So it begins

It's very late when you arrive back in the village. You doubt many people are still awake at this hour, so you decide to leave the reunions for tomorrow. You head back to the restaurant, and find it just the same as when you left it. This is the longest you'd ever been away, and it feels good to finally be back home.

It's closed for business by now, and the door is locked. But it shouldn't be so late that your uncle has been asleep for long if at all, so you go ahead and knock on the door. After waiting a few moments, the door cracks open a bit, and you see your uncle looking out at you.

"Kon?" he gasps, throwing the door open. "You're back! Oh, it's so good to see you again. Looking like even more of a man, at that. How was your vacation, huh? Have yourself a good time?"

Your uncle ushers you inside from the cold, and sits you down as he makes a quick snack.

"I had a great time, Uncle." you assure. "Sorry for showing up so late, though."

"Nonsense, it's no trouble! This is your home, and you can come and go at any time you please!" your uncle assures, laying out a dish for you. "Now, you must be hungry! Eat up!"

You chat with your uncle as you eat, telling him all about your time training, as he tells you about how great both life and his business have been doing.

"That may have been a vacation, but it sounds like you were working hard to improve relations between the villages." your uncle notes, as you finish eating. "You never do seem to rest, do you, Kon? Well, I'm sure you'll want to spend tomorrow catching up with your friends. You may just be surprised by something."

You head up to sleep in your own bed for the first night in a long while, and sleep as soundly as you ever have. Morning comes before you know it, and after breakfast with your uncle, you're ready to head out.

You decide to report to the Hokage first and foremost. Don't want to leave him out of the loop again. And you're sure he'll be interested in your trip's potential effect on inter-village cooperation.

You make your way stealthily over rooftops to the Hokage's office, preferring not to get sidetracked this early. You arrive, but find that the Hokage doesn't seem to be there. Izumo and Kotetsu let you through, but inside the office are Shikamaru and his father, wearing what seems to be a new flak vest.

"Lord Itachi and Neji went to a meeting of the five Kage." Shikamaru explains, as he reluctantly files papers with his father. "They should be back by tomorrow, though. Until then, why don't you go check in with the others? I'm sure they'll be glad to see you again. Let me just say that some of them have changed a bit since you last saw them."

"Unlike Shikamaru, here." Shikaku adds. "He's just the same as ever. At least he's been helping as a representative in the fledgling United Shinobi Council. I imagine you might want to get in on that too, Kon. It's in large part thanks to you that efforts are going so well, after all."

You chat a bit longer, then head out once more.

You decide to hit up Sasuke first. Once again going for a stealthy approach, you float over to the Uchiha compound with your jutsu, hoping to catch Sasuke off guard.

Unfortunately, Sasuke isn't even there when you arrive. Mikoto greets you, remarking on how long it's been, and how much you've grown.

After the formalities, she tells you that Sasuke was invited to be a guest teacher at the academy today. You thank her, then head out to meet her son. You sneak over there as well, but you figure that you'll probably drop the stealth after this. It's no use trying to sneak up on him anyway, as you find him demonstrating Taijutsu in front of a bunch of kids, with many more watching from the building windows.

As Sasuke finishes his demonstration, you notice that he's grown his bangs to completely cover his Rinnegan now.

"Sasuke!" you hear squeals from several young girls up above. Some are nearly falling over the side with how far they're trying to learn out to wave.

Sasuke seems as uncomfortable with the attention as ever.

Maybe drawing some attention to yourself will make things easier on Sasuke. You jump high up in the air, then drop down right next to him, intent on making a bit of an entrance.

As you land, you can hear some gasps, then even a little whispering and giggling. It seems you aren't completely without recognition.

"Kon, it's been a while." Sasuke smirks, as he turns to you. "Nice hat."

At your name's mention, you can hear some of the incessant cheering targeted at you. The group of kids that Sasuke was teaching get excited too, and demand that you join in the demonstration, to which you comply.

You and Sasuke go back and forth, demonstrating all sorts of Taijutsu moves. Plenty of them are way too hard for these kids to even attempt, but the two of you can't help but put on a bit of a show.

After school, the kids all wave at the two of you as they disperse, the girls swooning all the while.

"They've left Kiba alone for the most part, since he's married, so I've been taking the full assault myself." Sasuke sighs. "I've gotten so tired of it that I've been having Konohamaru distract them while I say that I have to go do something else. And hey, just to let you know, he's the one who offered, or I'd never do that."

Not more than a minute after his name comes up, you see Konohamaru approach. He looks quite a bit more mature since you last saw him.

"Bro, you're back!" he shouts. "I heard all about your training from the monkeys, it sounds so cool! You sure missed out on the girls, though. Do you have any idea how popular you guys are? Just hanging around with Sasuke has been great!"

The three of you start walking around as you chat.

You fist bump Konohamaru, and ask all about how things have been in the village. It seems things have been mostly calm, and Sasuke and Konohamaru have each been doing their own standard missions. Nothing out of the ordinary. It truly seems to be the beginning of an era of peace.

"How's Kiba been doing?" you ask. "Is he enjoying his married life?"

"He wasted absolutely no time. He and Tamaki have already had a son since you've been gone." Sasuke tells you. he pauses for a bit, looking like he's going to say something, but visibly shudders. He puts his hand to his face before speaking again. "Sorry. Master Jiraiya must have corrupted me more than I thought. I was about to make a tasteless joke about animals."

"Man Sasuke, it's not that bad. You really need to lighten up." Konohamaru insists. "By the way, Haku and Ino got married, and had a kid too. Looks like all your friends are nearly grown up now, huh? You better get over yourself Sasuke, or you'll be left behind!"

As you walk, you see all sorts of banners and stalls set up. It seems it's the time of the year for the Rinne Festival. You usually don't pay it much mind, but it occurs to you due to the name that the celebration may be able to be traced back to the Sage of Six Paths. Funny, that.

As the afternoon goes on, several girls approach Sasuke to give him gifts, much to his chagrin. By the looks on a few girl's faces when they see you, you imagine you'd be getting some gifts if they knew you were here earlier. Eventually, the gifts pile so high, that you and Konohamaru are helping to carry them.

Sasuke only serves to look more and more uncomfortable, until eventually, the stream of girls stops and you can rest.

Sasuke can't keep this up forever. He needs to do something, as opposed to just letting himself be uncomfortable forever.

"So what do you intend to do about this?" you ask. "You really shouldn't drag this out, and ignoring it will just make it worse. I'm willing to bet you've got your heart set somewhere, so get to it before all you have is regrets."

Sasuke doesn't respond, but Konohamaru speaks up.

"Sasuke's always complaining about the girls approaching him having no connection to him, and that's what makes it weird." he explains. "I can only imagine that if he's saying that, he has someone in mind that does have a connection to him, am I right?"

You've heard Sasuke say that before. You glance at him to see him looking down.

"Yeah, I never got over that, you don't need to remind me, Kon." Sasuke scoffs. "I tried moving on, but I think there might be something else to this. What I really need to do is confront it directly, instead of avoiding it like I have been. After this... I'll know one way or the other."

You feel like Sasuke is being vague on purpose because he's still nervous, but he assures you he has things handled. You take care of Sasuke's gifts, and Konohamaru heads home, since the sun is setting. Sasuke begins to take off as well.

You decide to take another stroll across the village rooftops, partially to keep an eye on Sasuke, and partially to see who else is around.

As you tail Sasuke as stealthily as possible, you catch a glimpse of Tenten's weapon shop. The lights are all off. There doesn't seem to be anyone home.

You see Kiba with Ino and Haku, and the two fathers are holding their infant children. Kiba looks a whole lot manlier, having gotten more muscular, and grown a goatee. Haku has changed as well. You imagine that he's a lot less likely to be mistaken for a girl now. Ino is wearing a new outfit too, and has grown her hair out, but is hanging off of Haku the same as ever. You get just close enough to make out part of their conversation.

"Yeah, Nekobaa isn't feeling well, so Tamaki left Kegawa to me." Kiba says. "But hey, we finally get to meet your son! I'm sure they'll be great friends, right?"

"Reizoko is a girl, Kiba." Haku says, as calm as ever. "You're not doing this on purpose, are you?"

"What? No!" Kiba replies. "I was just playing it save, you know? I'm not making the opposite mistake again. So why no Ino in the name?"

"Well, she wasn't born alongside members of the Nara and Akimichi clans." Ino says. "So she won't be Clan Head. We've already been chastised for being too hasty. But that just means we'll have another, right Haku?"

Haku merely returns his usual smile, and you leave to keep up with Sasuke.

Sasuke just seems to be wandering around, looking around all the shops and stalls. Eventually, he finds who he's looking for. Hinata is at a stall, looking around at trinkets. She's alone, and seems nervous. She even jumps a bit when Sasuke greets her.

You're too far away to make out what they're saying in the crowd, but it goes on for a while. Both of the participants seem rather nervous, so it goes pretty slow. Eventually, Hinata takes off. Sasuke is about to follow, but then stops. He looks right in your direction.

"I have been thinking really hard, Sakura!" you hear Lee yell. "My confessions until now... I know as well as anyone how superficial they have been! I merely said how pretty you were, or how I admired your talent. But my feelings are not that shallow! Because now I understand! The Sakura that I fell in love with is not just strong, or beautiful. It is the Sakura that is passionate! You always restrain yourself, Sakura. You hold your true thoughts and feelings back, to try and come off as someone you are not. As earnest as Lee always is, he's even more serious than ever. You leave so as not to intrude any further.

As you keep strolling around, you think you see some figures moving in the distance, across the night rooftops. In fact, it looks like it may be a fight. Then again, maybe not. You doubt that would be happening so close to the festival stalls.

You rush over, but keep your distance at first. It'd be better to get an idea of the situation.

You watch as some kind of robed men you've never seen before all dash across rooftops. You think you see one of them out ahead of the others carrying someone. You meditate briefly to get your Sage senses, and discover that it is Hinata. You also learn that these guys aren't human at all. You can't sense them. They must be some kind of puppets. You do however, sense Sasuke closing in.

He's chasing after the lead puppet, knocking any other puppets out of his way. The puppets start launching some sort of chakra blasts, forcing Sasuke to take evasive maneuvers. The blasts are fairly powerful, it seems, nothing to scoff at. On one roof, several puppets all corner Sasuke at once, forcing him to summon Susanoo to defend from the barrage of chakra blasts.

You can't let these guys hold up Sasuke. You quickly rush to his side, summoning Sarujizo and placing him on your face to regulate your Sage Mode. You shoot your teammate a thumbs up once again.

"Go on, Sasuke." you insist. "I'll take care of these guys."

"Thanks, Kon." Sasuke replies, lowering his Susanoo before running after Hinata. "I owe you one!"

As Sasuke takes off, some of the puppets make to stop him. They can fly, but you erect barriers in midair to stop their pursuit. Before they can react, you follow up by crushing the furthest ones with Nebula Spheres at once. The others turn their attention entirely to you, and start firing their chakra blasts.

You're plenty fast enough to dodge, but it leaves you little room to counterattack. A problem you get around by attacking fast enough. You fire off Heavenly Lances one-handed from both hands, sniping down the puppets one by one as you duck and weave through the blasts. Eventually, all the puppets are defeated. They aren't too powerful on their own, but they seem to be quite dangerous in large groups. Enough of them could have overwhelmed you.

You head in the direction of Sasuke and Hinata, and find them on the roof of another building. Both of them are looking anxiously at the figure of a man floating in the sky.

"The final day is fast approaching." the man says, his eyes closed. "Before then, I will come back for you, Hinata."

Before any more can be said, the man fades away. As he does so, a light can be seen from the moon's direction. It gets brighter and brighter, until it flies right over your heads at great speed. It's a meteorite, and you watch as it lands in the forest behind the Hokage Mountain, causing a huge explosion. The three of you are left standing in silence for a bit.

After a few moments to regain yourself, you speak up.

"Who was that?" you ask. "And what did he want with Hinata?"

"He said his name was Toneri." Hinata speaks up. "And that he had come for me. He didn't say anything else."

You don't have much information. But you need to let someone know about this.

"Sasuke, stay with Hinata." you suggest. "I'll go report to Kakashi Sensei. Then we can let the Hokage know as soon as possible."

Sasuke nods, and you fly off. Sensing around, you find Kakashi Sensei with Guy.

"How is it, Guy?" Kakashi asks. "Can you walk around?"

"I think so..." Guy treads lightly on his leg, walking slowly. "I may just be free of that wheelchair yet. Looks like Naruto really did figure it out. Gonna take a while to train it back up I'm afraid, but I'm still young!"

The two men turn to you.

"Kon, you're back?" your teacher asks. "And you look serious. Is something going on?"

You inform Kakashi of the situation, and as much as you know so far.

"I see. And there's no sign of where they went? That's a problem." Kakashi sighs. "I'll take care of letting the others know, Kon. I think you should get a few hours of sleep while you can. No doubt you'll be chosen to track this guy down once the Hokage returns. I want you at your peak condition."

"Yes, Sensei." you reply. Your teacher isn't wrong. You go home and sleep while you have the chance.

In the morning, you arrive at the Hokage's office. Neji, Sasuke, and Hinata stand to your sides.

"Hanabi Hyuuga has been kidnapped, seen taken off by one of the puppets of this 'Toneri'." Itachi explains. This is news to you, but everyone else seems to be aware. "Therefore, I have chosen Kon, Neji, and Sasuke as the team to rescue her. I have also granted Hinata's request to join you. Kon, you will lead this mission. Hold out your hand."

You do so, and with a motion, an assistant performs a hand seal. A clock around a picture of the Earth appears on your hand.

You consider your team, and voice your suggestion.

"I want to bring Kiba with us." you tell the Hokage. "If they're targeting Hyuuga Clan members, then they may have countermeasures to the Byakugan. Kiba can provide a secondary means of tracking, and he can fight on par with Sasuke and I."

"I understand." Itachi replies. "I believe that can be arranged. I believe we have enough manpower to deal with the meteorites without him, if we all work together. And I can have Shizune help babysit. Consider it done. Good luck, all of you."

Your team leaves the office, and waits for Kiba to arrive. In a few minutes, he shows up with Akamaru.

"Just had to drag me away from my family time, huh?" Kiba smirks. "This better be one damn good adventure, you guys."

Your team assembled, Sasuke summons some hawks, and you all fly in the direction that Hanabi was last seen. Hinata and Neji look diligently with their Byakugan for clues.

You and Neji currently share a hawk.

Shizaru is the fourth elder monkey capable of using all three sensor deprivation jutsus, but he could possibly have something to rival our own nature chakra sensor. He is our nature chakra teacher after all. He could see things we miss.

You meditate to enter Sage Mode, and sense around. There doesn't seem to be any sign of the enemy, though. It's even strange how little there is to sense. You can't imagine that this Toneri could be hiding out here. Something is strange.

As you search, you make small talk with Neji.

"It's been a while, Neji." you say. "Aside form this kidnapping, how have things been? Shikamaru said everyone was pretty different."

"That's an exaggeration on his part, I'm afraid." Neji replies, still looking around diligently. "I'm sure he just means that everyone is maturing, and getting on with their lives, while he feels like he's standing still. He's been worrying about that lately. As for how things have been... they had been going well. Hanabi and I had come to understand each other somewhat, I think. Whether we would come to develop feeling of love, I still don't know... but I will surely not stand for this. Toneri will face the consequences for taking her. After all I did to let Hanabi choose her own path, I will not allow it to be infringed, certainly not by that man. I swear it."

After searching a bit longer, Hinata finds a kunai of Hanabi's. With it, Kiba and Akamaru can easily follow the trail left by the scent. You all find your way to an underground spring.

"This is as far as it goes." Kiba says. "It ends at this spring."

"We can't see through it, either." Neji adds. "Something about this spring distorts the Byakugan's vision."

"It doesn't seem to be water at all." Sasuke goes on, scooping a handful out of the spring. "It doesn't even leave things wet, just runs right off."

There is only one way forward. Your group all enters the spring and swims down, into a passageway.

As you swim down, you pass some giant yellow bubbles. Your team bursts through the surface of the water, but you all keep falling upward somehow. You begin to lose track of your thoughts.

Your memories all begin to unfold in front of you. You see your academy days, and the formation of Team 7. Before much else can happen, you see Sasuke appear in front of you. "Wake up, Kon."

You find yourself floating among yellow bubbles like before. Sasuke is beside you, while Kiba, Akamaru, Neji, and Hinata appear asleep.

"They're still caught in the genjutsu." Sasuke says, floating over to Neji. "I'll just get everyone out real quick."

Sasuke does just that, quite easily. The benefit of his sharingan, you suppose.

"This seemed to be a trap to get us lost in our memories." Neji says, as you all continue on. "Luckily, Sasuke here was able to render such a measure completely useless."

You all come to another spring, and swim through this one as well. When you come up, you find a giant pile of bubbles on the other side.

"Woah, this must be where those genjutsu bubbles are made." Kiba says. "You think something makes them?"

"Hinata and Sasuke haven't surfaced yet." Neji remarks, looking back at the pool. "We should go back for them."

Just as Neji says so, a giant crab emerges from further in the cave. It launches a stream of bubbles in your direction, and you have to dodge.

"Guess that answers my question!" Kiba laughs. "So how are we taking this one?"

This thing looks like it could take some punishment. Could be fun to wail on it.

"Neji, go back for them." you direct. "Kiba and I can handle this."

Neji nods, then dives back in the spring, leaving you and your teammate head to head with the creature.

"We're strong enough to pulverize this thing." you insist. "Just don't get hit by the genjutsu bubbles."

"Let's see who can crack its shell first!" Kiba shouts. "Alright Akamaru, Fang Over Fang!"

Kiba and his companion begin spiraling toward your foe, while you also close in, dodging the streams of bubbles being fired at you. Fang Over Fang hits, but only some tiny cracks form. This thing's shell is pretty hard. It will take a few more hits.

The crab swings its giant claw down at you, and you retaliate with all the force you can muster. The two opposing forces result in your hit going straight through the crab's claw, making a giant hole.

"Looks like I win, then?" you say jokingly. "I broke through first."

"Yeah, whatever." Kiba grumbles. "Let's just get this over with."

Kiba and Akamaru attack again, spinning through the whole you made in the crab's claw, and into its body, causing massive damage, before breaking out the other side of where they attacked before.

The crab is barely standing now, and you wind up another huge punch, sending it flying into the ceiling, where it crumbles from the impact.

"Just what you'd expect from a master chef." Kiba jokes.

Soon enough, the others join you, and you go on.

We don't have time. We've only got twelve hours before the moon hits us, something more like ten before the Raikage tries to blow it up and in the process showers the Earth with deadly debris. Oh yeah, A built a death ray capable of blowing up the moon, just in case someone started shit with it again. I'm not quite sure how we went from "guns don't exist" to "trans-orbital moon-busting laser" in this short a time, but we did. Hidden Cloud has a great R&D program, I guess.

Hinata is the one at the heart of this. If you want to know what happened, you should probably ask her.

"You alright, Hinata?" you ask. "What happened back there to hold you guys up?"

"Toneri sent a puppet to meet me." Hinata explains. "He told me that he had Hanabi in his castle, and that he had taken her Byakugan."

"Damn him!" Neji curses. "We'll have to pluck them right back out of his head."

You don't often see Neji get worked up.

"He also confirmed the Hokage's suspicion." Hinata goes on. "He is behind the moon falling. He intends to end life on Earth."

This is quite serious. If Hinata heard anything else from Toneri, she isn't giving it. But you don't have time to worry about that. You lead the team out of the cave, only to find yourself on a cliff overlooking an ocean. The sky is bright, as if it was midday, and in the distance, you swear you can see the ocean curve upwards.

"What is this?" Neji asks. "We should be underground. An artificial sun?"

"I can't pick up any scents from here." Kiba says. "And I'm assuming you guys can't see far enough with your Byakugan?"

Both Hinata and Neji check, then shake their heads. You, Kiba, and Sasuke all enter Sage Mode and sense around, but to no avail either.

"Looks like we've got a lot of ground to cover, team." you say, checking the time on the countdown. "We can't waste any time."

Sasuke summons his hawks once again, and you all fly off.
