Humans run every which way, carrying papers and digital devices in their arms. Your drone walks through the chaos with a steady stride as it enters the war room on Odin station. It is filled with screens showing various Union news stations, local intelligence reports, and numerous astrographic data of the region. Most of the news feeds are either lifeless, or are showing some obvious filler story involving local politics or a rerun of the previous few hours of coverage. A select few, the ones not muted, show various buildings belonging to the Union BFI as agents rush in and out of the buildings.

“It is as yet unclear what the root cause is, be it a Commonwealth attack deeper into Union space than the recent strike, a more robust incursion from the machine intelligence of the Unity, or some other event.” One news caster says. “We as yet have no indication supporting or refuting any specific theory at the moment, however there is a compete media blackout. The government has shut down almost every interstellar communication relay available, and there are reports of fleet assets moving to high alert across the system. The PDF has already secured major spaceports and are ordering an evacuation of all buildings within a ten block radius of local anti-orbital defense installations.” The reporter continues. Behind her is the entrance to the Parliament building, swarming with local PDF troops as barricades raise up from the street at regular intervals and a hovering tank slowly props itself up on several hydraulic legs. A PDF trooper shouts at her and several of them quickly move in, batting away the camera that cuts to static.

Drones stream into the facility, cutting down guards as they fire into the seething swarm of chitin and blades surging towards them. You are growing closer, the source of the psionic signal and the gravitational distortions both coming from the pit in the center of the chamber before you. The readings become stronger, gradually but steadily, and with it, your connection to your drones begins to feel fainter, their minds struggling to hear you through the growing static of psionic interference.

Elizabeth stands on the bridge of your ship in orbit, watching the complex mosaic, given meaning only by the context provided by her own mental connection, and listening to the silent, mental battlecries of your warriors.

"Whatever he's doing, he's trying to speed it up. I'm not sure if the drones will be able to keep their connections at this rate." She says. You are unsure, but your drones are indeed slowing down in the mild confusion of the interference. "I should get to the surface. At the very least I can help organize things."

Drones may have trouble this close to the crystal. Hopefully Theseus will be more competent if our drones start failing.. Of course, Big Momma may be able to help out our drones significantly depending on our rolls. I still think (and presumably agree) we have under-utilized human and hybrid brains. For example, non-psionically connected brains would have been able to detect the invisible natives on refuge. If we equip more drones with the ability to independently deal with problems (even beyond what a quantum thinker may be capable of), it could greatly increase our ability to pursue independent projects and rely on non-thinker insights.

>>48301167
Good idea for the future. In areas with crystal contamination we can have certain drones sever their connection to the hive and only respond to radio commands. It would greatly lower the rate of (or risk of) void god contamination.

I'm actually a bit glad the marines did not witness our drones becoming disoriented and confused by exposure to the artifact and psionic interference. It could give the Union some very dangerous inferences about what our weaknesses are and why we actually decided to intervene. They may have thought that we only intervened to keep the Union from discovering a weapon that could effectively break down the hive order as opposed to for its destructive potential. However, if containment really is lost, I will certainly greatly regret not having decided to keep the marines on hand.

"Have the drones push as far as they can until the interference becomes too much. I'll lead a swarm in myself." She says as she runs a wall that flexes open for her, and makes her way to a waiting shuttle filled with heavy warriors, wasps, and ghost beetles.

On the planet below, your drones continue to push forward, the warriors struggling to process everything around them through the haze of the interference. As they continue to press into the growing meat grinder, you have more of your ghost beetles move in along the flanks, scaling the walls and ceiling as the guards fall back to the choke point of the inner facility's entrance.

"I don't like the idea of you being so vulnerable." Elizabeth says as her shuttle departs. You feel dumbstruck at the comment.

"I'm fine. My alterations are more than just implants. I could hardly be considered human anymore with how much alterations my genetic structure has undergone. I have some theories I'd like to test out in that regard, but you, if whatever Emmerich is doing takes hold, your fleet could turn into a lighting rod. You have way too many relays here. Any mental attack would have a direct route to you."

"The fleet must be controlled." You say.

"Then keep one in the flagship of the fleet." She says. "But you don't need to do everything yourself."

Disable all relays. Allow Theseus to send commands to our ships via radio and to transmit data and images by the same medium. There is no need for us to risk relays in this arena.

It minimizes risk to us. We have far more fleets even if Theseus were to use his monopoly over communication against us (which he wouldn't do).

You know, Elizabeth makes a good point. We've put way, way too many relays in our ships, when operating as a fleet that is nothing but a crippling weakness considering our enemies. All it takes is a single ship to get caught in a takyonic jamming field and our entire network goes down, everywhere.

>>
>>48301482
We can include a time limit. They will only do this for 12 hours before returning to Mother.

And this is just the kind of thing FTLComms with Thinkers on the other end are useful for.

They're the ultimate backup. No trust required in a third party.
>>
>>48301376
>>48301417
Sadly, that is not biologically possible, as drones recognize their queen or friendly hive intelligences by the hive network. Radio, or any other non-psionic transmission method can send the fact ammount of data that is processed by a drone as it exports its higher brain functions to the rest of the hive. A thinker could be ordered to recognize a person and follow their commands, but such a command structure would be difficult at best, as the non-thought based communication lacks the detail the thinker otherwise uses to establish its standing orders.

Your drones cannot be hacked or tricked into serving anyone else, but they also can't be made to directly accept orders through non-psionic means. Thinkers can carry out orders without a queen's constant presence, and be told to follow the mental orders of another friendly, related queen or, in your case, psionic individual, but they would still struggle to parse out the details of anyone's verbal commands due to a perceived lack of detail and context.

Okay.... Fair enough.

In that case I suggest we can give thinkers standing orders to GTFO unless countermanded by Elizabeth. Elizabeth herself can probably hitch a ride with Theseus if needed (I doubt he'd abandon his Mom to the void god), so even if her psionic abilities are disrupted we won't lose her abilities or resourcefulness altogether.
>>
>>48301632
That or just find away to have the stronger psychic powers so it's the other guys that have to worry about it
>>
>>48301632

>Psionic fortification
A strange mixture of organic components assembled into a crystalline matrix, the strange white crystals not only can serve as a kind of memory storage device, but also as a component in a psionic relay. When incorporated into a drone, it replaces the portion of the brain maintaining the psionic link to the queen and serves as a mixture of fuse and signal booster, allowing the relay to broadcast to drones suffering from psionic jamming, and can protect itself from jamming by cutting off its ability to receive thoughts.
The process of installation does not cost anything, but requires a white crystal be implanted into the selected relay to function.

Cool. I had forgotten about that. Aren't white crystals (a necessity for psionic fortification) a highly limited resource, though? Do we have enough to equip our entire fleet with them.
>>
>>48301656
Not true. Their range is shortened. Otherwise several options QD gave us wouldn't have made sense. Like

>Activate your psionic disruptor and send in ghost beetles under thinker command

Not to mention he explained this.
>>48001027
> Thinkers are able to command drones to a very, very limited extent while being jammed, and such commands are iffy and unreliable at best as it essentially just tries to shout over the jammer at the other drones, typically with mixed results. Moderate relays will have greater success, but are limited to tactical range, essentially, and can only effectively communicate with drones within the immediate area. Advanced relays become largely non-functional, and essentially shut down to avoid spreading the jamming signal to the rest of the hive.

So a Thinker with a moderate relay is decent at controlling a squad of drones.
>>
>>48301341
>Disable the relays in your fleets, save for one

"If you think anything bad is about to happen, destroy the relay." Elizabeth says. "I can get back to the ship and even if I can't get through the interference the ship's should return on their own."

You ponder the idea of giving over your forces to your shipboard thinkers, and simply watching the events unfold from Theseus's server ships, although doing so would make you blind to the psionic signals within and render you ignorant to the vast majority of the events unfolding. As Theseus continues to have his own mechanical drones systematically purge the facility, you become keenly aware of his blindness to the true danger of this base. An ignorance that likely ensures his safety for the moment, but prevents him from being able to offer any real assistance at the moment, his drones being unable to sense or interact with the mounting danger. You don't like the idea of watching, being unable to interact with the battle or even witness the most critical parts of it, but it may at least offer some additional insurance in the event of failure.

Give thinkers standing orders to destroy the relay unless they receive a countermanding order every 10 seconds. A temporary disruption shouldn't lead to a total loss of command and control, but anything longer and we risk the entire relay network potentially.

The doors to the shuttle flex open, and Elizabeth leaps out in the low gravity, quickly carrying herself along with her weaver limbs as her escort charges in with her. A moment later, the marine shuttle lifts off nearby, quickly accelerating into orbit.

Your drones struggle to reach your mind, their vision cloudy to you as they charge into the inner facility. It is a brightly lit room, filed with various instruments and devices, but the details are lost to you as your drones struggle with the guards. Your ghost beetles are poised to strike as your warriors have reached the edge of where their minds remain competent, and await your command to dive into the dark, lonely void outside of their mother's guiding mental influence. You can feel it. A twinge of fear in their thinker minds. Injury, death, the unknown, all of them meaningless concepts, but to leave the queen, even for a moment, is the only thing that could ever make your children hesitate. They steel themselves for that loneliness.

They still have very basic abilities to communicate with each other outside of psionic links right? Primary command is still to shut down the reactor safely if at all possible. Your drones climb along the exterior shell of the facility, quickly finding a mixture of sealed doors and scaffolding mixed with various ventilation shafts and maintenance corridors. The chamber is like a building built within a building, the shell of power conduits and layered metal struts offering a tight squeeze as your ghost beetles work their way through the maze of small chambers and air vents, and they flicker, and then fade from your mind as the growing psionic signal's deafening cry drowns out their thoughts. Outside, at the door the guards are using as a choke point for your drones, you exchange fire with the humans. Chitin slugs and metal shards fly past each other in a brutal exchange of fire.

Elizabeth makes her way to the outer chamber, and quickly closes in to the door, her mind granting you some level of view of the foggy, static filled space within, offering some relief to your drones in their attempt to hear their mother.

"I think I can already confirm one theory of mine." She says. "The implants that give me the same abilities as a relay also seem to be fortified, at least partially, against psionic disruption." She closes in and sends a heavy warrior ahead, its bulk shrugging off the attacks of the guards within as wasps swarm out from behind it. She quickly leaps forward and takes cover behind the heavy warrior as it marches forward.

The room ahead is a circular chamber, lined with regulators and control panels covered in various readouts and subsystems. All of it is directed over a large pit, its sloping wall flowing down to the floor where an arrangement of machines is placed around a large, metallic sphere. The sphere itself exudes psionic energy, its metal casing spinning rapidly in a projected magnetic field that holds it suspended in the air. Around it, other spherical devices are situated, the light bending slightly around them as they twist spacetime as lighting arcs between their magnetic rings.

She turns her attention back to the battle as several guards fall back to another line of cover, and the minds of several ghost beetles echo through the static disruption.

"Kill things! Kill for Mother!"

There is a flash, a momentary blur of motion as several forms flash out from the ceiling on top of the guards. There is a momentary scream as their tails whip up and then down, ripping through the armor to the soft flesh beneath and spraying blood across the consoles around them. Another guard turns around, taking aim to the drones and sends a quick burst of fire in their direction, ripping into the carapace of one drone's tail as it pulls its bloodied maw free of the gaping hole in the armor and chitters in rage.

As the guard fires again, a lender, spear like limb comes down on his shoulder, and another two through the torso as Elizabeth brings her limbs striking down on the guard. The human turns to look, his arm swinging his weapon in her direction as she grips his wrist, crushing the cluster of bones with a loud popping noise as if bringing a bag of potato chips, and pulls him in closer. A short, conical spray of acid erupts from her mouth with a short hiss and she spins him around as his helmet begins to melt inwards, holding his impaled torso up as makeshift cover as she charges the distance of open ground to a wall of computer terminals ahead, and then tosses the flailing, smoking body into the guards ahead. As she slides behind the computer terminals, the ghost beetles charge ahead, quickly bringing their mandibles up and into their soft, poorly armored throats and throwing them to the ground with a wet, gurgling thud.

It's "possible" that the misfire was really just a misfire caused by stress and hair trigger weapons. Proper paranoia dictates, however, that we thoroughly examine all survivors for taint before release.

She's admitted she doesn't really see herself as human anymore, and she's got most if not all the stuff she wants and needs with us.

I think she's losing a majority of her sense of empathy when it comes to humanity in any manner that's not purely scientific.

Also these guards are infested so she doesn't want to take chances.
>>
>>48302663
Good point. I feel we should mention to her that she still is human, her augs and the impact of her growing her own medium relay. That really only effected a small region of her tissue and genetic code, the rest of it definitively human. I mean, for her own mental well being, this sort of change in mental image away from her entire species can't be attributed entirely to her implants.

She runs forward, passing the drones with her limbs clattering along the metal floor, gliding her body through the air light flight in the low gravity. A guard swings his weapon up to face her, firing as one of her limbs spears both arms together and jerks the weapon to the side, firing it into a computer terminal, and she unsheathes her claws, digging both deep into the human's throat, lifting him into the air and sending him arcing away in the low gravity, trailing blood as he falls in slow motion as your drones swarm over him.

The rest of the ring of consoles and control panels loops around, tracing the chamber of the reactor to a small, sealed office on the far side of the ring. Elizabeth spits acid along the hinges, and a heavy warrior grips it in its claws, ripping it clean from the wall as she moves in flanked by your ghost beetles.

Standing calmly behind a desk is a man in a dark blue skinsuit. He holds a pistol in his hand, but at his side, hanging by his hip. His mind flutters from topic to topic, like a radio with a broken dial, his signals impossible to read coherently. He looks at Elizabeth with mild concern, and places the pistol on the desk.

"So, you're here to kill me." He says. "And you clearly don't need a gun to do that." He adds as he looks to her clawed hands slowly drip with dark crimson over the green muscle fibers of her arms. Her weaver limbs twitch to a threatening posture, pointing to him as they coil and tense, and her antennae flicker along her scalp within her hair.

Honestly, I'd disagree in that. IIRC, mice and chimpazees both have technically very minor genetic differences in relation to humans. A little goes a long way.

"You know full well this is on your head. Their minds are already long gone." She says.

"But their spirits were pure." He says quietly.

"How do I shut down the reactor?" Elizabeth asks quickly. Emmerich simply lowers himself into his seat, and grabs a small glass from his desk. "Winston!" She shouts. He looks up, a crack running along the class in his hand.

"Patience is a virtue." He says. "Although your tone certainly does bring back memories. Your fall certainly did nothing to help your temperament."

"You don't have any idea what you're doing!" She says. "I don't want to risk making things worse by blowing it up, so tell me how to shut it down, or I'll-"

"What, read my mind? Rip the thoughts right out of my puny little brain?" He interrupts. "That is doubtful. You see, while you have taken the path of darkness, I have seen the light. A terrible fall before the great return."

"I don't have time for this. I didn't have time for your nonsense when humanity wasn't about to be destroyed, and I certainly don't have time for it now." Elizabeth says as she begins to move towards Emmerich. He places his glass on the table calmly.

"You think you are fighting for humanity, while drenched in the blood of your fellow humans?" He says. "And you used to call me hypocritical. No, you have chosen your path, you have taken of the forbidden fruit and-" Elizabeth brings her weaver arm out and it lands firmly in Emmerich's shoulder, pinning him to the wall that sends a large replica painting of some ancient religious scene smashing to the ground in slow motion. He lets out a shout of agony.

"Any other day I would be willing to at least humor you," Elizabeth says, "but not today." Emmerich clenches his teeth as he looks down at her.

"You seek to deny humanity their salvation!" He says.

I already voted, but guys, reading his mind is an obvious trap. He clearly knows about the psionic potential for us to "rip thoughts from his puny little mind." He is also clearly such a slave he would have no problem sacrificing himself for the void god. If his mind could be read successfully in order to shut off the reactor safely than he would have killed himself to prevent that knowledge from getting out. The drones tear into the room, ripping through desk drawers and cracking open filing cabinets, finding seemingly endless mad scribblings of text and sketches of indecipherable meaning as Elizabeth quickly begins looking through the computer terminal in Emmerich's desk. The holographic screen displays innumerable files and folders.

"I suspect you're mind is so far gone I may as well gaze directly into a Void shard." She says as she skims the folders as quickly as she can. Emmerich laughs as he holds the spear of a limb pinning him to the wall behind her.

"The wicked always fear looking into the light. It reveals their sins." He says with shallow breath. "I pity you, I really do, but someone had to fill the role and fall to the darkness for the second time, and from your wicked consorting with the demons, I will break the seals, and call forth the end of this fallen world." He lets out a quick shout of pain as Elizabeth adjusts the limb in his shoulder, and he continues. "All of the fallen worlds. Don't you see? This is a good thing! Wars and rumors of wars, the horsemen on the march across the stars! This is the time! It was always meant to be opened here and now! Ah!" He shouts again as the arm twists sharply in his shoulder again.

"Here." Elizabeth says quickly as a holographic schematic appears in the air above the desk. "What even gave you this idea?" She asks as she reads over the data. Emmerich smirks with the pride of pious humility.

"How did Noah know how to build the ark?" He says.

A pain shoots through the minds of you and Elizabeth both, and she turns to the window to look at the reactor below. The floating sphere in the center opens, sliding into a lotus as the segments fall away, spinning faster as they do so, revealing the shimmering, ever moving Void shard within. It seems to crack, creaking as parts of it reach out, growing, expanding in small, sudden bursts of growth like roots of black obsidian. In the center, deep within, further than it should be able to go, there is a distant presence. I faint thought from a mind, rushing closer.

"We don't have much time left. The power taps need to be shut down, I have the sequence here!" Elizabeth thinks, calling to your drones as the shutdown sequence runs through her mind. It is lengthy, but even the slightest misstep could send the singularities critical. "If those things go off, I have no idea what would happen. It may shut it down, it may rip open a hole in spacetime, there's no way to tell, but we would at least be able to do it faster." She adds, sensing your reservation on the matter.

Considering the integral role the hive has played in the evolution of humanity, and our Mother's virtually unmatched psionic abilities (implanting desire to build the Psionic Cannon and care for the relay to Commenwealth scientists), I don't think Emmerich really wants a serious answer to that question.

"Each one is a heavily modified power tap, using far more canderon at a much more unsafe level of output, with each one existing in an overlapping gravity field focused on the center. If we power them down separately, the whole thing will rip apart and who knows what will happen. They need to be stepped down gradually simultaneously." She says. There is a loud, sharp ping, like a cracking of glass, and the crystal of the void shard begins to crack across its surface. A small sliver falls inward, falling into an endless void as if a universe existed in the tiny object, and there is a sudden sound of wailing. The windows of the inner facility shatter, the shards flying in and around the reactor as the human technicians below begin to stammer, and then collapse to the floor. More slivers begin to fall inward into the shard as it crumbles into itself, slowly expanding, as if leaking shadow.

"Where's Theseus?" Elizabeth shouts over the deafening noise. "His drones aren't affected, he could help!"

I won't want to trust our drones with perfect technical coordination with communication failing. If Elizabeth thinks Theseus can help (and has time to get there), that's good enough for me.

We can still move our drones into position to start shutting things down, right? If Theseus takes too long to arrive (for whatever reason), I hope we will still be able to pull off an extemporaneous shutdown.

The mechanical drones rush through the burning and crumbling rubble of the facility around you, moving as quickly as their mechanical legs and pulse jets can take them. They arrive, guided by your drones to the required locations as Elizabeth explains the task.

All the while, the shard continues to spin, its surface rippling as slivers of itself wall into the growing maw. Slender wires of twisting nothingness reach out, grasping at the air around it as the bodies of the humans lift up and begin to stream into the gaping maw, their bodies eroding as they pass the threshold as if decomposing to dust in seconds. Deep within, further down than you care to look within the opening maw, is a light, faint and miniscule but growing.

The mechanical drones take their places, quickly cycling through the stages of shutdown, steadily decreasing the gravitational distortions in perfect synchronization as your drones slowly begin to collapse. Elizabeth examines one of your warriors, sending her thoughts through its mind only to receive static. Another stumbles, struggling to focus on your thoughts, until its thoughts begin to meld, jumbling into a blur of drunken nonsense, and it collapses, its mind winking out of your consciousness. Others begin to drop to the floor, some twitching madly, others screaming with alarm as their minds claim to feel the intruding mind of a rival hive, the inexorable sensation of a command from something that is not their mother sending them into a debilitating fury. A ghost beetle finds itself inching closer, its limbs twitching back and forth as it becomes unsure of what to do with its current orderless state of inaction, and there is a soft pop, and it drops to the ground like a puppet tossed to the floor, the contents of its quantum brain oozing through several splits in the carapace of its head.

"Get the shuttle ready." Elizabeth says as she begins to retreat to the outer doors. The drones attempt to follow, most of them tripping or reducing ot a pathetic crawl, while others twitch on their backsides as their legs together with their last moments, their simple minds trying to grip to what they believe is a spinning room, whirling around them as their minds crumble and wink out. As the last few of your drones begin to fade, you see something, a shape, like a face begin to emerge from the gaping maw of the crystal as the threshold begins to slowly shrink as the gravitation decreases. A silvery, sleek form reaches out, its shape shifting into strange contortions that don't seem to be possible, moving in impossible directions and illogical shapes that are fundamentally wrong.

Elizabeth reaches the shuttle, leaping into it almost before the seal of its umbilical cuts away, the door sealing inches behind her.

"What about Emmerich?" Theseus asks. His words are relayed to Elizabeth.

"Forget him! Just get us out of here and shut down that reactor!" She shouts as the shuttle lurches into the air and quickly accelerates to orbit.

The horrific, twisting fluid, like flowing mercury, begins to reach out, its form growing hands and claws and tentacles and wings, thrashing and probing at the air around it. Several robotic drones open fire, their lasers lashing out to the silvery skin, and twisting along it like a reflection, tracing its form until a mouth forms along its surface and the light arcs back from the momentary maw, lancing the drone in half.

Along the top of the twisting shape, something like a drill forms, with too many sides and not enough edges, and begins ripping through the ceiling with incredible speed as hypervelocity anti-armor slugs impact its strange, perfectly reflective hide, halting in an instant and dropping to the ground without so much as a ripple.

A moment later, the top of the the facility explodes, blossoming like a flower as the growing shape stretches up like a massive plant, reaching to the sky. Mouths open along its surface in silent screams, and beams of light lance out, slicing at the swarming Skyl ships and Unity cruisers. A beam of white light reaches out, burning through the several meter thick hull of the damaged server ship, slowly tracing a line from one corner to the other before the entire ship separates, slowly drifting apart into two halves, freezing and burning gasses bleeding from within as the crumbling hull segments pour unity drones across space.

More faces begin to form, contorting in agony as they melt and twist across the surface of the ever moving shape, and it begins to erode away, lurching back sharply as if tugged by some other force. Arms form, reaching out and clawing at the ruined frame of the facility and dragging chunks with it as it falls in and away, the reactor reduced to a single, shrinking point of light glowing like a star in the reactor chamber before vanishing into the imploding facility.

You detect no traces of gravitational distortions. Even the psionic presence of the shard is gone. The small dwarf is silent once more, the server ships scrambling to salvage the two drifting halves slowly bleeding to death in orbit.

Somewhere deep in the recesses of your mind, like a distant memory somehow forgotten, you can feel it. A weight, as if something were pressing down upon you. A gnawing, pestering itch inside your mind, granting no information and making no demands, save for one, all too clear understanding.

Something is watching.

Your fleets begin their withdrawal. Your craft take what their holds can carry from the server ship wreckage, passing them along and dumping them into Zero One for recovery. Cruisers do the same, shoveling scrap and semi-functional server banks into the two remaining server ships until their holds are full, and they consume the rest, projecting their singularities over the drifting hull fragments until only a cloud of debris remains, and they fold space out of the sunless system.

Your forces quickly dwindle to the minimum, a small fleet watching over the orbiting marine transport. The crew wait in somber silence, their bridge having displayed the events on the surface on the tactical displays.

>>48303806
>>Release the crew and let the ship go on its way
The Void God just made our argument that the humans were out of their depth more effectively than we ever could. The crew will certainly be placed under immense security and quarantine when they return to the Union.
>>
>>48303772
Salvage time. Get everything we can from the facility before the humans get here and don't forget the lithovores. Never not the time for SCIENCE!
Also inform the injured queen and the Commonwealth about what happened. We really need to speed up our psionic research and see if we can find a way to protect and fortify our mental signals against void crystal infection. Or is that counter-productive and the better at psionics we become the more vulnerable we are to them? Theseus and the humans seem to be somewhat more resistant so our best bet currently against them is using a proxy war to fight them while we support from the back/sidelines until we can figure out a way to protect ourselves.

Your speaker turns around, facing the human crew as they gaze slack jawed at the tactical screen.

"The situation has been fixed." It chirps simply. The warriors quickly release their grip on the human crew members and quickly begin to leave, departing the marine transport as the small marine shuttle docks with it, and it quickly begins to accelerate as quickly as it is able.

Gilliam watches with confused horror as the facility explodes with the entity's emergence, and with sudden anti-climax the feed cuts out as Windsor slams his hand over a control, replacing the images with the large seal of the Secretary of Intelligence.

I think that's all for tonight, although I'll stick around a bit before falling asleep at the keyboard for any questions, feedback, ect.

I just had to take in just much we've managed to fuck up in a single thread.

Our existence is exposed in full to the union. They've seen our warriors and the speaker, they know where we live now, that we were probably responsible for the Mirage, and that we're all over their systems thanks to our FTL methods being seen.

This comes on top of us completely and utterly failing to stop a void incursion into this reality. It KNOWS us now it has SEEN it. This is the one great horror that doomed all of our predecessors, every one.

Our entire cover allowing us to quietly and secretly build up an armada has just been torn to shreds in two threads. I don't know if we're going to able to fully recover from this.
>>
>>48303870
Hey, I voted to shut down all relays and rely on Liz and Theseus to handle this but got outvoted. Not much I can do about that.

Once we salvage what we safely can, we need to build the planet killer warhead just to erase any remnants of the Void on Nowhere.
>>
>>48303806

The entire ship was just exposed to impossibly dangerous entities and was boarded by a virtually unknown alien species. They're going to be spending the next few months in quarantine while the brass tries to sort all this out.
>>
>>48303889

I agree with killing killinger, but i just want to invade the union, dismantle it's government, and put the commonwealth/Theseus in charge at this point.
Can we offer heretic and Theseus joint psyonic cannon research next thread?
And tell the commonwealth we will be joining their war because the union just preformed the greatest heresy in the universe.
>>
>>48303893
>they know where we live now
We could create the illusion of different hives, so they think it's a different hive from the one that attacked

>>
>>48303889
This thread was pure distilled awesome. Thanks so much.

What would we have had to roll to stop the incursion altogether? Would that even have been potentially possible given how long we took to land troops? No pressure if you want to keep the crunch secret.

Can you give us any hints about what we (or our thinkers) might expect now that the Void God has become aware of us?

The only path to success now is to completely conquer our enemies, focus everything into the psyonic cannon and hope our empire is big enough we can build one on time.

>>48303938
>I won't be able to get any more of the star charts set up in time for Sunday.
There's no rush, these current events are more important. You can do them once all these current story threads die down a bit, then the star charts become more relevant as we begin exploring and investigating the new systems. We won't be able to do that now anyway.
>>
>>48303960
This thread please, or we can hold it on both threads to make sure.
>>
>>48303960

I think now is litteraly the worst time to start on the cannon, now that the eye of the void lingers on us.
>>
>>48303897
>>48303910
The crew should be safe from infection, it's the ground troops that might be infected. We need to somehow warn everyone to kill Emmerich on sight. Especially the Union. If he gets loose and starts infecting the Union, that would cause us long term trouble.
We could get Theseus to broadcast the entire operation throughout Union space, that should make everyone aware of what's going on and stop Killinger and co from taking advantage of this.
>>
>>48303947
I do try to at least get any that are important done first, still a shame though.

>>48303949

>>48303952
They are resistant, and long term exposure causes eventual death, but even your mother was able to manipulate humans in the short term.
>>
>>48303974
We help off psyonic cannon research cause we might have attracted the void god's attention, now we have it so we might as well start.
>>
>>48303952
Resistant, not immune. They have a much harder time processing any psionic influences.

Think of it like electricity. The hive is like metal, easily conductive and you can pass signals along. Humanity is more of an insulator, it tries to stop those signals. And if you try to just force more through, it tends to destroy the material.
>>
Welp, things certainly got out of our claws. No more time for sneaky, lets put on our "ancient and mysterious aliens" role. We gotta bluff and act more terrifying than before.

>>48303952
Was wondering same, seems like their resistance has limits too.
>>
>>48303974
The Void's eye will never go away. We are immortal but even we can't play the waiting game here. The longer we wait now the greater risk there will likely be.
>>
>>48303945
Firstly, that sort of ability is far beyond what we are capable of.

Secondly, they know we have cloaking now, which they were aware of being used in the Mirage incident. They will also realize those deep space explosions they were seeing in the Toliman system look exactly like our ships exiting their FTL drive. They'll figure out is was us easily.

>>
>>48304029
Oh yea, we can also ask the Commonwealth if they would like to join the joint research.
>>
What about the fact the void could stop us from watching them? If we could figure that out...
>>
>>48303990
Indeed. We can say something to the Commonwealth like "We had hoped there would be more time to get to know each other, but the Union's stupidity has made time a prescious commodity we can no longer afford. The end of the world is coming, and only united can we avert it." (and then ask for psionic cannon details).
>>
>>48304035
But that will only fool anything less psycicly advanced then us, which sadly does not include the void gods.

Yeah. I think we should build up some immolation warheads and launch pre-emptive attacks all across the OQ's empire. She will be coming for us hard, probably as the first attack wave, and we need to take out her infrastructure advantage or we will probably lose.
>>
>>48304058
A full blown invasion is dumb, we don't have the resources for that, and diverting our resources to an unnecessary war that we could be using to strengthen and expand and eventually have a full blown war against Obsidian Queen and then the Void Crystals directly is just a bad idea. Think long term. War with the Union now gains us nothing.

Force is the least efficient and most costly application of power. Maybe we should just show up with a huge fleet, furious at their near destruction of the sector, and demand they return our ancient worlds (the expanse) before we turn their capital into slag. The expanse is not particularly valuable to the Union, they cannot afford a 2 (or 3 or 4) front war, and they know there's bigger fish to fry. We have a good chance of getting concessions from them without firing a shot.
>>
>>48304095
We have our allies to help us quickly take some worlds from the expanse, which we can use for resources and focus on keeping aunty away until Theseus/Commonwealth deal the finishing blow to the union.

I'm talking about the Void. Even the White Queen was surprised when they showed up and they took thousands of years to kill her.
>>
>>48304207
Didn't they come after all their slaves were defeated? Doesn't that mean we have to build it before we exhaust OQ's and the cepth's space navy?
>>
Guys, I think we just jumped toward the end of the quest. Now that the void itself has awoke and is aware of us, we're inevitably going to get attacked by it and it's proxies. We've just cut out possible courses of the quest that would have allowed us to conquer the OQ world by world, or figured out where the Ceph homeworld is and destroy it, or negotiate with the Union and Commonwealth on our terms. We're not going to get another chance to do such things.
>>
>>48304229
It took the Void 1000 years to find and kill the WQ.
We should have at least a year to prepare. Which means we'll need to blitz the Scavs to earn the Commonwealth's trust, and also grind BQ down to nothing in a year. Hard, but doable.

Also, we should see what the Hermit Queen has to say about the serious shit we just witnessed.
>>
>>48304256
All good calls. I'd say giving us a full year may be a bit optimistic, but that we don't need to go FULL panic mode just yet, (although some degree of panicking is necessary and warranted). We need to consult with our allies, engage in more diplomatic contact with new governments, and generally transition towards full wartime production. We should probably start at least hit and run attacks against OQ and her infrastructure within the week.
>>
I just got here
holy shit
>>
>>48304229
Pretty much this, we lost our advantages so we have to completely change our long term strategy.
>>48304256
But why did it take so long? Is the void god a lazy shit that only comes when it's slaves are defeated? Can it only manifest in specific circumstances? Did mom stall it for 1000 years in who knows what way?
Hopefully we have 1 year like you said but we shouldn't waste it just because we have it.
>>48304291
Agreed, consult allies, ask them if we should invade and take over the union worlds, use them to focus on our void war.
>>
>>48304306
>>
>>48304320
>But why did it take so long?

I think it's a combination of only being 'summonable' in certain conditions, and that mom stalled it with the Psionic Cannon.

The source seems to be the void crystals. The enemy can most easily make its influence felt through those.
>>
>>48304291
The Black Queen is easy to shutdown if we can attack her homeworld. Also they are only going to attack us directly while or after researching the cannon.
>>
>>48304320
It's more like they only attack personally if it directly threatens them from what we've seen.
>>
>>48304334
And the cepth ships, which will come to attack us, all have void crystals.
>>48304356

>>
>>48304485
The thread actually was announced on Twitter and in the last thread.

No question, though, it is a major game changer.
>>
I'm actually really happy that we've broken stealth to the Union. Now we'll be able to dial the paranoia back a bit, it was getting a bit out of control with all the increasingly panicked responses to increasingly trivial crumbs of information that we let slip.
>>
I have an idea, we discuss with Theseus and heretic a plan to invade the union as a last resort, open diplomacy and crash killinger's popularity and pray that when the cyclist preacher gets elected he realizes the void god ain't his god, depending on him we make the final choice on whether we should take over the union or not.
>>
Guys, we should see if we can find a way to purge our connection to the void gods in the queens mind. E.g. turning off our connection to everything for a short period of time or some such.
>>
>>48304673
your solution to an otherworldly taint from a being beyond our comprehension is to turn ourselves off and on again?
>>
Whoo boy. That was one hell of a ride. I'm predicting that OQ and Ceph raiders will amp up their raids on us, or our allies' assets in the near future. Then there's the Scavs we promised the Commonwealth to sweep. Let's just hope they (and the humans) don't mess up shit while we go on the warpath against the Obsidian Void.

Also on the subject of Theseus being immune to the Void, we could hatch some plans with him. Contingency plans. Such as if we get infected by the Void. Could we give him our DNA data so he could clone us from the purge he'll give to us if we're tainted? We did the same for the Skyl, maybe Theseus and Heretic could do the same to us.

Of course, here's hoping we don't get tainted, now or in the future.
>>

We haven't tainted yet. Only seen.

Don't even need to go that far, slow boating the pod in from a light-day away works just fine. But yeah, the blink drive was always going to be discovered. Jesus Christ, this thread could not possibly have turned out worse if the playerbase was actively trying to sabotage it. Is this how the quest ends? With the Red Queen taken apart and corrupted by the void gods?
>>
>>48304931
That's what inevitably happens to anyone who sees them. The Black Queen only had to glimpse them for a moment, just briefly, to fall to it's influence and become the Obsidian Queen.

And now we've seen them.

We don't know how long it takes for them to completely dominant a queen's mind, but as we saw with the BQ/OQ, it took many years allowing her to conspire against the other queens and lure them into a trap. She likely spent years steadily becoming more and more dependent on their guidance, probably not even directly aware of what she was experiencing for the first stages. I'm now really worried that's going to happen to us. If the Red Queen began to experience brief glimpses of what cannot be, growing impulses to completely exterminate any competing civilizations, and ever increasingly paranoia how long would it take for her to notice it?
>>
>>48305674
At this point we may as well have a daughter and hand over everything to her, including the quest PoV

>>
>>48305541
>>48305674
>>48305830
You guys realize we closed the portal before they could corrupt us.
>>
>>48305830
>>48305674
>>48305874
Where the fuck did this come from?

You do realize the Mother managed to deal with this shit for over 50,000 years?
>>
>>48305877
>>48305889
We are corrupted. It's over. Mother is going to lose her mind in the worst ways possible and the only hope there is is to create a new Mother.

RIP HQQ I guess
>>
>>48305913
So you are just retarded. Because if you were right then we lost when the quest began.
>>
>>48305933
No, the quest began on the only hope clause I'm presenting now.

You shouldn't project your retardation on others while failing at reading a very short and simple sentence.
>>
>>48305877
But we didn't. The portal was open for more than long enough for Them to see us, and that's all it will take. Remember what the barren queen said to us, that to be seen you must first see them. Well, that's happened, now the eldritch horror that our entire species was wiped out by has personally noticed us.

This was the endgame we've been fighting to avoid this entire quest. This is what caused the deaths of every single one of old queens. All of them. This is what our mother tossed us out into the void with no memory of her to avoid. This is the reason we've never built the psionic cannon, and why the White Queen went so far as to engineer an entire species to be blind just so they could test the cannon 50,000 years later. We can't interact with or observe Them without them responding in turn, and now that's just happened.
>>
You guys seem to be treating this as the worst possible outcome, but we stopped the thing. We are just being watched. Could've been a lot worse. From what I understand they can't directly attack us unless we try to attack them via psionic cannon. We've seen them, they see us. However they seem to only be able act through their slaves and crystals unless we do something to directly affect them
>>
>>48305877
>Somewhere deep in the recesses of your mind, like a distant memory somehow forgotten, you can feel it. A weight, as if something were pressing down upon you. A gnawing, pestering itch inside your mind, granting no information and making no demands, save for one, all too clear understanding.

>Something is watching.

You were saying?
>>
>>48305913
Are you retarded? The White Queen was at an even bigger risk of being corrupted since she actually knew what the fuck the Crystals were and how exactly they operated, and she still managed to live for over 50,000 years before being killed in battle, not by being corrupted you dumbfuck.

Look just because we can no longer play our favorite game of sneeki breeki with the humans being completely unaware DOESN'T mean that everything is going to hell in absolute terms.

We still have allies. Heretic will do everything to stop the Crystals. Unity will do too since the crystals existing means the possibility of Human extinction. The Commonwealth too since they don't want to die like little bitches.

>>48305941
>No, the quest began on the only hope clause I'm presenting now.
And nothing has happened yet that has invalided that

>>48305952
See the White Queen lasting for millenia against the Crystals. There's literally no way of fighting them without knowing more of them. This was inevitable and the only difference now is that it just moved up our timetable.
>>
>>48305889
Mother survived for 50,000 years by refusing to get involved with any of the old queens experimental attempts to fight Them, remember? She cut herself off from anything directly to do with the void gods, as opposed to her sister the Black Queen, who lead all of the other hives to find and fight them.
>>
>>48305966
We are "just being watched" from the inside of our own head. It could have been worse, but it's still past a point that can be salvaged.
>>
>>48305970
Did you forget they can Scry us you dumb shit?
>>
>>48305973
And another piece of evidence that the people who constantly call others retarded are retarded themselves.

You don't even know what this is about, do you.
>>
>>48305982
>Mother survived for 50,000 years by refusing to get involved with any of the old queens experimental attempts to fight Them, remember?
She didn't fight against them directly, which is why she engineered humans to do the dirty work for her. We have Unity, Heretic and Commonwealth to do the same for us.

>>48305996
Then explain your position better
>>
>>48305996
You're the one being a defeatist faggot.
>>48305983
They are scrying us with psionics you dumb shit.
>>
>>48305986
This isn't scrying, this is a mind infection. Or maybe it is scrying if you want to call the mind infection that, just don't pretend that there's a distinction.

Whatever you call it, the enemy is now inside our head, there is no way to get it out, there is no way to be certain our mind is sound from this point on or if we're just dancing to the tune of what the alien mind wants, and the distinction of scrying or not doesn't change a thing about any of it.

>>48306011
Read the fucking thread, I'm not here to hold your 70 IQ hand.
>>
>>48305986
And where are you pulling that from? The idea that the crystals were fully omniscient was a player theory, in every reference within the quest proper they're only ever described as operating in conjunction with their believers. They seem to be limited to what their followers sense or report to them.
>>
>>48306020
> there is no way to be certain our mind is sound from this point on or if we're just dancing to the tune of what the alien mind wants,
If this were a traditional story, I'd believe you. This is a fucking quest. We make the ultimate decisions.
>>
>>48306036
No, we just make the decisions on how to respond to what the QM gives us. He's the one who says what happens.
>>
>>48306020
>this is a mind infection
That is an extreme and very unlikely assumption
>there is no way to get it out
Because the Skyl couldn't be freed right even though they were. Your entire understanding is flawed.
>>
>>48306017
>They are scrying us with psionics you dumb shit.
Do you have a single scrap of proof to back that up?

>>48306036
No you retard, QD makes the decisions as the QM. And going on what he has told us prior to this, we're are in deep deep shit.
>>
>>48306046
>>48306059
>No, we just make the decisions on how to respond to what the QM gives us. He's the one who says what happens.
Yes, and we aren't mindless puppets that are route-locked into a bad end because of one mistake. Let the bad rolls dictate that. Let the snowballing effect of multiple bad decisions dictate that. Don't let one bad decision ruin an entire quest.

QD has so far been lenient on us and I severely doubt that ONE mistake is going to make everything crumble to dust.
>>
>>48306052
>That is an extreme and very unlikely assumption
Except the entire quest right from the start supports it. Our entire species, all the hive queens, fell to this exact same thing.

>Because the Skyl couldn't be freed right even though they were.
The skyl weren't "freed", we just made more. The same way our mother made us because she was infected - because she knew it was the only hope. Likewise, our only real hope is to have a daughter now while we can still hopefully think.

>Your entire understanding is flawed.
Yours is. You don't even know what you're talking about, apparently.
>>
>>48306059
We are being watched does not mean mind infection. Hell we found out early on that void shards can scry which can be sensed or even shutdown.
>>
>>48306052
Have you read any of the past threads on Them? Read what the barren queen has to say about them and how they corrupt other queens. They aren't some highly intelligent god who ignores anyone he doesn't like until forced, They are distinctively malign spiritual/psionic menace that sweeps through creatures like a bad meme.
>>
>>48306077
By continuing to make mistakes we will compound an already endgame level disaster into destroying everything.

We still do have hope. Just move the PoV character onto a daughter. Don't give her any direct memories of the crystals, leave Elizabeth, Heretic, or someone else like that to explain things to her.

We reset the quest to the start, excepting the political landscape we've cultivated and the empire we've built. Nobody outside need even know that there's a new queen.
>>
>>48306080
>The skyl weren't "freed
Are you retarded? Seriously that's a fucking plot point you are denying here. Skyl were freed from being enslaved by the old queens which has repeatedly stated.
>>
>>48306106
Oh right. And we probably need to purge and recreate all thinkers while we're at it.

Wouldn't want something like that to slip through.
>>
>>48306077
QD has indeed been lenient but there's a limit any good QM will go to holding his players hands. We screwed up in every single possible way over these past two threads, we have nothing to show for what we did, and that will have to cost us dearly.
>>
>>48306126
They were "freed" in the exact same sense our PoV character was freed from the infection our mother was suffering.
>>
>>48306106
I think this is the only thing to do with the quest at this point.
>>
What I want to know, is would the Void Crystal's attention be drawn to a Queen if we were to transcribe all knowledge pertaining them onto a non-psionic medium, and retrieve data from that?
>>
>>48306106
That's not how it works. QD has said that if the Red Queen dies it's quest over.
>>48306144
No it isn't anon. Seriously reread the part where they rebelled against the gods.
>>
>>48306191
Do you even know how they gather information?
>>
>>48306191
Who knows. We probably never will know such a thing, since actually doing that is way beyond us.

>>48306195
>That's not how it works. QD has said that if the Red Queen dies it's quest over.
Then it's quest over. It's been nice, guys.

>No it isn't anon. Seriously reread the part where they rebelled against the gods.
There is nothing about purging all mental influence in there, which is what being free means in this context.
>>
>>48306208
What a mean is like this
>Queen goes on a suicide run to gather as much knowledge as she can, preferably with someone else on the killswitch
>Transfers the knowledge to an artificial construct like Theseus or Heretic
>Who then writes in on a non-psionic medium, on fucking paper if they have to
>Next Queen reads from that and tries to find the next step from there.
>>
>>48306237
How new are you? It's been explained why the Skyl don't use physical medium for communication.
>>
>>48306264
So why couldn't we just tell Theseus everything we know about the crystals, have him write that down so that there might be something to go on rather than having the next Queen go fumbling around trying to find out about the Crystals with trial and error?
>>
>>48306237
We don't know if that could work even if we did it that way. The information is possibly such that it can't be written down physically. Anyone transferring such information would always be suspect - there's no way to know when they start spouting bullshit, and even no way to really know when to use the kill switch.

There's no way to know that the information stops being dangerous just because it's in a different medium. There's no way to know that we're even dealing with static information and not something more dynamic like programming, which it most likely is.

>>48306264
Are you confused?
>>
You know, I've finally understood how cosmic horror feels. Lovecraft has nothing on this.
The more powerful a character is, when faced against a thing so incomprehensible and hostile, that even with our full power we can barely hope to scratch it.

Now this is something.
>>
From all this discussion, I can tell that a lot of anons will advocate for starting Psionic Canon research next thread. I'm against doing that right away since it's extremely dangerous research and will likely be attacked by OQ/cephs soon after starting. First, we need to build a remote lab/fortress to both fend off attacks to interupt research and so damage is minimal if the worst happens like on the Builder world. We could even have a defensive heavy fleet for added security to the facility.
>>
>>48306304
>Are you confused?
Skyl cube research go reread that. It shows how little you understand.
Hell you don't even realize the crystals are actually physical creatures.
>>
>>48306355
>Out of the way Lovecraft, DragonBall Z comin' through!
>>
>>48306377
I'm sure Theseus can lend us a servership to start as a base for research, we can build the docking pylon next to it in deep space.
>>
>>48306355
For me horror just doesn't work in quests. There's always anons sperging out about it and analyzing it, which makes it feel boring at best, and the entire experience often makes me cringe.

>>48306378
Stop changing the subject. Either explain, even vaguely, how you plan to completely purge the mental influence, or admit that you're either confused or arguing without good faith.

Right now all we know is that it's terminal. The Skyl lived with it, just like the older queens lived with it for a time, but in the end the only option was to be reborn.
>>
>>48306416
>Either explain, even vaguely, how you plan to completely purge the mental influence, or admit that you're either confused or arguing without good faith.
If it was actual corruption we'd be hallucinating like the marines since corruption would just be advanced psionic imprinting not to mention it would take time to effectively corrupt someone like the mad scientist.
>>
>>48306416
It's not the sperging for me, hell the sperging just deepens it.

We're arguing with each other right now because despite everything in our power, the Crystals can literally just swat us out of existence and we're fruitlessly trying to find ways around it, with the only option that has worked more than once being
"Fuck everything just chuck the kids somewhere far away and hope it doesn't follow them/hope they come up with a better plan than we did."
>>
>>48306403
Basically the same thing. We need the proper facilities instead of risking having one of our worlds be attacked or having the project devastate. However, the Unity just lost a server ship so I'm not so sure they'll lend one out on short notice.
>>
>>48306467
>despite everything in our power, the Crystals can literally just swat us out of existence and we're fruitlessly trying to find ways around it
And this is what makes me cringe. It's just so stupid. Add to that that imagining being on the receiving end of mind control is tedious at best, and I can safely say that my enjoyment of this quest was completely wrecked in this thread.

I hope we come up with something to salvage it.
>>
>>48306508
Anon, all research needs proper facilities. Every time we research something dangerous it's placed an appropriate distance from anything else important. You aren't exactly pioneering new concepts here.
>>
>>48306465
It did take time to mind control him, but he was corrupted from the start. And remember that humans have resistance to this sort of thing. If the hive queen had spent that much time gazing into the crystals she'd have been gone a lot sooner than he was.
>>
>>48306519
> Add to that that imagining being on the receiving end of mind control is tedious at best
I still don't know how one can even implement mindcontrol in a quest without the playerbase immediately trying to go against it, save maybe rolling for will saves but thats not going to be enjoyable for anyone.

>thats not going to be enjoyable for anyone
For that reason alone i don't think QD is going to seriously go all DOOM on us.
>>
>>48306467
>the Crystals can literally just swat us out of existence and we're fruitlessly trying to find ways around it
The thing is that can do it but generally don't which is unusual unless have some big weakness they're trying to keep hidden.
>>48306519
>Add to that that imagining being on the receiving end of mind control is tedious at best
We aren't being mind controlled genius. If they had such effective mind control then nobody could ever hope to stand a chance.
>>
>>48306557
>save maybe for constantly rolling for will saves
Just to make myself clear
>>
>>48306557
>I still don't know how one can even implement mindcontrol in a quest without the playerbase immediately trying to go against it, save maybe rolling for will saves but thats not going to be enjoyable for anyone.
Simple, just make it not obvious that we're not doing what we think we're doing.

>>48306564
>If they had such effective mind control then nobody could ever hope to stand a chance.
Nobody HAS ever stood a chance. Entire civilizations, ours included, were completely conquered by it.

Go read the fucking quest archives, I'm convinced you've only read about a tenth of the threads at this point.
>>
>>48306551
It's not mind control. At least not the kind you're thinking it's more like psionic imprinting.
>>48306574
>Nobody HAS ever stood a chance.
Not just never have but never would since they would be invincible.
>>
>>48306537
Psionic canon is on another scale though.

Not that finishing it garantees us victory. We would then need to build Hive ships with psionic canons (not just one, since having just one superweapon is dumb, especially if it gets disabled) and aquire enough voix crystals to use as ammo since unless we're very lucky on the dice, one shot's not going to cut it.
>>
>>48306601
>It's not mind control. At least not the kind you're thinking it's more like psionic imprinting.
So it's not what I'm thinking, but it actually is? Wow anon, make up your mind.

>>48306615
Even having it doesn't really accomplish anything.

What exactly is the target for it?
>>
>>48306601
>It's not mind control. At least not the kind you're thinking it's more like psionic imprinting.
By the way, I'm mildly amazed that you're trying to construct a semantic argument out of whole cloth.
>>
>>48306574
The thing is with Void Crystal corruption, almost all of those corrupted that we've seen have been doing those things on their own volition, that is, they made it pretty clear that they did it willingly and they're not fighting against the Crystal's influence.

You can't model that for a quest with players who will do their damnedest to do the opposite of what the mind control is telling them to do.
You could say that the PC's perception is being skewed in-game but at that point you're just voting for what flavor of bad ending you'll get. And I frankly do not think that QD is that kind of QM.
>>
>>48306649
They appeared to be doing it of their own volition, because their old agenda was seamlessly transitioned into the new one.

The problem is that from this point on we just can't know what's really happening. I'd propose we use our trusted allies as advisors to avoid doing anything bad, but that doesn't work because we can't be sure we're understanding their advice properly either.
>>
>>48306649
Well duh we converted Coil. This implies people here don't know what they're talking about when they say it's mind control. The only actual mind control they have we should be worried about right now is the Crystal Psionic Spores.
>>
>>48306694
Coil still thinks he's working in favor of his void gods, though, he wasn't converted.
>>
>>48306649
Just look at what happened to the Black Queen, according to the barren queen. She failed to look away once, just briefly in an encounter with the crystals. After that it was only a matter of time before her mind was consumed by them.
>>
>>48306747
The Black Queen wasnt controlled by the players.

And even if that happened to us, you'd have to address how most of us here would feel about doing a complete 180 of literally everything we've been fighting for up until that point.
>>
>>48306777
>The Black Queen wasnt controlled by the players.
Metagaming?
>>
>>48306788
Yes. We can literally just vote to fight the mind control, even if it kills us in the process.
>>
>>48306747
Here's a simple question. How would it work?
>>48306777
That's because the black queen got infected by their spores.
>>
>>48306777
Most of us would feel shitty about it, as we should, because that's what the vote got us into. We can't just ignore consequences like this, even if they're disastrous, or else consequences become meaningless.

As such we need to find a plan to escape this fate. The only thing that anyone has presented that has a chance of working is to move our point of view.

>>48306801
Just like the black queen did.
>>
>>48306804
>How would it work?
The quest ends. Alternatively, the infection is used to justify our increasingly disastrous decisions.
>>
>>48306820
>Just like the black queen did.
No it didn't she's still kicking and is absolutely giddy at having killed her friends and family
>>
Jesus christ guys i go to bed and the entire thread burns. Whelp it was nice knowing mother
>>
>>48306842
She's that way now, after it took over her completely.
>>
Actually hold on here. Were we jewed? We said to destory the last relay if some shit like this happened weren't we? why wasn't it?
>>
>>48306801
>Yes. We can literally just vote to fight the mind control, even if it kills us in the process.
We can try, that doesn't mean we'll succeed. And as far as we know there is absolutely no way to get rid of it, so we'll need to try again and again at odds worse and worse until we finally fail.
>>
>>48306911
Or we can just ask our friends to kill us after laying a daughter.

>>48306910
Shit happened too fast, we didn't even know if what was happening would reach the relay ship.
>>
>>48306801
After every single old queen fell. Sure buddy.
>>
>>48306910
Because there was no "mental attack" that could be perceived.

Actually our rolls weren't bad around that time, so you may be right.
>>
>>48306910
And that isn't considering that when the artifacts used to trigger this disaster were driven off we sent a bunch of flies to get under the bumper of the truck and learn where they were being brought.

We never heard about those flies.
>>
Holy hell the over reacting..the void thing just literally realized that we are here, that's it.
It will watch us and will probally try mental attack/corruption at the next change there is crystal fuckery, and sent some ceph raiders after us, nothing else comes out of this.

It knows about us, so we gotta be more carefull, end of story.
>>
>>48306851
Yeah, I don't know if I'll be able to enjoy this quest anymore if this just gets ignored.

>>48306965
That's not it. It's inside our head. It's not watching through the crystals, it's watching from inside us.
