing so would could create a creature with strength that surpasses even the former Demon King's." Kami states. "At minimum. It'd be comparable to the power of a Majin."

...well, there goes the plan to try training with it. "Guess it was worth a shot."

"We'd need to get plenty stronger before that happens." Goku comments. "But if we do, maybe we can try to prevent it. Though that's probably a ways off."

"Yeah, we already have a lot to worry about." Krillin notes.

"That said, perhaps Miss Sanzo and I could work together to find some temporary solution. I shall investigate that possibility." Kami states, taking to the air. "I thank you all again. Spread the word to those who need to hear it."

After Kami's message, things start to normalize a bit, with you...

As time moves on, you make sure the kids get their training in, and though they do get some decent time in, they start to fall into a routine of it. You prompt them to attempt teaching each other and helping them improve themselves, though that just... kinda leads to them treating it more like a game than trying to learn something from it. Still, they do show improvement, Gohan starting to gain a drive more like his sister's as the girl tries to impress you and Goku.

Your attempt to have them start gaining an education beyond their basic one from the Turtle School training sadly doesn't show the kind of results you'd like, even if they do show some motivation in it, Gohan even more than his sister. But, you hit upon an idea to get them trying harder; someone closer to their age to help them learn. And given how much the two of them like her, you figure Pantea is just about the perfect choice for this.

And to your relief, it does end up working.

The girl's own private lessons help Peppa and Gohan start to learn beyond basic math, writing, and reading. With the motivation, they do seem to learn much quicker than a normal Earthling, Gohan especially, though you're not sure how much of it is natural ability for him, and how much is him trying to impress Pantea.

With the kids' training and learning underway, you put the effort in to get back in the game, and develop some new skills. First, using some of the notes Piccolo added to the book of Magic, you develop a new Lightning Barrier skill of sorts that can catch an opponent off-guard and stun them if they try to get you with a melee attack... though the drawback is that it lacks longevity. It's at best capable of taking one or two blows before it wears off, but that might be just enough to get you the edge you need. Next is working with the skill Trunks and Bra showed you, a quick reactive technique that you can mix in with one of your normal Ki attacks. And lastly, you take the time to enhance the last few Melee combos you know with Lightning. Even if you might not be able to hit as hard, you can potentially do a lot of damage if you can keep an opponent stunned for long enough.

Eventually, after you and Acer help Bulma and the rest of Capsule Corp. start repairs to the Gravity Chamber, with the new design upping the maximum to 300x Earth's Gravity, you're given a surprising visit... by Shao. "Ssssso. Uh. Maple. I've... got a very, very, VERY personal question to ask you." she starts with a nervous gulp, her cheeks reddening as she notices Gohan and Peppa marching with Pantea and Gato.

Oooh, intriguing. "If you ever need help with it, I'm but a call away. Oh! One more thing. I think it might be worth finally taking a deeper look into those Ki containers that King Piccolo had. Might be able to give us an edge if we figure out how they work."

Current weekend plans involve trying to make sure I don't catch the cold my wife just recovered from (Primus knows I've tried my best not to catch it, but it might be inevitable).

Vegeta... tolerates Shao. He doesn't have any romantic inclination towards her. They had some mutual fun and that's about as far as their relationship goes. Shao isn't sure he'd make a good father, given his anger issues.
