The team discovered a great staircase heading both upwards and down into the depths. Tsuki made a shadow clone to go up, while the rest of the team went downwards. Upon reaching the bottom, they discovered a vast graveyard of people, seemly turned into wood. According to Hinata, though they were long dead, the faintest signature of chakra remained….

Pushing forward, the team found another area for worship, displaying a grand mural, depicting a massive tree, with people surrounding it in supplication. Atop it, a woman not unlike a deity rested. Beneath it, a simple offering box lay. It was at this moment that Tsuki’s clone perished- burnt alive by dark flames, seemingly conjured out of thin air by Kisame’s mysterious partner.

“Tell Itachi that I am here. I’m sure we have much to discuss…” a slight voice says, behind a pair of bright red eyes- sharingan.

Upon waking, the part is greeted by Dr. Tamaishi, who seems a little less friendly than before…
“Well now, it certainly does seem like you’ve discovered something, haven’t you? Hohoho…. “ the portly man says, his face curled up in a unnatural grin….

Thinking as fast as possible, you make the signs for the Great Fireball. You inhale, then expel the great ball of flame- only to see it joined by another, presumably Itachi’s. The white cloud ignites and burns brightly as the fireballs pass through it; you cannot see if you hit Tamaishi or not.

“He’s… gone?!” Hinata yells, exasperated. She probably has her Byakugan activated- but if she cannot see him, then that means…

“He has to be below us! Everyone watch out!” you yell out in response.

A faint voice whispers into your ear…

“Aww, now you’re no fun. Ruining the surprise before the big show? Then die!”

You turn to see a smiling face leering at you- protruding from the wall. What?

In an instant, he’s upon you, with some great venus flytrap-like jaws!

You immediately roll out of the way, with him missing you by just a hair. He passes right through the floor- once again completely out of sight.
Itachi immediately takes control of the situation, issuing orders.

“Everyone! Outside now! We cannot fight him in this enclosed space!”

Everyone rushes outside, back towards the base of the tower.

Once there, you all begin to try and locate him, but to no avail. Eventually, he rises from the earth, the guise of Tamaishi completely gone. Though he’s at a considerable distance, you can still make him out- his body is all white, with a green head of hair. His body is covered in lines, zigzagging across his entire frame.

“The Star of the show makes his appearance! Trespassers! Witness the power our lady hath bestowed upon us! Arise, brothers! These interlopers wish to defile our sanctuary! Our time has come! Rise!” the man says, arms outstretched.

The wooden men and women on the ground begin to move! Slowly, at first, but sure enough, they begin to rise. As they do so, they begin to take on the white coloration, although many of them are not nearly as complete as he seems to be.

Your group immediately backs off towards the tower entrance, taking a defensive position around the entryway. These new threats surround you on three sides…. This will not be an easy fight.

Luckily these new creatures don’t seem to have the quickness the first one- or least, they don’t seem to. As they advance, each of your teammates takes them on.

You and Itachi immediately pair up, performing a student/teacher Great Fireball! The two techniques fire off, burning up several of the wooden creatures along the way.

At the same time, you can hear Hinata and Nori engaging in their own battles.

Nori has two chakra chains wrapped around her arms, and wielding them with great effectiveness. As the bladed tip of each chain collides with the enemy, a loud boom echos throughout the chamber- it seems like she’s using Wind chakra to amplify the power of her strikes; several of them bisect the wooden men entirely.

Hinata is using her Gentle Fist stance to great effectiveness, taking out several of the men as they approach. Her strikes are powerful- and even seem to be connecting at odd angles in a flurry of blows. These lesser monsters don’t stand a chance!

….However, the numbers of these monsters don’t seem to be thinning by much. As each one falls, another seems to be rising from the earth! You’ll need to do something eventually- as strong as you all are, you worry about being overwhelmed by sheer numbers….

You call out to Nori to create a gust of wind to help fuel a big fire technique- hopefully to put a big enough dent in their numbers to let you escape.

She nods, and both of you return to holding the line.

After a few moments, you hear her call out to you-

“It’s coming! Be ready princess, don’t let it knock you over!”

“Wind Release: Gale Palm!”

A strong blast of wind hits you from behind- and nearly bowls you right over. It’s hard to concentrate, but…

“Fire Release: Fire Dragon Bullet!”

You exhale a large gout of flame, and hold it for as long as your can. The result is a greatly magnified column of fire- burning all these plants to kindling.

The smell hits you first- burning wood. Smoke trails are pouring off of the remains, as the entire center column of wooden men have been burnt to ash.

Even now, though, you’re sure they’re still coming.

“Let’s head up the tower! We need to get out of here!” you shout to the group as new hands begin clawing out from the ash of their comrades.

After a few moments, the party agrees, and everyone starts to climb the tower. You’re all running as fast as you can- you doubt they’ll be far behind you.
You do have another worry, though- Kisame’s Partner, and his message.

There is another option- the room with the altar did have a second passage that presumably heads back to the surface- although you really don’t know if it does or not.

After a quick team conference, you all decide to take the second path. You cannot be sure how Kisame’s attack affected the ruins in the long term- best to avoid it all together.

The five of you round the altar. Tamaishi’s researcher is still lying face up upon it, the flowers still blooming as beautiful as before.

The new pathway continues down a long hallway- however, a new problem presents itself very quickly. The woodmen, with the extra time they had to catch up, are nipping at your heels.

“You won’t escape, interlopers!” the voice of “Tamaishi” says, echoing throughout the passage.

“Tsuki! They’re all around us! Expect-” Hinata is cut off as she dodges a razor-sharp root, shooting from one wall to the other.

“Run!”

The five of you take off down the hallway, dodging roots firing off at various intervals.

You four shinobi don’t have much issue dodging, as Hinata is able to trace the chakra signatures, but Lemeza…

You cast a quick glance to the Archaeologist. He’s taken a beating throughout this trip- various cuts and tears in his gear. You notice he seems to be clutching something for dear life- although you have no idea what it is. He dodges out from another root, but is just a bit too slow- it pierces his hat, pinning it to the wall.

“Shit! Let’s go, let’s go! I don’t want to die here!” the man says with panic as the five of you continue down the passage.

The hallway spills out into a large chamber, somewhat reminiscent of an arena. You’re immediately horrified by what you see- Tamaishi’s other two researchers, covered in the same flowers as before. Surely dead.

There’s one other oddity- a large whitish lump sits in the middle of the arena floor- it looks weathered, as if something was trying to destroy it, but was unable to. It’s just a bit larger than you, certainly human sized. What is it?

You know he’s right on your heels, but…

What IS this thing?

You run your hand along it- it makes a sound when you do so. It’s hollow?

“Hinata! Check this thing with your Byakugan!” you shout.

“Tsuki-hime please! We don’t have time for you to be investigating-” she turns to you with the Byakugan active. Still monitoring the wooden men, most likely.

“-what? There’s somebody in there? Well, I hope that they’re paying attention! We’re leaving! Right now!” She says, booking it to the other end of the arena.

There’s only two people unaccounted for….

You bang on the lump.

“Kurotsuchi! If that’s you in there, we’re leaving! I’d suggest you do the same!” you yell at the lump.

You feel a bit silly.

You wait a few precious moments, then take off towards the group. As you do the lump shatters with a thundering crash behind you.

“W-wait! Don’t leave me here with that thing! I didn’t know my client was a tree-monster! Waaaaait!” Kurotsuchi yells, chasing you with all speed.

You continue running at full speed, now in the connecting hallway leading away from the arena. The six of you come upon a tight spiralled staircase, somewhat reminiscent of the tower area deeper in the ruins. You round it’s folds quickly, as that taunting voice is audible again.

“You won’t escape us! Even if you get out, we’ll still follow you! You’ll let us loose upon the world! Hohohoho! Hahahahaha!”

You sweat you can almost hear them- moving and writhing in the walls behind you, but it’s likely your imagination.

The stairs spill out into a huge open area. There is a large chasm, spanned only by a rope bridge. It’s tied off at two columns on each end- likely something the researchers did, as it certainly doesn’t match the original construction.

It… doesn’t look very stable, though.

Nori is first across, seemingly have given caution to the wind.

You see Kurotsuchi fly past- literally fly. What?

You stand there stunned for a few moments, but ultimately decide to rush across yourself.

You run as hard as you can across, and you hear footsteps behind you. The bridge begins to sway precariously, but it seems to hold tight.

As you make to the opposite side, you turn to see Hinata, then Itachi. Lemeza is still on the bridge- and it’s swaying quite heavily. He’s still holding something tightly to his chest, and using one hand to hold himself steady.

“Lemeza! What are you doing! Let’s go!” you shout. Kurotsuchi has already taken off towards the entrance- not that you thought she’d wait.

“I-I’m coming. Just… give me a minute.” he sputters.

He’s coming, but slowly. He could go faster if he’d drop whatever he is carrying…

“Oho! Look! One of them is slowing down! Die, thief!” you hear the taunting voice shout.

You can see them- the wooden men. They’ve poured forth from the other entrance, and are rushing Lemeza.

“Nori! Catch Lemeza with your chains! I’m going to cut the bridge!” you order, unsheathing a sword.

“Are you sure? It’s gonna hurt him…” Nori says, her chains appearing on her wrists.

“Just do it! Hold on, Lemeza! You’re gonna feel this one!” You yell, slicing through the bridge supports.

As you do so, Nori fires off her chakra chains from behind a column, which wind themselves around Lemeza, biting into his skin. He grits his teeth, but otherwise doesn’t make a sound. As the bridge falls, his weight pulls on Nori, who has braced herself against the column. She growls angrily as she pulls the man up from his suspension over the abyss.

“You need to lose some weight, Doc.” Nori mutters as she pulls him up over the edge.

You help him up, and Nori releases the chains. Lemeza’s coat is shredded, and his arms and torso are bloody from where the spiked chains bit in. The doctor has definitely seen better days.

Everyone takes off running once more, though Lemeza is definitely slower than before.
“Come on, Doc! Hurry up! If that damn box is so important to you, you better at least make it out of this deathtrap, you know?!” Nori shouts from behind him.

This next hallway is rather short, quickly giving way to another chamber; this one very tall indeed. It’s lined with stone cylinders, covered with engravings of a flowering tree.

One of the cylinders is open.

With nothing specifically calling attention to this room, so you all run right through it, to the next set of stairs. Though you’re coming from the other side, it definitely looks familiar- these stairs connect to the three way split in the entrance hall!

You immediately round the final steps and turn left, running straight towards the entrance. You can even see the daylight filtering into the entryway….

Once outside, you immediately collapse on the sand. It’s warm, and the sun is nearly blinding- but you’re outside.

“Happy to be outside, genin?” Kurotsuchi says, from a perch slightly above where you are.

“It’s Tsuki. And yes, quite. I wasn’t counting on your client to be the dangerous one.” you say, still laying in a small heap.

As everyone gathers outside, everyone turns towards the entrance, to see if the wooden men will pour out.

Moments become minutes, which stretch even longer. Nobody comes out.

You certainly weren’t expecting what came next, however.

The ground begins to shake, and a different dull roar grows ever louder- before a bright blue missile flies directly through the roof of the ruins. It’s… water? They were boring through solid rock?

As it comes crashing down into the dunes, it kicks up a large cloud of sand, only for the water itself to somewhat mute the landing.

There stands Kisame Hoshigaki, holding his partner.

He sets the man down, and they dust each other off.

“Hey, hey! Shisui! Those zetsu were pretty annoying! I wonder if they have anything to do with our old flytrap-face? Although, they don’t look that much alike….” He says to man, who you assume to be Shisui, although he’s too busy staring directly at your group to answer.

“Shisui. I don’t know why you’re here, but you don’t need to involve any of them.” Itachi spits back at the robed man.

“I didn’t know you thought so little of me, Itachi. Attacking women and children? I’d truly become what the Leaf thinks of us, then, wouldn’t I? Hah!” Shisui leers back at your sensei.

“We’re here on business, nothing more. Although….” the robed man continues, pulling back his hood.

Uchiha hair and face, same color of eye- except for one. His right eye, which contained a sharingan of an odd shape- and it was active, while his other one was not. A wicked scar covered that same eye.

“My dear cousin, the people of Konoha consider us monsters. Look what they did to me! I served them faithfully, but yet in the end, I was pawn to be thrown aside!”

“Until you see this truth, you will be nothing but a pawn as well. I had hoped growing older would have opened your eyes- but it seems you have retained your ideals…..
