Welcome back, everyone, to the forty-sixth installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest. I'm Wong, your host, and you are the Countess' dirty peasant boy...er, Roarke Starwind, space pirate and Admiral of the Iron Kestrels.

Last time, you won a duel. It was close, but you put your all into it and managed to pull it off without getting killed or defeated. You were even intact enough for the Knuckle Kaiser to princess-carry the headless, armless, thoroughly battered Anseis, one of the Twelve Paladins of Avalon, back into its bay.

Sometimes, you have a little trouble taking Avalon and its people seriously. Just looking around with your cameras reveals that even the mechanics wear crisp blue-and-gold livery more ornate than even the UJCIDF's uniforms. Granted, they're still wearing coveralls, but they have on tabards with the Countess' sigil over them.

And he said he isn't smart. For being in the far future he knows a lot of history it seems.

So I've been rereading our pirate fleet and I had a question: Is there any particular reason we have paired heavy batteries? Since we can turn 180 degrees in a single turn anyway, a single forward mounted superheavy battery would both cost less space and increase our damage. I took the liberty of making two alternate designs so you can tell me how terrible I am.

Two points really; 1, two guns means 2 rolls and the dice are not to be trusted. 2; this offers us a 360 degree protection with the ability to hit twice anything right in front or right behind us. Repositioning is a pain and blind spots are a bad idea in general. This is a good mix of offense and defense and while the range isn't like one big gun, diversity is more usefully for a primary ship.

"Right here, Monsieur Starwind. Oui, this one." Countess Loriette Marie le Kennedy even has a special rack for her mech, larger and more ornate than the others, with golden prongs to hold the Anseis in place. The Anseis towers over the smaller Avalonian mecha surrounding it, but not so much as the Kaiser does over the Bluegills and Harpies you're used to seeing it next to. It's a strange optical illusion that makes the Anseis seem smaller than your mech by comparison, even though realistically you know the Paladin is bigger and heavier than the Knuckle Kaiser. "...And you shall be next to me. Right here, mon duckling." The Anseis points with its foot before you maneuver it upright and into the rack.

There's rather a large crowd of Avalonians gathering, and even from up here, you don't like the way they're looking at you. You hesitate, almost, before popping the hatch, and as you ride the liftwire down you feel uncomfortably like bait being lured into dark water on the end of a hook.

...which lasts until the Countess' feet touch the bay floor, and she begins barking at them, "Jacques! A squad of Knights to retrieve my Strider's missing pieces, toot sweet! Astonaige, inform the kitchens I will be having the lobster this evening. The Admiral and I shall be discussing the terms of my surrender, do not disturb me for anything."

"But my lady, what if there is an emergency?" One of the servants protests.

"Not for anything! Already, we are in the state of emergency, if something worse should happen ze pirate king will know long before we do." She pats your shoulder, hooking her arm around yours and dragging you off down an opulent corridor that wouldn't look out of place in a palace on Europa.

"I am sure you must be replete with questions, duckling. Other solar aborigines we have encountered and given the interrogation, they knew not a thing of Avalon or the Lady of the Woods. It is most sad, no?"

Again, we can turn 180 degrees making arc of fire irrelevant as a practical matter.
>>48610418
Still 500k vs 400k and the light multimissle battery takes care of most of the blindspot anyway.
>>
>>48610436
>Again, we can turn 180 degrees making arc of fire irrelevant as a practical matter.

>unless they knock out the engine

>Still 500k vs 400k and the light multimissle battery takes care of most of the blindspot anyway.

>500k if you hit

pls. I commend your effort, and you aren't wrong, but it is not a significant improvement.
>>
>>48610436

You would have to move a fair distance forward to turn, however, it doesn't let you simply pivot.
>>
>>48610436
yes, except you forget that missiles are limited and even if you hit, it does not mean your entire volley will. Oda's crazy salvo of 10 hits requires him to pump in a ridiculous 10 luck to work and still beat Galbladder's roll.

If that 1 500 misses, we do no damage. If one of our cannons miss, we can still do 200.
>>
>>48610468
>pls. I commend your effort, and you aren't wrong, but it is not a significant improvement.
There are advantages to having a single dice roll, mainly in that you can spend your luck offensively to greater effect. And I don't deny it has weaknesses, though I honestly consider that a good thing. Weaknesses that would require us to use maneuver and tactics instead of just sitting in our optimum fire range and blasting away like we usually do. Our combat setup is so boring.
>>
>>48610514
>If that 1 500 misses, we do no damage. If one of our cannons miss, we can still do 200.
The math is still fundamentally in favor of the single superheavy though.
>>
>>48610468
Reread the archives. When the Rhinehawk was upgraded, we were given two choices, either change it to a Jovian layout with a superheavy battery in front or keep the Martian layout with option to further increase it.
>>
I wonder who Dozel left to babysit Athena since he came with us?
>>
>>48610592
Which thread was that?
>>
>>48610592
Uh, yeah. I wasn't calling that into question. Between our current layout and that one isn't a significant improvement. Since they were both direct upgrades at the time and were comparable.
>>
>>48610592
To be fair, we didn't have anywhere near the maneuverability when we made that choice, and the increase in maneuverability significantly changes that decision.
>>
>>48610557
Only in a straight situation and only against a even foe. It does not count for wasted damage, like say.. having to destroy several smaller ships. For the most part, our battles have done well against better foes because of surprise and taking out secondary enemies like the cruiser and drills to limit our enemy's chance of hitting us with good rolls.

Those numbers likely don't count the chance of criticals, which can turn the tide immensely as we have seen. A single 10 on the crit chart gives a ship a 50% chance of catching a case of the explosions.

Another thing to consider; we will not always have the tactical advantage. A sturdy design with contingencies and full cover help us a lot more if we are stuck or surrounded.
>>
>>48610532
Well, duh. The Rhinehawk isn't a main battleship like the Wels-class, it's a light mech carrier that packs enough firepower to annihilate a cruiser, but not a battleship.
>>
I also had another design, but I'm pretty sure that Wong would shoot me If I proposed making a superlight with a Deluxe CWIS, with the plan of ramming it through a 200+ mech melee and horrifically abusing the fact that it gets a free shot at any enemy mech than enters its range.
>>
>>48610710
Its actually is in the same weight class as a Wels class.

Meanwhile, back on the Rhinehawk...

"I don't like her. Not one little bit." Rosita crosses her arms under her bosom, "A mech with a skirt is MY aesthetic, and she's trying to out-princess me. Nobody out-princesses Red Siren."

"For once, you're right. Did you hear her? 'How dare you make me unleash ze full power of mon Paladin', 'le bucket of ze rusty bolts, honhonhon'. She insulted the Kaiser!" Karen huffs, doing the same.

"I really don't like some of the jokes she made about the UJCIDF. Even if some of the upper brass are playing dirty, we aren't the ones worshipping Green Men." Samantha remarks, gazing with muted dislike at the damaged Avalonian ship.

"She's an enemy of the whole Solar System." Clemmy agrees, returning from her bunkroom. Her face is flushed and she's panting a little, shifting around as if her flight suit is uncomfortable, "She thinks of us all as a bunch of silly little peasants, and Roarke as a silly peasant with some muscle. She'll steal him and double-cross us at the very first opportunity. Unless..." The former Lieutenant's gaze shifts to the comms. She strides over, as graceful as a cat, and puts in a call to the Rhinehawk, "Hey ho little cake-eater, are you there?"

"If Roarke could bake like Maya you'd have trouble with your weight too." Avi grumbles over the line, "What's up?"

"...You uploaded the footage of that fight to the holonet yet? You've uploaded them all so far, and you do a good job, really! I'm just wondering how long it takes you." Clemmy's voice is sweet and utterly free of violence for the moment.

"Well, actually I like to re-dub the music in for a more high-def sound experience. You don't always get that perfect quality just from what you hear over the Admiral's comms. I was working on that now." Avi replies, uncertainly, "...Can't you just wait until he gets back if you're going to do something obscene?"

>>
>>48610718
Thats one of the cheesiest ideas we've had in this quest have Karen build two of them
>>
>>48610756
>Clemmy blackmail

Nice.
>>
>>48610756
Run Avi! Run before she does to you what that one chick in Iron Blooded Orphans did to Biscuit!
>>
What's really great about Avi uploading everything is that everyone sees all these mecha with special capabilities and advanced gear

and Roarke is punching them to death without any other real gimmicks.

That'll change once we get our fistibits but still. Damn son.
>>
>>48610834
Just imagine how many other aces are watching these and trying to find the Kaiser's hidden weakness
>>
>>48610760
That's not even the most abusive thing I've learned. Did you know that Point Defense can apparently shoot down missiles?
>>
>>48610688

That increase in maneuverability was a last-minute patch that I've had some cause to regret. I might nerf it, you haven't actually fought in it yet.

One thing about this system, and I realize it's a huge cop-out to say, is that it isn't balanced and really shouldn't be. A lot is on the GM's shoulders as far as what is and isn't allowed. This is the kind of game I would never, ever play with an optimizer allowed to design their own mech, because so many options are flat-out better than others that the only way to stay sane is for the GM to decide what is and isn't kosher. Consequently, there are frequently "better" setups for mecha and starships that I straight up ignore.

For example, you've all noticed Paladin guy's obsession with Verniers, because Verniers are really, really good. You've all also noticed that when I get a design like that I accept it with changes and then strip out most of the Verniers so that its base tonnage actually matters.

>>48610756

And here I made another mistake, that should be "back on Yum-5", I'm too used to everyone being on the flagship.
>>
>>48610834
And we just scored enough points to get our mid season upgrade. More punch! An Active shield! Stuff I can't remember! The chance to get better things!

>>48610849
"I know, let's use a sniper and never face him up close!"
one fight later
"IT ONLY MADE HIM ANGRIER! ABORT! ABORT!"
>>
>>48610731
I stand corrected then. It was before Red upgraded the entire Rhinehawk to a heavier ship-class and it's not like we don't have the option to get Superheavy batteries.
>>
What will we call the fist bits? Apparently "Fist cloak" is "Faust mantel" in german, which stays in line with the "Kaiser".
>>
>>48610876
>A bunch of aces have the same idea and come to our tourney with a sniper build
>They don't know we just got a massive upgrade
>Roarke kicks the shit out of them with his bits
>Good times had by all

>>48610935
I still the Polaris system would be a cool name
>>
>>48610867
I may be a tad behind, but what's up with planets beside Venus, Earth, Mars, and Jupiter. Why isn't Saturn a power like Jupiter? It has plenty of nice moons.
>>
>>48610867
Pretty much.Early on, a lot of options for the modifiers are actually pretty good. Engines, verniers and the like are viable. Once you get to 200 cp base machine, those options start to fall off. Which sucks because there are some neat things.

>>48610935
Why not a coat of arms?
>>
>>48610935
Faust Mantel, with the Polaris O.S.
>>
What do people think about selling some of the avalonian mechs to various interested parties in Sol? I wonder if we could get some Thoroughbred MPs from that one company for our noncore aces. The people stuck with stuff like master harpies and Pumpkinseed twos.

"Nope! Can't make any promises, today, sorry! It's just...nfff...the way he took that thing apart. All the sparks, seeing him rip apart those fancy weapons with just...just his fists and...an-and hold it together, Alice, you're better than this..." She takes a deep breath, "Just send me the footage. I know someone who needs to see this. Immediately." She grins cheerfully, and hangs up.

Five eyes stare suspiciously at her, she looks innocently back at them, "What are you all looking at me like that for? I'm not doing anything weird, I'm just solving two problems at once. I'm gonna make my darling husband some money...and make him a hero...and I'm gonna make sure the Countess gets what she deserves." She grins cutely.

The other girls consider. Samantha and Red Siren both look as though there's something they want to say, but can't quite articulate it.

Karen just smiles, "Wonderful. I have some expensive repairs to make. Alice, I'm proud of you, you're really starting to think like a pirate!"

Clemmy laughs, "Call me Clemmy. We're friends now, right? Besides, I'm not really thinking like a pirate, this time..." Her smile acquires a rather unpleasant edge, "No, quite the opposite." Her PC bwoops, and she checks to make sure that's the right file Avi just sent her. Whistling cutely, she patches into Auditorium's ansible system, and forwards the file to another one of the names on her contact list, "Yay~ Everyone will be so happy~" She hugs herself gleefully.

Karen nods, adjusting her glasses, "Actually, Clemmy...since we're friends now, I have a secondary proposition for you. How's the Flowerhorn flying?" A villainous light gleams off the lenses of her spectacles as she whispers her plan into the Butcher's ear. The two girls share a hearty laugh.

[Continued, back with you. Any questions you have for her, please share, additional options are always a great thing for me to include!]

Jupiter became the capital of the Solar System after it spearheaded the victory against the Green Men. Neptune and Uranus are mining colonies for Helium-3.
>>
>>48611138
We do have that old speech for the duke that didn't get used that you liked a lot. Lemme dig it up:
"One man's hero is another man's monster I fear. While your Lady in the Woods seems to embody the best of what we knew as the Green Men, at their worst they were monstrous. I will not claim to know which side is correct, but be cautious of that certainty sir knight. The worst acts of humanity were committed by those that KNEW they were in the right."
>>
>>48611138
Subtly bring up augmentations and see how she reacts and if she has any
>>
>>48611189
Use it only when she brings up converting to worshipping the Lady.

Also, ask about the War between the SSL and Avalon.
>>
>>48611208
Also ask her about her life, where she grew up, hobbies, stuff like that
>>
>>48611138
Well, asking her what she was told by other people from the solar system might be good to figure out her views. While she likely heard about our hate of the green men, she may not have been given a clear reason why or why we stick to 'primative' weaponry.

Gassing colonies, using people as nothing more than cpus for their machines, straight up mind control.. and the fact that those who actually saw the war were so traumatized that weeds were something that freaked them out.

She might be a good one, but the whole 'crying for her people' but not for those who suffered in the war as whole really does not help people.
>>
>>48611138
Maybe bring up the fact that that bucket of bolts she disparaged is a heavily modified mech with Thoroughbred MP and a few parts from the original Thoroughbred X. The man may be dead, but the design team didn't die with him after all.
>>
>>48611310
Yeah, one of the reasons I like the other speech is that it doesn't claim that she's evil or even wrong. It implies things to get her thinking, and once she's thinking rather than just reflexively worshiping the green lady we can make progress. Just straight up telling her that the green lady is probably an evil bitch would backfire horribly.
>>
>>48611138
Is there some inspiration for Avalon from that mod for CKII set in space?
>>
>>48611378
pretty much. This entire thing is culture shock and they don't understand why their efforts at spreading her love are being met with disdain because no one is willing to sit down and explain things to them.

The Countess shivers as if she just felt a cold wind on the back of her neck.

As for you, you're staring around in awe. The room where Eustace entertained you and Samantha was very highbrow by starship standards, but you're beginning to realize his tastes were spartan for an Avalonian noble. This is better than a luxury hotel. The blue and gold coloration is here, too, but even more obvious, with hanging tapestries and paintings and rooms clearly intended for large gatherings of partygoers. You feel strangely diminished by the size and emptiness of the sitting room you're in, with its clusters of couches and the huge portrait of the Countess in classical armor and holding a lance, with a beatific smile on her face and a halo of light behind her head.

"Owwchee, I must have twisted mon ankle and not realized. Rowarc~ Could you be most dear and massage it for moi~?" She extends her foot invitingly as she slumps back on the couch, her skirt slipping up a little. Her skin is pale, but those legs are very toned. She catches you looking, and hides her grin behind her gloved hand.

Caught, you have no choice but to accept, rubbing her foot as she leans back on the end of the couch with her arms behind her head, "Oui, perfection~ Now, why must a man like you be trapped in the solar system and hounded by the dogs of Jove? You are someone zat could be a hero, non? To hear you are called the criminal most common, it tears at me. I am insulted by its very implications, as one who has lost to your...your..."

You help her out, "Knuckle Kaiser."

"Pfwah! What kind of name is that?" She laughs.

You frown, mildly hurt, "It's a good name."

"Of course it is, mon petit duckling, of course it is." She assures you. "Tres cute, ohoho. Are there many Kaiser Knuckles in the solar system? It is, shall we say, much like a Strider of dark renown from our history, piloted by a knight of no honor."

[Continued]
>>
Does the Knuckle Kaiser's mid season upgrade form get a new name? We could always go with the classic and call it the Knuckle Kaiser X or XX. Would be a nice reference that the Avalonians would likely instantly get.
When do we reach the tier where Mooks scream "Its the Kaiser!" before getting punched and exploding?

Pretty sure we're already at that tier.

Undefeated too I might add.

If we're not on that tier already with the Knuckle Kaiser as a mech we sure as hell are there as a pilot and pirate.

I hope so. Because if we get command armor, I have an idea of using the head armor's thrusters and verniers as a mane of hair and a pair of thruster horns.
>>
>>48611597

You're now at 9 Mecha Piloting/Fighting, meaning you've reached that level of renown where everyone has heard of you, and even prior to that you were exceptional enough to have an official UJCIDF designation, "Black Ogre".

In other words, you're very close to hearing it rather a lot, and the only reason you didn't hear it on Mars was because you were sitting in the Kaiser and then beating up Rashad. Poor General Fairchild, though, had to sit through "Look, it's the Black Ogre!" "Black Ogre!?" "By Allah, it's the Black Ogre!" "That's the Black Ogre, the demon mech that destroyed the Scarlet Talons in a heartbeat and stole Lady Fatima!" "Kyaa, Roarke Starwind~" "BLACK OGRE!?" The entire time you were posing. It was very frustrating for her and she didn't enjoy it.

"It should. Floyd Beck, right? The Duke mentioned it to me. His mech, Thoroughbred-X, was so successful that the design was simplified for mass-production during the War. Except that all of the original pilots met disastrous ends, and they got a reputation for being cursed."

"A cursed Strider!?" She listens wide-eyed, seeming to actually believe the talk of curses, "Then you need a new one!"

"It saved my life, so have some respect. I was shot down and given up for dead. My mech was on the verge of exploding from a destabilized reactor core when I found the Kaiser in a crater, since then it's been good to me." You can't help sounding just a little defensive. Nobody has the right to criticize your mech after you've beaten them.

"Oui, I see your point. The familiar sword fits better in the hand, non?" She winks, "Perhaps the curse was reversed, since you had escaped death with it right away. I could believe it is cursed, after the butchery Sir Beck inflicted with its predecessor. No matter. I will vouch for you, and the Duke will vouch for you. The Queen will surely make you a noble, that will undo the harm caused by my insult of proposing to make you a squire. You are worthy of it." Oddly, there's a note of sadness in her voice.

"As are you. You put up an amazing amount of fight." You smile sincerely at her.

She blushes slightly, "But I lost!"

You shrug, "I recently fought an entire ship full of UJCIDF mecha, including five prototypes. You did more damage to the Kaiser than they did."

Her cheeks color further, "But...but I lost..." She bites her lip, then pulls her leg back and blurts out, "You compliment me much too quickly, monsieur! I already know about pirates, and I am sure your intentions are not entirely pure...although, if you knew what that shapely leg you ogle so looked like before I was made pilot of the Anseis, perhaps you would not be so quick to touch it." She pulls her legs under her body, sitting up, "I was not worthy. Not before receiving the augmentations of a noble. I was born a cripple, with the...the twisted legs and clubbed feet. I never ran, never danced, until the Lady lifted me up and the Queen placed her sword upon my shoulder. The first time I took a step was in my Anseis." She smiles. There's a trace of bitterness, but the memory is so clearly a happy one that it's only a trace, "I may despise the family of the Duke, but we are both alike in that we were nothing before we were elevated to the nobility. The Duke, he was a son illegitimate, raised on the farm by his mother. Me, I was a deformed younger daughter who was not expected to inherit, or even to marry, or live a full life. Neither of us would have received the genetic superiority of a noble without this new dynasty. Imagine how strong you could become with such a blessing, you who is already strong, and who dances so well." She reaches over and ruffles your orange hair.

Outside the viewport, you see one of the lance-bearing, smaller Avalonian mecha from earlier. It's not very fast, they look more like ground models than proper space mecha, and it's having a hard time as it fumbles for the Anseis' floating head.

Not many, and few had the same kind of direct choices involved.

You could have fought the S-Slayer early.

You could also have theoretically fought Caesar, Pierre, and Colonel Stern at one point.

You could have chosen to pursue Jesus when rescuing Clemmy.

None of these are necessarily good ideas, and the Anseis is really the first secret boss of its type.

"There are...ways you could join the nobility formally, as well. Distinguished behavior in battle, perhaps you will be granted a colony or planet for that, likely a nicer one than this. Oh, and there is always marriage, oui. That might be a good way for you to...establish yourself." Her grip relaxes slightly on your arm. Her eyes are very golden, and very bright.

It would be wrong to let her convince herself you're going to become an Avalonian noble, so you pull back a little, "It's not all genetics, my mech has been heavily modified and customized to my exact specifications and fighting style."

"Non, I will not be distracted! Rowarc, forget this silly game, come back to Avalon with me!" Her face assumes an expression of implacable, well-bred entitlement. Even a crippled princess is still likely treated as a princess, you wonder if she's ever really been denied anything, "Paying a ransom, it is no object, but I want you to come with me!" She grabs ahold of your arm, "I know your people fought against the Lady, and I know you ride the Strider built in the image of Sir Floyd Beck...but you are your own man! The authorities of this system, they despise you! They would put you in gaol or hang you if they could catch you! The Lady is good, she is kind, she is holy and genetically perfect and wise beyond what normal humans can understand! If you just met her, you would know."

"One person's hero is another person's monster." You sigh, but don't dislodge her hand yet, "I can't say your Lady doesn't seem to embody the best of what we knew as the Green Men, at their worst they did terrible things. I can't claim to know which side is correct, only what I've seen left in the people who fought in the War, but you should beware ever being so cautious of your certainty. Humanity's worst acts always seem to be committed by those that were sure they were in the right." You say solemnly, gently, "I can't commit to something like that."

The Avalonian mech's fingertips finally brush against the Anseis' brow, sending the head into a spin. Although they're clearly more like jumpjets, its thrusters flare, and it finally catches the severed head servo.

Just as it does, the S-Flowerhorn hits it going full speed, both legs extended, and kicks it away from the ship. It deftly snags the Anseis' helmed head, the smile-shaped white sensor mask on the SOUL mech seeming to glow brighter as it rears back in a triumphant pose. Each of the magnetic harppons built into its forearms is wrapped securely around a pair of the Anseis' downed drills. The mech tilts its head, in a motion oddly reminiscent of Clemmy, towards the ship, casually flipping one of its beam sabers around its fingers as though in contemplation as it gazes at the hull. Then it visibly shrugs, firing its thrusters up. The gold and black mech soars away into space, towards your ships, before the Avalonian mech can even retake control of its hurtling flight.

Yeah, the war was a damn mess. While Zeon was strapped for resources and pilots, the EF was having a power problem in terms of individual machines. So they used quantity and hired everyone to be a pilot. Many of them would end up piloting balls, which are pretty much space coffins. If the Zabis didn't in fight and Garma lived, the situation would have been far worse for them.

You are very glad that you have your sunglasses on. You're also slightly impressed by how seriously her underlings must have taken that edict not to disturb her for anything, even emergencies. Speaking of which...

"Someday, perhaps." You can't crush her hopes entirely. "Do you like music?"

"Oui, I enjoy dancing very much." She smiles at you.

You realize she is probably thinking of a very different sort of music than you are. "So, about your ransom..."

"Hush, Monsieur Starwind. It is unseemly to discuss money right now. My people shall give yours the information on how to contact the Duke." She smiles even more.

"I'm not trying to hurt your feelings or anything, but...have you even heard what people in this system say about the Lady's people? You're not going to find a receptive audience, I think." You finally just say what you've been worried about her not knowing.

She laughs softly, "Oh yes, I have heard that propaganda and those lies. Fear not, mon duckling, I am not dispirited. I know why they tell you these things. When you meet the Lady, you too will understand everything."

Your PC beeps at you, Loriette glares at it, so you ignore it but get up, "Countess, I have to go for a while, but...who are the Paladins, specifically?"

She stands up with you, apparently her ankle is feeling better, "Anseis, Berenger, Engeler, Gerard, Gerer, Gerin, Oliver, Oton, Roland, Samson, Yvoire, Yvon. Among them, Sir Gavin's Roland is strongest, but he is generally considered the finest knight in Avalon and a worthy lover of the Queen." She smiles coquettishly, "The only reason they have not yet wed is that so long as he can find death in battle he refuses the very possibility of leaving her a widow. Behind him, Duke Eustace de Rothschild-Beauchamps, and his Oliver, along with Belegor and the Samson. The ranking after that is a matter of much dispute. Are you hungry for more challenges, perhaps? Ohohohoho~" She chuckles.

Your phone beeps again, "I have to get back to my people. Please forgive my hasty departure."

On impulse, you bow to her. She giggles at you and claps her hands in amusement, "Silly Rowarc. Go, mon duckling."

You speed up a little, and reply with a confirmation to Cornelius. There's a lot of resentment glaring at you from the eyes of the Avalonian pilots in their armored suits, but since you've beaten the Countess and they're surrounded by your ships they hold their tongues and you get to the Kaiser untroubled.

You close your mech's hatch, settle into the pilot seat, and send Miles a message to patch the call through to your mech as you take off.

A vidcomm window opens on one of your monitors. General Fairchild is sitting at ease behind her desk, her dress uniform swapped out for comfortable dark clothes. She looks as though she hasn't slept well, but there's a grim triumph in her eyes. "Well well, Starwind. I didn't think you would actually take my advice, but I hear you've defeated an Avalon ace. 'heroic pirate, rescues eldest daughter of deceased entrepreneur, beats an extremist using illegal technology, and on his way to get her medical attention, defeats and captures a avalonian ace' would really boost morale.

"I don't appreciate being kept waiting, but I understand you must have been busy. Looting and pillaging or...whatever you do to amuse yourself between tearing other mechs apart." She holds up a hand, "Of course, you'll receive proper recognition for your deeds recently. I've already ensured that Commodore Abujamal's name has been blackened permanently for his misdeeds, closed several folders on the affair with the Green Skulls, and ensured that Lieutenant Blanchett of Soul A and his sister are in no more risk of being brought up on charges for divulging classified information to pirates. Nobody is pursuing you for taking Lady Ahmad with you, either, I've seen to that as well. Tonight, I'm even going to grit my teeth, smile for the cameras, and praise you for fighting against the terrorists who attacked the Martian Gate. So, at last, we can talk on mostly even footing."

"Really? I'm well aware that if I was ever stupid enough to accept marching orders from you, you'd have me attacking Avalon itself in a Shetland tomorrow. Alone. With one arm nonfunctional." You don't bother to contain your sarcasm, folding your arms across your chest. The Kaiser mimics you in flight.

"If only. This is why you would make an awful fit for SOUL, Starwind. You're like a spiked flail when I need a scalpel, and one with a penchant for making my life difficult." Her mouth twitches.

"That answers your question about what I do for entertainment." You smile, "So, did Clemmy tell you? Ah, you must want an invitation to the wedding."

You hear her teeth grind, "When, not if, WHEN you hurt her, I will enjoy destroying you before her eyes. Meanwhile, I have the defense of this system to arrange. The bounty on a Paladin of Avalon...and before you try to get cute, I mean the pilot...may be retroactive, but it is substantial enough to make even your head spin. Enough for you to afford a colony of your own, that way you can stop whoring yourself to Red Siren for a berth."

If we do hurt her, she's know that Avalon has perfect the usage of pod people, and replaced us as the first victim.
>>
>>48614545

That's a cute Fatima.

"If you call what i am doing whoring what do you consider your career?"

"And when this double concert of yours turns out to be a trap i will personally ruin you."
>>
>>48614550
"Terrorists? While I may dislike them, do at least have the dignity of admitting that they are a rival nation. Pretending otherwise just makes you look silly. And makes me rather leery of turning her over if you intend to treat her as a terrorist. Given recent events, I'm sure you understand."
>>
>>48614526
An interesting proposal and certainly one to think about for the time being. As is though, I plan to sit on this for a while. If you plan on visiting for that concert, we can negotiate terms more reasonably, face to face. Sure we have plenty to talk about after all.

Still, on the name of my father(insert name here) and my mother(insert name here), I promise not to harm Clemmy or her feelings. She is a good girl and does not need that sort of manipulation.
>>
>>48614622
Every opposing force is a terrorist until they win.
>>
>>48614526
I may be a pirate, "General", but at least I have my standards. The Paladin's fate is not up to your judgement to make.
>>
>>48614526
Clemmy is trying so hard to make you a Fairy godmother, the least you could do is support her and show up to the wedding

"Is it really whoring when I enjoy it as much as she does?" You muse, leaning back in your chair and getting cozy. You've had this seat since it was in your Harpy Custom, the settings are as customized for your comfort as the Kaiser is to your fighting style.

The General blinks, "Absolutely. I've met whores who enjoyed their line of work before."

"You do seem very dedicated to your career, I suppose you must be one of them. I may be a pirate, 'general', but I at least have standards. The most I can promise is that I'll think about it, and negotiate with you when you visit us for the concert. Surely we have plenty to talk about, face to face. Furthermore, when this concert turns out to be a trap I will personally break your neck." Your words are all the more chilling for the casual sincerity in them.

Her eyes narrow, "If you lived for anything larger than yourself, Starwind, you might have an inkling of the sacrifices I've had to make. Just like your mother, I've given myself body and soul to cleaning up this galaxy. It's a pity there isn't more of Christina LeChance in you. Your father ruined her life, and ruined her career, and it makes me legitimately sad that someone who could have been my godson takes after him so strongly." She's obviously trying to keep calm and not doing a good job of it.

"You don't have the right to talk about my parents, and you don't know anything about my parents. I'm done with this, see you at the concert. If Clemmy is an even better girl than usual, and manages to make my disdain for you recede even slightly, you might get a godchild who takes after her. She seems very excited about our offspring having a Fairy godmother." You reach for the switch to terminate the call.

"Wait!" Although she looks ready to spit plasma at you, the sheer intensity in her voice makes you hesitate, "Starwind, I loathe you and you loathe me, but we're both natives of the Solar System, are we not? You may be the lowest form of criminal, but I do not believe...yet...that you are a Green Men sympathizer." She pauses, watching your reaction, then nods as she understands, "You already knew what they serve."

"Yes." You respond monosyllabically, giving nothing away.

"And you know what the Green Men do?" She continues, doggedly, "Damn you Starwind, you know what they do, what they've done! This isn't about you and me, this isn't about the lives caught between our disagreement, this is about humanity!"

>[What say]
>>
>>48614937
Why not point it out now? Since we're trading barbs. Nobody badmouths our family.
>>
>>48614899

Would we trade the Countess for the real First Mate?
>>
>>48614973
>I'm not taking sides in this fight, but I'm going to make damn sure that nobody ruins my neighborhood

Were not taking any sides but if they come in trying to take over the system and making are lives worse were not going to stand for it
>>
>>48614996
Aw shit. That's tempting.
>>
>>48614996

Nah, for one we ain't that heartless, for another Fairchild wouldn't give up her little pet psychopath that easily, the bitch is too useful right now.
>>
>>48614996
Lets save that for when we capture the duke or one of the other knights
>>
>>48614973
"You have seen the monsters created by the war, The corps are Monsters genera,l just like the green men. i look forward to watching both burn"
>>
>>48614973
Of the two "Green Men" I have personally met, they have both treated me fairly and with honor. Of a sort. I know that they serve a fallen master, just as I know that some of your people are sadistic murderers justifying killing innocents in the name of the greater good. Painting with a broad brush dishonors what you should stand for,
>>
>>48614973
Yo we know some other military people, why dont we just trade her to them?
>>
>>48614937
Really, thats sort of what irks me. Half of the shit that went wrong for Early Roark and triple C could have been solved by Fairchild actually serving like a godmother and taking care of them.

>>48614973
You're right. It is about humanity and I don't like the Green men. And while I am a dirty pirate, I do what I can to not sacrifice my humanity and make my family disappointed in me.

If the goddess tries shit to my people, she will go on my list and she will go down. Its the same list that First Mate of yours is on for Killing my brother, the one who actually took after my mother.
>>
>>48615049
We haven't met any green men friendo, we met brainwashed colaborators.
>>
>>48615065
How about we don't? One shes another waifu to have some fun with and two we should trade the juicier more dangerous targets. Plus we get to rub this shit in Fairies face.
>>
>>48615096
But the money tho.
>>
>>48615087
But she calls them all that homie. That's the point. It's not so simple. Same with the humans. The easily manipulated media does the same shit. Fairy wouldn't give a damn that our new hostage was a cripple given new purpose and a new life. She'd just crucify her in front of a camera.
>>
>>48615126
I honestly don't trust Fairchild to not brutally torture her and spur the remaining 11 to start doing war crimes. She seems the sort.
>>
>>48615126
Were going to be rolling in money from the tourney and Siren's concert if we bill them right. Think about the merch sales, Roarke t-shirts, Knuckle Kaiser foam fingers, Rosita's cds, Roake Dakis, the list goes on and on
>>
>>48615126
Money ain't everything to us. We also have honor. And booty is an excellent alternative to money. Also we have the tournament and Oda's money making schemes coming up.
>>
>>48614973
>"They are not Green Men; they cannot do as the Green Men have done - only their leader has that power. They are honorable, or at least seem to be, and will be strong allies, if turned to our cause. I hope to already have planted a seed of doubt in one of them. With time, it may bear fruit."
>"If not, well, I expect the UJCIDF shouldn't have too much trouble against one more. If you do, I suppose I'll have to act, while being very disappointed in you."
>>

She calls the queen a green man, not them. Plus they have already had more than enough experience with sympathizers at this point. Everyone the generation above roarke has.

>"Disagreement?" You've let an entire colony die for your moronic decision to open fire on an Avalonian Flagship. Your attack dog, 'the First Mate', killed my captain, my squadmates, my brother and Juno knows how many more if I hadn't stop her. You have absolutely no right to dictate to me what is good for humanity.
>>
>>48615203
Limit it to 10 that way we can jack up the price exponentially
>>
>>48615173
She says they. Not singular. So far these people, and they are people, in the sense of the narrative of this quest haven't done half the shit to us as Fairbitch and her pet psycho has. At the very least we can be petty to her. Our journey is pretty personal anyways, once the real big bad is revealed we can win it for everyone ever. We shouldn't just jump on the military dick just yet.
>>
>>48615224
Implying Clemmy and co wouldn't buy them immediately
>>
>>48615242
Not when we give them personalized ones before the event
>>
>>48615252

That, sir is why you earn the big bucks.
>>
>>48615234
They can refer to a single person you know. She is also talking about them as a race. And I am pretty sure as a race they tried to subjugate or exterminate all humans so they can go fuck right off.
>>
>>48615175

Genius!
>>
>>48615224
First 10 are recalled due to a printing defect. No one returns them, of course, but we release another 10 into the market.
>>
>>48615264
She also ordered the execution of the crew of an entire ship because Red siren and Sam played a prank on her. She also has our personal fuckboy of a nemesis on speed dial. Hardly a beacon of the righteous. Lets just say both sides have outliers. She's a piece of shit and the new girl ain't so bad.
>>
I'm giving you a bit more time because the dispute going on (not the one about selling mugs, although that's also interesting) is kind of key to Roarke's response here, I think, because it measures how sympathetic he is to Green Men followers versus the UJCIDF (or at least Fairchild's faction).
>>
>>48615350
We never met the new girl, she is probably growing a forest of her homeboys as we speak.
>>
>>48615359

And I encourage everyone who's still awake to provide their input into it.
>>
>>48615362
New girl meaning the noblewoman/paladin who we just beat in fair combat, then carried to her ship and massaged.
>>
>>48615359
There both shades of grey, Fairchild has some people we like and Greenmen have some people we are going to like. But fuck both factions, Fairchild and her thugs are shithead and Greenmen are monsters. We should try and steal away people we like into our group and focus on establishing ourselves as king of the belt
>>
>>48615008
>>48615359
well, at our very core wwe're pirates, so like thunder said. we won't take sides, but we'll make sure to fuck shit up if the avalonians begin to do stupid shit on our turf.
>>
>>48615359
Something along the lines of being fine with the UJCIDF but having a problem with how she has been handling things
We fight to keep our way of life in the belt not to be wardogs for either faction
something something darkside
>>
>>48615359
My general thoughts is that roarke finds the only truely evil one will be the so-called goddess, the UJCIDF will have to fight the avalonians but a peace deal might eventually be possible.

So he'd fight to stop the green men from wrecking shit but he wont go all genocide on them except maybe to eliminate their queen.
>>
>>48615371
eh, basically i think what we're trying to says is that we're not going to take sides in the war but will help defend the Sol system if Avalon invades with a large fleet. And if Fairy was really loved Roarke's mother ask her why she didn't take them in as kids.
>>
>>48615371
I would say that he is primarily on the side of the UJCIDF (or rather, the people of the solar system; he doesn't really care for the UJCIDF in particular) simply because he was raised in the solar system and taught from young how monstrous the Green Men were, but he realizes that the Lady's followers are people like any other - and better than some - and hopes that they can be convinced to defect, or at least start to question their indoctrination.

He's also a pirate, and has to look out for his people first and foremost. If he can make a profit off staying out of the war to keep his crew alive and happy, so be it.
>>
>>48615394
Exactly. It's like in Fallout New Vegas. You could be good or evil, or go Wild Card and kick all the shitty people in the teeth and be the king.
>>
>>48615394
So kind of like Vegas? Kill House and go for independence route style.
>>
>>48615359
I stand by my decision of, 'whoever tries to start shit, eats shit'. We'll ransom people back to their countries, we'll sell some stuff or data if the price is right, but if someone attacks our people or try to do something stupid for the greater good, they are going to be smacked the fuck down.

Fairchild has a strike with First Mate, and the Goddess has a strike for being a green man who gives no shit about the people her family slaughtered. It all matters on one thing; who has the balls to enrage the Black Ogre first?
>>
>>48615427
Falloutbro!
>>
>>48615409
They love their queen though almost all of them are brainwashed to shit. If we kill her were public enemy number one and they will never make peace with us, so either kill all of them or leave the queen to someone else.

>>48615427
Pretty much with more blackjack and people switching sides
>>
>>48615394
We are already titled the pirate king
>>
>>48615434
The first mate dies first.
>>
>>48615458
Ya but how much control do we really have over the belt? What I mean is we actually start establishing boarders setting up colonies, the works.
>>
>>48615458
Damn right. We take care of our own and kick the fuck out of the ones who need it. Anyone else can stand aside or join us.
>>
>>48615359
I'd vote for not taking Fairchild's side. Not that we are too childish or blinded by hate. We still hate her but we wouldn't fuck up the solar system for it. That's not who we are. The main point is that Avalon hasn't fucked us up or anyone on the system. As long as that hasn't happened then they are better than Fairchild's faction who can sacrifice people without a thought. Besides from Kirito and Drill's attitude they wouldn't seem inclined to destroy the common people. If they do though, we have a pirate fleet to raise and fight the Avalonians. Like a sleeping dragon? Or a tiger that hunts in his own territory but will defend it to the death.
>>
>>48615477
Yea. We should openly announce this shit at the tournament. To anyone who isn't or won't be apart of either side. There is a third side now.
>>
>>48615495
If were going to do that then lets do it before the finals and after the concert so Fairy won't be able to do as much
>>
>>48615495
Doesn't really constitute a side if we're just keeping out of it, does it?

>>48615486
Avlon are the ones who destroyed the fucking colony. Even if she is a dozy bitch fairchilds ship physically could not do that. If they are so fucking great why are they firing in such a way they can murder colonys? They are both as bad as each other.
>>
>>48615518
Yes?
>>
>>48615533
Plus we've only met two of them, Drills might be on the level but I wouldn't put it past the Duke to lie to us. Were becoming a big player in this and I can see him throwing on the whole niceness act so we join him
>>
>>48615518
Not keeping out of it. We're pirates but we can also operate as an Extra-legal form of justice. We basically already are. Almost singlehandedly wrecking the Green Skulls. Instead of saying hey I'm gonna stay out of this, we draw a line in the sand, anyone who steps out of line gets fucked. Agressively Neutral.

"Disagreement." Your voice is dangerously flat, and the look in your eyes is very much like the look in the Knuckle Kaiser's when its visor is up as you look the General dead in the eye over the rims of your sunglasses, "You let an entire colony be ravaged by the Green Skulls, and you killed nearly all of the survivors opening fire on an Avalonian starship you couldn't handle. The only people who survived Suleiman 1 survived because they joined ME. Your attack dog killed my captain, my squadmates, half of the original Iron Kestrels, my brother, and Minerva knows how many more people." Your voice grows a hair louder, "You dare bring up my mother? Cassius was the one who took after her, and he died trying to protect two innocent people who were witnesses to YOUR mistakes. You have no right to dictate to me about humanity. Besides, if you were that close, why did I never hear about you? The first time I saw your face was on television, with you framing me for a crime I didn't commit."

"It's sad that you interpret events that way." She responds, in a bland, perfectly scripted voice neither confirming nor denying what she's been accused of, then she snaps at you in a more human tone, "And it was because of your damned father. Alexander Starwind never let me near his family. After he died, frankly I couldn't bear to see his face and his mannerisms in his children, but I did my part nonetheless. I pulled several strings to ensure your brother kept his job and could receive prosthetics for his legs, and I considered him key SOUL personnel enough to transfer him to my flagship despite his relationship with you when I found out he had the spine to serve his nation and the talent to make it in SOUL. I didn't order him killed for treason, it just turned out that way. It was over before I even knew it had happened, and I felt mildly annoyed because I had invested time and effort into him."

>>
>>48615533
To be fair, we met with the dude and he was cool with us. Totally could have wrecked our shit. He said an over zealous crewmember attacked when they were fired upon. Would Fairchild hold back if there were innocents around us and noone could see? Nobody is blameless but we have someone who doesn't do things personally and someone who definitely makes everything personal.
>>
>>48615528
Thinking more on this, if were going to make this statement then lets invite some of our friends in the Navy to come and watch our tourney (Stern, Kycilla, Soul A) and then approach them about joining us.

>>48615594
Were not handing over jack shit we don't need that kind of reputation

>>48615609
If you want someone to join your side then you generally are nice to them, he even bribed us with nobility and control over planets
>>
>>48615609
Nigger basically fired a shotgun in the direction of a preschool. Someone who doesn't have a handle on a weapon of that power is not fit to be in command of it. So either he is a lying shit or he is incompetent.
>>
>>48615601
Cassius was an investment to you? HE WAS MY FAMILY!
>>
>>48615518
Sort of. Think of the Belt as a neutral zone with some heavy taxes for going through. Sure we might descend for something juicy, but for the most part we don't kill people of value or civvies and will ransom them off. Attack our people or innocents on our turf? That brings trouble.

>>48615601
>and I felt mildly annoyed because I had invested time and effort into him.
Oh sweet summer fairchild.. you have no idea the trouble you brought on your doorstep. Thats strike two.
>>
>>48615601
I mean, look at this shit. She's practically a sociopath. She sees her people as tools. I'm sure we'll meet an Avalonian who is a piece of shit, but so far Fairchild is up there.
>>
>>48615486
Thats the thing, yet.

Their operations will is with an end goal of delivering punishment on mars and other members of the solar system for the war against the green men. Its only a matter of time before they actually begin genociding and theres a good number of crew and waifus who dont want to see anything happen to those they care about in those places. Mars for fatima, sam's brother, etc.
>>
>>48615637

Really, we should just work eith moe's beau.

Not with fairchild's faction
>>
>>48615623
To be fair, he comes from the position of a poor farmboy. Not just a farmboy but a bastard child of a noble. He was given a gift, and he saw us as someone honorable who could be given a gift as well. Not saying he won't be a shit, but his position looks better than literal psycho bitch.
>>
>>48615677
His background means literally nothing. I bet he wouldn't be so giving if we didnt have a small army at our back.
>>
>>48615677
His backround could go alot of different ways anon, he might be a bitter man whose overly ambitious and plans to get revenge on his family for not supporting him
>>
>>48615633
His crew jumped in, was shot at then fired back. If you are powerful, get suckerpunched and fight back but they dodge and you hit someone else. Yea it sucks but these dudes don't know where they are. What it looks like is they have personal power but no Intel. When he came to us, they hailed us. Fairchild never gave em a chance. How much you wanna bet they try and parlay a bunch to minimize damage, at least to save face? Would she-bitch do that?
>>
Hey, let's prepare before the concert. Just in case Fairchild sends some shenanigans up our way and jack up where we will be keeping the Avalonians. Put them in a secure place while the concert is going on. Make three prisoner transportation. two in public and another in secret. Have the public one be only seen with our crew and another seen by Red's people on the colony briefly. Have the secret one be only with us and the more combat ready of our group (Clemmy, Moe, Oda, Richard, Miles) where we transport the prisoners in disguise one at a time. This way we will know if theres a mole in our crew if they hit up our destination with the kestrel transport or a mole in the Auditorium if they hit up that destination.
>>
>>48615736
Just have her sit next to us, hand cuff her to us if you want extra insurance
>>
>>48615715
Fairchild doesn't have to give them a chance, he is an invading army from a nation they are at war with in a ship with a lot more firepower than her own. One who is apparently to dumb to spot a giant fucking colony floating in space or have control of a weapon that can core said colony in one shot.
>>
>>48615736
Only mole i can think of is the engineer chick who escaped with Moe and the Aussie.
Speaking of which, what the fuck ever happened to that bastard?

She rubs her temples, "The more you rise in this world, Roarke, the more you realize just how many humans there are and just how little power you have to stop them from dying. They're like grains of sand, slipping through your fingers. Yours and mine too. With every few breaths, enough children to form an army are born across the countless dim campfires of humanity scattered across these stars, and an equal number of people die stupid, pointless deaths that could easily have been avoided. Your brother was just one of them, and before you start screaming at me about how he was your family, let me just say that I don't care. Nobody but you does. You get worked up over these small things, while I'm setting aside my personal outrage at your existence to clean the gunk and rot from the mechanism that directs the flow of all these lives even if it means temporarily supporting you. In the end, I'm doing more for the galaxy than you ever could." Her voice becomes thick with scorn, "Here is my prediction. The pilot is female, and because you're a rampaging libidinous misogynist your neanderthal brain has taken hold and you're hoping to fuck her too. If it was a man, you'd be quibbling with me over the price already. Have fun with your conquest, I'll see you at the concert, where you will hand her over and I will put her up on a fucking cross on live television. Do we understand each other?"

>[Do you?]
>>
>>48615697
Background means everything. Ours makes up a portion of who we are. We came from workers who were oppressed by the government. Then eventually pirate. He could of attacked or threatened. His ship can destroy a colony. Instead he noticed we talked to him from inside a mech and talked. Treated us fairly. That's different.

>>
>>48615764
Well now we're definitely not because that was just fucking rude.
>>
>>48615715

My only comment on this is that Eustace did not see...what was it...three or four Medium Striker-grade cruisers that were noticeably mismatched in the same category as he would view a Wels-class flying the UJCIDF flag.

>>48615764
The Auditorium is Red's. You do whatever it is you two discussed there. The Avalonians are MY prisoner. You touch them without my agreement and I will break you.

Whats different is he is looking for mercenaries and a significant portion of Fairchild and the militaries job is killing or arresting pirates, which we happen to be.

He is a captain of a ship, captains don't fire themselves. She shot at them seconds after they warped in, when they're disoriented. Then Overzealous gunner. Plenty of real world examples of this Anon.

You can dress it up any which way you like but I've seen you for what you are and the only thing that separates you from the worst scum in the belt is your shiny badges and that bloodstained uniform you seem so fond of.

See you at the concert.
>>
>>48615818
eh we've recruited male pilots before though, and a badass knight would have been a nice edition to the bro squad with oda and moe, but more waifus are nice too.
or did you mean about the human lives vs scale of humanity as a whole thing.
>>
>>48615787
So...again, they jumped in and before the captain of the ship, who doesn't have his hands on the weapons didn't get a chance to do anything before his ship was fired upon? And he apparently personally killed the guy who acted without orders and killed innocents?
>>
>>48615821
Even more reason not to be shooting willy nilly.
>>
>>48615838
Weren't we saying how we would trade the duke or someone like 20 minutes ago?
>>
>>48615821
And if we did guide them and give them intel we would be shooting ourselves in the foot. We would become a traitor to the solar system and would have to join up with the Greenmen out of necessity
>>
>>48615764
Maybe, but not on what you think. Believe it or not, a person's merit or character matter more to me than you realize. I have no desire to play 'puppet master', and those under my care I take care of as people. Male or female. If you harm them, even one of the guys who you think I don't care for.. you will see how mad I can get.

>>48615818
You say that, but a noble lad with a shit tons of manners would fit well with Moe and Avi. Snuu snuu for the girls, head ruffles for the guys.
>>
>>48615864
I don't like the duke or trust him at all so I would be fine with it if the price was right
>>
>>48615846
So he doesn't have control of his crew is what you are saying? Because I dont see avi accidentally shooting a fucking super weapon.
>>
>>48615864
not really. One person was, but I'd be against it. Never sell hostages to their enemies. Its not right and they will be treated less than human. Leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

>>48615880
Boy, I wouldn't send Fairchild to the Avalonians, I won't do that to the duke.
>>
>>48615837
>>48615852
It's almost as if people in the military are just that, people. Who are fallible. Also, if you have passwords and fail safes on your main weapon that only the captain can allow access to in a time of war, you're just asking to lose. It's unreasonable, they actually acted in self defense. But hurt innocents, then the dude who did it got executed.
>>
>>48615764
>Just give a sad laugh, then: I wish I could have gotten clemmy away from you sooner, that megalomania of yours is toxic. *sigh* the best you will ever have from me after this is neutrality, never cooperation.
>>
>>48615869
I never said anything about guiding em. I just pointed out things in our conversation with the dude. Which other anons maybe didn't see.
>>
>>48615864

I wasn't here for that bit, but I would trade him in, to anyone other than fairchild and if I was sure he would be treated humanely.

This bitch would castrate him, crucify him, and then set him of fire with white phosphorous on live television and laugh while she does so.
>>
>>48615899
Thats what he wanted from us though, that and attacking the gates

>>48615888
I would rather get rid of an enemy then let them get a chance to come back and try and attack me again
>>
>>48615890
>this massive space weapon that can wipe out hundreds of thousands of people can be fired by any looser at the bridge
Also
>the crew is made of people who are jumpy enough to fire said weapon on reflex with no authorization
Sounds legit to me.
>>
>>48615903
Yeah, Fairy's hit full on cartoon nazi on the evil meter with the whole crucifixion on live television bit.
>>
>>48615909
Then kill them yourself instead of leaving them to a fate worse than death. Enemies will be dealt with, but we are NOT becoming damn dogs for anyone.
>>
>>48615886
Okay. Avi has a small but awesome ship. Cool but not a wrecking ball. Bigger ships generally need more stuff to operate, a captain has to watch over more. So we gate in, get fired upon, our crew would expect to run. These guys are obviously different, possibly green...in more ways than one. Trying to compare Avi to any of them is silly duders.
>>
>>48615939
Find me one example of someone firing the main batteries of a battleship with no authorization from the captain while the captain is present at the bridge in real life.
>>
>>48615928
Which is funny, cause i'm seeing more hate for a space elf who's red shirt accidently shot through a ship. Theres someone who will personally order innocent people to die talking to us.
>>
>>48615935

A colony anon, not a ship a colony. Something big enough to dock multiple ships to that thousands of people live on.
Its like if someone accidentally sunk a ship bigger than an aircraft carrier with nothing but civilians on board.
>>
>>48615939
the fact that professional navy personnel on a special raid into enemy territory have less trigger discipline or experience than a 14 year old kid on a pirate ship does not reflect well on the Avalon, or the Duke.
>>
>>48615956
It's probably his character portrait and the assumed plot bullshit that goes with it.

So you cant is what you are saying? You could look for someone who fired a broadside of cannons into natives with no orders from the captain if you want.

"I understand exactly what you're trying to say, but you're not understanding some essential facts of this situation. You keep talking about humanity and human lives, but the pilot is human too. You've called her it and they throughout this conversation as if she was just some doll for you to hang up so you get to be on JNN. My brother was a human as well. You've lost the ability to see human lives because you've stopped caring about the individual ones. Whatever deal your idol worked out with Red Siren is your affair, but my prisoners are mine, male or female. Bucephalus Heavy Industries killed my parents and your people killed my brother, I don't answer to you and I damned sure won't hop when you say frog. If I see a Green Man, I'll crucify it myself, but I'm going to treat my human captives like humans and if you get in my way I'll do to you when I've done to your minions every time we've met. I'll see you at the concert, maybe by then you'll have found some better manners. Understand me now, if you pull any shit while you are here I will personally beat the living shit out of you right in front of those cameras, and nothing is going to stop me. Not Clemmy, not my men, and not you."

"Well I...that is...at the concert then, Starwind." Her voice is terse as the sound of paper being cut. Before the vidcomm is cut off, you see her hurl a desk ornament and hear her swear colorfully.

You shake your head. You need to figure out what you're doing with this particular captive, and you need to figure it out soon. For once, getting filthy rich is the least of your worries.

Still, speaking of individual human lives, you have something important to do. You fly to Auditorium, entering through a public mech bay. As always, Red Siren has been good to you...and she'll complain endlessly that people will say she's going soft as she continues spoiling you. She's had Fatima put up in a hospital more upscale than anywhere you've ever been treated at before.

If Fairchild's beams did pierce the colony, atmospheric decompression would STILL kill everyone in the colony. The idiot who shot stupidy just made it more immediate.

Theres another thing, we're assuming everything he said was the truth. For all we know, he lied in order to portray his forces as more noble but clumsy when he could have order the strike himself.

We shouldnt just believe his words outright. We know to not trust fairchild due to the various povs we've seen from her, we might find that too from an avalonian pov.

Even a ship detonating from ammo cookoff has survivors in sealed off sections.
>>
>>48616024

He was also firing into the volley that destroyed the Agamemnon, so he might have personally avenged his dad. He also got so fired up he made the Rhinehawk's old crew A-Class, before enlarging it with new recruits upon making it a bigger ship caused it to average back out at B.
>>
>>48616053
She flipped out, attacked and then ran. They had an apparently overzealous gunner who didn't account for the orientation of the ship attack with a weapon designed to hurt larger targets. tldr yea she broke away first.

Do we know all the crimes she commited? You assume she's friendly because she is being respectful for us. Perhaps she gassed a colony or two. Perhaps she actually tortured people. We don't know and you are putting a lot of trust in her over one single thing.
>>48616060
Her problems could be because he's not killing enough savages or because he's not going with a more aggressive stance. Do not assume, but treat them fairly. As is, only Fairchild and First Mate have proven that they are willing to go to great lengths for their ideals. The Duke lacks evidence of personal misdeed other than paranoia and seeing the worst.
>>
>>48616139
What i'm gathering is that us humans have numbers and positioning, they have to level the field somehow. Also, that's just on a ship, what else do these avalonians got? What does Fairchild have under her sleeve? And does she have someone behind her? something tells me she doesn't have the charisma for half the shit shes pulled.
>>
>>48616139
Well they are fighting a war right now.
>>48616123
I'm not certain about this but I am pretty sure that if someone on the crew fires the guns on a ship the captain is still responsible for what the shots do. I mean thats why he is the captain, he is supposed to be in charge and in control so he has the responsibility.
>>

In feudal situations, things are slightly different. An officer has a certain amount of honor and responsibility onto themselves. He also seems to be more of a pilot than an admiral. Kind of like us. Our growth came from us coming into power. I wouldn't be surprised if he's new.
>>
>>48616162

Isn't he really 50 years old or something?
>>
>>48616180
Yeah.. rather than actual talent it seems that the entire force uses nobility and closeness to the goddess to determine position. The 12 were 'chosen' and with how Marie was speaking, there is certainly a huge difference in social standings. If the bridge crew is only nobility of a certain rank, inexperienced officers would be very likely.
>>
>>48616175
>>48616199

Suleiman 1 was a good-sized mining colony. Consider the number of Green Skulls it took to subdue it, then consider the 304 mecha and seven ships you possess.
>>
>>48616227
Damn duders. Maybe, but he was also a farmer. This elevation/forced evolution stuff be crazy.
>>
>>48616217
In my eyes someone in charge of a ship who accidentally blows up a colony is worse than someone in charge of a ship that intentionally blows one up. At least the person doing it on purpose knows what he is doing. Anyone who cant keep control of a weapon that can wipe out the equivalent of a city is not someone I want to associate with.
>>
>>48616239
So we could probably hold around 3 or 4 colonies
>>
>>48616232
Their mechs seem to be a cut above. Maybe they just have less able bodies? It could be similar to the original Gundam. The Federation had so many more people, Zeon ended up resorting to extreme measures to keep up. Plus they had assholes in charge.
>>
>>48616252
Okay, you have your opinion man. Even if it is stupid and morally bankrupt.
>>
>>48616270
Not just that, but there also seems to be the insertion of skill thats not naturally grown. So you have a bunch of 'geniuses' who have no actual experience in their roles. I mean, shit.. it's like if Jesus was on the bridge crew. He scores well enough on the sims, but he'd probably freak the hell out if a enemy ship shot at him.
>>
>>48616259

That depends on the state you have them in. Active military occupation obviously takes more manpower than the populace actively thinking of themselves as an Iron Kestrels town and garrisoning their own colony with their own defenses and contributing forces to your fleet.
>>
>>48616280
Oh yeah, well here's the thing. Whats to stop them doing it again by accident? If they can fuck up once they can fuck up again. How many people has Fairchild killed so far with her shit? Couple hundred maybe? A thousand? Hes already killed more than that and he didn't even mean to.
>>
>>48616295
He almost shot Pierre in our first fight with them too. It's why he almost got kicked out but was transferred to the other squad.
>>
>>48616295
The paladins are already aces though, they have been out fighting in the war.
>>
>>48616320
Indeed. Now imagine a bridge crew with anywhere from 1 to possibly a dozen Jesuses and tell me thats not the scariest shit to have to deal with as a commanding officer.

>>48616329
He mentioned that some of the talent of his sword was given to him by said goddess so while some was earned, some was implanted. You also must realize that the Paladins are a special case and their forces are pretty vast. They likely have plenty of fresh recruits.
>>
>>48616319
What's to stop Fairchild from doing more and more of her shit. You come from a wildly different viewpoint. There's stupid, which can be rectified. Then there is someone who is vicious and believes her cause to be justified, to a ridiculous degree. There is no reasoning to justify someone who will kill innocents willingly. You can have your opinion, doesn't make you right.
>>
>>48616358
Fairchild is a shit, I never said she wasnt. But even with all the shit she has done she hasn't caused the same amount of deaths the duke has through sheer negligence. At least fairchild is killing people on purpose.
>>
>>48616392
I would consider all the people the green skulls killed when she let them do their own thing and the shit Rashad did as negligence. If I recall, a good half of the people were dead and the other half didn't have long if we didn't intervene.

You aren't allowed into the surgery room, naturally, so you sit on a padded bench outside. The hospital is light, airy, in a style of high roofs and abundant light sources that has been common for centuries, but the tan and white room doesn't feel very open to you. You feel like you're still enclosed by your cockpit, squeezed all around by the pressures of your duties, and bolstered only by the armor of your role as the Admiral.

"Honestly..." You rub your hand over your face, "A few months ago, I was just the First Mate of a fifty-man crew." Some part of you still is, a part of you that occasionally wonders if this is all just a dream and that really you're dying of oxygen deprivation in your Harpy Custom while dreaming of finding a mysterious new mech and avenging everyone.

Thoughts beat down on you like the patter of enemy fire, like dozens of tiny voices arguing back and forth about what course you want to go on. You're surprised by how little you trust anyone in this equation. Not Duke Eustace, not Countess Loriette, and certainly not General Fairchild. The worst part is, rationally you know you're in no shape to make a decision. Roughly two or three times per minute, you glance over at the door to the surgery, wishing you had Fatima here to talk to about this. You're sure you know what a pious Martian girl would say about the Countess, but you still want her here. Eventually you stop worrying about anything else but her.

Eventually, Cornelius emerges, removing his mask, "Go on in, Dude. She's sleeping normally now, the operation was, I believe, a success. We'll know when she wakes up."

You pat him on the shoulder wordlessly. You've got an image to maintain, nothing you could say right now would sound strong enough, except, "Thanks."

Um. Allowing the Green Skulls free reign to do as they please has a lot of baggage against your argument man, she also practically acknowledge her involvement with mister martian mind controller too. She's laying in bed, in a simple white hospital gown, with her headscarf removed and a bandage around her forehead. Her eyes are closed, at least, and her breathing is slow and regular.

You pull up a chair next to the bed, looking down at her. You start to reach for her hand, then you hesitate. With a smile, you upzip the pocket of your pilot suit, and take out your harmonica.

There's nothing you need to say. Words are a bother right now, as it stands. You just play for her, and let your heart speak through the music of your dad's old harmonica. You play every song you know, you improv a little, and you play Piano Man half a dozen times.

One of the nurses arrives to tell you visiting hours are over, and Cornelius scolds her away, leaving you alone and closing the door.

You're just pausing for a moment to catch your breath when you see her smiling, and she reaches out and touches your arm, "My wolf, is that you?" She blinks, opening her eyes, "Did that bastard Rashad get you too? Are we together in paradise? At least we are together, my sweet wolf." She reaches up, touching your face with a weary smile, "Or perhaps you are some sort of houri, my reward for good behavior."

"What's a houri?" You ask.

"Unlettered brute, it is...wait, that really is you? Her gaze sharpens a little, and she reaches up, gingerly touching the bandage on her forehead, "I'm not dead, am I?"

"Not unless I died too and didn't notice. Being dead would almost be a relief from all of this work." You smile, taking off your sunglasses and putting them away. You don't need them right now.

"I saw Rashad do it. He put something in our coffee, a sedative. I saw him throw my father over the railing. After that..." Her fingers tighten painfully on your cheek.

"He used one of the Green Skulls' circlets to make you controllable. I beat him up in front of his wedding guests, took you back, and then I beat him to death with the Kaiser when he pursued in a mech. Also I have yet another hostage. Welcome back, piano girl." You smile, despite the pain of being pinched.

"So after all, you did ruin my special day! Roarke Starwind, how are you going to make it up to me!?" Fatima rolls her eyes, then sits up and throws her arms around your neck, tears streaming down her cheeks, "You idiot, you could have gotten hurt..."

"So what? I'm tough, I'll handle it. Besides, I made a promise. Like I said, there weren't enough starships or mecha on Mars to stop me from taking you back." You hold her close, she's still a little wobbly, "Rashad stuck a plasma talon through the Kaiser's powerplant, but that's nothing, I had to save you, so I did." You inject a little levity into your voice, and she responds by bringing her elbow down on your head in a gentle bonk.

"You can be too honest, sometimes. From anyone else, I would think they were making it up, but in your case I know that you really did have that happen. Must you always make me worry?" She scolds you while hugging tightly onto your shoulders.

"It makes me feel cared-for." You tease her, and she sighs happily, balling her hands up in your shirt and pulling you down into a kiss.

I can't really come up with 80's names.

Acheron of the Belt
The Scorned's Rest
Redemption Unwavering
Pretty much going to be a pirate colony right? Might as well embrace it but it shouldn't sound menacing or a place of malice because that's not who we are.

Whats Judah and his family been up to while on Auditorium? And who did Dozel leave to watch Athena when he went with us?
>>
>>48616840
I assume he brought her.

Athena is now a boss of a mafiaso gang in the Auditorium. People pay her protection money in the form of candy.

This really is space one piece.

She keeps asking this one boy to catch her while some weirdo in a mask watches from a distance.

Well at least that part of her life is normal

At this point, I would not be surprised if she starts recruiting kids for when she is old enough to pilot just so she could have her own crew with her.

>All the kids think shes playing a game
You can get alot of jokes out of that premise

Kinda disappointed no one came up with: "Ask yourself this question Fairchild: what would my mother think of you if she knew what you've done?"

Maybe next sess anon, when we meet Fairchild in person during Darth Idol's visit.
