Shinobi Quest #23

This quest takes place within the lands of the Five Great Shinobi Nations (aka Narutoverse) starting roughly around the beginning of the original series. The world of this quest remains similar to the original, with slight but notable differences in certain areas, based upon the passage of time from a single slightly altered event.

(It’s a goddamn Naruto Quest, you bastards. Have fun, participate, and write in when you feel inclined. Most of the outcomes of this quest will be determined by you, the players. Critiques and questions are always welcome, as my knowledge of the weeby shit is not all encompassing.)

Last thread, Tsuki Norihime greeted her returning sensei after his extended absence, and was informed of her new mission the following day to travel to the Land of Wind. After spending quality time with her Father, a useful tool- the [All-Terrain Shinobi Facemask]- was created. The next day, the reassembled team traveled south to the Land of Wind to begin their mission, meeting up with the client, Dr. Lemeza Kosugi. The five them then began the trek across the vast desert towards the ruins, eventually running until a group of Suna shinobi led by the daughter of the Kazekage, Temari. Eventually, they reached the camp outside the ruins….

Lemeza leads you into a large tent in the center of the Fire encampment- on the way you can see many other, smaller tents, each with other archaeological teams. This dig site was certainly bigger than you believed…

“Alright, ladies and gentleman, we have arrived. Welcome to my humble lodgings.” Lemeza says, gesturing to his tent. It’s certainly nicer than you imagined- or least better than the tents you used on your last trip. You can see he has cots prepared for the four of you; nothing fancy, but serviceable.

“We’re to be sleeping with you, Dr. Kosugi?” Hinata asks, somewhat absentmindedly.

“No worries, I’m a gentleman. The four of you are to be my protection- not just from what lies inside the ruins, but our *ahem* friendly compatriots. As the head of the expedition, I’m sure the other nation’s teams would just be *mortified* if something were to befall me. Besides, they have their own bodyguards.

You, Hinata and Nori all look to Itachi. He doesn’t say anything, his face hidden behind his mask.

Lemeza immediately starts to backpedal. “Not that I believe anything will happen! Of course not. Your presence is mainly a deterrent. I’m sure they don’t want to create an international incident….”

You certainly have questions, but would it be best to let Itachi sensei ask them?

You…

1. Ask Lemeza yourself. (What will you ask him?)
2. Let Itachi ask him the questions.

We should go full Sasaki Kojiro and develop a signature kenjutsu technique/form based on the movement of our bird of paradise/tropical bird summons in flight.
Combine with stellar chakra, the kiba swords, and potential best sage mode and we've got an ultimate technique.

reposting from end of last thread for discussion...

Avian contract all the way. Even if peacocks are genjutsu-based, genjutsu from summons is legitimately powerful if I remember the series correctly. We'd have 0 genjutsu options otherwise so it'd shore up a weak point. It'd be nice to have some flexibility for options in battle.

Plus, the contract would probably include multiple types of birds other than peacocks. There will probably be mainly mid-tier birds we can summon that are ninjutsu or utility-based with the big badass Suzaku at the top of the summon roster.

so, bird contract pros:
>Flexibility
>Fits our ic personality
>Variability in use and talents of creatures summoned
>Suzaku
>Combines well with stellar release
>Potential best sage mode
>probably will teach us mad flashy ninjutsu
>Isn't necessarily incompatible with lightning element either

Cons:
>Probably brings 0 taijutsu to the table
>You'd probably have to choose between birds and tigers

You detach your mask.

You find that the air in the camp is not quite as bad as you expected, which is pleasant.

“First, Lemeza. Do you have any screens or anything? Not that I believe you’d try anything, but we ladies have our dignity.” you ask with an undercurrent of command.

“Yes, we have a few. I don’t mind re-arranging the room for the three of you. Of course.” He replies nonchalantly.

“Very good. Now, a few things.” you sit on the nearest cot, cross your legs, and make eye contact with the doctor.

“You mentioned bodyguards for teams belong to the other nations?”

“Er, yes.” he starts. “There are three encampments here, you see. Our camp, belonging to the Land of Fire, and two others. One belonging to the Land of Wind, and the other belonging to the Land of Earth. We aren’t exactly at odds, per se, but atmosphere is bit… tense. Then the researchers from the Land of Wind took on the bodyguards, and soon after, the Earth brought in their own. We took you folks on to compensate.”

Wonderful.

“Do you know anything about them?” you ask.
“The Earth only brought a girl. An Iwa shinobi. She’s… rather flippant. But she’s definitely strong- enough to put the folks from the Wind on guard.”

A single girl…?

“And the Wind’s bodyguards? They were the first to arrive, yes?” you continue to question.

“Yes. As you know, Suna shinobi refuse to go near the ruins, and the Land of Wind wouldn’t hire outside Shinobi. I believe them they hired are missing-nin.”

It’s at this point Itachi takes over the questioning.

“Lemeza, we need names- even if they aren’t directly cast against us. Missing-nin are traitors to their village, and cannot be trusted.

“I don’t know their names, I apologize. I’ve only ever seen one of them- a tall, lanky man. Formerly from Kirigakure, I believe. Carried around a rather large blade with a unique shape.
>>
You, Nori and Hinata exchange looks. Missing-nin from the Mist could only mean one thing….

Itachi takes off his mask, setting it down on a nearby cot.

He sits down, rubbing his temples.

“We need to know more. Can you at least give me more than “Tall, Lanky, Weird Sword”? Not trying to be difficult Lemeza, but that could be almost any of the Seven Swordsman.”

Lemeza lights another cigarette, and takes a long drag.

“.....Oh! Yeah! He’s like, blue!”

“Blue.” Itachi says in a rather deadpan voice.

“Yeah, he’s blue. His skin is this weird coloration. That and I suppose his outfit was a bit off- considering we’re in a desert. Black robe, with little red clouds on it.”

You feel your blood run cold.
Immediately, you turn and look at Itachi, who’s looking straight back at you.

Akatsuki. S-Class missing-nin. You think back to what Danzo told you about their ranks…. And only one was from Kirigakure.

Kisame Hoshigaki.

“Ok, everyone. We need to hold a team meeting. Now.” Itachi says, standing immediately.

The three of you come stand close to Itachi- Lemeza, feeling a bit left out, leaves his tent to smoke outside.

“It would seem one of our “Bodyguards” is one of the Akatsuki- a group of S-Class Missing-nin criminals. The Land of Wind must be serious about whatever’s inside to afford their price. However- if at any point we are arrayed against them, I want you to understand something.”

“You three are to flee. Leave. Head back to the village.”

“Alright, Itachi-sensei. But you need to get out once we’re clear, too.” you say gravely.

“Of course. I have intention of dying in some dusty old ruins. Besides…” he says, looking to the three of you- “I have no intention of leaving you without a sensei for a second time. This is only if we end up in a fight with him- which may not even happen. There are other Shinobi present as well, so we’ll need to be on ours toes. I’m sure whatever is in these ruins, that is the primary target. They’ll most likely only engage if we become an obstacle to obtaining it.”

You breathe out a sigh of relief when the other two agree- you don’t know much about Kisame specifically, but these Akatsuki people are terrifying. Speaking of which…

“Itachi-sensei. The Akatsuki work in pairs, correct?” you question.

He looks at you oddly, but answers the question.

“Yes, they do. They aren’t ravaging madman- they’re essentially mercenaries. Every time they’ve ever been encountered, there as been at least two of them present, and that would fit with what Lemeza said before. However… as of right now, we don’t know who Kisame’s partner is. Our knowledge on the Akatsuki membership is sorely lacking…” he finishes. He seems to be taking this fact as a personal failing.

There is a bit of a somber silence, before Nori breaks it.

“Well, we don’t have to fight him, or it’s not guaranteed, you know? Let’s not get in over our heads worrying about this now.” she says, trying to ease the atmosphere.

“Well, Sensei, what should we do?” you say. You, of course, have your own ideas….

1. You advocate trying to avoid the Akatsuki members entirely.
2. You advocate trying to find out more information- like who Kisame’s partner is.
3. You advocate switching gears to find out about the shinobi from Iwagakure.
4. You advocate something else entirely- (What?)

“….Well, Sensei, what should we do? If we’re to avoid the Akatsuki members, we should probably try to find out something about the Iwa shinobi, correct?” you ask.

“Yes, that would be best. Unfortunately sneaking around in an unfriendly camp could be an issue. Especially if they are expecting us, which they most likely are. I would suggest we wait until morning. The chance exists that we’ll see them in the morning, anyway. For now, I suggest we get some sleep.

Your sensei gets up and summons Lemeza back into the tent. To your relief, he hasn’t returned empty handed, bringing forth two somewhat dusty-looking screens, together with two serving men. They go about their work, setting up a sequestered off area for you and the other girls to sleep.

Once they leave, you go about customizing your sleeping arrangements, which takes little time. Nori snores, so she’s farther away, nearly on the opposite side of the tent. Hinata and You are closer together, as a result.

You sit, and the exhaustion from travel, partnered with the poor sleep on the road hits you all at once. Frankly, you’re beat. Rising from your cot, you can see Itachi is outside with Lemeza, who’s still smoking. Or is that a different one? The man has a serious problem….

As you approach, you’re swiftly attacked by the deadly head-poke attack!

You just sort of grumble, in response.

“Go to bed, Tsuki. You three need the rest much more than I do. I doubt anything will happen, regardless.”

You..

So how bizarre would it be to go over to the Iwa ninja and just... you know. Succinctly announce our presence in a professional manner, so that there's no surprise down the road? Nobody but maybe Kisame's here to get stabby anyway, so why not preemptively deescalate?

Not the person you're replying to, but I'm a quantitative economist. You're right up to a point, but considering patents and trade regulations don't exist in a naruto setting...the "dependency" you're talking about wouldn't happen as they turn around, reverse engineer your product, and sell their own design back for even cheaper. Think China. Not to mention large scale/long range enterprise is iffy without a reliable foreign exchange market and communication channels.

Also product dependency and economic domination don't really occur for luxury goods, usually only commodities or key economic industries like transportation or agriculture. Financial markets are a different but related beast.

You'd make a fair bit o' dough in the meantime though. Economically dominating the Village hidden in the stone through agricultural products, fabulous textiles, and Norihime flight machines would be awesome though.
>>
>>48267981
yeah but what would be china?
the setting pretty low tech because magic is better at fighting and fighting is so dangerous it overshadows the rest.
mundane land still needs to implement manufactories and shinobi lands probably only care about having a bigger magic dick to flail around
>>
>>48267981
That's why we start small. Like better clothes, toys, and whatnot. Then move up to the big things like food and tech.
And use the ol' practice of our products "failing" after a while.
Though you're the econ man, so your word is better and you make a good point.

You continue to grumble and whine. It… really isn’t coherent, or flattering.

“....you could at least trade off with one of us, sensei.” you finish.

“I could. Tell you what, tomorrow night, you three can trade off, ok? Is that a fine compromise?” he says- though he isn’t looking at you, you can tell he’s smiling.

“Fine. I better not catch you complaining! I offered to let you sleep.” you chide.

Itachi laughs, and to your surprise, Lemeza does too. You spin on your heel and head back to your cot.

Idiots.

You lie down on the cot- and are promptly greeted by Nori’s snoring. How does she sleep like that, even in a place and situation like this? That girl is something else.

Staring at the ceiling of the tent, you let your mind wander. This life- the life of the shinobi- it was what you always wanted. It was what mother did; and in a way, this is how you choose to honor her. But… this constant living on a knife’s edge… it has to take it’s toll on people. You desperately want people like your sensei and Hinata and Nori and Danzo to be happy. These shinobi- they’re giving their lives for everyone. How can these people be happy, knowing that they walk to nearly certain death? Nori hates chasing cats, but at least cats won’t kill you in your sleep.

It’s coward’s talk, and you know it. You won’t entertain it much longer, but…. It would be nice if, in another world, none of this was necessary. Maybe then mother would still be with you and father.

That thought carries you deep into sleep, a skiff carrying you down a lazy stream of consciousness.

You don’t dream anything coherent; just small, segmented scenes. Father and Danzo, posing for a photograph. Maru serving you breakfast in the morning. You, Hinata and Nori, relaxing in the spring. Itachi in some sort of formal outfit- you really don’t have a name for it. You dream of the sky- the vast, unconquerable sky. The wind flowing past as your soar amongst the clouds…..

To your surprise, you wake up before either Nori or Hinata. Thankfully, either because she rolled over or suffocated herself, Nori’s dreadful snoring has ceased for now. You take the moment to change, staying sufficiently behind the screen. Afterwards, you head outside. Itachi is standing guard, alert as ever. He quirks an eyebrow at you, but you just explain you just wish to walk around for a bit. He makes you promise not to go near the enemy camps, and you do.

You feel like watching the sunrise over the desert, so you climb over the far dune. As you do so, you notice a lone figure in the distance, sitting like you planned on doing, to watch the sun rise over the sand.

Do you…

You start your approach, slowly at first. It doesn’t look like anyone close to Kisame’s description, so aren’t really worried. No black cloak, either.

It’s a young girl, maybe just a few years older than you. She seems intently focused on the sunrise, but as you slowly approach, she notices you.

After a moment, she smiles, and beckons you over.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” she says, looking out towards the horizon.

“It most certainly is. I wonder if the people here ever get used to it?” you muse.

“Probably, to some extent. But one can hope that even when it becomes commonplace, appreciation for such a beautiful thing does not wane.” she says, her voice barely above a whisper.

She turns to you, and you back at her.

Dark hair and eyes, faint smile lines around her mouth.

“You’re a bit young to be in such a place by your own will. Genin, right?” she observes.

You are a bit alarmed, but answer regardless.

“Yes, I am. That must mean you’re the shinobi from Iwagakure?” you question.

“Kurotsuchi is my name. Although I’m not too much older than yourself, they decided to make me a jonin of my village. Our villages may not be on good terms, but I’ll tell you now- I’m not your enemy. I’m simply here to protect my employer. I’m not in the business of hurting young girls, at any rate.” she says, standing up.

“I will warn you, though. Those two men with the people from the Wind? They’re dangerous. Avoid them as much as you can, if you want to make it out of this alive.” she warns.

You….

1. Tell her your name.
2. Ask her about something. (What?)
3. Let her leave

(Also, the next response will be a bit delayed, I need to re-energize myself before the next bit. Do try not to murder one another whilst I’m gone?)

“Nice to meet you, Kurotsuchi. I’m Tsuki.” you say politely.

“You mentioned those two men- our employer told us about of them- the blue one. Said his name was Kisame.” you say, altering the story a bit, as not to give off too much. “Have you seen the other one? His partner?”

“Only in passing.” she says, shaking her head. “He wears a broad hat that covers his face- so I can’t tell you much. But… the big one, Kisame. He seems to… listen to the smaller one. It’s hard to describe- he seems to carry on his every word.”

“He’s probably more dangerous than Kisame.” she finishes.

“Thank you, Kurotsuchi.” you say earnestly.

“No worries, kid. Like said, stay away from those two, and let me do my job, and we’ll all get out this in one piece, alright?” she reassures you.

With the sun rising higher in the sky, you both head opposite directions, back to your respective camps.

With the sun climbing higher into the sky, you head over to the ruins entrance. It’s there that you see your “competition”.

A small, round man, flanked by two nervous looking assistants. Kurotsuchi is standing beside the portly archeologist.

A taller, dark skinned man with a well groomed beard. He is flanked by two figures. One is immediately recognizable as Kisame- he’s blue, and has strange, fish-like features. He looks decidedly uncomfortable in the desert heat. The other figure, dwarfed by Kisame, is wearing his Akatsuki robe, with a wide-brimmed hat. You cannot see his face.

You imagine yourselves, standing by Lemeza, wearing your cloaks and the All-Terrain Shinobi Facemasks. Do you look particularly intimidating, compared to the Akatsuki members? You hope so.

Lemeza lights a cigarette. It doesn’t do much to break the mood.

The small man starts to speak- his voice is stuffy and slightly irritating.

“So, we’ve all gathered with our assistants, I see.” he squeaks.

“Indeed.” The dark man says.

“Certainly looks that way, doesn’t it?” Lemeza responds, exhaling smoke.

The dark man looks over towards your party-

“Dr. Kosugi.” he says in a deep, smooth voice.

“Dr. Afzal.” Lemeza says, imitating his tone.

“You know I find you deeply irritating, correct?” Afzal says, condescension dripping from his voice.

“I count on it. Every day of my life.” Lemeza retorts.
“You think your motley band can stand up to my men here? I assure you, they cannot.” Afzal says smugly.

“Dr. Afzal! I refuse to believe you are bringing your personal grudges into this matter!” the portly archeologist squeaks up again.

“Ah, forgive me, Dr. Tamaishi. I assure you, it won’t happen again.” Afzal responds.

“Hmph! Well, I hope not! The International Archaeological community, and the Land of Stone at large will not stand for it, you know! Hmphhmph!” Tamaishi chortles.

“Very well, Dr. Tamaishi. You have my leave to head into the site first. Unless, of course, Dr. Kosugi objects?” Afzal says, smugly grinning.

“No, of course not. Be my guest, Dr. Tamaishi.” Lemeza grumbles through his cigarette.

“Hmph! Well I’m certainly glad you can see sense, Lemeza! Your father would be happy to see you cooperating for the greater good of the archeological community, oh yes…” Tamaishi rambles.

“Very well my boys, I am off! Please do not follow too quickly now! Hohoho!”

Tamaishi and his researchers, along with Kurotsuchi, descend a set of dusty stone steps, into a rather cavernous entryway. Before long, all you can hear are the echos of their footsteps.

You kind of wish he hadn’t gone first- whomever he was, he seemed to be the voice of reason.

The remaining two researchers continue to glower at one another, without exchanging barbs. Eventually, the mystery member of Akatsuki steps forward, whispering something into Afzal’s ear.

“My compatriot says that it would not be wise to let you come in behind us, and I happen to agree. Please, be my guest.” He says, smiling.

Lemeza spits.

“By that same logic, we’d be stupid to let you come in behind us, Afzal. Especially since you’re employing those kind of men!”

You see Kisame shift- you try not to let off any obvious sign of intimidation. Thankfully the masks cover your face…

The two men continue to trade petty barbs- seems this is going nowhere fast.

You believe you should…

1. Go ahead into the ruins. You can put some distance between you and the Akatsuki members, or maybe catch up to Kurotsuchi.

2. Insist they go on before you.

We need to invent motion trackers. Add them to our Masks.

I want Tsuki's taijutsu moves to be influence by Karin from Street Fighter

Also as a SFV player, Karin is overcomplicated for essentially being a pressure rushdown character.

Tsuki's her own person, No need to be influenced by anything.

Sure instant 1 frame Tenko is tough to get used to, but otherwise she is pretty straightforward.

Ibuki though...

Cammy does her whole schtick easier and arguably better.

Also, being a Laura player is suffering.

Thing about Karin is that she can combo almost anything into her CA. And that thing does absurd amounts of damage.

Imitating the mystery man, you walk up behind Lemeza, and whisper to him that it’s perfectly fine that we go before them. Agitating a fight here probably isn’t the best idea, either.

“Very well, Afzal. We’ll go on ahead. I hope your pair of S-Class wet nurses keep you nice and safe up here.” Lemeza says, flicking his spent cigarette towards the man.

Kisame starts laughing. It’s the first thing you’ve really seem him do, other than just stand by and look intimidating.

It’s rather off-putting.

Your group of five steps forward, and begins descending into the ruins. You keep an eye on the Akatsuki and Afzal, but they don’t seem to have moved.

You to continue to walk down the passage, until you come to a large stone door- which has been pried open.

While you’d like to stop and inspect it, you hear a chilling sound from back towards the entrance.

Water.

And a voice-

“Hope you can swim, Konoha brats! Hahahahaha!” The guffawing laughter matches Kisame- although you really don’t have much time to think about it.

The roaring of the water echoes down the chamber- you need to move, now!

The five of you immediately take off running in the opposite direction, but where are you supposed to go?

You continue to run, and eventually reach a large central hall. The path seems to split three ways here…

1. Go to the left
2. Go to the right
3. Go up.
4. Ask Lemeza

“Lemeza! Where do we go!?” you yell.

“Ah, shit… Left! Go left! Going up here only goes to a dead end!” he says, pointing down the left path.

Your team collectively makes haste down the left path, which after a bit begins to travel downward. You internally question this decision, but he knows the layout of this place, hopefully.

The water is behind you, although it isn’t quite as loud. You continue to run, doing your best not to collide in the cramped space. Eventually the pathway takes a sharp right, before emptying out into a large chamber. The chamber itself decorated with lifelike images of large trees springing forth, growing tall to the ceiling, supporting it with it’s powerful branches. It would probably be beautiful, if you weren’t pressed for time….

1. Collapse the tunnel behind you with some explosive tags.
2. Search the chamber without doing so.

You opt not to seal the passageway behind you- you have no idea if there is even a way out of this room!

You start panning around the room, trying to find anything- a lever switch, anything to shut the door behind you- but you don’t see anything.

Lemeza, however, is just staring at the ceiling on the far end of the room. It’s then that you see it- there’s a door up there! But how exact are you supposed to get up there?

Nori’s voice pulls you back to reality. “Guys! Look! We can climb these murals! They’re etched just deep enough into the walls that there are hand and footholds!”

Everyone begins to climb- even Lemeza, who’s surprisingly deft at climbing up these walls. As you do so, water begins to pour into the room. You’d think you’d be safe up here, but you have no idea just how water he intends to pour into that part of the ruins. Instead, you keep climbing toward that far wall. Thankfully, you have enough physical strength and dexterity to do this with little effort.

After about 10 minutes, everyone is standing on the small platform near the ceiling. It’s a little tight- Lemeza and Itachi have to hunch over not to hit their heads- but everyone fits. Looking down, it looks like the water is slowing down; he was doing a Water Style technique, most likely, since there was not natural sources of water around. But even then, to create so much on his own….

While you ponder this, Hinata and Nori push on the door nearby. It grinds loudly as its pushed, as if it hasn’t been used in millennia.

On the other side- darkness.
