For three years, you have been preparing yourself.

You've fought demons, dinosaurs, and armies. You've trained in snowy mountains, deep jungles, and dry deserts. You've trained endurance, defense, speed, and even developed a handy new trick.

Now, the time has come to see if all of that will ultimately pay off.

The day is finally here

The 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament has arrived.

If this is anything like the last tournament, registration will be today, and the actual fighting will be tomorrow. If you leave now, you'll make it nice and early, be able to sign up, and probably see your friends when they arrive.

Weighing your options, you consider the kinds of fighters you'll be up against.

Goku was pretty much equal to you the last time you saw him, and you know he'll be training incredibly hard. Krillin was catching up fast and vowed not to lose to you in the tournament, so there's no telling how strong he is. Beyond that, what if Jackie Chun shows up again? And what other strong fighters could there be? You meet new and powerful people all the time, for all you know, there could be a warrior there that puts Jackie Chun to shame.

With that in mind, you spend the day doing some training, doing a bit of everything before you run out of time and have to make your way to the tournament.

To reach Papaya Island, where the tournament is being held, you have to swim across the ocean. You move incredibly fast, even with your weighted clothes on, and soon reach the tournament grounds.

As you approach the tournament table, you spot someone rushing toward the grounds.

It's Goku, for some reason dressed in tiger-skin, and dripping wet.

He runs past the table and over to a group of people.

You recognize Master Roshi immediately, as he looks pretty much the same as the last time you saw him. Krillin is there too, dressed in a nice suit. Launch, in her blonde state is with the group, wearing a black t-shirt, Oolong's dressed like she normally is, and even Master Roshi's turtle is there.

The others look a bit different. Bulma has cut her hair shorter, and is dressed much more modestly than she usually is. A pretty blonde girl with piercing blue eyes, and a boy your age with the same eyes stand with the group, and you recognize them as Lapis and Lazuli.

A pretty girl with dark hair stands near Krillin, and behind her stands a massive man with a horned helmet.

You guess those are Chichi and the Ox King.

You head over to the table, where Master Roshi is already speaking to the registrar. He doesn't even seem to notice you as he turns around and makes his way back to the group.

The registrar looks up as you approach the table. "Looking to register?"

You nod. "Tofoo."

"Tofoo? The boy who took second place last tournament?" the registrar asks, surprised. "My, you've grown. Anyway, you're all signed up. Best of luck to you."

All signed up, you approach your friends and say hello.

"Uh...hi," Krillin says.

"Do we know you?" Lazuli asks.

Goku sniffs the air. "Wait, that smell..."

"And that symbol on the uniform," Bulma says, gasping. "Tofoo?"

"Tofoo?!" Krillin asks, looking up at you in disbelief.

"You got tall!" Goku observes with a smile.

"Tofoo, have you been keeping up with your training?" Roshi asks. "I hope your height isn't the only thing that's increased in the last three years."

You promise Master Roshi that you've been training your hardest, then ask everyone how they've been.

"Great!" Goku tells you. "I went all over the world and got to see so many things."

"So did I," Krillin says. "Though nothing was quite as exciting as that battle we had in Devil's Castle."

"Devil's Castle?!" Oolong asks. "I thought that place was just a legend!"

"Nope, very real," Launch says, smirking. "Just like the Sleeping Princess."

"Sleeping Princess?" Goku asks. "Why do they call her that? Does she nap a lot?"

"Actually, it turns out the Sleeping Princess is a jewel," Krillin tells him. "A very valuable one, too. Oh, that reminds me, Tofoo, we sent Bulma your share of the money we got for it."

"I put it in an account for you," Bulma informs you. "So it'll be right there if you need it."

"Things have been pretty great on the island since Krillin brought back Launch," Roshi tells you. "Just the two of us."

"Uh, Master, aren't you forgetting someone?" the turtle asks.

You look to Chichi, Ox King, Lapis, and Lazuli, asking why they're here.

"I wanted to come and support Krillin," Chichi answers.

Krillin blushes, a big smile on his face.

"I thought this might be fun to see," Lapis tells you. "Now my sister and I will get to find out if you're really as tough as you say you are."

"And I'm going to be competing," Ox King tells you. "It will be a great honor to fight against Master Roshi's other pupils."

"Same to you, my friend," the Ox King replies cheerfully.

"I'd love to fight you," you comment.

You recall that the Ox King was able to easily destroy tanks during the Red Ribbon Army's attack on his village. And, you remember Oolong telling you that he's a legendary warrior. To fight him could be a great experience.

"Thank you," the great king says. "I'll bet you'd give me a great fight!"

Looking to Chichi, you ask if she's going to enter.

"Who? Me?" she asks. "No way. Dad taught me how to fight but being a martial artist isn't really something that interests me."

"Yeah, you're only interested in dating one," Oolong comments.

That gives you an idea.

"So, do I still get a kiss if I win the tournament, Bulma?" you ask teasingly.

Rather than making a sarcastic remark or yelling at you, Bulma actually seems to consider it, and if you're not mistaken, you think she's blushing.

Changing the subject, you ask Goku if he trained his tail.

"Yep!" he tells you. "I was tired of people grabbing it all the time."

"Tofoo, did you know Yamcha's here?" Krillin asks.

"It's okay, Master," Krillin tells him. "We'll beat them no problem."

"Do not take Shen's students lightly," Roshi cautions. "Shen follows a misguided path, but that doesn't make him or his students any less dangerous."

"Yes, Master," Ox King says. "We'll be careful."

"No, but I'm sure he'll be here," Roshi tells you.

"Two other students," Krillin answers. "A big guy with three eyes, and a short guy with a white face that had two red circles on it."

"They were having their friend Inoshikacho attack villages, then pretending to beat him to get money," Goku explains. "When I told the villagers what was happening, those two hurt Inoshikacho, so I had to save him."

"Jerks," Bulma comments.

"What kind of stupid name is Inoshikacho?' Launch asks.

"He's not stupid!" Goku protests. "He's my friend!"

Wanting to change the subject before a fight can break out, you ask if Puar was with the group.

"I didn't see him," Bulma tells you.

"So, what now?" you ask.

"Well, since we're all together for the first time in three years, why don't we go out to dinner to celebrate?" Roshi asks. "My treat."

"That sounds great!" Bulma says.

"I won't turn down a free meal," Lazuli says.

"I'm going to eat until I'm full!" Goku declares, causing Roshi to tremble a bit.

As everyone heads for one of the many restaurants in the area, you hear something.

"Psst, Tofoo," a high pitched voice calls from behind a tree.

You stop and look toward it.

"Hey, what's with you?" Lapis asks.

"What's this about?" you ask him.

"Yamcha," he answers. "After you beat him in the last tournament, he went and found a teacher named Master Shen. Master Shen said he'd make Yamcha stronger, and he did, but he's a really bad person. Master Shen and his students hurt people for no reason and treat everyone badly. I don't like the way Yamcha's been acting since he started learning from him."

Puar sighs, looking down. "That was different. We didn't hurt people if we didn't have to. We tried scaring them first, and if they gave us their money we let them go. Now Yamcha's hurting people for no reason. And he wants revenge on Krillin too, but especially on you!"

"Well, have you tried talking to him?" you ask.

"Of course I have!" Puar shouts. "But he won't listen! He wants to take you apart in the ring in front of everybody!"

"Well, what do you want me to do about it?" you ask. "If he won't listen to you, why would he listen to me? All I can really do is beat him down, and I don't know what that'll accomplish."

"I want you to beat him!" Puar tells you. "But differently than he would! He wants to kill you in the ring, or at least break a few of your bones! If you beat him without being that cruel, maybe he'll see that Shen's not right for him!"

Arriving at the restaurant, you find them seated at a huge table, and notice that the turtle has a place set for him on the floor. A seat has been left open for you, and it seems that your friends were able to guess what you'd want to eat.

Goku, Ox King, Krillin, and even Launch eat ravenously, which seems to disturb Bulma just a bit. Still, you can hardly blame them, the food smells delicious, and as you take a bite, you see that it tastes just as good.

"So, what was all that about?" Lapis asks once you swallow your first bite.

"It's a secret," you answer as you work to finish your meal.

Dinner's pretty pleasant,as everyone seems to be in high spirits at being together again. You even catch Lazuli smile a few times during it all. Launch is oddly pleasant, Lapis seems to have little trouble getting along with the others, Chichi and Krillin seem thrilled to be around each other, and Goku seems thrilled to be eating.

When dinner is finished, you all retire to a hotel, and spend a few hours hanging out and playing cards.

Eventually, Bulma, Launch, and Lazuli get up and leave the room, heading for the room the three of them share to get ready for bed.

Roshi immediately gets up, grabs some sheets and pillows, and follows them.

You decide to follow Roshi, leaving the room and going down the hall.

He opens the door to the girl's room and steps inside as they're undressing. Luckily, they aren't too exposed. Launch is still in her pants and a bra, Bulma's only taken off her sweatshirt, and Lazuli hasn't taken off anything.

"Sleepover!" Roshi shouts as he walks in.

The girls turn and glare at him, with Launch covering her chest with her hands.

"Oh, uh, this isn't my room," Roshi says as you slowly back away. "Well, I brought some fresh sheets in case you get cold."

A few seconds later, he walks out of the room, his glasses broken and his face bleeding.

The two of you return to your room, passing Chichi on the way. You and the other guys get ready for bed.

You sleep well that night, relaxed and ready for the next day. Although, you have some dreams it would be best not to tell the girls about.

The next day, you wake up feeling refreshed, and you make your way to the tournament grounds with the others. The area around the contest hall is blocked off to those who are not competing, but as you gather with Goku, Krillin, and Ox King, you see Bulma and Oolong climb onto the wall.

"Hey, we just wanted to wish you luck!" Bulma says.

You wave goodbye to Bulma and go with the others to the contest hall. As the four of you make your way there (the Ox King shakes the ground as he runs toward the hall, knocking a few competitors over in the process), you catch Krillin smirking at you.

"What's so funny?" you ask Krillin.

"You like Bulma!" he answers in a singsong tone.

"Well yeah, she's our friend," Goku says. "We all like her."

"No, Goku, not like that," Krillin groans.

The four of you enter the contest hall, and find it much like you remember from the last tournament. There are countless competitors standing around several rings, with a large board on one side showing the brackets.

"Welcome to the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament!" an official announces. "As you all no doubt know, due to the unprecedented success of our previous Tournament, we will now be holding these competitions once every three years as opposed to every five. We're quite happy with this, and quite happy with the turnout. Unfortunately, out of all of you fighters, only eight can compete in front of the crowds in the finals. To determine who those eight are, you will fight in a series of preliminary matches. Please, come and draw your numbers so we can begin."

You and your friends draw your numbers, happily finding that none of you will be fighting each other in the preliminary matches.

"Now, let's go over the rules," the official says. "The matches will have no time limits. You will fight until one competitor is knocked from the ring, knocked unconscious, or says they give up. Weapons are not allowed, but claws and fangs may be used if they are natural."

"So, you're the kid Yamcha's been going on about,"

Turning around, you find yourself looking at a tall, three-eyed man in a uniform with the crane kanji on it, and a hat with a red ball on top of it.

Standing beside him is a short person in the same uniform, but with two eyes, a face painted white, and two red circles drawn on it.

"I can't say I understand his concern," the taller man says. "But then again, he was a pretty pathetic fighter when he first showed up."

You get the feeling that you and Tenshinhan will not get along very well.
