>>Information

This quest, as the title suggests, takes place in the world of Dragon Ball. You're playing as a sixteen year old boy named Tofoo, and will adventure through the story of the Dragonball series alongside characters such as Goku, Yamcha, Bulma, Tien, and many others. Through your actions, you can make significant changes to the story, and perhaps even become the strongest fighter on Earth.

>Rules

At the end of each update you'll have ten minutes to vote on options. Write-ins are allowed, but I do reserve the right to veto them.

In the event of a draw, the option to receive the next vote wins

Rolls will be used on certain occasions, such as attempting a technique for the first time or attempting something extremely difficult. You will have three rolls, and if one succeeds, you succeed. There are no crits.

Rolls are made AFTER an option wins, not during the voting process

I hope everyone has fun.

It's been a tough few days, but you've already made some impressive progress under the guidance of Mr. Popo.

You've learned how to relax your mind, to be more in tune with your body. Because of this, you've discovered simple ways you were wasting energy, and with some hard work, were able to correct those mistakes.

Now, you're dashing around the Lookout at your top speed, and unlike a few days ago, you aren't leaving a trail behind for enemies to follow. By keeping your energy in check, you think you may have gained a small increase in speed as well.

If you've improved this much in less than a week, who knows what you can accomplish in three years?

Goku, meanwhile, continues to search for Popo. The blindfold on his face obstructs his sight, and Popo seems to have taken away the option of simply using his ears by tying one bell to himself, and one to a cat, which scurries around the Lookout and constantly rings the bell.

Beyond that, Popo is keeping his energy well hidden, meaning Goku can't just sense for him, either.

With all this, you aren't quite sure how Popo expects Goku to find him.

Stopping your running for the moment, you walk toward Popo and Goku, taking a seat in front of one of Popo's many flowerbeds, and watching them.

Goku wanders pretty aimlessly, attempting to guide himself much like a person in the dark would, by holding his hands out in front of him and feeling around. If the Lookout wasn't so huge, there'd be a serious risk of him falling off.

With Popo concealing his energy, and the cat running around with a bell attached to its tail, you seriously don't understand how Goku is supposed to find Popo.

The dark man intentionally rings his bell on occasion, which adds to Goku's confusion as the cat moves around and does the same.

Wanting to see if you'll fare any better, you close your eyes and attempt to clear your mind, searching for Popo's energy. But, just as you suspected, he's hiding it far too well.

What's more, the constant ringing of the bells from different directions assails your ears, and your mind instinctively tries to figure out where each sound is coming from, interfering with your concentration.

In this case, you have no more hope than Goku does.

Isn't asking just counterproductive to Goku learning, meaning that Popo will just tell us to figure it out ourselves?
>>
>>48660127
oops left that on
>>
>>48660146
No, he wants Goku to understand the concept as well, Goku just runs headlong into everything, generally without thinking it through. So he'll let Goku mess up for a bit, then explain it to him once the kid finally thinks to ask.

Or,if you ask
>>
>>48659959
Not to mention Krillin's basically going to become a king and considering how clever he was in canon, the ox king's village is going prosper from him ruling.

This seems impossible. Between the blindfold, the noise from all directions, and Popo hiding his energy, it doesn't seem like there's any way Goku could possibly succeed here.

You pick yourself off the ground and walk over to Popo, who continues to watch Goku blindly attempt to navigate the Lookout. As you get closer, his eyes shift to look at you, though his head doesn't turn.

"Yes?" he asks.

Goku freezes in his tracks, turning toward Popo's voice and rushing over.

"I've got you now, Mr Popo!" your friend declares as he swiftly closes the gap between the two of them.

At the last moment, Popo steps out of Goku's way, somehow managing not to ring the bell as he does so.

Goku continues running, while Popo looks at you expectantly.

"How's Goku supposed to find you?" you ask.

You recieve no answer beyond a smile from Mr. Popo, who turns, putting his back to Goku.

"Right now, Goku is staying in one spot," Popo tells you. "He's turning his head to his right, now left, now right again."

Your eyes shift to Goku, who is acting just as Mr. Popo describes.

"He's turning around now," Popo continues, and you see that Goku is doing exactly that.

"How are you doing that?" you ask Popo, a few possibilities running through your mind. "Are you sensing his energy?"

Popo doesn't answer, just smiling.

"Are you reading his mind like Korin?" you guess again.

Once more, Popo does not answer.

"Is it something like what Korin said about watching your opponents breathing?" you ask, really wanting to know how he does something like that.

"That's a bit closer to it," Popo answers. "Goku does not do well at concealing his energy, but to sense exactly what he's doing is a bit more difficult. Every movement he makes creates vibrations in the air, and by sensing those vibrations, I can tell what he's doing. I can tell when he's about to strike, or when he's completely calmed. His breathing is a part of that, but only a part."

Popo's way of tracking Goku seems almost too incredible to be true. But, assuming Popo is doing what he says he is, then it's definitely something worth learning.

Deciding to give it a try, you close your eyes and clear your mind, attempting to feel the air all around you. You can feel the breeze quite clearly as you focus on it, and even notice the occasional change in vibration. But, you can't tell what the different vibrations signify.

A few times, you try making guesses, but it ultimately fails as you open your eyes to find Goku something different from what you'd expected.

Eventually, you decide to give up, and look over at Popo.

"So, is there a way to keep people from using this to track me?" you ask.

Popo nods. "If you're better at it than they are, you can anticipate their moves faster than they can anticipate yours. And, if you move fast enough, they won't be able to read your movements in enough time to react."

The only way you're going to succeed at this is by practicing it, so leave Popo and Goku to their training, heading off on your own to a space some distance away, and attempting to read their movements from a distance.

You don't manage to do it on that day, but you believe you've made some progress, and that, given time, you will succeed.

Goku and Popo keep at it for some time, until the two of them seem to get into some kind of argument. Ultimately, Goku says something about Kami, and the two of them disappear inside, with Popo not returning until late in the evening.

Leaving Popo to whatever work he is currently involved in, you go to sleep, determined to overcome this newest challenge the following day.

When you awake, you get to work immediately, tracking down Popo and taking a seat by the entrance to Kami's home, and closing your eyes.

For hours, you remain in that spot, focusing as Popo tends his gardens. At first, your efforts are for naught, as you are frustrated to find yourself incorrectly guessing his movements, like you did with Goku.

But, as it nears noontime, you finally begin to see some serious progress, feeling each movement Popo makes. Soon enough, you can practically see what he's doing in your mind's eye.

You've spent days preparing for this, and learned several new abilities. In your short time on the Lookout, you've learned flaws in your fighting style, and overcame them.

Now, it's time to put your new skills to the test.

Rising from your spot on the ground, you make your way over toward Popo, who hums to himself as he waters his flowers. He doesn't look at you as you approach, but you know he's aware of you.

Coming up right behind Kami's assistant, you stand still and wait for him to acknowledge you.

"Yes? Is there something wrong, Tofoo?" he asks.

Telling him that nothing's wrong, you explain that you want to fight him.

"Is that so?" Popo asks, gingerly setting down his watering can before standing up straight, still keeping his back to you. "Are you sure you're ready?"

You nod.

"Very well," he says, finally turning around, a blank expression on his face. "Let's go somewhere with a bit more space."

Once more, he turns his back to you, silently leading the way as the two of you leave the section of the Lookout covered in flowerbeds.

Arriving in an area with plenty of space, Popo turns to face you, arms folded behind his back as he looks at you with that same blank expression.

"Begin," he instructs.

Accepting Popo's invitation, you make the first move.

Not wasting your time on any fancy tricks, or bothering something he can easily see through such as the Afterimage technique, you instead decide to see how you fare with a head-on approach.

You rush toward Popo as fast as you can, though he doesn't lift a finger to stop you, or make any effort to get out of your way. Then, just before you reach him, you feel his movement. Much like when he first fought you and Goku, he's simply going to hold his fist out and let you run right into the punch.

You duck to the ground, getting into a crouch as he extends his arm. From your current position beneath his arm, you spring from the ground, and amplify your energy for a brief moment, giving yourself an extra bit of strength as you throw a punch.

For the first time, you land a hit on Mr. Popo, your fist slamming into his belly.

Popo looks down at you, letting out a surprised sound, but not seeming particularly hurt. Before you can followup on your attack, he throws a kick, and you quickly spring back, alerted just in time to avoid it.

As you gain some distance and land in a fighting stand, Popo rushes toward you, the blank expression returning to his face as he begins to attack. Able to sense his movements now, you're able to fend off his attacks, parrying punches and catching a few.

However, Popo's speed and power are quite impressive, making it quite difficult for you to fend him off. His energy is now clear enough for you to sense, and you can tell that his power is even greater than your own.

Popo raises his left arm, and attempts to strike the top of your head with his elbow. You duck and spin, getting behind him before throwing a kick at the back of his head.

Just before your hit can land, he vanishes.

An idea comes to you, one that just might help you to flush Popo out of hiding, and give you an edge in this match.

Tapping into the energy within your body, you push it out in all directions, spreading it until it's at every part of your body, trapped inside and struggling to escape.

You begin to tremble, and unless you're hallucinating, you believe that there's some sort of yellow glow appearing around you.

With a yell, you unleash your energy, sending it out in all directions. The power explodes from your body, shooting every which way, and successfully managing to hit Popo with enough force to throw him to the ground.

Before you can capitalize on your momentary advantage, you begin to feel dizzy, and your legs begin to wobble beneath you. Your vision blurs, and goes darker as your legs give out, and you collapse to the ground.

Your eyes open again sometime later, and you find yourself staring up at a ceiling. Presumably, that means that you're inside of Kami's home somewhere.

You sit up, and look around the room. There are a few other beds, only one of which is occupied.

Goku does not look too good. His body has some serious scorch-marks, and he's out cold. Either he took a seriously powerful energy attack full-blast, or he got shocked something fierce.

You pull yourself out of bed and take a moment to figure out what happened. Your attack worked, but you passed out right after using it. The simplest explanation seems to be that you've used too much energy.

You go left, following the long hallway down to the very end.

Dozens of doors line the hallway, and you find yourself wondering what could be in them. You suppose one must be Popo's room, and Kami must sleep somewhere, and that there's probably a kitchen and restroom, but what about all the others? Maybe there's some training rooms? Or a room where Kami watches the world?

Lost in thought, you don't even realize you've come to the end of the hallway until you walk head-first into the door at the very end.

Rubbing your head, you take a step back, looking at it.

"Good, you're awake."

Turning around, you find Kami standing in the middle of the hallway, looking at you with a small smile on his face.

"I've been observing your training," he informs you. "You're progressing quite well. Better than I'd hoped, as a matter of fact. It seems I had little to worry about, giving you a few hours to say goodbye to your friends."

"Really? That's surprising," you tell him. "I thought you'd be mad."

"No, and I apologize for how our previous conversation went," he tells you. "But you must understand that this is very important. Piccolo must be stopped once and for all, and despite your impressive work against his previous incarnation, this one will be far more deadly."

He stops himself, taking a deep breath. "But, after observing your training, I can tell that both you and Goku will give this your best effort."

"What happened to Goku?" you ask, recalling your friend in the bed.

"He requested to face the same sort of training I did," Kami explains. "As you can see, it was quite a taxing experience. Mr. Popo and I had hoped he would learn to detect movement. It seems he's well on track. We agreed that you would not need that training, as you seemed to grasp the concept, and needed only to practice at it."

So, you've outperformed Goku so far. You wonder if you can make that last. If nothing else, Kami seems to hold a more favorable opinion of you now than he did previously, so that's a good thing.

"Speaking of training, is there somewhere on the Lookout where I can do that without having to worry about damaging anything?" you ask.

"There are several rooms designed for different methods of training," Kami confirms. "The one you walked into, for instance, is very special. If you like, I could show it to you."

Eh. Single mother syndrome is more of a statistic and a tragedy.
Plus the mom is indirectly screwing herself, since an unhappy son produces less grandchildren for her.
Yes the son is innocent, but when it comes to genetics, the sins of the mother are a real thing.

You know, it occurs to me reading through this quest that a Young Master Roshi would probably make a more interesting protagonist for the series then Goku would.
This is totally forgivable of course as Toriyama didn't really plan much of the series out ahead of time and changed a lot based on the desires and responses of his fans, with stuff like the Cell Saga especially.
>>
>>48662482
Still pushing for that Tofoo x Fortuneteller Baba pairing for superior magic-capable children
That way our son (or daughter) can fuck the Goku x Bulma daughter (or son) to produce a grandchild with Protagonist, Fortuneteller, Saiyan, and Genius genetics.
>>
>>48662715
There we go.
See, I used to feel upset about this, but now I just sort of shrug internally.
>>
>>48662716
Toriyama is such a hack that he's inspired every popular mangaka since to be a hack.

>>
>>48662716
The 1st arc was based heavily on Journey to the West, with Goku as Son wukong, Bulma as Xuenshang, and Oolong as Zhu bajie.

Journey to the West has Xuenshang as the main character, if any even count as the main.

However, fans liked Goku, and so protagonist a go go.
>>
>>48662801
I would support this if it were over something fun. But peeing on Bora and Upa would just be in poor taste.
>>
>>48662757
I pretend to shrug at things like this but really I'm screaming internally.

As I've aged I've found the amount of time I spend screaming internally has skyrocketed.
>>
>>48662790
"Hack" is a really strong word.
I think he was very sensitive to what his audience wanted at any moment (he managed to change the types of stories he told admirably with what was popular at the time) and was good at giving it to them, which is actually quite a talent.
However, it's pretty clear from his style of writing that he'd not really expected Dragonball to become so length or so serious and he really DOES seem to vastly prefer action comedies.

It's kind of a case of the fandom really over-attaching to one thing he added and him giving it to them because mangaka kind of don't have a retirement plan.
>>
>>48662814
Aren't there four protagonists in Journey to the West? Is Yamcha the last one?
>>
>>48662841
He's a hack for other reasons, anon. At least Kubo, Kishi, and Oda (to the best of my knowledge) don't flat out forget entire characters, concepts, and plots.
>>
>>48662812
When you think about it, when he first began writing Dragonball and when he ended it his entire fandom could literally have grown from late childhood to adulthood on his manga.

That explains a lot about his longevity.
>>
>>48662802
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I moved out at 15.

Being homeless was awesome, at least compared to living at home.

Then when I started renting a shitty shack on a floodplain, it was even more awesome compared to being homeless.

I thought it would suck, but actually it's pretty damn good and I like it a lot.

While I was living with my mom, I was aggressive and upset all the time. But then I moved out and now I'm calm and happy most of the time.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>>48662877
To be fair, I started Naruto when I was like 14 and I'm 28.

Naruto was a thing for almost half my life
>>
>>48662865
That's more of his preferred method of writing being not very serious again; much like Simpsons, you weren't really supposed to pay serious attention to shit that happened in previous issues because it wasn't supposed to be serious.
But yeah, later on in the 80's manly martial arts fighting manga got way more popular (thank Fist of the North Star for that) and so he did some of that too, even aging up his main character to keep up with the times.
His biggest "hack" thing is actually his tendency to reuse similar or identical storylines because he doesn't seem know how to write action series very well when it comes right down to it.
>>
>>48662917
It's kind of sad that the Boruto manga is such an abortion.
Will /tg/ be getting a new Naruto Quest? Find out next time, on Dragon Ball Z!

>>48662684
"That sounds great," you tell him. "Thanks."

Kami offers another quick smile before walking past you and opening the door. He steps inside and holds it for you as you enter.

It is, by far, the strangest room you have ever seen. It's round in shape, and not particularly large, with no windows, no other doors, and no features really worth noting.

Oh, except for the clocks.

They're everywhere; the walls, the ceiling, the floor, clocks of every shape and size. They look as if they're painted on, but you can hear them ticking, and swear you can see the hands on some of them moving around.

Kami chuckles at your confused expression, and you wonder how often the Guardian is amused.

"Yes, this room is quite strange," Kami tells you, as if reading your thoughts. "But, it's also quite powerful. As you may have gathered from the clocks, this room has great significance in relation to time. Here, you can be sent to any time and place in the past."

"Hmm...I'm sure I can think of something," Kami answers, eyeing you for a moment before pointing his right finger at you.

A beam of white light shoots from his fingertip, and you find yourself surrounded by a glow of the same color. What's left of your uniform vanishes, replaced by a strange cross between armor and a toga. Kami also seems to have given you gloves, and even a sword.

"There you are," Kami says. "Similar to how warriors dressed back in that time."

An unpleasant thought comes to you, giving you pause about this whole thing. "What if I create a timeline where something bad happens?"

Kami gives you a gentle look. "There are an infinite number of timelines, Tofoo, and many of them have less-than-happy endings for many people. All I would say, is do your best, and protect the people of the past as you would those from the present."

The room grows dark, the ticking of the clocks growing louder as Kami disappears from sight. Everything becomes pitch black, until a glowing green circle appears just a few feet away from you.

You guess that's your door to the past. There's no sign of Kami, or anyone else, and the ticking of the clocks is beginning to give you a headache.

Kami had said the world was a very different place back then from how it is now. He says there were monsters, and demons, and based on your outfit, people were a little odd.

This could be a really strange journey, and you try to mentally prepare yourself for things to be different.

With a deep breath, you step forward into the circle.

The circle hums beneath you, and the clocks grow even louder before the light surrounding you rises, engulfing you completely and forcing you to shield your eyes.

You feel like you're on an incredible intense airship ride, seemingly twisting and turning in many ways over a span of a few seconds.

The ground beneath you vanishes, and next thing you know, you're falling from the sky, and hitting the ground hard.

Power Levels wasn't even really supposed to be an accurate reading of anything anyway according to Toriyama, which is shown relatively early on.
Think about it; just wearing heavy clothing causes it to drop. That means if you bring in a heavy load of groceries your Power Level changes.
That makes it about the shittiest calculator of battle strength that has ever been created, especially when you consider how advanced their technology seems to be.
Even in the FIRST FIGHT with Raditz the various techniques they used caused their Sento Powa to jump all over the place despite things like Kamehameha (which causes Goku's power level to more then triple when he first uses it on Raditz) being the simplest fucking thing in terms of techniques in the series to the point where damn near half the full cast can do it.

Fan's obsession with it is mostly something Toriyama didn't intend (Daizenzhuu had a lot to do with it I think), which is why it's ALWAYS shown to be hugely unreliable and difficult to really gauge at all.
It was also kind of showing the nature of Frieza's army and their beliefs that you're just BORN with superior strength like Frieza was as well as all of his minions, rather then using training over time to get to that point. Even Vegeta seemed to think early on the ONLY really effective way for him to raise his power was to get nearly killed and then heal and get that immediate power boost; it was only until Frieza killed him and be made the full transition to antihero that he actually started taking shit like training to improve himself seriously.

It's about as retarded as everything else in the series, yes.

You know the ENTIRE storyline with Cell was created purely out of fan response to them not liking the Androids as villains?
That's literally the only reason Cell's around. The Androids were going to be the arc villains until fans decided they didn't like bishounen guy and blonde girl and so he changed stuff to make a villain that was basically combination Piccolo Daimaio and Frieza in terms of modus operandi and personality.

What are your thoughts on ki sonar?

Black Nimbus is glad someone's riding it

Popo thinks you're a pretty impressive young man

Kami thinks he may have misjudged you, and that you just might be the person he's looking for

To Goku, you're still one of his best friends and rivals, and he really wants to see how far training can push you both.

>>48663843
Roshi is a bit jealous that you get to train with Kami, and thinking about how far you and Goku have come so fast makes him queasy

Bulma wishes you hadn't gone, and she misses you

Krillin can't wait to see you again, and is determined to keep up with you and Goku

Yamcha's furious that the gap between you is continuing to widen, so he's going to train his hardest to catch up

Chaozu is glad you stopped King Piccolo, and hopes to see you fight Tenshinhan in the next Tournament

Tenshinhan has been inspired to train harder by you and Goku, and plans to defeat you both next Tournament

Chichi thinks you're alright, and is grateful to you for avenging Krillin

Puar likes you

Oolong sees you as a good friend

Lapis and Lazuli wish you'd have stopped by and visited, as they kind of wanted to hear from you about the battle with King Piccolo

I did want to stop and say hi at least. Is there any way we can send a message to them, and Bulma's parents, at some point.
>>
>>48663963
Possibly
>>
>>48663881
Depends on how you look at it.
In one sense he's a memorable villain voiced by Norio Wakamoto, always awesome.
In another sense he just kind of reinforced Toriyama's willingness to bend to the desires of his fandom and never try anything new; his goals and arc was literally just Piccolo (starts wanting to reach a more powerful form, in this case Perfect Cell over Old Daimaio, crashes a newstation and announces to the world that he's in charge, starts a new Tenkaichi Budokai like Jr did) crossed with Frieza (arrogant dickbag with a very alien body form compared to others who kept showing how much more powerful he is by changing his shape) two very popular arcs for his writing, which sort of continued to encourage him to not every try anything new with the series because when he did they just whined and he immediately backpedaled for them.

And then there's the new series where one of the villains is literally just Frieza in a new form, again, and you see where that kind of shit has led over the years.
>>
>>48663963
We could destroy a portion of the landscape in the past to write a message in it so that some version of them has a message from us.

She is, definitely.
Maron wins more points on the physical attributes, but Bulma is both more humorous and ages pretty well considering she's like, well into her late twenties and early thirties or something by the time the Frieza Saga ends and Trunks shows up.

Most women in Japanese shit turn into prune-people when they hit thirty.
She probably gets it from her mom, who is perpetually stuck at age 19 both physically and mentally apparently.

You could just say "a Dragonball franchise character", adding "jobber" is an oxymoron since everyone does it at least once in the series.

>>
>>48664306
So whats everyone's opinion on Tofoo if they found out he's this strong from him having no teacher and fucking off to the woods and wilderness for training.

Yeah he had help from Bulma and got some advice from Korin and Popo and some help from the Ultra Divine water, but I mean the very fact that he learned all this stuff from just being curious and trying new things out to see how further he could take his techniques and learn new ones, especially during fights.
>>
>>48664261
>Also because weapons are useless in DB after King Piccolo.
Again, weapons are useless because Goku doesn't use them so nobody else does either.
Trunks one-shots Frieza with his sword, so it's pretty clear that weapons aren't remotely "useless" since it's fairly well established that Frieza was kind of a lot more powerful.
But what Goku does is what everyone does in the series.

He uses only his fists later, so everyone else does.
He has a kickass "signature attack", so everyone else eventually gets one even if they mostly prove about as useful as tits on a bull.
When it's plot-critical he gets cool new transformations, so everyone else gets new transformations, and so on.

Shit, everyone who can even fucking copies his training methods and teacher after he does it right up until Cell happens and basically everyone just stops putting up even the pretense at ever being able to catch up to Goku.

>What the fuck happened to Hinata?
I don't watch Naruto, but I know the answer to this easily enough; the Christmas Cake thing basically fell into disuse as men kinda had to settle for older women as time went on because younger people aren't even being BORN anymore and because people are having sex less and less and thus later and later in life are they getting married.
Thus modern Japanese media women are much more likely to be portrayed as physically attractive and it not being unusual anymore.

In fact, usually they tend to be more physically mature as fat tits and fat ass gradually became the more popular fetishized body type over there and thus older women with more "developed" bodies tend to have them while younger chicks tend to be more petite to please both groups of the sadsack virg....uh, "otaku crowd" in Japan, I meant to say.

>>48664408
Yajirobe was somehow Goku's physical equal during the initial parts of of the King Piccolo Saga, so when you think about it it's not all that surprising.
Tofoo just actually bothers to train, while Yajirobe just eats more and gets fatter.

I guess Yajirobe is some kind of fucking genius at training or something because according to the author he was more or less on par with everyone else after training at Kami's lookout for a year to fight Vegeta and Nappa despite actually spending WAY less time overall training period.

Guy could probably be a badass if he wasn't such a lazy fatass all the time.

Mark Hamill IS the objectively superior villain voice actor, but also it's just that Korra's writing was kinda here and there at times.
