You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Right now, you were in a bit of jam, as you've now found yourself in a... compromising position over Portland. You just wanted to check if she grew a size! Honest! It's not your fault she decided to just up and pass out on you!

...and then that's when Anna walked in.

"OHMYGODWHYAREYOUMOLESTINGPORTLAND." Anna yelped, her hands covering her mouth.

>So, uh... how about some breakfast?

"Just so you know, Sweet Pea totally grew a size." You say blankly, your mind being utterly incapable of coming up with any witty to try and defuse the tension.

"G-grew a size...?" Anna blinks. She then looks down at her OWN chest and you can see her cheeks starting to flush red a bit.

"SO HOW BOUT SOME BREAKFAST?" You bellow loudly to try and change the subject, casually slinging the still unconscious Portland over your shoulder and grabbing Anna by the hand and pulling her along towards the mess.

"H-huh? O-okay!" Anna yelps as she's forcefully pulled along.

"W-what's going on...?" Portland groans as her optics flutter open. She adjusts her glasses which had been knocked loose and sees you carrying her. "Hoel? Why are you carrying me...?"

Oh shit, looks like she didn't remember anything! What do you say?

"Haha, guess you could use some coffee, huh?" You force a laugh to deflect Portland's suspicions. "Looks like last night's mission really took it out of you!"

"I suppose..." Portland blinks as she slides off your shoulder and gets back on her own two feet, swaying a bit as she regains her balance.

"But weren't you-" Anna starts right before you clamp your hand over her mouth.

"SHE WAS JUST TIRED, ANNA!" You force your laugh even louder to make sure Anna gets the point. Anna just nods silently, her antenna wriggling wildly in surprise.

"I don't get how you destroyers can be so energetic at all hours." Portland groans as she pushes open the door to the mess hall. Inside, it was largely empty, with only a handful of crew and a couple of shipgirls present. At this hour, most of the crew was still asleep or just getting up, so you had the room relatively all to yourself.

However, you did catch sight of the Captain in his own personal little corner, the rest of the crew opting to keep their distance from him.

"I guess I shouldn't be surprised to see him here." Portland notes. "Sometimes I don't think the Captain even sleeps at all.

"Y-yeah, I've never seen him sleep!" Anna adds.

"You're practically always awake, too, Anna." You quip playfully as you ruffle her hair.

"H-hey! That's different!" Anna wails.

You glance back at the Captain, who was casually sipping a cup of coffee as he looked at his tablet. Morning news? Routine reports? Top secret info? You weren't sure. However, you could swear he looked a bit lonely...

"C'mon, it looks like the Captain needs some company." You grin as you grab your tray of pancakes, bacon, eggs, and coffee. A pretty standard breakfast, honestly. Especially for shipgirls.

"Are you sure? He might want to be left alone." Portland frowns.

"Then why would be eating in here?" You roll your eyes.

"I-I suppose there's nothing wrong with that." Anna nods as she manages to cram five cups of coffee onto her tray in addition to her food.

"Then it's decided!" You grin as you trot over to the Captain's table and plop down on the seat next to him. Anna and Portland sit across.

The Captain, to his credit, doesn't visibly react to your presence. Only a slight shifting of his tired eyes as he counts how many of you there are before taking a sip of coffee.

"Can I help you?" He asks calmly and politely.

"Sooooooo, watcha reading?" You bounce up and down eagerly as you chew on a strip of bacon. "Important stuff?"

"Indeed, I'm reading some sensitive material." The Captain sighs, angling is tablet a bit so you can't really see the screen from where you are.

"Oh! Oh! New orders from the Admiral?" Anna's antenna perks up.

"Intel reports of enemy strength?" Portland probes.

Heh, looks like those two girls were suckers for gossip, too.

"Lover letters from North Carolinaaaaa~?" You tease.

"No comment." The Captain coolly sips from his coffee mug again.

Damn the Captain was smooth. As expected of of the man whose job was to deal with shipgirls all day.

Your quick destroyer reflexes manage to beat the Captain's, and you tilt your head forward before he has the chance to pull the tablet away, and you manage to catch that he's reading an email. Your optics flash as they glean in all of the text in the few seconds you're able to maintain contact. You couldn't analyze all of the words, but you understand just enough.

It was an e-mail from North Carolina, reporting the status of things going on in the Pacific. Like the Captain, it was very in depth and detail oriented, basically describing the day to day operations of the entire theater of operations.

But the pure gold was just a couple of lines near the bottom of letter.

"You're really missed here. When are you coming back?"

Oooooooooh.

The Captain shoots you a discouraging look, while Anna and Portland lean in with deep interest, apparently wanting to know what you saw.

"Man, your material is SUPER BORING." You frown as you lean back in your chair and take a fresh sip from your coffee cup before cramming a slice of pancake down your mouth. "Makes me almost wanna go to sleep again!"

Anna and Portland then lean back in response. Anna's antenna droops and Portland haughtily adjusts her glasses as if to pretend she wasn't interested in the first place.

The Captain gives you a slightly surprised look, and you just give in a playful wink. He just slightly shakes his head in response.

"So Captain, when are we gonna reach the Falklands?!" Anna squeals in anticipation. "I can't wait to meet some Royal Navy ships!"

"I've heard they're very professional." Portland nods in agreement. "Actually, what is the force composition of the RN detachment?"

"Their shipgirl force mainly consists of carriers and cruisers. A few conventional ships and submarines round out the fleet, with some ground based planes and shore artillery for defense." The Captain explains, glad the subject has been changed. "Most of the the Royal Navy assets shipgirls are in the North Atlantic. The forces here are mainly just a defensive holding force."

"Part of the 'North First' strategy?" Portland raises an eyebrow.

"O-oh, like Germany First back in the War?" Anna blinks.

"That's the idea." The Captain nods. "Since most of the world's navies are based in the northern hemisphere, naturally the north has to be secured first, so that's where the priority is."

"Makes sense, I guess." You sigh as you finally finish your breakfast. Anna and Portland seem to be finishing up, too, though the Captain has practically not touched his at all.

"You going to have any of that bacon?" You ask, your bottomless stomach still growling.

"Yes. Eventually." The Captain grunts. "However, since you three are up so early, I was wondering if you'd like to participate in a little mission."

"What kind of mission?" You blink. Anna and Portland also immediately perk up.

"We've been trying to contact the Falklands garrison, but we've been having trouble getting through to them." The Captain explains.

"Trouble?" Portland narrows her eyes.

"No." He shakes his head. "Due to the close proximity to the Storm Wall, long range radio communications are regularly disrupted. More of a nuisance, really."

"W-well I can help!" Anna proudly proclaims, her antenna shooting straight up.

"Exactly." The Captain nods. "It's not critical, but I think it'd be a help if Anna could move ahead and act as a relay to break through the interference. I'd like to get at sitrep from the Falklands garrison before we dock."

"And she obviously needs escorts..." You continue.

"Are you up for it?" The Captain asks. "If not, I can scrub the mission and and we'll wait till we can get closer for shortwave comms."

You look at Portland and Anna. Anna is absolutely giddy while Portland was more neutral.

"Sure! Let's go!" You grin enthusiastically.

"All right. I'll prepare an Osprey on the flight deck to take you to the predetermined point." The Captain nods and he winces as the rising sun has finally reached a position where the light is shining directly into his face. "It's a routine mission so you just need your standard loudout. I believe the maintenance crews have already restored your Rigs to their previous configurations."

"Huh?" Anna blinks in confusion.

"Just testing some new equipment." The Captain explains without missing a beat. He was good at keeping his cool. "You all better get going now."

"Yes sir!" The three of you chime as you stand up from your seats and march out of the mess hall. However, as you head for the exit, you can feel the Tarawa shifting under your feet, as if she were making a sudden maneuver. You then turn back to see the Captain still sitting casually at his table, the sun now how of his face.

You just look at him curiously and he calmly looks back.

"Something the matter, Hoel?"

"N-nothing, sir." You shake your head as you march out.

"Bye! Thanks a lot!" Anna waves happily to the Osprey as it pulls away to return to the Tarawa, leaving you, Anna, and Portland at a halfway between the fleet and the Falklands. In the distance, your optics could just barely pick out the outline of the islands jutting out from the horizon.

"Hello? Hello? Does anybody read?" Anna asks, her voice buzzing inside your internal radio sets.

"This is Tarawa Actual, we read you loud and clear." The Tarawa's bridge crew replies.

"A-all right!" Anna makes a happy fist pump, as if she had accomplished something great. "O-okay, time to contact the other side! Falklands Actual, do you read me?"

No response.

"Hmmmm, I guess we just need to get closer!" Anna says, not put off at all. "Can't stop the signal!"

You eye the waters between you and the islands. Didn't really seem to be anything wrong, other than being completely barren.

Well, nothing in visual range. Might as well have a go with your radar and sonar.

Yes... but I'm kind of interested to see what will result from the nat 1.

Are we going to get molested by lewd abyssal ships as we get lost in the fog?

We need to burn more fate points. Get some tension

Or we could, not use a fate point

If we have fate points, then aren't these the kind of situations that they were saved for?

We use them for life threatening stuff, or serious shit. This scouting run could lead to anything good or bad.

>FATE POINT USED
>2 points remain

You ping the water with your sonar and the air with your radar, searching for any potential threats. You thankfully don't see anything in the air, but you do pick up faint contacts moving around in the water. At first you think it's a school of fish, but as you progress farther you can start picking out distinct shapes moving about. You... you remember this signature before, from Midway. Abyssal submarines prowling the water. And it didn't look like they were waiting in ambush, either. You counted at least four, zigzagging back and forth along the ocean floor. Were they looking for something?

However, your sonar did have the double edged sword of allowing the Abyssals to notice your presence as well. Almost immediately they turn south and speed away as fast as they could. Looks like they weren't looking to pick a fight with you.

But if that was the case what were they doing here in the first place?

"Hoel, is something wrong?" Portland asks.

"Caught some Abyssal subs in the water, but they fled the moment I pinged them." You report. "Should I go after them?"

"That's up to you. You're best equipped to handle subs, after all." Portland points out.

Another ping shows that there don't appear to be any additional subs in Anna and Portland's immediate vicinity. At least none you can see.

Ask Anna to scan the frequencies for any suspicious radio traffic. If the subs are reporting the contact, Anna might be able to find one of them through HF/DF.

Something was fishy. Those subs looked like they were hunting something. Given the unplanned nature of your operation, they couldn't have been gunning for you or Anna. Was there something else valuable in this area that would interest them? You look around, but only find open ocean and few large rocky outcroppings jutting from the water.

Odd.

"Sweet Pea, I'm going to go investigate what's going on. Anna, are you picking up anything on the set?"

"N-nothing!" Frustration begins to creep into Anna's voice. "It's like, it's like there's this big wall of interference between us and the islands!"

"Could it be something near us generating that interference?" Portland asks.

"M-maybe." Anna concedes. "I think if I can get closer, I can home in on what's causing it all! I won't let them stop the signal!"

"All right, Anna, come on up then." You encourage her.

"I hope you know what you're doing, Hoel." Portland says cautiously.

"Don't worry, I'll be fine!" You assure her. "Anna, you get anything yet?"

"Homing in... let me isolate it..." Anna mumbles, her antenna now spinning around in circles before straightening out. "O-oh! The source isn't too far from you! Just a couple kilometers southwest!"

You turn to see a rather large rock jutting out of the ocean. It wasn't too big, at least not enough to support any sort of life, but it was large enough you could hide a reasonably sized Abyssal behind it. Maybe that's where it was hiding.

However, the subs were falling back to the southeast. You figure that they're trying to lead you away from the juicer target, but you couldn't just leave a group of subs to escape and disperse into the ocean. They might double back to try and ambush you, or worse, the rest of the fleet.

Maybe you could ask Portland to go take care of it, but then that would leave Anna without escort...

"Sweet Pea, tag team!" You say as you pull a sharp 180 degree turn and head back to Anna and Portland's position. "I'll escort Anna while you handle that interference source!"

"If you say so." Portland nods as she fires up her engines. "Keep an eye on her."

"Of course!" You grin.

Portland nods as her heavy gun turrets swivel around into combat positions. She then sails off towards the rocks while you hang back with Anna.

"Y-you think she'll be okay?" Anna frowns.

"Ah, Sweet Pea can handle anything!" You assure her.

"W-what about the submarines?" Anna's visibly sweating.

"I'll keep em away from ya!" You pat Anna on the shoulder. "Trust me!"

Almost immediately, the four subs you had previously been chasing pounce the moment Portland is out of range, rising to the surface and spewing torpedoes at you and Anna.

"H-hoel!" Anna whimpers.

"Watch out!" You yell as you push her out of the line of fire while you move your feet desperately to weave between the torpedoes. The subs then quickly attempt to follow up their attack with melee attacks, their withered, pale arms reaching out to grab you.

"Get the fuuuuuck away!" You grimace as you launch depth charges at the approaching subs. The two leading subs are engulfed in a net of explosions that tear them to pieces and sent oil slicked columns of water bursting into the air.

However, one of the subs manages to sneak under and grabs you ankle, attempting to drag you under the water. Thankfully, you're faster and jam your 5-inch cannon right into the sub's eye before pulling the trigger.

That three subs accounted for. But where was the fourth?!

You whip around when you hear Anna scream, and see her pumping 5-inch shells into the shredded corpse of the fourth sub. Apparently it had attempted to sneak up on Anna but she fortunately managed to catch it before it could catch her.

"Aaaaaaah!" Anna squeals as she keeps pumping shells into the long dead sub, her eyes shut in terror.

"Anna! Anna!" You grab her arm to get her to stop firing. "It's okay! You got it!"

"I-I did?" Anna's eyes snap open and she sees her handiwork. "I did!"

"Hoel, Anna, you two okay?" Portland asks.

"Yeah, we fought off a few subs, but we're intact." You grumble. "What's up?"

"We... have some visitors." Portland announces. "You better come here straight away."

"Huh, all right." You frown as you skate over to the rocks with Anna.

And there, you see Portland certainly wasn't alone. You see what appears to be a heavily modified Wa-class transport, surrounded by the corpses of slain destroyers and light cruisers. And standing next to Portland was another cruiser that you didn't recognize, though she was wearing a pretty fancy uniform, and had bright red hair nestled snugly under an officer's cap.

"I didn't expect to see you Yanks here this soon." The British cruiser smiles. "But you're help is greatly appreciated."

"Thanks, um..." You pause when you remember you don't even know her name.

"Oh, my apologies! HMS Dorsetshire, at your service!" The British ship does a little curtsy. "To think I'd meet one of the famous Taffy 3 out here!"

"Oh! I heard of you, too!" You blink. "You were one of those British cruisers going around hunting German ships like Bismark during the War, right?"

"That's quite correct." Dorsetshire confirms with a smile. "However, I'm afraid we'll have to put small talk on hold for a moment. We need to decide what to do with this little troublemaker here."

The British cruiser then points to the Wa-class.

"It's been playing merry hell with our communications for a past few weeks. Do you mind helping me cart this back to my base for study? I was thinking of just sinking it here since it'd be dangerous to try to carry it back myself, but since you three are here..."

"Of course we'll help!" You grin.

"Excellent!" Dorsetshire smiles as she loops a tow line around the Wa-class, which sort of sits and does nothing to defend itself. Yeah, you forget these things weren't too smart.

"Just keep an eye out and I'll handle the heavy lifting!" Dorsetshire smiles brightly. "Unfortunately, since we're dragging this thing with us we won't be able to radio ahead, so just be careful not to shoot any of my girls if they approach."

"We'll keep that in mind." Portland nods.

"H-here, let me help!" Anna stammers as she grips the tow line as well. "S-since my comms won't work with this thing nearby I might as well help with the tow!"

"Why, thank you!" Dorsetshire's bright smile becomes a little brighter. "All right then, off we go!"

As your impromptu little squadron heads out towards the islands in the distance, you can hear Dorsetshire start to hum a little song to herself, with Anna humming along with her.
